Your Child's Health: The Parents' Guide to Symptoms, Emergencies, Common Illnesses, Behavior, and Sc

Your Child's Health: The Parents' Guide to Symptoms, Emergencies, Common Illnesses, Behavior, and School ProblemsWhen I had my first baby in 1997, I bought A LOT of child care/medical reference books. My purchases included work by Dr. Spock, Dr. Sears, Penelope Leach, and Dr. Brazelton. "Your Child's Health" is the only one that I still have.

First, this book is organized in a VERY useful way. For each type of issue/illness, there is a quick summary that leads you quickly to an understanding of what you probably should do for your child right now, tomorrow or at your next doctor's appointment.

This book also helps to calm nervous parents. The section about fevers is a great example of this. Barton acknowledges that fevers are scary for parents. He then provides calming words, clear facts and direction about when you really need to worry.

This book does break down when it comes to issues that I consider cultural or social in nature. I do not think that this author is an expert about family beds, breast feeding or feeding schedules. I think that he is simply expressing views that were in vogue when he was in med school. I would strongly reccomend Dr. Sears or the La Leche League for more thorough and thoughtful information on these subjects.

Despite this small weakness, I think that this is a book that every family with babies and small children MUST have.

I use to work on the Pediatric floor of a local hospital for over 15 years, I wish I had known about THIS book then! A few years ago I started working at an "advice" nurse line. This book was used to create some of the Pediatric guidelines. The nurses call this book the "Pediatric Bible"!

The first time I used the book was for a call about a child with a ring stuck on her finger. I told the mom what to do and it worked! From that time on, I have told parents to get this book. If you don't have access to an advice nurse line, I highly recomend you get this book. The information is easy for any parent to understand. It's straightforward information to ease any parents mind.

One of my co-workers even gives this book as part of a wonderful basket of goodies for baby showers! What a great idea!!!

As this book is nearly a decade old, it desperately needs updating. It makes little or no reference to attachment parenting, "child-wearing", or co-sleeping. Prescription information is woefully outdated. Current research on breast-feeding is obviously non-existent and the ear thermometer (a device available for over five years now) was, at the time of this book "not yet available for public use." In today's day and age, you should not have to risk your child's health relying on out-dated information.

I got this book before my now 2 1/2 year old boy was born, I was given several books, and this is by far the best one. I have used this book several times, and it has sure helped in notify doctors of the problem even if it is over the phone. I have had friends come over and call at all hours asking me to check certain things out in this book. I would definately recommened this to all mothers and fathers

KiDS FiRST Diabetes Second: tips for parenting a child with type 1 diabetes

KiDS FiRST Diabetes Second: tips for parenting a child with type 1 diabetesKids First Diabetes Second is a fantastic book filled with great tips, suggestions and advice for newly diagnosed families of children with T1D (Type 1 Diabetes). I wish this book was available when my son was diagnosed with type 1 back in 2008. The author shares her personal story about her daughter's diagnosis and as a fellow D-Mom, her words, feelings and responses mirrored my own throughout the book. What I loved about this book is that it is real. It is a book written by a Mother's journey/life experience from before diagnosis to present day. The book was also enjoyable to read as it featured stories from other D-Moms, D-Dads and friends of the author with Type 1 Diabetes. The one thing that is perfectly clear is that despite the anxiety, feeling of helplessness and being overwhelmed initially, managing this chronic condition does become easier. It truly does. This is my 4th year helping my son manage his T1D and checking blood sugars multiples times a day and taking insulin is as automatic as brushing your teeth. The author also provides a fantastic showcase of resources that any parent or caregiver will value. Resources include information about books, websites for advocating, support groups, school resources (504 plans), travel information especially for airline travel, snack tips, carb counts and an extremely valuable carb factors of common foods and much more. This book is a valuable resource for newly diagnosed families but also for families that have been successfully managing their child's care for awhile. Kudos to the author for writing a much needed book for families of children with T1D!!

As the mom of a five year old who is 6 months into a Type 1 diagnosis, I found this book to be fantastic. The book is the perfect marriage of good, solid information (both technical and practical) with the writing style and perspective of a mom. (Clinical and technical books have been great for my education of Type 1 diabetes health condition itself, but this book fills a huge gap). It was exactly what I was looking for, and it'll make a great reference and resource as we start school in the fall, begin sports, etc.

I enjoyed Leighann's book so much! It was such an easy read. It was also very informative and I actually learned quite a bit and I've been on this Type 1 diabetes journey with my daughter for a year and a half now. My heart sank as I read her daughter's diagnosis story at the beginning of the book. I was taken back to the day my daughter was diagnosed and it just hit so close to home to me. You just NEVER forget that day or those emotions.

