How to Look Good Naked

How to Look Good NakedIf you haven't seen the TV show you might not appreciate the book. But if you've seen the show, this book is a great supplement! He gives style tips for 8 body shapes (3 of which apply to me). The models are 'real' women. A chapter on undergarments convinced me that the right lingerie is essential. He describes the outline of the show, including instructions on doing your own naked-photo shoot, and also touches on hair, skin and makeup. He discourages any kind of surgery.

Gok Wan has changed my perspective on how I see myself and because of that he's positively changed my life. I hear Gok's voice in the book, "Honey, let's go forth and conquer..."

It is utterly refreshing to read the loving, accepting and empathetic words of Gok throughout this book. As a larger amazonian woman for most of my adult life, I have suffered the harshness, judgement and 'advice' from society about my weight. Too many diets, books, teachers, philosophies to rake in money. Along comes Gok.

Not only is he sensitive and disarming in his love for women of all sizes, he offers practical 'you are beautiful no matter what, but let's make the most of the beauty that you are' ideas and inspirations.

I have turned a big corner since becoming exposed to his knowledge, ideas and wisdom but the most transformational thing of all, that any reader will feel from his book, is his heart.

It's simply healing. We've been dissed, rejected and judged enough. I look beautiful now and feel beautiful. THAT is the transformation.

I recommended this book to any lady who is suffering low self esteem and who wants real-time-now help to make her feel a million bucks.

The book does not help. The same model poses for pear shape and hourglass??? (same for the other models)

Why not take Trinny and Susannah's approach and show exactly what kind of clothing each shape needs instead of showing us ball gowns? Why not use the women from the series?

Adult Children of Abusive Parents: A Healing Program for Those Who Have Been Physically, Sexually, o

Adult Children of Abusive Parents: A Healing Program for Those Who Have Been Physically, Sexually, or Emotionally AbusedThank you, Mr. Farmer, for recognizing that the hurt doesn't stop once the abuse does; for me, coping with it as an adult was more difficult than as a child because I now realize with an adult's intelligence and insight, exactly what was being done to me and how horrible it was. So much abuse is undetected until the child grows up and realizes that no, this isn't normal (I didn't realize all families weren't like this) and it WAS wrong. Too many well-meaning people minimize the adult survivor's pain or dismiss it as meaningless: "that was years ago and it's over" "get over it and move on" or the worst, "Just don't dwell on it anymore." If you haven't been abused, you don't get it and never will. thank you, Mr. Farmer, for not only understanding, but for showing us a way out. The focus on child abuse is on children, not the survivors, and we need help too.

I found that this book, although promising a fresh look at the age old problems of adult children of abuse, falls short in the long run. Adults who experienced abuse as children are usually well aware of that abuse. This book deals with uncovering the abuse, and then takes, in my opinion, controversial steps at therapy. Those steps include a "reconstruction of the past" in essence fabricating lies and letting those lies replace the truths of the abuse. I, for one, was looking for a way to defeat the anger I feel, not reconstruct my past into some idyllic existence. For me, living a lie where I remember parents who never existed would only be compounding the problem.

So, I cannot recommend this book as part of an affective regimen of therapy.

I remember reading this book over and over again at one point of life, but in retrospect, this book traumatized me in a realization of the issues I was dealing with at the time. I would call this type of book "pathology book" in stead of calling it "recovery book." It helps to understand why certain issues arise, but in life, what you do about it is more important than understanding it. This book left me so sad without a lead to a hope of living. The solution suggested in this book was not effective to me. It would have been better if a book had pathology part and EFFECTIVE treatment part.

I believe readers should note that the book was written 15 years ago, and there has been much improvement in psychology and psychotherapy. I would have given five stars if this were to be written ten years ago, but due to the gap in time and situation, I had to reduce it to four stars. It is still a great book as far as understanding your association with your care takers.

I get the idea that most of the people writing reviews of these books are Psychologists and aren't people who were actually abused.. I thought there were a few good ideas. It was good at showing what characteristics people who were abused have, but most people who were abused already know they have all these characteristics. They are trying to figure out what "normal" is and how to get from point A to point B, and to be honest if they are buying this book, they're buying this book to get help and not to come up with all the theories and all. That said, it's still better than most of the other books I've read, and it still has good ideas that are worth getting the book for. There's a section on listening to what's around you.. I had been going to the swimming pool several times a week for the past few years, and I never really heard the sounds of the water splashing, or the kids playing, or the lifeguard, or the parents sitting there, I just tuned it all out, like everything and everyone else.

but it's still not a lot of help to a person who has been abused. It's really more for therapists to be honest, and that does me little good, to be honest. but I'm still glad I got the book,a nd I don't regret getting it. Some of them are a waste.

Wonderful book for those who refuse to remain a victim, and are sincere about healing and recovery.

Farmer spends just the right amount of time in covering the types of abuse. Much of the book is spent on a step-by-step, in-depth recovery and healing process. It talks about healing one's self, dealing with parents and others, and how to break the cycle of abusive behavior.

It's not a book that says "stay a victim", and it's not a book that where every other line says "you need a therapist for any success". It's a very useful book that anyone with abusive parents can benefit greatly from.

Out of all the books I've read about abusive parents, this one has been the most useful. Thank you, Steven Farmer.

