Fitness Illustrated

Fitness IllustratedYou know what I like about this book? Everything is BIG. Now before you think it's like a kindergarten book, let me say that it isn't. There's tons of information here--personal stories, training plans, nutrition, physiology, to name a few topics--all presented so you want to read it. Open this book to any page and the illustrations invite you with color, a font size that you can read easily (I think it's 14 point for body text), lots of photos of men and women of all ages (as a middle-age woman I'd like to say thank you very much) and all races. These are real people doing their exercise thing, not professional models. Even if you're an elite athlete, though, this book has something for you, too.

There are "Fit Facts", which are useful bites of information with practical value like avoiding muscle soreness, how to eat for your fitness level, how to train for your goals, etc. This is a great book and it's different from other books of its same subject because it's so broad. There's even cell biology in this book, which bolsters a lot of common knowledge with hard science. There are personal success stories, too, of normal people struggling with health and fitness, what they did, what changed, and how they are now. Very inspiring. And this book breaks it down into plans by the week or even the day to show you what to do one step at a time to meet your goals. It's like having a personal trainer right there in your hands whenever you need one.

This is an awesome book, and I've gotten away with something by receiving it in exchange for a review. Human Kinetics publishes Dance Anatomy and Stretching Anatomy as well, and this book uses the same great graphics. No matter what your fitness level or your sport of choice, there's something in this book for you. Anyone who cares about fitness, exercise, or health should have this book in their library. Appendix on energy expenditures by activity; bibliography, and index.

An excellent book! Easy to understand language and good illustrations covering all aspects of fitness. It talks about the benefits it terms of what it does for you body, aerobic and muscle fitness, nutrition, and weight control. Sample programs that help get you started on your own program are provide but with the proviso that you need to work out a program that suits you. It follows up with health issues, facts and fallacies and discussion on longevity. It is geared to the beginner and intermediate range. Example exercises with good illustrations are provided along with energy expenditure charts. Enjoyed the Fit Facts sidebars (

I'm at a point in my life where I have little time for reading...yet I still love to dig deeply into information on subjects I enjoy. It's rare that I find a book, especially a fitness book, that gives such great depth of knowledge in such an easy-to-read and understand, visually appealing fashion. This does. Unlike most books, it uses more visual tools than words (although there are both) to work.

I was going to post some photos of the book open because it's really different than most books and hard to get across in a review...however, I see that you are able to look at excerpts of the book's pages here under the book's posting. I suggest doing so to best understand the difference.

The book is over 300 pages of full-color, graphically designed, glossy pages. Every page is thoroughly, thoroughly (did I mention thoroughly?) well-thought out design-wise to show the reader not only through words, but the best pics possible exactly what they are conveying. And it also keeps one's interest better, much like flipping through a Men's Health or Women's Health magazine...they are full of learning, but enjoyable to read as well.

I consider myself somewhat of an expert on fitness...I teach weightloss classes, I strive to workout to various routines as much as possible, and I enjoy reading as much as I can on the subject...but, by golly, this taught me WAY more on both weight loss and training in almost a "crash course" as I've ever had.

And, consequently, I've lost 10 lbs this month (and I was small to begin with) simply by greater knowledge of training, endurance, fat burning, aerobic fitness training, intensity, duration...It may all be understood but not "stick" as it does when you have the visual examples, illustrations, pictures and diagrams that make it stay wtih you and be so well understood. They even use examples of people training...pictures, stories, drawings of the changes and go in depth into workout routines and how to do them correctly and safely. While I get that training in DVDs, they REALLY go in depth into getting the most from it by doing it right. But that's at the end of the book...before you ever get there I guarantee you you'll be pushing yourself harder than you ever have before knowing why you should, knowing the difference between aerobic and cardio, knowing what will really change your body and health and mind and energy.

New to fitness? Expert? It supports in depth learning for both. If you are new to it, you'll go in doing it right, better and faster. If you think you know it all I guarantee you you'll learn more and do it better...at least I did.

Yes, it's a raving review and no, I have no tie to this publisher or authoer...but it impressed me greatly. At a time where I am pushing aside all my books, I read this cover to cover and it changed many things I do and, in turn, it changed my body and muscle tone. For that, I can't help but be a raving fan.

Negatives? I try to leave negatives in all my reviews even on products I love in order to give a full and complete picture...I have none. If I had done the book myself, I wouldn't have changed it...especially for a visual learner like myself, it was so very easy to understand.

Note: I received a free review copy of this book from the publisher.

As the title suggests, this over-sized paperback is a colorful fitness guide filled with both photographs and illustrations highlighting the text. In fact, the vibrant style in which the book is written is reminiscent of magazine articles--i.e., all of the information is broken down into brief, manageable chunks, with much of the content presented via charts, graphs, and other easily-accessed formats.

Author Brian Sharkey begins with the basic questions of what are the benefits of being physically active and how much physical activity is needed. From there, Sharkey goes on the address the various components of a fitness program in detail, beginning with aerobic fitness. Bright, clear graphics simplify the science behind aerobic fitness training; Sharkey also provides charts to keep track of factors such as daily activity index, BMI, rate of perceived exertion, and more. Using all of the above elements plus a number of personal vignettes, Sharkey helps the reader to put together an individualized aerobic training program. Sharkey takes a similar approach to muscular fitness training, from providing readers with self-tests to customizing a muscular program which includes both stretching and core work.

