Homeopathic Medicine At Home

Homeopathic Medicine At HomeI have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....

I would like to see a better cross-referenced Index, but the numerous charts supplied somewhat make up for this short-coming making it pretty easy to locate the problem/illness without too much difficulty. It also contains a nice little Materia Medica in the back -so if you can't decide between several remedies this will help narrow the choice as it gives the specifics for the remedy as opposed to the main part of the book which gives the recommended remedies for the illiness.

I often back it up with "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines" by Stephen Cummings & Dana Ullman but if I had to choose only one book to purchase I would go with the book I am reviewing.

Another small short-coming of the book is it doesn't cover CELL SALTS as completely as needed (although, to be fair, no "quick-guide" homeopathic book does with any depth anyway). which is why I would recommend the companion book: "Natural Healing with Cell Salts" by Dr. Skye Weintraub. Personally, I have found cell salts to work extremely well in conjunction with homeopathic remedies. Even though I practice the principals of classical homeopathy (ONE remedy at a time changing the remedy until you find the one that works, & change remedies as soon as symptoms change &/or the current remedy no longer works) I still like to combine a homeopathic remedy with a cell salt. (A good example here would be a fever with a flushed face: homeopathic remedy might be Belladonna, and add the cell salt Ferr Phos.)

Over-all I couldn't give the book 5 stars due to the inadequate Index and less-than-stellar coverage of CELL SALTS, but for my money, this is still a best-bet!

If you are new to homeopathy I can not encourage you enough to pursue this wonderful means of natural healing! And if you are a Christian, I urge you NOT to get hung up on the aspect of energetic healing until you learn more about the principals. I am a Christian who have seen ignorant fellow-Christians shrink at the idea of homeopathics as if they were some kind of voodoo. This is simply a fear-driven response that hopefully will be re-evaluated.

Anyone interested in pursuing the principals of healing through homeopathic medicine, more in-depth, would do well to purchase the book "The Science of Homeopathy" by George Vithoulkas and also get a Materia Medica by Boerricke and a "Repertory" by J. T. Kent. You could also call your local naturopath & ask if they offer classes. Anyone can learn homeopathy. I began when my children were born and they never had to take antibiotics more than once throughout their entire childhoods. They are now all adults who practice homeopathy with their own families, and this is the first homeopathic book I gave them as a gift when they moved into their new homes (along with a basic supply of remedies). Good luck, and God bless.

Of all the homeopathic books written for the general public, this is one of the most useful. If you've suffered a minor injury, or come down with a cold, flu or earache, or if you are having an upset stomach, this book will quickly guide you to the correct remedy. It is easily understood by the medical layperson, and it will give you solid knowledge of how to treat yourself and others in a safe, natural way, without the risks, side-effects and costs of conventional drugs.

It goes without saying that any self-help book, no matter how good, does not replace the care of a medical professional. If you have a serious or chronic condition, and you think that homeopathy can help, go see a qualified homeopathic practitioner.

I am just starting out in homeopathy, so take this into account. I love this book, it has charts in it that have quick reference that lists the remedy, specific indications, general symptoms, worse from and better from categories. It is perfect for me as a beginner!

This is the first book I bought on homeopathic medicine when I first began using it more than twelve years ago. I like the way it is written it almost feels as though you have a kindly physician sitting across from you. That being said, my one complaint with this book is the repetories/remedies pages that are placed at the end of each chapter. I have never used these and find them a bit confusing.

If you do buy this book (and I encourage you to it's well worth the investment) I would really encourage you to read the book through. Then you will be able to more easily find the remedies that apply to you in times of emergency. I now have several books on homeopathy on my shelves, and this is always the first one I turn to when I or a family member are sick.

Well worth the investment.

I was introduced to this book by a doctor friend of mine who actually went to the author as a patient years ago. Great reference book, easy layout, and good explanation of homeopathic remedies for beginners and those experienced. Goes great with Hyland and Boiron brand for my family. Hope this helps!

Live More, Want Less: 52 Ways to Find Order in Your Life

Live More, Want Less: 52 Ways to Find Order in Your LifeThe author Mary Carlomagno, does an outstanding job in this short 180 page, easily readable book of giving you 52 ideas to create more time to enjoy the things you love. The answer as you can probably already guess is LESS STUFF. The book is broken down into 52 different ideas, one for each week of the year. You open to a week, and there is one or two pages as a theme. The author has put together a metaphor to teach you what she is trying to convey. After the theme, you will find several very helpful hints giving you ideas as to how to implement the concept that was just described.

