How to Implement a High Security Shelter in the Home

How to Implement a High Security Shelter in the HomeI bought this book to learn about fallout, radiation, and preparations that

can save lives. The scope of this book is very broad and I have been able

to educate others using this. I was disappointed that he had no source

listed for renewable power for the fallout shelter light. But I have found

that from other sources. I like the way he gives one the opportunity to

be secure through knowledge and refer to the manual often, especially

to the part about water preservation with a healthy oxygen droplet instead

of using household bleach. He reveals the downside of bleach on one's

health and the fact that it does not last as long as oxygen drops. His

sources are expired on some things but I usually find my own sources

anyway once I know the name of what will work for the long-term.

I was hoping to find a technical book on constructing a reinforced underground room. This book is mainly aimed towards those who want to add a secure room in an existing home. The construction techniques described are unusual from the conventional view point, but coming from Mr Skousen, I'm sure they are dependable. The book includes easy to read technical drawings and step by step instructions for the homeowner that wishes to do the work himself.

Hopefully another manual will come out that will have what I'm looking for.

As an architectural designer, I was looking for information for building shelters and safe rooms for clients. I would say that this book is a thorough and well written, and covers a broad range of incidentals that would need to be considered in the design and use of such shelters. I disagree with one of the other reviewers in reference to the architectural drawings in the book. While the drawings have a definite early 1990's feel, and could benefit from newer CAD technology, I found the drawings to be to standard construction drawing specifications and gave the reader a better understanding of the topics that the author was detailing in the text. Much of the book's information is provided more from the standpoint of trying to provide ideas to be applied to each individual situation, rather than a one size fits all design. There are also diagrams provided within the text to simply illustrate the general idea of a layout being described by the text. These Items include trap door escapes, plumbing, battery storage, and off-grid solar, to name a few. These diagrams merely provide an overview of a general set-up as each system is typically different based upon the manufacturer's specifications. That being said, they all seem to provide enough information to help those who are not familiar with the building industry make better, educated decisions on what they need. This also helps the homeowner to have a better conversation with their architect, contractor and building official, if need be.

Overall, I would say this book would be great for anyone from those concerned with their personal safety at home, to the DIYer that wants to build a shelter, as well as architects and contractors. Not only does the book provide the details that need to be considered, but it also provides a step by step construction overview and also sources to contact for materials and additional information.

The written content of the book may be helpful, and the author is certainly known to have a reputation for skills and experience with the subject matter, however, the drawings, which are somewhat important in a book about structures look like something drawn on a early-1980's computer. They're of almost no use for those whom are accustomed to reading any sort of plans or drawings. I'm a handy person with above-average spatial abilities and can conceptualize 3d spaces pretty easily. Despite such, these drawing were more confusing than non-english instructions in cheap products. It's worth about $5 at best.

For the price of this book, I found this to be utterly disappointing.

Martial Arts For Dummies

Martial Arts For DummiesMartial Arts for Dummies is a delightful and educational book that dispels many of the myths the uninitiated may have heard about the martial arts. The book includes examples of common situations you may run into when first entering the training hall. For example, how to choose a school or art that is right for you, what to look for in a good martial arts instructor, and the meaning of the belt, uniform, and rituals.

The easy, conversational tone of the text makes it difficult to put this book down. After fifteen years of everyday training in the martial arts, I read this book cover to cover and found myself thinking "yes, that's how it is." The chapters on "The Part of Tens" toward the end of the book provide an excellent quick reference whenever you need that energy boost for tonight's class. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to both beginners and advanced students of the martial arts.

Better than I expected. This book is a cogent and pithy overview of martial arts, what they, what they are not, how to get involved with them, and how to succeed if you choose to do so. It covers the basics of a good cross-section of styles including karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, judo, akido, escrima, hapkido, hapkido, muay thai, jeet kune do, and tai chi, all the major players. The author briefly discusses the martial culture, uniforms, and ranking systems so that you know what to expect. Further, she helps you understand how to pick a style and instructor, make the most of your training, know when/where you should use your martial knowledge, and how to avoid injuries during the process. It is comprehensive, well-written, and generally entertaining.