Herbs for Natural Beauty (Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Remedies)

Herbs for Natural BeautyFirst off: I love this author's books-after buying this one, I purchased her herbal book for women. This is an awesome book for those like myself who prefer shopping at natural food stores and if you like the idea of making your own beauty products. Rosemary has a warm and friendly style in this well written, easy to read book. I really like how she has enriched the book with personal beauty stories and tips not just recipes. It is a fun little book making use of herbs quite a bit with a lot of great info and recipes packed inside. Would make a great intro book to making your own products but is also a good resource for those with experience. Oh, and there is a good section defining the needed ingredients like cocoa butter, rosewater etc-she tells you what is is/what it does/and availability of the item-very helpful. Thanks to her I know that Borax makes the skin cleaner & softer-it is a great ingredient mined from the earth-not a scary manufactured chemical like I thought! I am happy to have this book as part of my natural beauty library. (I also enjoy using Janice Cox's natural beauty books.)

Having read a lot about Rosemary Gladstar, I purchased two of her books, this one and the Family Herbal. Wonderful, both of them. This Herbs for Natural Beauty has lots of wonderful recipes to 'make your own' cleansers, toners and other products. Don't be afraid of the ingredient lists: some of the things that don't sound familiar will be found in herb shops, health food stores--even some GNC's. When/if that fails, shop online! It's all very affordable.

These recipes are good for spa days, teenage sleepovers (girls would LOVE to make their own facial masks!) or just sisters wanting to relax on a Friday night. I also like to make things that I know are all natural and don't have lots of the extra stuff, and haven't been tested on animals. These are also great for people with sensitive skin (like me) or allergies to different chemicals.

The recipe I use the most is the grains cleanser with almonds and green clay and essential oils. My skin LOVES it, even better than some of the expensive stuff I've tried.

Rosemary Gladstar is a wonder, and you get this beautiful sense of her in the book. She has a website, as well.

I really do. The only thing i didnt like is that with all books I love,it was simply not long enough for my taste! (Hence the 4 *'s instead of 5)The natural beauty recipes are not only easy but work wonderfully. This lady really seems to beleive in what she writes, too. I like that! She comes across as so open ,intelligent, gentle and kind. A very down to earth book by a very down to earth woman,in my opinion. I plan on purchasing more books not only by her but from Storey publishing.

Maybe my expectations were just too high, based on the many reviews. There are a few good tips, but most of the material is easy to find on the internet, or in other books that you will have to purchase or have already purchased. I did not find the book to be very useful at all. I would have returned it, but it wasn't worth the shipping cost to return the book. If you can purchase this at half the price offered here on Amazon, I believe it would be worth the purchase. LOL

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Airborne Allergies: 100 New Cures for Symptoms from Pollen, Pets, Dust, and MoldI liked this guide to handling allergies as my daughter is allergic to dogs and mildly to cats, which we do have at home. We don't let the cats in her bedroom, and that helps a lot, but I wanted to have more ideas on how to support the immune system of an allergic person. I especially liked the herbal remedy section of the book.

The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast!

The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast!I've been following the diet in this book for almost 4 weeks and am absolutely amazed at the results. Just to clarify where I started at 129 lb. but with a 31.5 inch waist I'm 5'4" and 59 years old (female). I was not interested in losing any weight particularly, just the 'spare tire'/'muffin top' or whatever else you want to call the unappealing impenetrable flesh that seems to gather around the middle. Within the first 10 days I had dropped down to 124 lb. but more importantly lost 2.5" off my waist that I've been trying to lose for about 10 years. My own plan will be to go back and do the plan again from the beginning as they recommend at this point and to continue on this program until I have lost the next few inches. There are many negative comments about the technical aspects of the book written by many people that have been studying this type of nutrition intensively as have I. And I must disagree with all the complaints. This book tells you what to do, what to eat and why. There is sufficient explanation to work the plan and get yourself on track to the body you remember. Best of health to all of you!

I truly wanted to like this book more than I did. I've been a fan of the Eadeses since I first read Protein Power back in 1997, and I currently follow their blogs regularly. I'm a proponent of low carb dieting for health reasons and have followed a low carb diet for a while now. But I also am no longer losing any weight on it (though still have a long way to go), so keep looking for things to get the scale moving again.

So I had a lot of expectations from this book. Admittedly I am only on my 5th day of following their plan (at least as best as I can, more about later...) and so far have not lost any weight, and am hungry constantly, yet perhaps suddenly something will kick in and I'll start to see something miraculous....

But the book itself was just a disappointment in so many ways. The actual information contained in the book is quite slight, and very lacking in detail. Perhaps this is a channeling of my inner geek, but what I loved about Protein Power was the detailed science of why it works. But there is little of that here. As an example, one of the things they tell you to use is something called DAG oil. The advantage of DAG oil, they say, is that it is 80% diglycerides rather than triglycerides as most oils have, and this gives it an ability to help reduce the fat in the body. But they give no details at all about this or why it works. And thus I'm very hesitant to use an oil that is extensively processed from the already heavily processed soy and canola oils, both of which have extremely unfavorable omega 6/omega 3 ratios (as does DAG oil) and neither of which I would ever touch.

But the Eadeses blithely say to replace a daily tablespoon of the oil you usually use with DAG oil... Hmm how about us folks who don't use oil at all because we feel that animals fats and butter are better choices?

However my biggest gripe with this book is that it does not give any real guidelines to follow for what to eat. The first two weeks is the 3-and-1 plan, three protein shakes a day plus a low carb meal. The recipe for the shakes is pretty conclusive and easy to follow. But what about the meal?

Instead of giving you guidelines they give you pages and pages and pages of menus, followed by all the recipes. At least half this book is a cookbook, and I didn't pay good money to pre-order this book from Amazon in order to get a cookbook. Cookbooks, menus and recipes I *don't* need. I just want a good simple guideline of what the meals should consist of but the menus are so all over the place it's not that easy to figure out what to eat on your own.

