The Barefoot Book: 50 Great Reasons to Kick Off Your Shoes

The Barefoot Book: 50 Great Reasons to Kick Off Your ShoesI received this book from the publisher in exchange for a review.

I didn't realize how much time I spend barefoot until I read this book. I'm constantly barefoot at home (I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I'm home pretty much the whole day); and when I do venture out, I tend to wear sandals so my feet can breathe and I can kick them off while driving or sitting at a restaurant. And yes, my feet need to breathe. It is amazing how much feet regulate the body temperature-and my feet need to stay cool because I'm going through menopause right now. If my feet get hot, my temperature goes up immediately and I literally feel like I can't get a decent breath. It's a weird feeling.

I think this book is a nice introduction to a barefoot lifestyle. Probably more for people thinking about it more so than the ones who actually practice it. I'm from that generation where shoes were put on kid's feet to "support the ankles." I was told never to go barefoot because I would get hookworm and as a kid, the thought of any kind of worm working its way inside your feet is scary! And when I stepped on a nail out in the woods that went deep into the arch of my foot, my mother triumphantly proclaimed, "See? I told you going barefoot was dangerous."

I was impressed with the anatomy lesson on the foot and I appreciate the research done and the bibliography of other sources to check out in regards to barefoot living. Dispelling myths about the foot and going shoeless, I learned that maybe some of my aches and pains in my hips and lower back might just be because of the shoes I choose to wear. After all these years, I might not be able to fix damage that has already been done, but maybe I can make what I have left work better.

Lots of food for thought here, and I recommend this book. I don't know how many people would really make a change to barefoot living, but I think more time spent barefoot is a good thing. New moms should pay particular attention as they can save their children a lifetime of aches and pains by being smarter. As the saying goes, "when you know better, you do better." Let your babies feet develop correctly right from the get-go.

I recently read The Barefoot Book: 50 Great Reasons to Kick Off Your Shoes by L. Daniel Howell. Mr. Howell, PhD, has a doctoral degree in biochemistry and teaches human anatomy and physiology at Liberty University in Virginia. His bio states that he is an avid barefoot runner with more than 2000 shoeless miles on his feet, and leads a barefoot hiking group. That gives him credibility in my eyes.

As the author of Fixing Your Feet: Prevention and Treatments for Athletes, this book caught my attention. I am seeing more and more people joining the barefoot and minimalist movement.Fixing Your Feet: Prevention and Treatments for Athletes

The premise of The Barefoot Book is that feet and shoes are at odds with each other. The author promotes a barefoot lifestyle and the subtitle, 50 Great Reasons to Kick Off Your Shoes, supports his cause to get readers to shed their shoes.

The book starts with a chapter that covers a short history of how shoes came to be. Chapter 2, "Living Barefoot," shares the stories of 10 people who have to live a life barefoot. I liked how chapter 3 went into detail about the foot and how it works. It was very informative and helpful, especially if the reader has little knowledge of the structure, form, and function of the foot.

The title, of chapter 4, What Your Shoes are Doing to You, carries forward the author's premise that shoes are bad for you. Readers learn a bit about the history of shoes and their construction and purpose; a lot about how shoes change the way stand, walk, run and feel the ground; followed by a discussion of negative conditions and injuries common to feet.

I found it interesting that the Howell would devote almost all of chapter 5 to the effects of high-heeled shoes, and a short bit of dress and work shoes. Chapter 6 is informative as we learn about the ways shoes affect children. All parents should read this chapter.

I loved chapter 7 where time was spent on walking, running, and hiking barefoot. This is a worthwhile subject given today's interest in going minimalist or shoeless. People wanting to try running and hiking barefoot, especially, need information on how to start out (slowly) and what to pay attention to. Howell does a good job of imparting this important information. Too many people want to try barefoot and do too much too soon, and become injured so this is an important chapter.

Chapter 9 offers alternatives in footwear for the times when one cannot go barefoot but want to be as minimalist as possible. Chapter 10, Getting Out There, starts with 11 ways you can start towards a barefoot lifestyle. The second half of the chapter deals with common hurdles, working barefoot, businesses, cold conditions, and social pressure. All helpful information.

