Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your Sinuses (Harvard Medical School Guides)

Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your SinusesThis is a good book if you know nothing at all about your sinus condition. However, I had already gathered much of this information from good websites. There were a couple of interesting things that I wasn't aware of, but the bottom line is, how is this going to help me? Is it going to give me new ideas so I can get better? Unfortunately, it didn't. If you've already tried nasal irrigations, decongestants, steroid sprays, antihistamines, possible allergy shots and antibiotics, then you know all you can know about treating sinusitis without surgery. If you are facing surgery, then maybe the chapters on what to expect will be useful.

The information is coherent and well organized. Yes, it is possible one can glean much of the information from other sites on the Internet. However, doing so would take twice as long as reading the book and one can never tell when they are receiving advice from a real doctor or a quack. Everything in this book is backed by a Clinical Professor at Harvard. Not only does that offer peace of mind, it also gives you an upper hand when trying to get the correct medication from your doctor. "I read in this book by Ralph B Metson from Harvard..." goes a lot farther than "I read on an Internet site somewhere..." I wish I could have read this book years ago.

Of note:

The recommended salt usage for nasal wash is a bit high. Some prefer it that high, I recommend doing Internet research and trying less salt at first, ESPECIALLY if you notice a stinging sensation. Never, ever try to force water through a clogged nose!!

The explanation of Zicam in the book is not quite correct. Zicam is *marketed* as homeopathy, but it is not really homeopathic; it actually contains Zinc. Homeopathy is just water.

Also, I was told Atrovent (in that form) was taken off the market.

I picked up a copy of this book because I have sinusitis. I found the book to be extremely helpful in understanding my problems and in instructing what to do about them. It is written in a way that anyone can understand. You don't have to be a doctor to get what the book is talking about, but it didn't seem so basic that it was patronizing like some medical books for non-doctors. I also liked that it was easy to skip around and I didn't feel like I had to read it from beginning to end. Each chapter stood on its own as helpful in and of itself. I would recommend this book to anyone who has sinus problems.

The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses is a valuable resource, which is written in easy-to-understand language that details various sinus conditions, including ones that might seem like sinusitis but are not, and numerous strategies for treating them. In addition, discussions of treatments include helpful thoughts on various methods of sinus surgery, how to prepare for surgery if needed, and what to expect.

I appreciate how, on pages 162-163, Dr. Metson and Mr. Mardon cite empty nose syndrome (ENS) as a "troubling phenomenon," which results from an overly aggressive surgery of the turbinates (inner nasal mucus-producing tissue that performs many critical functions). The description of ENS is accurate, and I am grateful it is noted as a complication of surgery, as not all sinus self-help books acknowledge ENS.

When discussing treatments, The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses mentions zicam, which is the oral spray form of zinc. The authors note while zinc has been shown to reduce the duration of a cold, particularly when used at the onset of symptoms, it must be sprayed into the nose every four hours for one to two weeks to be effective. A word of caution, though, which also should be highlighted, is that spraying high concentrations of zicam in the nose can lead to burning and destruction of olfactory epithelium, the nerve cells responsible for smell. Consequently, some users of zicam have permanently lost their sense of smell.

This book definitely has much useful information on sinusitis from a highly reputable source. It is a great reference book for sinus sufferers.

This is the most comprehensive book I've read on sinuses. It is written so that the average person can understand what goes on inside your sinuses, what the problem areas are, but most importantly, what can be done to get relief. I was also very fortunate to have had surgery by Dr. Metson. Each day I continue to improve and feel like a brand new person. This book is a must for anyone who is suffering. I HIGHLY recommend getting this book.

The Thyroid Solution: A Revolutionary Mind-Body Program for Regaining Your Emotional and Physical He

The Thyroid Solution: A Revolutionary Mind-Body Program for Regaining Your Emotional and Physical HealthI have been living with hashimotos thyroiditis for 18 years. I have been complaining to my Dr.'s off and on for years that I felt like I had symptoms of hypothyroidism, but they kept telling me that the blood tests were normal. After recently having a baby, my thyroid went crazy, and I basically had to tell my Dr. what I thought I needed. This book helped me understand that I was right! He goes into great detail about the fact that you can have a "normal" lab value and yet still suffer from low level hypo or hyper thyroidism!! I found a new Dr and have gotten myself at the other end of the "normal" range.

