Wild Designs

Wild DesignsThis was my first experience reading anything author, Katie Fforde has written. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Laugh at loud funny and a real page turner. The main character, Althea is so likable you find yourself really cheering her on. I would have liked to have read about Patrick's life a bit more. I felt there were aspects of his character that could have been explored further, but it doesn't take away from the story at all. I'm definately going to read some more of this author's books.

Once again, Fforde comes through with a delightful, thoroughly modern English romance. The writing is light and happy feeling and the book will leave you with a smile.

Katie FForde is a charming writer, reminiscent of the style of Mary Wesley, Rosamunde Pilcher and Marjorie Sharp. A good book to curl up with on a rainy, winter afternoon.

I finished this book in a day. It was entertaining and amusing, not requiring a lot of deep thought. I thought Fforde did a fairly good job of character development even if the plot was a tad predictable

I liked the way the family was presented with all of its faults: the disagreements, the messiness, the lack of planned meals. This was very realistic. I also liked the way Althea met her financial problems head-on and made the best of things.

The only false note was the way Althea treated Patrick....there were too many times when she decided to let him go and pushed him out of her life.

But overall, this was an enjoyable way to spend a day of reading.

This author was recommended. I enjoyed WILD DESIGNS very much and I'm surprised at the wide range of opinions on it here at Amazon! But if you like reading romances that are well-written and whose characters are "real" you'll enjoy this one (Lavyrle Spencer fans, take note).

Fashions and Costumes from Godey's Lady's Book: Including 8 Plates in Full Color (Dover Fashion and

Fashions and Costumes from Godey's Lady's Book: Including 8 Plates in Full ColorThis is an excellent reference guide for Lady Civil War Reenactors who want to create beautiful day dresses and ball gowns. The book has detailed descriptions of each dress. A true Godey's dress was for the lady of wealth, however many women of average means subscribed to Godey's to get ideas for the dresses they wore. Each page will give you an idea of colors, styles and types of fabrics used. This book is a must along with "Who Wore What" for a true insight into women's fashions of the 1860's

This book is beautiful. It is a very helpful reference and it is just fun to look at. It was also great to have the description of each of the outfits. This book is much more detailed than the "80 Godey's Full-Color Fashion Plates (1838-1880)" by JoAnne Olian, but then I liked all the full -colored as well.

Great book for finding out what they really wore for dressy occasions during the Civil War Era and just prior. Afterwards they did not have the money or the material to do this, but it is lovely to see what they did before the war. Reenacter's who do not wish to spend a lot of money on a gown from the wrong era need to see what is correct before some dressmaker puts them into whatever pattern that SHE likes to make! RESEARCH is the key.

For those who already own Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898 (Dover Fashion and Costumes), you shouldn't fail to get this book to see what the ladies in its pages (or their mothers) were wearing in the early days (1837-69) of the Victorian era. Godey's was probably *the* pre-eminent "fashion book" of its day--it lasted almost till the turn of the century--and in this period it was helmed by its iconic female editor, Sarah Josepha Hale, who more or less single-handedly defined its form, focus, and look. Most of these outfits are for women, though there are a few children's costumes shown, and except for the last few pages, where the bustle begins to appear, they all show the basic bell shape of the time, with skirts gradually spreading farther and farther out. The reproduction is bright and sharp, and there's even a full-color section in the middle. (Godey's was, of course, noted for its hand-painted color plates, which often found their way into the tents and winter cabins of Civil War soldiers longing for their loved ones at home.) Every picture includes the magazine's original description. If you have any occasion to search for large, clear pictures of Victorian fashion, this is a book you need to have on your shelf.

2013 Writer's Market

2013 Writer's MarketThe 2013 version of the Writer's Market is one of the worst ever published. From format to content, this version is a disappointment. Let's start with the type. The new version uses two-column pages, needing an extremely small font to fit all the text. The titles of the publishers and magazines are in light gray type, making it difficult to see where one market ends and another begins. The organization of the content is ridiculous. A writer consults this book for specific information, which should be easily accessible. Instead, for some reason, the publishers decided that the more information they could fit in a column, the better. One has to read through lines and lines of "filler" to get at the important info. Some of the markets have an entire column of description--which could easily have been reduced without any loss of significant information.

