The author tells how she changed the game by taking personal responsibility for research, experimentation and continuous learning, using what she "knew" as a starting point, but then listening to her heart and her gut -rolling up her sleeves and improvising, and trying things when the situation didn't respond. She didn't turn away from medicine, but reached out to all kinds of medicine and its practitioners all the way through. And she learned something useful from everyone she met along the way. The approach described here is a model of learning, resilience, persistence and courage from which everyone can benefit.Want Curing Courtney: Doctors Couldn't Save Her...So Her Mom Did Discount?

a hoot, excellent research on plant constituents and medicinal uses. Couldn't have done it without him! Check out www.bajabotanicals.com
Thank you, Michael. This book was very easy to use. I wished there was more color photos but with such good descriptions and drawings you really don't need them. There are color photos for about half the plants described in the book. I love the way Michael Moore writes. He makes it so easy to read and understand. This book will be used for years to come in my home.Medicinal Plants of the Desert and Canyon West: A Guide to Identifying, Preparing, and Using Traditional Medicinal Plants Found in the Deserts and Canyons of the West and Southwest by Michael Moore was a disappointing book. As someone who lives in the desert I do a lot of hiking and camping so I thought this book would provide useful and easy to use information should I become sick or injured. Unfortunately, this book falls short on providing quick and usable treatment using local plants.
For each of the plants listed the author uses the following format to discuss the plant: common name, Latin name, other names, map of location, appearance, habitat, constituents, cultivation, collecting, stability, preparation, and medicinal uses.
Areas about this book that I did NOT like include:
1. The book provides only three pages on preparation methods to utilize the plant. These methods include: teas, eyewash, salves, poultice and tinctures. These methods range from too complicated if you have never done this before or too general with not enough usable information. If you have never prepared a plant to use as a treatment you are not going to learn it from this book. Each plant listing does provide a "preparation" section but again I did not find the information easily useable.
2. There are 69 plants reviewed in the book but only 30 color photographs and some of the photos come 6 to a page. There are many black and white drawings of the other plants but such drawing fail to do the plant justice.
3. The product description states, "This book can be used as a field guide", yet many of the preparation methods would not be possible to use while in the field. For example on one of the plants you need to heat it to 250 degrees or you need other ingredients that you probably would not be carrying with you. Being able to identify a plant in the field is significantly different from being able to utilize the plant in the field.
4. The font size used throughout the book is very small. I estimate the font size to be 7pt or 8pt.
The following comes from the introduction:
"If you like lists, here is one to keep in mind when using this book:
1. Be sure of the plant you are picking.
2. If the herb makes you sick, take less or throw it away.
3. If it doesn't work, use more or forget it entirely.
4. Trust your own judgment above all.
5. That which stimulates can irritate; that which helps can hurt.
6. If you don't get better or get worse quickly, call your doctor."
While some of that advice can certainly be applied to traditional medicine it surely does not foster confidence in using herbal medicine especially if I am the one who has to pick the plant and prepare it correctly! Herbs are not harmless and mistakes can be harmful or even deadly. Yes, the same is true about traditional medicines but I at least know exactly what I am getting when I pick up medicine from the pharmacy.
In today's electronic age of the Internet and websites such as YouTube it is possible to conduct online research that will provide much more useable information. Medicinal Plants of the Desert and Canyon West is a book that I would not recommend unless you have a solid background on herbs and herbal preparations.
Your Non-Toxic Pregnancy