One of the things I loved about the book was that Leighann just laid it all out there so simply. It's easy to understand and you could implement things right now to help your loved one dealing with diabetes. It's full of helpful ways to manage your loved one's diabetes. There's no reason why your child can't go on and live a long, healthy and happy life doing whatever it is that they'd like to do. I think it's that helpful, positive tone of the book that I appreciated the most. It was encouraging and it was nice to read from another Mom who has "been there-done that" and has found some useful tips for us other parents. Sure, we all have to travel on this journey the best way we see fit for our child, but I love how Leighann SHARES what she knows. I think it's that education and that sharing of information that really comforts those who are going through it all. We know others are with us, have experienced what we are going through and can relate. We truly are NOT alone.

So thank you, Leighann for writing such a wonderful book and sharing what you have learned. It has been invaluable to me. My daughter is WAY more than just a diabetic child. She is an AWESOME child who just so happens to have diabetes. That won't stop her or any other child with type 1. Nope. They are kids first for sure. Super, awesome, wonderful kids.

God bless! Hugs! :)

I ordered this book on my kindle less than a week after my 15mo old son was diagnosed with diabetes. I had just left the hospital with him two days prior and did not know anyone else with a child with T1 and after days in the hospital learning how to take care of him and getting that crash course in diabetes, I desperately needed to hear about someone else's journey with the same disease. I could relate to the beginning of this book so much with the diagnosis, the hospital stay and the worries of being able to care for my son. The book was also filled with many tips that I'm sure I will be using in the future and are things I hadn't even thought about yet. My only regret is that I didn't buy the paperback version, since I am sure I will be scrolling through searching for certain parts many times.

From a distance, the cover looks inviting... but only from a distance. Look closer and it really breaks your heart and brings perspective to what parents and kids who are dealing with diabetes. Leighann Calentine really brought home for me what members of my family are dealing with related to a recent diagnosis. I bought the copy for them but ended up reading the book first, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I plan on giving copies of this book to anyone I know who has children of any age dealing with diabetes.

Diabetes Care for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: A Reassuring Guide

Diabetes Care for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: A Reassuring GuideThis is a very reassuring book. I recommend it as a starting point for parents who have been through hard times in the hospital, when they had their child diagnosed with diabetes. We have been through this experience when our 2-years old child was diagnosed with diabetes, we were struggling, not believing, looking for advice everywhere. This book helped us put ourselves together, and start dealing with it in a mature way. It first teachs you how to deal with diabetes emotionally which is the most important step in the treatment, how to explain it to your diabetic kid, his brothers/sisters, how to make injections easier for you and your kid, and many other useful advices. It is written from the nursing point of view, so you must have another comprehensive home reference.

This book is very basic, when my daughter was diagnosed at 18 months, I found I was looking for more detailed information than this book had, the pink panther book was great for clinical knowledge, but there is still no great book on the market with the day to day advise I think a parent of a toddler with diabetes needs, like which sippy cups have ounce markings on them so you can measure 4 oz juice easiest and the value and ease of weighing fruit versus measuring it in cups. These are the things parents need, this book was bland.

It's All Good Hair: The Guide to Styling and Grooming Black Children's Hair

It's All Good Hair: The Guide to Styling and Grooming Black Children's HairThank you, thank you, thank you. I can empathize with the author, Ms. Collison, I too have been searching for the hairstyle book and the magazine that will lay it out for me. For more than 7 years, and four bi-racial children later (two boys and two girls), I had yet to find such a book. This book is truly the start of something good. It goes into detail, but not too much detail, how to care for a variety of hair textures "from bone straight to wavy, to tightly coiled and everything in between" (pg. 13). It covers parting to combing to cornrows, twists and braiding. It also covers some basic style for boys. I loved her personal stories, her own and contributors as well. I also appreciate how we are reminded to tell our daughters that they are beautiful and smart as we spend time together combing and styling their hair. As a librarian, I will be praising this book to all who walk through our doors and I look forward to the sequel. Way to go!

I checked this book at the library and was so glad I didn't buy it. It had some really cute hairstyles but all the hair styles featured children with way past shoulder length hair. All the tips she gave were basic and stuff I already knew. She completely skipped toddlers. She had a small section on how to take care of babies hair and then jumped to pictures of older children with relaxed long hair. She had a small section for locked hair no section on nature hair and an area on how to relax your childs hair if her hair too nappy to comb. My daugher is only three. I was looking for tips to keep her hair healthy and to help it grow. She had one picture of a little girl with short braided hair and everyone else with hair down their back which is something most toddlers have yet.

