When Can I Go Home?

When Can I Go Home? How often has illness in oneself inspired action rather than revolt? "When Can I Go Home?" by Joseph J. Sivak is a prime example of just that scenario. Having had to take the reins of running a household and caring for an afflicted parent at the tender age of seventeen, Joseph had to grow up rather quickly. He witnessed firsthand the havoc that Alzheimer's can wreak on the mind of one he held very close to his heart....his own mother. Seeing the disease up close and personal moved this young man so deeply, he chose a career path that would not only put him in contact with this and other ailments like it for the rest of his days, but also offer the chance to help lessen its effects for future "victims"; he became a doctor.

This is a firsthand account of the disease that is Alzheimer's and its debilitating effects on the patient as well as they're family. This is also a story of hope and proactive action to help others goings through similar situations reach a better understanding of what is happening and ways in which to cope. Recommended reading for people in both situations as a reminder that they are not alone in their fight.....

Author: Joseph J. Sivak M.D.

ISBN: 978-0-615-31489-1

Publisher: Niagara Press

Joseph J. Sivak's When Can I Go home is an exceptional memoir written with abundance of warmth and dramatic power that will keep you continually captivated until its final chapter. It is a far cry from the many mundane books concerning Alzheimer's disease, as it avoids dwelling on the technical aspects of this dreaded and incurable disease. Rather, it presents a poignant narrative of the author's agonizing journey as a caregiver at the age of seventeen, when his sixty-two year old mother was diagnosed in 1979 with Alzheimer's-an era when most people never even heard of the disease.

Dr. Sivak points out the parent-child roles were reversedit all seemed surreal. It was as if his life was de-railed from the one he had planned to travel as a teenager. He was picked off his own train tracks and placed into a new setting. He states: "The confusing emotions associated with caring for my mother seemed to tear me into different pieces. Part of me was the child wanting his mother, part was angry and trapped and just wanted to grow up, while another part was the emerging compassionate caregiver." In passing, his mother's diagnosis occurred one year after he had lost his father, making it even more difficult for him to accept and process. Nonetheless, he managed to continue to move on, and his experiences would eventually serve as a touchstone when he became a Psychiatrist, later in life. His anger, frustration and eventual helplessness that emerged from feeling trapped were paired together with and perhaps partially alleviated by his emerging compassion and his development of his personality into that of a caregiver. He recounts that his chosen profession as a psychiatrist and the work he does everyday became a benchmark and symbol for the development and refinement of his compassion. As a side note, Dr. Sivak mentions that ironically the very thing that disciplined him and spurred him to work hard during his pre-med student days and subsequent acceptance into medical school was his mother's illness. And his acting as a caregiver to his mother, which he describes as his principal extracurricular activity, probably turned the tide in his favor in being accepted into medical school over many other well-qualified students.

Interwoven into this extraordinary book is Dr. Sivak's professional experiences as a psychiatrist concerning individuals confronted with Alzheimer's disease, either as a patient or caregiver. He reminds us that it is not an easy task to walk the line of educator, mentor, advocate and guide. Brought to light are the multitude of sticky and demanding issues that physicians face when making a diagnosis of Alzheimer. As he spells out, it is essential to know, provide, translate and break down all the data patients share with you, what they need and want. And in the final analysis help them decide what is in their best interest. Many times there exists a high emotional level of family members when they are informed that a loved one has this incurable disease, frequently leading to displaced anger on the physician. Another challenge is that physicians must be very cautious not to say the wrong thing or say the right thing in the wrong way. As clarified: "Such concepts as giving up driving entering a nursing home, and even making a possible diagnosis must be approached gingerly. Every patient and every family possesses and handles information differently."

When Can I Go Home is an emotionally charged and unique moving journey, wherein the author narrates a finely tuned story in a voice that blends two perspectives; one that portrays a young lad burdened with the task of caring for his mother with an incurable disease, the other, this same individual, acting as a physician called upon to treat countless victims of Alzheimer's, as well as other mental diseases.

Perhaps, someday this disease will be conquered. Until then, and as Dr. Sivak elegantly summarizes, "if you are caring for a loved one with the disorder, then love them, and love them more each day, as if they were your infant or child. No one deserves this illness, no family deserves the devastation." Just as we are human beings with emotions and spirits, so are your loved ones, even though they may be afflicted by Alzheimer's.

Joseph J. Sivak creates a powerful book "When Can I go Home." This book spoke to me on such a personal level. My grandmother has this awful disease and I have watched my Mother struggle to help her. The question she asks most often is "When Can I Go Home?" The topic and title immediately drew me in. Sivak is a strong writer that is able to convey emotion on a very strong level. This book is about a 17 year old boy who must not only accept his mother has this awful disease but he must be her caregiver as well. I felt so bad for him because I can't imagine how hard it would be to deal with the loss of your mother as you know her and care for this new confused person. The author shows the power of love through this caring son. This book also teaches a lot about the disease and contains medical perspectives and information. I highly suggest that anyone dealing with alzhimers pick up a copy of this book.

