Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your Sinuses (Harvard Medical School Guides)

Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your SinusesThis is a good book if you know nothing at all about your sinus condition. However, I had already gathered much of this information from good websites. There were a couple of interesting things that I wasn't aware of, but the bottom line is, how is this going to help me? Is it going to give me new ideas so I can get better? Unfortunately, it didn't. If you've already tried nasal irrigations, decongestants, steroid sprays, antihistamines, possible allergy shots and antibiotics, then you know all you can know about treating sinusitis without surgery. If you are facing surgery, then maybe the chapters on what to expect will be useful.

The information is coherent and well organized. Yes, it is possible one can glean much of the information from other sites on the Internet. However, doing so would take twice as long as reading the book and one can never tell when they are receiving advice from a real doctor or a quack. Everything in this book is backed by a Clinical Professor at Harvard. Not only does that offer peace of mind, it also gives you an upper hand when trying to get the correct medication from your doctor. "I read in this book by Ralph B Metson from Harvard..." goes a lot farther than "I read on an Internet site somewhere..." I wish I could have read this book years ago.

Of note:

The recommended salt usage for nasal wash is a bit high. Some prefer it that high, I recommend doing Internet research and trying less salt at first, ESPECIALLY if you notice a stinging sensation. Never, ever try to force water through a clogged nose!!

The explanation of Zicam in the book is not quite correct. Zicam is *marketed* as homeopathy, but it is not really homeopathic; it actually contains Zinc. Homeopathy is just water.

Also, I was told Atrovent (in that form) was taken off the market.

I picked up a copy of this book because I have sinusitis. I found the book to be extremely helpful in understanding my problems and in instructing what to do about them. It is written in a way that anyone can understand. You don't have to be a doctor to get what the book is talking about, but it didn't seem so basic that it was patronizing like some medical books for non-doctors. I also liked that it was easy to skip around and I didn't feel like I had to read it from beginning to end. Each chapter stood on its own as helpful in and of itself. I would recommend this book to anyone who has sinus problems.

The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses is a valuable resource, which is written in easy-to-understand language that details various sinus conditions, including ones that might seem like sinusitis but are not, and numerous strategies for treating them. In addition, discussions of treatments include helpful thoughts on various methods of sinus surgery, how to prepare for surgery if needed, and what to expect.

I appreciate how, on pages 162-163, Dr. Metson and Mr. Mardon cite empty nose syndrome (ENS) as a "troubling phenomenon," which results from an overly aggressive surgery of the turbinates (inner nasal mucus-producing tissue that performs many critical functions). The description of ENS is accurate, and I am grateful it is noted as a complication of surgery, as not all sinus self-help books acknowledge ENS.

When discussing treatments, The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses mentions zicam, which is the oral spray form of zinc. The authors note while zinc has been shown to reduce the duration of a cold, particularly when used at the onset of symptoms, it must be sprayed into the nose every four hours for one to two weeks to be effective. A word of caution, though, which also should be highlighted, is that spraying high concentrations of zicam in the nose can lead to burning and destruction of olfactory epithelium, the nerve cells responsible for smell. Consequently, some users of zicam have permanently lost their sense of smell.

This book definitely has much useful information on sinusitis from a highly reputable source. It is a great reference book for sinus sufferers.

This is the most comprehensive book I've read on sinuses. It is written so that the average person can understand what goes on inside your sinuses, what the problem areas are, but most importantly, what can be done to get relief. I was also very fortunate to have had surgery by Dr. Metson. Each day I continue to improve and feel like a brand new person. This book is a must for anyone who is suffering. I HIGHLY recommend getting this book.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Empty Nesters: 101 Stories about Surviving and Thriving When the Kids Lea

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Empty Nesters: 101 Stories about Surviving and Thriving When the Kids Leave HomeI have had the honor of reviewing many of the 'Chicken Soup,' books and I have never been disappointed; I don't say that lightly. They all have been great reads, funny, encouraging and well worth my time. However, this one definitely stuck a cord within me, and it was perhaps one of the best I have read thus far.

