Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios

Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case ScenariosThis is the absolute best preparedness book, ever, for average people in urban, suburban and rural areas. I've been following Lisa Bedford's "SurvivalMom" blog for a couple of years, pre-ordered this book and devoured it after it arrived. The comprehensive and well-organized guidance can take a person from zero preparedness to eclipsing 95% of the population with just one trip to the grocery store and a couple hours shopping on the Internet. Today I'm ordering copies for my sister and a couple friends who live near the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the Pacific Northwest and recommending on Facebook for everyone else. Really terrific contribution to promoting and facilitating preparedness. This book is obviously a project of an exceptionally detailed-oriented person who has devoted years to assembling the latest, most useful information in an accessible, efficient manner. The author also helpfully relates her personal experiences in going from a mom focused on getting her family through normal everyday life to one steeped in emergency preparedness scenarios and practical strategies for persevering (comfortably, if possible) through events ranging from routine power outages to being stranded on the road as well as longer-term situations. She also does not shy away from matters usually associated with survivalists -such as the need to not just be able to feed and shelter but also to be prepared to defend oneself and family. The Survival Mom book coupled with wilderness survival knowledge would put someone way ahead of the game (she briefly touches on some wilderness skills -like fire-starters -but does not, for instance, tell how to build a teepee, trap game or do other hard-core wilderness skills -there are plenty of other books on those subjects). In sum, this book is a great value and a keeper.

Living in California about 5 miles from the Hayward and San Andreas fault, you've got to think about the "what ifs". Think it can't happen to you? Think again.... I used to live in Michigan where an ice storm has taken out the power for 2 weeks in the dead of winter. No matter where you live, the unexpected can happen.

"Survival Mom" covers the basics including food storage, water purification, financial and medical preparedness and communication during a crisis. It goes way beyond the basics, however, with the addition of charts, checklists and worksheets to help you stay organized.

A great way to get ready for that 6.5 to 7.5 quake we know will happen someday in San Francisco.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and I've got to say, this book does an outstanding job of filling a long standing need a survival book for your typical homemaker. I have an entire floor-to-ceiling bookshelf full of survival books and my wife hates every one of them. This book however, is something she would sit down and read! Reading the book, it is immediate evident that it was written by a mom for moms. Not that men can't read it, it reads just fine for me, but it is very different in its tone and presentation.

If you've been wanting to get your wife more involved in preparedness then get her this book! She might finally understand what you've been going on about!

I was as excited to receive my copy of Survival Mom. I know you're supposed to be neutral before you start reading, but I will admit I had high expectations for this book. Having visited The Survival Mom blog for a couple of years, I know it is my "go-to" place to find out about emergency preparedness and survival information.

The book is well organized and describes every facet of preparedness including having the proper mindset and avoiding panic, water and food storage, organizing your home to optimize space, learning to live without electricity, finances, safety and security and much more. I recommend reading it from start to finish to get the most out of the book, but busy readers who have an agenda in mind can easily jump around and choose a chapter they are most concerned about. Throughout the book are interesting anecdotes, quizzes, quotes and lists that enhance learning and add variety to your reading experience. The tone is light, and never alarming or oppressive.

The book met and exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it. Whether you are new to preparedness, intermediate or a veteran, you will find this book a valuable resource to keep in your survival library.

Are you confused with all the "prepping" or "survival" info out there? Wonder who or what to believe? Do you wonder why, how and where to start, or how to assess and beef up your prepping efforts? Do you want the hype-free message with no sale pressure?

If so, you will love this book, Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios

by Lisa Bedford.

Chapter One sets the tone for the entire book, "Prepare More, Panic Less." This is the message that comes through loud and clear. It matters not what the motivation is for our family preparations (whether natural disaster, job layoff, illness or something bigger), Lisa Bedford takes us step by step from awareness to action, starting with her own story in the introduction entitled "From Suburban Mom to Survival Mom."

Let's face it, the media is grabbing ahold of this "prepping" movement and is bringing it into the forefront and making it mainstream. People who never thought about storing food, water or extra blankets are now taking cues from tornado and hurricane survivors and packing 72 hour kits. With the reality shows such as "Doomsday Preppers" (no matter what your opinion of it, the show is topping the ratings and people are becoming aware of the need to prepare) and its copycats "Doomsday Bunkers" and those to follow, there are some Doom-and-Gloomers out there who are preaching panic and preying on those who are panicking.