Moms are the people, we as children come to believe as "the rocks" of the home. They are the people who provide us the love, support and emotional salvation when we need it to take care of the problems of our youth. What happens when this is taken from you as a teenager and the other family members around are too clinical to remind themselves what it was like to be a kid again? Not everything can be written on a document and stated this is the way it will be and then move on to handle the outcome.

There has to be time for all the emotions to come through and a chance for them to be worked out. In this story "When Can I Go Home" by Joseph J. Sivak, who loses his father at the age of sixteen to find out his mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of seventeen can become a little overwhelming. Even if there are five other siblings in the family, he was still alone within himself and this struggle of trying to figure things out. This book is his journey, his thoughts, how he made it through and in the end his success story of how he found his way. This is not a book for the weak and it will make you think. There are so many people today that are in reversed roles, children taking care of their parents.

Knowing that you are not alone, having the knowledge of support centers and people to talk to are more available now than what was available in the past. You always hear that everyone has their own cross to bear, but when it is your mother, your father, your wife, your child or even a close loved one then you are also losing part of your support system to help you. I'm glad they author was able to share his story. Others will enjoy reading this man's journey as much as I did. I am sure today he is a much better doctor because of his experiences.

Alzheimer's can change everyone's life when it affects you personally and is living with you in your home taking over someone you love. Is it because we have to adapt to the person and how they are acting with the disease or is it because we feel that we have to learn and know so much about it so we can help the person affected so we can provide them everything they need? How can not affect everyone's childhood and living arrangements? Someone always has to be there to help provide coverage. Your duties are outlined and you are only a child. "When Can I Go Home?" by Joseph J. Sivak is a book that reveals his mother who suffers from Alzheimer's and how he has to help with her care. The author tells of his journey, he just loses his dad and a year later find himself in a care giver role at the age of seventeen when he should be figuring things out for himself. The underlying message I saw being in a similar situation was that this was a role that was preparing him for his future and was helping him figure it out, but it was the hard way. If you would like to read about a journey and all the pressure points and glory a family can hold through such a wicked disease then pick up this book. It will give you an unexpected perspective of how we cannot always control the things we want but do the best we can with what we have. This is a very good book and you will enjoy reading it.

An Introduction to Reiki: Healing Energy for Mind, Body and Spirit

An Introduction to Reiki: Healing Energy for Mind, Body and SpiritThis beautiful little book drew my attention when I was "browsing" the natural health shelf at a local bookstore, not looking for anything in particular, just wondering what would call out to me. I knew nothing about Reiki at the time. But I loved what the title addressed: healing energy for mind, body and spirit. That's for me! So I paged through to find a world of beauty: Beauty in the graceful layout and generous number of lovely photographs. Beauty in the simple text that serves as a beginner's guide to Reiki: it's history and principles; the healing treatments involving the endocrine system, seven chakras, emotions and basic hand positions; first aid practices to relieve headache, back pain, stress and other common ailments; special treatments for children, the elderly, pets and plants; Reiki and other therapies such as color and crystal healing.

It truly was an introduction that motivated me to study more, find a Reiki teacher and learn to treat myself and others with Reiki as a spiritual way of life. Though I have since read many other worthwhile books, more detailed or inclusive, I still go back to this beauty for inspiration and guidance.

It's not as informative as it could be. In fact, you're probably better off doing a couple of Google searches for 'reiki' than you would be buying this book, unless you were looking for an outline of the discipline. For what it is, it's not bad.

The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary Acts

The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary ActsSo good for anyone who wants to get over whatever is keeping them from moving their body if you're fat, if you're scared of locker rooms, if you have a mobility impairment, if you think you're too old, if you're afraid of looking ridiculous, whatever. Blank has you covered.

I really, really wanted to be able to rate this book five stars. In the end, I couldn't quite do that.

The book is very well written; it's lively, witty, and fun to read. It's also well-structured and very accessible. Blank's bluntness about the plight of plus size people (and anyone else who doesn't fit the mold of young, slim, and athletic) and how it can affect their body practice psychologically is refreshing, to say the least. She put many of my emotions that I previously couldn't find expression for into words, clear cut and simple. I found this aspect of the book to be inspiring and encouraging...simply knowing that you're not alone in your fear and doubts is so important to getting through any complicated emotions. I particularly like her statement that you do NOT exist to decorate the world for others, which is something that holds many of us (women in particular) back from living freely, fully, and in the moment. I also liked the inclusion of a resource guide, although I didn't find it quite as helpful as I had hoped.

