Almost Fat Free Down-Home Cooking

Almost Fat Free Down-Home CookingOne of the best cookbooks on the market. Each recipe give a breakdown of calories per serving along with the percentage of fats, carbs, fiber, etc. Outstanding!

I purchased this book because I LOVE to cook and am always looking for lowfat ways to prepare the foods I ate growing up that had WAY too much fat for me now. I have been VERY disappointed with it. In the past 3 weeks, I have tried 6 recipes so far. It was not ANYTHING like I had hoped for, and I even threw a few away because they tasted awful! I will keep trying a few more but so far am very dissatisfied with this book!

Plaited Glory: For Colored Girls Who've Considered Braids, Locks, and Twists

Plaited Glory: For Colored Girls Who've Considered Braids, Locks, and Twists"Plaited Glory" should have been written a long time ago. I am a young woman from Jamaica who, despite peer pressure and social pressure, has always kept my hair natural. I was so happy to find this book as I was growing my hair once again. I found Ms. Bonner's advice on hair care products and general care of black NATURAL hair very practical and useful. I am now locking my hair and read the hairlocking chapter of Ms. Bonner's book everyday. It is my "hair bible." I go to it whenever I have doubts about how I should treat my hair and what I should be doing to improve its health. I have recommended this book to many black women with natural hairstyles. Thank you for filling this obvious gap. It should not be so hard to find out how to care for NATURAl black hair, but your book is the best resource I've found to date. Most other books or articles give only an account of the history behind natural hairstyles. (Ms. Bonner, too, includes colourful and humorous stories in her book that illustrate society's view of natural hairstyles.) They don't provide information on how to groom and manage those styles. There should be many more books like this available to black women.

This book was the most down home honest book I ever read about black hair. Ms Bonner has an excellent sense of humor which made the book thoroughly enjoyable. I found myself in this book as Ms. Bonner recounted her trials and tribulations with her hair. Not only was this haircare book upbeat and funny but it also included tons of advice on the proper haircare. It also included numerous examples of natural hairstyles. I found this book impossible put down. In fact its in my hands now as I am typing this!

I learnt how to wash my hair, clean my roommates scalp, without disturbing her loc/coils/twist. The home remedies in this book really work I tried one the day after I read the book..... Lonnice has charm, wit and intelligence which comes bursting through the pages of this little book. While I am definitely in favor of chemical free hair (that means no chemical texturizing either) you can still use a lot of the info in this book. I have found that texturizing can be done naturally by cornrowing or twisting your hair. See Pamela Ferrell's book about this subject matter. I think you should include this book in your library as a reference guide because it does have some goods tips, especially about conditioning your hair. Some of the products can't be found anymore but hey there are others that can be substituted and as long as you understand the concept Lonnice is trying to convey who cares what the product is called, just do it.

I had become more and more interested in growing out my relaxer and wearing my hair natural. After finding enough information on the internet, and finally decided to do the big chop. I bough Lonnice Bonner's book so get some more tips on how to style and care for my hair. It's a really great, and very funny book which talks about Lonnice's personal hair experience. It gives great advice on how to care for natural hair, and shows some pictures and styles. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5, is because I was lookiing more for some intructions on how to actually do styles. But I would definitely recommend this book. It's an easy read.

Making Natural Milk Soap: Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletin A-199 (Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin, a-

Making Natural Milk Soap: Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletin A-199I have used this recipe four times. The first time I used the recipe was my first experience making soap. We were thrilled with the results. The mixture is easy to pour, making a nice, neat slab of soap to cut 24 hours later. The bars cured and became nice, hard bars of soap. The soap bars last a long time, too. One batch of this soap lasts me 10 months! I use these bars as shampoo bars, too, and it leaves my hair clean and soft. I have tried other soap recipes too, and some of them are very nice, but this recipe is my favorite. I cannot find it lacking in any respect, and have had no trouble with it whatsoever.

This is a great beginner recipe, believe me. Yes, the author cautions the reader to take the necessary precautions, and that is scary, but you will be safe if you are careful. Don't be afraid; be cautious.

Just remember your chemistry classes. Making soap is chemistry. Cooking is chemistry. Baking bread is chemistry. You have done some of these things already. Now try making soap. It is just one more chemistry experiment. If I can do it, so can you!

This is a gem of a little book. Yes, you can find some of the information online, but I prefer a simple, easy to follow manual which this is. The book does an excellent job of explaining the various milks available and how the best milk has high butterfat and thus high protein, and minerals.