In addition, those of us with thyroid disease have never been told before that high cholesterol or mild depression can be symptoms of thyroid disease! This book describes all of the bodily functions effected by the thyroid AND what other diseases those of us with thyroid disease may be at higher risk for.

I can't stress enough how much this book described my life for the past 5+ years and how much better it had made me feelI now understand so much better why I have felt the way I have and have a plan for working on the situation.

This is the best thyroid book I have ever purchased and strongly recommend it to anyone with thyroid disease!!

Buy this book as soon as you are diagnosed with a thyroid disorder and read it cover to cover while you are seeking treatment. Even if you are not sure whether you have the disease, it will explain the symptoms so that you can decide whether or not to seek medical diagnosis. Many doctors don't think to look for thyroid disorders, and so it is up to you, the patient, to suggest that they test you. Once they have diagnosed the disorder, they can give you medication, but may not tell you what to expect or how to deal with it.

When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I could hardly function from day to day. The doctor convinced me that by taking a pill I would fully recover in 4-6 weeks. WRONG. The imbalance sent me into a spiral of health problems, anxiety, depression, weight loss, and appetite changes. I almost dropped out of school. I withdrew from friends and family. Even after my blood levels had returned to normal, I lived in a fog of pain and stress and confusion. I was too tired to turn pages in a book. I'm a PhD candidate and I couldn't even complete a sentence!

This book helped me take control of my life from diagnosis to recovery. It listed both the physical AND emotional symptoms that the doctors hadn't bothered to discuss. It told me which blood tests to request, and how to interpret the results. It suggested treatments and allowed me to understand my dosage scale. And MOST IMPORTANTLY it informed me of the complexity of recovery. No one had bothered to tell me that my symptoms might not resolve simultaneously with my blood levels. No one told me that the imbalance may have additional effects for which I may need supplemental medication (for instance, I required anti-depressants). Dr. Arem not only suggests medicinal treatments for these effects but also physical and psychological treatments to help people cope with the disease and aid their improvement. This book told me EVERYTHING the doctors didn't and allowed me to take control of my recovery. Thyroid disorders affect your body AND your mind, and you need to treat yourself holistically. For the first time in almost five months, I am happy and healthy in both body and spirit. But the doctors could not have done it for me. I had to be informed and take control. THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!

I loved this book. I re-read it twice; made notes, and have informed many family members and friends with thyroid disease that this is a must read! As a patient, who had a hard time finding someone to diagnose my own hypothyroidism to begin with, it empowered me, to not give up. Even after my diagnosis fifteen years ago and subsequent Synthroid treatment, I have never felt "well". You start thinking that you must be crazy, if everyone says your hormone levels are fine...you must be fine! Finally, Dr. Arem explains why you may still not feel well after traditional Synthroid treatment, and he gives specific treatment options. Dr. Arem also addresses other diseases, that can occur in addition to thyroid disease, that are often overlooked by other physicians as "typical thyroid complaints". This book is good for people who have just been recently diagnosed with thyroid disease, as well as those of us who have been dealing with the disease for many years. And it will help to enlighten family members who live with thyroid patients.

It is evident from the glowing recommendations that there is not much to add to how valuable The Thyroid Solution has been to patients suffering from thyroid disease. Dr. Ridha is a doctor at Baylor Medical Center, and has plenty of background in treating those who have been undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with thyroid problems. It is recognized that many people suffer needlessly from hypoor hyperthyroidism because their internists or family practitioners are unfamiliar with endocrinology and the symptoms that present themselves. This book helps those who wonder whether they are being properly treated and supplies information in order that they can go to the right doctor. Many doctors don't like it when their patients become educated...tough. As shown by the other recommendations, obviously lives have been changed for the better. That is the yardstick by which we should measure what the medical truth is.

