Taste of Home: Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Quick & Easy Favorites: Slim Down with 427 Satisfying

Taste of Home: Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Quick & Easy Favorites: Slim Down with 427 Satisfying Recipes!I love this series but this cookbook has the exact same recipes as previous ones. I will not purchase any new ones until they start putting new recipes in it. Otherwise it's like buying the same book twice just different covers.

This is the third in the Comfort Food Diet cookbook series and Taste of Home definitely delivers once again. The first two cookbooks Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook and Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Family Classic s Collection: Lose Weight with 416 More Great Recipes! were winners in our home from the very first recipe tried. There hasn't been a recipe in any of the books that we have tried that has been anything less than great. Almost every single recipe has a color photo and all recipes have complete nutritional information. This isn't fancy five star restaurant fare that's going to send you to every grocery store in a 100 mile radius looking for ingredients. Instead, these are good old down home favorites made healthy, using real ingredients that we all are familiar with and that are easily found in almost any grocery store. These days, with so many recipes available online, it's rare that a cookbook earns its way into my collection, but these three books are at the head of the class. As an added bonus (as if you needed one), these books come with an attached card inside the book for a free year of Taste of Home Healthy Cooking magazine, which normally retails for $23.94 and delivers the same great recipes that Taste of Home is always known for but healthier.

I will say I've only tried 3 recipes from this book, but most of the recipes included sound awesome. I can be picky when it comes to food, but I am willing to try most of these at least once. So far I have made the chili con carne, beef stew, and Mexican manicotti. My husband and I have enjoyed each one. I can't wait to try more over the coming weeks and months. I really like the recipes for 2. I don't usually like making large meals because they either go to waste or I end up eating too much the night I make them.

I enjoy cooking, but am usually disappointed that the recipes in "diet" cookbooks are too bland or full of artificial sweeteners. (In fact, the addition of the word "diet" in the title of this cookbook almost prevented me from getting it.)

The first part of the book is a nice overview of the importance of proper nutrition for health and weight loss (or maintenance). There is also a 6-week menu plan.

The best part of the book are the recipes and full-color pictures. The ingredient lists are generally small (10-12 items tops) and are things you will probably have in your pantry or fridge. The nutrition facts are clear (calorie counts are included next to the recipe name, as well) and include the details you would need to calculate WW Points+ or diabetic exchanges.

So far, we have tried (and enjoyed):

Blueberry-stuffed French toast (pg 92)

Potato egg bake (pg 98)

Curried chicken rice soup (pg 107)

Little kick jalapeno burgers (pg 136)

Southwest vegetarian bake (pg 148)

Gruyere Mashed potatoes (pg 197) -and seriously yummy

Frozen fruit cups (pg 237)

Scrambled egg muffins (pg 268)

I recommend this cookbook, as it has tasty recipes with a healthy (or "diet", if you insist) twist. Nothing I made from the cookbook tasted fake or low-calorie. And I appreciate the attention to healthy eating, rather than a get-skinny-quick mentality. Overall, highly recommended.

This cookbook was fantastic! I'm always looking for ways to eat better yet still have the food be tasty, but those recipes are hard to find. However, Taste of Home hit the mark with this cookbook. I've already tried several recipes and have loved every single one of them. My kids already have the book marked up and flagged recipes for me to try. I was impressed.

Advanced First Aid Afloat

Advanced First Aid AfloatI'm very happy to be the first reviewer of this, but a little suprised since it means there are a lot of sailors who don't know what's in this great book.

Levinson and Eastman (both physicians and active sailors) did a great job laying out serious medical problems in a way that even I can understand them. Also, they give readable scenarios that help put these accidents in context. A good example is the opening chapter, which goes into a story of a helmsman who wasn't paying close enough attention, and from an accidental jibe, suffered a head impact from the boom, leaving him out cold on the side deck.

Situations like that are real, and the authors have certainly laid out sound and solid advice for keeping your crew (and yourself) safe. The only reason I'm dinging a star from them is because I wish it could have been a bit bigger to cover even more.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that this book is written in a wonderfully dry sense of humor that can help take the shock out of traumatic situations. Dr Eastman's M.A.S.H. background shows through.

For example, his chapter on burns begins:

"Your trawler, 'Nomad', is rolling along in a heavy following sea, half way between Turtle Bay and Cabo San Lucas, at a comfortable 10 knots. It's 1200 , Tuesday: the galley slave lights off the fires for lunch.