One of the ways I look at book to see if I like it, is to select a couple of random pages scattered through the book. If something jumps out at me that I find interesting in 2 of the 3 random hits, I know I am onto something. When looking through this book initially, I was finding interesting ideas and actions that I could execute, in every page I looked at. I knew I was onto something here, and so I read the entire book. Let's look at just a few of the interesting thoughts and actions that she has come up with:

* Write down where your items live Interesting isn't it. She is treating an item as though it had a life of its own, and in the end, it does. You could call it the emotional lives of things we own. The objects we possess take on their own lives. You buy an exotic car, and all of a sudden you are committed to taking care of it, from washing it to changing the oil. Think before you enter into this relationship.

* The things you use the most often should have the prime real estate in your home Think about it, do you really want to fish around in a closet for something you use 3 times a week. We have to set order in our lives, and this book shows you how to do it.

* Take a vacation from your problems This is from the old Bill Murray movie. Unless it was explained to you, you would never think about it but it's true. You have a problem, you think it through. Once you have exhausted yourself thinking about it, do we really need to obsess over it for hours and days? Take a vacation from it.

* Free means free of charge; it doesn't mean it is free of space. How many of us own scores of items that we have never subsequently used but because we got it for free, we retain it, and it gobbles up space in our closets and our lives.

* If most of your time is spent with people who drain you of energy, it's time to rethink the people we are missing out on more fulfilling experiences in life. Be with people that enrich us.

* Concentrate on the joy in the process, and the results will take care of themselves.

CONCLUSION:

I found this book very valuable in terms of helping us think about the things we should already be thinking about. I have already put into effect several concepts that I learned from the author's work, and isn't that supposed to be what it's all about. Reading something new and then making your life better by implementing it? Thank you for reading this review.

Richard C. Stoyeck

This isn't a typical book about organizing because the focus is on simplifying life itself, not just the material things we collect. The author asks the reader to consider that "choosing lightness over heaviness, opting to subtract, not add" will actually open up more room mentally, emotionally, and physically to live a better life.

The book consists of 52 weekly exercises that include a personal narrative by the author, a list of suggested daily practices, and a reflection she calls "The Way". This is a term that contributes to the new-age tone of the book "Taoist-inspired" as the publisher describes it that I personally didn't care for but I was able to sift through it to the good, practical advice for leading one's life instead of it being the other way around which is why I gave it four stars instead of three.

One of the topics I appreciated was "freecycling" (week 38) that challenges the reader to consider that getting things for free isn't always a good thing and can end up becoming even more clutter. "The Way" reflection for that week says "Being addicted to the idea of acquiring something just because it is free misses the point of value. Things are of value only when you use them, not simply because they cost you nothing."

When I first starting to read the book I started at the beginning with the idea of going from chapter to chapter to the end. But, after I started to read it I looked more closely at the index and found some subjects that I wanted to read now, not when I picked up the book again. And so I found myself referring to chapters as individual events and couldn't wait to pick up the book to find something else that caught my interest.

Each chapter can apply to everyone at one time or another in their lifetime. Mary has hit the mark on many levels with her assessment of the problems, and the "Why" it happens, which I believe is key to change,...and, then presents many solutions on how you can "fix" the situation one step at a time.

She is so right about not expecting to find an instant fix. Your home does not get cluttered instantly, you don't gain weight overnight, nor did you become an extension of every bit of technology taking over your life. It takes time to analyze the "What", "Why" and "How" to find a solution to bring peace and order in your life.

She has done the work for you and she makes the path easy. I can see myself reading it over and over again as life progresses and new challenges arise

It's so easy to overwhelm yourself trying to make positive change in your life. Our inclination is to scale a mountain before we've climbed a hill. In "Live More, Want Less" Mary Carlomagno takes the mountains and reduces them to hills which I can climb. The approach has led me to make real change in my life. The weekly format gives me achievable goals to focus on and Mary's personal stories have me laughing out loud.

If you're looking to declutter your closet and your life I recommend starting here.

