Wake Up! You're Probably Never Going to Look Like That: How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly

Wake Up! You're Probably Never Going to Look Like That: How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly Fit SECOND EDITIONFaced with the task (challenge) of losing 30 pounds, I turned to my trustworthy Google to look for a good approach to take. After several discoveries of "quick weight loss" spams I finally found some comfort in Michelle Pearl's book, Wake Up! You're Never Going to Look Like That: How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly Fit.

Two discoveries were especially comforting. First that quick weight loss promises are a scam because the only sure way to shed pounds and keep them off is slow and steady. Another comforting discovery is that there is no one-size fits-all approach to weight loss but that success is best achieved by tailoring workouts and eating habits to your body, lifestyle and environment. Now that makes sense to me!

Pearl stresses that the person who makes lifestyle changes slowly over time and understands that weight loss won't be easy will drop pounds and keep them off. The important thing, Pearl adds, is to have realistic expectations and in the end be happy with what you achieve and with the new imperfect you.

The author, who herself lost 100 pounds and kept it off, is a certified group fitness instructor who operates an online subscription exercise service at . Besides telling her own story in Wake Up, Pearl tells the stories of seven Imperfectly Fit Superstars who each reveal how they lost weight. Each had a different method, one or parts of which might work for me.

An important discussion in Wake Up that I found especially revealing was how important nutrition and healthy foods are to any weight loss effort. I just can't get into counting calories (which I don't understand anyhow) or reading package labels to figure out the significance of this percentage or that percentage of vitamin A, C, D or something. Alphabet soup is better eaten than pondered.

Pearl eats the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day. That way she doesn't have to make different decisions each day or count calories or configure proteins and vitamin balances into her diet. She fixes a different evening meal each day so her family is not dragged into her personal eating regiment. Now that makes a lot of sense to me and was very helpful.

I never cared for the Biggest Loser so was not impacted one way or another by her criticism of the show or Jillian Michaels, except to cheer her on when criticizing the show for exploiting obese people. That is certainly the case. I must confess, though, getting some satisfaction form visiting Pearl's blog, .

The fact that you read this far in the review suggests you very likely have a weight problem, or have a friend with a weight problem. If so, you too might benefit from reading this wonderful book.

By Emory Daniels

I absolutely adore Michelle Pearl and her youtube videos. I got the n**k version (not sure if it will be blocked so that's why i blocked out the competetors name) because it was free on a lender program.

The diet is basically low sugar, whole foods, low-carb dinners with her husband. She does explain a phenominon I've never heard of but experienced myself in my journey: you're constantly hungry and constantly cold. I believe with a little more work and cutting out the cheesy clip arts and reworking the "diet fairy tale" section it could go from ok to good.

All the information is available on her blog and videos. The book only gives a smidgen more details. It's more her story of losing 200 lbs and the tips she learned along the way. All in all a good read bit not something I'd buy for my bookshelf

I happened across Michelle Pearl's weight management guide after a week of chocolate chip muffins for morning tea. You could say her easy-to-read book was just the timely motivation I needed.

Reading Pearl's `Wake Up! You're Probably Never Going to Look Like That' is like having a non-judgmental conversation with a friend. Pearl writes from personal experience, and for anybody who has travelled the weight struggle path, her voice is credible and believable.

There is no guilt stick waving here; instead this book offers a message of self-care and acceptance. What is to be aimed for is weight loss for health and well-being, achieved through a combination of five factors:

* An understanding of the underlying physiological factors influencing weight

* The emotional aspects

* The influence of environmental factors, including avoiding temptation and the importance of support from friends and family

* Healthy, lower-cal, lower-fat eating and

* Exercise

A former journalist and writer, Pearl supports her thesis with jargon-free scientific evidence, diagrams, pictures, short chapters and sub-headings. It is easy to dip into this book at relevant sections, as well as to read and absorb it quickly. Although a lot of the information she provides is not necessarily new, to have it in such an accessible form is an advantage. And, although many of her tips are probably common sense, they serve as good reminders when you're considering less-healthy alternatives to snack on. I particularly found motivating the statistics on what serious health issues are influenced by weight, the idea that sustainable weight management comes not from special diets or programs, but portion control of everyday food choices and substitution of lower-fat/sugar/salt varieties and the necessity of exercise to achieve a weight-loss calorie deficit.