My family has a history of hypothyroidism. Both my grandmother and my older sister have had their thyroids removed. My younger sister was diagnosed with a cancerous bulge on her thyroid at age 3, and they were wrong, but the lump was removed along with part of her thyroid. She consequently had problems becoming pregnant. I've been hypothyroid for years. My internist was checking my peripheral neuropathy for things like MS and other neurodegenerative diseases of the muscles. Nothing came back positive. Yet, when I'd asked him to consider whether I was receiving adequate thyroid hormone, he refused to consider it. I've been lucky to have him test for changes in my thyroid once a year. The book says a known thyroid problem should be checked every 4-6 weeks, especially when the thyroid levels change. So I've been suffering with peripheral neuropathy and some other problems for over two years; I also have spent much of the last seven years anemic, in spite of removal of my uterus and subsequent iron supplementation. My sister led me to this book...she was positive I was not being treated right for hypothyroidism. After reading the book, I am inclined to believe the book and my sister. I have the familial background, the anemia, the deafness, the pins and needles, and too many other symptoms to count. So I have a referral to a known endocrinologist who is listed as a caring and listening doctor.

It's atrocious that physicians can dismiss the intelligence of women, and the ability of them to know their own body. I am tired of such patronizing attitudes, and hope that this doctor will assist me in restoring me to better health. I don't have time for this, and since I have an MS from med school in Neuroscience, I have more then enough background to know when my doctor is missing important signals.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who suspects he or she may have a problem with their thyroid. If necessary, drag the book into the other doctors and force them to pay attention. If they don't, find another doctor.

As a person with hypothyroidism, I have read a dozen or more books specifically on thyroid disease over the last twenty years. In addition I have read approximately forty to fifty professional journal articles relating to hypothyroidism and depression. This was for me the best single source of information that I have found dealing with thyroid disease and depression; and it contains up to date information from a practitioner in the field.

Having read quite a bit about the subject, I am surprised by how many doctors I have spoken to, or read articles written by, that are very out of date in their knowledge of hypothyroidism. Many doctors don't seem to recognize the symptoms of hypothyroidism despite its prevalence in the US population. Most doctors still treat hypothyroidism with the "gold" standard" of levothyroxine (T4) alone, despite there being evidence that a combination of triiodthyronine (T3) and levothyroxine (T4) may work better in some specific cases. For depression, Dr Arem says that he often supplements antidepressant use with cytomel (T3) rather than levothyroxine because of the connection between the distribution of norepinephrine and T3 in the brain (chapter 6). This is in concurrence with what I have been able to find through my research efforts.

The mind-body connection in hypothyroidism is a complicated one, and I thought that Dr. Arem's handling of the subject was done admirably. There is evidence that depression and hypothyroidism can in some people have genetic origins. In some instances hypothyroidism might be caused by infectious agents (viruses). Hypothyroidism might also be induced by stressful events in a person life (chapter 1). All of these are covered at a level that can be understood with perhaps some work required for persons with a light science background.

There are many other areas covered in this book that I won't mention due to lack of space. These subjects include testing procedures (TSH, TRH, T3/T4, etc), and what they mean, finding and talking with your doctor, discussing your illness with your spouse, and infertility. Additionally there is a section on nutrition, diet, and exercise, which can help in hypothyroidism.

I would recommend this book whole-heartedly to anyone with hypothyroidism, depression, or who suspects that they may have thyroid disease.

The New Rules of Lifting for Life: An All-New Muscle-Building, Fat-Blasting Plan for Men and Women W

The New Rules of Lifting for Life: An All-New Muscle-Building, Fat-Blasting Plan for Men and Women Who Want to Ace Their Midlife ExamsThe "New Rules of Lifting" are popular books, especially the version for women: New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift like a Man, look like a Goddess. Now there is a new, updated book by the same authors, with some VERY important additional rules and clarification that are especially important for middle-aged people who work out --and it wouldn't hurt anyone younger to follow these either. A friend of mine who is a trainer remarked once that muscle builds a basis for "padding" that can protect against falls, and can protect against injury in sports as well as helping retain bone mass.

