Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital, and Hospice

Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital, and HospiceAfter reading Reiki Energy Medicine, this reader finds writing this review quite difficult. It is quite tempting to lose any measure of objective distance and launch into the most effusive praise of this delightful book. At 120 pages, including notes and index, this book manages to say in a straightforward, concise, and simple way what so many other books three times the length or more are unable to communicate.

Without wasting too much time, the authors define and delineate with ease the nature of that universal healing life force that we know as reiki and its efficacy as a complement to traditional allopathic medicine. They neatly outline protocols that they, themselves, have used to integrate reiki into various health care environments from the emergency room to the hospital to the hospice. They discuss the success of programs they have developed and taught to other health care professionals, who have then enthusiastically integrated reiki healing into their health care practices. Reiki, as seen by the authors, is a cost-effective means of providing additional care and support to patients encountering what has so often been the impersonal and technical face of modern medicine. It re-integrates compassion and care back into the caregiver-patient/recipient relationship. Much anecdotal evidence is supplied in this book to demonstrate the extent to which this return of the compassionate relationship alone can drastically reduce the cost and length of recovery.

In the hospice setting where recovery is not an option, Reiki can transform what, under modern conditions, has become a degrading or frightening decline to death into a healing transition. Besides its utility as a palliative measure to treat even the worst pain, Reiki is a gentle guide to ease the patient's concerns and to assist them in their journey out of this life. Remarkably, reiki has also proven quite healing in the relationships of the hospice client with their survivors. In a word, Reiki can assist in cleaning out so much of the emotional unfinished "business" of the client. The authors supply anecdotes supporting this concept and discuss protocols as to how to apply and integrate reiki in the hospice setting.

I am reminded of an article, "Reiki in Hospice Care: Miranda's Story," by John Mramor(Massage & BodyWork Magazine, Feb/Mar 2004 issue) that eloquently affirms the principles that Ms. Barnett and Ms. Chambers have discussed. The client, Miranda, was a single mother of two in her early forties dying from cancer. After a traumatic and highly dysfunctional life, it didn't appear that she would find any healing, peace, or resolution as she approached the end of her life. Nonetheless, through the persistent yet ever so gentle efforts of Mr. Mramor, Miranda was able to find not only some measure of relief from her severe pain, but also to find the healing and resolution of life issues to continue her journey from this life to the next. I feel blessed by the serendipity to have read this article at the same time I was reading Reiki Energy Medicine.

Equally important to discussing the use of reiki in the modern healthcare facility was the emphasis placed by the authors upon the need for caregivers to take care of themselves. The importance of self-Reiki can not be repeated too often. Self-Reiki is vital to maintaining the energy and health of caregivers and to reducing their burdens of dis-ease and stress. As in their discussion regarding hospital and hospice protocols, the authors outline at length the importance of self-care for caregivers and conclude with their vision of a healthcare facility where reiki is fully integrated into the course of healing modalities for both the caregivers and the care-recipients.

In conclusion, Reiki Energy Medicine is quite simply a must-have text for reiki professionals, especially those who are integrating its caring principles and healing practices with other health modalities. I would also highly recommend it for reiki practitioners in general for its value in bringing home the profound, yet gentle realization that reiki can be integrated into every aspect of life to detoxify, heal, and raise the energy of any person and any situation.

Hi I took a class from Libby & Maggie for me it was A Review class. I have an Reiki Teaching and healing practrice. I found the class and the book to be very helpful,in understanding Reiki. It worked well with any level of Reiki or experience that one has with this system. I found the book to be clear and since it was not "airy fairly" I could tell my "main stream" students to buy it without fear that they would be scared away. I liked the clear photo's Angelic Reiki BLessings. Gigi Benanti Norwalk ct

This is more a beginners guide to Reiki in the Medical Profession than anything else. Many of the ideas of where Reiki is from are outdated. Though for the most part the information is based on the Reiki tradition.

I was disappointed by the lack of in-depth techniques and information on HOW to apply Reiki in these situations. This is a "What is Reiki" and "How Reiki can benefit your profession" book. A beginners information guide again. Good for it's purpose.

The one thing I was upset by was the complete lack of discussion on the Ethics in Reiki. Even going so far as to tell people to do Reiki on people before asking permission. To me, a Reiki/Seichim Teacher the Ethics are some of the most important information to pass on.

As an RN, and a CRNA, I found this text especially appealing. Good explanations of just what reiki is about are extremely helpful. As I have just recieved my reiki 1 attunements, I found many of the suggestions very helpful to my practice of anesthesia, and reiki! Thanks and well done!