I am one that has been through the empty nest and it is not always a very comfortable place to be. Loneliness and the constant feeling that something (or someone) is missing fills the home, but take heart, this too will pass.

Inside the pages of this delightful book we are treated to story after story of parents that have come upon that page in this lives. The stories are often laugh-out-loud funny, heart-touching, and practical. Just about every emotion is shown in the different tales that are shared. They are short stories, easy to read, and will leave you with the feeling that you are not alone. I liked the shortness of the stories because you will be able to read one or more a day and have a daily dose of encouragement.

It truly is a great help to know that others, from all walks of life, have experienced exactly what you are, and have made it through fine. You will be encouraged by these words and go away with the attitude that life goes on, and perhaps it is your time to shine once again. Well done. Highly recommended.

I remember well the lonlieness of those first few years of being an empty nester. Any empty nester will relate to many of the sweet and touching stories that parents share in this wonderful book. It is such a great read for any parent anticipating or having gone through this season of life since it is always so helpful to know you are not alone in your feelings and reactions. I truly believe in mentoring from your own experience, and that is what this wonderful book accomplishes. It would make a great gift for anyone you know who is either struggling or enjoying the inevitable time in every parent's life.

And before we know it a new generation fills our home with grandchildren and the nest isn't empty anymore!

Kudos to the authors that took the time to compile this precious book.

Empty Nesters is a collection of poignant stories about parents dealing with a wide range of emotions when their children leave home--numbness, heartache, loneliness, and even exhilaration. The timing of its publication couldn't have been better for me because I'm coping with my own empty nest. I could relate to other parents who faced empty bedrooms, empty laundry baskets, empty cars. Wanda Quist wrote, "The house is so quiet I hear the ice maker drop cubes into its bin." Another mother sends so many care boxes to her son that they're stacked all the way to the ceiling in his dorm room. But the book is not just about mothers. Fathers, sons and daughters also tell their stories, which gives the reader a broader perspective.

Empty Nesters is organized into sections with titles such as "First Flights," "Under Our Wings and in Our Hearts," "Out on a Limb," and "Ruffled Feathers." The stories are each just two or three pages. Sprinkled throughout are light poems and so-true cartoons. I laughed aloud at parents staring at a phone waiting for their child to call, kids who come home on weekends with tons of laundry for Mom to wash, and a father imagining turning an empty bedroom into a pool room while his wife laments that the child has grown up.

For those parents who are anticipating their empty nest and those who are dreading it, Empty Nesters will help them realize they're not alone, that this time of life is just another inevitable stage that every parent survives. As Patricia Cena Evans wrote, "It was time for me to welcome this next season of life and move on." Yes, I thought. Me too!

Empty-nest syndrome is the name given to a psychological condition that can affect a man or a woman around the time that one or more of their children leave home. This phrase is used to encapsulate the feelings of sadness and loss that many parents experience when their children no longer live with them or need day-to-day care.

"Empty Nesters, 101 stories about surviving and thriving when the kids leave home"is a delightful book that discusses, as the title suggests, various stories by the different authors on facing and coping with the empty nest syndrome.

The stories are inspiring, touching, and amusing. It will help guide the parents who are going through this process to rediscover themselves, theirs needs, and each other.

The empty nest does not have to be an end of a story, but a new beginning for the parents as well as for the children, where everyone will face new challenges, achieve personal growth, and improve their personal and interpersonal lives.

Empty nest is about loss, but it is also about rebirth and about re-experiencing life and the children who left us in a different light.

Finally, the stories in this book will inspire the readers as well as educate them on managing and reclaiming their lives. It will provide them with psychological and emotional support by edifying the process of coping with separation, and by helping them realize that their current experience of loss is universal, because many others like them have already embarked on this same journey and survived it successfully.

The Empty Nesters Soul certainly rings true. Why? because the empty nest experience is both wonderful and heart-wrenching at the same time. The real question is, "How do we respond?" Life is always full of opportunity, and for the empty nester, what we do next has the potential to be redemptive in so many ways.