The new rules have a lot to to with the ABS... yes, it is true that abs are made in the kitchen but working the core (the abs) is the key to fitness in this book. For example Rule #1 says the role of the abs is to protect the spine. With so many people suffering back pain, which is entirely distracting and ultimately debilitating, this SHOULD be numero uno and it is.

Rule #2 also has to do with the spine--any exercise that injures your spine CANNOT protect it. That sounds almost self-evident, but how many lifting exercises, done incorrectly (ie, deadlifts) are actually doing more harm than good. Form does matter.

Rule #3 and #4 --forget the "six pack" and bulging abs. You may, genetically, not develop those. But a strong core still protects you and that's what counts. The author is going after strength and stability, not prettiness. This is focusing on what matters--maintaining your strength through middle age and beyond. Again, this can apply to younger people--what you develop in youth and maintain is easier to keep up.

And exercises have been updated; abdominal exercises that put undue pressure on the spine (Russian twists, for example) and other age-old standbys like crunches and hanging leg raises are NO LONGER part of NROL. WOW. What a change. And brave--here's an author who says "I've been in error in some things, I'm correcting that and advising you to change how you work out."

The thrust of the book has changed to core, flexibility, and stability. All you Pilates fans, I am sure are applauding "About time!" and there is a lot here on more effective workouts in the same space of time. There is also much on appetite and eating; for example, if you are ravenous after lifting, good news, this problem of wanting to eat hugely after a workout goes away over time as your body adjusts to the exercise.

Authors Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove are dedicated to have you get the most out of your workouts, yes, aerobics are important for cardio health, yes, muscle strength is important for bone mass and protection, but this new book tunes up your workout, brings in new data and regimens for more effective workouts and focuses on what's TRULY important. If you have previous copies of NROL or NROLW, you should definitely get this new volume. And if you are doing old-skool crunches in an effort to strengthen your abs, you might really want to see what the authors have discovered about abdominal exercise.

The New Rules of Lifting for Life (NRoLfL) is part of a series of strength training books that came out a few years ago. This is the fourth book in the series and follows:

The New Rules of Lifting: Six Basic Moves for Maximum Muscle This is the original book that NRoLfL is based on.

The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess

The New Rules of Lifting for Abs: A Myth-Busting Fitness Plan for Men and Women who Want a Strong Core and a Pain-Free Back

The original NRoL is very similar to Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength. The idea is on doing exercises that focus on large muscle groups (legs, back, chest, etc) and basic movements that involve multiple muscle groups working together, rather than wasting time isolating smaller muscle groups. Often I will see people at the gym who are overweight, doing bicep curls, lat pulldowns, and crunches, while neglecting the huge muscles in their legs and backs. The stronger these muscles are, the more fat you will burn and the higher your fitness level will be.

The New Rules of Lifting for Life is targeted to the middle aged crowd, and those that may have a disability or weakness that prevents them from following the original program. The publisher uses the age "over 40," but this is entirely subjective and it's up to the individual whether they feel the need to modify their routine from the original book. Although I'm not quite "middle age" yet, I have been helping out my father with a fitness program, and took away a lot of information from the book that I haven't seen in any of the dozens of other fitness and training books I've read. I'm not a personal trainer, and as such, don't really know what older bodies are capable of and what might be too much. NRoLfL gave me a better appreciation of how to create an entirely customizable plan to work the critical muscle groups while reducing the probability of injury. It also contains an exhaustive amount of information on what kind of changes you can expect in your body and muscles as you age (starting in the late 20s), and how to work around this eventual breakdown to get optimal results.

All of the basic principles from the original book are there (including the three main rules), but there is much more flexibility in the program that was missing in the first book. I approached this book with a lot of trepidation, wondering whether the authors were just trying to cash in on their same formula by pumping out multiple books. While I do believe that all four of their books could be edited way down, and combined into one amazing resource (the Abs book is a bit redundant), I believe that The New Rules of Lifting for Life is well-developed and provides important information for adapting their original program to be less strenuous while achieving success for bodies that may not be ready for an intense lifting program involving squats and dead lifts. If you have an injury it is especially useful. I used to frequently develop foot and leg injuries from running (before I switched over to barefoot running) and instead of continuing to work out, I would just quit. There are several alternative methods in this book that would now allow me to continue a strengthening program even while injured. There is also information for lifting while overweight, although I generally think that the methods from the original book while work fine unless someone is morbidly obese to the point where they can't do basic movements. And in those cases, a professional trainer and/or nutritionist is going to be better until the person's weight is at a manageable level.

