The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm: A Cultivator's Guide to Small-Scale Organic Herb Production--Including 79 detailed herb profiles, growing information, and medicinal usesAs a student of Chinese Medicine with interest in growing medicinal herbs, this book is a coveted companion and guide. Neatly organized and expertly explained. Peg cares to get reliable source information and has years of experience in a field where few have been brave enough to venture. Her farm and passion are sources of inspiration and I am so grateful for the guidance.

This book is well thought out with the care and craft of a seasoned gardener. For casual readers, determined growers, students and savants, needs are met with a practical and informative approach, easily understood and absorbed for growing at any skill level. Photos clearly convey the important details and imagery that other texts have yet to provide. Helpful charts are included with information that would take years (if not lifetimes) to otherwise compile. Peg has done the extensive footwork for us and passes on informational seeds for us to grow beautiful, effective, healthy, healing botanicals.

For students, this is a priceless resource to deepen our studies and understanding of how the medicine grows and thrives. Understanding the process and background of cultivation is essential to a well-rounded education in herbal medicine.

THANK YOU PEG SCHAFER!!!

Peg Schafer has created a beautifully layed out book for anyone interested in growing Chinese medicinal plants. After many years of growing Western herbal botanicals, I was not quite sure the best way to start going about growing Chinese herbs. Having a book available written and created by someone with years of experience growing Chinese medicinals, is a real treat and a real gem and it has installed the confidence in me that I too can grow these plants over here in the Western world. The pictures are fabulous and the layout is easy to follow. This book has also been a wonderful addition for me as a student of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) as it is SO nice and invaluable to be able to see the picture of the whole plant I am studying besides just reviewing a dried portion of the plant and a sketch. I am so excited to begin growing these plants and to see them in person! I highly recommend this book to anyone passionate about plants and who wants to learn more about growing Chinese Medicinal herbs.

I am not a grower of Chinese herbs. I grow Western herbs for my own use, and make tinctures and such from them. I am interested in Chinese herbalism and was looking for a guide to the plants that would be helpful both in understanding their herbal uses and in making decisions about whether to grow them. This book is written for the audience implied in the title, and goes far beyond what I can use, but it is also excellent in satisfying my needs.

It is clearly written, beautifully and helpfully illustrated, and well laid out. The descriptions of the plants include Chinese names as well as Western ones, their uses in Chinese herbal preparations, recipes if the herbs have culinary uses, and extensive instruction on cultivation and processing. The many tables add to the book's usefulness, and include a table listing plants by invasive potential, which is a concern of mine, as it is a global problem as the immune system of local ecosystems becomes increasingly weakened by pollution and soil depletion. This table alone is witness to the author's thoroughness and care. An outstanding contribution to the field.

See, this was the quandary. My wife loved gardening and I loved herbs--for their medicinal and tonic uses, but not growing them. It seemed that we were worlds apart in our interests.

But, along came this new book that tied together gardening (or farming) and Chinese medicinal herbs! I bought a few copies, one for us and one as a present, and, lo and behold! My wife and I were more or less on the same page concerning growing things for the first time in years.

This book is wonderful for several reasons:

1. The herbs are listed by their Latin names, their English names (if they have one), and several varieties of their Chinese names.

2. Ms. Schafer lists the common medicinal uses of each herb.

3. She gives the climate they like and which other plants they like to be near.

4. Clear color photos of each herb accompany the write up of each herb.

5. Sources of herbs, books, and affiliated organizations can be found in the back of the book.

6. Last but not least, Ms. Schafer is available for phone consultations at a reasonable price.

I consider this book a breakthrough for gardeners and farmers in North America and also an important reference guide for all who love herbs, especially Asian herbs.

This is a beautiful book! It is a dream to own such a thorough and comprehensive guide to growing Chinese Herbs. Peg Schafer has surpassed anything I have ever seen or expected to see on the subject. What an amazing life's project filled with dedication. The pictures of the herbs in various stages and settings are delightful. The advice based on her experience of growing Chinese herbs is so appreciated. The tables and inserts have been immensely helpful, as has all the information on botanical names, description, propagation, culture, harvest, medicinal uses, special notes and so much more.

Waking the Tiger Within: How to Be Safe from Crime on the Street, at Home, on Trips, at Work, and at

Waking the Tiger Within: How to Be Safe from Crime on the Street, at Home, on Trips, at Work, and at School with New Fighting Terrorism ChapterScott Flint is an accomplished martial artist and self defense trainer. In this book he will teach you ways to increase your awareness, methods to develop your instinctual fighting ability and techniques to keep you safe wherever you go.

