300 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners that are Ready When You Are

300 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners that are Ready When You AreDana Carpender's previous slow cooker book had been my favorite cookbook. Now, it's this one. I did not notice any missing recipes in the first 6 chapters, but there are loads of new ones that look absolutely yummy. The font and page layout are easy on the eyes. Definitely worth the upgrade from 200 to 300 recipes. You need this book.

Since starting a low carb lifestyle and loving to cook I have found Dana's recipes to be inventive but not

overcomplicated. I just tried the "Stuffed Pepper" recipe last night and it was great. I have also purchased 1001 Low Carb recipes and 300 15-minute recipes. They give me lots of great ideas to try while maintaining my low carb eating plan. If you love to cook and want to keep it low carb give her books a try.

Just made my first recipe -Chicken Paprikash -from the new book, and it is plate-licking wonderful. A conservative estimate would be that over 45 years of cooking, I've made Chicken Paprikash at least 180 times from many, many different recipes. This was absolutely the best. If the rest of the book is this good, we'll be in hog heaven for a good long time.

P.S. the only tinkering I did with the recipe was to degrease and reduce the sauce which forms in the crock pot before adding the sour cream, a maneuver suggested elsewhere in the book.

When other reviewers say that a book has the same basic recipes but a simple spice or protein change counts as a 'new recipe', believe them! I bought this book anyway despite reading this same kind of review about this book (and most of the others). It's true! it's really true.

Like others say, it's also hard to find a recipe. You have to know what it's called, and if it has some odd name instead of just 'meatballs', good luck Chuck! I have three different slow cookers and I'll be damned if any of them make a good version of anything in this book. Three cookers can't be wrong, it has to be the recipes. I found them overdone, or too watery, or just not having the flavorful bang that I expected.

The recipes LOOK GOOD on paper, I can't deny it, I marked several to try and just could not get desirable results in the (basic) 6-8 hour time frame that most recipes seem to call for. Unlike the recipes I love from George Stella and other authors, the flavors in these just do not seem to fall within a range that myself or my family like. Some not enough, others just don't feel like there is a good balance between the spices used. Not anything in here I would try twice, that's for sure.

I could 'trade it in' on Amazon for a whole $1.75! Whoopee, after I paid what, $15 for this new? Ugh.

There are tons of slow cooker recipes for free on the internet, that you can easily adapt to low carb cooking. And they don't rely on Splenda out the wazzoo! I hate the aftertaste of Splenda and a lot of these sweet recipes take such an everloving MOUNTAIN of them, that it makes the final product inedible for our tastes.

Not one I would recommend. And I'll be giving my copy away because my local used bookstores will not buy it from me or even let me trade it in!!

Almost all of the "sweet" recipes in this book, from appetizers to desserts, require splenda. If you're not interested in using artificial sweeteners you might not find this book that useful.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to ProBobbi Brown isn't about makeup trickery and techniques designed to alter the shape of a feature or make an average woman look like a drag Marilyn Monroe. If you are looking for this kind of book--as I suspect some of the other reviewers were--look elsewhere. What she is about is teaching a woman to look and feel her best, and this book does an excellent job of showing each and every step, in a way that a novice can understand and a pro can appreciate. Not everyone may feel they need this kind of instruction...but then why read a book called "Makeup Manual" if you already know it all?

Unlike her other books, which focus quite a bit on how health and lifestyle affect beauty, Bobbi's Makeup Manual really is dedicated to makeup artistry. A beginning makeup artist will find the detailed instructions on dramatic smoky eyes, false eyelash application, and how to work on a photo shoot especially useful. Bobbi also delves into extreme color, editorial looks, makeup as art, and tribal and geisha looks, all of which are territory uncovered in her previous books.

To summarize, if you appreciate Bobbi Brown's aesthetic, you will enjoy this book. If you want to know how to create basic and dramatic looks in a way that is pretty and modern, you will love this book. If you are a new makeup artist, you need this book. If you want to know how to transform Andy Rooney into Audrey Hepburn with lipstick, glitter, and seventeen concealers, you will hate this book. If you already know it all...write your own book. I'll look forward to reading it.