With all that said, I was really hoping for more practical guidance. She does include some, but it seemed to me the bulk of the book centered around encouraging you to get out there and just do it, rather than telling you HOW to do it. Most of the practical advice she does give centers around the gym. Since I don't use gyms (partially for emotional/psychological reasons addressed in the book, but also in large part because of an array of more practical concerns), I didn't get much out of it on that end of things. I was really hoping for more outside-of-the-box suggestions and practical guidance.

In the end, this book is a great motivational tool for those just getting started, and/or those who simply need to see how very not alone they are. But I did not get out of it what I had hoped to, that being a practical guide to expanding an already existing body practice. If you're looking for more of a mental/emotional guide, this book may be for you!

I've been telling folks that the theses of this book are "there is no wrong way to have a body" and "I can move however the heck, wherever the heck, whenever the heck, and whyever the heck I want to, and haters can get out of the way" (I might not have used "heck" when talking to folks.

This book gave me a whole new language and perspective to think and act on incorporating movement and fitness into my life. It reminded me that I can and should have a "body practice" just because it makes me feel awesome, and that changing my size doesn't have to have anything to do with it!

But be advised, as mentioned in a few other reviews, this is NOT the large textbook version. IF you're looking for a good first aid guide, this is it.

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies: Quick Fixes, Clever Techniques, and Uncommon Cures to Get You Feeling Better FastI guess since its the DOCTORS version of HOME remedies they are going to send you to the drug store first for most everything. I was really hopeing for more at home remedies. Im all into natural cures that most docs dont even know about. No where did it reccomend the plant plantain for bug bite itch. It did have the bananna peel remedy for warts but it was in a small side box after it reccomended you get compound W from the store. Im not hapy with it at all. I was looking for HOME remedies. Most of the book is common sense, like for bug bites it tells you not to get bit in the first place. DUHHH. I guess I was looking more for homeopathy not what the doctor will tell you. You know the stuff you gr grandmother would have done. This book is going in the yardsale!

Namaste

I checked out several home remedy books from the library and this one was by far the most informative, most thorough and most interesting. It describes the illness/injury in detail and gives multiple suggestions for at home remedies to keep you out of the doctor's office. But it also tells you when to go to the doctor. The book is full of common sense advice and remedies that include items that most people would have at home or could easily get from the drug store. If you're looking for a book of natural remedies that strictly uses herbs, essential oils or pressure points you might want to keep looking.

Bratislava, 2nd

Bratislava, 2ndThis guide book is absolutely wonderful!

It is the first guide I found which really does justice to this fabulous city and doesn't push a few lines into the back of a guide book about the Czech Republic.

It has fascinating details on the complicated history and culture and what looks like an insider's guide to the hip restaurants, cafes and bars.

The eating and drinking section is a pleasure to read on its own, as it is really witty and well-written and I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to know the city better.

Many people say that there is not much to do in Bratislava, but obviously they could not have had this guide.

It is impossible to be bored in Bratislava with this guide, there are dozens of suggestions of day trips, where to stay, eat and drink and some excellent walking tours of the city.

After reading this guide from cover to cover, I can't wait to visit Bratislava and try out the revolving TV tower restaurant on Kamzik hill or the UFO cafe in a flying saucer spacecraft. They sound like such fun destinations!

The pocket-sized Bradt guide is also great as it really does fit in your pocket or hand-bag and is easy to carry everywhere I go.

This small guide, easy to pop in a pocket, provided us with just about all the information we needed for planning a short stay in this city. Terrific!

Deadly Daffodils, Toxic Caterpillars: The Family Guide to Preventing and Treating Accidental Poisoni

Deadly Daffodils, Toxic Caterpillars: The Family Guide to Preventing and Treating Accidental Poisoning Inside and Outside the HomeThis book is a medical emergency feather-weight.I would not recommend thumbing your way through it,in the event of a real situation.I would say you should read through it beforehand, and familiarize yourself with some of the tragic scenerios.Eighty percent of the first actions for aid is to call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222).Well,that seems like common-sense.It basically gives minor first aid suggestions before getting real assistance from medical professionals. The knowledge is of value for novices and technicians alike. How to handle accidental medication and herbal overdoses. How to handle toxic plants, shrubs, trees, and mushrooms.Recognising toxic snakes and poisoness toads. Avoiding dangerous stinging insects.Chemicals to avoid being tangible with.Microscopic water creatures around that should be avoided.Being wary of food poisoning,at home and in the market-place.Keeping your kids safe from poisons in the nursey and playroom.Setting safeguards for your curious pets. And a complete list of resources concerning poison prevention and response. This book is a good guide to read over and keep on hand.Yet,two problems with the book.Firstly, you should be familiar with any potential stressful emergency situations beforehand. And that may be impractical .And more first aid knowledge should be presented, beyond just contacting Poison Control for instructions.Luckily, your cell phone is commonplace thesedays and is of valuable assistance in itself.