I loved chapter 11, Mythbusters, where Howell debunks seven common myths about going barefoot. A few include driving barefoot, OSHA and the "bare feet prohibited" warnings, barefoot dangers, and barefoot liability. It was fun reading. For those interested in liabilities, the appendix lists five pages of a sampling of lawsuits where shoes were essential to the cause of the lawsuit.

So, were there actually 50 reasons to kink off your shoes and go barefoot? Yes. For a while, I kept paging through the book looking for an organized list. There was none. Then I discovered that throuought the book, on the outside of the page, were an outline of a barefoot. In the big toe outline was a number, 1 -50, and then inside the foot was a reason. Very cleverly done.

I recommend The Barefoot Book for those interested in trying the barefoot lifestyle. One could argue that we all need to try it and Howell does just that and does it well. My only reservation is that there is an obvious bias that shoes are bad for your feet. That said, Howell backs up his statements with facts that are hard to argue with. Read the book in the context of your lifestyle and make your own choices. Me? I love going barefoot at times. In fact, I think I'll try hiking barefoot this summer.

I'm an avid runner. For the past six months I've been researching barefoot running, and entertaining the thought of becoming a barefoot runner. After I completed my research, the notion of a barefoot lifestyle sounded perfectly natural, but I still had questions. This book thoroughly answered all of them.

In layman's terms, the author explains the anatomy and function or our feet. The importance of our heels, arches, toes, etc, and how they are made to support our daily activities. He discusses various health reasons why we should put aside our shoes, and gives 50 practical reasons to begin a barefoot lifestyle. The book contains a nice section on how to transition into barefoot walking, running, or hiking and provides an overview of the pros and cons of the minimalist shoes available. I've chosen to transition into barefoot running using the Vibram Five Fingers minimalist shoes. I've gone for my first "barefoot" run and to my surprise only had sore calves which is to be expected since you engage those muscle when you run barefoot. It's wonderful! My shins and knees don't hurt and my feet felt much lighterwhich improved my running time (that I loved).

This is a quick and easy read. It is the perfect book for the newbie interested in barefoot walking, running, hiking or a barefoot lifestyle. You will walk away an informed barefoot practitioner.

The Barefoot Book was a pleasant surprise to me at first I didn't believe that going barefoot now, at age 47 and with diabetic neuropathy and constant foot pain could possibly help me. I was wrong! It helps! My feet feel much better after gradually increasing the number of hours I go barefoot over a week!

The day I go this book was the day my podiatrist told me that my foot muscles have atrophied "due to diabetes." I can't begin to say how upset I was to get yet another lousy diagnosis. I am only 47 and my feet hurt all the time! A few months ago a different doctor wanted to do ankle surgery because my left ankle also hurts all the time, but I decided against it after talking to a PT who told me he has never yet seen ankle or foot surgery work out really well.

So, I read this book, and at first I wasn't convinced. When I read this quote in chapter 2 "I truly believe there would be fewer wars and less crime if we all went barefoot!" I was really turned and stopped reading it for half a day. Honestly, the first few chapters of the book aren't tremendously convincing. However, when my feet began to hurt again so badly that I had to lie down and elevate them, I decided I might as well keep reading. As I read farther, and go to the chapters with more convincing medical arguments, I figured I might as well give it a try and see what happened. Since I am at home much of the time, trying to go barefoot more often hasn't been a huge problem. I didn't expect it to help anything because my feet already hurt all the time, especially when I walk around, and I figured I really, really needed the padding in my ugly diabetic shoes to at least reduce the pain.

WRONG! What a surprise after only a week of gradually going barefoot inside my feet hurt A LOT LESS! In fact, when I put on my lace-up diabetic shoes to go out for a few hours, I was shocked by how much my feet hurt in the shoes. My feet did in fact feel much worse in the shoes. They felt inflexible, my gait felt uneven and unstable and I couldn't wait to get those shoes off even though just a week ago I would have said they were the most comfortable shoes I have ever had. Now I am working on making myself some soft, flexible, non-binding "shoes" that will protect the bottom of my feet from hot cement and rocky terrain. I think I never want to wear traditional modern shoes again. Go barefoot!