Cheers!

Leafing through Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual is almost like sitting down and having a cup of latte with the makeup whiz herself. Her book answers every question I'd ask, and subjects are arranged in an easy to locate format along with step-by-step instructions so the reader can take as much or as little time as she wishes. Dramatic for a special evening? Understated for the office? Picture perfect for a photography session? The choice is ours. While some tend to make applying cosmetics a difficult task one of the reasons I like Bobbi Brown so much is that she makes it easy.

Never one to overlook the necessity of good health via nutrition, exercise, and sleep Bobbi begins with some practical reminders along those lines. Then, it's on to skin care basics. I thought I knew all I needed to to know about cleansing, moisturizing, etc. Wrong! Bobbi said that dry lips are a sign that one should drink more water, and she's right it worked for me. Also, she suggested applying moisturizer by "gently pressing the product into the skin until it is completely absorbed." Also works for me!

There are tons of these tips that really do make a difference all the way from choosing the right foundation shade (swatch a few shades on your face, check the colors in natural light the one that disappears is for you) to shaping eyebrows to applying lip gloss that stays, yes, glossy.

The photographs are gorgeous and especially useful when the reader is shown the application of blush or eye shadow from start to finish. If you're a budding makeup artist Bobbi shares a wealth of information and advice.

Also included are makeup tips for teens, brides, and special occasions. There's something helpful for everyone in Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual!

If you are looking for makeup from waking up to waking up the Boardroom this book is filled with great advice. Typically, I have found that many women just DON'T want to COMMIT to looking good. They want great results with no effort. If you want to get rid of those dark circles, TRUST ME, it really may take 2 or 3 colors, powdered down and maintained during the day. As to the profession, Bobbi Brown does the best thing by exposing her kit and listing ALL the items that must be carried to every appt.,plus cleaned up and maintained for the next time. Again the wise message is there are no shortcuts to looking great or being in the beauty business. But the rewards of fun, meeting interesting people and escaping 9to5 if you wear makeup or use it as a profession are worth it!

Rating: 4.5 stars

Bobbi Brown's latest book is said to be the book that her fans have been waiting years for and I can see why. This book is incredibly comprehensive not to mention aesthetically pleasing, with its vivid, colorful and sometimes artistic photographs.

The chapters start off very basic by outlining the fundamental makeup tools and their maintenance, as well as helpful shopping tips. I liked how everything is laid out very clearly and explained in great detail. Even someone who is quite familiar with makeup and its equipment can benefit from this section. There are also sections on skin analysis which teach skincare basics and even discuss healthy lifestyle and nutrition.

The next sections feature step-by-step makeup applications for the face, lips and eyes, which take great care to educate readers about the right shades, right application and troubleshooting recommendations.

The sections start becoming more advanced which I would recommend reading after the basics are mastered or at least familiar. Bobbi Brown also includes advice for those seeking a professional career as a makeup artist which was interesting, although I imagine not incredibly relevant for the average consumer.

Above all, my favorite section of the book is on makeup for magazines, television and film because it offers a rare glimpse into the ideas behind makeup choices and really highlights the power of makeup. At the end of the book there are some more interesting sections that rarely get included into a makeup manual, such as a history of makeup and a guide to the big names in the makeup industry.

This book is a fun, beautiful and informative makeup guide, which as the title states, is "for everyone from beginner to pro".

Most women learn how to apply makeup in their early teens and then continue learning new things as they mature. By the time they are fifty-seven (like I am) they pretty well know their faces, their coloring and what works and what doesn't. But suppose you started life at age fifty-seven, where would all of your experience be? This happened to me. I transitioned from male to female, and there I was with, pardon this, my face hanging out and nothing to put on it! For someone in my position, Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual has been nothing less than a Godsend! I have learned more in the past few months from this book than I ever dreamed possible and instead of looking foolish with bad makeup and no knowledge of how to use it, I have not only learned how to apply it properly and what works for me, but have also gained a great deal of confidence just because I know what to do now. Thank You Bobbi, from the bottom of my heart. This book is just THAT GOOD!

