Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios

Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case ScenariosThis is the absolute best preparedness book, ever, for average people in urban, suburban and rural areas. I've been following Lisa Bedford's "SurvivalMom" blog for a couple of years, pre-ordered this book and devoured it after it arrived. The comprehensive and well-organized guidance can take a person from zero preparedness to eclipsing 95% of the population with just one trip to the grocery store and a couple hours shopping on the Internet. Today I'm ordering copies for my sister and a couple friends who live near the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the Pacific Northwest and recommending on Facebook for everyone else. Really terrific contribution to promoting and facilitating preparedness. This book is obviously a project of an exceptionally detailed-oriented person who has devoted years to assembling the latest, most useful information in an accessible, efficient manner. The author also helpfully relates her personal experiences in going from a mom focused on getting her family through normal everyday life to one steeped in emergency preparedness scenarios and practical strategies for persevering (comfortably, if possible) through events ranging from routine power outages to being stranded on the road as well as longer-term situations. She also does not shy away from matters usually associated with survivalists -such as the need to not just be able to feed and shelter but also to be prepared to defend oneself and family. The Survival Mom book coupled with wilderness survival knowledge would put someone way ahead of the game (she briefly touches on some wilderness skills -like fire-starters -but does not, for instance, tell how to build a teepee, trap game or do other hard-core wilderness skills -there are plenty of other books on those subjects). In sum, this book is a great value and a keeper.

Living in California about 5 miles from the Hayward and San Andreas fault, you've got to think about the "what ifs". Think it can't happen to you? Think again.... I used to live in Michigan where an ice storm has taken out the power for 2 weeks in the dead of winter. No matter where you live, the unexpected can happen.

"Survival Mom" covers the basics including food storage, water purification, financial and medical preparedness and communication during a crisis. It goes way beyond the basics, however, with the addition of charts, checklists and worksheets to help you stay organized.

A great way to get ready for that 6.5 to 7.5 quake we know will happen someday in San Francisco.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and I've got to say, this book does an outstanding job of filling a long standing need a survival book for your typical homemaker. I have an entire floor-to-ceiling bookshelf full of survival books and my wife hates every one of them. This book however, is something she would sit down and read! Reading the book, it is immediate evident that it was written by a mom for moms. Not that men can't read it, it reads just fine for me, but it is very different in its tone and presentation.

If you've been wanting to get your wife more involved in preparedness then get her this book! She might finally understand what you've been going on about!

I was as excited to receive my copy of Survival Mom. I know you're supposed to be neutral before you start reading, but I will admit I had high expectations for this book. Having visited The Survival Mom blog for a couple of years, I know it is my "go-to" place to find out about emergency preparedness and survival information.

The book is well organized and describes every facet of preparedness including having the proper mindset and avoiding panic, water and food storage, organizing your home to optimize space, learning to live without electricity, finances, safety and security and much more. I recommend reading it from start to finish to get the most out of the book, but busy readers who have an agenda in mind can easily jump around and choose a chapter they are most concerned about. Throughout the book are interesting anecdotes, quizzes, quotes and lists that enhance learning and add variety to your reading experience. The tone is light, and never alarming or oppressive.

The book met and exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it. Whether you are new to preparedness, intermediate or a veteran, you will find this book a valuable resource to keep in your survival library.

Are you confused with all the "prepping" or "survival" info out there? Wonder who or what to believe? Do you wonder why, how and where to start, or how to assess and beef up your prepping efforts? Do you want the hype-free message with no sale pressure?

If so, you will love this book, Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios

by Lisa Bedford.

Chapter One sets the tone for the entire book, "Prepare More, Panic Less." This is the message that comes through loud and clear. It matters not what the motivation is for our family preparations (whether natural disaster, job layoff, illness or something bigger), Lisa Bedford takes us step by step from awareness to action, starting with her own story in the introduction entitled "From Suburban Mom to Survival Mom."

Let's face it, the media is grabbing ahold of this "prepping" movement and is bringing it into the forefront and making it mainstream. People who never thought about storing food, water or extra blankets are now taking cues from tornado and hurricane survivors and packing 72 hour kits. With the reality shows such as "Doomsday Preppers" (no matter what your opinion of it, the show is topping the ratings and people are becoming aware of the need to prepare) and its copycats "Doomsday Bunkers" and those to follow, there are some Doom-and-Gloomers out there who are preaching panic and preying on those who are panicking.

Lisa Bedford's message says not so fast! On page 15 she recites "The #1 Rule of Preparedness... Do your best where you are with what you have."

From water to sanitation, food to organization and decluttering, from home security to survival finances, gardening, growing, preserving to living without electricity, from just starting out to seasoned "preppers" this book is one to have. Survival Mom was birthed and penned by a real-life wife and mom to other moms (but men can definitely identify) laid out in terms, reasoning and actions that we moms understand and relate to.

Great book to have on hand for the extensive checklists and information and it's the one that I will give to my family members who have not begun yet and don't know where to begin.

This book is for the whole family and has resources to get the whole family involved.

