Cappadocia

CappadociaFor anyone planning to visit the Cappadocia region of Turkey, this book is a must read. It is informative, enlightning, humorous, and so much more than any other travel book on the subject. The authors, Suzanne and Michael, have spent over twenty years touring the area and getting to know its history, food, culture, terrain, and wonderful people. Their book includes useful maps and photos, many handy travel tips, important basic vocabulary, and detailed descriptions/directions for great walks if you're a hiker. The couple spends a good portion of the year residing in the artisan town of Avanos. Email them that you are coming and perhaps you can meet over a cup of Turkish cay (pronounced like 'chai').

'Cappadocia' is much more than a travel guide. It is written with humor, intimate knowledge, and with obvious love for Cappadocia, Turkey.

My husband and I just got back from an amazing trip to Turkey, and had only 3 days to spend in Cappadocia. If we had it to do over again, we would have spent more time in this jaw-dropping place. We very quickly saw that the two guidebooks we had with us from the US didn't do justice to this region. So we bought Oberheu and Wadenpohl's book in Avanos, Cappadocia, to help us maximize our time there. The book really enhanced our too-brief visit.

We wanted to hike in the valleys, but didn't want to hire a guide for the challenging Rose Valley. Using the book as our guide, we had one of our most memorable and amazing hikes ever. 'Cappodocia' uses maps along with visual cues to guide you along the twisting, mesmerizing valley. The history of the area is presented in a dramatic narrative and really allows you to understand that you are walking among hidden caves, churches, and on sacred ground. Discovering a cave, and seeing the paintings on the ceilings, was absolutely thrilling.

The authors have a real feel for the local people, and urge you to meet the artisans of the area. We did not intend to buy a carpet (so intimidating!), but with the help of a very detailed and interesting chapter on the subject, we visited one of the shops they recommend. The experience in Ali's shop (and our beautiful carpet!) is one of the highlights of our trip.

The book has a European accent, which only makes it more endearing. In the US, before the trip, we shied away from the book because of the price. It was absolutely worth the money. Our only regret is not buying it before our trip, so we would have known to spend more time in this magical region of Turkey.

Security For Women, The Evolution of Empowerment

Security For Women, The Evolution of EmpowermentMs. Clark does an excellent job of focusing on one of the key factors of self-defense: Prevention.

The first half of the book focuses on methods of Prevention, such as:

Situational Awareness

Risk/Threat Assessments

Surveillance Detection (State of the art prevention method)

The second half focuses on Integration (Prevention, defending and surviving). Ms. Clark gives various self-defense situations and looks at them from different angles. This is done effectively by walking the reader through the steps of what is actually going on in the situation (Through a possible victims eyes, perpetrator, etc). By asking questions and understanding mindsets, Ms. Clark changes the way in which one views these situations. What's important is that this change in view will lead to a safer world for the reader.

The book is a little lengthy (450 pages), but is a must read. I hope Ms. Clark continues her efforts to make our world safer.

Well written, lots of diagrams, clear explanations. It would make an excellent textbook for a personal security course. I have hundreds of books and videos on individual protective measures and this book is easily one of the best, if not the best, of the lot.

While women are the primary audience, much of the book is equally applicable to men.

I am a single mother. My daughter is heading off to college. I started to become concerned because I am so used to being able to check on her, meet the boys she dates, know where she is and when she is coming home. I realized that part of what it means when she goes off to college is that I will have limited ability to protect her. This made me so uncomfortable so I started looking at a variety of books, trying to find good information that I could give her before she left.

This book is a goldmine of information about every possible threat a woman could face. In one chapter "Preventing the Worst" there are so many useful tips that I was able to discuss with my daughter. We took the time to have conversations along the lines of "What would you do in this situation?" or "How would you handle it if this happened?" The book became our platform for addressing serious issues that young women must become aware of.

Naturally I gave my daughter the book to take with her to college because it is the kind of book she can use as a reference guide as things come up. I also bought another copy for myself because I found so much useful information in it about how a woman living alone can keep herself safe.

I have never seen anything like this book. The information is so incredibly practical, yet easy to understand. It is presented in such a way that it makes you feel confident about taking more responsibility for your own security while at the same time living with less fear. I strongly recommend this book for any woman. Keep a copy on hand because you never know when you or someone you care about might need it.

I cannot believe this is not one of the top 100 selling Amazon books. This is one of the best personal security type books I have ever read. The information in it is applicable to a much larger community than just women, although the book is clearly written with women as the target audience.

The Everything Flat Belly Cookbook: 300 Quick and Easy Recipes to help drop the belly fat and tone y

The Everything Flat Belly Cookbook: 300 Quick and Easy Recipes to help drop the belly fat and tone your abs)Driven by the excellent reviews and by my enjoyment of Prevention's "Flat Belly Diet" book I decided to purchase this book.

Whether it was planned to sound like the popular diet or merely a coincidence, it is important to note that this book is NOT a companion to Prevention's "Flat Belly Diet". With the title I had expected the book to tie in to Prevention's popular plan but it does not. This book makes use of artificial sugar (splenda), does not include MUFAs etc. The two books are totally unrelated. So if you are looking for a cook book for the Prevention book "Flat Belly Diet" you will want to look elsewhere.

The cookbook "The Everything Flat Belly Diet" boasts many good points. The authors open with a discussion on belly fat and share how what you eat is 80 percent responsible for your weight. They include tips on getting the most for your calorie buck and they include step by step directions for abdominal exercises what to do and when to do them. Another nice factor in the book is the tidbits the authors add to the end of each recipe. Little tips like when to eat your largest meal, using lettuce instead of bread etc.