I downloaded this title as a freebie from another site, but I believe it would be well worth considering for purchase. Download a sample for yourself and see if it could be of benefit to you. Hey, I've been three mornings muffin-free since reading! Maybe this title might help you ditch your food weaknesses too! :-)

WOWtalk about a anti-be perfect book! This book is like sitting down and dishing with your girlfriend you haven't seen in 3 years! Michelle is honest and blunt. She freely admits genetics are going to keep ALOT of us from EVER looking like a Playboy/Victoria's Secrets model! The key to her is understanding this and then determining WHERE you can get to where you are healthy AND happy. So you don't get below say a size 10, if you are fit, ACCEPT it and deal with it! She debunks all the get slim-quick diets and exercise plans in honest, behind the scenes, advice. Her book contains the kernel of truth that ALL girls need to learn at an early age, so they will not make themselves ill/die trying to achieve something they can never be!

Michelle lays out a VERY simple diet and exercise plan that ANYONE can follow, including healthier choices at fast food restaurants (cause sometimes you HAVE to eat out!). Her success stories are honest and share one themethe choice to MOVE more and change their lives. I can understand Michelle's loathing of the Biggest Loser show as being unrealistic based on her OWN experience (hello, HOW many people go thru that big of a weight loss TWICE?) With some of Jillian Michael's latest comments REALLY makes you wonder about what is being said to the contestants OFF-camera! Michelle would be the trainer I would want in my corner helping me!

This is a good book for getting your head right. The author has a great sense of humor. This is the first book I've read that addresses the fact that many of us veterans of the diet wars feel like we are constantly starving. What a relief. Because of this book, I changed my weight goal to something more doable, and changed my calorie settings on my tracker to give me more time to do it. My favorite part of the book is her diet fairy tales.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis and who wants to end the pain using a lifestyle approach. The good doctor has given a multifaceted and holistic program that teaches readers how to change lifestyle habits to decrease pain and become more active. The chapter on the PAIN-FREE ARTHRITIS DIET was extremely beneficial to me, as I have rheumatoid arthritis. I was not aware of the food/inflammation/arthritis connection, so this report is cutting edge compared to other books in print.

If you want to stop pain without relying on medications that can cause harmful side effects, then read this book. I guarantee it will change your life and pain--as it has mine.

The writers point out at the very beginning that seventy million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis with the number expected to balloon as the baby boomers become senior citizens. As such this reference book should be of interest to many readers as Dr. Harris H. McIlwain and Debra Fulghum Bruce provide an easy to follow summary of the various treatments available today. The authors furbish information that runs the gamut from exercise, diet, drugs and alternative therapies such as chiropractic and acupuncture. They include a detailed step by step approach to overcome or at least deal with the pain of arthritis so that the sufferer can maximize a positive lifestyle. Those seven steps are immediately provided in the introduction with detail in later chapters. The book enables the reader to understand the options and choose what is best of them. Thus PAIN-FREE ARTHRITUS: A 7-STEP PROGRAM FOR FEELING BETTER AGAIN is solid reading for those inflicted with this crippler and their families, but must reading for those who currently spell relief: none.

Uninformed Consent : The Hidden Dangers in Dental Care

Uninformed Consent : The Hidden Dangers in Dental CareA great book written by two very intelligent and "open minded" doctors. Dr. Thomas Levy's story lead me to taking a more pro-active position with my dental revision. I already knew about the devastating effects of my "silver fillings" and I had some knowledge about root canals. However, his story took me to the next level of action...removal of my two root canals. And yes, just like Dr. Huggins and Dr. Levy mention in the book, they were infected and a source of slow and constant poisoning of my body. I owe the a debt of graditute for their courage to speak out about yet another atrosity in dentistry.

They also go into detail about many other sources of mercury...eye contact lens solution, contraceptives, vaccines, seafood, etc.

If you want to know why we are getting sicker and sicker in this country, then you need to read this book.

