Voices of Caregiving: The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength (Voices Of se

Voices of Caregiving: The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength"You are not done and you are not broken. You can and will find a new direction." Strange Silence by Nicole Drumheller Gargus.

This simple yet powerful sentiment both stern and compassionate is exactly what this compilation volume `Voices of Caregiving' is saying throughout its collection of stories. Each one of these tales has an inspirational message for its readers. Although The Healing Project, which is the organization which edited and published the book, may have primarily intended these stories for those who are overcoming the physical and mental suffering which accompany injury and illness, it is by no means off limits to anyone who needs an uplifting story of courage and kindness. Interspersed between the narratives is a factual essay explaining hospice and its role in the United States. The volume strikes a slightly academic balance between its factual articles and its realistic tales. Each writer who has been included in this compilation is writing from a place of utter sincerity and sometimes pain depending on the topic.

One story in particular which stands out is `The Reward' by Rosemary Banks. This brief narrative focuses on the frustration of a mother who is once again going through the endless routine of preparing her 8 year old autistic son, Diop, for school. The reader is able to feel the tension that exists between the mother's love for her son and her anger at God and the world for allowing her son to live with his condition. "Desperation washes over me like a hot flash. I think how much easier my life would have been without this fat young boy with curly black hair and dimples. My life wasn't supposed to be like this." By the end of the story the reader is privy to another sentiment which belies the first. The narrator speaks of her autistic son with pride as she walks her him to the front of the auditorium to thunderous applause as he accepts his award. This beautiful story told in very few snapshots gives us a glimpse of what life is like taking care of an autistic child, both the challenges and the triumphs.

Another tale in particular reveals the power of a wife's commitment to her husband who has lost all hope due to an injury sustained during a training exercise in the military. In this tense and dramatic story, a woman wakes to the disturbing sound of a pistol being loaded by her husband. In his despair, he has decided to end his suffering so that she may be free to find another man who has not been broken. However, her faithfulness and love allow her to calmly talk him out of his depression long enough to reconsider this tragic path and put his trust in her words of compassion and her tender embrace. Through this understanding, the woman realizes how strong she has been all along in their marriage and they both must continue to rely on one another for support. It is truly inspirational to see those bonds of love reaffirmed as both husband and wife are again committed to live for one another and with one another.

Regardless of which story you choose to read first, this book will not disappoint and may motivate you to reach out to those you love or even strangers with kindness. For it is the overall goal of The Healing Project to develop resources to enhance the quality of life for those with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Simply by purchasing this book you are giving to their cause, yet by paying it forward you are furthering their cause.

For anyone who has cared for a loved one, these stories offer hope and support. A wonderful book of stories written by real people who have "been there, done that," and lived through it.

The Curvy Girl's Guide to Style

The Curvy Girl's Guide to StyleI purchased this book after missing the opportunity by one day to meet the author here in Phoenix at Strut Bridal Salon. I ordered this book initially because I liked the message and I am at a place where I am ready to embrace my plus sized self. Once receiving it, I was really disappointed in how short it was. Chastity really just starts to warm up and get going somewhere when the book ends. At under 100 pages of actual helpful text, (which is printed in a sizeable font to begin with), it felt really underdone. I'm going to assume this is because Ms. Garner is to be releasing a series of these books, which, frankly, I feel is a mistake. Why need to release 5 books at 14+ dollars each? All are variations on the same knowledge (dressing for different situations as a plus sized woman.) I would have been happy to spend 40 bucks on a larger text; something along the lines of The Plus Sized Woman's Guide to Style in any Circumstance or something. I would have liked a large reference for myself as a plus sized woman, instead of a series of tiny skinny books about how great it is to not be tiny or skinny. All in all a good idea but don't expect much more than basic knowledge (wear black, don't wear horizontal stripes and know your measurements) and a HUUUUUUGE bibliography section almost as long as the book itself. I would encourage the interested reader to get their copy from the library as you won't need much time to read it, and the knowledge therein is easily retained (as there isn't much to take in). I really feel that this text suffers from its lack of more pages, knowledge, or substance.

