Shot: Staying Alive with Diabetes

Shot: Staying Alive with DiabetesAs a general population we are becoming increasingly familiar with type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, however, remains something of a mystery, and it's often conceived as a "just" a chronic condition that means a patient might have to take insulin sometimes and watch what he or she eats -i.e., not that "big of a deal."

This book proves quite clearly what a misconception that is. Ms. Ryan's story illustrates just how serious Type 1 diabetes is, with potentially life-threatening, and often unpredictably-timed, consequences. But setting the medical info aside, to me, the greater benefit of the book is to show the extent to which the disease pervades a patient's daily life -how exhausting it would be, mentally and physically, to have to prick your finger and check your glucose level 10-15 times per day, and then to have to inject yourself with the right amount of insulin at each time; how day in and day out it never changes. Fifteen years after diagnosis, the patient is not only "shot" with medication, but mentally "shot" too. It was, for me at least, a real eye-opener about life with a chronic condition.

The book is not at all negative or depressing, though. By contrast, Ms. Ryan tells her story with good humor and even joy (at times!). She's not embarassed to share the good or the bad and puts a very human face on the disease. One of my favorite parts of the book is when she discusses her decision to convert to an insulin pump, and shares her very real (but something I wouldn't have thought of) concerns about how it could affect intimacy in her marriage! Her experiences with pregnancy were also eye-opening for someone whose only experience with a diabetic pregnancy is "Steel Magnolias" and a gestational diabetes glucose test.

I found the story compelling and a quick, but highly informative read. You should read the book just because it's funny and interesting -but it would be especially great for someone with T1D (even newly diagnosed), or family members of those with T1D or another chronic condition.

Amy Ryan's book is a must read for anyone who has diabetes, has a family member or friend with the disease or just wants to know about what it is like to live with it. She describes her experience in an engaging way and paints the daily picture of what millions of Americans are experiencing every day. If you read her story, you'll know that you are not alone. A terrific read that is well written and engaging.

Amy Ryan has written a book about the ongoing challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes. It is not a how-to book. It is not a list of resources. It is a story from the heart of a woman who has been given a life sentence with a chronic disease. Her fears, trials, missteps, setbacks and triumphs are laid out in a well told tale of truly frightening proportions. She was an adult when her diabetes was discovered, and it nearly destroyed her with its many turnings and complications. I can only imagine the horror such a diagnosis would hold for parents of a young child, the normal victims of this disease. She has bravely chronicled her years in a manner that is easily accessible even to those who have only a passing acquaintance with this killer.

Brava, Amy!

The book is titled "Shot" but it starts with a punch in the stomach.

The author finds out one day that she has to stick needles into

herself everyday for the rest of her life or she could die.

This is a fast paced account of being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes

and learning to live with the relentless demands of a chronic disease.

The book expertly balances nerve racking human drama with

information that should be invaluable to anybody suffering from

diabetes or any chronic disease for that matter. Written in

a narrative style, the book takes the reader along for a ride from

the first days of total fear and confusion to today's era of hope

found in emerging technologies and treatments. I enjoyed the book

very much.

I really enjoyed this book. Amy took each and every experience that an adult diagnosed with type I diabetes ha,s and got them down on paper in a way that tells a story that is good, true & interesting.

Reading the book encouraged me so much. I've struggled with t1d for 10 years now, and have been in the burnout phase at this point, for sure. While reading this, I remembered that there was a time when I had GREAT control over the illness, and that I know I can get there again. I endured 3 pregnancies with it, and she described the anxiety involved with that to a T!

There were some places she didn't go, that get pretty dark with this illness like the fact that many women diagnosed discover that not only is life a bit easier (in the present moment) when you run high, but you also can eat essentially whatever you want and get *thinner*. This is an aspect of t1d that I struggle with and occasionally feel hopeless to overcome. I hoped she might venture there, but perhaps she will write a sequel.

Alternative Cures: More than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home Remedies

Alternative Cures: More than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home RemediesI can't say enough about what a wonderful book this is. Updated and easier to read with a new font. It is one that we refer to with regularity at our home. I will buy extras to give as gifts to family I think that highly of it.

To me this book just did not do enough to make me feel confident that I could trust the information provided. It mostly recommends supplements, but I felt explanations were sometimes lacking. For fatigue it recommends glutamate. I googled this and found information on MSG. The book is telling me to take MSG supplements? I'm not really surebut having paid for the book, I don't expect to have to spend hours googling trying to figure out what you are telling me and if it's actually safe for me. Similarly it recommends carnitine which I had to google and read about various forms and try to figure out what I was supposed to be taking. If you recommend supplements at the very least couldn't the book tell me what to look for in supplementsparticularly what it would be called would be helpful. When I look for carnitine supplements I find L-Carnitine, Acetyl L-Carnitine. Which one is right? Looking more I find there is propionyl-L-carnitine, and D-carnitine which apparently is bad. None of this is the book. I don't feel the information is complete enough and due to that I don't feel I can trust it. I do not recommend wasting money on this book.