"A maverick wave tosses 'Nomad' onto her beam ends. there is a scream below and the cook skyrockets up the companionway, hair and clothes ablaze.

"First, put out the fire. Don't get burned yourself. Roll him on the deck, wrap him in foul weather gear-anything that's handy.

"He sits on the cabin floor; he shivers with fright and pain, an awesome sight hair and eyebrows singed away; bits of burned clothing hanging on his chest and tummy. He smells like an overdone steak.

"1. Control pain and fright.

a. Cover all burned ares with cool towels, wrung out in fresh water if you have it).

b. Give him 100 mgms (2cc) of Demorol by I.M. injection (see Fig 7)."

... and so on.

I am not a doctor but both my sister and brother in law are and both are sailors. They say the advice is spot on and bang up to date.

I can't recommend the book too highly.

Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner's Guide: 33 Healing Herbs to Know, Grow, and Use

Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner's Guide: 33 Healing Herbs to Know, Grow, and UseI have to say something right up front. I am not a beginning herbalist. I have been studying and using herbs for years. And I am a teacher, helping others to learn how to incorporate herbs into their lives for health and well-being. Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner's Guide satisfies both the herbalist and the teacher in me. It is an excellent guide for learning about herbs, a treasure trove of practical recipes and ideas as well as a priceless gift of wisdom and insight from one of the leaders of the herbal movement in America.

There are a lot of herbals available, many of them written by Gladstar herself. Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner's Guide outshines any number of them on a number of levels. The book is beautifully done, a true feather in Storey Publishing's cap. The pictures are rich and vibrant and the material is presented in a clear and helpful way. There are four main sections. The first is a simple introduction to herbs and herbal medicine in which Gladstar's enthusiasm is immediately apparent. The second section, an introduction to making your own herbal remedies, provides step-by-step instructions for making the most basic and practical of herbal preparations, including teas, tinctures, and salves, among other things. In the third section Gladstar discusses nine herbs that most of us are familiar with, revealing uses for them that may not be so familiar at all. The fourth section presents twenty-four herbs that are safe and beneficial for most people to use regularly, but which readers may not find familiar.

As I read through the book, I was pleased to see many new recipes and ideas mixed in with some of Gladstar's tried and true recipes, such as her Fire Cider and Gypsy Cold Care Remedy. I had been afraid that perhaps the book would rest on the laurels of its predecessors. It does not. Gladstar's text is fresh and warm, making you feel as though you have a wise friend in the kitchen with you, urging you to try something new and take charge of your health in any way you are able. This warmth and wisdom is indeed a trademark of Gladstar's. She shows us the way back to the Wise Woman inside of all of us and encourages us to rediscover our ancestor's connection to the plants, honoring our own inner wisdom and ability to be healthy.

Years ago, I met Rosemary Gladstar at the Women's Herbal Conference that she founded, and which takes place every summer. After delivering her opening address, she stepped off the platform and waded through the people straight to where I stood, feeling like an alien in my Islamic hijab, in the midst of gauze skirts and tube tops. She embraced me, and welcomed me like an old friend. This book does the same thing. It envelops the reader in warmth and welcome, teaching her the way of herbs with wisdom, experience, and confidence.

Rosemary Gladstar's latest work is a great kindle book. It has a table of contents that is complete enough to help you get started, but it also has an index. Finding the exact herbal recipe you want is easy, and there are plenty to choose from. The book covers all the basics for a beginner. It has just about everything a home herbal medicine chest would need. The plants used are easy to obtain, common plants, not rare things from Asia or South America. Ms. Gladstar covers all the basic ways of applying herbs in health care such as tea, syrup, oil, salve, tincture, pills, baths, poultices, and compresses.

I have been using herbs to treat my family for 20 years, and wanted a reference to have on my kindle that would allow me to easily find things. This book fits that need nicely.

The minute I saw this book I had to pick it up. It was on one of my favorite subjects, herbalism. The book is about home-grown medicine and more specifically about herbal medicine. The book is beautifully illustrated with color pictures of each of the 33 herbs discussed, tips on how to grow the herb and it's medicinal uses.

She starts the book with a introduction to medicinal herbs, their benefits, starting a medicine garden and general introduction to the world of herbs. In chapter 2 she talks about how to make your own remedies. Herbs can be used in the forms of teas, syrups, oils, salves, tinctures, herbal pills, baths, poultices, and compresses. There is also information on the dosage and duration of herbal treatments.

