Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension

Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle TensionI almost didn't buy this book because some of the reviews are so negative...but I'm glad I did anyway. A few points:

1. This method absolutely works...I say this after studying karate for 4 years (hundreds of kicks, stretching that included pouring water on the floor and having someone push down on your back, staying in stretched positions for up to an hour, etc..) yoga, stretch machines, standard stretch routines. Through all this, my stretch increased very little. I couldn't even sit on the floor with crossed legs without discomfort. My karate instructor used to say I had the flexibility of a rock. Pavel's method works. Get the book! The concepts are simple, but revolutionary. A few more points:

2. There is enough information and stretching routines in the book to last for years. I don't understand the reviews that say there is not enough info in the book, too many pictures, etc...I appreciated the fact that I could quickly go throught the book and get right into the stretching.

3. There is another reviewer who outlines all of the potentially harmful stretches, based on his assessment as a doctor. However, all of the stretches he talks about are in the advanced stretching section of the book; they are extreme exercises, that Pavel clearly states are not for beginners.

4. Appearances can be deceiving...for example I was experiencing slight lower back pain from one routine and then I went back and read how to do the exercise, and realized I was overstretching, not controlling my breathing and tension as described in the book. In spite of the clear, "simple" format of the book, it is rich in information, that must be read carefully.

5. One last point: this book is for those who need to get to the next level. (I can't believe someone recommended Anderson's "granny" stretch book over this one; give me a break) Whether to reach top levels of fitness, martial arts study, rock climbing, etc...I'm thinking of someone who is into total fitness.)

On the other hand, it's also worth reading for the weekend athlete, only because the knowledge can help one prevent injuries and avoid harmful stretching methods.

Disclaimer: this is not a cheerleader review for Pavel. I have no connection with him whatsoever, just a very appreciative reader. Get the book!

I loved this book when I first read it, probably because I was uneducated about stretching. Pavel introduced this stretching technique which "instantly allowed me to touch my toes". It's quite simple, it's called Proprioceptive-Neuro-Muscular-Facilitation. PNF is found in many of the basic physical fitness texts. It is not revolutionary, it was not discovered "on the other side of the Iron Curtain", and it is not something worth $34.95 of your hard earned money. The only contribution Pavel has is showing you how to do PNF yourself. So you don't have to spend the money, I'll tell you right now: Go to a decent stretch, flex the muscle(s) being stretched. Hold your breath to increase the intensity of the flex, and then release the breath and the flex at the same time. Boom, you're done.

Also, this book does not have any discussion on program formation, stretch selection, or stretch order. All of these should be incorporated into a text on stretching. It's worth it for fun if you already know what you're talking about. Otherwise, there are plenty of other stretching books that are much more worthwhile and are definitely more economical.

That said, nobody is as fun or easy to read as the Evil Russian. And he does cover some interesting theories on muscle tension.

All of Pavel's books including Relax Into Stretch have excellent

information which it hard to find else where. However Pavel never invented the exercises nor he came up the research himself. However it is one of better stretching books in the market and I have got better results in my stretches with information found in Pavel's book. The main downside of this

book and other Pavel's books is that his books including Relax Into Stretch are overpriced. That's why I put a three stars on this one. For those whom want to be able to do full front split or side split, I recommend Stretching Scientifically by Thomas Kurz over Relax

Into Stretch by Pavel Tsatsouline for a better run for your money.

Read Best Reviews of Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension Here

Like all the author's books, "Relax into Stretch" is loaded with conflicting interpretation, false promises, and greedy solicitation for selling misleading publications. Here, the author criticizes "conventional stretching", that is commonly practiced in America, as dangerous and ineffective modality that intends to elongate tissues over years. The author claims that his soviet approach relaxes the nervous system like upgrading the muscle's software to stretch and that those changes occur immediately through educating the stretch reflex. He exaggerates by promising to achieve a level of flexibility that is "uncommon in our species", within months, page 138. Yet, the entire book does nothing but describes conventional stretching.