I took a risk in purchasing this book, but considering how clueless I am when it comes to dressing myself (having been a jeans and t-shirt girl for the past 3+ years) I was excited to get started.

Firstly, I finished the book without 2 hours. I really did enjoy the book. It made me a bit more confident to wear certain clothes that I wasn't sure would suit me. Chastity also talks a bit more in-depth about undergarments and the various things they can do, and so now I am significantly less intimidated of them. I found that very helpful.

Overall, there are good tips and advice in this book, not a lot of it new or previously unknown.I do still feel it fell just a bit short. I wished there were possibly more illustrations (to show the body types, and show what types of garments she was talking about...though she does describe them decently). It is one thing to say what would work, but once us gals get out there in the real world and try to shop, we really need extra visual aids to see exactly what we should go for. It can be hard enough for a curvy lady to get the guts to go shopping in the first place so that would be helpful. Also, I found myself wishing she talked more about how to find our personal styles, or how to accessorize. Now, Chastity does talk about accessorizing but it would have been helpful if she would show us some illustrated examples perhaps. I know not everyone is as clueless as I am, but alot of curvy women neglect their fashion choices for a long time and so need really all the help that they can get.

Overall I don't regret buying this book, I simply wish it was more comprehensive.

I borrowed this book from the KLL because Amazon thought I'd like it after I read a few Body Acceptance/Health at Every Size-type reads. Warning: the recommendations are NOT accurate. This book is about using shapewear and clothing styles to make a fat body look like a thin one, i.e. be "flattering," not necessarily about accepting your body in the way that it looks.

Pros: Succinctly written, recommends some good websites, takes into account different body types and variations/combinations thereof

Cons: Shallow in terms of self-acceptance -this author seems to promote using shapewear to squeeze yourself into clothes rather than accept your body and love it. Very mainstream (i.e. relatively boring) in its approach to clothing and fashion. Very, very short.

All in all, I prefer the fatshionistas on Tumblr and the like to this book. This book basically is about pinching and squeezing your body into shapewear so that it can look "sleek" in mainstream clothing. To me, it's the equivalent of veg*n food being imitation meat. That works for some people, but it's a lot healthier, cost-effective, and fun to think out of the box.

It's hard to get good advice for girls who aren't size 4. This seems to be sensible and actually useful ---which is not something you can often say about fashion.

A Day in the Budwig Diet: The Book: Learn Dr. Budwig's complete home healing protocol against cancer

A Day in the Budwig Diet: The Book: Learn Dr. Budwig's complete home healing protocol against cancer, arthritis, heart disease & more"A Day in the Budwig Diet" is ideal for anyone that wishes to implement the Budwig protocol for themselves, a family member, or a patient. Part I of the book breaks down the day-by-day rules of the protocol, so that it can be understood by those with a non-medical background, complete with diagrams and charts that can be pulled out of the book and used in the kitchen. Part II explains the research behind the protocol, which is important to understand, so that when using the diet one can have a solid, theoretical understanding of what their bodies are going through. While I am not currently implementing the diet for myself or someone else, and cannot testify as to the efficacy of the diet, I found the book to be very informative, well put together, and easy to understand. I would definitely pass it on to family/friends/patients in the future, and feel this information greatly expands my understanding of food therapy for cancer.

Learning the Budwig diet from Dr. Budwig's books can be a challenge, since her books (although recommended) are in most part transcripts of her lectures. So "A Day in the Budwig Diet: The Book", just like the DVD, will guide you through Dr. Budwig's complete healing protocol in an easy to understand manner. As you will see, it's not JUST the Budwig cottage-cheese muesli. There is a lot more!

Additionally, this book helps you understand the modern science behind the Budwig Diet and carefully describes important modifications as well, which are optional but encouraged. It is a great resource for anyone interested in Dr. Budwig's works.

I'm really impressed with this book. For the layman, it's laid out SO nicely. I've just begun to research this method for some of my cancer patients so no experience with using it yet. But the lay out is wonderful, summaries great, and the overview of Otto Warburg's work in conjunction with Budwig's theories is compelling and nicely written.