They recommend that if you don't care for something in a menu to consult the substitution lists at the back of the book. Okay, I have some spinach at home, and I noted spinach used in some of their recipes, so I consulted the substitution lists to see how much spinach was considered a "serving". But spinach was not even on the list despite showing up in recipes!

They also stress the importance of saturated fat, yet the amount in the recipes seems pretty low. One meal menu, for example, just says "hard boiled eggs, smoked salmon, 3-4 tomato slices". And that's it? No mayo, butter, oil or anything? Just dry eggs, and dry salmon and dry tomato? Maybe you are allowed to use oils and fats, but I can't find anywhere that says so. When I run the compoments of the daily diet through nutritional software it comes out far lower in fat than I am used to, and far lower than is typical on a low carb diet, which may be why I am so hungry all the time.

Then in weeks 3-4 you go into a more Atkins-induction type diet, but even here it's sometimes difficult to know what is allowed. The rules for weeks 3-4 list foods that can now be added as well as subtracted, but nuts are nowhere mentioned in the rules. Yet many of the recipes use almond flour, pine nuts, macadamia nuts. So what is the status of nuts?

Not to mention that nuts and nut flours don't show up in any of the substitution menus at the back of the book which have only simple lists of veggies and fruits, so there is no way to know how or when nuts and nut flours can be used, or what they may or may not be substituted for.

This almost gives me a feel of a book that was rushed to publication, and yet I know its publication date was held up for months, so was not really a rush job. I don't want to give it only 1 or 2 stars as the Eadeses are among my nutritional heroes. But neither can I give it 5 starts, dearly as I had wanted to before receiving the book...which also arrived 4 days after the people who preordered from Barnes and Noble got theirs!

NOTE: I am just editing my review to add that I may well not be the intended audience for this book. I am not your casual middle-aged person who knows nothing about diet but would like to flatten my waistline a bit. I have an extensive diet library and have been studying low carb since I was first blown away by "Protein Power" in 1997. I really wanted this book to be of the caliber of "Protein Power" and I don't feel it comes close.

But for someone who is totally new to low carb, who doesn't much care about what gets them a flatter middle, and just wants to be told what to do and what to eat to get there, then perhaps this book will fill that need.

My husband and I went on this diet; we are both in our 50s. He's in good shape, but wanted the flat belly of his twenties. I wanted to lose the 10-20 pounds I'd gained over the decades. He likes protein; I love carbs. Yet both of us succeeded, and amazingly it came right off our waists.

Around day five, both of us were finding it really difficult to handle the restrictions. But we hung in there together, turned the corner a day or so later, and found our cravings had subsided. Once that happens, it is really easy to stay on because your weight drops and you look great. We both lost 8 lbs in the first 2-3 weeks. You don't just lose weight; you lose it in places that are all too visible. Three months later, we are both enjoying eating this way. For the first time in decades I weigh less than I weighed when I became pregnant with my son 19 years ago. This is a great diet -we are both committed for the long term.

Like many of the other reviewers, I have followed the Eades' work for years. I've appreciated their scientific explanations of how things work in the body and their recommendations of supplements and other guidance on how to eat healthfully and lose weight. But sometimes you just feel, "tell me what to do and I will do it." All those reviewers quibbling over the book and saying they expected more avoided trying the diet. My advice is to try it yourself -because it works!

This book provides a helpful and effective diet plan, but I felt it was somewhat marred by inconsistencies, by the not fully explained requirement for three shakes and one meal a day in the first two weeks, and by the inclusion of one or two 'magic practices' that seemed like the earmarks of a fad diet.

But I figured "What the hey, I've never done one of those weird fad diets where you lose 15 pounds, why not give it a try once in your life?"

I already knew from reading "Rethinking Thin" by NY Times reporter Gina Kolata, that low carb and low calorie diets have been found to be equally effective, with the low carb producing results more quickly.

So I tried this one and for me it really worked. In six weeks.

Like most Americans, over the years I have been interested in diets and diet books and, also like most Americans, over the years I have maintained my overweight status -that is, until I found the Eades website, got this book, and tried to follow their diet plan.

I say I "tried" to follow it, because there was no way I could have one meal and 3 protein shake meals a day. I thought I would be able to do it, but no dice. The diet is just too hard. I think it is a flaw of the book that the reasoning of exactly why the protein has to be liquid is not given. I just was not ok eliminating so much solid food. It gave me kind of an odd feeling in the head, I can't really describe it exactly. I didn't like it much, but I tolerated it ok.

By the time I was ready to start my six week stint, I had actually been on board already for a month with no sugar, no caffeine, no wine and not many carbs. So that part was ok. And, like the Eades earlier Low Carb book, which I recommend you obtain, the 6 Weeks Cure has really good recipes. I just didn't understand why the protein for all except 1 meal has to come from shakes (in the first two weeks) and it's basically up to them to provide a compelling explanation, which I felt they did not do.

I took a practice run before the book arrived using one of Eades's older books that has a one-shake-a-day plan, which I found I could do. After I fried my blender by putting the Leucine powder in before the water, I mixed protein powder with yogurt until I noticed that the yogurt had a bunch of lactose, in other words sugar. Oops! Still, I lost weight. And ordered a new blender blade via Amazon.

I had other cavils. The Eades recommend DAG oil, which supposedly can be obtained as Enova oil, as something that may contribute to fat loss. However, Enova has been off the market for so long that no one at the supermarkets even remembers hearing of it anymore, and I was not convinced by the authors' account of the studies supporting its use. Maybe they will eliminate this non-helpful section on DAG oil from the second edition.