The book includes a chapter on Nutrition and Weight Control (although little is said on the latter). Here Sharkey reviews the basic structures of the human diet, including protein, carbohydrates, and fats, as well as covers topics such as the glycemic index, portion sizes, antioxidants, and vitamins/minerals. The final few chapters provide additional tips on dealing with common problems that can arise (e.g., muscle soreness, cramps), separating exercise facts from fiction, and staying active throughout one's life span. Finally, there is an Appendix which estimates the number of calories burned during various activities, even things like shopping, carrying small children, and moving furniture.

Overall, I found this to be a user-friendly, easy-to-read book filled with basic fitness information. However, as someone who already works out daily and is quite knowledgeable about health and exercise, this guide did not offer me anything new. Therefore, I would limit my recommendation of FITNESS ILLUSTRATED to those who are exercise novices and/or who are looking for a comprehensive manual of simple information all in one place.

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Colds and Flu

The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Colds and FluI thought it offered many good tips over and above the"wash your hands" idea. I loved the many preventative ways suggested to keep myself and my family healthy. I also really appreciated the many ideas on supplements and whole foods to take in case one caught a cold or a flu. I would highly recommend the book.

Strength Training Past 50 - 2nd Edition (Ageless Athlete Series)

Strength Training Past 50 - 2nd EditionAt 67 I had developed upper back pain associated with spinal arthritis. Upon the advice of a reviewer, I ordered the book, bought some free weights, and immediately began training to strengthen the muscles that support my spinal column. After a month of carefully following the recommended workout schedule, I found myself completely pain free. Although the results are proof of the pudding, I was particularly impressed with the authors' emphasis on safety and their guidance on how to find your point of beginning and to progress without injury.

The photos and descriptions of individual exercises were essential in making sure that the exercises were done correctly and to the greatest benefit.

In my opinion the price of the book is a gift compared to the feeling of well being derived from carefully following the given plan, which, by the way, is adaptable to each individual's capabilities and needs.

Strength Training Past 50 is a very good book and anyone past 50 who has an interest in fitness or has been directed by a physician to lose weight should read the book. The program in the book must be carefully followed, particularly the weight and repitition recommendations. This program was designed for a very broad age range and a broad range of physical fitness levels typically found in adults past 50. It's strength is that it is an excellent introduction to resistance training for those who have not lifted or have not lifted for a significant period of time. If you are 50 or older, male or female, and not an experienced lifter, you may expect to lose weight, gain muscle mass, energy, and a positive self image by following the program in this book.

Pros:

A very good intro for boomers who have never done strength training and want to get into it. A lot of other strength training books target an audience who are potential Incredible Hulk wannabees. Excellent recommendations for weight selection, exercise frequency, repetitions, etc. based on scientific studies. Also good training programs targeted for those in the 50+ crowd. But you must keep in mind that the range 50-90 is a very broad range.

Cons:

The discussion on equipment options is very light. I would say it is inadequate. The worst part of the book is the organization of the exercises. They are grouped by the area of muscle exercised such as Upper Body. Within this group various exercises for machine, barbell, and dumbell are mixed in together. If you are using only dumbells, then when following the recommended training sequence of exercises, you are flipping all over the book skipping past the irrelevant exercises. And, no, the exercises are not indexed. I think a further organization of exercise by equipment (or at least a table or index) would have been helpful.

Overall, though, the book is a big help for someone like me (fifties) just getting into strength training. A couple of more good books covering equipment and a wider range of exercises, and you're all set.

I'm ordering a second copy of this book for my brother. I've shared my first copy with a number of friends. The introduction -which outlines the value of weight training at any age -is worth the modest price. I've followed the book for a year since I bought the book, and have seen steady gradual progress in weight reduction and increased strength. Not a quick-fix approach, but instead a well-written plan to incorporate weight training into daily life, for both men and women. Geared towards newcomers, but also has information that will those with prior exercise experience. It stresses safety and gradual improvement.

As someone who is both older and an experienced weightlifter I can tell you that there were many errors in this book. For one thing it did not warn the reader against the leg extensions if he or she has bad knees. They can blow your knees in a heartbeat.

It also gave odd weight recommendations. In one area it gave a starting weight of 60lbs. There are few older people who can or should lift 60lb, at least to begin with. But in other areas of the book it used such recommendations as 10lbs, more reasonable but too high for many fragil oldsters.

The nutrition area was not current either. But it wasn't bad.

Some of the studies it quotes are good and motivational. But you can read those elsewhere. They simply give the many benefits of weightlifting for all people --especially older people. And that's a good thing.

I would recommend a book like Strength Training Anatomy or a book by Dave Draper or Clarence Bass, both oldsters and great bodybuilders. Beyond that, each person should adjust each exercise to his own limitations and health conditions and not follow any set guidelines. If it hurts, don't do it. There are hundreds of wonderful, powerful exercises you can do that won't hurt you. And you'll build all the muscle and lose all the fat you want.