"Stay the hell away from them!" and "do not stretch the damn thing!" is his macho advice, forbidding the practice of stretching the ligaments, page 39. He claims that stretching the ligaments has no athletic benefits, and that it scars and weakens the ligaments through creating micro-tears that predispose to plastic deformities and severe injuries. He will soon contradict himself by describing many stretch drills that do nothing but stretch the ligaments, the tendons, and the muscles, as follows:

(1) The Road Kill Split, page 128, and the Cossacks severely stretch the medial collateral ligaments of the knees.

(2) The Side Split, page 131, severely stretches the Iliofemoral ligaments of the hip joints.

(3) The Modified Reverse Triangle and the Side Stretch severely stretch the spinal ligaments.

(4) The Reverse Cossack notoriously stretches the lateral collateral ligaments of the knees and the spinal ligaments.

You can go on and on through all the stretch drills to find out that ligamentous stretching is a common and welcome practice, about which the author is confused.

The major drawback with these superficial publications, which the author excessively reproduces and brags about, is the hasty display of information. For example, this author's books have no chapters, but rather an arbitrary aggregation of anecdotes referred to soviet academicians, scientists, and experts. Each topic spans a page or two, followed by a table of summary that occupies a full page. Thus, the author assumes that the reader has to have a summary for every two pages.

Although the book presents thirty-seven stretching drills, starting with "Toe Touch" and ending with the "Side Split", it does not describe how to structure a safe and reasonable way of incorporating the drills in a workout. It only tells you to exercise two to three times a week and it is up to you to figure out how to structure your training. That is a serious flaw in a do-it-yourself book. In a safe gym environment, you would learn what to start with and what not, such that you avoid life-long injuries. For example, the book drills start with "toe touch" drill, followed by "spine compression" drill, then "the Improved Cobra" drill. These drills involve standing in the first, hanging up in the second, and laying prone in the third. That is completely bizarre way of structuring any training sequence. In addition, the author repeatedly requires that you use his other four books: Power To the People, Super Joints, Bullet-Proof Abs, and Fast & Loose! The four books could be easily squeezed in a single brochure and will still constitute a mediocre source of information for any serious training.

In complete incongruence with standard books on yoga and stretch, this book lacks progressive description of the execution of drills. The figures of the books are labeled hastily and in sloppy manner. Some errors in execution show the lack of experience of the author about what he claims to know best. For example, in the "Toe Touch" drill, page 49, the author condemns getting up from hyper-flexed, or rounded, back with straight knees. He contends that one has to semi-squat in order to avoid serious back injury. While that is true in the case of lifting, it entirely defeats the purpose of the back stretching that requires rounding each vertebra, as long as there is no external weight on the torso and that performer is alert, warmed up, and knows what "toe touching" is supposed to achieve.

So far, this is by far the best book by Pavel that I've read.

"Relax Into Stretch" gives a much better presentation of the principles and practice of his stretching philosophy, and is better constructed for the beginner and for those wanting to know how to structure a progressive stretching plan... than Pavel's prior "Beyond Stretching" book did.

I think this book is still a bit heavy on amusement and a bit light on scientific details, but it is easy to understand and based on sound, verifiable principles. With some careful practice, a person could benefit a lot from this material, but a beginner without some prior knowledge should go slowly at first.

However, this book does a poor job of showing variations for people that need specific help in different ranges of motion, or who are particularly inflexible or who have had joint injuries.

I got my copy of "Relax Into Stretch" for half price, which I feel is about right for the amount of material you get.

The "Relax Into Stretch" video is nice for comparison, and to see various movements demonstrated, but is also light on content and explanation. I think the book has more to offer than the video if you are a reader, but the video is cheaper and will get you started if you aren't.

For a more reasonably-priced source of absolutely excellent material on PNF and Isometric stretching with loads of variations and detailed explanation, check out "Stretching & Flexibility" by Kit Laughlin, or "Overcoming Neck & Back Pain" by Kit Laughlin.