This book focuses in more detail on the issue of dental induced toxicity. The book is well written and an absolute must for anyone suffering from any vague, unresponsive illness. This book also sends shock-waves through the standard medical dogma of what constitutes "incurables," in that case after case of serious medical diseases were reversed after removing mercury amalgams from patient's mouths. The book is co-written by a physician, who's own health benefits were revealed after he underwent dental detox. His account will amaze the nay-sayers and awaken the nearly dead from mercury toxicity. I am a suffering, long-term toxic reader, and I saw myself in every painful agonizing detail of mercury's wretched effect on once healthy tissue. I have undergone surgery because of its twisted devastating blows, and am certain the grim reaper was riding mercury's coattails. Even if you don't believe that you're being bombarded with deadly poison while reclining in the dentist's chair, read the book. You may save the life of someone you love, maybe even yourself.

Buy Uninformed Consent : The Hidden Dangers in Dental Care Now

Something I did not know (and which the authors expose) is that dentists as a professsion have the highest suicide rate. It is because, they argue convincingly, dentists spend decades dealing with mercury, a deadly neuro-toxin, which collects in their brains. Although they don't comment on it, this is where the old expression, "Mad as a hatter" came from: in the past hatters became insane because they used mercury in their job. The average dental amalgam is 50% mercury: this is the poison the ADA claims is safe and allows dentists to place inches from peoples' brains? Europe is far ahead of us in this regard; mercury fillings are now illegal. The list of diseases improved or cured by removal of fillings is astonishing. The authors list case after case. Schopenhauer made the comment that ideas are first ridiculed, then violently opposed, then accepted as self-evident. I wonder how many years it will take before the dangers of these fillings will be accepted as self-evident.

Dr. Huggins graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry in 1962 and received a master of science degree from the University of Colorado in 1989. He is no quack, he is a crusader for health.

There is abundant scientific evidence that amalgam fillings are a danger to health. Dental amalgam is 50% mercury. Mercury is the most toxic metal known to man. Just look at the information from The International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology at .

Also consider that the Swedish Dental Material Commission recommended that amalgam be banned in 2002 download the report from . They commented that "The use of amalgam has been identified as the single largest source of mercury in sewage sludge, and crematoria are a large source of emissions to air in Sweden.". So how the hell does mercury get into people's faeces without passing through the body first ?

Dentists who deny that amalgam is harmful are either ignoramuses or liars it's really that simple. They lie because they do not want to get served with class action lawsuits from all the people made sick from their amalgam fillings. That's the same reason why the governments stand by the dentists (Sweden excepted).

This is written particularly in response to Kavity Killer's party-line review of this book:

I have been directly involved in clinical dentistry for over 40 years. Quackwatch is full of beans on this matter, as they are on many other issues as well. They are backed by the AMA and ADA, etc, so know that there are a lot of god-like egos on the line here. Many mistakes have been made by AMA/ADA members and to be exposed would be a huge loss of face, not to mention the astronomical costs of potential litigation and case settlements. They do NOT want to go there! Sadly, our cultural worship of material success has led to a level of greed that trumps the oath to "First do no harm." It didn't just happen over-night. The AMA/ADA has been in bed with the Pharmeceutical industry for at least 50 years. The trickle-down effect this had on individual doctors and dentists was slower in developing, but has seriously infiltrated the general ranks in medical and dental schools, and private practices over the past 20-25 years. Many health professionals DO continue to fight this trend, but Pharma has enormous financial resources [ie, power] and the greed-based commercialization of US Healthcare is the result we all suffer. The problems are insidious as in many instances, Pharma susidizes entire hospitals, medical schools, and research programs, as well as many of the doctors who write medical textbooks. Consequently, their own products and protocols become the de facto treatments that all health professionals learn before they ever even see their first patients! Not to mention Pharma's infiltration into the FDA, with the subsequent "fast-tracking" of questionable drugs into the marketplace and into our bodies. I could go on and on with my insider's view of this but I am getting off-track on the subject of this book. So, moving on...