I am just finishing reading this book. I bought it because I was looking for answers to some health problems me and my husband have but also because I am interested in natural medicine. In this book the author goes around the US and talks to all kinds of alternative health professionals. What you get is a lot of very valuable information and advice. I only didn't give it 5 stars because I wanted to find here alternatives using the spices and herbs you can easily find everywhere, like cayenne pepper, cider vinegar and such. This book is more about supplements but very interesting nevertheless and very much worth reading. As they say on the cover it contains information about more than 1.000 of the most effective natural home remedies. Still, the problem is that many of the supplements discussed in this book are rather expensive, at least here in Europe so if you take a few for a longer period of time it does cost you a lot of money. But you get to understand health problems better and although you don't go and buy everything they talk about you can make an informed choice. At the end there is also a very interesting explanation about what many of the alternative therapies are all about, a guideline for the safe use of the remedies they purpose, where you can go to get the products they talk about (very useful because sometimes you read about something you would like to try but you have no idea where to find it) and a couple of pages which show you the acupressure points in case you want to try the therapies. Even if you don't suffer from anything it is always good to be informed so that you can avoid those ailments. And they do discuss a lot of ailments.... even wrinkles! Other ones which might interest a lot of people are heart and blood pressure problems, Cataracts, Allergies, Menopausal problems, warts, Diabetes... you name it, if you suffer from something the chance is that they discuss it in this book.

Another point of interest is the fact that they also point out to you when you should go to the doctor and what to look for when you find yourself a therapist. I liked the fact that they have a preference for natural cures, of course, but that they don't think that they will cure all. There are always problems which require a regular doctor. I will keep at hand as a reference book but now I will also look for one which uses simple home remedies!

I have read this book, found it at my local library (I am glad I haven't spent any money). When it comes to book on natural medicine I know I can trust books by Darling Kindersly, nice clear pictures etc. Oh, and lately I was given another book God's Medicine Is Best (herbs, vitamins and minerals) by Linda Wise, very simple and I like it.

The Complete Guide to Alzheimer's-Proofing Your Home (Revised Edition)

The Complete Guide to Alzheimer's-Proofing Your HomeMark Warner's book on Alzheimer's proofing your home is more than a how to book. Mr. Warner gives an in-depth description of the ways in which Alzheimer's disease affects a person's life, and the life of the extended family. By understanding the disease in depth and the changes that take place in a person physical and emotional need, there is a context to understanding why modifications and alterations are needed. He explains what to do and why to do it. His approach is that of a loving caregiver who not only wants to make the home safe and secure, but also wants to raise the quality of life. . Modifications are practical, but also designed to bring comfort. Even after over two decades of working professionally with people with memory loss, many of his suggestions caught me by surprise. I kept saying to myself, "why didn't I think of that?" He addresses all the behaviors associated with the disease, from wandering to agitation, and suggests environment solutions that could ease the situation. Not only will this bring a higher level of comfort to the person with the disease, but many of the suggestions are a benefit for anyone who wishes to have a safe and barrier free home. I recommend this book to anyone caring for someone with Alzheimer's, anyone involved in home care, and anyone who is interested in altering environments to meet specific needs of unique individuals. Like any thoughtful book, his ideas about adapting environments to the needs of people with Alzheimer's disease also stretches one's thinking about changing environments for anyone with specific needs, or who wants to think about the highest level of safety for family members.

This book is a must for caregivers and professionals facing the challenges of Alzheimer's. It is the first book I've read devoted to Alzheimer's care that offers something more than reasons to institutionalize our people. Caregivers need information, options and where to access tools and resources before they can make informed decisions about their choices or their role as caregiver. As someone who spent 25 years designing rehabilitations plans for handicapped people and another 10 years facing the care of my husband, Tom, who died of this disease in our home, this is the first volume I've picked up that speaks of caregiving in positive, life-giving, do-able terms and not the drudgery that we are all led to believe consumes the process. While it offers pragmatic, workable, affordable solutions to caregivers, it never loses sight of the continued humanity and needs of our family members for love and regard in spite of their loss of cognitive skills. My experience as a caregiver was met with nothing but obsticles in my quest to keep my husband home, a journey I relate in my book, "He Used to be Somebody." I found Tom's care problems were 75% attitude and 25% tools, resources and help. This book offers both to families. I highly recommend it.

What an impressive book you get 400+ pages of ways to make life more comfortable for someone with Alzheimers. These also help the caregiver in a variety of situations.

The advice covers things like how to deal with wandering and gives four types of this behavior. It tells how to eliminate places to hide and rummage, coping with fears (of bathing, of strangers, of abandonment), and managing incontinence.

The book helps with mobility issues, addresses safety and how to manage daily living. It includes a valuable section (38 pages) lists where to find special products from stair lifts to bathing aids to ramps to bedwetting alarms.

I'm so glad to see a book this comprehensive to assist with Alzheimer's needs.

This is a wonderful resource book it has several of my favorite things a good resource book has to have. Great problem solving ideas for at home alzheimer's care, you never thought of before but wonder why you didn't. A fantastic table of contents, where under each chaper is listed all the ideas contained. And an extensive index in the back, so you have a second way of finding the particular problem you are trying to solve. In the book there are sidebars on each page that show the names of companies that sell the products they mention on that page (there's a list in back of book showing address and phone number of each company). Also suggested conversations for diversion/redirection are in sidebars. I really glad to have this book as a resource for me to help my clients. It's jammed full of ideas.