When Cancer Hits Home: Cancer Treatment and Prevention Options for Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, and Other Common Types4.5 stars

Dr Patrick Maguire has written a superb book about cancer, his chapter 'Take The Ball By The Horns' is particularly significant. In reducing your risks of cancer, you need to take an aggressive role in prevention. You can learn all about cancer, what you can do to reduce the risk of being diagnosed with cancer, and how to help that someone, if it is not you, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Get all the information you can, be well read and face the situation head on, filled with some control. Dr Maguire says 'Take The Ball By The Horns', and that is not a misprint, is a big part of learning about and dealing with cancer.

When you are diagnosed with cancer, the loss of control that most of us feel can be overwhelming. Many of us look to our physicians to tell us the best path. However, if those decisions can be made together, you, your family and the physician with the best knowledge and outcomes before you, some of that control is back. I was fortunate to have my cancer diagnosed in a facility that has a Cancer Center. I would recommend that for everyone. Everything you might need is in the same center. I was also part of a Decision Making Center with my surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist. You are putting your trust and your life at times in the hands of the medical oncologist who will be the leader of your team. You will meet with the oncologist at least twice a month and maybe more often for a year or more. You want someone who you like and trust. I knew from the first page that Dr Maguire is the kind of oncologist I would want. He is very forthright, a great sense of humor, knowledgeable and speaks in patient language. A person remembers 40% of what physicians tell them in the office. Once you hear cancer, you may not hear another word. I believe the best informed people may have the best course of treatment. They know what to expect and this book can be very helpful for them and their family.

Patrick Maguire gives us a cancer history in his family, which gives us the title of the book, 'When Cancer Hits Home'. It is one thing to be an oncologist and another to have cancer in your familycancer tends to even the playing field. Dr Maguire has written this book in 3 parts.

The first part is how to reduce your cancer risk. 90% of people with cancer are the first one in their family. It is important to know your risks and how to reduce them. Make decisions wisely, avoid tobacco, try to avoid viruses that can cause cancer and be careful in the sun. Try to have a healthy menu, exercise frequently, and see your physician for preventive medicine.

Part Two discusses the treatment options for the 20 most common cancers. Dr Maguire provides a case history for each type of cancer, the risks and causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, staging of the cancer, treatment and the personal outcome for the person with that particular cancer. This is so well done, by giving us a real person's story, it is easier to comprehend all the issues. Dr Maguire has written in language that is easily understood. Some of the people did well and some did not. He talks about the decision making process, and the discussions of treatment and the final outcome.

Part Three covers all of the references and resources that Dr Maguire used in writing this book. Chapter by chapter resources, which is very helpful, if you wanted to look up a particular reference for more information.

One of the most important aspects of cancer care is the support of family and friends. Dr Maguire does not specifically state this, but it is inferred. If you do not have someone to talk with, to share your fears and your good news, there are professional people waiting to help you. Every cancer center has a myriad of people, and their services should be offered with every visit. If you do have cancer, your family will be a great source of support, but they will also need a support network. Cancer is not a disease to fight alone.

I would recommend this book as a resource for every physician's office or waiting room. Every household would do well to have this resource. We all know someone with cancer, within our family or not. It is important to be well informed. I remember someone asking me what I did wrong to 'get' my cancer. No one wants to be so misinformed, but we need to realize there are people who know very little, and we need to expect some foolish questions or suggestions. When we are well informed we carry that knowledge to every part of our lives.

Highly Recommended. prisrob 03-08-11

Well written. Easy to read. This book is full of answers to those of us with so many questions on such an overwhelming topic.

Dr. Maguire translates cancer treatment and prevention options into a language easily understandable. I highly recommend this book as a family members guide to cancer treatment.

If you and your loved ones have avoided cancer, may God continue to bless you. For those of us who have had cancer enter our lives we have learned the struggle involved in fighting it, and some of us have loved ones who have finally lost the battle. I remember when my father was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme I had never heard the term before. I wish I still didn't know it. The hospital gave us some basic literature but I wanted to know more but it was surprisingly hard to find.