My first "chemical-free" pregnancy book was The Complete Organic Pregnancy by Deidre Dolan and Alexandra Zissu, and while I did enjoy it, I found it lacking in many areas (such as recommendations and resources for finding less toxic products). Because of this, I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up a copy of Your Non-Toxic Pregnancy. Not only does it back up its claims with sound research (from many different worldwide-respected organizations), but it gives many different suggestions for how to live more organically.
The book is organized well and filled with attractive photos of glowing pregnant mamas-to-be. The information is consise. The suggestions are do-able.
The author devotes a whole section to toxins in beauty products, and includes recipes for homemade alternatives that I found especially interesting and helpful. Another section describes the dangers in modern household cleaning products, and gives a list of eco-friendly options. And these subjects are just the beginning.
I really cannot give enough praise to how well this book is put together. There are many books out there screaming the dangers of many of our modern-day luxuries, but do absolutely nothing to help us find better, safer, and more eco-friendly ways of living. This book has an alternative for every not-so-safe product out there. Many of the alternatives are UK products, but almost all can be ordered online.
As a quick side note, I've noticed many reviews for this book (on other sites) and reviews for The Complete Organic Pregnancy state that the authors are trying to scare you into doing impossible things. I say for a fact that none of these changes are impossible to make. Yes, the information is scary, but this does not mean it is fear culture-based. Someone needs to put this information out there, and I find it unwise and even immature to criticize those few who are brave enough to do it. /rantThis book was a helpful source of realistic ways to protect myself and my unborn baby. Great ideas, great resources (whether in the UK, US, or elsewhere), and well organized. Not only did I read it cover to cover, but I've also referred to it throughout my pregnancy and plan to keep it on hand after baby is born. It has been by far the most helpful of all the "greening-your-pregnancy" books I've read.

Sex Made Easy: Your Awkward Questions Answered-For Better, Smarter, Amazing Sex

Full disclosure: I was already familiar with Dr. Debby Herbenick's work as I write for her blog (Mysexprofessor.com). She's been wonderful to work with so I suppose I am already predisposed to like her and her take on things. On the flip side, by engaging with lots of sex education/research, I've learned to be critical of this kind of writing, so if something seems wrong or improperly reasoned through, I'll spot it!
First, this book is very easy to read and accessible. Debby's tone is informal, and the book is very well-written, making it a pleasure to read. At the same time, she carefully (but unobtrusively) cites her sources and lets us know where her facts come from. Debby does a great job of dispelling misinformation and replacing "sex myths" with enlightened opinions and facts. Nothing Debby writes is ever judgmental, which is great because it helps the reader keep an open mind rather than feel defensive about being interested in a particular topic.
The book is well-organized, with chapters on women's and men's anatomy, orgasms, partner sex, sexual health, logistics, and things like fantasies and sex toys. Throughout the book, Debby emphasizes that sex is a normal and healthy part of human life. Even behaviors that may seem abnormal or perverted are often quite common, and can be explored safely and healthily with some simple guidelines (mostly involving communication and consent). Debby's use of personal anecdotes throughout the book--both her own and others from her research or friends that she has permission to ethically share--helps demonstrate the variety of sexual responses and experiences out there.
I learned a lot from reading this book, including a few surprising things. I hadn't been expecting such extensive information on sex during the various stages of pregnancy, or how pet ownership can affect sex. Since I've never been pregnant nor had pets as an adult, I hadn't imagined that these issues could be quite so complex, but they are, and I applaud Debby's dedication to bringing them to our attention. Other information, such as the detailed and up-to-date section on STIs (sexually transmissible infections), was quite sobering but good to know about.
I could go on with the interesting examples, but I'd just be rewriting the book in this review, which is unnecessary since a) it's already well-written in the first place, and b) you should get your own copy to read!A real eye opener to the questions that are being asked today by the kids at or pas puberty we thought we had it figured out.
Every up coming generation seems to think sex was never discovered before.

Mostly stating the obvious, but in a clear and entertaining way and with a wonderfully healthy attitude which is quite erotic.Pretty informative overall, but was written more for women. Even the parts about men are written with the idea of a woman reading them to share the information with her partner rather than a man reading to learn something about himself. But besides that I repeat it's an informative book none the less.Want Sex Made Easy: Your Awkward Questions Answered-For Better, Smarter, Amazing Sex Discount?
Nursing Homes: Getting Good Care There

It tells you all of the things that you might get a nursing home to do for your loved one.
Unfortunately, it doesn't say that there is NO way in h--that any nursing home will do any of it. (Especially a for profit one.)
They just look at you as if you have two heads and continue doing what they always do, much to the detriment of the one you love and feel responsible for.