She talks about herbal gardening in the ground and in pots, and makes a distinction between herbal tea for pleasure and herbal tea for medicine. Generally the medicinal herbs are steeped longer and have a stronger taste. Each of the 33 herbs has it's own beautifully illustrated section and recipes for that herb. For example, in the secation on Thyme there is Thyme Syrup, and Thyme Honey.

This book is very comprehensive and a superb begnners guide as well as a good source for more advanced students of herbalism. I plan to buy a copy of this book for my library. -Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas

I am new to the use of herbs and find that many of the more "encyclopedic" books tend to be heavy on the academics of herbs and less informative about the common sense aspects of herbal uses. I love that this book explains not just when to harvest the herbs, but why. It is perfect for those of use who are just starting our herbal garden and learning about a more natural way of healing. It is also informative enough that the more experienced herbalists will find this book useful.

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That WorksThis is the first book I read on intuitive eating. It really made a lot of sense to me. I researched intuitive eating online, looking at the relevent studies. There's not much research, yet, but the research does support intuitive eating. Just knowing that diets fail 95% of the time, on average, tells the story right there.

I jumped right into this eating approach with both feet about a month ago. When I started this diet I was a restrictive eater/binge eater. I was about 10-15 pounds overweight. I weighed myself one to four times a day. I never kept any food in the house that might truly make me want to eat a lof of it. Then, when I was out and had access to food that I craved, I would binge heartily. I'm extremely knowledgeable about nutrition, and only allowed myself to keep whole grains, no trans-fats, etc. in the house.

I really thought that I had a very healthy approach toward food. Then, I started intuitive eating a month ago. At first, it was stadium franks, hot dogs, chocolate, cream horns, turnovers, and a lot of them. I weighed myself recently, and found that I had only gained 3 pounds after eating this way to my heart's content. I stopped when I felt satisfied, and only ate when I felt hungry.

Just recently, do I feel the need for sugar/fat tapering. I'm starting to crave strawberries and cooked cabbage. I'm down to 2 cream horns a day, instead of 5. I don't even care to eat most of the other sugary food I keep around. I have to throw it out. My pants are starting to feel like they're loosening back up slowly.

I can't believe it. I'm 33. I've obsessed about my eating, dieted and binged (sometimes on a daily basis) for the past 18 years, only to weigh more than ever.

Now, to be surrounded by the food I always craved and binged on, and to not even want it is amazing!!!!

I can't support this concept enough.

Trust you body!!!! It knows what it's doing!

I really have to disagree with Yvonne's comment "But obese people do not start being overweight due to dieting!" As a child I always enjoyed eating, but I was not overweight. In fact, I didn't think too much about food at all. I went on my first diet at age 15, with the goal of losing 5 lbs. After I lost 5 lbs by eating a lot of salad and little else, I could fit into all my jeans and a few people commented on how good I looked. I was hooked.....I lost another 5 lbs. and looked great (probably too thin, but I thought I looked great!), but the constant restricting and hunger made me start to obsess about food! I would end a 2 day fast by eating an entire bag of cookies....My first diet was the beginning of a 20 year cycle of fasting and compulsive eating that left me 75 lbs overweight. I've been in lots of Compulsive Eating support groups over the years and I've heard the same story. If you put a child in a room filled with candy and junk food and tell her to eat whatever she wants, the food will quickly lose much of it's appeal......or tell her not to eat one bite and see how important that food becomes....

This book addresses many of the issues behind compulsive eating, and with lots of work on my part, it made me sane again (and 60 lbs lighter).

Imagine never having to worry about what you eat. Imagine being one of "those" people who can eat whatever they want whenever they want and never gain a pound -even lose weight! Don't you hate those people? What if you could be just like them? What if you knew their secret (that even they probably don't know)?

This book is the only "plan" you'll ever need to get off the dieting roller coaster and become a healthy eater. Skeptical? So was I. However, after a year of practicing Intuitive Eating, I am a COMPLETELY different person.

Be warned: it is not a quick fix. In fact, quick fixes are PRECISELY the reason we end up yo-yo dieting. Intuitive eating is not a diet at all. I know you've heard this before -even from actual "diets" like Weight Watchers -but, in fact, there is NO PLAN to intuitive eating. That's the whole point! You learn to eat what you want, what you need, and what feels good to your body. Your body already knows what's healthy for it and when you get rid of your emotional baggage about food, your shame, hidden eating, and all the other food behaviors you wish you could stop but feel enslaved to, you actually begin to enjoy food again!