Is It Worth Dying For?: How To Make Stress Work For You - Not Against You

Is It Worth Dying For?: How To Make Stress Work For You - Not Against YouBuy this book! Learn to refocus the positive aspects of your type A personality for success. Don't let the title fool you. This is not about sitting back in a rocking chair after your first coronary event. Instead, this cardiologist who's as Type A as the rest of us explains how to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em in dealing with personal, professional and day-to-day social hassles. A great chapter on self talk and how it can frustrate adult stress. And a great chapter with quizzes on dealing with stresses. Take the quizzes on separate sheets of paper, date them, share them or have your significant other take them the same way as well. Periodic readings of this book got me from my first MI through 15 years of middle age, an angioplasty, and my recent triple bypass. The physical predisposition to coronary problems was genetic. My successful adjustment to the stress factors was all from the book, discovered as part of my original coronary rehabilitation in 1985. Read this book. Lead a better life. Buy copies for friends! Enjoy!

This book clearly presents solid medical advice about stress, blood pressure and weight. No miracle diets, no junk science, no fads just time tested information presented in a persuasive way. Topics range from adjusting your attitude to improving your exercise and diet.

This book is a great reference that has helped me control my weight and blood pressure without drugs.

I haven't read this book, my husband has. He read it years ago upon doctor's orders when he had an unreasonable, unlikeable, stupid boss. This time I bought the book for a friend. My husband lost his perspective, I believe, when he was going through a bunch of junk with this boss of his. He was the number two man at the place he worked, the editor, trying to protect the integrity of a newspaper against a general manager who really would have "sold the news" the guy was so without soul well, newspapers are down, so he's probably working for a radio for all I know and my husband is happier in another field. But at the time it was wretched for my husband, after five years of arguing with this man, my husband was fired and it was pretty personal, our civic rights were violated which we didn't find out until after we won a lawsuit for other grounds....The point is, when my husband's doc requested my husband read "Is It Worth Dying For?" it put the brakes on where his head was at, all the negativity he could not escape living, breathing, eating, and thinking. No matter what the stress is in someone's life, I highly recommend this book. It is the best action you can take to get you going again, and get you going in the right direction when you are so stressed you don't know what to do next. It should be handed out with every stress pill prescription!

When Someone You Love Has Alzheimer's: What You Must Know, What You Can Do, and What You Should Expe

When Someone You Love Has Alzheimer's: What You Must Know, What You Can Do, and What You Should Expect A Dell Caregiving GuideMy mother was recently diagnosed with 'early stage' Alzheimer's, and this book has been a great starting point for my family to figure out where we go next. It covers the whole gamet of the disease, and has just about everything you'd ever want to know about what to expect as the disease progresses.

An easy read too -which is good because this means that even the person diagnosed with the disease can read and learn from it.

The Curvy Girl's Guide to Style

The Curvy Girl's Guide to StyleI purchased this book after missing the opportunity by one day to meet the author here in Phoenix at Strut Bridal Salon. I ordered this book initially because I liked the message and I am at a place where I am ready to embrace my plus sized self. Once receiving it, I was really disappointed in how short it was. Chastity really just starts to warm up and get going somewhere when the book ends. At under 100 pages of actual helpful text, (which is printed in a sizeable font to begin with), it felt really underdone. I'm going to assume this is because Ms. Garner is to be releasing a series of these books, which, frankly, I feel is a mistake. Why need to release 5 books at 14+ dollars each? All are variations on the same knowledge (dressing for different situations as a plus sized woman.) I would have been happy to spend 40 bucks on a larger text; something along the lines of The Plus Sized Woman's Guide to Style in any Circumstance or something. I would have liked a large reference for myself as a plus sized woman, instead of a series of tiny skinny books about how great it is to not be tiny or skinny. All in all a good idea but don't expect much more than basic knowledge (wear black, don't wear horizontal stripes and know your measurements) and a HUUUUUUGE bibliography section almost as long as the book itself. I would encourage the interested reader to get their copy from the library as you won't need much time to read it, and the knowledge therein is easily retained (as there isn't much to take in). I really feel that this text suffers from its lack of more pages, knowledge, or substance.

I took a risk in purchasing this book, but considering how clueless I am when it comes to dressing myself (having been a jeans and t-shirt girl for the past 3+ years) I was excited to get started.

Firstly, I finished the book without 2 hours. I really did enjoy the book. It made me a bit more confident to wear certain clothes that I wasn't sure would suit me. Chastity also talks a bit more in-depth about undergarments and the various things they can do, and so now I am significantly less intimidated of them. I found that very helpful.

Overall, there are good tips and advice in this book, not a lot of it new or previously unknown.I do still feel it fell just a bit short. I wished there were possibly more illustrations (to show the body types, and show what types of garments she was talking about...though she does describe them decently). It is one thing to say what would work, but once us gals get out there in the real world and try to shop, we really need extra visual aids to see exactly what we should go for. It can be hard enough for a curvy lady to get the guts to go shopping in the first place so that would be helpful. Also, I found myself wishing she talked more about how to find our personal styles, or how to accessorize. Now, Chastity does talk about accessorizing but it would have been helpful if she would show us some illustrated examples perhaps. I know not everyone is as clueless as I am, but alot of curvy women neglect their fashion choices for a long time and so need really all the help that they can get.

Overall I don't regret buying this book, I simply wish it was more comprehensive.