Here I am writing this, Barefoot (and NOT pregnant)...just had to emphasize that last detail. As a child, I was one of those ruffians who preferred running around the house buck naked and barefoot. Now, I realize our society does not look favorably upon my youthful preference for nil attire. Instead of running off to a commune amongst leftover Woodstockers, I relegated that fantasy to my edgy counterculturalists. Barefooting may challenge the norm, but it will not send me to the jailhouse for over-exposure. Bared feet are only immodest to those Victorian-era females forced to lace up for fear that a man might lust after that pointy ankle joint.

For the past twenty months, I have been experimenting with minimalist footwear, specifically the Vibram FiveFingers. This natural progression lead me to The Barefoot Book: 50 Great Reasons to Go Barefoot by Daniel Howell. Affectionately dubbed "The Barefoot Professor," Howell has appeared on various popular media, podcasts, and radio shows proclaiming his message of barefoot living for foot health and overall wellbeing. I watched a Today show interview of shoeless Howell with two well-heeled females, and I was intrigued by his audacity to buck the normal attire prerequisite. Can you think of any other interviewee who has appeared on mainstream television without shoes? Nor could I.

Having a Kindle, I can mark my favorite portions of the book for future reference. Here are five of my highlights.

* There have been injuries caused by trying to do too much barefoot activity too soon, before the feet and body can make the necessary changes that need to occur. This can take months to years.

* Encased within shoes whenever we exercise, our feet miss out on the action; while the rest of our body gets a workout, our feet are unable to flex, twist, grasp, feel, or breathe.

* We can regard the modern shoe as a cast.

* Habitual shoe wearing shortens the Achilles tendon to the point that simply standing without shoes can be uncomfortable or even painful.

* Shod runner suffer more injuries per mile than barefoot runners.

Here are five of my thoughts about this enjoyable beachside read.

* Though this book does provide a couple chapters with scientific diagrams and physiological explanations to support his hypothesis, the lay reader can either dig into the research or skip to the practical aspects of the book. Personally, I found the research a fascinating complement providing validation to Howell's proposal for barefoot living. It is not meant to be a comprehensive tome of podiatry.

* The book is divided into clear sections for ease of reading. If you are only interested in the application of barefooting to your daily life, then skip to that portion.

* I found the stories of barefooters to be an asset to the book. I took note of how a shoeless enthusiast can live in a footwear-obsessed culture reasonably.

* The chapter about high-heeled shoes was enough to make me ditch my stilettos for good!

* The last 1/3 of the book was by far my favorite, as Howell addressed obstacles and oppositions that those bared feet might elicit from society, family, friends, and businesses. He provides resources for those who want to barefoot in public, including an online community of barefooters, relevant documents, and legal information.

How has The Barefoot Book impacted my daily life? Here are five changes I have made (for the spring/summer/early fall...need some protection in the winter):

o My home is a shoeless, sock-free, and no-slipper zone.

o I ditch my shoes when walking around my neighborhood or taking out the trash.

o I only wear minimalist shoes when training at the gym. I might get brave enough to try a barefoot session in the future.

o I drive barefoot.

o When my hubby's not with me, I go shopping without shoes.

Reading this book reverted me to the joys I experienced as a child while playing outdoors unshod. Splashing in puddles. Squeezing mud through my toes. Climbing the backyard tree into my fort. Wailing after squishing through doggie poo. Blacktop barefooting contests on 100 degree days. Ah the memories. Thanks to Howell, I get to experience a second childhood through baring these feet whenever I want.

An Introduction to Reiki: Healing Energy for Mind, Body and Spirit

An Introduction to Reiki: Healing Energy for Mind, Body and SpiritThis beautiful little book drew my attention when I was "browsing" the natural health shelf at a local bookstore, not looking for anything in particular, just wondering what would call out to me. I knew nothing about Reiki at the time. But I loved what the title addressed: healing energy for mind, body and spirit. That's for me! So I paged through to find a world of beauty: Beauty in the graceful layout and generous number of lovely photographs. Beauty in the simple text that serves as a beginner's guide to Reiki: it's history and principles; the healing treatments involving the endocrine system, seven chakras, emotions and basic hand positions; first aid practices to relieve headache, back pain, stress and other common ailments; special treatments for children, the elderly, pets and plants; Reiki and other therapies such as color and crystal healing.

