Debbie Kaminski RNAfter reading Nancy's first book Feng Shui:Harmony By Design, I was looking forward to reading her second. The way she connects health issues, home environments and your Chakra energy system is groundbreaking, refreshing and changing the way that we will understand, diagnose and treat illness in this new millennium! It was very informative, user-friendly and it brings a new awareness to anyone who is looking for emotional, spiritual and environmental answers that cannot always be found in the traditional medical community.I bought this book about 2 years ago. I am here getting the link to the page to recommend it to another person and though I would write a review. I wasn't sure if feng shui would actually help any of my issues but wow. I mean just reading it, it was like doing a dream interpretation and it was describing my life. She said if you put your bed behind a door, stuff would go on behind your back which was happening and the cleaver designed house sleeping on the blade wall or putting things against it would result in losses and severings(the garage pokes out in front making the house design like a cleaver with handle). My ex was sleeping in the room with his bed to the blade wall when I separated from him and then when he left I moved into that room and had all sorts of losses happen to myself including health. When I moved things around as she suggested (which her method doesnt use a compass and goes by the enterance to the room and is quite easy) things automatically started improving. My health, my support system, I was on disability and got off and got a job, the contension in my life with my ex left and he left me alone, money got amazing and I went in one year from being on disability and renting a home to buying my own... I truly recommend her techniques. Hard to believe changing furniture around can change your life but I guess life is like dreaming and everything is symbolic and energy, and you can use the dream, energy and symbols to understand and to manifest...This is an extensive re-review of basic Feng Shui, and has very little to do with Health as mentioned in the title.

No More Dirty Looks: The Truth about Your Beauty Products--and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean
Posted by
Unknown
The journey for the authors starts when they go to get a Brazilian Blow-Out and discover that formaldehyde is an active ingredient in the product. (Formaldehyde is used to embalm dead people, FYI and is considered a carcinogen.) From there, the authors begin research into all kinds of health and beauty products.
They discover that the FDA doesn't do a very good job in protecting the health of people. One of the most disturbing truths discovered is that endocrine disruptive chemicals are found in baby products and products pregnant women use.
What many people do not realize is that the skin is the largest organ and that it is porous. when you apply a products, it goes through the skin and into the bloodstream. All those chemicals found in makeup and perfume and inside your body! And there are literally 1000's of them.
The best art of the book is that safe and effective alternative beauty products are suggested. Ones that are also not tested on animals.
I have been using safe, chemical beauty products (and safe stuff for home, etc) for years now. I am familiar with many of the products suggested and YES they are effective! (Like anything else, you have to test and see for yourself.) Once you get used to these products, you will not miss the chemical-laden ones with their fake smells!
The reason for 4 stars? I was not pleased with the way this book was written at times, with way too casual words--as if these were two girls writing about some silly subject instead of the very serious subject matter that it is. It only serves to make one question their credibility....that said, I have done enough research to know they are on to the facts.
I also recommend IN DEFENSE OF FOOD by Michael Pollen to learn about healthy food( or any of his books,)HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET to discover how to detoxify all products you use AND find great, healthy alternatives, and HOW TO GROW FRESH AIR to clean your home of toxins.
Highly recommend! This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about health, beauty and the environment. I was shocked to learn about the cosmetic industry from up close and how little they are protecting my health. This book gave me all the info on the cosmetics I was using that were bad for me and then I got a bunch of ideas about how to change my attitude and my products. I have been using clean and natural beauty products since and my skin feels amazing and I feel better about the industry I am supporting. Great read, I'm giving it to all my loved ones.I've read this book twice already and consider it essential reading for anyone who wants to take more control over what they're putting on and into their bodies. We blindly assume that cosmetics must be safe if they've made it onto the shelf of our local drugstores, and as O'Connor and Spunt make clear, nothing could be further from the truth. I've been gradually switching my products over to clean ones, but this book helped me complete the transition with concrete tips and amazing suggestions. If you care about your health, the environment, and your looks, then carry this book in your purse whenever you go shopping for products until you've memorized which chemicals to avoid! And make it a gift for any moms (and dads) you know so they can be better informed when they shop for sunscreens and soaps for their babies and children. Thanks to the authors for putting together such a groundbreaking and fun read!! (They also host a fab blog with daily posts and recommendations that will help you stay on top of your health and beauty regimes: )pros:
1. easy to read/understand delivery. No technical jargon to wade through. Terms That the average person wouldn't know are explained in plain English.
2. Each subject (i.e. lotion, lipstick, acne cream, etc) has only a page or two to read through to get the relevant info.
3. Good organization of the information. I can find exactly what I want without wading through every thing I don't.
4. Good information. Helpful hints. Each chapter has the section "why these products are bad" followed by the section "here are products that are good and where you might find them to buy them, or how to make your own."
5. comprehensive in the types of products covered. Probably a majority I have never used, or only used once or twice in my life.
6. Also covers other ways of making yourself beautiful naturally, (i.e. good health, good lifestyle, etc.)
cons:
1. I found the use of swear words in the book to be flippant and unprofessional. While they don't occur all the time, I am one who believes that strong words should be reserved for special occasions where a strong impact is desired. That didn't happen here. There was no need, and therefore it came off as offensive rather than effective. There were also a few mild references to human sexuality that I thought didn't add to the book.
2.While it's nice not to have to read through a chapter for every cosmetic product, I felt like some things were kind of skimmed over and could have used more detail. In some places it felt more like an overview than a truly informative book. Once again, this is both a pro and a con.
3. I would have liked to see more "make at home" possibilities. Surely there's more out there that you can use to clean your hair than the old "baking soda and vinegar."
Also, they mentioned that Baby Soaps have these "bad" chemicals in them too but offered no alternatives for your little ones, nor discussed the effects of adult "clean" soaps for your little ones.
Over all I thought this book was worth the read, and the information presented was valuable.
-MelissaI am a Sephora addict. I love makeup, and love perfume over 180 bottles...you could say I have a problem. I first started seeing tags such as "No parabens" "PABA free" on certain brands of makeup. This got me looking into the makeup I own and all the chemicals that go in them. Reading this book was like removing the wool from my eyes, I now know what propylene glycol is and why phthalates are bad for you. So much of what goes into our cosmetics is completely unregulated by the FDA which leaves the consumer to understand ingredients on their own. That is no simple task, but it can be with No More Dirty Looks. My sister lent me her copy, and I plan on getting a copy for myself, and spreading the word to my fellow females.
If you want to know:
what ingredients are in your makeup,
why those ingredients are bad for you,
what makeup you can replace it with,
then this is the book for you!
Petite Retreats: Renewing Body, Mind, and Spirit without Leaving Home