The suggested idea to donate blood to cleanse yourself of your toxins I found strange, even though the authors say not to worry about passing your toxin-laden blood on to someone else. Well, then those toxins must not be all that bad in the first place, right? The reasoning seemed confused. Similarly they talk about quitting all alcohol for the first two weeks, and are completely convincing about why. But then they say in the 3rd and 4th week, you can drink a little bit of wine. I guess the human animal is fundamentally inconsistent, at least when it comes to reasoning about dieting.

They suggest a Leucine supplement to make sure of fat loss rather than muscle loss, so I did this, but I would have liked to know whether you can cook with Leucine (probably not), and also specifically whether they themselves continue it as a supplement (as they do all the vitamins) after the 6 weeks are over. It's nasty stuff, so I would recommend the pill form, since the powdered form is bitter and does not mix well, making Splenda and an additional mixer (protein powder of a different flavor that the usual chocolate, perhaps) essential.

Getting Leucine and (optionally if you're working out) D-Ribose from Amazon made me feel like I was patronizing one of those dubious Canadian internet pharmacies, once I inspected the shipping labels, and also noticed that I was unable to buy these substances at the over-the-top health aisle of any of my local Whole Foods markets. It was really worth getting D-Ribose tablets, though, rather than the powdered form.

One thing I didn't expect was to be losing fat off the soles of my feet. Did this really happen to me? I had to go out and get better-padded trail shoes in order to keep hiking the same amount. Who the heck wants thinner soles of their feet?

The "suck-in-your-stomach" exercise is actually a fairly complex and difficult exercise. I think you have to practice it a lot in order to do correctly. I ended up substituting the "vacuums" exercise from page 162 of Kurt Brunhardt's Complete Book of Abs, and probably got the same effect.

I really appreciated the phrasing on making sure you take your 400mg potassium supplements with magnesium to help make the potassium effective ("We implore you to heed our advice"). It has been a long time, if ever, since anyone has implored me.

Starting the regimen in late November, I found Thanksgiving the ideal lo-carb holiday. There is plenty of turkey, and no one cares if you don't take huge portions of all the carbs, which you can still enjoy tasting in minuscule portions. I lost a little weight over the long weekend. Christmas and New Years weekends were a different matter entirely but by then I was nearly in the last two weeks, so my spirits went up, as did the downward curve of my weight loss graph. I found myself able to say "I can celebrate; after all, I'm not overweight anymore," and caught up with the downward curve of the weight graph after the first of the year.

Even though I found some of the authors' reasoning inconsistent & incomplete, and the diet impossible to stick to strictly -I found I was always going for an extra snack, and I'm a person who does not believe there is any such thing as "one quarter of a grapefruit" - I still lost about ten pounds, and see how I could probably lose 5 more without too much trouble.

On the other hand, I don't know how well this book will work for people find that they need to repeat the 6-week cycle a couple of times to reach their goal.

I'll wrap this up with dessert. Using the recipe in the book for vanilla ice cream, I made just about the best vanilla ice cream EVER. (The recipe doesn't use sugar, but you would never guess it by the taste.) If this entire book were as good as their vanilla ice cream recipe, it would definitely get five stars. Or maybe eleven.

I hope you found these comments helpful.

I've previously read the Protein Power Life Plan (PPLP) by the same authors and would recommend this book (CURE) as a follow up to that one. The first part of this book is chock full of useful information for people already familiar with the principles of restricted-carbohydrate dieting. That being said, there were a few times where I thought "If I didn't already know a lot about this topic, I wouldn't know what that scientific term meant."

By the time the book reached Part 2, it felt like I was being rushed to the end. There's a page that lists supplements to take, but the book barely touches on why they are important. I know the first time I saw the price of CoQ10, I winced. I wouldn't have purchased it if I hadn't been armed with the crucial information that the Eades presented in PPLP. Sadly, none of that explanation is in this book.

Also in Part 2, we learn that the plan involves two weeks of drinking three shakes a day with one sensible meal. Apparently, this is the Eades answer to wanting to suggest an all meat diet in a culture that won't accept such a thing. Last time I checked, most people spout off about meal replacements as much as they do low carb diets. If the right answer to the middle-aged middle is indeed all meat, I wish the book would have just stuck to that philosophy.

The last third of the book is dedicated to recipes. I personally dislike diet books that do this, but if you want recipes, then you're in luck. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who has previously read PPLP or Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. The new scientific information in Part 1 will supplement your existing knowledge and is worth the price.

Quick & Handy Home Remedies

(Q&As for your common ailments)

By: Joe and Terry Graedon

These are strange and frequently disturbing times, times when a source of entertainment frequently tells you the medicine your doctor wants you to "try" well there's a strong possibility it might kill you. Kill you, cause blindness, render skin rashes or heart stoppage.

This is not to say you should distrust your doctor or his medicines, but ideal, before you might meet an unfriendly medicine, you could encounter a home remedy, say an ounce of vinegar, soaking your raisins in sloe gin one which could keep you away from the medicine altogether. It was affirming when I learned my new doctor also takes the Joe and Terry Graedon's email newsletter.

The book is divided into three parts Home Remedies for specific ailments, Favorite Foods, and their nutritional bonuses and finally, Eating for Health.

The Joe and Terry Graedon are not physicians but scholars who hold graduate and doctoral degrees respectively. This book will compliment any family bookcase as a helpful guide to what ails you, when your complaint isn't life threatening.