Lisa Bedford's message says not so fast! On page 15 she recites "The #1 Rule of Preparedness... Do your best where you are with what you have."

From water to sanitation, food to organization and decluttering, from home security to survival finances, gardening, growing, preserving to living without electricity, from just starting out to seasoned "preppers" this book is one to have. Survival Mom was birthed and penned by a real-life wife and mom to other moms (but men can definitely identify) laid out in terms, reasoning and actions that we moms understand and relate to.

Great book to have on hand for the extensive checklists and information and it's the one that I will give to my family members who have not begun yet and don't know where to begin.

This book is for the whole family and has resources to get the whole family involved.

NOT worth it, unless you have NO business sense!

This book is the most basic of basics. Unless you have NEVER ran a business and have NO business sense, it is NOT worth buying.

Virtually ALL the info in this book, you will know IF you have ever ran a business.

If you do NOT have any background, you can get this information at any business site, e.g. SBA. or just do Google searches for Projected balance sheets, etc. etc.

The inf on the CD-ROM you will most likely have if you have been a trainer for any length of time Training Logs and the like.

On one of the Excel spread sheets that are on the CD, it has HANDKERCHIEFS as one of the items. Obviously, the author got this off the internet somewhere himself.

I bought the book because the founder of PEAK SCIENCE gave the forward hum!

John Peragine reveals every aspect of the personal training industry in How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Personal Training Business. This book takes on the huge task of being the "go-to" guide for the workout hobbyist seeking to turn a hobby into a career as well as the personal training professional interested in beginning his or her own physical fitness empire.

This text clearly explains every step in the process; however, the order in which the reader should complete the steps is not as clear creating some repetition. Topics include business administration, professional certification, business plan development, business taxes and personal training ethics. This book also supplies useful worksheets, case studies, links and tips giving the reader an accurate picture of the requirement for success not only as a business owner but also as a personal trainer throughout the business lifecycle.

While the discussion of business plans seemed to come too early in the text, making for a hefty first chapter, Peragine provides a thorough reference manual that carefully details what is necessary to build a successful personal training business.

I am really enjoyingthis book and am almost done with it. I am able to use most of the information in my venture to start my own business. It clarifies some of the aspects of bookkeeping, accounting, types of enterprises, management, marketing, surveying, planning, and counseling as related to a new business. However, I assumed that anyone who wanted to open a training company would already know something about being certified and wouls have had experience in the field. I skipped a couple of chapters because it addresses VERY basic topics, such as deciding whether training is right for you, and how to obtain a certification and experience. I have been working in the field long enough to know the industry, and although I know that not everyone has had experience, I think most people who are comfortable enough to start their own venture probably have a grasp on the experience they need. The rest of the book, however, is VERY helpful. I have notes on the pages EVERYWHERE, and continue to refer back to it in my planning process. The included CD is also wonderful!

Hypoglycemia: A Better Approach

Hypoglycemia: A Better ApproachI was told to obtain this book almost 20 years ago by a physician that was putting his job on the line by doing so. Now it is more common for a physician to consider natural means of healing.

This book changed my life. I have been involved deeply in the field of nutrition and health for many years, and this book is still the best information on Hypoglycemia that I have ever encountered.

After almost 20 years, I am still problem free from Hypoglycemia. I follow the general plan in the book as a daily practice and have seen remarkable results. My husband, who has eaten this way with me stopped needing glasses after only one year, and has never needed them again since.

If you suspect hypoglycemia at all, this book is well worth the small investment. I recommend it with enthusiasm!

I bought this book 20 years ago and am back for another copy. This book put my health on track when the doctors couldn't. It explains why you are sick and an easy method of fixing it including diet, minor excercise and vitamin & mineral supplements. THIS IS NOT A HIGH PROTEIN SOLUTION like most others. It is an easy to understand and follow NUTRITIONAL solution that really has saved my life.