COMPARISON TO ORIGINAL PROGRAM

If you're wondering whether NRoLfL is just the original program with a few chapters on working out at an older age, it's not. It is almost a completely new book. It would have been very easy for the authors to do this, and make a few changes, but this book is almost entirely new material based on the same basic New Rules of Lifting concepts. The original book has 4 different squat exercises, all requiring a squat rack. This book has 9, and several variations, including just using your body weight. They are rated by "level" so you can choose a level you're comfortable with and customize a program based on what you can handle at the time. There are probably three times as many pictures in this book, which give you a much clearer version of how to perform them. All of the pictures appear to be brand new as well. If you are considering passing over this book because you already own The New Rules of Lifting, don't. They are very different in terms of content and work well together. You will find a lot of useful information missing from the original.

I am a strong believer that if you want to lose weight, you need to strength train (and do it right), or you need to do high intensity interval cardio. Sitting on a bike or treadmill for an hour in front of a TV while your heart beats away at a leisurely 135 bpm is not going to be nearly as effective. The New Rules of Lifting series have excellent advice in them, backed by strong scientific and clinical evidence that I usually find lacking in other exercise books. Fitness advice has evolved dramatically over the last twenty years, and the New Rules contains solid information building on the latest (or at least newly discovered) discoveries. Even if you have the original book, The New Rules of Lifting for Life is perfect for those that are over 40, injured, and for personal trainers that want better advice on how to handle these clients. Even though I'm not in these categories yet, I have gained some very useful advice that will leave me better prepared when I am.

Buy The New Rules of Lifting for Life: An All-New Muscle-Building, Fat-Blasting Plan for Men and Women W Now

First, let me say that I'm a fanatic fan of Alwyn Cosgrove, the trainer whose routines are in this series of books. I was also a professional Pilates teacher for seven years and I trained my clients with weights, in addition to Pilates on the machines, when that did not give the results we were looking for. Personally, I've been doing, "Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess" for a few months and it's giving me better results in less time than I ever thought possible. This review compares, "New Rules of Lifting for Life" to "Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess," because I am familiar with, and love, that book.

Most of Cosgrove's workouts are based on the perfect exercise: weight training with intervals; it raises your metabolism in the short term with the aerobic intervals; it raises your metabolism in the long-term by adding muscle mass; and it makes you smaller--muscle is much, much smaller than fat for the same amount of weight.

That said, this book is great in theory. If you have the other books in this series, you won't be disappointed in this one: the diet advice--eat less if you're getting bigger--shows that Lou Schuler has understood metabolism and weight gain. Also, the safety recommendations are extremely useful if you have any injuries. And, there are (even more) exercise variations than there are in the other books, which is great for adding variety.

However, this book is frustrating. It uses equipment that I, as a fairly strong, but 5'4" woman, can't get access to outside of a gym or having a $400 piece of equipment put together for me. There are very few sections that don't rely on some gym-specific pieces of equipment, specifically a power cage with a pull-up bar and a suspension system. You're supposed to be able to do all of the sections, but you won't be able to without the power cage or a gym.

That's not to say his other books aren't equipment intensive, or that I think you shouldn't have exercise equipment: this particular book, like "Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess", also requires a barbell, at least fifty pounds of weight plates, dumbells, step boxes of at least one-and-a half feet, an aerobic step, a Swiss Ball, an incline weight bench, and a piece of aerobic equipment, unless you're planning on running. For me personally, that meant buying a barbell, weight plates and a bench, because I already had a thrift-store-bought $7.00 step bench, a useable-but-missing-a-replaceable-foot $11.00 NordicTrac Pro, two Pilates boxes, an old set of plate barbells, yoga mats and a leaky Swiss ball.