Whether you like it or not, many people are going to try this protocol in fact, many are and have. That will not stop. I hope that one day we get $ out of healthcare so that alt-med cancer treatments can get a REAL chance in research. That's the only way we'll ever know what REALLY works best with cancer.

But in the meantime, folks are mostly left to fend for themselves if they have a type of cancer which modern medicine can't help (Which is most cancers, though not all).

If you are in that group, and are interested in Budwig, this is SO nicely done. Incredibly practical and just gets to the point. Highly recommended.

Makeup: The Ultimate Guide

Makeup: The Ultimate GuideI own almost every makeup book created at the moment, and this is one of my favorites. Besides the photos being gorgeous, the tips and explanations are great and easy to replicate with some patience. I also like it gives step by step of the instructions for eyeshadow looks (almost 50+ pages of them)

Update: So i've had this book for a year and i still love it, i was able to move on from eyeshadow looks to the contouring section which is very detailed and helpful. For those who really want to upgrade their makeup skills, this book is a wealth of information in a variety of areas that you can build on. To date its one of the best beauty makeup books out there.

This book is a must have for your library. Thank you thank you Rae for doing a section on color theory!!! Yeah. Also big kudos for covering mature make up and a very detailed chapter on contouring. LOVE this book. I hate to say this but I wish it was longer. I hope she comes out with another book because I'd be buying it up real quick. Enjoy the video preview.

This book is more inspiration than instruction. Yes, there are step by step instructions and sections on specialty issues, ie, oriental eyes, some makeovers of older women, but essentially the book assumes a certain level of proficiency. That being said, her contouring and highlighting photographs are well worth the price of the book. (Remember to blend.) There are some color charts and tips and at least this author isn't afraid to recommend false eyelashes.

The photographs are largely editorial with an emphasis on eyes. Again like couture, it is not for everyday wear but provides a creative impulse to integrate. I liked that she included the older ladies (also lovely model specimens) with assist to their issues. (I also thought it was a major cautionary tale about sun damage.) I would have like to see greater diversity especially regarding age and profession (non-models please). Yes, those fifteen year olds have pefect skin and are totally unblemished by either time or experience. No challenge there. But find the beauty in the imperfection and make it work.

Again a fun book to look at with some valuable tips and charts.

So as a person of Colour (like Iman or slightly darker) I was more than disappointed to see that there was NOT even one Dark model. The darkest model was barely as dark as JLo. There was a chapter on Asian eyes with 4 looks. There was also a chapter on "Over 40s" with 5 looks. This was slightly helpful since my mother is over 40 and slightly lighter. They do have good tips and a eye colour chart which is probably the most usable thing for a person of dark skin (though the chart is more about eye colour than skin). The are 25 eye looks but not much lips (but more like 1 picture and some helpful tips). There is also a section on 10 minute makeovers with 6 looks. There are a FEW TIPS on foundation, contouring, highlighting, bronzing and applying false eyelashes. There are definitely lost of pictures though there is a step by step layout there is not much step by step explanation for a very novice learner but with practice (which is / will be needed) you will get the hang of it.

I got this book at the library and decided against buying it. The reason had nothing to do with its content, but rather due to needs. This book is chalk full of detail and is an excellent guide, however it is NOT for beginners, and it is not for everyday looks for the most part. It is for dinner parties, or for someone who "plays" with make-up everyday. I found Jemma Kidd's "Masterclass" to be better for people like me who are familear with general make-up techniques and want to try some new looks and ideas but who aren't looking to do anything particularly "out-there" and aren't skilled at make-up, but have some general knowledge. Over-all could be a great book for you, but middle of the road everyday type gals like me it didnt suit...

First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools And the Community

First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools And the CommunityI use this book to prepare for teaching CPR/first aid courses through for the Red Cross. I like how it is organized. It is straightforward, up to date and includes useful graphics and charts. It begins with the most life threatening conditions, (airway blockage, breathing emergencies etc.) and moves on to the less life threatening conditions. At the back of the book, one can find some specific chapters on topics such as asthma and allergic reactions.