Wrong.
After a friend gave me a copy of Petite Retreats: Renewing Body, Mind, and Spirit without Leaving Home as a gift, I found that I can--and must--make time for myself. In fact, I'm a better person for it.
Home should not be just one more place to work and tend to the needs of others, the authors coach their readers. We think we have to spend money and find time to run away from home to recharge our batteries; but, these writings helped me see beyond these obstacles and find ways to enjoy short and inexpensive getaways in my own house. Ahhh.
I was so tickled with this book that I've given it to my harried friends to encourage them to also find time to relax and retreat.
Read it, re-read it, and mark your favorite retreats. You'll find its well worth your time.If you are stressed out, feeling frantic, and sure you have no time to take some time out for yourself, think again. In an easy to read and engaging style, the authors clearly outline a variety of inviting, fun petite retreats, at least one of which will surely appeal to every taste. Along with a step by step guide to planning a retreat, Mastro and Harding offer some thoughtful wisdom about caring for yourself that makes so much sense that it is hard not to start planning your first 3 hour (or all day) retreat immediately. I followed their steps and chose a personal petite retreat, put it on my calendar, and some 8 days later I found myself in my kitchen, music playing, mixing up a batch of banana bread loaves that filled the house with such wonderful smells, I found myself smiling and feeling thoroughly refreshed. (OK, so that may not be your idea of a petite retreat, but each to his own!) I was so refreshed, that I put another petite retreat on my calendar for about 6 weeks later. This one I planned for a full day, despite the fact I "didn't have time." What I discovered is that I DO have time if I make time, and the benefits of that short "just for me" retreat pays dividends for weeks. Anticipating it, and then savoring it, seem to add to the pleasure of the actual time taken. I highly recommend this book, especially as we enter the holiday season! (It would make an excellent gift, too.)

For me, my great hope is that this book does become number ONE on the NY Times best seller list for the more people who read this book, then a better world we will have. This book is a must read by all who want a better world.Joel Salatin is a genius, and in my opinion, a hero of the people. If you have an inkling of doubt about mainstream food sources or want to know if "organic" is really the way to go, you will get a LOT from this book. There is so much about the current mainstream food ideology that are fabrications of mega food corporations and government agencies. The current system is in place to crank out huge profits, not to promote health and nutrition for citizens. I have read several books on food issues, and this one ranks in the top 2-3 for me. It definitely adds a new angle that cannot be found in other literature on the subject (namely more detail on food policy/legislation, which blew my mind!). More people need to be enlightened to the honest, historically-supported truth that America's approach to food AIN'T NORMAL. Amen, Joel! Please read/listen to this book, and then share it with a friend! This book is packed full of so many wonderful ideas for growing food locally and sustainably and sensibly. I wish it was required reading for everyone--especially every one of our politicians on all levels and all college students in programs for agriculture, environmental sustainability, etc. I'm ordering three more copies to donate to my daughter's college library and environmental program.
Live More, Want Less: 52 Ways to Find Order in Your Life