This is not a book for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Scott goes right for the jugular, and pulls no punches with the techniques shown. His style is very much in your face and up close and personal. As he puts it you must become your assailants worst nightmare if you are to survive

As a full time self defense trainer and part time law enforcement officer, I am constantly amazed by recommendations made by well-intentioned people that you should give in to the attacker and just do whatever he says. My experience and research has shown that the individuals who are mentally aware, properly trained and are willing to fight back are the survivors. This book clearly shows how to do all three.

The good news is that statistics show that the people that are the most prepared to defend themselves are the most likely not to get attacked. Although most attackers are dumb, they are not stupid. Just as the tiger looks for the weakest animal in the herd, the predator looks for signs of weakness when choosing a victim. Just the mere act of preparing yourself may be enough to keep you safe.

Waking the Tiger Within is easy to follow and understand and should be considered a must-read for anyone interested in defending themselves and their loved ones from violent attacks.

"What a great book! Just finished the first reading last night. I am an NRA Certified Instructor in the Refuse To Be A Victim(r) Program, and of course many of the things mentioned are included in our seminars. A number of other items brought up will be finding their way into future seminars I'll be conducting. Thanks for a super job."

It is full of useful tips and ideas to keep you and your loved ones safe. This book should be required reading for everyone. If you are contemplating buying this book, go ahead. You will not be sorry you did. Good job, Scott!

Easy to read, understand, and remember, this concise volume supplies straightforward instructions on personal protection from criminals. The advice is to the point, minimizing situational nuance and anecdotal discussion. The author explains how almost anyone can avoid being an easy mark and how he/she can disable an attacker and escape danger if necessary. Children are told how to deal with would-be kidnappers and bullies.

In modern societies, many individuals are so burdened by concepts of sensitivity and political correctness that they are ready prey for criminals. The author pulls no punches in emphasizing why and how these attitudes must be set aside. To be safe, there are things people simply MUST do and things people simply MUST NOT do in a world menaced by strongarm carjackings, gang wildings, vicious home invasions, and terroristic spree killings.

In one day, most readers can absorb this book and steel a wobbly outlook or strengthen an existing resolve to be a non-victim.

The Medical Advisor: The Complete Guide to Alternative & Conventional Treatments : Home Edition

The Medical Advisor: The Complete Guide to Alternative & Conventional Treatments : Home EditionI have several other medical books, but as far as diagnosing symptoms, this is the best. You can find an entire chart for arm pain or something like that, then you can check out possible diseases. With other books, you need to know what you have first. I also like how the book is set up. You read about the symptoms and which ones require medical attention, then you read about possible causes, and cure options -both traditional and alternative. I also use this book to check my medications, since there is an extensive list in the back. And I love the pictures of the body in the back -which aided me in realizing I probably had a swollen gland and not a cancerous lump. I wish they would do an updated version of this book. Colleagues at work are forever asking me to "bring in your book," to diagnosed their families. It's must-have home reference. (I need to add that I have the hardback version, and I am assuming the paperback is the same.)

I bought this book for my sister-in-law for Christmas 3 years ago and have been wanting one for myself ever since. This book is the most informational medical book for non-medical persons I have ever used.

I first came across this book from a friend. I thought it will be a good reference book, and that's what it actually is. It gives you a general idea of certain aches and pains that you encounter in your day to day life. This books helps you to take some initial remedial measures before wasting your time at the Doctors. I say this because some of the illness can be overcome without pumping a lot of pills into your system. This book is good to understand your body, its illness and take care of it.

Color Me Confident: Change Your Look - Change Your Life!

Color Me Confident: Change Your Look - Change Your Life! This book utilizes a well-respected system of color classification called the Munsell system, but then it fails to apply the Munsell system fully in its proferred color recommendations.

The Munsell system classifies colors according to three characteristics: hue (undertone), value (depth), and chroma (clarity). A color's hue may be either warm (yellow-based) or cool (blue-based). A color's value measures its lightness or darkness. A color's chroma measures its clarity or softness.