The difference between this and the other book, is that for about $250 to fill in the missing equipment, you can do his other workouts. The equipment used is of the sort that you might, mostly, be able to find in a secondhand store, or barring that, it's the kind of thing you could put together yourself. (Like the incline bench--they usually weigh about 50 to 60 lbs, and you can get a decent one on amazon, new, for about $150.) That's not true with a power cage. It's a $400 piece of equipment that's pretty hard to put together if you're not a guy over 5'10", because it's big and really heavy. (And for those of you thinking you could use a suspension system on a door--that's true, if you live in a house where the doors open out, and mine don't.)

It's really aggravating when you buy a book like this and realize that you either need a gym membership or someone who can help you put together a really large, expensive piece of equipment in order to do any of the routines. Also, unlike some of his other books, there is no in-home substitution offered. One of the things that I love about "Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess", is that there are at-home substitutions for everything except one exercise in an optional set of workouts.

So, if you're a fan of the other books and you want to learn more, or you have a gym membership, or you happen to have a full gym at home, this is a great book. Just don't expect to be able to do all of the exercises if you don't have a power cage.

Pros:

This book is well written, full of useful information, good ideas, a plethora of exercises and a great plan. I have begun the program, and I like it very much. I have been lifted on and off for over 20 years and I have never been this excited about an exercise plan. There are so many options and I get to lift FAST and with only as much rest between sets as I need to catch my breath. On all other programs, including those by these authors, the plans are rigid and the rest is forced. Now I get to vary my choices and I can go, go, go! The plan is a bit complicated, so if you are a beginner, I would suggest reading the book and then doing the basic sample workouts. If you are a veteran, you will have no problem catching on to their ideas. If you are a NROL veteran, you will enjoy the same style and voice while also enjoying a change in pace of the workouts. There are excellent photos of virtually all the exercises.

Cons:

The Kindle Formatting is very frustrating: I bought the Kindle Edition, hoping that with my Kindle Fire, flipping between plans and exercises would be made seamless by the use of hyperlinks from one section of text to another (say from the sample workout plan to each exercise). This way, a user could check the exercise, then hit the "BACK" button to navigate back to the workout page easily. That feature is not available, but that is NOT the only problem with the Kindle Edition of this book.

The real problem is that the photo for each exercise is somehow connected to the text for the exercise previously described, so that using the Kindle as a quick reference tool is very difficult, requiring quite a few clicks. As you use the book, the page almost always changes between a description and its photo--regardless of the text size. You can make the text size very small, but then the next exercise will just have the same problem. For some exercises it is not possible to get the description and the photo on the same page, no matter what. I have also tried to use the Kindle App on my Mac and on my iPhone, and the problem remains.

Good book. Really worth it. Buy the hardcover instead of the Kindle Edition!!

With the fourth installment of their no-nonsense New Rules of Lifting series, authors Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove deliver an outstanding, customizable fitness plan and lifestyle guide to help readers build and maintain fit, mobile and strong bodies long past the mid-twenties when the human body reaches its cellular physiological peak.

The authors present the latest fitness and diet research to support their 24 "Rules", with the entire book constructed around Rule #1 "The older you are, the more important it is to train." Citing recent studies, Schuler and Cosgrove debunk common myths surrounding popular exercise approaches and diets and explain why strength training and weight management are uniquely individual experiences as they outline a plan for every reader to understand his or her own body and individual level of responsiveness to new exercise and dietary stimulus to maximize results from the program.

By far the most valuable contribution of this book is the customizable workout system that allows the reader to select from an impressively large and varied menu of exercises and progressions to achieve their training goals in core, power, strength and metabolic fitness as they progress through three major workout phases Transform your body, Develop your body and Maximize your gains.

These features combine to address one of the biggest obstacles for people trying to make significant leaps forward in their fitness levels -boredom and lack of progress. Custom-building your own workouts will keep the reader engaged and invested in the process, the large variety of exercise variations will keep workouts fun and interesting, and the progression of both the exercises and the three main workout phases challenges the body to avoid dreaded fitness "plateaus".