I borrowed this book from the KLL because Amazon thought I'd like it after I read a few Body Acceptance/Health at Every Size-type reads. Warning: the recommendations are NOT accurate. This book is about using shapewear and clothing styles to make a fat body look like a thin one, i.e. be "flattering," not necessarily about accepting your body in the way that it looks.

Pros: Succinctly written, recommends some good websites, takes into account different body types and variations/combinations thereof

Cons: Shallow in terms of self-acceptance -this author seems to promote using shapewear to squeeze yourself into clothes rather than accept your body and love it. Very mainstream (i.e. relatively boring) in its approach to clothing and fashion. Very, very short.

All in all, I prefer the fatshionistas on Tumblr and the like to this book. This book basically is about pinching and squeezing your body into shapewear so that it can look "sleek" in mainstream clothing. To me, it's the equivalent of veg*n food being imitation meat. That works for some people, but it's a lot healthier, cost-effective, and fun to think out of the box.

It's hard to get good advice for girls who aren't size 4. This seems to be sensible and actually useful ---which is not something you can often say about fashion.

The Miracle of Olive Oil: Practical Tips for Health, Home & Beauty

The Miracle of Olive Oil: Practical Tips for Health, Home & BeautyDr. Stanway writes a concise volume on the virtues of olive oil. There is a lot of information about the benefits of olive oil and many practical tips for it's use. Included is information on how the olives are grown and processed and lists of the nutritional properties of olive oil.

There is a section listing various ailments and the proper olive oil remedy and a section of beauty tips. Stanway includes a section on how to choose and use olive oil and I was amazed at the amount of adulteration of the product that goes on in the industry.

She also talks about storage and preservation of olive oil and how easily it can go rancid. For example, choosing olive oil sold in dark bottles, as light causes it to lose it's potency. Included is a section of recipes for everything from salad dressing to olive bread. Being a lover and user of olive oil myself I found the book very useful and informative and I liked the recipes.

Askren's book, on the other hand, is a real treat. Though Askren is obviously an authority on Louisville area hiking, there aren't many guidebooks that are as entertaining as this one. She whets your appetite for exploration with her varied trail selections, and keeps your interest with saucy commentary, sprinkled with a dab of history and topped with suggested side trips. Strong on Defense

Strong on DefenseI can say enough good things about this book. It is absolute must reading. I've taught martial arts for a number of years, and the one thing that has always bothered me ismany of the techniques and skills taught have nothing to do with surviving real life violence. Teaching a woman to punch will not save her from a rapist or carjacker. Strong stresses over and over again how important the will to survive is. He explains that your goal in any violent situation is to ESCAPE that situation with your life. Many systems of martial arts teach the idea or concept of "defeating" the attacker. This is likely the worst mistake you could ever make. It locks you into a struggle with him, it cuts down your chance to escape, you must prevail or perish. A more sensible choice is to attack savagely to buy yourself some room so that you can escape. Everything Strong says is well thought out and logical. He graphically shows what REALLY happens to victims of crime. You need t! ! his information. Reading this book could save you or your family's life. Get it!

This book is not about preventing crime, it's surviving a violent crime. Strong does not concentrate on how to avoid being a victim, instead he tells how to survive the confrontation when you became one. This makes sense, since he states that violence is becaming more and more random and you can became a victim, no matter what you do. There is also some advise on avoiding crime, but the emphasis is not on that issue.

The book is filled with stories from real life. The stories no matter how grim are interesting to read, and the actions of the victims is analyzed after the story. You learn, what the victims did wrong, and what they did right. This makes the book interesting to read, and the "hard text" is also easy to read.

The principles Strong advocates are very simple and easy to remember, even during a crisis. On some occasions his advise seems somewhat farfetched, but on the other hand, it's better be prepared before something bad happens. At the end of the book, Strong gives his formula of making a safer future. His formula is simply putting the criminals behind bars, and keeping them there.

This is a very important book; everyone should read it. It's really sad that we need books like this, but it's a realistic possibility that you can become a victim. If that happens, this book may hold the answers to your survival.

My name is John Perkins I am a forensic crime scene expert, former police detective, martial arts master and the author of ATTACK PROOF. I read STRONG ON DEFENSE when it was first published. I found it to be one of the most powerful sources of information for self preservation anywhere. Many authors of self defense books fall far short in detailing how rapes, assaults and most of all abductions actually go down. Mr. Strong gives you prevention strategies as well as serious workable escape strategies. In all of my classes and seminars this is the main book I tout for all to study. If you are a black belt, a cop, or a regular civilian you will benefit greatly. This makes a superior gift for your loved ones. Make sure that you give it at an appropriate occasion. The information is scary but serious. Good luck-----

This is the kind of information everyone needs. Not only have I read the book all the way through, but on numerous occasions my wife and I have opened it up to re-read sections. We use it for our own protection and as a teaching tool for our kids. I also help out teaching self defense at a dojo and I regularly reference the information in this book. Rather than summarize it, I can only urge you to pick up a copy and read it for yourself. I have yet to read as complete a treatise on the proper mindset for avoiding and/or surviving violent crime.