The Principles of Unarmed Combat

The Principles of Unarmed CombatFirst off, I want to emphasize that this is the most detailed book I have ever read on the specific principles and factors which make up unarmed combat. It is also not a book you would want to read for recreation and pleasure. This is not a criticism of the book. This text was written like a college level text book. It has ten sections and over 50 chapters, as well as 351 pages in its 11 by 81/2 size format. In fact, it is impossible to intellectually absorb the amount of detail given in each section without studying this book with the same intensity you would give in a college physiology and kinesiology course. Though many life time students of the martial arts may be familiar with many of the concepts and principles, this book makes you think even more deeply on any preconceived ideas you may have on physical combat. This book also explodes some of the many myths concerning the value of certain martial art practices. In this respect, it deals with the reality of combat.

The ten sections in this tome include: The basic principles, body posture, movement and footwork, striking, defending against strikes, transitions, takedowns, ground fighting, miscellaneous topics and the psychology of combat. The illustrations are clear drawings showing the principles of a technique; however, in my opinion there should have been even more illustrations for this size text. However, this is the only real criticism I have of this amazing book.

If you truly desire to understand all the complex factors involved in unarmed combat, you will want to make this book part of your martial art and self-defense library. There is a store house of knowledge contained on the pages of this excellent book.

In conclusion, if you are a serious and dedicated student of any type of physical combat system you will want to study, and not just read this book.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Monadnock Defensive Tactics System)

Well I guess I should start off this review with a bit of my background so that you can fully understand and appreciate the depth of the review I am about to give on this book.

I have been a practicing martial artist for the past three decades and an instructor for 25 of those thirty years. I currently hold the rank of 4th degree black belt in the martial art of Taekwondo, not the sport version, as well as a 4th degree black belt in Karate. I have also spent a sizable portion of the past 15 years focusing more on self-defense and combatives techniques including; Krav Maga, knife combatives, firearms training, etc. During these past three decades I have worked in a variety of violence prone professions such as; eight years as a law enforcement officer, three years working at a state run mental hospital (and No, I wasn't a patient), worked various security jobs as a bouncer in various bars, nightclubs, concerts, and strip clubs. So in a nutshell, I have been around the block a few times and have seen more than my fair share of the dregs of society and the horrible things that people do to one another. And with that final thought, on with the review.

NOTE: This is a book that focuses on the more important aspect of principles and concepts over actual techniques, which as any knowledgeable proponent of the martial arts and self-defense will tell you is vastly more important than a particular punch, strike, kick, or joint technique.

This is one of the most thoroughly thought out and detailed books that I have ever seen concerning the various principles involved in various aspects of martial arts and unarmed combat. And while not perfect, I would have to say that it rates on a scale of 1 to 100 as probably 90% complete, and I would have rated it even higher had the author included a lot more illustrations and photographs to enhance the literary portion of this book instead of just having the few and sparsely placed computer images of a human body. So with that one small glitch in an otherwise outstanding book I feel that EVERYONE who is involved in the martial arts and self-defense field should own a copy of this book. It literally is that well done!

The author breaks the contents of this book down into ten major sections with numerous sub-sections under each section. Those ten sections are as follows:

1. The Basic Principles

2. Body Posture

3. Movement and Footwork

4. Striking

5. Defending Against Strikes

6. Transitions

7. Takedowns

8. Ground Fighting

9. Miscellaneous Topics

10. The Psychology of Combat

This book comes in at well over 300 pages and it is a full 300 plus pages of very sound information that can not be read in one sitting and it not intended to be read once and then put on the shelf to collect dust. The author fully intended to have the reader take this book and read one section at a time, numerous times, in order to slowly process the information and then incorporate it into your existing training regime. Like I stated earlier, I have been doing this for three decades and I learned a lot reading this book. Some of the information was new to me, while the vast majority was known, but not in as much detail as I previously thought I knew it. While there were some bits of information that I tended not to agree with completely, although that was far and few between.