Please. Read this book if you want to get a more realistic idea of what all the brain-washed dentists and doctors DON'T want you to know. Also, understand that most of them are basically good people, but facing the real mistakes they have made as a result of their commercial indoctrination is overwhelming... emotionally, it is a very bitter pill to swallow. There is a strong element of betrayal and shame in this situation, and doctors and dentists are not going to be quick in accepting responsibility for the harm they've done when they realize that their own lack of due diligence [and disinterest] has made them culpable...and not merely victims or pawns of the "machine."

I have seen all of this up close and personal with numerous dentists. Dentists/doctors have also become accustomed--obviously--to a certain lifestyle as well as the respect their professions have brought them. Tie that in with the pressure of their spouses and children, who expect that privileged lifestyle to continue. Their identities have become completely entwined with their public images within their communities and with their peers. They [can] feel quite fearful and threatened by exposes such as this book and then do nothing except try to push it all under the rug. Of course, at this point the shame only increases because NOW they are knowingly doing treatments that cause harm! They [can] become defensive and even belligerent in continuing to do root canals or prescribing toxic fluoride, all in an impotent effort to PRETEND it isn't so! This is not to say that every dentist or doctor would react in this way, but the situation does create a form of psychological stress which even highly-trained "professionals" are NOT equipped to handle...without considerable professional help. Altogether, a very complex conundrum!

For those dentists and doctors who are not so exclusively identified with their job titles and professional egos, the road ahead is much simpler. They willingly take responsibility and do their own research into these very real medical issues, as did Drs Weston Price, George Meinig, and Hal Huggins, etc.

Our entire Healthcare system is in a serious crisis, and it is a crisis which impacts every single one of us. We all need to support radical reforms. "Privatization" is NOT the solution. Big Pharma can quietly buy out and incorporate any such ventures into its own greed-based game plan. In this situation, we need our Government to actually govern...to drop all partisan posturing and actually make use of its size to break the hold these monster corporations have on the people and soul of this country. In such an environment, the kind of valuable research that was done in "Uninformed Consent" or "Root Canal Cover-up" could be conducted with respect and support, rather than with accusations of quackery that are intended only to silence those who question the staus quo!

Sheesh!...hadn't intended to start waving the flag or anything...just thought I would say a few things to show the actual value of books like this one. I didn't know it was all going to strike such a "nerve"...ha-ha. In any case, critical transformations like those mentioned in this review will take time and the efforts of a population far less divided than we are now...or as conflicted as those dentists and doctors I've referred to above. Good luck to us.

I hope a few folks find this rambling "essay" to be useful in some way ;-)

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your LifeJust a great little book written by two physical therapists. The idea the book is based upon is that the antidote to aging is activity. So what kind of activity do you need?

To answer this question, the book begins by having you evaluate your physical performance so you can identify those areas that you need the most work in. Thus, you complete five tests that assess your posture, strength, balance, flexibility, and enduranceor what the book calls "the five domains."

After finishing these tests, you should have a pretty good idea of what areas you need the most work on. From there, you just go to the posture chapter or the balance chapter, or the strength chapter and so onwhatever chapters you need the most.

Each chapter contains additional "tests" for the reader to do to further hone in on problem areas. These are kinda neat and very easy for just about anybody to do. After these specific tests, easy-to-do exercises are provided. For instance, the posture chapter contains a lot of stretching exercises. the strengthening exercises use a theraband which comes with the book, the balance exercises (there are eight) are simple i.e. stand on one leg, flexibility exercises which cover your neck area down to your legs, and endurance exercises such as walking, jumping rope or cycling.

The book ends with a brief chapter called "Putting It All Together" which ties up loose ends such as coping with soreness and staying consitent with exercise.

All-in-all its a neat book with a wealth of evidence-based information and simple exercises you can do with little or no equipment. Other books I liked in the body repair genre include Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear that keeps you from exercising. Good luck with the tune-up!

Three times in the last several years, I have had physical problems bad enough to require a PT (physical therapist). Each time, the PT helped me get back to health. Two of these times, the PT allowed me to avoid surgery. I came away with great respect for the philosophies, skills, and knowledge that PTs have.

Now I find that, while I don't have any major physical problems, I need something to keep my body at its best. There are many books about staying fit past 50. I wanted one written by a PT. I could find two, this one and another book Marilyn Moffat wrote with Steve Vickery. This is by far the better book.