Making Natural Liquid Soaps: Herbal Shower Gels / Conditioning Shampoos / Moisturizing Hand Soaps

Making Natural Liquid Soaps: Herbal Shower Gels / Conditioning Shampoos / Moisturizing Hand SoapsI've been a cold-process soapmaker for 2 years and was ready to explore other kinds of soapmaking. I picked up C. Failor's book on liquid soapmaking and was hooked. There's a lot of great information here. Initially I was a bit overwhelmed before diving in, but that's how I felt before making my first batch of cold-process soap as well! Liquid soapmaking, like almost every other craft, requires just a little time and patience before it becomes second nature. My first batch of liquid soap was a success-perfectly crystal-clear-and with a couple more recipes under my belt, I feel as comfortable with this soapmaking as I do with cold-process soapmaking. I was a bit perplexed by the review of October 18th in which Michelle referred to hard-to-obtain chemicals and complex chemical equations. There are no chemical equations in this book and as for the chemicals-does she mean potassium hydroxide, borax, boric acid? Nor do I agree with her that this book is for "professional" soapmakers only. The book is for anyone who wants so make their own natural liquid soap ( since almost all liquid soaps on the market are synthetic).

Review of Making Natural Liquid Soaps, by Catherine Failor ISBN: 1-58017-243-1

Are we ready for something completely new in soap making? I think so. :)

Catherine Failor's new book is with the times. She has apparently been hard at work in her kitchen coming up with fun new ways to play with soap!

The focus here is making liquid soap, shampoo, dog shampoo, shower gels, and bubble bath. Yep, everything people have been asking me for lately.

This is NOT a cake mix type of book. It is complete instructions from making these items from scratch. One word of warning though, you WILL have to get POTASSIUM hydroxide to use this book. ....................

Ms Failor goes into great detail to explain her hot process method. There are lots of pictures to help! The friendly layout of this book will remind you of a magazine article. A very LONG magazine article, haahaa.

I just finished reading this and I have to tell ya, I have learned a lot about fats and soaps and hot process and liquid soaps, and so much more! There are little charts to help you help yourself in making your own recipes, although there are enough recipes in this book to keep you chained to the stove creating for a long time!

It is obvious that the author has been working with these recipes in her book for quite some time and has discovered the pitfalls before hand and already advised you how to handle them in the trouble shooting section.

There is a healthy section on blending scents, both fragrances and essential oils. And I can't even do my usual complaint about over usage of essential oils, haahaa, she uses the 'by the part' method of blending so it fits everyone's needs. ;)

Being alcohol sensitive myself, I really appreciate that she has two different methods in the book. There is a method that works without using alcohol to clarify the soap. She even gives properties of the various fats and oils that you use based on clarity of the finished products.

If you are the type of person who just won't follow complete instructions, this book is not for you. I think it is written well enough for a beginner to use, but I don't know that a beginner is so hooked on soap making that they will want to take this on. It is complicated as far as soap making goes. Liquid soap making and shampoo making require a lot more effort than cold process soap making. But, if you are a seasoned soap maker who has become a bit bored with doing the same ol' thing, this is definitely for you.

I'm excited to try out these shampoos and shower gels. :) ..............................................it is rare to find such a new topic that you can really sink your teeth in to. Also, it is rare to find such a complete book that isn't the same old thing with a different cover. :) I'm impressed and the book got me excited!

I highly recommend this book. :)...................

An excellent book which answers the questions I was wondering most about...both the details and the big picture...such as "what does the contents in the pan look like at different stages? What are the properties of the various ingredients? How do they react under different circumstances? This is a beautiful book also the second one I own by Failor. Being a graphic designer myself, with a definite scientific "bent," this seems to be an ideal text for me helps me make more sense of my cold-processing soap books also it's just the right combination of "visuals" and scientific, practical information. This book should be an essential in any soap-making addict's library.

I have been making cold process soap for years and was very excited to see this book that teaches you (finally) to make liquid soap through hot process. It is, however, very difficult to follow and there are several sections where the author trips up the reader and confuses the intructions. She also tells us to add color and scent and bottle your product immediately. This made my soap change weird colors and lose it's scent so I do not recommend this from my experience. Store it in a huge sealed tub, leave out the color, scent when it cools and bottle it when you are ready to give it to someone. I was able to turn out a nice batch this way but never felt as though I followed the directions properly. Also, unlike cold process, you cannot find all of your ingredients at the grocery store. You must find a chemical supplier which makes the process a little harder. On a whole, the book is great and unlike anything else on the market. This author continues to publish books that push the soapmaker one step further which I like. Be prepared for a good lesson in patience. This is not quick stuff as it took me a whole day to make my first batch. But like cold process, it gets easier and quicker the more you do it.