Since I live in Southern California, I've had the privilege of consulting with Ms. Tribole (one of the authors) as a dietitian and nutritionist in my quest to overcome compulsive overeating. This book completely changed my life. I will be forever grateful to the authors.

Read Best Reviews of Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Here

I've read several comments that said that no one who reviewed this book mentioned that they had actually lost weight, and that therefore, this book is just giving overweight people permission to eat badly. So let me just clear that up right now. I read this book (an earlier edition) in 2000, and lost 40 pounds in the next 2 years. In the 4 years after that, I lost an additional 25. And...I've kept it off.

This book does give readers permission to eat what they want, but not to eat AS MUCH as they want. It teaches you to pay attention to your body, to your hunger and fullness signals, and to how certain foods make you feel. And once you've got that down, then it goes into nutrition.

My biggest problem was eating food just because it was there--and adding to that, the habit of ordering the largest size at restaurants. Once I learned to pay attention to what I was eating, and experimenting with smaller servings, the weight just dropped off. It may not work for everyone, but here is one woman who it did work for.

Let's face it, in this day and age it IS virtually impossible to eat 100% intuitively--we all have times when we eat for reasons other than hunger--many of us have jobs where we have set meal times, we are guests at other people's houses, etc. But even if you are able to learn to eat intuitively 50% of the time, it is an improvement.

So it goes without saying that I highly recommend this book. It's not conventional diet wisdom, but if that was what worked, we wouldn't have a multi-billion dollar weight loss industry, would we?

Want Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Discount?

About 5 years ago a friend tried to explain to me how she lost weight and had kept it off for so long. She told me that the only reason I overeat is because I restricted that food. I sort of understood what she was saying, but not really. She told me to practice listening to my body: what do i want to eat? am i full yet? etc.

Well, it took a few years of pondering her words, then I found this book, and finally it clicked!! WOW!! What a relief! I lost about 17 pounds two years ago and I have been the same weight since then. I eat WHATEVER I want to eat. There's not one food that is off-limits.

Here's the essence of the book: pick whatever your most favorite food is and allow yourself to eat however much you want. For me, it was Oreos. I could eat an entire package in one sitting. So, imagine that you go to the grocery store, you buy one dozen packages of Oreos. Everyday after today you receive another dozen packages of Oreos on your front step. Basically, you have a neverending supply of Oreos. How many are you actually going to eat? Maybe the first day you eat three packages. Guaranteed, by the end of the first week or two, if you are still eating them, you'll be eating only a couple Oreos at a time because you literally don't want to eat anymore.

Another food that was hard for me was french fries. Why do I eat all of my fries even when I'm stuffed? I realized it was because I knew in the back of my mind that I was going to try to avoid eating fries in the future, so I knew I better eat them all right now while I can!

If you tell yourself (and you have to really mean it, too) that you will go back and get more fries in an hour, or ten minutes, if you really want to, then you will never overeat! Why would you make yourself uncomfortable? If you are making yourself uncomfortable, you are doing it because you think you won't get to buy more of it later (either because of a self-imposed restriction or because you think you need to get your money's worth). It took lots of practice, but now anytime I go out to eat, I hardly have to remind myself that I will come back and buy more later if I want to. It's a true habit to not get uncomfortably full.

For those of you who feel like you need to get your money's worth in food, just remember this: if it goes in the trash, it's wasted and if it goes in your body, it's wasted. No matter what you do, it's wasted food. Your body doesn't need it or want it.

My relationship with food is now peaceful and calm. I no longer have any kind of anxiety about going out to dinner or going to a party where there's going to be food. I used to think about what I was going to eat for lunch for hours before lunch and think about dinner as soon as lunch was over. Now, when it's dinner time, I start thinking about dinner. My mind is at peace. And I have Oreos in my pantry :)

Cancer: Step Outside the Box

Cancer: Step Outside the BoxTy Bollinger taught me many things about cancer I didn't know. Coming from most people, this would be a mild compliment. Coming from me, it is somewhat more than that. You see, I have studied natural cancer treatments every day for the last eight years. I've written two books and 100 newsletters on the subject. I've given 25 workshops around the country on Beating Cancer-Gently. I "coach" about 10-12 people a week on the phone. They are people who have read one of my books. I coach them on the details of "what I would do if I were them."