Part I, (sample cases)

Complaint: Canker Sores -Aloe vera, baking soda, baking soda, buttermilk, green beans, kiwi, Mylanta even styptic pencil. They present a letter from a sufferer, and then they offer their response. It's valuable to hear the patient's complaints and helpful to be able to try some of the suggested solutions. They present instances from acne to wound card.

Complaint: Plantar Fasciitis, solutions using cherry juice, others using fish oil came in.

Complaint: Heartburn brought solutions from using almonds, baking soda, banana, broccoli even chewing gum.

Complaint: Nail Fungus was controlled with cornmeal, dandruff shampoo, hydrogen peroxide, iodine. Listerine, urine and Tea Tree Oil.

Second portion, Part I, Favorite Foods

From coffee through mustard, pineapple to hot peppers, cinnamon to cherries, they have chosen 24 in all. For instance, oolong tea has been helpful for fibromyalgia.

Part II: Fine a discussion on certain popular diets and some menu suggestions along with select recipes.

In these times when so many lack medical insurance, an investment in this book might be a good idea.

I have already had occasion to pull the book out twice and look for a home remedy (once for a burn and once for a leg cramp)...and both worked great! There are many things that happen in our daily lives that are annoying and/or painful, but do not merit a doctor's visit. This book is easy to use and great for these occurences!

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That WorksThis is the first book I read on intuitive eating. It really made a lot of sense to me. I researched intuitive eating online, looking at the relevent studies. There's not much research, yet, but the research does support intuitive eating. Just knowing that diets fail 95% of the time, on average, tells the story right there.

I jumped right into this eating approach with both feet about a month ago. When I started this diet I was a restrictive eater/binge eater. I was about 10-15 pounds overweight. I weighed myself one to four times a day. I never kept any food in the house that might truly make me want to eat a lof of it. Then, when I was out and had access to food that I craved, I would binge heartily. I'm extremely knowledgeable about nutrition, and only allowed myself to keep whole grains, no trans-fats, etc. in the house.

I really thought that I had a very healthy approach toward food. Then, I started intuitive eating a month ago. At first, it was stadium franks, hot dogs, chocolate, cream horns, turnovers, and a lot of them. I weighed myself recently, and found that I had only gained 3 pounds after eating this way to my heart's content. I stopped when I felt satisfied, and only ate when I felt hungry.

Just recently, do I feel the need for sugar/fat tapering. I'm starting to crave strawberries and cooked cabbage. I'm down to 2 cream horns a day, instead of 5. I don't even care to eat most of the other sugary food I keep around. I have to throw it out. My pants are starting to feel like they're loosening back up slowly.

I can't believe it. I'm 33. I've obsessed about my eating, dieted and binged (sometimes on a daily basis) for the past 18 years, only to weigh more than ever.

Now, to be surrounded by the food I always craved and binged on, and to not even want it is amazing!!!!

I can't support this concept enough.

Trust you body!!!! It knows what it's doing!

I really have to disagree with Yvonne's comment "But obese people do not start being overweight due to dieting!" As a child I always enjoyed eating, but I was not overweight. In fact, I didn't think too much about food at all. I went on my first diet at age 15, with the goal of losing 5 lbs. After I lost 5 lbs by eating a lot of salad and little else, I could fit into all my jeans and a few people commented on how good I looked. I was hooked.....I lost another 5 lbs. and looked great (probably too thin, but I thought I looked great!), but the constant restricting and hunger made me start to obsess about food! I would end a 2 day fast by eating an entire bag of cookies....My first diet was the beginning of a 20 year cycle of fasting and compulsive eating that left me 75 lbs overweight. I've been in lots of Compulsive Eating support groups over the years and I've heard the same story. If you put a child in a room filled with candy and junk food and tell her to eat whatever she wants, the food will quickly lose much of it's appeal......or tell her not to eat one bite and see how important that food becomes....

This book addresses many of the issues behind compulsive eating, and with lots of work on my part, it made me sane again (and 60 lbs lighter).

Buy Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Now

Imagine never having to worry about what you eat. Imagine being one of "those" people who can eat whatever they want whenever they want and never gain a pound -even lose weight! Don't you hate those people? What if you could be just like them? What if you knew their secret (that even they probably don't know)?

This book is the only "plan" you'll ever need to get off the dieting roller coaster and become a healthy eater. Skeptical? So was I. However, after a year of practicing Intuitive Eating, I am a COMPLETELY different person.

Be warned: it is not a quick fix. In fact, quick fixes are PRECISELY the reason we end up yo-yo dieting. Intuitive eating is not a diet at all. I know you've heard this before -even from actual "diets" like Weight Watchers -but, in fact, there is NO PLAN to intuitive eating. That's the whole point! You learn to eat what you want, what you need, and what feels good to your body. Your body already knows what's healthy for it and when you get rid of your emotional baggage about food, your shame, hidden eating, and all the other food behaviors you wish you could stop but feel enslaved to, you actually begin to enjoy food again!

Since I live in Southern California, I've had the privilege of consulting with Ms. Tribole (one of the authors) as a dietitian and nutritionist in my quest to overcome compulsive overeating. This book completely changed my life. I will be forever grateful to the authors.

Read Best Reviews of Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Here

I've read several comments that said that no one who reviewed this book mentioned that they had actually lost weight, and that therefore, this book is just giving overweight people permission to eat badly. So let me just clear that up right now. I read this book (an earlier edition) in 2000, and lost 40 pounds in the next 2 years. In the 4 years after that, I lost an additional 25. And...I've kept it off.