The information provided in this book is applicable to anyone practicing any martial art or combative system anywhere in world. Granted some of the information may be more pertinent to your particular discipline than others, but it is all sound and all relevant even if it doesn't all directly address your particular style. For example; the sections on ground fighting and grappling may not be of rabid interest to a Taekwondo practitioner, but that doesn't mean that the information isn't relevant, especially if the Taekwondo practitioner suddenly found himself up against a wrestler or BJJ fighter.

I highly recommend this book without reservation or hesitation!

While this book may be a bit loaded with biochemistry for the tastes of the average reader, it is an excellent book if you want to understand how the brain works best and what kinds of supplements, vitamins and nutients will help keep it functioning well. It is a good review for anyone in the medical field too, especially those wanting to provide a balanced integrative health approach to their family or general practice.

The most important point is preventing degeneration of brain function over time, and while it will appear complex at first, attempting to understand and apply it could save your brain and keep you out of a long term care facility in the future.

The Comfort of Home for Alzheimer's Disease: A Guide for Caregivers

The Comfort of Home for Alzheimer's Disease: A Guide for CaregiversI got this book to review a while back and it took some time to get through. Not because it's a bad book at all, but because it has a lot of information that kept me busy online researching.

My dad has Parkinson's Disease induced dementia. It is different from AD in how it affects the brain physically but the symptoms are almost identical. This book was very helpful in it's advice; a lot of it I knew already but some was new.

This book is divided into 3 parts: Getting Ready, Day by Day, and Additional Resources

Getting Ready explains how to prepare for patients with AD, such as financial help, legal help, how to pay for care and how to prepare your home.

Day by Day explains how to set up schedules, avoiding burnout, understanding behaviors of AD patients, etc.

This is a good book for anyone who is caring for loved ones with AD or dementia. The amount of online help advice in this book is incredible.

It is the desire and preference of most elderly men and women to live out the last years of their lives in the comfort and familiarity of their homes or the homes of their children. It is almost always the preferred option, delaying the necessity of placement into an assisted living facility or a nursing home. Specifically designed as a guide to caregivers of Alzheimer patients, "The Comfort Of Home For Alzheimer's Disease" is the collaborative work of Maria M. Meyer, Mary S. Mittleman, Cynthia Epstein, and Paula Derr intended to help aging men and women to remain safely at home for as long as possible. The focus of "The Comfort Of Home For Alzheimer's Disease" is to help caregivers understand the difficult behaviors that arise from the affliction of Alzheimers, to make the home safe and comfortable, to reduce the chance of frustration-born conflict and make everyday activities easier for their charges, for dedicated caregivers to take care of themselves with practical self-care tips, to work with the health care providers in behalf of their charges, and to decide when and if nursing home placement is appropriate. Of special note is the necessity for understanding end-of-life health care needs and the necessary documents to guide caregivers when the time comes. Thoroughly 'user friendly', "The Comfort Of Home For Alzheimer's Disease" should be considered an essential study for anyone charged with providing care for a loved one suffering from Alzheimers. Also very highly recommended from Care Trust Publications is the companion title "The Comfort Of Home For Chronic Lung Disease: A Guide For Caregivers" (9780978790318, $24.95) by Maria M. Meyer, Paula Derr, and Mary E. Gilmartin.

My maternal grandfather died of Alzheimer's. As he was going through the later stages it was hard for my grandmother and mother to deal with the extreme changes in memory and ability. This book would have been a wonderful resource for them to refer to. It takes you through all of the steps of dealing with this awful disease, from early stage identification to the difficult decision of when to put your loved one in a nursing home.

It includes dozens of resources where you can learn more about the disease, find local support groups and learn how to care for the family member with AD. It also talks about your own well being, pointing out that in order to provide the best care possible to your loved one, you need to be in top shape, mentally and emotionally. It goes into great detail on little things that you might not consider. It would serve as an excellent reference for anyone caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease.