And by the way, there is a wonderful ebook called "Lose the Fat Feed the Muscle" that I recommend to all ages. It's written by bodybuilder Tom Venuto and is about the best book on this subject I've read in a long time.

Save your money on this book and buy one that will help you. But whatever you do --DO LIFT WEIGHTS! It will make you a new person at any age.

Natural Cures for Diabetes: Reverse Diabetes Quickly Through the Power of Natural Cures

Natural Cures for Diabetes: Reverse Diabetes Quickly Through the Power of Natural CuresI have used Dr. Ingrams products for 2 years now and I still have my liver, unlike "DRUGS" that have been know to cause death in some cases and other complications. Just look at your television and watch the "drug" commercials and listen to the side effects.

Anyone who says that Dr. Ingrams products are not working for them then they must be doing something wrong.

I had a serious toe nail infection went to a drug store and the druggist said i would need a doctors note to get a product called lamisil a drug that she said would destroy my liver if i were to use it. She then whispered to me to go to a health food store and see what they have. I did and now no toenail fungus. Using the oil of oregano and oragamax.

It works and works well.

This is the best book I've read on natural diabetes cures so far! What appeals to me the most is that the author doesn't hold back. He states that all diabetes patients regardless of whether they suffer from type 1 or 2 diabetes have a good possibility of being cured by following the precepts in this book.

The first chapters are devoted to impressing upon us the absolutely poisonous nature of sugar. And rightly so.

We are informed that the cause of diabetes is not just faulty insulin secretion by the pancreas nor "diabetic genes". Insulin cannot cure diabetes, on the contrary it damages liver cell function. The cause of diabetes is our atrocious high-sugar diet leading to dysfunction of the liver and all the digestive organs. Fungal infection is also involved.

The cure lies in the adoption of an optimal sugar-free diet rich in nutrients and free too of all processed foods. A programme containing specifically named nutritional products based on wild oregano, red sour grape, etc is suggested.

The intestines should be cleansed with wild herbs and spices and other natural products and supplements. Oregulin, cumin, cinnamon, chromium, essential fatty acids and B-vitamins are among the nutrients/supplements mentioned. Basically, no fruit is permitted in the diet, as fruit largely consists of sugar.

I especially appreciated the chapters mentioning common vegetables and herbs of essential importance for diabetics, and gained much information new to me.

Protocols are prescribed for those suffering from diabetes in varying degrees of severity. These protocols, when followed, "reverse diabetic pathology and normalize blood sugar".

This is an invaluable, life-saving book for all those suffering from both types of the disease, and as I stated previously it is the absolute best I have come across.

I probably have purchased over 20 books on diabetes looking for "a cure" while thinking I could continue my current way of eating. I met Dr Cass about 20 years ago and when I heard of his new diabetes book I couldn't get to the book store fast enough to buy it. You will read what you don't want to hear, if you have diabetes you will have to give up sugar to get well. This is not what you will hear from your western medicine doctor, they will tell you that yes you can have sugar in moderation, NOT TRUE! Diabetes is a sugar handling problem that has occured in the body and you can't keep slamming it with continued eating of pies, cakes, candy and soda pop! Dr Cass gives a very detailed account of how sugar effects the body and what a poison it really is. He also goes in to detail how the adrenal glands and liver have a huge role in managing blood sugar which is nothing something you normally read in books about this disease. He gives very detailed and clear and easy to follow instructions on what to eat and what natural food supplements will help you heal. Dr Cass is way ahead of his time and I hope you buy the book and get well!

I had to force myself to finish reading this book. It is beyond a doubt the most poorly written and frustrating "reads" I've come across in a long time. Bad punctuation, and the repeated use of "the fact is", "in fact", "that is", and "thus" was as distracting as listening to Paris Hilton or some valley girl with the constant "like" and " uhm", etc. You're so busy noticing these idiosyncracies, the content is hard to follow. Plus, it seemed geared only toward his cure, not a variety of natural option, of which there are many.I felt that from page one the tone was almost angry. If you're presenting facts, (not that I'm doubting his) the facts should make their own argument. When presented in the tone I interpreted it seemed defensive, rather then informed. Ever had a friend vent at you over some problem? That's what reading this book felt like. By the time I finished it (in one sitting) I felt like someone had chewed my ear off. While content was interesting (when not distracted by everything else) I honestly wish I hadn't wasted my money on this particular book.

Homegrown Remedies

Homegrown RemediesWhile I did not purchase this book from Amazon, I highly recommend this to anyone interested in getting started with natural healing. Most of the herbs are ones that you probably already grow yourself, or easy to start. The introduction, "How To Use Herbs For Healing" is very informative, and easy to read and understand as is the whole book. She also takes the time to list the nutrients and minerals in each herb. She shows you how to grow your own, as well as easy recipes for making your own remedies. The remedies cover injury relief, allergy relief, digestive problems, and even foot baths, to name a few. This book will never leave my collection and that is saying a lot. You cannot go wrong for getting started with this book. Even experts would find the recipes valuable. At the end of the book are full colored photos of the different herbs.