Advanced First Aid Afloat

Advanced First Aid AfloatI'm very happy to be the first reviewer of this, but a little suprised since it means there are a lot of sailors who don't know what's in this great book.

Levinson and Eastman (both physicians and active sailors) did a great job laying out serious medical problems in a way that even I can understand them. Also, they give readable scenarios that help put these accidents in context. A good example is the opening chapter, which goes into a story of a helmsman who wasn't paying close enough attention, and from an accidental jibe, suffered a head impact from the boom, leaving him out cold on the side deck.

Situations like that are real, and the authors have certainly laid out sound and solid advice for keeping your crew (and yourself) safe. The only reason I'm dinging a star from them is because I wish it could have been a bit bigger to cover even more.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that this book is written in a wonderfully dry sense of humor that can help take the shock out of traumatic situations. Dr Eastman's M.A.S.H. background shows through.

For example, his chapter on burns begins:

"Your trawler, 'Nomad', is rolling along in a heavy following sea, half way between Turtle Bay and Cabo San Lucas, at a comfortable 10 knots. It's 1200 , Tuesday: the galley slave lights off the fires for lunch.

"A maverick wave tosses 'Nomad' onto her beam ends. there is a scream below and the cook skyrockets up the companionway, hair and clothes ablaze.

"First, put out the fire. Don't get burned yourself. Roll him on the deck, wrap him in foul weather gear-anything that's handy.

"He sits on the cabin floor; he shivers with fright and pain, an awesome sight hair and eyebrows singed away; bits of burned clothing hanging on his chest and tummy. He smells like an overdone steak.

"1. Control pain and fright.

a. Cover all burned ares with cool towels, wrung out in fresh water if you have it).

b. Give him 100 mgms (2cc) of Demorol by I.M. injection (see Fig 7)."

... and so on.

I am not a doctor but both my sister and brother in law are and both are sailors. They say the advice is spot on and bang up to date.

I can't recommend the book too highly.

Budgeting for Infertility: How to Bring Home a Baby Without Breaking the Bank

Budgeting for Infertility: How to Bring Home a Baby Without Breaking the BankThough at first I was skeptical at any book about the financial side of infertility, I realized a few pages into the book that the average reader would not only gain back the $16 spent on the book, but would probably save a minimum of several hundred dollars or more over the long run.

It doesn't just give you ways to save money, it gives you ways to understand how things relate to you financially on a personal level. For instance, it isn't helpful to make a statement about shared-risk plans without explaining how they work and who should use them. Financing can never be a one-size fits all approach.

And at the very least, the book helps you think outside the box and consider ways to save money on medications, treatments, and testing. It explains how to navigate insurance companies and how to find clinical trials. It explains fertility grants and scholarships and how to find them. But above all, it gives you the confidence to take charge of the financial side and understand how to budget for treatments.

I would like to personally thank the authors of this book. I am just starting my infertility journey. I am in my late 30's and it truly puts things into perspective. I often think with my heart and not my mind. This really helped me take a moment to think things through to prepare for the upcoming decisions that will need to be made with my treatment.

Fortunately I have a background in medical insurance so I know what to expect from my insurance carrier. For those that have no clue about their coverage (if they even have coverage to begin with), this book will arm you with everything you need to research your coverage so you aren't hit with a big surprise. I was very appreciative of the ICD9 codes that were included in the book. It is nice to have them for a quick easy reference.

I was amazed at all of the suggestions that were supplied for financing your treatment as well as the frankness of what to expect expense wise and how not to be taken advantage of (what areas that are possible money pits if you will).

I have only touched base briefly on the content of this wonderful reference tool. It is a must have for anyone even remotely thinking of seeking infertility treatment.

Thank you again for taking the time to put this together.

This should be your first stop when you begin your journey of dealing with Infertility. The authors have done us (who deal with this issue) a TREMENDOUS service. The book is clearly written, Informative, and amazingly empathetic. The more we read, the more we were encouraged. As the title of the book suggests, the authors present all the basic expenses regarding numerous Infertility treatments/options, especially IVF, and what course(s) makes the most sense. The book is interspersed with real life experiences that make you feel that you are not alone in this and helps to prevent you from making similar mistakes. Sterling and Best-Boss definitely understand the physical, emotional and financial strain that Infertility causes and this book demonstrated this; they explain how to prepare for clinical visits and where to get help. There are instrumental references that the authors directs the reader to (i.e. organizations & websites for various needs such financial grants, support g groups, blogs, general information, etc.). We have found grants that we probably would not have found on our own. The comments from other reviewers on Amazon ring true! I will leave with a quote from the book that we have found to be absolutely true,

"This is the only book available to help you understand the nuts and bolt of financing your family, including: how fertility clinics work, how you can save money on all aspects of your care, and how to maximize your insurance benefits to your advantage. Armed with this resource, you are better prepared to build your family."