Why can't the publishers of this book ever get it right? Would it be so difficult to have a uniform format for each entry with only the basic information writers need? Of course, any individual market would love to have as much publicity as can fit on a page, and WM obliges with column-long blurbs. But this book is essentially a reference book, and who wants to read through miles of tiny print to find essential information? Drop the two-column format, shorten the entries with a word limit, make the content for each market more uniform, and darken the type for market names. And it wouldn't hurt to ask for feedback from writers who actually need to use this book. Conduct a survey or focus group. Just do something.

I bought the Kindle edition of this book, and appreciate the insight it gives me into different markets. However, I found that the coverage of some markets is very thin. For example, the Consumer Magazines/Photography section of the book lists only two photography magazines, and only one of the publications listed is considered mainstream. There are dozens of photography magazines that are not listed including such mainstays as Popular Photography, American Photo, and Shutterbug to name just three.

So I recommend starting with this book. Then go to a local newsstand to see what other magazines are being published that in your target market.

I've used previous versions of this book for years, and have found the book to be extremely helpful. I expect that the new version will be equally helpful.

One of the most popular sections of the Writer's Market for independent writers is "How Much Should I Charge?" But the 2013 edition has an error under the following section:

Advertising & Public Relations Press kits

Under the "Other" portion of the table," the prices are, respectively:

High $850/60sec

Low $120/60sec

Avg $456/60sec

It looks like the information was picked up from the costs several lines down for Radio commercials!

Everyone who purchased this book should get a revised section from the publishers! And I'm contacting Amazon.com to arrange for a return.

PS/One of the problems when data is missing, or incorrect, you wonder what else might be missing or in error. Upon returning the 2013 edition, I reordered an older edition from Amazon which is complete.

I preferred the format of the Writer's Market a few years ago, it was easier to read and easier to find what you needed. There were less markets listed in this edition and the format was more difficult to read, things seemed "jammed" together.

It used to be a better, more helpful book...but as a free lance writer, I still have to buy it since it's still the best source for information...wish it was as good as it used to be.

Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, But

Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, Buttermilk, Cream, Coconut Milk, or Any Other Animal or Plant MilkOnce again, Anne Watson creates a wonderful, straight forward approach to what has long been considered a complicated method. This book is the MUST have for anyone wanting to make milk soaps and is light years beyond Casey Makela's book on the same subject. I recommend this book for two major reasons:

1) Watson discusses both liquid milk (what she calls the "cool technique") and powdered milk (the "warm technique") and offers excellent recipes and directions for both. Her method is very relaxed and while it is admittedly a hair more complex than regular CP soap, it's not nearly as complicated as some other books make it sound.

2) Watson dispels the myths of milk soapmaking. This is HUGE. She goes through all of the myths about using milk from what type of milk you need to who can do it.

Also, Watson is accessible through her website. I sent her a question not long ago and she responded to me within two days! How's that for asking the author? :)

Making unique, specialized, and personalized soaps is both a craft and an art. Written and compiled by Anne L. Watson, "Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, Buttermilk, Cream, Coconut Milk, or Any Other Animal or Plant Milk" is a collection of thoroughly 'user friendly' recipes and instructions for making 'milk soaps' and begins with an introduction to the subject, what it is, the equipment required to make it, and choosing between the two principle methods for making milk soaps, along with step-by-step instructions that cover everything from preparation to cleanup. The recipes for specialized milk soaps range from Yogurt Parfait Soap, to Cinnamon Oatmeal Soap, to Marge's Chocolate Silk Soap, to Ruth's Butter Soap, and more! "Milk Soapmaking" also covers such relevant issues as making soap with plant milks, shaping milk soaps, controlling color, and a roster of frequently asked questions about milk soaps. Enhanced with a list of internet resources and an index, "Milk Soapmaking" is enthusiastically recommended for anyone wanting to try their hand as making milk soaps for themselves either as a hobby or as a profession.