This book does give readers permission to eat what they want, but not to eat AS MUCH as they want. It teaches you to pay attention to your body, to your hunger and fullness signals, and to how certain foods make you feel. And once you've got that down, then it goes into nutrition.

My biggest problem was eating food just because it was there--and adding to that, the habit of ordering the largest size at restaurants. Once I learned to pay attention to what I was eating, and experimenting with smaller servings, the weight just dropped off. It may not work for everyone, but here is one woman who it did work for.

Let's face it, in this day and age it IS virtually impossible to eat 100% intuitively--we all have times when we eat for reasons other than hunger--many of us have jobs where we have set meal times, we are guests at other people's houses, etc. But even if you are able to learn to eat intuitively 50% of the time, it is an improvement.

So it goes without saying that I highly recommend this book. It's not conventional diet wisdom, but if that was what worked, we wouldn't have a multi-billion dollar weight loss industry, would we?

About 5 years ago a friend tried to explain to me how she lost weight and had kept it off for so long. She told me that the only reason I overeat is because I restricted that food. I sort of understood what she was saying, but not really. She told me to practice listening to my body: what do i want to eat? am i full yet? etc.

Well, it took a few years of pondering her words, then I found this book, and finally it clicked!! WOW!! What a relief! I lost about 17 pounds two years ago and I have been the same weight since then. I eat WHATEVER I want to eat. There's not one food that is off-limits.

Here's the essence of the book: pick whatever your most favorite food is and allow yourself to eat however much you want. For me, it was Oreos. I could eat an entire package in one sitting. So, imagine that you go to the grocery store, you buy one dozen packages of Oreos. Everyday after today you receive another dozen packages of Oreos on your front step. Basically, you have a neverending supply of Oreos. How many are you actually going to eat? Maybe the first day you eat three packages. Guaranteed, by the end of the first week or two, if you are still eating them, you'll be eating only a couple Oreos at a time because you literally don't want to eat anymore.

Another food that was hard for me was french fries. Why do I eat all of my fries even when I'm stuffed? I realized it was because I knew in the back of my mind that I was going to try to avoid eating fries in the future, so I knew I better eat them all right now while I can!

If you tell yourself (and you have to really mean it, too) that you will go back and get more fries in an hour, or ten minutes, if you really want to, then you will never overeat! Why would you make yourself uncomfortable? If you are making yourself uncomfortable, you are doing it because you think you won't get to buy more of it later (either because of a self-imposed restriction or because you think you need to get your money's worth). It took lots of practice, but now anytime I go out to eat, I hardly have to remind myself that I will come back and buy more later if I want to. It's a true habit to not get uncomfortably full.

For those of you who feel like you need to get your money's worth in food, just remember this: if it goes in the trash, it's wasted and if it goes in your body, it's wasted. No matter what you do, it's wasted food. Your body doesn't need it or want it.

My relationship with food is now peaceful and calm. I no longer have any kind of anxiety about going out to dinner or going to a party where there's going to be food. I used to think about what I was going to eat for lunch for hours before lunch and think about dinner as soon as lunch was over. Now, when it's dinner time, I start thinking about dinner. My mind is at peace. And I have Oreos in my pantry :)

Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival

Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical SurvivalThis book covers all aspects of preparedness, from food storage to weapons caching. Extensive source material is provided, including web addresses, stores and books for further study. Spigarelli does not preach or lecture. Unlike many other books on the subject, there is no overt religious point of view or political agenda. Spigarelli merely suggests that it is sensible to prepare for whatever eventualities the reader expects and provides the tools to do so. This is a book to read thoroughly and keep as a reference. The details on food storage alone are well worth the price.

Now in an updated second edition, Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide To Home Storage And Physical Survival by Jack A. Spigarelli is a solid, practical, no-nonsense, but completely "user friendly" reference for the selection and acquisition of stockpiled food and water for emergencies; growing, raising, and finding food; preserving food at home by means such as home canning and dehydrating; emergency evacuation in a crisis; and other preparation safeguards for weathering a natural or man-made crisis. From clothing issues to transportation needs and communication alternatives, the Crisis Preparedness Handbook is a solid, fact-filled, potentially live saving guide, and especially recommended reading for anyone seeking to protect themselves and their loved ones in times of local, regional, national, or international calamity.

This is quite an extraordinary book. I read a lot, mostly non-fiction, and I give this author credit for doing an absolutely tremendous job of research, of book construction, and of presentation.

THe bulk of the book is about food and water--stockpiling, production, and preservation are the three largest chapters--but the rest of it is completely useful as well.

The resources section is lengthy, explicit, diverse, and totally helpful.

I put the book down with a comment to my wife that survival is very hard work, and preparing for survival is almost as hard. This book does everything possible to help you get started. It is chock full of gems, for example, plan on 26 rolls of toilet paper per person per year. I had no idea!

I also admire the author for being blunt about not favoring "retreat homes." His common sense view is that you have two choices: move now, or prepare your existing home for survival. His thinking, that it may be impossible to GET to your retreat home (or, I would add, once you get there, take it back from the armed strangers that have broken in and will kill you on sight) makes perfect sense.

This is not the only book you want. I admire the two spotlighted reviews very much, and have kept my own review short because of the excellence of the other reviews. Let there be no doubt: this book is worth every penny, and every minute of your time.

I recommend a four-part approach to preparedness: a below-ground safe room and iodine pills, train the kids to go deep and sit for three days in case of a nuclear event; a 3-4 week supply of water, food, and essentials that assumes NO ELECTRICITY; a one-year rudimentary supply kit; and a neighbohood association to study and prepare for survival as a group.