I bought this book to learn about as many martial arts as I could to decide which was best suited for me. This book is extremely informative and showed me to make sure I am choosing an art I enjoy. Being 33 and completely new to martial arts, there was a lot I didn't know and this book guided me through it (visiting classes, talking to instructors and other students, etc.) and helped me know what I was getting in to. I have since chosen my art (Wing Chun) and can honestly say I'm loving the class! Had it not been for this book, I think I would still be talking about taking a martial arts class instead of being enrolled in one. You get a broad overview of so many different arts, their origins, what to look for in an art/a school/classmates/the instructor. Ultimately you must decide which art is for you, but man did this book help! Buy it!

I have been involved in numerous (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kobudo, Kendo, Kenjutsu, Tantojitsu etc) martial arts in my more than 60 years of study, both as a student and instructor. I have bought and read just about every book I could on the martial arts in order to increase the sum total of my knowledge. I found this one to be a very good basic guide for anyone who has little or no experience in the martial arts, but who is thinking of taking up a particular system or style. Do not be turned off by the title (Martial Arts for Dummies), there is a lot of good solid material in this text that would benefit anyone interested in the martial arts. Even those who are experienced in the martial arts will find this book interesting and informative.

This volume is organized into five parts or sections. The first part provides an overview of martial art essentials. The second part explains what is required to "walk the walk and talk the talk" when it comes to the martial arts. The third part of this book is my personal favorite because it summarizes numerous martial art styles such as karate, kung-fu, judo, hapkido, and many of systems. The fourth section covers the ten rules in martial art classes and the ten qualities of a good martial arts teacher. The final section has the glossary and sources and resources.

In conclusion, this book is for anyone who desires to have a basic overview of the various martial art systems and styles.

The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and Relaxation

The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and RelaxationWhen a friend of mine handed this book to me, I looked at the title and groaned. It looked like another flaky little herb book. However, when I flipped through the pages I found full-color photos, detailed write-ups, and Latin names. This book gives the chemical constituents of each herb, lists its uses (medical, culinary, etc.), and even warns of any sort of interaction with others. The quick reference section in the back makes it fast and easy to find a treatment for many common ailments.

From novice to well-learned, every herbalist should have a copy of this book in their personal library.

Why is this my favorite?

* Full-color illustrations of all herbs listed (200+)

* Actual scientific information, including chemical constituents & the results of scientific research to back/refute claims made for herbs

* Excellent information on various potential dangers

* Information on many uses: Medicinal, culinary, dyeing, etc.

* Information on cultivation and growing of various herbs

* Advice on companion planting

If you're into herbalism in the least this book is absolutely and totally essential. It has full-color photographs of most of the major herbs in both their natural and harvested (dried/powdered) states. It also lists a wealth of information on each herb from it's Latin name, common names, basic plant and chemical characteristics, homeopathic uses and quite a bit more. There are priceless reference charts in the back of the book with outstanding information about herb harvesting and cultivation in other sections. It's a bit pricey but it's full-color and WELL worth it. I NEVER loan my copy out. It's that valuable to me.

I believe that anyone caring for themselves ought to have at least 3 books on herbal actions. For studying the herbs more broadly, one would need a number of herbals (herb books) A general book is good for an overview, or quick reference, but doesn't give enough depth on any subject. "New Age Herbalist', for me, is the best for herbal indentification because it contains actual colored photos of herbs, not tiny drawings. It has an impressive amount of color plate pages for the price.

I don't think of it as a "new age" book because it would impress a scientific mind with its listing of active chemical ingredients of each herb. The rest serves as a fine overview guide also, and has a great section on homemade bath products.

I feel a need to have a book for quick reference, several for deeper knowledge on each herb, several for identification, several for historical uses, at least one for gardening and drying, a mini quick reference for traveling. When you have a headache, you don't want to be reading about how to get rid of soil bugs. Hope this helps.

This was the first book I ever got on herbs almost ten years ago. It's definatly time worn. I still use it has a helpful reference, and recommend it. As others have mentioned, it has color photos and illustrations, as well as accurate information on the uses of plants and possible side effects. It also has information on how to use the plants, and general information on the human body and what plants are useful in specific instances. It's not a handy pocket size field guide, for that, I suggest a Petersons.