The pictures in this book are not very helpful when trying to recreate the styles. I purchased this book in order to gain ideas for hairstyles for my little ones. This book does contain pics of different styles, but it will only show the hairstyle from one angle. It may show a picture from either the front, side or back, but not from all three angles. If you just want to read a few stories about kids experiences with their hair, then purchase this book. If you are looking for pictures of hairstyles, consider yourself warned.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! The hairstyle instructions are easy to follow; the information is comprehensive, covering everything from afros to zig-zag parts; and the personal anecdotes from real-life parents set it apart from most how-to hair books. I like that the author deals with hairstyles for girls AND boys, and I appreciate her taking time to offer tips for dealing with all types of hair textures. Most of all, I like that Collison urges readers to affirm their children's hair, no matter the texture, color or style. It is a must-have for any loving parent or childcare provider who is looking to instill positive self-image and grooming habits in children.

I got this book as soon as it came out and have used it for ideas on different styles. My 3 year old likes to look at the photos and dream of what I might be able to do to her hair (once it gets a bit longer for some of the styles).

I would have liked some of the photos to be in colour because it's sometimes hard to figure out what's been done but most of the time there is a great explanation.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty ProductsI have seen several Natural Beauty Product Recipe Books on the market, but this is by far the best. This book is easy, comprehensive and packed with information for the novice or seasoned bodycare product maker. This book covers several different topics and areas of making natural body products.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products teaches you how to make products from scratch for your hair, face, body, feet and it even covers the subject on how to make mineral make up, lip balms and glosses.

This book has a wealth of information from the types of oils, butters and additives to use. The book also covers the subject of labeling cosmetics for sale, which is vital in the cosmetic making industry. I think this book is a must have. If you're thinking about getting this book, you won't be dissappointed, I guarantee you. Also don't forget to pick up a copy of "The Idiot's Guide for Making Natural Soaps."

This is a great book. It has so much for the beginner up to the advanced user. I do feel that it lacks recipes for colored women in foundations and such however in all other ways this book is a wealth of great information and recipes. I would give it 98 stars out of 100 stars...

This is by far the best book on cosmetic making that I have read. I was looking for a 'natural' way of making my own cosmetics that had shelf life just in case I wanted to start selling the product. I can't wait to order my supplies. I have been making cosmetics of natural skin care for many years and this is the best book I stumbled upon. And now there is a company that has a complete kit that goes with this book. Thanks for a great, easy to follow, complete cosmetic DIY.

I made a couple of the skin care recipes and most of them did not work as written. The cold cream recipe did not work as written, it was solid and had way to much wax in it and not enought oil it was a mess. Other recipies that I made were similar disappointments, and I am not new to making skin care products.

BEWARE: some of the ingredients in some of the recipes are no longer available, so some of the recipes are no good as written. The supplier who used to sell POP Micas doesn't carry them, and they don't have a good subsitute for them (last I looked) so a lot of the recipies you can't use as written for the make-up.

Don't waste your money on this book do research on the internet for better and more relevant recipes.

I won;t repeat all of the glowing and positive comments that have already been written but suffice to say I concur wholeheartedly.

I do wish to make comments about two of the recipes that really changed my skin and face -dramatically.

I suffer from a condition that causes me to have dry, rough skin and living in a dry arid area with the recent heat waves just made matters worse. That was until I decided to try making my own products. After several disasters with recipes from online and a few books I stumbled upon The Idiots Guide and I just can't say enoug good things about it.

The Thick and Luscious Body Butter has transformed my dry skin into soft and supple skin that almost feels dewy it is so moist. There is a slightly oil feel immediately after application but this quickly absorbs into the skin. I use it in the mornings and after my evenin showers and look forward to how soft my skin feels after application.

I was very, very reluctant to try any of the facial recipes as 99% of the time I get rashes, irritation and major clogged pores from darn near every brand of face creams whether they be cheap, expensive or used as part of a spa facial. But I was so pleased with the Body Butter and it was so easy to make I figured I would give it a try.

I decided to try the Extreme Facial Creme as it was recommended for dryest of skins which is what I have as I have been unable to find a proper facial creme for years now. For the first time ever my facial skin is normal and actaully very soft and smooth. Not once did I break out or get a rash like I usually do from over the counter or spa caliber cremes. I realized later that I had used too much of the oils but despite this fact I didn't break out with tons of clogged pores and that is because, I believe, the oils the recipe calls for are some of the finest and best suited for skin care.

Whether you are a fan or natural products or not (I was not particulary inclined towards natural I just wanted something that finally worked!) this book is for you. I had horrible skin and now I don't. I am a horrible cook but the recipes were easy to follow and the ingredients all available here on amazaon. I will never use anything on my face and body skin other than the two recipes I have gotten from this book the work and work well. I look forward to trying other recipes but if I don't these 2 recipes alone are worth the price of the bbook.