Having just started 'stockpiling' and emergency preparedness, this book has been our bible. It is comprehensive, informative, and easy to follow, even (especially??) for newbies like us. The advice is practical and never preachy. It can be read cover-to-cover or as a guide by just going to specific chapters that you need info on. It is not, like so many other resources on the subject, doomsday oriented; and it works well for disasters and the like or just helping one to prepare for the leaner times that sometimes arise in life.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject matter as well as for people you'd like to 'gently' introduce to it. I'm buying several copies for friends and family.

Definitely 2 thumbs up!

Want Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival Discount?

This book will not help you survive an emergency that you have not prepared for, but it will help you prepare so that you avoid emergencies in the first place.

Just as the title says, this is a preparation handbook. It will help you prepare the place you live so that you can make it through tough times in relative safety and comfort.

No, it will not help you learn to forage for nutritious weeds, track NWO soldiers to their base in the forest, or how to most efficiently loot the bodies of the dead. On the other hand, it will help you decide what food to store and how much, how to keep your electricity running, how to keep a working water supply, and includes a very brief section on guns.

I've read a lot of self-sufficiency books and this is one of the most well rounded that I have encountered. If you are already a survival nut, this won't cover any new ground, but if you have people in your life you are just beginning to show some interest in self-sufficiency, there is probably no better introduction.

EcoBeauty: Scrubs, Rubs, Masks, and Bath Bombs for You and Your Friends

EcoBeauty: Scrubs, Rubs, Masks, and Bath Bombs for You and Your FriendsI ordered this book from a book club, sight unseen, and I'm not sorry I did! There were so many recipes that I could make right away; some books have exotic ingredients that you have to go online to fine. I live in BFE, so I'm thankful that most of the ingredients I could find at the local grocery/health food store. I already made the chocolate massage bar, the cupcake bath bombs, and shea butter lotion. My sons loved the chocolate milk bath. Buy it, you won't be sorry!

I'm so thrilled with this book. I brought it home and my 12 1/2 year old daughter vanished with it. Soon pages were full of post-it notes marking the items she wanted to make. By bedtime she'd made a shower gel and an anti-acne honey potion. She is just coming of age with skin problems and is aware of how many chemicals there are in conventional products (she reacts to the SLS that is in most shampoos, even some of the ones at Whole Foods). This book totally pays for itself in what you save on beauty products.

Buy EcoBeauty: Scrubs, Rubs, Masks, and Bath Bombs for You and Your Friends Now

Hm, where to begin? This is actually the first book that I have actually purchased on making your own all-natural, eco-friendly bath products. While I'm no expert on the subject, I'm also not brand new to it or to the world of food and the benefits it can provide. My mother is Asian, so I've grown up with similar recipes and knowledge of how all natural food items from your fridge and/or pantry is good for your body, inside and out. My mom would take weekly milk baths, use egg masks daily, fresh orange peels on her hands and other such things as her beauty regimen.

That being said, I still found this book to be very useful and have a nice variety of recipes. Like I said before, I already knew a little, so some of the stuff wasn't new to me but I still think this is a great book, especially for beginners. It's pretty much straight to the point, very easy to understand and not confusing in anyway. The variety of recipes to try is nice and easy enough that even my 7 year old has made a few! Some of the beauty 'tips' were a little bit obvious(i.e. more sleep, regular exercise, drink plenty of water)but there were other tips that were quite useful and interesting(my favourites were the tips on the bath salts and the ones in the gift giving section).

Even before reading up on the back flap on who the authors were(I've never heard of Lauren or Janice Cox before I purchased this book), I could tell that it was written by someone that was fairly young. There was nothing bad about the book or anything specific, but it gave me a feeling as if it was written for teens but that isn't neccessarily a bad thing. I think this would be an excellent book to give a young pre-adolescent girl and the tips in the book that seemed obvious to me, can be very useful to a young girl who is just starting her journey into the overwhelming world of womanhood and cosmetics.

I do like that the recipes are stuff that most people actually do have in their kitchen; I have almost all of the ingredients I need to try out practically every recipe in this book right this second! There are so many books out there that claim to have "all-natural, organic" recipes but than turn out to be just a bunch of essential oils mixed with something like olive oil. Not really my idea of being easily or readily available since I'd have to actually purchase EO as I do not really keep it around the house. I really like being able to use things that I already have, especially if I have an abundance of fruit in the house.

I really only found three specific things about the book that I did not like:

1)I don't like the idea of using Borax powder. So I will have to do some research and see if there is another alternative or if I can just skip the Borax all together. Don't let that turn you away from this book though! I think there were only two recipes in the entire book that called for it and I'm sure that it can subsituted in some way or left out.

2)The tip for 'Natural Breath Freshners' list Mint Leaves and Parsley Sprigs. I watch food and cooking shows and my favourite ones are the ones that give you the more scientific side. I watched one where they did testing on the items that most people use/do to freshen their breath after eating and come to find out that, contrary to popular belief, mint and parsley actually do not make your breath smell better. In fact, parsley actually makes it smell worse! The best thing is brushing your teeth. I tend to just sugar-free gum or mini travel size toothbrush and toothpaste.

3)There were a few recipes that called for liquid soap but there isn't a liquid soap recipe in the book. She does say in the beginning that you can take left over scraps of bar soap and mix it with water to make liquid soap or to just buy all-natural clear liquid soap. That's not really my idea of 'eco-friendly' but I have ordered a book on liquid soap making so I will just use one of those recipes instead. I did like the idea of keeping the hotel soaps and making liquid soap that way if you want, since they do just get thrown out after each guest leaves, so I liked that she put that little bit of info in there.