Although I don't have to deal with it yet, there's no telling when AD will strike again in my family. If it does, this book will be an invaluable resource.

I wish I had this book a few years ago. My partner's family had a relative who was living with Alzheimer's Disease. It can be confusing for both the family and the patient. This book explains everything that can be done to make living with and caring for an Alzheimer's patient easier and better. The advice encompasses everything from writing living trusts to daily activities you can engage with them. However, it is good at letting you know that every patient is different in their needs and the stages of Alzheimer's are not identical. Even if you aren't living with an Alzheimer's patient, it would be a good book to help you understand what that patient needs for their everyday as well as long term care.

Making Transparent Soap: The Art Of Crafting, Molding, Scenting & Coloring

Making Transparent Soap: The Art Of Crafting, Molding, Scenting & ColoringThis is an essential guide for anyone wishing to make transparent soap. The author guides you seamlessly through the complex soap making process with step-by-step instructions color photos & a very helpful troubleshooting section.

The book starts out detailing the properties, advantages & disadvantages of each soap ingredient. Then safety precautions & equipment selection are outlined, including selecting a mold.

Two methods for making the soap & 8 vegetable-based soap recipes follow. Conveniently, complete instructions for modifying these & formulating your own original recipes are included as well. Adding dyes & fragrances is also discussed. Several essential oil fragrance formulas are included.

I was very impressed that the book included both instructions & complete plans in for making labor-saving tools including a square wooden soap mold, an adjustable-wire bar cutter & drill mixer. The extensive resource list including websites was also invaluable.

I bought this book for myself. I read it over several times and became very familiar with the process before attempting anything. The book is extremely informative and well-written. Very easy to understand. The description of ingredients and the purpose of each one was very useful. Beautiful pictures. Nice sections on coloring, fragrancing & moulding. Great info. on where ingredients can be purchased. However, even though I followed the directions for the alcohol/lye method to the letter, I still had a disastrous first experience. My mixture, simmering on lowest possible heat, boiled up and oozed out the sides, despite the tightly cinched bungee holding the sheets of plastic in place. My inner pot ended up floating on boiling soap foam. I managed to save the remainder that was left in the pot and finished the simmering proccess directly on the burner (after cleaning the outside of the pot thoroughly). I estimated the amount of sugar/water solution and glycerin to add to it. Although I can't vouch for the amounts of any of the ingredients at this point, the stuff that I did save managed to come out very well. Looks pretty, smells great and lathers beautifully. I'm just lucky my stove top didn't burst into flames considering the flamable alcohol that oozed over the sides of the pot. I believe next time I try this (soon) I will ajust the method to what I consider safe and hope that it works well. If you plan on making this soap, please be sure to have an extinguisher close by. I'm not sure why I had such a horrible time with this method, but I'd hate for it to be worse for anyone else.

Essential Abs: An Intense 6-Week Program (Men's Health Peak Conditioning Guides)

Essential Abs: An Intense 6-Week ProgramI purchased about 10 books from Amazon on abs in order to compare them. This one is a rather simplistic book. It's like an enlarged Men's Health magazine article. If all you want is a book that tells you exactly what to do for a specific time period, you'll be better off with The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs, which has more information as well as a DVD. Here's my conclusion from comparing books...

If You Want to Trim Your Waistline: You can't trim your waistline without losing fat, and you can't lose fat around your waist without losing it everywhere (focusing on a muscle group like the abdominal muscles doesn't burn fat in that location, just a little bit of fat from everywhere on the body). So, if you want to trim your waistline, skip the ab workout books and go with a good, proven overall weight loss and fitness book like Bill Phillips' Body for Life. The Abs Diet is a similar program, but like all the Men's Health publications, it advertises a 6-week transformation, which is just a little unrealistic. Plan on more like 12-24 weeks to see really noticeable changes if you are fat.

If You Want Sculpted Six-Pack Abs: If you are overweight at all, see above--you can't get a six pack while you're overweight, and you can't lose abdominal fat by doing an ab workout, so go for overall fitness. However, if you are already lean, see below.

