Intuitive Eating, 3rd Edition

Intuitive Eating, 3rd EditionIntuitive Eating encompasses ten principles, but the main three (3) keys are these:

* Unconditional permission to eat when hungry and what food is desired

* Eating for physical rather than emotional reasons

* Reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues to determine when and how much to eat

I have been a big fan & promoter of this method since I first heard about it in 2005. Using its principles, I lost twenty-five pounds in six months while eating my favorite things (chocolate, ice cream, cheeseburgers, pizza, etc).

In this latest edition of the book, the authors have removed many of the numbers that were in the previous edition (stats, weights, heights) because they believe that it leads to self-sabotage when these are the focus. They have also added two new chapters -one that gives scientific backing to prove that IE works, and the other that focuses on how to help children and teens become Intuitive Eaters.

The chapter on kids was actually very interesting to me, as I have two of my own (ages 11 & 14), one of which is very rebellious in regards to food -he loves chips & ice cream, and it worries me that he's learning all of my own bad habits. The authors insist, though, that letting kids make their own decisions regarding food (how much, what kinds, etc) is the best method because they will intuitively get in the balanced nutrition they need, if they're left alone. It's when an issue is made of their eating habits or their weight that they start to rebel, and/or lose faith in their ability to trust their internal cues.

One thing that surprised me about this new edition was the constant reminder of how it's important to put weight loss on the back burner in the beginning of this process. The reason for this is that, if you're focused on losing weight -as opposed to just learning how to become an Intuitive Eater -you will sabotage yourself by either getting depressed over the slowness of your weight loss progress, or by seeking out other diets in hopes of quicker results.

Here are some quotes from the book that I found helpful (some of which I forgot to write the page number references for):

* bring peace to your eating life and body image (p.32)

* focus on weight loss MUST be put on the back burner while you learn to return to Intuitive Eating

* If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating (chp.1)

* undereating leads to overeating

* you can't fail at IE -it's a learning process at every point along the way (p.53)

* the more you practice, the more confidence you'll have (p.86)

* focus on continual change and learning, and start thinking in terms of what you can learn along the way (p.119)

* pause in the middle of eating to gauge your hunger level, and to ask yourself how the food tastes

* give yourself permission to eat again when you get hungry

* if you start eating when you're not hungry, it's hard to know when to stop from satiety (p.128)

* slow down while eating

* It's what you eat consistently, over time, that matters -progress, not perfection...

* Intuitive Eating means having no guilt in your eating (p.301)

Lastly, there is a chapter on eating disorders, too, and how those caught in the throes of one can seek help, and also learn to eat intuitively.

Overall, I most highly recommend this book, and this method. It is very much based on common sense, and we all know that dieting doesn't work in the long run, anyway. This method is great because you can still eat what you love, you can eat out at restaurants without worrying about blowing your `diet', and you can lose the craziness of obsessing over what food is "good/bad".

It must have been fate or divine intervention, but this book came at the perfect time for me. I had pre-ordered the 3rd edition of the book months before (waiting on the new chapter on teaching children intuitive eating), forgot I had ordered it, and in the mean time went on my usual roller coaster of dieting then overeating and gained and lost the same 5-10 lbs. I had just started a protein only diet to lose those 10 lbs again and was MISERABLE when this book arrived in the mail. I stopped my diet immediately and devoured the book in a couple days. After only a week with this book, I can already tell it will be a lifesaver for me.

It made me realize the reasons why I am overeating, which has helped me stop the cycle more than any diet rule ever has. I also am learning to enjoy my food and really savor it, leading me to eat less. I have also started exercising again, but more gentle and enjoyable exercise than when I was dieting. My biggest accomplishment so far was when I made a batch of real chocolate chip cookies, savored ONE, and felt truly satisfied. Before I would have either eaten the entire batch in a day or would not have made them at all and use substitutes that never really met the craving (leading me to over eat the cookies whenever I got my hands on them). I am still early in the process, but I can already see that this will be a healthy, balanced and enjoyable way to eat for the rest of my life.