It truly was an introduction that motivated me to study more, find a Reiki teacher and learn to treat myself and others with Reiki as a spiritual way of life. Though I have since read many other worthwhile books, more detailed or inclusive, I still go back to this beauty for inspiration and guidance.

It's not as informative as it could be. In fact, you're probably better off doing a couple of Google searches for 'reiki' than you would be buying this book, unless you were looking for an outline of the discipline. For what it is, it's not bad.

Scrawny to Brawny: The Complete Guide to Building Muscle the Natural Way

Scrawny to Brawny: The Complete Guide to Building Muscle the Natural WayMany of the reviews on here seem to be from people who are just starting or who gave up on Scrawny to Brawny. I went in determined to do the whole four month program and am proud that I finished it up through the last day.

MONTH ONE

Phase I is the Corrective Phase and, I feel, the best part of the whole book. A series of precise tests show you your weak points and then you spend 2 to 6 weeks correcting them. This is especially important for skinny guys who can seriously hurt themselves if they start squatting loaded barbells without the underlying tissue support. The stretches and small lifts are HARD work and I really felt my ligaments and support muscles getting stronger. I had a "bum knee" which tended to feel weak or have pangs before I started this program and since I finished it, that never happens. Great workouts.

The food portion was far less successful. Similar to others who have mentioned this, I could not humanly consume the amount of calories they wanted each day. On the very first day, I found myself laying on the sofa groaning in gut pain at 9pm because I was so engorged. And I was still supposed to eat another meal before bed. I cut back just enough to make my consumption actually possible without vomiting from then on, but my body fat still soared in this first month. I continued to monitor food amounts each month as directed by their Decision Making Matrix, but it was shocking to start off the program with the first serious paunch I'd ever carried.

MONTH TWO AND A HALF

It was in this month that I strained my back doing one of the lifts and had to take a couple weeks off and start using a lifting belt to continue. Keep in mind that most lifts are illustrated with a single photo and the description of how to execute them assumes some familiarity with the equipment and proper form. I'd taken a weight training class in college and used dumbbells a lot before but strained my lower back lifting a barbell above my head and arching too much. If you're going to sink the significant amount of money that's called for (see below) into this program, you might also plan on a once-a-month meeting with a personal trainer just to assure you're doing everything properly, unless you're versed on full body barbell lifts.

Also, they wanted me to do several chin-ups at a time during my workouts and I could barely do one. There was no guidance on what to do if you're not ready for an exercise yet. Do fewer? Do them halfway? Who knows?

On the plus side, people started making comments about how much bigger I was this month. One co-worker even flattered me that I was getting "huge".

MONTH THREE

This month focuses on building strength for the last big push of muscle enlargement. Good workouts with noticeable growth on my legs and butt.

MONTH FOUR

This was the weakest part of the program. Workouts moved up to four a week to increase growth and left me feeling tired most of the time, even on days off. I'd start workouts not feeling 100% because I was still tired from my last workout. Muscle growth kind of stalled as a consequence, even though I really put everything I had into it and was still eating enough to keep my body fat higher than average.

PLUSES

The general info presented here (less the excess calories) is solid. i learned a lot and appreciated the mix of technical info with practical tips. Although not a lot larger, my legs and butt are more shapely than ever beforeI don't have chicken legs for the first time. And the corrective phase was very effective in building a strong core.

MINUSES

I have a partner who is pretty independent, no pets nor kids, and I work half-time. Still, the shopping, preparation, storage, packing, unpacking, cooking, and washing up after the meals took almost all of my free time. Commute and changing time at a public gym would be added to that for those who don't work out at home. If you have a full-time job, a spouse who wants date nights, kids and a pet, you will find it very, very difficult to complete this program.

Between equipment and extra groceries, I probably spent a couple grand on this program, and that was getting super, lucky deals on used equipment via craigslist. At the end of the program, you're just left with the suggestion to sign up for their expensive online extension rather than any practical plan on how to convert what you've learned into a normal lifestyle.

The diet of almost all lean proteins got very monotonous after a while, even for someone who has spent much of his life in the food business and knows how to make simple food tasty. Before you even think of ordering this book, prepare and eat six meals tomorrow, all of them primarily consisting of lean protein (fat free yogurt, chicken breast, fish, turkey burger, 95% or more lean beef, egg whites...). Protein shakes do not countthose would be on top of your six meals if you had them. Then imagine doing that for four months straight, seven days a week.