Cancer has struck my family several different times over the decades. In some ways it is the result of avoiding death from accident, bad food, bad water, and infectious disease that killed our ancestors at younger ages. Dr. Patrick Maguire provides us with a terrific primer that I recommend you get on your bookshelf and refer to as needed. He gives us several chapters and what we can do to minimize our cancer risk and why things like diet, exercise, avoiding tobacco and environmental carcinogens can help. But there are certain genetic tendencies to cancer that can trigger and cancer enters your life no matter how fastidious your health maintenance.

He also looks at the 20 most common categories of cancer (and many more sub-types). He uses patient stories to show how the cancer manifested itself, was diagnosed, and how the treatments used. At the back of the book you will find a chapter by chapter list of references and sources you can use for further study and reading. This can be very useful when, like me, you are anxious to find out what is happening to your loved one.

This is a valuable basic resource. Dr. Maguire has the knack of being able to explain things to us in plain English without papering over the realities and difficulties we face. But without making things seem insurmountable. This is a real gift.

I hope you never experience the cancer struggle. But if you do, I hope you already have this book on hand to get up to speed.

Patrick Maguire has written a comprehensive guide about cancer treatment options. He guides you through the 20 most common types of cancer that include: bladder cancer, brain tumors, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, head and neck cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, liver cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, myeloma, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, skin cancer, stomach cancer, thyroid cancer and uterine cancer. Each chapter has a story which makes this very personal. Since cancer is killing 600,000 people a year this book is very needed. Now this is not only a book for people who have cancer it is also good to read to help prevent cancer in the first place. Like I didn't realize that viruses could cause cancer. Women who are worried about breast cancer will also appreciate the section on how exercise can work in their favor. There are also many options once you have been diagnosed. Do you want surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy or immunotherapy? Since my father struggled with Esophageal cancer that specific chapter interested me. Then I also wanted to know about lung cancer since his cancer started to spread to other areas of his body. This book explains how you can put yourself at risk for esophageal cancer if you eat very hot foods or drinks. For those who don't have cancer I'd recommend reading the entire book as a preventative measure. For those who have been diagnosed then it is easy to read this book selectively, just reading the chapters with information on your condition. I think this book would also be helpful for doctors and nurses caring for cancer patients.

Stuck in the Middle: Shared Stories And Tips For Caregiving Your Elderly Parents

Stuck in the Middle: Shared Stories And Tips For Caregiving Your Elderly ParentsI was very disappointed with this book. Based on all the glowing 5-star reviews (friends, perhaps?), I expected something far better than what I got. As a caregiver in the thick of things, it told me nothing I didn't already know, and the information was presented in a random, haphazard way. At one place, the author seemed to be confused about even the basics of Medicare and Medicaid, a critical error in discussing elder issues.

The stories themselves were very poorly written, and could use the services of a good editor at the very least. I was so distracted by the bad writing that I thought to myself, "how in the world did this get published?? It must be a self-published book." Sure enough, it was.

This is the first time I've ever written a review for Amazon, because it's the first time I've ever felt the need to warn others away from purchasing a book!

Don't waste your money. Instead, buy Jane Gross' memoir "A Bittersweet Season." It offers far more usable, helpful information than this shoddy, unprofessional attempt.

Many of "Stuck in the Middle's" range of true stories reflect my own family's physical, emotional, financial and spiritual journey caring for our parents. I'm glad my mom honored and personally cared for my paralyzed dad for 13 years. And I'm glad my siblings and I helped Mom remain at home despite debilitating strokes requiring round-the-clock nursing for several years until her death. But the cost, especially on two sets of siblings and their families was huge. We could have used this book to help us all "count the cost" and better conserve our own health and finances while supporting Mom. I am not a natural planner; but "Stuck" prods me to begin to research and lay out a plan for my own future, and to honestly engage my children in this. So my copy of the book will be highlighted and dog-eared! I now work in a home health company involved in Person Centered Care, and I intend to refer others to "Stuck in the Middle."