The book explains these three aspects of color evaluation but then sets out categories that fail to incorporate all three aspects. According to the Color Me Confident categories, you must select one dominant characteristic out of the Munsell system, i.e. that your appearance is deep (a value measurement) or cool (a hue classification) or soft (a chroma measurement). You are permitted one secondary characteristic, but the system does not accomodate the third category of color classification. Thus, if your color value is deep, your color hue is cool, and your color chroma is soft, you are forced to choose between 3 categories (Deep/Cool, Cool/Soft, or Soft/Cool), each of which only includes 2 of these characteristics. There is no category that accomodates deep, cool, and soft. You are supposed to choose which characteristics "dominate" your look; however, such a choice goes against the logic underlying the system. Each of the Munsell categories measures a different aspect of color; these different aspects cannot be readily and sensibly compared. Sorry for the cliche, but it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

Despite these flaws, the book may be useful in identifying your underlying color characteristics and then applying information from the different color categories to help improve your color choices.

I looked through this book at a local bookstore and decided not to buy it mainly because the color categories it presents are superficial and inapplicable to a great many people. We are categorized according to our "dominant characteristics," i.e., by our hair colors and eye colors--not according to our "season," a more subtle and sophisticated categorization that includes skin tone. Seasonal color analysis requires a good deal more training and artistry than you would need to recognize, say, a Deep type (dark hair and dark eyes).

Spillane and Sherlock's Color Me Beautiful's Looking Your Best categorizes people by both their dominant characteristics and their seasons. The problem with that book's approach is that each dominant characteristic is linked to only two seasons. For example, if you are Deep, you're either an Autumn or a Winter, but not a Spring or a Summer. This seems to be why the new CMB book, Color Me Confident, categorizes people by only two of the three color characteristics defined by Munsell. If you're Deep and Cool, it's assumed that you must be Clear as well, since Winter coloring is clear, not soft. Cool and Soft is Summer.

In the seasonal system, you could be a dark-haired, dark-eyed Spring or Summer, or a light-haired, light-eyed Autumn or Winter. So much variation is possible within each season, in fact, that the dominant-characteristic system can help in customizing your personal palette. A black Summer palette will have stronger colors than a blond Summer palette. Yet both will have the cool, soft look characteristic of Summer.

CMB's Looking Your Best defines the dominant characteristic types generally enough that you may be able to determine yours even if none of them obviously suit you. But Color Me Confident defines each type so narrowly that one type is presented as the "catch-all" for people who don't fit the other types: the so-called "Soft" type, which contains a good deal of earthy Autumn colors. I look terminally ill in earthy Autumn colors. Each of the palettes in this book is a hodgepodge of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter colors (as defined by Carole Jackson in the original Color Me Beautiful) that may be suitable to one dominant characteristic, but are not, as a group, suited to me--nor, I daresay, to many other people, either.

I'll stick with the seasonal theory for color advice, and I recommend Jackson's and Spillane-Sherlock's books over CMB's latest.

I devour all books written on this subject since it is my passion. This book is beautiful looking and talks about much more than color. About half of the book offers suggestions on how to dress your body shape, find your personal style, and apply makeup. The color theory presented here is a modern improvement on the seasonal color system introduced over 20 years ago in Color Me Beautiful. However this book no longer uses seasonal references for color types, possibly as a way to appease women who think that being a 'season' is outdated. But it is based on the very same principles of color intensity, values, and hues. I particularly liked the photos and suggestions for each type on how to wear black when it is not an ideal color for you. But I caution readers that determining your personal color type from a book can be difficult. My own coloring could fit into three different categories based on the checklists of hair, skin, and eye colors suggested. Read the book for its great information but then see a skilled colorist to be professionally typed using an objective hands-on process to confirm your ideal palette. I've seen too many people who have self-analyzed their coloring using a book who have then built entire wardrobes around a less than ideal palette. The results of an accurate color analyis are too wonderful to leave to chance.

The book is full of useless fillings. Finding your colors is limited to few hair and eye color combinations. It also depends on you doing a test with different colored fabrics & determing how the color reflect against your skin. After reading the book, I still don't know what my colors are. Besides, with so many different color hues on the market, how can one tell if what you're buying is an ever green or true green for example, confusing. The lack of pictures showing the types of collars they're recommending for different body types (e.g Mandarin

collar,cowl,bardot...)...is annoying,to say the least. Questionnaires are poorly structured, & the section on makeup, underwear & accessories is trivial. Save your money (i'm glad the book I read was a borrow from the library) and save your time. Pass.

This is a variation on the color system that assigns people to the four seasons. It is an interesting addition to that idea, I was only disappointed that they spent as little time as they did on the color information. A good part of the book is dedicated to body shape and styling tips. By the way, David Kibbe's theories in his book Metamorphosis are the best ideas ever re dressing to suit one's shape, the very best, and yet he seems to get very little attention. People interested in this book might want to check out his, as well. It is out of print, but available used and therefore inexpensive. "Color Me Beautiful," by Carole Jackson is about the original color system--seasonal--and is still a good read.