As a resource manual for passing the ACSM's HFS Certification Exam it leaves a lot to be desired. For a 3rd edition it is painfully full of typo errors which include wrong answers for the review tests which makes you doubt your knowledge. In addition it only covers about 1/2 of what's on the exam. To be fair the authors do suggest that it not be the only resourse used to prepare for the test. Confessions of a Professional Hospital Patient: A Humorous First Person Account of How to Survive a

Confessions of a Professional Hospital Patient: A Humorous First Person Account of How to Survive a Hospital Stay and Escape with Your Life, Dignity and a Sense of HumorFor most of us, it takes little more than the mention of the phrase, "hospital stay," to set off a chain reaction of fear, anxiety and helplessness. Michael A. Weiss offers a perfect "how-to" survival guide cleverly disguised as a funny and often poignant memoir of a most amazing and inspiring battle against chronic illness and pain. Drawing from personal experience, Mr. Weiss prepares the reader for virtually every situation that a patient will encounter during a hospital stay. "Confessions of a Professional Hospital Patient," should be required reading not only for soon-to-be-patients, but for the medical professionals in whom they are about to place their trust.

I like reading books about health care and hospitals but I've never read a book about being a hospital patient so accurate and funny that I would recommend it to fellow health care professionals until now. Mr. Weiss certainly has had his share of hospital hardships but he is even-handed in describing the experiences and provides such thought-provoking insights that even the most arrogant of physicians has to pay attention! I also appreciated the unique fashion in which he handles the nurse-physician and nurse-patient relationships. I can honestly say that while reading this book I learned a great deal about being a nurse and I learned all this from a patient! That in itself made this a very interesting and entertaining book I only wish I had read it in nursing school!

Buy Confessions of a Professional Hospital Patient: A Humorous First Person Account of How to Survive a Now

One would be hard-pressed to think of a topic less likely to make for an ENTERTAINING read than the chronicling of the strategies that an all-too-frequent hospital patient has found necessary to devise and employ in order to survive a hospital stay...actually unfortunately MANY hospital stays: nevertheless, "Confessions of a Professional Hospital Patient" was just that. Ultimately, of course, it's the quality and quantity and integrity of the information, advice and insight that author Michael Weiss provides that make this book invaluable, perhaps even a life-saver, whether you, a friend, or a loved one is on the giving or receiving end of medical treatment. He approaches a difficult subject with respect, humility, humor, compassion, a great deal of welcome (and critical) common sense, and what must be a helluva lot of painful honesty. It's all in the service of prepping a patient or patient-to-be (sooner or later aren't we all?!) both mentally and physically for every aspect of the often impersonal, anxiety-ridden hospital-going experience as well as its often just as painful aftermath. I came away from reading "Confessions" a much better informed and enlightened "consumer," and that is essential no matter what goods or service one is buying.

Read Best Reviews of Confessions of a Professional Hospital Patient: A Humorous First Person Account of How to Survive a Here

This book should be a must-read for all students in medical school, families of chronically ill people and as a continuing education course for all doctors so that people truly understand the plight of someone who has to frequently endure, hospitals, insurance companies, side effects, complications, etc... The author, Michael Weiss, cleverly makes lemonade from his lemon of a situation and makes the reader wonder if doctors/hospitals looked at health care from the outside-in, they would then think twice about how they treat patients. Somehow the author takes you through his long journey with Chron's Disease in an entertaining fashion. In fact I read it on an airplane during a business trip where I wasn't expecting to be laughing so much and people were looking at me because I was cracking up way too much (for a book involving a disease about one's bowels!!!). Then, if the Chron's Disease isn't bad enough IN A VERY FUNNY MANNER he pokes fun at the system and the unnessary added ordeals chronic and sick patients have to go through --like being woken up by a nurse at 3AM to take a sleeping pill!!! There is also an extremely helpful Table of Contents/Checklist which makes the book a great reference tool and thus a great gift for a hospital patient. I highly recomment "Confessions of a Hospital Patient" to everyone.

This book will have you laughing, cringing, maybe even crying as you easily identify with the emotions the author experienced -if you have spent much time in the hospital. It's a very unique world set inside the larger world we all live in. Entering a hospital changes many of the rules the patient is used to living by. The longer you stay, the more you learn. I have spent many days and weeks in hospitals and for many of the same reasons as discussed in this book as I too have Crohn's Disease. These stories will talk to anyone with hospital experience and will help you understand the life of a Crohn's survivor.