I am starting to incorporate the chapter on intuitive eating for children (I have two preschoolers). It is scary letting my kids have what they want, I have been controlling their food intake and limiting sweets since they were born. I think this process will be harder than the work on myself. But I know it will be worth it in the end.

I pre-ordered this book after buying the 1st edition online. While the first was interesting it was seriously lacking for the times so I contacted the authors on their facebook page with questions. They let me kow that it was totally revised and had two new chapters including one about children (something I'd been wondering about since I have children). So I preordered it. Couldn't be happier. This isn't a book you sit and read quick, you have to read and work through each chapter and really think about stuff.

Don't expect this read like a gimmicky cheap diet book because It isn't a diet book! There are no before and after pictures! There is no diet lurking in the back half of the book! Refreshing, annoying at first but refreshing (no one to physically compare myself to---awesome!, Refreshing, while there is nutrition in the back they really tell you take what you want and leave the rest! REFRESHING!!

I'm just now getting to the chapter about children which is very interesting.

I've also started blogging about my experiences and become active on the official IE forum on the website.

If you are tired of diets, tired of nutrition companies whether it be food companies or pill companies telling you what you need, tired of emotional eating and what to find what causes you to overeat, and much more THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

It's so sad now to realize all the money and time I wasted in my life following or researching diets. Seeing the pain my friends and loved ones put themselves through to lose weight. They say in the book that America needs a diet attitude adjustment and they sure are right!

UPDATE: 1/3/2013

I got this book right in the middle of my pregnancy. I was told by my doctor 11-15 lbs was my weight gain limit...20 lbs max. So after frustratingly trying to count calories or eat "right" I still gained weight. I got the book in August when it was released and had my baby in December. I gained 30 lbs total and really only emotionally/boredom ate the last two weeks because really...who wouldn't being going nuts with an overdue baby inside her? Even though my doctors weren't too happy I couldn't "control myself" and not gain weight my body knew what it was doing!

I'm pleased to say this works. Yes you have to work through a lot of emotional stuff (which I'd been working on the first half of the year before IE). ANYWAY two weeks postpartum I was back within 1 lb, ONE POUND! of where I had been pre-pregnancy. I won't weigh myself again until the 6 week checkup and I doubt I will weigh myself ever again after that.

IE is easy, a pleasure, and the online community on the website is a phenomenal support system when you need to get yourself focused again. ESPECIALLY with January "diet month" being here. I can eat out or cook at home and not worry about calories, fat, points, whatever. I eat what I want, when I'm hungry, with pleasure, and stop when I'm satisfied to full.

Also I will add that I lost 3 lbs after reading the book (most likely water weight) then gained 1 lb a month for the next three months, only gaining the last 10 lbs of my weight (baby/water/etc) in the last month of my pregnancy. My body has recovered so much quicker than my first pregnancy and I feel so much better and attuned to my body. The only thing I had trouble with the first two weeks postpartum was watching my portions. I let myself eat like the hungry girl I was because for so many months I had the portioned-appetite of a squirrel....lol..now at three weeks things are balancing out.

I have been a fan of Intuitive Eating for several years now. I discovered the book during a time when I was struggling with disordered eating, having obsessive thoughts about food and my body that were making it hard to focus on anything else in my life. I have since read the book several times, and it has helped me to make peace with food and my body. I'm constantly talking about Intuitive Eating to my friends and family, because I truly believe that it can make so many people live happier, more balanced lives, free from diet worries or obsessive thoughts about food or being the ideal body size.

And this new edition is fantastic! As someone who has read the previous edition more than once, I can tell that it's been completely revised, and I appreciate the two new chapters as well-one about the science behind Intuitive Eating (which I think is great for those people who really need to see scientific evidence in order to buy into something) and another about how to raise children to be Intuitive Eaters (something I think is quite important in today's society, as more and more children are suffering from obesity and disordered eating).