Meniere Man And The Astronaut. The Self Help Book For Meniere's Disease

Meniere Man And The Astronaut. The Self Help Book For Meniere's DiseaseThe author was struck with the disease in his prime, 46-years-old. He lovingly shares how he overcame this debilitating disease in hopes that it will help others who are faced with the same frightening challenge.

In spite of the fact that the cause is unknown and there is no well-defined treatment, he chose to not let the disease defeat him. He won the battle by changing his attitude about the disease and taking back control of his life through exercise, diet, vitamins, alternative therapies and positive mental training.

He urges those who are facing the same battle to create their own personal regime and take control. He then proceeds to give you detailed instructions on the steps he took to take back his life. He covers so much that is would be impossible to list them all in this short review, but some points that jumped out at me were:

1. The importance of finding your triggers and stressors

2. How to cope with an attack, the hearing loss, and diminished cognitive abilities.

3. Medications, surgical options, and alternative therapies.

He emphasizes that the only thing that stands in the way of successfully managing the illness is attitude. It is important to understand that there are viable choices that can be made.

He ends the book with a short chapter titled: Laugh. Love. Life. . . . then, follows it with "100 ways of coping with Meniere's."

Highly recommended.

Kudos to the author for having the strength to tackle a subject that hits so close to home.

One by one he skillfully addresses each aspect of the disease; from symptom recognition, to the effect of each symptom on the human body, and finally to the options available in treating these debilitating symptoms.

Not only did the author present a smorgasbord of pertinent information, but did so from a first-person point of view. Not only in a way that was easily understood, but in a fashion that tugged at the reader's heartstrings as well.

If you a looking for the definitive `read' on Meniere's disease this is the book for you.

It has helped me tremendously in dealing with my sister's husband.

Wonderfully Uplifting and Inspirational

The author recounts his personal journey, courageously overcoming the trauma and effect of Meniere Disease.

With care and erudition he explains the steps he successfully undertook in what might best be regarded as a guidebook for coping with and recovering from the disease.

His honest, intelligent and sometimes humorous descriptions will provide invaluable assistance not only to fellow sufferers but to anyone seeking to restore quality to and optimise their lives after being diagnosed with a debilitating condition.

Insightfully written and easy to follow.

I was unsure of what to expect when I started to read this book, but it quickly became apparent that it is in fact, a truly uplifting story. Both well written and well structured, it takes the reader on one man's incredible journey from the complete despair at suffering the debilitating Meneire decease to inspirational hope for others in his position. It's pages contain a lot of helpful information but it is also an entertaining read.

This book could only be written by someone who has been to hell and back. It's poignancy tugs at the heart strings at times and yet the story is inspiring and full of hope. The author writes with authority and a hugely positive attitude, which makes me think that this book will be of immense help to anyone suffering any chronic illness.

I feel so strongly about the message of hope this book conveys, that I have recommended it to my daughter-in-law who, as a young mother herself, has suffered through a difficult decease and life-changing surgery.

This is a definate 5 stars for me.

Workin' It!: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style

Workin' It!: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of StyleI loved this book. Miss RuPaul is workin it and has got it goin on!

A little more seriously, RuPaul should be commended for styling a self improvement book that works from the inside out (of a person). I was thoroughly impressed with the spiritual side of RuPaul as presented. He has walked a very rocky road and is here to offer his experience, strengh, and hope (as they say in 12 step meetings) so that others may graciously learn the "ropes" rather than having to experience them. Actually, this book is considerably(!) more provocative than expected. I stupidly assumed it would be full of frolic and whimsy--and it has those moments--however, the bulk of it is dedicated to telling his sobering story and sharing the wisdom he has accrued through the years. It's very much, ultimately, a "feel good" story. I originally bought the Kindle edition but was so impressed with what he had to say that I subsequently purchased the hardback so I could highlight and have ready access to many of his philosphical offerings. Four and a half stars. Highly recommended.

By the way, to me, this is not a gay or straight book. It's a person book noting the things he has learned through years of drag and other life experiences.