After making cold process soap for several several years, and working in product development for a major soap company, I must say that this book is interesting, but not very practical and certainly confusing. I suppose I need more science to really understand this process. I found the soap to be very drying, with a "fat" smell that was really hard to cover. Also, the shelf life was not very long.

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the WestI bought this book as a Christmas present for my dad, and he hasn't put it down since he got it. The detailed descriptions of habitat, appearance, and usefulness of each plant are supplemented by great color pictures, as well as instructions for avoiding dangerous look-alikes. I would highly recommend this book for hikers, backpackers, woodsmen, and anyone else that spends a lot of time outdoors.

This book is a good beginning book on edible and medicinal plants of the west. The pictures are excellent and really help in identify species. The only complaint I have with this book is that it is missing some important edible plant sources, and it is also could be more detailed in methods of cooking and eating the plants.

I have to give Tilford credit for preparing a great book. Don't let the title of this book fool you into thinking that it will only be useful for the western U.S. or Canada. This book would be a great addition to any forager or herbalist in the U.S. or Canada because at least 50% of the plants found in this book can be found in the east. The pictures are crisp and because of his knowledge of herbal medicine he offers thorough insight on warnings about plants where other authors lack. Has a great introduction and the plants are organized alphabetically by common name...not standard practice but is probably more useful for the amateur botanist. His index provides quick access for those more familiar with scientific names. Two major parts in this book "Edible and Medicinal Plants" and "Toxic Plants and Advanced Medicines". Each plant account has common and scientific names of the plant and its family followed by the defining characters. The bloom period, habitat range, edibility , look-alike plants, medicinal uses and any warnings are also included. The "Toxic Plants and Advanced Medicines" section contains 21 species and is very informative. Contains a brief but useful glossary and his "Bibliography and Recommended Reading" looks like it has some useful books to investigate.

I know little about foraging. The only other plant foraging books I've owned are by Euell Gibbons. Gibbons is a very entertaining author, but his books are not specific to my region, and they contain sketches not photos. Photographs are far superior to sketches. The downside is that the glossy paper required for photos is heavier. For you backpackers, this book is 8.5x5.5 inches and weighs a hefty 15.6 ounces. I weighed it myself. I give the book four stars instead of five because the plants are not categorized but in alphabetical order which makes looking up a plant much more difficult.

My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household

My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative HouseholdThree capable, strong, independent, professiional working women have proven cooperative living is possible and enjoyable if you're willing to co-operate,negotiate,and respect

your house mates. Patience and a good sense of humor help too! What is left out about their personal lives is as significant as the details included. Confident, but not

cocky, and not given to self-promotion or bragging. The information, insights, and questions at the end of the book make it a thorough "how to" guide book.

Anyone in any type of relationship or living arrangement can learn from this story.

If you are planning on sharing a house with friends, this book is one that you will want to read. It certainly helps you in being aware of issues that should be addressed before living together.

This is a complete and detailed look at an example of successful group living, which manages to be both informative and interesting. It is a good mix of personal, but not overly personal, narrative about what led each of the three single women authors to set up their communal household and very practical checklists and suggestions for persons who may consider such an arrangement. I enjoyed reading it out of curiosity about how this could work in practice. The authors are frank in discussing the potential downsides and real challenges they faced themselves, but make it clear that five years in, the arrangement is a winner for each of them.

Although a how-to guide to cooperative living, My House, Our House would be useful reading for ANYONE who shares living space.

The book is well organized, well written, and easy to read. It is more than a list of do's and don'ts. The authors tell the story of the house they bought and the home they made of it. There is even a menu from one of their Thanksgiving dinners.

There is much practical information about questions to ask, boundaries to set, and other nuts and bolts of making this type of living arrangement work. However, the authors also make it clear that serendipity was part of their decision. They were doing a drive by tour of houses for sale, when one of them impulsively made a left turn down an especially pretty street. There was a small "for sale by owner" sign. It stood in front of their dream house.
