The Resistance Band Workout Book

The Resistance Band Workout BookI didn't buy this through Amazon. But I thought it was a great book. Many more uses for the band than most books. It discusses stretching, rest periods for the muscles, etc. It is divided into groups of exercises for each of the major muscle groups. Off-hand, I can recall it has exercises for arms, shoulders, chest, trunk and abs, legs, hips, thighs and buttocks. That's great for targetting. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the workouts in the back don't refer to the page the exercise is on so I constantly have to go back to look for them and then do them. I still haven't found one of them yet, lol. But all in all, it did have more excersises for the bands for each muscle group than any of the other books I have so far.

I would've given this 3 1/2 stars although that is not an option (so i rounded up). First let me state that I think this is a great book. The writers provide excellent information and pictures so that a user can do the exercises with ease. They also provide good information to help the user to try to create a program that will help them fulfill their needs.

There were a couple of things that I think the author could've improved upon. First, as another reviewer mentioned, they do not tell you the page numbers of the exercises in the end of the book (program section). When creating your program, it takes 3x as long to look up each individual exercise. Second, I did not like that they did not include what muscle (s) or groups were being worked out in each exercise. Granted the writers put the exercises under vague headings like Chest, arm, legs, etc. but they do not tell you specifics like biceps, traps, rear delts... like every other exercise book does. Lastly, I think the writers should have had several sample exercise plans that each cater to one's specific goals.

If they revise this book and incorporate some of these suggestions, then this book would definitely be 5 stars.

It's a cool book. I has a great description and it's easy to follow. I especially like how they broke down the planes (i.e. horizontal, sagital, and frontal) altough this may not seem important to novice exercisers. It definately gives you exercises for the total body.

2013 Writer's Market

2013 Writer's MarketThe 2013 version of the Writer's Market is one of the worst ever published. From format to content, this version is a disappointment. Let's start with the type. The new version uses two-column pages, needing an extremely small font to fit all the text. The titles of the publishers and magazines are in light gray type, making it difficult to see where one market ends and another begins. The organization of the content is ridiculous. A writer consults this book for specific information, which should be easily accessible. Instead, for some reason, the publishers decided that the more information they could fit in a column, the better. One has to read through lines and lines of "filler" to get at the important info. Some of the markets have an entire column of description--which could easily have been reduced without any loss of significant information.

Why can't the publishers of this book ever get it right? Would it be so difficult to have a uniform format for each entry with only the basic information writers need? Of course, any individual market would love to have as much publicity as can fit on a page, and WM obliges with column-long blurbs. But this book is essentially a reference book, and who wants to read through miles of tiny print to find essential information? Drop the two-column format, shorten the entries with a word limit, make the content for each market more uniform, and darken the type for market names. And it wouldn't hurt to ask for feedback from writers who actually need to use this book. Conduct a survey or focus group. Just do something.

I bought the Kindle edition of this book, and appreciate the insight it gives me into different markets. However, I found that the coverage of some markets is very thin. For example, the Consumer Magazines/Photography section of the book lists only two photography magazines, and only one of the publications listed is considered mainstream. There are dozens of photography magazines that are not listed including such mainstays as Popular Photography, American Photo, and Shutterbug to name just three.

So I recommend starting with this book. Then go to a local newsstand to see what other magazines are being published that in your target market.

I've used previous versions of this book for years, and have found the book to be extremely helpful. I expect that the new version will be equally helpful.

One of the most popular sections of the Writer's Market for independent writers is "How Much Should I Charge?" But the 2013 edition has an error under the following section:

Advertising & Public Relations Press kits

Under the "Other" portion of the table," the prices are, respectively:

High $850/60sec

Low $120/60sec

Avg $456/60sec

It looks like the information was picked up from the costs several lines down for Radio commercials!

Everyone who purchased this book should get a revised section from the publishers! And I'm contacting Amazon.com to arrange for a return.

PS/One of the problems when data is missing, or incorrect, you wonder what else might be missing or in error. Upon returning the 2013 edition, I reordered an older edition from Amazon which is complete.

I preferred the format of the Writer's Market a few years ago, it was easier to read and easier to find what you needed. There were less markets listed in this edition and the format was more difficult to read, things seemed "jammed" together.

It used to be a better, more helpful book...but as a free lance writer, I still have to buy it since it's still the best source for information...wish it was as good as it used to be.

The 2013 Writer's Market is well organized. The key to icons and abbreviations located inside the front cover makes it easy to quickly decide which listings that interest me. There are examples on writing query and cover letters. There are many pages devoted to promoting your work. There is a section that explains how copyrights work. There is a section on blogging basics that is easy to understand. The 2013 WM has sections devoted to Book Publishers, Literary Agents, Consumer Magazines, Trade Journals; also contests and Awards. The listings are catagorized according to topic. The page edges for each section are highlited, making it easy to flip and find the section you are seeking. And, the price is reasonable.