There are also some useful sections in this book about prevention of emergencies. I think everybody should be aware of this material. I particularly found ideas for preventing poisoning in children to be useful.

The focus of the book is on keeping a person alive and minimizing shock until more advanced medical help is available. If you are looking for information on wilderness survival, in situations where medical help is not likely to be nearby, you should refer to this book, but you will need to do additional research.

While this book is great for review, it is not the most current offering from the Red Cross. The book is dated March of 2006. The Red Cross updated the techniques and materials in 2011. If you are purchasing this book to bring to your Course, please be advised that this is not the current version and therefore, not up to date on things such as the CPR technique.

As an instructor, I would not accept this book from a student. Make sure you are using the 2011 version.

Advanced First Aid Afloat

Advanced First Aid AfloatI'm very happy to be the first reviewer of this, but a little suprised since it means there are a lot of sailors who don't know what's in this great book.

Levinson and Eastman (both physicians and active sailors) did a great job laying out serious medical problems in a way that even I can understand them. Also, they give readable scenarios that help put these accidents in context. A good example is the opening chapter, which goes into a story of a helmsman who wasn't paying close enough attention, and from an accidental jibe, suffered a head impact from the boom, leaving him out cold on the side deck.

Situations like that are real, and the authors have certainly laid out sound and solid advice for keeping your crew (and yourself) safe. The only reason I'm dinging a star from them is because I wish it could have been a bit bigger to cover even more.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that this book is written in a wonderfully dry sense of humor that can help take the shock out of traumatic situations. Dr Eastman's M.A.S.H. background shows through.

For example, his chapter on burns begins:

"Your trawler, 'Nomad', is rolling along in a heavy following sea, half way between Turtle Bay and Cabo San Lucas, at a comfortable 10 knots. It's 1200 , Tuesday: the galley slave lights off the fires for lunch.

"A maverick wave tosses 'Nomad' onto her beam ends. there is a scream below and the cook skyrockets up the companionway, hair and clothes ablaze.

"First, put out the fire. Don't get burned yourself. Roll him on the deck, wrap him in foul weather gear-anything that's handy.

"He sits on the cabin floor; he shivers with fright and pain, an awesome sight hair and eyebrows singed away; bits of burned clothing hanging on his chest and tummy. He smells like an overdone steak.

"1. Control pain and fright.

a. Cover all burned ares with cool towels, wrung out in fresh water if you have it).

b. Give him 100 mgms (2cc) of Demorol by I.M. injection (see Fig 7)."

... and so on.

I am not a doctor but both my sister and brother in law are and both are sailors. They say the advice is spot on and bang up to date.

I can't recommend the book too highly.

Yo can just access the bodybuilding.com page mentioned constantly in this book and you will have access to the same content. The mention of Bodyspace five times on every single page was just to annoying to keep reading. Yeah, I get that Bodyspace is supposed to help you by interacting with other people trying to achieve fitness goals but I'm pretty sure the main purpose why people join is to post their pictures in little clothes so that others can give them a good rating on the pictures. The transformation stories were the only part of the book worth reading and these you can find in the bodybuilding.com.

Body By Design is a book about a lifestyle plan. It shows the steps you need to take to make sensible changes that will affect your health and fitness for years to come whatever your age. Kris Gethin's book, Body by Design, deserves a 5-star rating, but not for its awe-inspiring, earth-shattering tips on how to shape up with little effort, but rather for its focus on what it means to truly change your life forever.

Kris Gethin introduces the Body by Design plan by highlighting the core principles on which it is based. Kris refers to these as the "four pillars of power." These principles make Body by Design stand out...we are not just talking about diet and exercise, we are talking about "cutting edge, motivational science" the fuel behind true transformation success.

1. Burn and Build. Burn bridges? Well, only the ones that don't help us meet our health and fitness goals. In the book, you get a quick overview of the scientific research linking obesity to friends. As hard as it may be, Kris is right, to succeed means surrounding ourselves with people who can help us succeed, people who truly WANT to see us succeed. "Sometimes you have to burn a few bridges so you can make way for some stronger, more positive ones to be built."