Finally, the low amount of carbs in the diet really affected my energy level and mental quickness by month four. I just hadn't had the easily convertible energy of carbs for so long that I felt generally hazy and tired. After one day of going back to my normal eating patterns, I was surprised by a noticeable jump in my alertness, interest in intellectual pursuits, and energy for everyday activities.

RESULTS

My neck, thighs and calves are the same at the end of the program as they were at the beginning (although all did peak larger at different points along the way). My shoulders gained four inches, my chest gained two inches, my waist gained three inches, and my butt and arms both gained an inch. My body fat ended one percentage point higher than when I started.

This is my first review on Amazon, and the only reason I decided to write one on this product was because of how excellent it turned out to be, and because some of the negative reviews that I read might scare some people away from a geniunely useful book.

I've owned it for about two years now, but I've been working out for a lot longer than that for my high school and college athletic careers, with very little to show for it. S2B has dramatically changed the way that I work out-the frequency, the types of exercises, and the volume I incorporate in my workouts. On this program, I went from 6'2 170 pounds to 6'2 195 pounds in about a year on this program, and got vastly more strong. I now do reps with weight that I used to be unable to lift once.

I've seen a few reviews that claim that they have gotten very fat etc. from employing the nutritional advice advocated in the book. There are a number of reasons why this might have happened, but the authors explicitly say that it is an outcome-based nutritional process that you update every two weeks. If you are gaining too much fat--then stop and adjust the diet! Perhaps some of the authors of these comments are not lifters in the true ectomorphic, high-metabolism "hard-gainer" mold or they did not perform the workouts with the proper intensity. I know that if you use the nutrient partitioning/timing that Dr. Berardi recommends, and you eat a lot of nutritious food (aka load up on salads, very lean beef, chicken, fruit) and perform the workouts just as they appear on a consistent basis with hard effort, you will put on muscle and while it is impossible not to put on a little fat with it, in most cases it is barely noticable.

Even if you are not a prototypical ectomorphic hard-gainer, the advice offered in this book is great for building strength and size. The authors advocate a focus on compound lifts using free weights, without a lot of machines or smith machine work that might be good for the ego but aren't good for working the joints or the multiple stabilizing muscles throughout the body. All in all, a solid, informative, entertaining and easy to read book. I would highly recommend it, although the information can be slightly disorganized and the many interesting research references contained in the book are not cited. (There is a book called Njtrient Timing that describes the principles Dr. Berardi employs for sale on Amazon that is also a great book and sheds a little more light on this very interesting and useful subject). Hope this helps!

Absolutely fantastic! The frustration over being an ectomorph is something that only the truely skinny can understand. I had just healed after two sessions at the gym that took me a week to recover. During that time, I reevaluated my weightlifting; what was I doing wrong? I had eaten good foods and trained at least 3 time a week with only a little definition to show for it. Then, I heard about this book. I ordered it not expecting much but, boy, was I wrong. The information in this book specifically directs its focus towards us skinny guys. The emphasis is on compound lifts in the body of the training program but they also use the first four weeks to level out your muscle groups to prevent injury and so you look more balanced (this cured my weak back muscles!).

A nice thing too is that the book devotes half of itself to nutrition. Other books will only give you exercises and have you go on your way which always leads you to thinking what you're doing wrong. They list out how you should eat and when; let it be known that this portion is a major lifestyle change.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their body. So what are you waiting for "skinny"? Get to work!

Oh, this email the author sent out.. offering to send something in exchange for a good review. Shady.

=====================

I want to start this email off by posting something marginally disturbing. Below

is a recent review of our Scrawny to Brawny at Amazon.com.

"I regret buying this book. It is mainly for someone who can survive on

supplements or soup. Most of the routines and guidelines are very hard to do and

you would look silly doing them anywhere people are present! I do no recomend

this book!"

Now, for any of you who actually read the book, you'd know that this reviewer is

likely on crack! Soup? Squats and bench presses are silly to do? Uhm, ok.

Heck, I wonder if this reviewer even read the book or has ever exercised in his

life.

But, I guess everyone is titled to his or her own opinion.

So what's the point of me sending this ONE review to you?