I like that the author explains how using cream or half and half will result in a bar of soap that is more of a moisturizing bar. I equate this with Dove or Caress soap bars.On pages 22-23 the author does an excellent job of explaining how to add herbs, exfoliants, moisturizers, and healing ingredients like Aloe vera and honey to your homemade soaps.

She not only carefully explains how to make soap, much like our Grandmothers did, but how to make specialty bars with essential oils.

If you are like me, and have access to more than enough cows or goat milk and you dont want any to go to waste I highly recommend this book.

Revolutionary Medicine, 2nd (Illustrated Living History Series)

Revolutionary Medicine, 2ndRead this one on a full stomach. This stuff is real. This is how medicine was back during the days of our founding fathers. Truly you must admire the men who went to war to make our nation beginning, for this is what they got if they did not die in battle but were wounded.

More shocking is if you choose to read the book by this same author of the medicine of the Civil war period, you will see how little actually changed between the two wars.

great sketches of instruments, define many of the treatments and period beliefs. gives period names of common ailments and also explains how different sicknesses were confused, such as fevers or disentary.

I definitely would have rated this little book a lot higher if it weren't for the absolutely horrible print. It made me just about see double (my eyes aren't the best, but even so . . .) The drawings are great and the few descriptions I read interesting, informative, and, at times, humorous. The other books in this "history and Americana" series look interesting too, but I'll be darned if I'm going to spend money on something that is so frustrating to read.

Chic & Slim Encore: More About How French Women Dress Chic Stay Slim-And How You Can Too

Chic & Slim Encore: More About How French Women Dress Chic Stay Slim-And How You Can TooA few years ago, while vacationing in the Bahama's I observed a table of two French women eating lunch. They were both very slim, tres chic, and obviously not counting calories. Each woman had a full glass of red wine, some rich looking cheeses, a few crackers and a small assortment of other goodies. I couldn't help but wonder HOW they managed to remain so slim eating THAT. I was righteously nibbling on 1/2 bagel with a tad of fat (cream cheese) and some turkey protein thrown in. Yet I had at least ten pounds (ok 20)to lose. As a child I had lived in France and can still remember the delicious croissants, mouth watering chocolates, hearty breads, and rich cheeses the French ate so frequently. How did the women stay so slim? I had also noticed that the majority of them managed to look like a million dollars though I knew many of them were on tiny budgets. How did they do it? Then I came across Anne Barone's book at Amazon! Mais Oui! What a pleasure! I savored every morsel of Anne's delicious book, "Chic & Slim Encore". In the book Anne truly reveals how so many French women come across as attractive, chic, slim, in control, and poised regardless of the physical features nature gave them. She explains how you can eat rich, fatty, (forbidden) foods and remain tiny and terrific! What to look for in clothing so you always dress rich regardless of your pocketbook. How our feminity can be enhanced and appreciated if we so desire. The book embraces many aspects of the French culture and teaches aspects of the French lifestyle that we can use to enhance our lives. You learn how to simplify your life by aiming for quality not quantity. Moderation not accumulation. Buying the best you can afford in small amounts and forgetting the rest. Simple steps you can integrate into an active lifestyle to increase delight in the everyday! The book is a wonderful resource for enjoying and living the good life! Merci Anne!

This book focuses on the French Paradox. The French eat all this amazing food that's high in fat, rich, indulgent, yet they remain a much thinner culture than those of us in the US, who eat low-fat everything. Barone attributes this to many factors, primarily feelings of love and passion for food, rather than feelings of guilt. Part of French culture is taking time and care to go to the market, select the best ingredients, and to prepare food lovingly, rather than grabbing a low-fat (and probably unsatisfying) micro-meal of bowl of cereal. They French savor their food and take time with it. As a result, they are satisfied with smaller portions. They make sure to include courses such as soup, fruit, and cheese as part of their meal. These are filling, nutritious foods which keep entree sizes down. Another point Barone makes (which I really appreciate) is the focus on REAL food, instead of the foods we have here in the US now, whose ingredient listings take up half the box. Since reading this book, I have used my bread machine to make some French bread, which is cheaper and much better than sliced bread from the store. I had already given up on presliced bread, but I was buying it at the grocery. Now, I've gotten one step closer to real food! Barone also suggests shopping more often for only a few days at a time. This means food is as fresh as possible. This seems time-consuming, but it isn't. It's really great! I bought some whole milk yogurt and have been having it after dinner the last few nights with fresh blackberries. I add no sugar, and I relish every bite. It's heaven! The only complaint I have about this book is the section on men and relationships. I can't help but find the French "pout" childish and manipulative. I wasn't interested in that sort of advice when I bought this book, and I think it detracts from the book's overall message. In some arenas, French women are good role models. In the arena of relationships, I prefer my own experience to be my guide. Changing this aspect of one's own culturally-ingrained habits is nearly impossible and, in my mind, not desirable. The points Barone makes about relationships seem like stereotypes more than truth. Other than that, this is a great resource conveying an attitude about food that I hope American women can begin to embrace.