I had gone to the Dr. to find out why I was not feeling well. He had no clue. I demanded a glucose tolerance test. After viewing the results he just told me to "watch it". Watch what??? I tried to get a diet from the dietitian at the hospital. She said I had to get a "diet prescription" from my Dr.! So I tried my OB-GYN. He gave me the high-protein diet. I lost 20# in one month and was very lethargic. Plus, my toddler daughter was beginning to develop breast tissue from all of the hormones in the meats we were consuming (another story!!)

I wandered into a health food store one day and chatted with the proprietor who was an RN. She said "You must read this book!" I did and it saved my life. I have gone on to become a Certified Nutritionist and have recommended this book many, many times. It is hard to find though!!!

Truth is never misguided or outdated, and Dr. Paavo Airola found the truth (concerning the diet and health issues) as only a minority before or since him have. I make a similar statement in the book that I am writing on the subject. Nothing speaks like experience, and as one who has overcome serious disease through natural means and invested nearly a decade in research after having done so, I realize that Dr. Airola knew exactly what he was talking about. May I also suggest that one investigate Dr. Max Gerson, especially if one wants to know how to avoid or overcome that so-called "mystery" disease: CANCER. (Amazon carries one book written by Gerson and several written about him and his method.) And the book The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell (2005) helps illustrate the fact that the dietary and health truth that Dr. Airola found is far from outdated! In fact, the Truth is still waiting for us to catch up to It!

In college i was having all types of serious negative symptoms without explanation and they were getting worse. The doctors i saw misdiagnosed my problem even going so far as to have me try anti-convulsive meds. My aunt mentioned her son had similar symptoms and was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and she recommended this book. I then requested a glucose tolerance test and matched it to the samples in this book. Finally, a diagnosis and treatment approach! After following this book's guidelines on diet, supplements and lifestyle my symptoms disappeared or become minor and manageable allowing me to move forward with my life. i will always be grateful to this author and publisher for putting out a book that helped me regain control of my life at a crucial time. There are more recent books available but for me this book remains my reference.

The Hepatitis C Handbook

The Hepatitis C HandbookMr. Dolan has written the most comprehensive book to date on Hep. C. He covers what is going on in the Medical community and the alternative medicine community. He has Hep C himself so comes at the issue with more understanding then the average author. It has helped me to better understand this disease and I highly reccomend it.

Matthew Dolan has created the best companion a person with HCV can have. GIven the severity of HCV it is astonishing that there are so few decent books on the disease. In fact, there are only two: Stephen Buhner's Herbs for Hepatitis C and Matthew Dolan's. The Hepatitis C Handbook is simply the best and most supportive overview of hepatitis C on the market. The depth of research is remarkable, the insights of its author remarkable as well. BUY THIS BOOK!

It answered my questions in a way that I could understand. It even explained symptoms that I was having which my doctor seemed to have no concept of. It gave legitamacy to my symptoms, to my feelings, to my experience. I knew I was not alone. Brain fog! So that's what it's called! I had no idea other people were having this too. His book gave me confidence. I can not say enough about what it did for me emotionally to know I wasn't going crazy. I had real symptoms, perhaps ones not totally understood by science yet.

This book taught me what I needed to know about this disease to feel that I understand enough to face it. Knowledge truly is empowering and sometimes our best weapon. The book is a rational look at what Hep C is and it is the most comprehensive I have found. I also like the truly balanced way in which all available therapies (conventional and complimentary) are outlined. No bias, no bashing, no advocating this over that, just presenting all our options. This is what so many books don't do. That is what I loved the most about it. That is what I try to do on my website

This seems to be a well written book with a lot of research put into it but, is any of it worthwhile for someone who has had HCV for many years and now cannot tolerate medical industry treatments with Interferon? I read several pages online and checked the index for herbal treatments with mixed findings.

Liver Rescue 4: most of the ingredients in this product I found mentioned in the index.

Himalaya Liver Care: none of the herbal ingredients in this product were listed in the index.

Both of these products have good reviews by users so I was expecting to see mention of the herbs used in the index of this book.

I'm not interested in reading 500 pages about the virus and it's small size. I have been living with extreme pain and fatigue for many years. I am looking for alternate treatments with herbs or anything that will improve my quality of life. I know that this virus will be the reason I leave this world if I don't get hit buy a car or some other accident first. I am going to hold off on this book for now and see what else is out there.