Well, the point is that ignorance, unfortunately, speaks its opinion loud and

often while reason often keeps quite and shakes its head. And not only do

ignorant opinions like this lower the collective intelligence quotient of

mankind, they prevent others from getting any better.

Think about it I've received thousands of emails from S2B readers telling me

how the S2B program changed their life. In fact, right now Im doing an interview

series with our S2B stars, individuals who put in the time, comittment, and

dedication necessary to reap outstanding results. So I know the program is one

of a kind. And I know that most of you reading this think so too.

But, when someone like you looks for info about the S2B book, the get to read our

friend's review above and may not pick up the book, even though they despirately

need it.

Sad.

So here's how I'd like to combat this, with your help, of course:

I'd like you to get on the web and make your rational opinion heard. Post

something positive about the book at amazon.com, amazon.ca, one of the many

message boards online, etc.

And when you do, send me the link to your post. For doing me this favor, I'd

like to send you something. I'm working on a new book called Precision Nutrition

and although it's not yet finished, I'd like to send you a chapter from the book.

The chapter is all about individualizing your nutritional plan based on your body

and your goals. I know you'll love it!

So, make your voice heard post something positive on the web, send the link to

me, and I'll send you that chapter.

And let me leave you with the words of Plato:

The price good men pay for indifference is to be ruled by evil men.

In that it's got all the fundamentals that you need to know hidden away in there, but like the real bible you have to flip back and forth all over the place and have a couple of study aids at hand to make it workable. If you're already au-fait with gym terminology and how to make a variety of meals from specified quantities of lean meats and vegs, then honestly this book is all you need.

As it is pitched at people who've been battling with their frame for a while, I guess this is understandable. But if you're new to this business and are looking for a walk-you-through-it guide then, although this is a good start, keep looking, (unless you want to get the coaching programme* too).

Verdict: Great content, hobbled by the editing. If this book was reworked, it'd be worth a 5.

Yoga, Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the Shaman

Yoga, Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the ShamanIf any of the mystical traditions appeal to you, please invest the small price to own this book. Clearly and concisely this small treasure reviews Patanjali's sutras. Alberto Villoldo makes them poetry to the soul and heart. Each sutra is given a few sentences so beautifully expressed that no more is necessary. To alleviate "disciple-quilt" he states so wonderfully to the advancing student on page xxvii "As Swami Venkatesananda said: "Renounce the self that does the renunciation". With so many New Age books leaving enthusiasts with an almost inability to speak a sentence without self-correction, "Yoga, Power, and Spirit" takes the true student to the heart of the ancient traditions and well beyond the superficial hype of the current, sometimes, very limiting explanation of the metaphysical and sacred. Simply Dr. Villoldo gives us an easily understood adjunct to other sound authors such as Paramahansa Yogananda, Wayne Dyer and Greg Braden. He is in that class!

This book is a portable treasure chest of inspirations. Dr. Villoldo doesn't just reword the old, he renews it for what is needed by today's humanity. It is a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. Read it and let it come alive within you and renew your spirit for the future.

I own four other translations of the Yoga Sutras, but I was able to go through this translation and find passages easily in language that I am using daily for readings in my classes. I teach to newer students and the sutras on breath are easily incorporated into classes and easily understood. I would recommend this for any student of the Sutras as a compliment to any other translations they may be studying.

-Artificial tears (such as most Genteal brands) that contain special non-irritating or disappearing preservatives were not emphasized strongly enough. IMO, such drops are better than those that are entirely without preservatives, because preservatives after all do serve a useful and obvious function. Drops without preservatives often come in single-use vials and are therefore harder to deal with if you want to reuse them for cost effectiveness.

-Alleged homeopathic remedies are presented in a largely neutral or optimistic view, but the scientific fact is that homeopathic drugs are bogus and don't really have any medical effect beyond that of placebo. As such, the book was somewhat complacent towards homeopathy, and I feel that this takes away from proper scientifically or empirically sound remedies.

-There are a few minor typos that seem like they could have easily been caught prior to publication with a bit of extra effort.

-There is no hardcover version.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone experiencing the condition, although if you do read it, it's always better to let this not be the only book you read about the topic. There are other good recent books on the topic that you also may want to read afterwards, both to reinforce the important points and to learn other info.