Really, the things that I didn't like aren't that big of a deal, which is why I'm not going to give this book a low rating. Overall, I think this book is an excellent book since it's full of really easy, basic recipes and I think this would be an especially big hit for young girls to try them out at a slumber party! I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a shot at making their own natural beauty and bath products at home. The recipes are simple, easy, fast and fun!

I received this book for Christmas and I have been having so much fun with it. I was able to make a ton of the recipes just from stuff I already had in my house. Everything is really simple to make and I love the fact that I know exactly what I'm putting on my skin. I have really liked everything I have tried so far and have had only one minor unpleasant experience. The hair rinse that calls for powdered kelp works really well and gave my hair awesome shine, but my hair was soooo stinky afterwards and it took 3-4 washings before the smell finally went away. But I'm very pleased with this book and would definitely recommend it.

I received this book from my good friend. I can tell you the first recipe I tried was go bananas hair conditioner. This conditioner smelled so yummy. The mix of coconut oil, banana and raw honey is out of this world. My hair is very curly and dry. I wasnt sure if this conditioner would help me. I decided to give it a try anyway. I am so happy that I did because my hair was manageable and soft. My hair was so shiny and looked so healthy after doing this conditioner. I have also made the strawberry cleanser and the green tea toner. Everyone will have fun making there own skin, body and hair care products. I recommend this to everyone not just young ladies. Your going to look great, save money and go green. Janice and Lauren Cox have done a great job on this book.

How to Make Millions with Your Ideas: An Entrepreneur's Guide

How to Make Millions with Your Ideas: An Entrepreneur's GuideDan Kennedy wrote this book to be helpful and is genuinly insightful for the reader. "How to Make Millions with Your Ideas" is dated material, but helpful and inspiring. Dan is candid and has a ton of practical knowledge to offer in this book. I can recommend this book because it delivers what is says it will; 8 different approaches to making your ideas work and make money. More recently his books are the longest sales letters ever written, all designed to get you to buy more of the same material from him.

However, be warned he hates the internet and would like to ignore it. He wrote this in 1996 and the web was really forcing these old school guys to deal with it. So if you were looking for help with anything "e" related, like I was, this is not the book for you.

Ironically, the two companies I found relevant to my marketing have been indited or convicted and are now out of business. I thought I would learn more about these companies after reading about them in this book. So I Googled them and found court cases and a bunch of nastiness. Interesting! Again, the book was written in 1996 and I read it in Mid-September 2007, anything can happen. Right?

If you are looking for a book that is truly helpful with "e" marketing or is at least current STAY AWAY from "The Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing" I finished it a few days ago and was very disappointed; it kept referencing me to their website for the information I really bought the book for. If you really want to learn how to be a Junk-Mail Jockey or a Spammer skip buying that book and go directly to the Kennedy-Glazer web site and be prepared to spend BIG BUCKS for the real information.

As someone who doesn't live in the US, I am continually amazed by Americans who complain about lack of opportunity to make money. Nowhere else in the world has the money making opportunities of the US, NOWHERE! And I've lived in many countries and visited a lot more to boot.

This book is really about taking your ideas for products and services and revving them up with excellent ways to market and sell them. It's also chock full of excellent examples of people who have done just that. Real people that is, with REAL obstacles and sometimes almost no money, who got off there derriere and did it.

I found myself thinking lots of ideas for when I get back home. Admittedly I lot of ideas simply don't translate to my home country, but the really great thing about the book is it's attitude. Everywhere in the world, even in communist countries, people go out each day and make and spend money. Getting a slice of that money is what this book is really about.

This book is very typical Dan Kennedy. That is to say it is based on years of experience and he tells it like it is. He does not give theory but gives specific examples of what works and what does not work.

There are some very basic truth gems in fact hidden in the book. You might miss them if you haven't been there and experienced the same situation yourself. One of the very basic truths is, "Wealth is most often linked with exclusive ownership or control." You may make a fortune with someone's idea or product, but you stand a much better chance with your own. Another basic truth is if you can find a product that gives people more time, that is if your product or service saves the customer/client time, then you can make a fortune.

Dan gives great advise don't concentrate on making money, instead concentrate on delivering a better product or service. You will never get rich competing on price ... so go for quality.

Dan made and is still making a fortune from coaching and direct marketing. He started with little or nothing and learned the hard way, through experience. You would do well to read the book for all the lessons. You will be learning from a master.

This book is more of a autobiography then anything else. It really doesn't tell you anything you already know of. Its a little bit inspiring but not much else. It basically gives you a run down on already successful business, but not the real meat of what you're looking for.

The cover of the book says; HOW TO.... make Million$ with your ideas. But instead Dan gives you a history lesson on things you already know. The book didn't tell you "HOW TO" do anything. But it dose have plenty of things on what NOT TO DO. The only reason I bought this book is to know "HOW TO" do something like; Making a presentation to the market, or to a company without worrying about them steeling your ideas, something along those lines. I don't even know how this book got so many good reviews, but I know now not to buy anything less then 4 stars.

But above all, my main concern is whats on the front cover that says; "Get a free product marketing evaluation." But what Dan didn't tell you is in the last few pages in the book that says; A certificate to send a brief description of YOUR product, photos, literature, etc., with your questions about this product to see if it sells or not. And underneath your address you put in it says;

NO CONFIDENTIALITY GUARANTEED.

.....!!!!!!!

Hey Dan why not go ahead and ask them for there SS card and credit cards numbers too?

What the title of the book should have said was; How to make ME Million$ with YOUR ideas.