I bought this mainly because I'm a RuPaul fan but was pleasantly surprised that it was packed full of great positive advice and life lessons. There are tons of photos of Ru that are fun to see as he's in all sorts of different looks. You'll learn a lot about Ru himself and some of his ups and downs in his life and how doing the right thing, positive attitude and networking can bring you great things in life. Of course there's plenty of style tips for both men and women so there's something for everyone in this book. Its a fun read that just gives you a great positive feeling and these days we all can use some good energy and feel good. I really enjoyed it!

Buy Workin' It!: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style Now

I bought this book because I am a long time fan of Rupaul's work! I'm even hooked on "Rupaul's Drag Race"....the only reality TV show I watch; it's just TOO entertaining!

Too bad this book doesn't live up to all of Ru's former success. I had a much more thorough review written until it got deleted by accident (sadface) so I will just summarize here:

Pros:

Beautiful full color photos litter every other page of this book...some very fabulous shos of Ru in all her glamorous glory!

Insights into the workday schedule Ru had for filming her new show. We see just how hard a worker she has to be and how much effort goes into getting all dolled up in drag.

Ru's ebulient personality shines, especially in the introduction. The best advice the book gives is to always have positive energy and to let go of drama (if you are already someone who believes in "getting what you give" then you can probably go spend your 20 dollars elsewhere)

Cons:

20 dollars for a thin little paperback book?! (the glossy photos must account for this! Glad I got a good deal for it here on Ebay!)

Can be read in less than an hour.

-Very little information of actual substance (Do we really care about the fact that you don't eat fruit in tandem with any other foods s if it were a miracle diet solution? Do we really want to hear all about how you had a colonoscopy in full detail so that you could get a "Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity Booty!"?)

This book is advertised as a guide to style and to life, but the information is very brief and very general. Don't expect to be having a full makeover just from reading this book

Very little of Ru's story is revealed (anything about his history mentioned briefly in this book can be found mentioned in greater detail in his previous book, the autobiography, "Letting it all Hang out")

I was rather disapointed overall with this book, being such of fan of this Queen's work. It just didn't satisfy me...though some of the photos were fun to look at, I was hoping for more in depth information.

If you want to know more about Ru I recommend getting his autobiography, "Letting it All Hang Out" instead of this one. But if you are a diehard Ru fan, or are in the market for a fashion photobook then this book could be worth the $20 price tag.

Read Best Reviews of Workin' It!: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style Here

I'm glad that I just checked this book out from the library because it is super short. There are many beautiful pictures of Rupaul in his glory, but apart from that the book doesn't have much substance. It does go into great detail about applying a wig, but since I don't wear wigs that info wasn't applicable to me.

I'm a huge Rupaul fan and I listen to his music all the time when I work out at the gym. (The best work-out song is the remix of Looking Good Feeling Gorgeous called High Heel Steppin.) I have previously read his autobiography which was called "Letting it All Hang Out".... and there was quite a bit of overlap from that book to this book.

I like the down-to-earth style of this book, but it was just so short! The advice to let go of the drama, be kind, love yourself... well, it's good advice, but it's pretty basic. The fashion advice to pack lightly for a trip by packing neutral basics was okay, but didn't rock my world.

I wish he would have gone more into detail about which make-up brands he uses and trusts... also more details about his favorite fashions, styles, color mixing, textures, etc. I guess, there is still plenty more to write for a third book!

Overall, I recommend this book based on the pictures, but don't expect too much.

Want Workin' It!: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style Discount?

RuPaul's latest book is a self help book, but one for both the inner and outer you. It's as funny and frivolous as his TV show RuPaul's Drag Race, but also like the TV show, has moments of insight and honest revelation.

There are of course, many beauty tips for women but also a nice helping of clothing tips for men. You'll learn a bit about RuPaul's history and how he came to be a world-renowned star and also find out some of the life lessons he's learned along the way.

The book starts off quite serious laying out RuPaul's basic tenants of living a full and happy life. I suspect RuPaul has read some Eckhart Tolle as I heard a lot of his ideas echoed in the Introduction.

I would have liked a slightly more in-depth book, but enjoyed the many and varied photos of RuPaul throughout. Maybe a photo book should be next on his list of things to do.

Positive, uplifting, inspiring, funny and even candid, Workin' It has something for everyone to enjoy.