Anne Watson's first book made me brave enough to attempt regular cold process soapmaking. While I now feel fairly proficient with that, milk soapmaking was intimidating. Just like with her first book, she explains things in very understandable terms, troubleshoots possible problems before you encounter them and dispels all those mysterious myths about making soap with milk. I really like using the frozen milk with the lye as there are almost no fumes and not so much fuss with the temperatures like in regular soapmaking. My attempts have resulted in lovely bars of milk soap. If I can do this, you can do this.

I started making soap with Anne's Smart Soapmaking. After becoming comfortable with the basic process of soapmaking, I decided I wanted to expand my horizons and learn about milk soaps. This book does not disappoint. It's written in the same easy to follow manner as her first book...non-intimidating, very clear, very simple.

Since I've started soapmaking, I've purchased books from other authors and I must say that if I would have started with those books, I probably would not have made a batch of soap at all, as a few that I have just don't seem to have the easy to follow instructions like this book has.

Just a note, you don't have to start with Smart Soapmaking. This book is geared toward the beginner just as the other book is. So if you've never made soap before and you're more interested in milk soaps, then this book will have you making beautiful milk soaps in no time at all.

The Skin Type Solution

The Skin Type SolutionI purchased this book after reading a review about it in a magazine, and I'm extremely pleased with it!

Before buying the book, I was worried that the questionnaire that Dr. Baumann provides wouldn't be as easy as it was to follow since, in the past, I've often found that questionnaires sometimes don't reveal your categories as clearly as they could. In this case, however, her questionnaire was simple and accurate, and I learned a great deal about my skin.

What I also like is that Dr. Baumann provides you with information in case you fall into a borderline area in one of the four categories. For instance, I fall between the Wrinkled and Tight skintypes in one category, but the book suggested that if this is the case, that I follow the Wrinked guidelines to prevent the formation of future wrinkles. She offers similar suggestions throughout, so that you know when and how to use the products she recommends.

I also like how Dr. Baumann provides products in a variety of price ranges, many of which can be found at a local drugstore. The only downside is that some of the prices were a bit more expensive than her price rating system seems to suggest. For example, each of the products is rated from $-$$$ in terms of its cost. Two of my recommended eye creams were in the $$ price range, when one, in fact, costs $55 and the other $68. It seems like these should have been placed in the $$$ range, and these aren't the only examples of this nature.

Overall, though, it's been an excellent purchase! Considering how much many of us spend on beauty and facial products, the book is a very good investment. Personally, I know that it will help me avoid making costly mistakes in the future. Instead of continuing to spend money on products that don't work for my skin type, I now feel like I will be a more confident shopper.

In my teens and twenties I never paid much attention to my skin, partly because I didn't have any major problems and partly because I wasn't very interested in beauty, fashion magazines and the like. I'd wash my face in the shower and draw a couple lines under my eyes in the morning and that was the extent of my skin care and make-up routine. But, at 34 I noticed a lesion on my face that turned out to be skin cancer. It was nothing serious and was taken care very easily, but it made me start looking at my skin more closely, and, much to my dismay, I realized that I was beginning to show the signs of ageing; for the first time I noticed that I had crowsfeet, smile lines and age spots. I decided I probably should start taking a little better care of my skin, but I didn't really know "what" I should be doing. Since it's nearly impossible to get a dermatologist to spend any serious time with you, I decided to buy a book instead. I bought this one and I think it was a good choice.

The book helps you assess the type of skin you have and determine what products and procedures are best for you. It also impresses upon you the importance of sunscreen. For many skin types, like mine, Dr. Baumann suggests a Retinoid product that you have to get through a dermatologist. This seems to have been good advice as I have read several articles in other sources (NYTimes and Consumer Reports) that say that Retinoids are the ony products which have been scientifically proven to reduce the signs of ageing. So, for the recommendation of suncreen and retinoids, I'm very thankful to the author.

As far as some of the other product recommendations are concerned, I have taken them with a grain of salt. If I choose to use them, I buy the cheapest ones or look for another product that has the same active ingredient. Is she endorsing certain products for financial gain? Possibly. But, she does give you enough information so that you can seek out cheaper alternatives. One thing is for sure, this book did not save me any money. A tube of Avene (the Retinoid) alone is costing me $50/month and if you buy all the other "stuff" (special cleansers, eye cream, antioxidant moisterizers, etc.) you could "easily" find yourself spending over a $100/month on your face.

