The Mold Survival Guide: For Your Home and for Your Health

The Mold Survival Guide: For Your Home and for Your HealthThis book written by long time professional home inspector Jeff May and his writer spouse Connie is a good introduction to mold problems in buildings, particularly homes. It combines an excellent narrative writing style, and unusual for a book that should appeal to many lay readers, a strong scientific understanding of mold, its growth requirements, its effects on human health, its detection in indoor spaces and ultimately its control. Jeff who I have known for over 20 years brings to this book many years (and of course many investigated buildings) of real-world experience with the scientific understanding to match. That is a rare combination. The book is a good read for the lay individual concerned about mold, the parent with a child with asthma, chronic sinusitis, or chronic non-seasonal allergy. It is also a good read for mold professionals of limited experience and those planning to enter the profession.

Despite the name "survival guide" I found this a calm and informative guide to environmental mold issues. It explained in an understandable way the scientific issues around mold such as what mold is, how it can be a health hazard, and more importantly how mold is not some sort of invisible killer, but something that requires certain conditions to become a problem.

I am a Certified Microbial Consultant (mold inspector) and a board member of the American Indoor Air Quality Council. I have this book in my library as a reference. It's quite comprehensive.

Jeffrey has done a god job. It's written for the lay person but also contains a lot of technical information (and technically correct information). The publisher is John Hopkins University. So it's a good read for the academics.

A good, comprehensive book for those who need to know about mold.

This book provides clear and practical information to help you protect your health and your property from being damaged or destroyed by mold.

Mold is not just stinky and ugly. It has adversely affected the health of many people, especially those who are allergic to mold. Mold spores irritate the respiratory system and weaken the immune system's ability to remove particles from the lungs and to kill cancer cells.

Mold has made some buildings uninhabitable and uninsurable. Mortgage lenders avoid loaning money for the purchase of any building with significant mold infestations. Some families have already lost their home, including all of their equity, due to mold.

Jeffrey and Connie May have succeeded in providing practical wisdom gained from actually solving serious problems in homes and other buildings. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to solve and/or avoid mold problems.

The Organized Parent : 365 Simple Solutions to Managing Your Home, Your Time, and Your Family's Life

The Organized Parent : 365 Simple Solutions to Managing Your Home, Your Time, and Your Family's LifeAs a lifelong packrat and very unorganized person, this book is the first book that has ever actually motivated me to really become organized and I've actually read it all the way through and followed it's tips. A great thing about this book is that you don't have to read all the way through. Pick a chapter and dive right in AND it gives you great solutions/options for quick fixes or major rehauls.

I'm newly married and only have one small baby, but I'm hoping that as a SAHM, this will get my butt in gear and keep it there for years to come.

As a busy mother of 8 children under the ages of 12--I'm always looking for new ideas to help keep us all on track. I definitely picked up some great "new" ideas from this book to add to my on-going collection of ways to be more organized and in control. She makes the read fun and quick! Very easy to follow when you are looking for specific topics. A great reference to come back to over and over again. As a writer myself, I appreciated her sense of humor and style!!

I was rather disappointed in this book. The tips are mostly quite basic (although a handy reference if you don't have a similar book) store things where you use them, make the kids help clean up. I didn't feel that it lived up to its title of 'the organized *parent*' but was more of a general organizing book.

I was excited to read this book and learn some new tips for staying organized and managing my time with 2 kids under age 2, but this book was not the answer for me. I had seen 95% of the tips before, either in magazines or on organization shows, and I found many of the tips to be outdated (catalog shopping, dropping off film at the drugstore). This book felt like it was written a decade or so ago, then was revised to add some websites.

The author lives in an older house and has school-age children, and at times she seems to be writing only to the audience who has the same circumstances. Some of the tips (such as hanging a rope from your child's ceiling for storage) are dangerous, and others (building walls and knocking out niches) would require a hefty budget and/or great carpentry skills.

Finally, although it doesn't take an organization professional to write about organization, an amateur should NOT be giving financial advice. The author is obviously not a certified financial planner, yet makes suggestions on how the reader can get out of debt (cutting up credit cards, using an envelope system) and plan budgets. Please, if you are looking to tune your finances, consult a professional or at least read a book authored by an expert!

Overall, I was disappointed with the content and was looking for more specific strategies geared towards a "parent".

Yoga For Americans: A Complete Six Weeks' Course For Home Practice

Yoga For Americans: A Complete Six Weeks' Course For Home PracticeMy first introduction to yoga was with Indra Devi's book, Yoga for americans. She has truly hit on the relevance of yoga within anyone's life and this book is a nutritional, physiological and spiritual guide to wellbeing that is as informational and useful now as it was when she wrote it.