This book breaks fitness down into 5 categories: Posture, Strength, Balance, Flexibility, and Endurance. For each category, the book offers a series of simple self-evaluations. Then the book offers several exercises for each of these five categories. What makes this book particularly helpful is that exercises are targeted according to the results of the self-evaluations. I was able to find those areas where I need the most help, then target the exercises that help me the most.

Buy Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life Now

As an exercise trainer myself, I was delighted to see a book on exercise by physical therapists, the real exercise specialists. Because they have the medical background to safely prescribe exercises which respect our aging joints, I highly recommend this book to those over 50 and those under 50 who want to embark on an exercise routine. It is well written, clear, concise and easily understandable and useable. Given that it is so necessary for all of us to work on maintaining good posture and balance, this book maps out exercises with precise instructions and photos to specifically focus on these areas. It provides an excellent explanation of the aging process and the changes that occur within our bodies, and then prescribes exercises to counteract and work with these changes. The exercises will help those who want to gain strength and endurance, increase flexibility, and improve balance. My personal recommendation (after you have read the book) is to suggest hiring a physical therapist to come to your home to help you fine tune your program, see that you are doing the exercises correctly, and to offer a few alternatives as well.

This is a book that will help ease you back into fitness. I recommend it to friends who would like to get started on a fitness program and don't know where to start, as well as a few who have injured themselves and want to continue exercising. To date, I've purchased three copies for myself and close friends.

Here's my experience with Age Defying Fitness. I purchased a copy after reading a NYT review with the goal of improving my posture. Upon receiving the book, I read the first seven pages then skipped to the chapter on posture. The next morning I took the posture self-assessment tests and got a baseline reading. Next I started through the chapter "8 Great Exercises for Posture". The exercises were challenging but doable and, before I knew it, I was doing them every day!

The improvement in my posture in the next three weeks was astounding, according to both the self-assessment tests and feedback from friends. I was so inspired I decided to work on my core muscles using the "8 Great Exercises for Neck and Trunk." Before I knew it my abs were strong and physical things I enjoy doing, like gardening, just got easier and easier.

I've made so much progress that I no longer regularly see my chiropractor for neck adjustments. Now I know how to release neck tension and have strengthened my back and abdominal muscles to the point that my body stays in good alignment every day. I've also been able to leverage what I learned to help me deeply relax at night. When I go to bed, I use one 10 second repetition of exercise 1, 4 and 5 from "8 great exercises for posture" and one repetition of each of the neck strengthening exercises from "8 great exercises for neck and trunk" (there are four of them) as a 3 minute relaxation sequence which prepares me to sleep.

I haven't made it through the other chapters yet. My physical progress resulting from the posture and core muscle training inspired me to start using my Bowflex again (which had become a sweater holder in the past year). However, I still do the posture and core muscle training from Age-Defying Fitness three times a week and my relaxation sequence every day to keep my posture going strong.

If you know you need to exercise and are wondering how to start, I recommend you buy this book and work your way through it. The self-asessment tests help you document your baseline and progress. Exercises are clearly written and there are photos that illustrate proper positioning for each one. Plus, each section of the book (there are five: posture, strength, flexibility, balance and endurance) starts with an explanation which helps you understand what was going on with your body as your fitness level declined over time and how to reverse the trend.

Get fit! You know you can do it. And when you do, you'll be telling others about this springboard to fitness.

To stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible is the goal of most of us . This book is aimed to help us in this quest. Its focus is on exercising as a means of improving our physical health. It recommends we begin by going to a physical therapist and assessing our physical health in five areas, posture, balance, flexibility, strength and endurance. After the assessment is made we then can begin to seek out the customized health plan we need.

According to the authors even the very old can improve their physical health by the proper forms of exercising. The book contains carefully described exercises to improve our situation in each of the areas involved. It also provides vital information regarding the areas concerned.

Its approach and recommendation is activist. Its implication is that leaving ourselves alone is not good enough. The physical processes of deterioration which take place for instance in bone density, and joint flexibility requre that we try to offset them through exercising.

There is no doubt that careful reading of this book, and application of its lessons will improve the health of most.