The author is also a big proponent of Botox. She herself has been using Botox since she was 29. I personally perfer to stay away from needles and injections. Not only is it extremely costly and something that you need to do on a regular basis, but for me it seems like it's taking the anti-ageing program a bit too far. We all are going to age, so a certain amount of acceptance (resignation?) seems in order. I want to keep my skin in the best condition possible, but I also want to be able to accept my ageing body and face (with it's smile lines and crows feet). While I can "totally" sympathize with women (and men) who have these procedures, it is my hope that I can acquire a healthy attitude about ageing and spend all the money I would have invested in Botox on something more fulfulling, like wonderful vacations. But, perhaps this is easy to say while I'm still in my thirties. Maybe I'll feel differently in my sixties.

At any rate, I think this is a very informative book and it has helped me make some well-informed, positive changes that hopefully are paying off.

I have had problem skin my entire life acne, sensitivity. I have been sold every product under the sun wuth a promise it would help and never did. I finally took Accutane which cleared up my skin but made it even more confusing to buy products. I finally have the answer.

I read the book and took the quiz only to find out not only do I have sensitive skin but I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin. I threw out more than half my skin care products and bought several on Dr. Baumann's recommended list for my skin (dry, sensitive, wrinkled, non-pigmented). My skin has never been this clear no spots, no itchiness, no flaking, nothing but clear soft skin. I even feel comfortable going without makeup now. Even after the Accutane my nose still had a lot of clogged pores and even they seem to be clearing up now.

Despite what others have said Dr. Baumann is very upfront that she tests for several companies in fact she tests for so many that she is truly impartial many of the products she would test would be from competing companies. Common sense tells you this. I also liked the dietary recommendations for my skin type I have incorporated a few and have seen a difference.

This book is a must have for anyone it demystifies the skin care industry and helps you figure out what to use and what not to use. It gives options and information you cna use for a lifetime.

Buying beauty products no longer has to be a guessing game-where you try to sort through the hype and figure out what will work for you. In this book, Dr. Baumann takes all the guess work out of it. First she helps you evaluate and understand your skin's uniqueness. Then she shows exactly what products you need (and don't need to use) in day and night regimens customized to each skin type. Plus her advice is clear, credible and covers all the bases because she is not peddling her own skin care line, but has taken the time to evaluate and rate all the skin care products available.

Baumann is a true scientist, and I've never seen as comprehensive a skin care book as this one. And it's so valuable to finally know how to pick the right products and avoid the ones that will sit unused cluttering up my shelves.

I am only 23 years old, but I have had problem skin since pubertyredness, acne, large pores, hyperpigmentation from acnes, etc . I have tried all the new products gone to aestheticians, and nothing ever helped. I received this book as a birthday present and have been following Dr. Baumann's plan for OSPWs. Wow, what a difference. I am finally able to leave the house without makeup. The book was easy to navigate and despite what some have said does address falling in between categories. That's why you use number values to determine what category you are in. Anyways, I found this book invaluable and would highly reccommend it to anyone that feels hopeless about their skin.

Kelee Meditation: Free your Mind

Kelee Meditation: Free your MindI have been practicing the Kelee meditation for a few years and have found it to be the most effective, efficient and user friendly form of meditation. I first came to meditation via the mindfulness route when looking for ways to deal with migraines. However, what I have found with the Kelee method is that it is the succinct form of meditation in which one learns to do the opposite of mindfulness, and not think. Rather relax into a state without thoughts for a shorter period of time, but consistently and the results are forthcoming as one's practice progresses. By utilizing the three P"s: practice, patience, and persistance I have experienced improvement with my migraines and beyond that a calmer, clearer perspective of life itself. Ten minutes twice a day is doable and sustainable while other more lengthy forms of mediation may be beneficial, they generally are not able to be maintained for the long haul and actually miss the point of getting out of one's head and thoughts entirely. Kelee meditation is simple, successful, serene.