If you've been on too many diets, and are tired of constantly worrying about what you "should" or "shouldn't" eat, it's time to read this book! I truly credit this philosophy with giving me my life back, and I feel that it can do the same for so many people if they just take the time to read it and live it. You won't regret it!

My nutritionist at my university lent me this book to read. I thought it would be like all of the "Weight Loss" books. It is not. You really have to read the first couple of chapters and understand when they say you can eat what you want it doesn't mean NOT to eat healthy. They are referring to when you have strong urges to not to deprive yourself of it. I saw a reviewer saying that she gained tons of weight, well she did a lot of things wrong. Obviously, you can't always expect to eat junk food and lose weight. You have to incorporate fruits, vegetables, and exercise into your diet; there's no going around that period. This book has taught me to learn to listen to my stomach and my body, so that I can stop eating when I'm full. Because of this I gained not one pound during Thanksgiving Break and in the last 2 weeks with excercising for an hr three times a week have lost 4 and a half pounds. True story.

The Beauty Cookbook: 200 Recipes to Make Your Kitchen Your Spa -- for Your Face, Your Body and Your

The Beauty Cookbook: 200 Recipes to Make Your Kitchen Your Spa -- for Your Face, Your Body and Your HairEvery single woman needs to own a copy of The Beauty Cookbook. Young or old, wealthy or not, high-end cosmetics maven or naturalista, this book is for you.

The Beauty Cookbook is the most comprehensive and practical beauty book I have ever come across. Chock full of recipes for everything (and I mean everything) you can imagine, Kym and Cindy offer women a fun and fabulous read as well as easy-to-make recipes to improve and beautify their hair, skin, nails, teeth, and body.

Have wrinkles but don't have hundreds of dollars to buy a fancy wrinkle cream? No problem. Kym and Cindy have several simple recipes that are time tested and guaranteed to produce results, without all the filler and junk in fancy creams. Dry skin? Got that covered, too. Want to create a romantic, relaxing, or stress-relieving bath? Check out the chapter on bath salts. Hair too processed, dry, damaged, oily, flat, frizzy, or dull? There's a solution here for you. Yellow teeth, yellow nails, yellow hair? The fix is in the book. The Beauty Cookbook even offers tips for a better night's sleep, improved memory, and fresher breath!

While one wonderful aspect of this book is the sheer volume of recipes it contains, women will be gratified to discover that the ingredients for these recipes can all be found right in the kitchen pantry. Seriously. A kitchen pantry stocked by Kroger. You don't have to find some local, exotic market or drop hundreds of dollars on hard-to-pronounce ingredients at Whole Foods. To make these recipes you need basic things like grapes, pineapples, oranges, cocoa powder, grapeseed oil, strawberries, honey, and baking soda. For mere dollars, you will look like a million bucks.

Please don't miss this book. It is THE book on beauty, and it has everything a woman could want: natural, affordable, easy, comprehensive, and effective recipes to enhance mind and body.

If you're looking for a beauty recipe book with tons of really great natural ingredients, this probably isn't it. With recommendations to put petroleum jelly in and on things, as well as chapstick, "your favorite eye cream," Cheerios, and the initial recipe, which includes liquid soap for your face, this book doesn't really try to be truly natural or organic.

That said, it is chock full of incredibly easy (often oneor two-ingredient) recipes that nearly anyone can put into action immediately. It reads like a tabloid sidebar, so it's definitely not heavy or too in-depth.

Who this book is for: Anyone who's never made their own beauty products but is slightly curious. Also, any desire for in-depth information will lead to disappointment here. This book is for you if you just want a fun little compilation of elementary ideas to flip through every once in a while when you're in the mood.

It would have been so very helpful if the publishers would have made sure there was a comprehensive index (that listed by either need or ingredient) instead of just a total repeat of the table of contents for an index. I still don't understand that part. :)

All in all, this book makes a concentrated effort to be easy, silly, and on par with magazines like Cosmo or Glamour. And it succeeds.