As in previous volumes, the section on nutrition delivers a superior commonsense, research-backed approach to diet and weight management that provides a clear understanding of the nutrition-fitness relationship and why the body struggles so hard to maintain hard-fought weight-loss achievements. I found particularly interesting the section where the authors debunk a common myth regarding the linearity of weight gain and weight loss and explain the body's adaptive processes for regulating metabolism and appetite. An understanding of such concepts as provided by the authors is, to me, central to implementing any effective fitness and weight management program.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fitness, especially to novice lifters looking for a way to progress rapidly and to veteran lifters looking for a new, interesting way to stay fit as their bodies age and impose new conditions for continued progress.

Makeup Makeovers in 5, 10, 15, and 20 Minutes: Expert Secrets for Stunning Transformations

Makeup Makeovers in 5, 10, 15, and 20 Minutes: Expert Secrets for Stunning TransformationsI enjoy Robert Jone's books very much, this is the third of his collection that I have purchased. His looks are very wearable and modern, the instructions are clear and he uses a nice range of skin tones, face shapes, etc., to display his creations. Ethnic groups are well represented here, the models are fairly young, appearing to be in their 20's 30's ("young" being relative, of course). I also admire the fact that, outside of the brushes that he uses (which he also sells) his tools and makeup colors are easy to come by, and he creates a great deal of glamor with just a handful of basic, timeless colors.

Nothing here is edgy (Rae Morris) or an obvious homage to vintage style (Kevyn Aucoin), and there is an odd sort of sameness to the looks since each of the photographs, although beautifully photographed for detail, are staged in almost the identical manner. I have found that of these makeup styles, the ones that flatter me most are where the model has the same eye size and shape, since that is where Robert's focus is; the blush, lipstick application stray very little from look to look, varying only in color/texture/intensity.

My only issue is the 5, 10, 15, 20 minute timeline, which does not include the application of concealer, foundation, powder, or contouring. All of these looks start the clock running with the assumption that you have already prepared your face, which may not be an issue for someone with flawless, youthful skin at which point steps can be achievable in the time indicated with a bit of practice. To his credit, Robert does an excellent job of going through the preparation process at the beginning of his book (probably his best guide ever), but, for me at least, the prep work takes a good 5 10 minutes on it's own. Such are the joys of advancing age and the ravages of time.

On the other hand, I have yet to come across any makeup routine that works for me in under 15 minutes, so this may just be an completely unobtainable goal on my part. If anyone out there can write that book, I promise to pay good money for it.

Final word: if you enjoy makeup and toying around with different looks you will find this a good addition to you beauty book library, extended timeline and all.

Loved this book! Very stylish and modern looks, all of them absolutely suitable for everyday wear some are for parties etc, though, but very elegant. This book could have a title "Elegant and polished everyday looks"! Detailed instructions for every look, with many pictures. A beginner can use it with great success, and a pro will find some nice ideas, too. Highly recommend this book to anyone. For a beginner: this one and R.Jones' "Makeup makeovers:Expert secrets..." (or his "Looking younger: Makeovers...") will make a great make up school for you.

I am a huge fan of Robert and I think he is the best MUA out there. Youalways look natural not overly made up and all of his looks in this book are very wearable. I am also a member in his Beauty Academy which is fabulous!!

I have 2 of his other books and couldn't imagine another one that would be better than the other 2. I don't think this one is so much better as different. My only issue with this book is I wish he would of put what brands he is using. Some of the shimmer contours are different than I have seen and would like to know what company makes these.I know other makeup artist who write books (Carmindy) always puts in her book the name of the makeup product and the company other than that this book is fun, helpful and the pictures are just beautiful. But next time I would like to see more mature women, these women are all very young.

i got this on my kindle. althought I'm not finished w/ this book , so far I'm satisfied. it shows you different type of looks and in some ways, some of the steps and brushes they tell you to use is very repetitive which is nice. Only disappointment is that I was really trying to find a tutorial on how to do eyes and contouring. this book pretty much just tells you to put color on the crease from the outside corner in, or put color/contour the outer 3rd of the eye, etc. but doesn't tell you how to do it.