Like any great teacher, everything Ron teaches leads you inwardly, so you can see for yourself, not only what you are looking for, but what may be blocking you. His clarity on the subject of the mind and meditation means he doesn't waste any words in his books. I think there is enough confusion on the subject of the mind and spirituality and it's great to learn from someone that knows. If you want to learn about your mind and a simple meditation technique that works, this is a great way to start. Natural Beauty: Pamper Yourself with Salon Secrets at Home

Natural Beauty: Pamper Yourself with Salon Secrets at HomeThis book could be good for a model wanna-be. It does have a chapter on shaping your eyebrows and waxing your legs ouch! However, if you want useful recipes and remedies do not buy this book! The author's idea of a recipe for Foot-Soaking Fizzies is Alka Seltzer and your favorite essential oil. Her recipe for Aromatherapy Bath Salts is epsom salt, your favorite essential oil and food coloring! This book lacks useful information and only has a few recipes other than those listed on the back cover. Most ingredients are not natural and most of her "secrets" would irritate my sensitive skin.

The author, a model turned aesthetician, shares her knowledge about natural body care. She tells how to care for your skin, eyes, and hair and gives recipes for creams, shampoos, conditioners, etc. that have natural and few ingredients, are easy to make at home, and are inexpensive. She also includes a wonderful section about buying cosmetics in stores, how salespeople trick you into buying more than you want and need, and how you can avoid those pitfalls.

Unlike other books that are loaded with recipes and leave you undecided what's best for you, du Priest suggests one or two for each skin and hair type and tells you why they will work for you. For people who may not believe that such simple and inexpensive lotions will work, she points out that her sugar-oil scrub for aging skin, which you can make at home in 1 minute from ingredients in your kitchen, has the same composition as a $15 beautifully packaged mini-tube sold in beauty stores.

Other beauty books require you to buy dozens of basic ingredients before you can start your home cosmetics, duPriest's doesn't. Her ingredients can easily be found in supermarkets.

I liked the author's straightforward way and throughout the book I always felt she was honest

I borrowed this from my library to see if it was something worth reading. The things she talks about in here is very basic, real and down to Earth. I love that I can go into my kitchen and make just about anything "spa" with the ingredients in there! I don't have to go to the health food store and buy things I wouldn't normally use like glycerin.

She also talks about -waxing-how to do it at home and make your own wax; -clothing, what works and doesn't

-shopping for things, especially cosmetics

-different tricks played on you by salons

-how a positive attitude makes you shine on the outside

-is expensive make-up better than cheap?

-how to properly shape lips and eyebrows

-hair care

-how to massage

-etc.

A basic cleanser for your face (all skin types): 1t yogurt, 1/2t honey. Mix and massage onto face. Rinse with warm water.

I liked the book so much that I decided to buy my own book so I can highlight in it the different things I want to use.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book)

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised EditionI had a much older edition of this book when I was pregnant with my first child almost 10 years ago and I read it and countless other pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting books. I passed along the older version to a pregnant friend after the birth of my youngest in 2002; I thought I knew all I needed to know after successfully breastfeeding my first and continuing to breastfeed my youngest. Some recent problems led me to borrow the new 7th Revised Edition from a LLL meeting and I wish I had a newer edition before my second son was born. I learned so much about recent scientific discoveries about breastfeeding and the healthful properties of human milk. I could have avoided alot of heartbreak and anxiety in the hospital if I'd known all this and read it prior to his birth. The hospital was not very friendly to breastfeeding and if I had not already had the positive experience with my first son, I probably would have let them convince me of the need for bottles. As it was, we had a very difficult time in the first few weeks, which could have been avoided with the knowledge and information contained in this book. I urge you to read it, especially if you are considering nursing. And even if you plan to feed your baby formula, it may change your mind! And bring it with you to the hospital to use as a resource and to back up your requests to nurses to NOT give your baby sugar water, formula or a pacifier. The scientific information and references provided should give you all the support you need.