This book is full of really great, inexpensive beauty tips. My favorite tip is for brunettes: rinsing your hair with coffee to bring out the luster and shine of dark hair (that can sometimes look really dull). Great book!

Scissors and Comb Haircutting: A Cut-by-Cut Guide for Home Haircutters

Scissors and Comb Haircutting: A Cut-by-Cut Guide for Home HaircuttersThis book has a great do-it-yourself spirit. I enjoyed reading it, however, the information is most relavent if you are going to cut men's and children's hair. The book was written in the mid-80's and the women's styles are out-dated (men's styles are about the same) and the amount of material devoted to them is less than for men. Also, for some reason, the author chose female models who had very curly hair so the directions were difficult to see on them. As I bought the book to learn to cut hair on women, the book didn't meet my needs and so I rated it a 3.

The author is very passionate about his subject and I appreciate his spirit. I wish in his next revision he would add more information about cutting women's hair and improve the pictures.

I used another popular book and made a mess out of my kids hair. I was too embarrassed to even take him in and have it fixed. I found this one and I finally understood what I was suppose to be doing! This is the one you want. This is the one you NEED.

Twice I paid too much for bad haircuts for my two-year-old son and decided I could probably do no worse. I don't have time to go to barber school so I looked for a good book to give me the basics. This is that book. The photos and hair styles are outdated, but the principles are sound. Pictures and illustrations give good step-by-step instruction. I skimmed through the book a couple times, then dove right in and won praises from my wife. The book won't make you a world-class stylist, but it will teach you how to give a respectable haircut so you can keep the [money] it would have cost you in your pocket.

If you can find your way through this book, great! There is a ton of info, but with its poor design and layout, it can be challenging to get through.

This was published by a do-it-yourself publishing company and it shows.

Excessive Text

Eliminate unnecessary and confusing text. This book is helpful, but there is way too much for the reader and it confuses the issues simply because of its poor layout and design.

Update the hair models

These pictures are clearly from the 70s. Camera techniques and photos are poor. Eliminate excessive photos that just don't project detail. Although, some pencil drawings prove more helpful than photos.

Dose of quotes, proverbs, passages

Get rid of the Quotes, Proverbs, Passages from practically every page! There are famous quotes by everybody from George Carlin to Robert Louis Stevenson to Matthew and Confucious. These are distracting, run-on with the normal text and have absolutely no place in a haircutting book.

Most people who peruse haircutting books do so for home haircuts. There is a lot of info on hair shaft, hair grain, texture, hair loss, etc. Included are many pointers, tips, edge-cutting, beard trimming, short, layered, etc., etc.,

So if you have time to get through this book, happy haircutting.... Rizzo

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based NutritionI love this book! I love the recipes! I like how it is different from all the other "vegan" books out there; it is a step up. Instead of being called a vegan book it is a "whole-food plant-based" how to book. Vegan books usually contain lots of oil, sugar, salt and mock meats...Julieanna explains why all of these "anti-nutrients" are not good for you and how to get around using them in fun and delicious ways. I love the whole concept of the book. Great job Julieanna! She is an inspiration to me because I was a vegan for five years and fell off the wagon for cheese and now I am back on, thanks to her passion. This book reminded me all of the reasons I went plant-based five years ago and I will be giving this book to loved-ones as a reference because it explains everything you will ever need to know about being an herbivore!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant Based Nutrition, by Julieanna Hever is a beautifully written work which explains the importance of healthy eating. The book is designed for people who know little about plant based nutrition, and for those who are fully knowledgeable. The book may be read cover to cover or the reader can pick out items from the Table of Contents which may be of particular interest to them. I went directly to the Super Snacks (wouldn't you just know it?) chapter and really look forward to trying some of those treats. I then turned to the Super Seniors chapter because living a long and healthy life is right about where I am. Every reader will find much of interest in terms what makes us healthy and what drags us down.