Board-certified ophthalmologist and founder/director of the Dry Eye Clinic Robert Latkany presents The Dry Eye Remedy: The Complete Guide to Restoring the Health and Beauty of Your Eyes, a guide written especially to help the 77 million Americans (and millions of others worldwide) who suffer from "dry eye", also known as dysfunctional tear syndrome. Often beginning as a minor irritation, dry eye causes lines, wrinkles, bags, and redness, and traditional remedies such as eyelid surgery or eyedrops can potentially make the problem worse. Offering recommendations to improve eye health and appearance without resorting to surgery, The Dry Eye Remedy includes advice for improving one's home environment, proper nutrition, how to set up a "home eye spa", which over-the-counter remedies are harmful, the pros and cons of medical treatments such as hormone therapy or punctal plugs, and a guide to deciding upon the dry eye therapy that works best for the reader. A list of resources and an index round out this solid guide, accessible to readers of all backgrounds, and highly recommended for anyone who cherishes their eyes.

I am so glad I ordered this book. I was having a lot of pain and discomfort and had been to three different eye doctors with no success. After reading The Dry Eye Remedy I felt hopeful that my condition could be treated and managed successfully. Because of the suggestion to stay with the restasis treatment for several weeks, I am virtually symptom free and feel as if I have my life back.

I only wish Dr. Latkany had written this book 10 years ago when I first began noticing symptoms of dry eye related to a thyroid condition and excessive computer use. With his commonsense approach to healing, Dr. Latkany explains how lifestyle changes and medical treatments can work together to combat this modern day plague. Following the excellent suggestions in this book for only a few days, I've already noticed significant improvement.

My eyes have been watering for months. I tried over the counter remedies as well as a Restasis prescription from my doctor. The Restasis worked for a while but never really completely got rid of the problem.

I tried TheraTears mentioned in the book and although it said it would take 4-8 weeks to be effective, I noticed a lot of relief in just three weeks. It's a natural way to go, and I much prefer that to drugs.

I finally think I've found what I was looking for.

The Miracle of Garlic: Practical Tips for Home & Health

The Miracle of Garlic: Practical Tips for Home & HealthGarlic, wonderful garlic. Love it or hate it, many people swear by it for its taste and its health-treating powers. For others, it might not keep a cold away but it sure keeps away the opposite sex.

This book is a light-hearted but detailed look at this purportedly versatile ingredient, ranging from its history and its actual composition to its practical uses in both food and as a natural remedy. Despite being well-written and easy-to-follow, some of the more detailed "technical" observations might be beyond the scope of the average reader, yet things may be easily skipped as required or the book consulted as an "ad hoc" resource. No position is taken as to the health benefits and treatment opportunities ascribed to garlic, that is beyond the scope of this review, but nonetheless the information examined did appear credible, compelling and be something that will be utilised by the reviewer.

Reading through the text was an "eye opener" in any case and one feels a lot more informed as a result. Those fearful of the smell of garlic can also find solace and some tips as to how one can reduce the impact of garlic breath! You might be forgiven for assuming this is just a "new age"-type of book, promoting an alternative medicine viewpoint. It is a lot more than that. Certainly at its price it is an affordable "single issue" book that provides a lot more information about a very versatile ingredient. For that alone, we like it.

Treat it more as an information source than a recipe source and you won't feel cheated. You will be a lot more informed and it may have a positive effect on your culinary use of garlic. You might also notice some health benefits too.

I'm not sure what I expected going into this book, but it was way more than I thought it would be. If you want a book that pretty much covers anything you might ever want to know about garlic, this would be it. I will admit, portions of it were hard to read, being very dry, technical facts. There are some recipes, but not many. Honestly, most of the recipes did not appeal to me or were just basic recipes that you don't even need a recipe for. (Pasta with garlic and oil? Eggs with green garlic shoots? Who needs a recipe for those?!) However, there is everything you want or need to know about growing, preserving and using your garlic here, including a detailed breakdown of all the different medical uses. I'm looking forward to hopefully being able to put in a garden this year for the first time in a long time, and I was wanting to grow garlic, so this will be very helpful for that, and I love the home remedy section. The book is worth it by far for those two portions.

I received a digital copy of this book from Watkins Publishing Ltd to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