I breastfed all three of my children well into toddlerhood and was very active in LLL for several years. This book does have helpful information, but if you don't completely subscribe to LLL's basic philosophy (breastfeeding on demand until the child chooses to wean, having no scheduled separations from the child because then you might not be available for nursing at the exact moment the child wanted to, a very limited role for fathers, etc.), the book will seem judgmental. In addition, the book often does not seem sympathetic to mothers who face what seem like overwhelming problems. Their assurances that you can work things out no matter what can be guilt inducing rather than helpful. Actually talking to LLL leaders can be great--I've gotten some wonderful help from some. On the other hand, I've know others who were either not knowlegable enough to be helpful, gave too much information, or who were jugmental and unsupportive of mothers who made choices they didn't like (such as working outside the home). One cannot be an LLL leader if one has had scheduled separations from baby (like working), so many leaders have strong feelings about how you should parent, and their personal feelings can get inthe way of being helpful to moms who work, want to wean, have to go on a trip without the baby, etc. In the book itself, I also find that the use of "he" to refer to all children is annoying--they say it's for clarity because the mom is always "she," but in the chapter on dads, they still refer to babies as he, and somehow the references are still clear. LLL has a tendency to put women in the secondary position of fulfilling their womanliness solely by serving the needs of others. I think The Nursing Mother's Companion is a better book for the nursing mom. It's helpful and practical, and while the author is very pro-breastfeeding, you don't feel like there's a hidden agenda lurking beneath the advice. The non-breastfeeding oriented decisions you make about how to run your life and family don't really enter into the discussion, while in LLL's book, these other issues are front and center. If you don't want a whole life philosophy along with breastfeeding advice, The Nursing Mother's Companion is a better book.

I've read the reviews on this book and La Leche League stating that somehow, La Leche Leage (LLL)and this book can make one feel inadequate or less womanly if problems with breastfeeding lead to supplementing with formula. My experience has found this to be very untrue.

I attended my first LLL meeting while I was pregnant with my first child. I found the people to be very friendly and they went out of their way to answer all of my questions about becoming a new mom and breastfeeding. I contuniued these meetings for the wonderful support and education throughout my pregnancy. I also hired a Lactation Consultant to help with breastfeeding once the baby was born.

Unfortunatly,I ended up with a c-section. I was unable to see my daughter for almost 4 hours after the surgery. When I did finally meet her, she was very drowsy from the epidural and would not latch for over 24 hours. My daughter was born on a Friday night, and the hospital's Lactation Consultant was "off" for the weekend!!! It was the wonderful women I met at the LLL meetings that I called for help. They were so helpful and did not judge me for having difficulty. Also, the book was VERY helpful in answering all of the MANY questions that arose once my child was brought to me. I especially loved the chapter that addresses concerns about breastfeeding after a c-section. Many of the nurses and, suprisingly, the physicians, suggested over and over that I supplement with formula, when really all I needed was a breastpump!!! I had to request a breastpump 3 times before it was brought to me. Without the support of the LLL and the book, I would have gone along with the nurses and Doctors and my daughter & I would have missed out on all the benefits of breastfeeding.

In short, I have not found this book or LLL to be judgmental of mothers who have difficulty with breastfeeding and end up supplementing with formula, rather, what I have found is just pure frustration that mothers are robbed of the opportunity to experience all the benefits of breastfeeding by being pushed into supplementing at the fist sign of any difficulty. My experience has taught me that breastfeeding is an art and it is not always easy to master it, especially when you are mentally and physically exhausted from having a baby. LLL was there to SUPPORT me and my family in that time by providing education and assistance. Thanks to them I knew how important it was to get my baby the colostrum I was producing the first few days after she was born and I knew not to panic when there was very little of it coming out. So many of the moms I know are convinced to supplement or give up breastfeeding altogether because they are told or mistakenly think the don't have "enough milk" during this stage!!! I was so relieved that I was wiser due to the information I received from LLL and the book.

The first couple of weeks of breastfeeding were difficult, but with the help of my Lactation Consultant, LLL friends, and this book, my now 5 month old daughter is 100% breastfed and VERY happy, healthy and bonded to me (as I am to her!).

I can't say enough good things about this book and LLL. They helped me to become a caring, nurturing and confident mom! Also, there's a 1-800 number in the book that any mom can call and they will walk you through ANY breastfeeding problem!

This wonderful, factful book got me through the wee hours of the night when I thought nothing was going right. It gave truthful information rather than the fad stuff one hears from friends and Moms. The book helped making this part of child rearing a true joy. I am now giving a copy to my daughter to help her prepare for the care of my first grandchild.