Even though the title of this series of books (Idiot's Guide) would lead one to think this book is for the un or undereducated person, it is not. Mrs. Hever has done a wonderful job of presenting evidence to back up all of her positions on diet and health. In Appendix C, she provides nutrition charts which are a scholarly look at the facts regarding plant based nutrition. Anyone who has ever wondered how we really get our protein, or how many vitamins we really need, or what happens to us as we get older will find the answers clearly explained in this book. When you finish reading it you will be very well informed indeed on how to improve your total life style, and just feel better about yourself and how you provide for your family nutritionally speaking. Buy it today!

I bought this book for my wife who is a vegetarian but I felt was not getting a good, broadbased diet with all the nutrients that she needed. This book will teach vegetarians how to eat a healthy diet which is not lacking in required nutrients. I am cutting back on animal products too and this book is so helpful. A must read for any new or existing vegetarians or vegans, or anyone else who would like to explore a plant based diet. Wonderfully written and easy to follow.

I bought this book for my 80 year old mother, she is wanting to learn to go vegan in order to keep from having to take drugs for her Rheumatoid Arthritis. In just one month of trying to do it herself without guidance she is practically pain free, but she became worried that she may not be doing the right things, so I bought her this book. I read it first to make sure it would be helpful to her. It was so good I couldn't put it down, I ended up staying up all night to finish it. This book is just what she needed to answer any questions she had and alleviate any fears as to whether she was getting the proper nutrition. Plus, she found out she doesn't have to get fancy or start eating a lot of foreign foods that she can't find in her rural area and can't afford on a budget. She is thrilled with the book.

At the time of this writing, I'm down 16.5 pounds of pure fat, which has melted away thanks to a mostly plant-based diet of high nutrient-dense foods, and moderate exercise (30 minutes of elliptical machine 3-4 times per week). I've never felt healthier--both physically mentally. Julieanna is one of the smartest and sweetest women on the planet. I've hired her as a nutrition coach, I've watched her documentary, I've read her blog and made her recipes. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL folks. Even if you are coming from a meat-based diet (like me), you'll find it's not really a compromise to reduce the intake. Especially when you start to see that thinner, younger body you once knew. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and everything else Julieanna puts her stamp of approval on.

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Children: From Allergies and Animal Bites to Toothaches and TV

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Children: From Allergies and Animal Bites to Toothaches and TV Addiction, Hundreds of Doctor-Proven Techniques and Tips to Care for Your ChildThis is a small paperback with very densely printed pages. It's not for those with poor eyesight, and it's not beautiful. But it's packed with information and advice to help a parent know what to do in a variety of situations and when to call the doctor. I have three small children, and the advice to me looks sound and sensible.

This should be called "Prevention's Book of What You Can Buy At A Pharmacy". There are actually no home remedies. I would expect to find things like tea tree oil for acne, or a salt solution or garlic for an ear infection. Instead, it advises you to buy benzoyl peroxide or see a doctor for acne and warm water (and a doctor!) for an ear ache. As if people would never think to go to Walgreens and buy some zit cream! There is no mention of things we would actually have on hand to treat symptoms. It appears that every illness mentioned in the book will either resolve itself or you need to see a doctor. I cannot understand why buying drugs would be considered a home remedy unless you live in a pharmacy.

If you want to buy a book for a new mother that will actually help, buy one of the "What to Expect" books. I have used them many times when I was a new mother.

Unless one has a scientific/medical perspective, understanding fully the details of glucose in the blood can be intimidating. Dr. Brand-Miller approaches the topic from the perspective of the patient, not the doctor. A question and answer format narrows the focus of each topic. The glycemic index is an interesting concept, but for those with diabetes or prediabetes, glycemic index is not foolproof. The index was created using normal people. Those of us who have whacky systems, something that is has a low glycemic value may send out blood glucose through the roof. Interesting read, but somewhat misleading for that reason.