If You Want to Strengthen or Build Your Ab Muscles: If you're trying to improve for work, play, or rehab, you might consider the following books: The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs Deluxe DVD Edition contains decently up-to-date information and tells you exactly what to do and when to do it, based on a six-week fitness course. If you're looking for a similar book with more information, you can choose from The Complete Book of Abs or The Complete Book of Core Training. The Complete Book of Abs (1998) is a little out of date in terms of its dietary/nutritional recommendations, but it focuses more on exercises that develop the external abdominal muscles (the ones you see in a six-pack), including lots of variations on leg lifts, bicycle motion, and sit-ups. It will also give you more resources for creating your own program, and, if that's what you want to do, go with this one instead of The Body Sculpting Bible. The Complete Book of Core Training (2006) focuses more on the functional body core, including internal abdominal muscles, legs, etc., and includes more trendy exercises using medicine balls, exercise balls, yoga, etc. A different sort of book is Stronger Abs and Back (1997), which was written before the current fad of selling "core training," but contains the elements of core training because it gives good functional sports-focused advice. Its dietary recommendations are out of date, but it recommends a 24-week workout plan, which is much more realistic than the 6-week plans advocated by many of the other books.

If You Have Back Pain: See your doctor, and if he prescribes abdominal/core strengthening, see above.

My one-book recommendation: Body for Life.

My two-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back.

My three-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs.

My four-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs + The Abs Diet.

Hope this helps!!

I am 5'9" 200, not a thin guy. Used a low carb diet to lose 10 pounds along with this program and in 2 weeks could see real results. My waist is smaller and I see definition in my abdominal area for the first time since my military college days, 35 years ago. The exercises are very well-described, not unusually difficult, and can be done on a living room floor with no equipment. You feel and see the results immediately. I usually complete the third level in 15 minutes. I have never written an online review before but was so pleased with this book and the results I felt that I should. For me it was money well-spent.

Probably you wont get ripped in just six weeks, but from my experience I can tell you that the program really works, so in six weeks you will increase your abdominal strength and resistance, and of course you will certainly loss belly fat and get a better definition.

If you are interested in a more comprehensive coverage of ABS exercises and workouts, you may want to check "The Complete ABS" by the same author.

Having already achieved the first four chapters of the book may make my opinion biased. That written, it's a great guide, with lots of photos, a well-directed course toward progressively more advanced workouts, and tips on whether you are doing the exercises correctly and how to make adjustments if you are missing the mark. Having been through a serious back injury and a very seriously fractured foot (AND NEITHER WERE FUN!), I read LOTS of rehab and exercise materials. Essential Abs is definitely the best excercise pub I've read. And, as a lanky female, it's been a stitch to read a book written for men. A gentleman at my health club recommended it to me -and, he definitely looks in great shape. So, you just received a book review and a woman's view on whether Essential Abs is worth putting your money where your stomach is!

I was a Teaching Fellow in Physiology in graduate school, did additional graduate study in biochemistry and at one time worked as a personal trainer. I am also someone who has had my share of injuries, including a herniated disk. When I reviewed this book, I did so through this lens and as one who has some direct knowledge of the area being explored.

In my opinion, this book is a REAL jewel. It is short, but it covers a progressive, logical and safe routine for building outstanding abs. In addition, it includes good information about combining abdominal training with aerobics, weight lifting and reasonable diet tips.

In addition to the above, the book is written in an easy to follow, upbeat manner. It is encouraging and provides enough detail on how to do exercises properly. This is probably the only abs book you will ever need.

Two other books that may be of interest are: Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief and Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body. I recommend the former for people with back issues and the latter for people who want more in-depth coverage of weight training.

Overall... this book is a GREAT place to start a fitness program that is easy to impliment, stick to and get good results. In my opinion, it's all you need to get started and it will take you fairly far by itself. There isn't any hype here, just good information packed into a small package.