For those of you who loved CHIC & SLIM, take notice of the wonderful follow-up volume! Filled with advice concerning health, relationships, fashion, and self-esteem, ENCORE is a must-have for any woman's library.

Having lived in France and experienced the beauty of the French lifestyle, Ms. Barone is a proponent of moderation -something sadly lacking in our American society. We are a culture of "overconsumers," as is apparent not only in the way we eat, but also in the way we often misuse our finances and conduct our relationships. We also go overboard trying to be "perfect" -but generally use the media standard as our own, which has inherent problems. Ms. Barone recognizes this, and offers a refreshing solution: a sense of healthy self. It is not a matter of becoming a vegetarian or a protein powerhouse; it is not a matter of buying size four jeans in the hopes of starving your way into them; it is not a matter of applying a mask of cosmetics to make others think you were born with a certain "look"; nor is it a matter of building a draining career only to procure wealth. Instead, it is about appreciating the beauty with which one is born, as well as savoring the beauty of one's surroundings. It is about establishing one's femininity and being so confident as to not need to become involved in a relationship to avoid being alone. It is about using money wisely, and controlling finances rather than having debt control you. In essence, it is about finding and expressing true joy enjoying solitude, savoring art, making one's home a haven, taking pride in goals achieved, understanding the elegance of simplicity, and cherishing each age (one needn't be young to be a spectacular woman!).

Filled with sensible and savvy advice, delectable recipes, and an abundance of encouragement, CHIC & SLIM ENCORE is a wonderful gift to give to a mother, daughter, sister, friend -or yourself! Its lessons will be treasured by any woman. Sit back, sip your coffee drink of choice, and indulge yourself in one of the best ways possible -enjoy ENCORE and take it to heart!

It does not matter to me if Anne Barone is not a doctor, dietician or scientist--her diet and life mentality works for her and seems to be working for thousands of French women. There is no famous study backing up her opinions just the old common sense adage--if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc., than it must be a duck. In the same way, if eating cheese, butter, eggs, and bread does not put weight on the French, then it can certainly do the same for you. Anne Barone, in a fun breezy style, explains how to take the French lifestyle of shopping for just enough food, buying fresh and real products, eating slower over a longer period of time by taking smaller bites and using the continental manner of using a fork and knife, so that you too can be fitting into those wonderfull slim black skirts and form-revealing white blouses accented with a pretty scarf or antique pin. Sounds to good to be true? The key as with all things is moderation and good judgement. Anne explains how to think about your eating habits in ways that will help you to maintain good health while eating sumptious meals. In this, her second book, she actually gives portion sizes and sample recipes as well as additional information comparing American ways with those of the French regarding the six major lifestyle departments of culture, being a woman, personal style, cuisine, shopping and home decor, and love--ooh la la!

I find myself referring to this book just before I go to bed and have had time to mull over the events of the ending day--I try to tally up what I did to enjoy my life better, if I ate slower, took smaller bites, decided against that extra bite of pie-and I find that this time to myself helps me to encourage myself because I know I am on the correct road to health and well-being. How can I not be? Eating real food--not boxed convenience meals? Taking enough time to know when I am full and then stop just beforehand. Yes, it can be done and Anne encourages you along the way with her stories, examples and anecdotes. I recommend this book to all women who want to feel like women and look like those women who turn men's heads! Brava Anne---I look forward to your next book and hope you do a seminar in my neck of the woods soon.

When There Is No Doctor: Preventive and Emergency Healthcare in Challenging Times (Process Self-reli

When There Is No Doctor: Preventive and Emergency Healthcare in Challenging TimesI have read a couple titles from the Process Self-reliance Series, and they were impressive. However, after reading this one cover-to-cover ... it was a disappointment. I wouldn't go as far to say it wasn't helpful ... just not as much as a I expected. After I read this book, I purchased "Medicine for the Outdoors: The Essential Guide to Emergency Medical Procedures and First Aid" by Paul Auerbach ... and that book was REALLY GOOD. It contained a lot more of what I was expecting from this book (i.e. practical instructions for advanced medical aid). What was helpful from this book was comprehensive info on preventive measures for disaster scenarios, and a pretty comprehensive list for medical supplies to have in a well-stocked first aid kit (based on the author's years of experience in the ER).