The authors include 300 recipes they claim will help you shed belly fat. Each recipe includes calories, fat, carbs, protein, sodium and fiber. Recipes are laid out in an easy to read fashion in the 292 page soft cover book. Chapters include; Flat Belly Philosophy, Rise and Shine, It's Breakfast Time!, Lunch Break, Snack Time and more.

The main disappointment in this book is some of the recipes. I was stunned as I read through a few of them. I like simple but these were to simple. For example;

Carrot Dippers (Carrot Sticks, Peanut Butter)

Dip carrots in peanut butter and enjoy.

Pickles in Blankets (Pickles, Fat Free Cheese)

Wrap each pickle in a cheese slice and enjoy.

Peanut Butter Apple Slices (Apple, Peanut Butter)

Can you guess how to make this one?

If they had just been listed as snack suggestions it would have been fine but each of the above recipes and more like them were given there own separate page in the book. Some of the recipes were just plain disappointing. The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe for example involves mixing a prepared cookie mix with egg beaters and syrup. Cheesy fries has you baking prepared frozen french fries and sprinkling on cheese.

In fairness to the author there are some great dishes with simple preparation. If you are not fond of cooking but want to eat low fat this book may be a good choice for you. Sample recipes include; Steak and Caesar Salad, Cannellini Minestrone and Coq au Vin. If you like to cook, this book is most likely to simplistic for you.

The second disappointment is the book lacks photographs. Mouth watering photos do a lot to help me want to prepare a dish. And this book has none.

Personally I find that including healthy fats in my diet is a good thing and I am following a higher fat program which works much better for me. However,

if you want very simple to make low fat recipes with some tips for a flat belly included this may be the right cookbook for you. If you are looking for a companion to Prevention's "Flat Belly Diet", enjoy cooking and/or don't want to use Splenda select a different book.

Bon Apetit!

~ Lee Mellott

Who doesn't want a flatter belly? Probably 99% of people would give anything to have a flatter abdomen. It is somewhat ironic that Fitz Koehler, a fitness expert who has helped many celebrities including the wonderful Dr. Oz, reveals in the introductory chapter that "crunches are not the most important factor affecting your waistline." She goes on to tell us that our eating habits are about 80% responsible for our weight. Do you know how many miles a 150 pound person would have to run to reduce his/her weight by 10 pounds . . . provided there were no changes in diet? Are you ready? Three hundred and sixty miles . . . Yes you read that right 360 miles! Yipes . . . it would take me a long, long time to run that many miles. You too?

The authors tell us that it is much easier to eat a little less every day than to run off the extra calories taken in through our culinary excesses. Makes sense, huh?

I think I said something like this is my book, too, but the authors compare calories to money, telling us we need to spend our calories wisely. Most Americans simply don't. They'll complain about the cost of organic Romaine, yet when you run into them in snack aisle at the grocery store you'll see them purchasing a $4.00 bag of potato chips. What are they getting for their money? Fat, calories, and very little nutritional value.

This book is great for people who enjoy meat, although a vegetarian chapter is included for those who don't. You'll find 300 flat belly recipes including beef, pork, poultry, seafood, and even desserts.

While I generally don't do meat, there are a couple people living with me who do . . . and who could definitely benefit from a healthier diet. Looking for a flatter belly . . . then buy this book!

I found this book unless and was highly disappointed.....if you have any knowledge of how to eat healthy then don't waste your money. These aren't really recipes...more like "meal combination ideas".

For me this was a complete waste of money.

The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back, and Everything

The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back, and Everything Else You Need to Know About a Cesarean BirthI had a planned c-section and found this book to be very helpful, especially the exercize plan for recovery. The book provides a nice description of the proceedure, but it is the chapters on emotional impacts of c-section and information for your partner really set it apart. It is nice that the book covers both planned and unplanned c-sections. It is nice that the authors provide warnings before content that may be upsetting so that you can decide whether or not to read that section. I have recommended the book to several friends and they all said that the book helped them with their recoveries as well.

I tend to be a person who is not satisfied with just one source of information and do extensive research on every subject that I am educating myself on. After looking at many different books and resources, I can honestly say that this is the only book that you need to prepare you for your c-section. This comprehensive reference provides thorough information while maintaining a humanistic approach to the subject matter. This book contains a whole chapter on the emotional aspects of having a cesarean which I found to be very helpful, since it is something that is not usually addressed. On top of the information included to aid you in your physical recovery there is another chapter with workout information when you are ready for that. I would have paid twice the price I did for this truly "essential" resource

I have had two c-sections and in the past and I am about to have another. I thought I knew everything about how to handle pain and all of the problems that go with the surgery but this book has shown me things that I did not know. This is a great book! It is very informative and I really learned alot by reading it!

Three years ago, I underwent an emergency c-section and have had emotional issues surrounding it since. Now that I've learned with this second pregnancy that I am not a candidate for an attempted vaginal birth, I decided it was high time to educate myself as much as possible.

After reading this book, not only am I feeling more prepared for the upcoming c-section but I'm also more understanding of the one I had years ago. I heartily recommend this for every woman, whether she's pregnant and planning on a vaginal birth or a mom that has had a c-section in the past.

I bought the book solely for the workout chapter. I had had one c-section already and never was able to find a workout routine that didn't end up causing me pain at the incision site. This workout is gentle enough to start with, but effective in getting back your abdominal muscles. I've been doing it for 5 weeks now and my stomach is significantly flatter. I've also lost 8 pounds. I can't say much about the rest of the book because, since it was my second c-section, I didn't need to read it.