The Women's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts: A Leaner, Sexier, Healthier You--In 15 Minutes a

The Women's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts: A Leaner, Sexier, Healthier You--In 15 Minutes a Day!I've had mixed reactions to Selene Yeager's books before (some I like, some are just okay). This one is just okay. Yes, there's a lot of variety, and they're definitely 15 minutes, but there's a few things I wasn't as crazy about...

1. Most (not all, but nearly all) use at least 2 pieces of equipment and often 3: dumbbells, a step, a bench, a stability ball, a pull-up bar (have one of those handy?), a resistance band, a kettlebell, a medicine ball, a foam roller, a BOSU, and and for one medicine ball workout: a partner! I'd have liked it better if there were more workouts using just one piece of equipment for the entire 15 minutes particularly since these are circuit workouts.

2. Names of routines were too cute by half, such as "Mood Lifting" and "Cowgirl." When I'm flipping through the book, I'd rather not have to use some of that 15 minutes to decipher what body parts a routine actually works. It seems they could have been categorized in way that could be accessed faster.

3. Circuits, circuits, and more circuits, and "15 minutes" is more a matter of approach. You get to 15 minutes by running through most of these routines 3 to 4 times. So I'm guessing that if I leave out a circuit, it's 10 minutes and if I add one it's 20. In that case, these aren't *necessarily* 15 minutes, depending on whether you complete the number of circuits as prescribed.

(NOTE: I would NOT recommend performing the classic kettlebell 'halo' as it's shown in this book! You could seriously strain your lower back.)

Generally, it's no worse than any other workout book, but it's not among my favorites. There's variety and most routines can be adapted to be more challenging. However, I can't past the fact that I really liked the The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises by Adam Campbell, and it's too bad more of those moves (and a little less equipment) didn't show up in this book. I think this would've been a better book.

This big book shows dozens of quick workouts. Many of the workouts are basically about 15 minutes of circuit training. These exercises are designed to get a lean, fit and toned body as pictured by the lady on the cover, as opposed to buiding up.

Here's how the workouts go. In general, a few specific exercises are performed intensely and then repeated in a cycle or circuit. The key to getting the workout down to 15 minutes is that there is minimal rest between the exercises. The rest between the circuits is minimal too.

In terms of layout, color photos are large and clear, illustrating the exercises well.

I liked the range of workouts, including bodyweight exercises with no equipment required. Some workouts use dumbbells. If you are at a gym or have workout equipment, you may make use of the workouts that use a barbell, a step, a large (Swiss) ball, a medicine ball, tubing, a bench and a few other tools.

This book is a great resource for quick and easy workouts when you just can't get to the gym. The only real negative is that you have to own about $500 in home gym equipment to do the workouts (i.e. Bosu, step, yoga ball, mat, kettle bells...etc) for this reason I wouldn't recommend the book for someone new to working out. Also it does require some knowledge of proper form (although the book does describe how each exercise should be done properly). All in all for me and my fitness level it was an excellent find.

I love this book! I use it every single day! The excersises in this book keep you entertained and challenged all at the same time. I have been obsessed with Women's Health ever since I first pick up the magazine. Many other books will require alot of equipment and even recommend machines (which I do not have at home.) I have a gym membership so access to the equipment is easy. However, if you do not have a membership to a local gym, in the back of the book are excersises for specific pieces of equipment (ex. Medicine Ball, Kettlebell.)

This book alone has helped me changed my mind set of eating habits, work out schedules and so much more. It's like having a personal trainer with me everyday!! Just be sure to pay attention to your form or the excersizes will obviously not be as affective.

The only downfall to the book, is that because it is so big, it is not as easy to carry around the gym as the magazine. But I guess thats why they call it "The Women's Health BIG Book of 15 Minute Workouts."

All in all, I LOVE this book!!! I recommend it to anyone and everyone!