One of the ways I look at book to see if I like it, is to select a couple of random pages scattered through the book. If something jumps out at me that I find interesting in 2 of the 3 random hits, I know I am onto something. When looking through this book initially, I was finding interesting ideas and actions that I could execute, in every page I looked at. I knew I was onto something here, and so I read the entire book. Let's look at just a few of the interesting thoughts and actions that she has come up with:
* Write down where your items live Interesting isn't it. She is treating an item as though it had a life of its own, and in the end, it does. You could call it the emotional lives of things we own. The objects we possess take on their own lives. You buy an exotic car, and all of a sudden you are committed to taking care of it, from washing it to changing the oil. Think before you enter into this relationship.
* The things you use the most often should have the prime real estate in your home Think about it, do you really want to fish around in a closet for something you use 3 times a week. We have to set order in our lives, and this book shows you how to do it.
* Take a vacation from your problems This is from the old Bill Murray movie. Unless it was explained to you, you would never think about it but it's true. You have a problem, you think it through. Once you have exhausted yourself thinking about it, do we really need to obsess over it for hours and days? Take a vacation from it.
* Free means free of charge; it doesn't mean it is free of space. How many of us own scores of items that we have never subsequently used but because we got it for free, we retain it, and it gobbles up space in our closets and our lives.
* If most of your time is spent with people who drain you of energy, it's time to rethink the people we are missing out on more fulfilling experiences in life. Be with people that enrich us.
* Concentrate on the joy in the process, and the results will take care of themselves.
CONCLUSION:
I found this book very valuable in terms of helping us think about the things we should already be thinking about. I have already put into effect several concepts that I learned from the author's work, and isn't that supposed to be what it's all about. Reading something new and then making your life better by implementing it? Thank you for reading this review.
Richard C. StoyeckThis isn't a typical book about organizing because the focus is on simplifying life itself, not just the material things we collect. The author asks the reader to consider that "choosing lightness over heaviness, opting to subtract, not add" will actually open up more room mentally, emotionally, and physically to live a better life.
The book consists of 52 weekly exercises that include a personal narrative by the author, a list of suggested daily practices, and a reflection she calls "The Way". This is a term that contributes to the new-age tone of the book "Taoist-inspired" as the publisher describes it that I personally didn't care for but I was able to sift through it to the good, practical advice for leading one's life instead of it being the other way around which is why I gave it four stars instead of three.
One of the topics I appreciated was "freecycling" (week 38) that challenges the reader to consider that getting things for free isn't always a good thing and can end up becoming even more clutter. "The Way" reflection for that week says "Being addicted to the idea of acquiring something just because it is free misses the point of value. Things are of value only when you use them, not simply because they cost you nothing."

When I first starting to read the book I started at the beginning with the idea of going from chapter to chapter to the end. But, after I started to read it I looked more closely at the index and found some subjects that I wanted to read now, not when I picked up the book again. And so I found myself referring to chapters as individual events and couldn't wait to pick up the book to find something else that caught my interest. Each chapter can apply to everyone at one time or another in their lifetime. Mary has hit the mark on many levels with her assessment of the problems, and the "Why" it happens, which I believe is key to change,...and, then presents many solutions on how you can "fix" the situation one step at a time.
She is so right about not expecting to find an instant fix. Your home does not get cluttered instantly, you don't gain weight overnight, nor did you become an extension of every bit of technology taking over your life. It takes time to analyze the "What", "Why" and "How" to find a solution to bring peace and order in your life.
She has done the work for you and she makes the path easy. I can see myself reading it over and over again as life progresses and new challenges arise

The remedy suggestions in this book have made ALL the difference. My senior kitty slurps the meds down in her drinking water and not only has returned to her bouncy self but her blood tests are improving.
The author of this book clearly knows his subject inside and out, and both loves and understands cats and their humans.
I have a little experiential background in homeopathy because I have had friends in the field, but I am no professional and would not attempt to "prescribe" for anyone except myself, but this book is so clear that one can take useful steps. It's very user-friendly, educational enough without overloading and highly practical.
I would recommend this with no hesitation at all.

I was just beginning homeopathy studies when my cat was dealing with some issues and I bought this book. It's a great beginners guide because it mostly tells you what remedy fits what symptoms and problems best. There are others that also tell you why certain remedies are better or why the symptoms have appeared. They are more expensive, but I think could be a bit overwhelming for a beginning homeopath. If you think of your cats as family, get this book.Want Homeopathy for Your Cat: Remedies for Common Feline Ailments Discount?