Buy Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg: How to Play the Game & Win Now
I have been playing American Maj Jongg for over a year. This book provides well written easy to follow explanations and instructions for novice as well as others who have some experience. The author provides quizes to help the reader check his understanding at the end of each chapter. The best parts of the book for me were the exercises he provided for individuals to practice such skills as chosing what hand to try to play from the card. You can't go wrong with this book if you want to play American Maj Jongg (National or American).Read Best Reviews of Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg: How to Play the Game & Win Here
This is an excellent book for beginners and great for those who have been taught by others but need more insight into the correct procedures of playing the game. The print is large, the color of the tiles is clear, and the format is such that each step is clearly understood. Exercises are given to help a person experience what is written. At the end of each section is a quiz to determine how well the material was absorbed. I highly recommend this book for an easy explanation of the game and the rules.Want Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg: How to Play the Game & Win Discount?
Due to a printing error, a few copies of this book had some color problems of the kind that P. Radcliffe mentions. The good news is, if your copy is problematic, you may return it to the publisher for an exchange. There's no reason to miss out on this book--it really makes the game fun, even for a true beginner like me!American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes: The Ultimate Home Reference from the Diabe

The book does a very credible job of both for many aspects of diabetes. As an example, it provides a description how insulin works at the body and cell level, the effects of exercise, diet, timing, lifestyle, and many of the other factors that affect blood glucose levels. The descriptions start at a high level (e.g. exercise uses glucose in the blood, so levels tend to drop) to a more theoretical discussion of insulin interacting at the cellular level within your body and how your liver and other organs react.
The same type of treatment is also provided for other subjects, ranging form what to do when you are sick; sex and libido issues; diet; types of insulin; managing diabetes around sports, exercise, work, travel, stress, family, entertaining; interaction of factors; complications of high and low sugars; and a bunch more.
In short, there are no doubt books which cover individual aspects of any part of diabetes with more detail and rigor, but if you want one book that does a very credible job on most of the topics, this is a good choice.
PROS:
Very readable.
Well organizedindividual topics are fairly well indexed and broken down by topic, and for each topic, the discussion breaks down how this might affect different portions of the population (e.g. Type1, Type2, Gestational).
Seems to be written by people who both have actual experience as diabetics and real medical knowledge. Does not have the latest fads.
Reasonably up-to-date
A lot of info for less than $10
CONS:
My guess is that different sections are edited by different people, so the same information can be repeated multiple times. Still, it does serve to make each section self-contained.
Some of the stuff is a little obvioussuch as the tip to shop around for best prices on insulin. Still, my guess is that no matter how obvious, someone probably never thought of it.
Sections on health care coverage are so general as to be useless
I would have liked to see more references included for nerds like myself who would like to read more technical reference on the subject. Sure, you can go hunt for them, but the authors no doubt had them at their fingertips.
SUMMARY:
An outstanding value, lots of good info. I had confidence that the material was good information, not someone's opinionI love, love, love this book! I am only half way through, and all of my questions have already been answered. The rest of the information is just an added bonus to questions that I didn't even know I had yet. I always share my new learnings, and it has helped one of my co-workers to offer her friend advice, who has a newly diagnosed, Type 1 diabetic, son. To be educated on the topic leaves both the diabetic and their support system feeling uplifted. This is also a must read book on diabetes. These doctors and researchers have been on the front line of this disease for many years and this is their results advice and knowledge of what they have learned and discovered. If you have diabetes or if runs in the family you must read this book.We purchased this book on the recommendation of my husband's physician, and have found it thorough, informative and helpful in understanding the disease and what he can do to keep it under control.A book no diabetic should be without. Very detailed and comprehensive.
I recommend this book fully. Glad I bought it.

It turned out that it covered just 3 natural products, which were apple cider vinegar, honey, and kelp. It turns out that if you just add these to your diet that you will be healthy.Dr Jarvis started experimenting using these ingredients on cattle and horses. The animals has such excellent results that he started using them on his patients. They also had excellent results. He includes a lot of research information from other sources. He has a nice comfortable writing style.
I loved it.