Fat Chicks Rule!: How To Survive in a Thin-Centric World

Fat Chicks Rule!: How To Survive in a Thin-Centric WorldWe had a chance to read Lara Frater's "Fat Chicks Rule!" When I asked Liza what she thought, she simply replied, "This is every woman's story..."

Lara talks of her "thin voice" you know the one that promises you friends, romance, success, beauty if you could only lose some weight. The same little voice the drives us back to the roller coaster world of dieting. And then one day, she stepped off the ride, and began to live her life . . .

And she wants the reader to live too! She wants them to reclaim their bodies from the diet industry and from media stereotypes of beauty. The writer takes the reader on a how to journey of Ruling as a Fat Chick!!

Fat Chicks Rule! is a great resource for everything the Fat Chick needs to live her life fully. Need a role model? Check out Fat Chicks in history or famous entertainers. Lara has done her homework; a practical guide covering everything from size-positive movies to shopping tips to dare we say it? Yes folks, SEX!! It's all there and more.

Even witty comebacks for those insensitive remarks. . . My favorite being, "There's a thin person inside you." "That's because thin people are so tasty!"

So, if you need some advice, looking for a place to shop, or need a little boost in the self-esteem department check out "Fat Chicks Rule!"

Your Friends at

Round. Plump. Zaftig. It doesn't matter what word you use, they all mean "fat." And it's beautiful. That's the message from Lara Frater in her new book, "Fat Chicks Rule." LF doesn't apologize for being on the heavy side and neither, she says, should any woman (or man) who's in the same general size category. Fat is fun. It's cool. It's a survival asset in more cultures and at more historical periods than anyone at the New England Journal of Medicine is ever going to admit. LF gives tons of information about the history of fat, the history of women, background on why the medical profession is not necessarily your friend, as well as advice on tips that makes it a little simpler for fat chicks to work, shop, play and travel. Most importantly, she tells her readers that as long as they eat well, exercise, and let common sense dictate their impulses to lose weight (rather than the billion dollar diet industry), they'll probably do just fine. I picked this book up on a tip from a friend at work (we're all on the heavy side) and I was amazed and excited to read a message that finally made sense to me after having heard the same recycled dogma from doctors, the government, and other so-called "professional" health experts who were obviously more interested in selling their own "health products" than my health. This book is a gem!

I *wanted* to love this book.

I have "Fat?So!" by Marilyn Wann, which I loved and found absolutely life changing, so I bought this one as a companion to that volume. I agree with other reviewers that if you are only going to buy one "Fat" book, buy "Fat?So!", it is, by far, the best.

Mostly this is a good book. It does have some problems though.

1. It was in *dire* need of a good editor. The author is a very good, engaging writer, but whoever her editor was, they should be fired and find work in some other field. This book is *full* of typos, incomplete sentences, in one chapter the last part of the final paragraph of the chapter just wasn't there ... like it got accidentally deleted. While this did not detract from the over all value of the book, it was really, really irritating.

2. I wasn't that impressed with the "fluffy" stuff up front what movies I should be watching as a Fat Chick, what clothes I should be buying, what styles are "cool" and which ones aren't, etc. I found that part annoying as well, and unfortunately, it was unwisely placed at the beginning of the book the first several chapters are "fluff". It would have been more appropriately placed in the back of the book after the "meat" of the book [again an editing problem].

Once you get past those initial chapters you get to the "good stuff", the meaningful stuff, the stuff that will help you improve your life and enjoy it more. That part is great.

3. It felt like the author was pretty angry writing the book. While I definitely understand the anger and where it comes from, I think the book would have been better if anger could have been set aside at least a little. In contrast, Marilyn Wann in "Fat?So!" manages to communicate her anger, sadness, outrage, and frustration with our "skinny culture" without seeming too bitter in fact, she's really funny about it and uses humor as a way to cope, encouraging the reader to do so also. It makes for a better, more constructive read.

All in all, this book is worth buying and the author writes an enjoyable and educational book.

With a little bit of judicious editing, this could have been an outstanding book.

Fat Chicks Rule is a great book. As our society is so obsessed with women being "skinny" and makes big women feel like losers(which they are not!)this book gives big women a much needed boost. As a man,I dated "skinny women" and was married to a "skinny woman" and let me tell you it was some of my worst relationships experiences I ever had! After my divorce I dated big women and now I'm in a relationship with a big woman and those were the best relationships. My current big g/f is great.Pretty face, nice personality(plus I love the big bust and nice thick thighs!)and great in the you know where! So big ladies, read Fat Chicks Rule! it will really be of help and remember, there are alot of men like me out there who love big women. The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men: From Heart Disease and Headaches to Flabby Abs and FatigueThis book is a great idea for someone that wants to solve a minor problem he may be having (such as dry hair, sunburn, or sore throat) without having to pay a doctor or look for advice for hours on the internet. Healing Hepatitis and Liver Disease Naturally: Detoxification. Liver gall bladder flush & Cleanse. C

Healing Hepatitis and Liver Disease Naturally: Detoxification. Liver gall bladder flush & Cleanse. Cure Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B. Lower blood cholesterol and stop cirrhosisI just received this book today, and looking through it, it looks like it has a LOT of very useful info! BUT I'm disappointed in the HUGE DARK GRAY WATERMARK ACROSS EVERY SINGLE PAGE. This watermark has the publisher's logo and name, obscures the printing and makes the book hard to read. It is dark gray, 4 inches long, 1/2 inch tall, and is diagonal across the middle of every page. I understand if they wanted to keep people from copying the book, but isn't there technology to make the watermark lighter and have it show up dark in a photocopy (like the background of a paycheck does)?