2. Live Out Loud. If you're serious about transforming your body, then share it with everyone. Everyone? Yes, EVERYONE. Not only will you hold yourself accountable, your friends and family will too. Simply stated, "Your life minus goals equals settling for less than your potential."

3. Get Radical. Another great piece of advice. Don't just tell everyone about your new goal, join a social network; reach out to thousands that will hold you accountable! How does it work? Kris explains that the system of accountability works for these primary reasons: the continuous feedback you are certain to get, the bonds that you create by connecting with others with similar goals, and the confidence that comes from experiencing success! Track your performance and share it with others.

4. Take it Home. I love how Kris admits that "life doesn't exist in a vacuum." Life will present its challenges and to increase our chances of success, we should anticipate those challenges now. Day in and day out, we hear about the "what." In this book, Kris introduces us to the "how." You get the "what to change," "how to change," and "how to make that change last!"

Not only is the content great, but I was pleasantly surprised by the look and feel of the book overall. With tips throughout and inspirational quotes from real people, I found myself hungry for more. I especially appreciated the featured transformation stories splashed throughout the book. These are real people with real struggles; people who have faced truly difficult challenges in life but overcame them by taking control of their health and fitness. You have to read the stories for yourself; your jaw WILL drop.

Escape To Paradise: Living & Retiring In Panama

Escape To Paradise: Living & Retiring In PanamaI enjoyed quickly reading through Richard's modest book. It provides a good general sense of what to consider if planning to move to a foreign country and specifically to the community around Boquete. This is one of two glaring problems with the book. First it only covers Boquete and omits any real discussion of anywhere else one might consider living in Panama. The second omission is any serious discussion of alternative countries in which to settle, in Latin America in countries including Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay where Americans have been moving and settling for quite some time, much less other countries in Central America.

It would be like writing a book on moving to the USA and then covering only Ventura, California, and left out the Rocky Mountain states, the Carolinas, or even northern California which only has the Napa wine country, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco Bay area, Monterey/Carmel, Palm Springs, and lots of other areas to consider. What struck me with the comments made by Richard was the lack of perspective on alternatives.

For example in the community of Boguete he mentions that it takes more than 6 hours to drive to the nearest hospital. For him this is perfectly reasonable. Apparently unknown to Richard is that one can live almost anywhere in Costa Rica and be less than 2 hours from a hospital and for 70% of the areas where gringos are settling there is a top rated hospital within 60 minutes or less drive time.

Flying in or out of Panama means using the airport at Panama City which is a 6-7 hour drive from Boquete which makes going in or out of the country a multi-day affair as does going to the capital on business. Contrast that with a drive time of 1-3 hours for most destinations in Costa Rica and going in and out of the country or going to the capital to conduct business or just to do shopping at the discount hypermarkets are going to be very different experiences.

What is not apparent in reading Richard's book is to what extent he spent any time traveling around countries other than Panama in Latin America before making his decision to move to Boquete. In planning where I want to spend my retirement I am investing the time and money to go to multiple countries and travel around for weeks at a time and get knowledge to add to what I get from books, websites, and the experiences of friends and business associates.

I like Richard's overall perspective about living in a foreign country but I would not recommend his approach that is a little too analytical and does not provide adequate weight to many factors I would expect many people would consider important, like access to medical care, hospitals, goods, and services. An MBA inspired spreadsheet is of very limited value as the appraisal is basically a compilation of subjectively evaluated perceptions on aspects like the relative "stability" of the government which means determining the stability of Panama and all the other governments of the western hemisphere.

I would also want to spend a month traveling around the country and checking out as many locations as possible before settling down into one particular town in one corner of the country. As difficult as it is to move and settle down and possible buy land and build your own home it would be wise to try to avoid doing it twice. Most of the people who have written books on retiring in Costa Rica first built or bought homes along the ocean and then moved to the cooler inland highland plateau areas (which also provide better access to goods, services, and hospitals).