The Handholder's Handbook: A Guide for Caregivers of People with Alzheimer's or Other Dementias

The Handholder's Handbook: A Guide for Caregivers of People with Alzheimer's or Other DementiasRosette Teitel is a gifted author. Her book is informative, helpful and full of PRACTICAL coping mechanisms, suggestions and resources. It is clearly written and is a guide on a difficult journey. My family and I found it to be invaluable . Mrs. Teitel addressed specific issues from many angles... all in one book!!

THE HANDHOLDER'S HANDBOOK is a God-send... a MUST READ for caregivers of anyone with dementia/Alzheimer's. If you buy nothing else, BUY AND READ THE HANDHOLDER'S HANDBOOK!!

I wish I'd read this book (and given it to my stepmother) sooner. She'd been dealing with my father's dementia for several years on her own before I found this book (just weeks before he died). It is written by someone who's not only been there, but who has a wonderful ability to offer practical advice and emotional support simultaneously via an engaging writing style. Just reading this book can make the caregiver feel that she is not alone and can inspire behavioral change that benefits caregiver and care receiver alike. I highly recommend it.

I can not say enough good things about this book! The author has given so much advice, both practical and emotional.

You can tell this woman was a teacher as the chapters are clearly organized with a synopsis at the end of each and other sources of info. The index is excellent (and very useful).

Best of all, she writes from the heart...she's been there and knows what the journey is like.

This book had many excellent resources. However, I am the child of the person I am caring for, and almost none of what was here was applicable to my situation. This book is geared towards a spouse as caregiver. It is a great resource for a person caring for their spousebut almsot useless for a child caring for a parent. (I want to clarifythe book itself is well written, etc. just very specific in its application).

Lean, Long & Strong: The 6-Week Strength-Training, Fat-Burning Program for Women

Lean, Long & Strong: The 6-Week Strength-Training, Fat-Burning Program for WomenThis book is wonderful! Finally a book that tells you realistically that you can succeed at working out and getting the body you want. Wini's focus is not on spending hours in the gym, but on setting up a systematic approach to your workout to get in and get it done, by doing it right! I was sick and tired of going to the gym and wasting time not knowing what exercises to do. Following the Synergy sets in Wini's book helps you to complete a balanced workout in a short amount of time. The pictures are wonderful and her explanations of the exercise help you to really focus on the target area. She has multiple exercise for your core, legs, arm, and stretching exercise for your whole body. The best part is that you can do the workouts at the gym or at home and only need simple equipment. The main difference that I have noticed is that I am actually looking forward to working out because I know exactly what I am going to be doing and I am getting a good workout and making the MOST out of my time.

I think this book is wonderfully well written and well thought out. I do have one suggestion which is to take the book to your local Kinkos and have the binding cut off and three hole punched. This allows for moving the six week programs around to suit your needs at the time. I did this for $1.50 which added greatly to the user friendly aspect of the book.

When you first see the cover of this book, you may feel intimidated by Wini's buff body but as soon as you open the book, Wini's warmth and positive tone give you the impression that you too can be fit and strong! I picked up this book about 11 weeks ago and have been working with it ever since. The changes in my body are amazing especially in my arms and legs. I finally have some biceps and my butt is very firm. My midsection, which is my weakest spot, has been gradually reducing and I am now at the point where I can easily wear a bikini and not look like a fool.

I am a big fan of workout books, but usually my interest wanes after about 6 weeks. This year, I have been determined to really trim off that last bit of flab and build some muscle this book is a great starting point. The information is sound, the pictures are great and the descriptions really help you to perfect your form.

I would recommend this to anyone who would like to get in shape it really is a pretty darn good book.

I love this book so much that it's falling apart! The workout makes me feel strong, connected to my body and serene. I've never successfully followed an exercise program from a book for any lenth of time before. I got it about 6 months ago and have been pretty faithfully using it since. The combination of weights, yoga and stretching provides a lot of variety and it seems a very balanced workout, aside from the cardio. I do Wini's workout 4-5 times a week, and usually add 30-40 minutes of fast walking on a treadmill 3-4 times a week, sometimes not even on the same day. I've followed her advice to do the workout with intensity, and it's really worked for me. I use a roll-up mat, a few free weights, a CD of relaxing music for focus, and that's it. No getting dressed up and going to the gym, no giant machines. It's not for hard-core fitness folks, but there's enough here to challenge most of us.

I loved BOdy Change but found the workouts weren't always convenient for the amount of time they took. I loved Body For Life because it gave me an alternating schedule for workouts but 6 days a week was just too hard to maintain.

Wini has taken the best of her last book and made it do-able for the average woman. I'm a working mom and now have focus in the gym on my 4 days/week schedule. Not only that, it's so effective and a great powerful use of my limited time.

The stretches are an added benefit and as I'm learning from my mom, an essential thing for women to practice to aid in aging without pain. These workouts are completely balanced and the stretches just reinforce the time we need to focus on ourselves.

I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see the long term results. Thank you, Wini!