I give the book itself 4.5 stars, but knocked it down to 3.5 because I'm having so much trouble even reading it. Very frustrating, I wonder if the author knows what's being done to his book?

Bottom Line: If you can get past the watermark problem, this is a good book to have.

UPDATE on 09/03/2012: I have now read more of the book and can make further comments.

PROS:

1) There really is SO much useful info in this book (just look at the table of contents!). It's nice to have so much information in one place. I learned a lot that I didn't already know, especially about my body's lymphatic system, just what bile is, and what the gall bladder does. I'm glad he included info on the liver/gall bladder flush.

2) I love that the author tells us honestly how Hepatitic C is transferred and NOT transferred. I am so sick of the mis-information in a lot of books and on the internet. This author states directly you CANNOT get Hep C from any activity that does not involve transfer of blood. End of story. Thank You Mr. Oyakhire.

3) There are MANY more pros, too many to list, the book is packed with information!

CONS:

1) No index. This book is so dense, it is screaming for an index, and I love an index. It's the first thing I look for in any non-fiction book.

2) The book is full of typos, but I can forgive those to get all of this great info, all except one. On page 101 we have this sentence: "Starches do not combine well with meats, so meats should be eaten with rice, potatoes, or bread." Obviously this should read "should NOT be eaten with...". This typo changes the entire meaning, and if someone is not paying close attention they may not catch it, and could eat a food combination that causes further harm to their body and liver.

3) And speaking of meat, the author provides a section of 42 recipes for healthy eating, with 20 of these recipes containing meat. Then AFTER the recipe section, there is a section going into great detail about how eating meat is bad for our livers. Huh? Then if you are going to include meat recipes, maybe the "meat is bad" disclaimer should come BEFORE the recipes. Or better yet, have more healthy recipes that don't include meat.

4) One of the recipes calls for Tuna. I recently had a job working in a laboratory testing Tuna for Mercury, and I can honestly tell you that 75% of the Tuna I tested had more than the legal limit of Mercury (more than 1ppm). Tuna is a very large fish, lives a long time and therefore has a lot of time to accumulate Mercury in its body, Mercury that it gets from the pollution we dump into the ocean. NO-ONE should eat Tuna! Especially someone with liver disease. Mercury is a heavy metal that builds up in your body, it does not go away, and it attacks your nervous system among other things.

5) I'm glad there's a list (on page 158) of things to avoid in order for my liver to heal, but I have an inquiring mind and I want to know WHY to avoid them. Especially the rubbing alcohol. I looked online and cannot find any reference as to why I should avoid this. I can only assume that it's because it's so volatile and breathing any chemical is bad for my liver.

Another bottom line: I AM glad I bought this book, it has much useful information and I've learned a lot from it. I can tell that the author is passionate about the topic and put a lot of work into this. I definitely think the book is worth buying! :-)

My heartfelt gratitude to the author for taking his time to share here a wonderful knowledge of the human form and how to maintain it's integrity. Purely holistic and complete. Deep gratitude. I was born to a mom with HBV which makes me a chronic carrier. Last two years my liver enzyme rates would flare up from time to time, but always just slightly above the normal level. In the beginning of April, I found myself very tired , no appetite and slightly jaundiced. I went to my doctor and results came out 2 weeks later were alarming. AST almost 1K and ALT over 1.5k and viral load was beyond possibility of measurement. I thought the traditional treatment was the only way. After lots prayers and researches, all directions pointed to this book. I began to follow Dr. Oyakhire recommendations in the beginning of May and increasingly taking different herbs, intensifying exercises, changing diet, liver and colon cleansing, etc. Meanwhile learning from other books. Seven weeks later, on June 21, the first miracle: seroconversion of HBe to negative. Sept. 18th test results showed more miracles, both AST and ALT are in the normal rates, i.e. under 40; viral load slightly above 10K IU.

I also recommend other books: Prescription for Natural Cures: A Self-Care Guide for Treating Health Problems with Natural Remedies Including Diet, Nutrition, Supplements, and Other Holistic Methods; Prescription for Nutritional Healing, Fifth Edition: A Practical A-to-Z Reference to Drug-Free Remedies Using Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & Food Supplements; The First Year---Hepatitis B: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed.

For herbs: Himalaya Herbal Healthcare LiverCare/Liv.52, Liver Support, 180Vcaps; brands like Swanson; FoodNOW. I won't buy anymore from Jarrow Formulas since it's just a distributor with a very limited in-house scientific team.

For this book I bought KINDLE edition and has lots typos.