It is not a bad book but it could have been much better and should have been for the price. I found the same information, often of little interest, repeated multiple times in the book and with no new information or perspective provided with each retelling. For someone who has spent so much time in university classrooms it is also strange that the concept of a lead in sentence followed by additional sentences that support the first is not actually done within the book. A more critical editor would have helped greatly.

One example is the repeated references to the Empera native tribal members which may be of interest at a cultural anthropological point of view but has no bearing on a "European" or North American moving to Panama and taking up residence. The context is hard to see.

Richard makes the provocative statement that he wishes he had taken more of his tools when moving his household goods to Panama. And he leaves it at that. At first I thought, this is helpful, but then I realized that he had provided no information as to why he regrets not taking more of his tools with him or which tools. Big difference between wishing you had your former metal lathe or table saw and wishing you had your assortment of pipe wrenches or woodworking tools. What could have been a very informative paragraph dies on the page.

Richard is a good writer and one can only hope that he updates this book with a critical eye as to how to provide more information and provide a broader perspective. I suspect that like so many people before him he has spent a year or two settling in to his newly adopted country and then decides to write a book on his experiences. The difficult is in recalling all that transpired over that time and what mistakes were made and what would have been done instead with the aid of hindsight. I am sure that Christopher Howard with his books on Costa Rica and other countries in the area has worked hard to update and add to and edit his books to make them as good as they are today.

I've been following Richard's blog at for several months. You should sign up for his updates. His stories are always entertaining and educational about Panama. The more I learn about Panama, the more exciting it sounds.

Moving to another country is a big decision but Richard's book helps you think through all the benefits of moving to Panama.

Get Escape to Paradise! It is a GREAT book and the best information I have found anywhere about relocating to Panama

Why Panama? The cost of living is much cheaper, 1st class health care costs 80% less than North America, the food is better for you, the air is cleaner, you'll have less stress in your life because you're not worrying about money all the time, and from the photos I've seen Panama is breathtakingly beautiful.

The one comment hear from everyone who has moved to Panama is -they wish they had moved there sooner! Many report that they can live comfortably in Panama on their social security alone.

Thousands of Americans, Canadians, and Europeans have moved to Panama -i hope to be one of them soon.

Congratulations on a fantastic book Richard!

My husband and I both enjoyed this book immensely! We made the move ourselves to Boquete, Panama six years ago. If ONLY we had had this book to help prepare ourselves when we were first considering making the move!! The author tells you everything you need to know about what it's like to live here. We loved the way he included his own experiences in the telling. It made it ever so much more personal and interesting to us. If you have any thoughts about finding your own paradise, and particularly finding your paradise, as we and the author did, here in Boquete, Panama, you MUST buy this book!!

The book had a lot of really great and practical information. We are planning on "retiring" abroad for a multitude of reasons, many of which were mentioned by Richard as his reasons. I really enjoyed making the list of 15 things we wanted in our place of residence. Great exercise!

This has honestly been more helpful to me than any other ex-pat book I have picked up. The real costs of things like health care, electricity and so on. I would have liked more information on other areas, but since Richard lives in Boquete this is his area of expertise.

My only criticism is much of the information gets repeated 3 or more time throughout the book. I feel this is the editors shortfall more than the author. But clearly I am not a writer..

Richard really hit the nail....of all places...on the head !!

Of all the articles and books I RESEARCHED...this one tells it like it really is, with no personal axes to grind. Even tho Richard has obviously been in Panama for quite some time his approach is current. His answers are to questions that the other literature I read failed to ask....much less answer!

Not only that, his approach is far from lofty or detached...it's like you're both sittin' at the breakfast table sharing conversation....with a little wit here and an off hand comment there. None of it a waste, but a nice easy way to give the info YOU'RE interested in !!

Oh....and there are a few little cliff hangers...like what is the meaning of Boquete in _________....well I don't want to spoil it !!

Not that I'm the expert all of a sudden....but we have been there a several times, have bought our land, have a great architect, and are headin' that way really soon !