I very recently picked up this book for it looked really interesting. Unlike most other books that I have reviewed of a certain genre, I should in all fairness first say that I do not own any other book of this variety, so consequently I have no experience with any other books of its type to compare it to. All I can do it offer a clear an objective opinion on the book as it stands alone.

Personally I have found this book to be extremely informative and interesting. It should be understood that this is not a book that speaks all that much about cuts and bruises, but real life emergency situations where lives could very easily be at stake. Its title is very much right on in that it prepares and instructs one as clear and easily as possible as to what to do, and how to handle a series of very traumatic medical emergencies. In other words, it is designed more for when their really isn't a doctor to either be found, or when there will be a long time between the emergency situation, and actually getting hold of a medical professional. It is very helpful in informing one as to what should be in your home or whatever place you will be keeping this book as to what supplies, equipment, and medicines should be kept on hand just in case. And it does clearly and as plainly as possible explain the procedure for dozens of truly emergency situations and trauma. On the other hand, it is not a book that will either describe or recommend that you attempt to pull out your own tonsils to save some time and cash. As the author, Dr, Gerard Doyle himself states on the book jacket:

"I will not teach you to be a lone survivalist who anticipates doing an appendectomy on himself or a loved one on the kitchen table with a steak knife and a few spoons, although I will discuss techniques of austere and improvised medicine for really hard times."

My experience with this book so far has been fortunately not to have any real need of it. But I am attempting to educate myself as to the advice, preparedness, and actual procedure should such an emergency situation arise when there really is no doctor around, and its only you, or some other non professional to be depended on. It is very interesting to read, very informative in a plain easy to understand language, and could very well save your own, or someone else's life someday. I have taken one star off the total rating for unfortunately Dr. Doyle cannot help himself but regurgitate a lot of both very well known and common sense advice about eating right and exercising. And the book does contain a healthy dose of filler here and there as to the background and anatomy of an appendix for example, along with the actual description of an emergency involving one should one arise. But certainly not does his lecturing or anatomical filler come at the expense of great deal of truly helpful and potentially life saving instruction and procedure. Personally I like the book very much and consider it well worth the price, and something that every home should have around. Recommended...

When there is no doctor is a very good overview of austere and disaster medicine preparation, it is not however a how to manual. Nor is it one you would read after grid crash. It is a book that the intent is to point you in the right directions do learn and read more and to get supplies together. Of unusual content is the fact that the book touches on veterinary medicine post grid crash. I would highly recommend that everyone read this book.

First off, the title of this book is misleading it is obviously meant to trick people into purchasing this book when they search for the REAL book titled "Where There Is No Doctor". Add a small typeface and people who are in a rush, and BAM you've bought yourself a useless kindle book.

Secondly, the entire book reads like a preface. It's the first chapter before the REAL book starts. But that REAL book never materializes. It goes over WHY you should learn basic medical skills. Over and over and over. Beating a dead horse. Without. Ever. Teaching. You. Anything.

Anyone purchasing this book is already familiar with all the situations that may lead to SHTF. I can't imagine how this book would help anyone actually going through that type of situation. Except perhaps to start a fire or sop up blood.

At best, it could be considered a reference book when seeking places to actually GET information. It lists the Red Cross and St John Ambulance. Online courses. Courses at your local college. Other books. Seriously?

Sigh. I seriously can't believe I wasted my money on this. If I thought there might be a way to get a refund from this Kindle purchase, I definitely would. It has a misleading title, and is one evening's read chocked full of NOTHING.

This is a good book, but it may not be the one you're looking for. This title is confusingly similar to that of a different and truly great book: Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook

The latter is primarily a treatment of public health management in the Third World, whereas Dr. Doyle's book is more about self-reliant medical care. There's significant overlap, but one book is not a substitute for the other, and I wish Dr. Doyle had chosen a more clearly unique title.

Caregiving Tips A-Z: Alzheimer's & Other Dementias

Caregiving Tips A-Z: Alzheimer's & Other DementiasStarr has outdone herself with this book! All of the tips are "real life" answers to everyday problems in dealing with the elderly, and people of all ages. Her tips and sugestions don't require additional money or effort, they incorporate everyday scenarios with everyday ideas. Loved it!

This book is indeed "a practical guide" for getting through each day-in a way that only caregivers can understand. The information in it has made my days better than they would have been otherwise. The chapters on communication and behavioral changes have helped in developing caregiver skills; and there are other helpful chapters on improving the home set-up and managing problems with family members. I was especially impressed with the detailed information put into this book on everything from adult role changes to getting the keys back from your parent. It worked for me!