Going Raw: Everything You Need to Start Your Own Raw Food Diet and Lifestyle Revolution at Home

Going Raw: Everything You Need to Start Your Own Raw Food Diet and Lifestyle Revolution at HomeThis book is a great place to start if you're curious about the growing raw food scene. Judita Wignall, in a warm, practical and easy tone, explains it all. She lays out the kitchen basics including tools and techniques, offers a range of wonderful recipes from the simplest, throw-it-together-and-eat-in-your-hand wraps to wonderful tasty raw main dishes and the prettiest desserts. Each recipe has a step-by-step photo series, showing exactly how to get it done. There's nothing precious or intimidating about her recipes, and she has included foods that are not too far removed from the already familiar, like her gorgeous raw vegan pizza, and her OMG brownies.

A great feature of the book is the planned menus, and the clear and easy nutritional information. She seems to have covered all the FAQs, including what she herself eats in a day.

And...the bonus DVD, tucked inside the cover, features Judita demonstrating recipes and techniques, which just brings it all to life.

Even if you're not into raw food, the book itself is a beautiful piece of art for its design and photography alone. Just a lovely thing to look at and admire.

I can't recommend this book highly enough if you're a beginner, and need guidance on how and why and what to do.

This book is beautiful and worth it to add to any raw kitchen. I've been raw for a little over a year and have a few of the popular raw recipe books: Sarma's, Ani's Essentials, and Ani's Desserts. Around the same time I bought this one by Judita, a raw blog's ("Rawmazing", which I highly recommend!), and San Francisco's Cafe Gratitude's recipe book. But Judita's is the one I've turned to the most. It has quickly become my favorite, if nothing else than to stare at the beautiful layout and pictures!

Her recipes aren't crazy unique, but they are all wonderful and everything I've tried have all come out amazing. Also, like most raw food books, there is a great deal of information on sprouting, dehydrating, technique, and reasons to be raw. Though most raw food books all say the same thing, I still managed to learn new things and think about things I already knew in different ways, which I really appreciated. And the fact that she has a method for blooming wild rice the raw way and have it turn out just as good as cooked rice is reason ALONE to get this book! I seriously love everything about this book, so don't hesitate to go for it!

Buy Going Raw: Everything You Need to Start Your Own Raw Food Diet and Lifestyle Revolution at Home Now

I really like this book. The accompanying DVD helps, Judita is a cutie and the kitchen is trendy (complete with a gazillion other cookbooks in the background, likely intentional). The book is well organized, with WONDERFUL, LARGE COLOR PHOTOS. Collecting the materials mentioned in the book quickly turns into a scavenger hunt; finding the right, high quality goods for the best price. But it's all fun...unless you're piss poor, which many are. Some may grow disillusioned with 'healthy eating' as marketed by all but the Raw Food on a Budget book (and even that advises that one saves up for a Vitamix).

"Going Raw", like most other raw food cookbooks, require:

Vitamix centrifugal juicer masticating juicer bamboo mat zester wisk

mandoline plane slotted spoon citrus juicer dehydrator food processor

ice cream scoop spiralizer Ice cream maker Cocktail shaker wisk microplane

pie/tartlette pan Colanders (varying sizes)ceramic knives quality boilers (tea; melt cocoa)

Lg glass + SSteel mixing bowls TONS o mason jars (+ sprouting top) tongues

Bamboo cutting boards molds rubber icetrays glass measuring cups (vary sizes)

spice mill/grinder (incl stone AND ceramic) SSteel Sieves (varying mesh density)

SSteel/plastic dry measuring cup

So, we're talking about some serious cash! Not to mention the obscure nutritional supplements, sea veggies, nuts and seeds, herbs, spices, fermented goods and the like. And once THAT'S all taken care of, you'll need the TIME to actually do this stuff. Perhaps that's why it's called a lifestyle. Perhaps that's also why the USA thinks that it's considerably more expensive to eat healthier, when in fact it really isn't.