Ty's research and writing are superb. He has collected all the data on the history of alternative cancer treatments and prepared this vital information for you in a very readable style. I will read this book a second time shortly to make sure I didn't miss anything. If you or a loved one have cancer, you MUST read this book. There is no other book which presents this subject in layman's language with the throughness of Ty's book.

Please do not let Ty's completely sincere expression of his religious beliefs turn you off. If you do not agree with it, please read the book anyway. There is no bias here, except against the corruption of Big Pharma and Big Medicine and the government agencies which support them.

What makes this book so superbly useful is that Ty gives you the complete explanation of the background of the treatment -who disovered it, exactly how it works, what type of cancer it should be used for -and then tells you how to order the substance or contact the clinic or medical professional who can administer it. Believe me, you cannot find this information in as complete and current a form anywhere else -not even in my own books.

Just buy it. You won't be sorry.

Bill Henderson

Author, "Cure Your Cancer" and "Cancer-Free"

This is a remarkably good book. I am pretty fussy about the books I read, and every now and again I find a gem. This is one of those gems. It is a book that will appeal to a wide range of readers, from a layperson with no medical knowledge through to trained medical doctors who want to further their knowledge of cancer. It is exceptionally well written by the author Mr Ly Bollinger who looks at the medical field as an outsider `looking in' because he is a CPA Accountant by profession. His motivation was driven by the loss of his parents and other family members from cancer over the prior 10 years. Bollinger explains his search for cancer solutions, and finds what many other researchers have found before him, that is, cancer in the USA is controlled by powerful vested interests whose aims and objectives are `at odds' with the author and his family. When Bollinger looked for innovative cancer solutions for his family, he was dismayed at how the American Medical Association (described by many as the trade union office of the medical profession) and the FDA, persecute any health professional with innovative solutions for cancer.

Most American people think and rightly so that if innovative cancer treatments are found, then their doctor would know about them, and use these treatments for their best health. Not true. Any doctor who uses a new approach for cancer will lose their license to practice medicine in the USA. Simply put, doctors are not authorized to try innovative cancer solutions (even for terminal patients who are told they have 3 months to live) as their job is to practice medicine as taught at medical school, and innovation is not part of their charter

The author of this book is a CPA and has a financial accounting background. This is ideal because the medical industry is really just big business, and to navigate the health sector requires a solid business and financial background, which the author has. The expression `follow the money trail' is very applicable to the medical field when you realize that the fortunes of many of our biggest companies are linked to the huge amount of money consumers spend on medical treatment. Author Ty Bollinger should be commended for writing this book. I genuinely feel for him as a person, someone from a deeply religious family background, who learned early in life that most people are fundamentally good and that our aim in life is to be fair and honorable. It is clear that the medical sector has let him down badly.

This book stands out because it is so compelling and enjoyable to read. It's easy to relate to this book, because the author shares his experiences with his parents in a very emotional way and make you feel as through the characters were your own parents and family. The book deserves five stars, because of its compelling insight into cancer treatment and the flaws in today's healthcare system.

Ty Bollinger's book is superior. He covered what you want to know about cancer and other important medical information. I'm telling my friends about this wonderful book. He takes out the fear of cancer and instructs people to learn and practice excellent health programs. This is the best health book I have ever had or read about. I read his book and went to the health store.

Revolutionary Medicine, 2nd (Illustrated Living History Series)

Revolutionary Medicine, 2ndRead this one on a full stomach. This stuff is real. This is how medicine was back during the days of our founding fathers. Truly you must admire the men who went to war to make our nation beginning, for this is what they got if they did not die in battle but were wounded.

More shocking is if you choose to read the book by this same author of the medicine of the Civil war period, you will see how little actually changed between the two wars.

great sketches of instruments, define many of the treatments and period beliefs. gives period names of common ailments and also explains how different sicknesses were confused, such as fevers or disentary.

I definitely would have rated this little book a lot higher if it weren't for the absolutely horrible print. It made me just about see double (my eyes aren't the best, but even so . . .) The drawings are great and the few descriptions I read interesting, informative, and, at times, humorous. The other books in this "history and Americana" series look interesting too, but I'll be darned if I'm going to spend money on something that is so frustrating to read.