So for those who have most or all of the above-mentioned items they generally will like such cookbooks while those that don't have these items will enjoy them less. Specifically, if you're wanting to make 'bread, fries or onion rings', you'll need to get all of this stuff, because all of these tools create the RIGHT TEXTURE and AESTHETIC closest to it's cooked, non vegan counterpart. And when you've labored over the dish, you'll want it to look like the beautiful pictures in the book.

There's a colossal hamburger and onion rings on the cover of the book, so I can't feign ignorance to the mimicking other foods rabbit hole. Though I don't understand the obsession with Raw Cookbooks immulating the very stuff that culture warns that I should avoid?! Why not simply create dishes that don't mock spaghetti or coffee cake? I don't want to eat meat. So i'm not spending $50 on nuts to crumble them up and ferment them to make fake meat. I have the equipment, so I'd better use this stuff, but is it REALLY necessary to create delicious dishes?

I do like how Going Raw has a fair amount of dishes that aren't seed and nut heavy. And it's fascinating the various manipulations of coconut meat to make things like phylo dough, tortillas etc. I also realize that for those who are truly raw, they don't eat such complex dishes all the time.

Going Raw encourage mostly healthy eating, by adding lots of greens to your plate. Though many of the deserts are nut and seed heavy.

Personally, I have no regrets for having purchased the book, or many of the tools required, as I approach raw cuisine as a hobby, not a way of life. Also, this book isn't as heavy on the seeds as many others are, and for that, I commend Ms. Wignall.

I've been a raw foodie for quite a while, but I still found the recipes in this book to be inspiring as well as easy to follow. Included are many other informative tidbits of information which would really help anyone thinking about this lifestyle. I have many raw food recipe books, but this is definitely my new favouritethe pictures are colourful and inspiring, the ingredients used in the recipes are not strange or unusual and the bonus DVD is also a good bonus. The only flaw is the reliance on a dehydrator, which may deter some people from being able to make a number of the recipes. However, for anyone new to the raw food lifestyle, there are so many useful tidbits and tips that this would be a great starting purchase, and for those who have already adopted the lifestyle, the recipes are interesting and you will get a few new ideas.

I bought this as my first raw cookbook. Based on the reviews, I thought I would be able to make a fair amount of the recipes with what I had for equipmentjust a food processor. There are a few reviews with different opinions on the subject, so I thought I would use numbers to make it easier to decide whether you have what you'll need.

There are 98 recipes in this cookbook, not including the salad dressings.

24 recipes need a blender

13 recipes call for a high speed blender such as Blendtec or Vitamix.

26 recipes use a food dehydrator.

17 recipes need a food processor.

4 recipes use a mandoline.

4 ice cream recipes use an ice cream maker, which I think can be made with a high speed blender.

A few recipes use a mortar, spiralizer, coffee grinder, nut bag or a chocolate mold.

18 recipes don't use any special equipment. Many of these are salads.

I'm not saying don't buy this bookI like it a lot. After buying a Blendtec, I can make a lot of the recipessoups, smoothies, salads. But I'll need a dehydrator to make anything substantial. There are also good recipes that come with the Blendtec blendersmoothies, milk alternatives, salad dressing, sauces, soupsthat are or can easily be turned raw.

What I'm trying to say is, if you're seriously considering going raw, you'll definitely need a blender (probably high speed) and a food dehydrator. Then you'll want to get food processor, a sprouter and mandoline and nut bag. And this book! It does have very good recipes that you just know will taste great.

Update:

Creamy Tomato FettuccineI am becoming more amazed at how raw foods are really delicious. For a junk foodist like me to actually like this cold, raw zucchini pasta is saying something.

Chia puddingI liked this better than I thought also. It sounds like it might be gross, but is actually pretty tasty, although the seeds still crunch in the pudding.

Another awesome thing I noticed about this book is the repeat of ingredients which is helpful for not spending a load of money trying to learn your new lifestyle. This book has opened up a whole new culinary world for methere are so many new ways to prepare food, and they are easy, not time consuming or expensive as you might at first think.