The Doctors Book of Food Remedies: The Latest Findings on the Power of Food to Treat and Prevent Hea

The Doctors Book of Food Remedies: The Latest Findings on the Power of Food to Treat and Prevent Health Problems - From Aging and Diabetes to Ulcers and Yeast InfectionsThis fact-filled volume has foods listed in alphabetical order, interspersed with health conditions that can be remedied. Some of the latter are intuitively expected in a book like this (e. g., heartburn, high blood pressure), while others are not (e. g., lupus, aging, motion sickness).

This work consists of 140 short chapters, each on a separate topic. This makes it easy to zero-in on a particular issue of interest or concern without getting bogged down in details and tangents. Furthermore, there is also a handy, profuse index for cross-reference of foods and health conditions.

The information presented is extensive. While some of it can pass for "conventional wisdom", other information cannot--at least not easily. Did you know, for example, that beans can stabilize blood sugar and lower cholesterol levels? Or that the quercetin found in the skins of apples can guard against heart attacks? Or that honey has both antibacterial and antibiotic properties? Or that the oleic acid found in avocados can help lower cholesterol levels? Or that the lowly, smelly onion is full of compounds that can help prevent the development of cancer and coronary heart disease?

Prior to purchasing this book I posted a couple of comments below M. Gouin's three star review (who knocked it because it promotes milk as a healthy food). Now that I have had a chance to look it over I thought I would review it.

Over-all I like the book and would recommend it for just about everyone. Each easy to read chapter focuses on one specific food with a recipe at the end of each chapter. I haven't tried the recipes yet, but they look pretty good. There are a lot of health books available offering nutritional information that usually focus on supplements. And while I am a proponent of supplements, this book focuses on the specifics of food sources which should be our primary source of sound nutrition. Man will never be able to extract or create anything as perfectly as nature.

That said, I could not give it five stars because it comes from a highly commercialized viewpoint, very typical of Prevention Magazine (the editors of this book). IE: some of the otherwise great-looking recipes promote the use of microwaving a very poor way to cook foods and one that should be avoided. It lists ingredients such as wheat germ an old-school 'health food' known to go rancid so quickly that it may cause more problems than it's worth. But this is easy to ignore. The chapter on milk is lacking in any substantive recent research and, while not as old-school as 'milk is the devil' is still quite behind the latest info. (Please see my 2nd post under the comments of M. Gouin's review for details.)

Finally, the binding of the book I received was pretty cheap. The covers are thin and curl back away from the pages after only a short time of use. The inside is printed on cheap newsprint with uneven ink distribution (going from normal to very light, page-to-page). Although the ISBN's are identical, apparently I purchased a "discounted" copy (@ $8.99) so maybe the higher-priced version will be a better quality, and for that reason the number of stars I gave it did not reflect this. Also worth noting is the description says it was updated in 2008, but the copyright inside the book shows 2007 (and is also reflected on the copyright page of the "look inside" view on the Amazon website).

Other than this, I still recommend it because it contains a lot of useful information. Another book, perhaps a bit better and with a similar food-focus, is 'Secrets of Longevity: Hundreds of Ways to Live to Be 100' by Dr. Maoshing Ni.

Jan, 2011 Update: I returned the softcover edition I mentioned above and replaced it with the hardcover book. The hardcover is pretty good for the $15 price (Especially when you consider the size of the book!)

This is one of tbe best books I have ever purchased! My mother suffered a stroke 2 years ago, and has headaches frequently. The only relief she had was liquid Tylenol which eased the pain. Since reading this book, I discovered that ginger root relives her pain as well and quicker than Tylenol, or similar pain medication. I am so pleased with the natural remedies that this book provides, that now I am finding remedies for cholestrol problems that my aunt is encountering. This book is such a treasure and I appreciate the fact that natural remedies are available, rather than having to use pharmaceuticals, that are potentially harmful. I read this book often, as I am continually finding natural remedies that are so helpful.

Thank you,

I had high hopes for this book considering the wonderful title but soon found it is run of the mill conventional. As soon as I hit the "Dairy is good for you" chapter, I knew the authors were not fully informed as dairy is of concern and may CAUSE much osteoporosis not cure it.

This book is good for the person who is just beginning to think of food as medicine but leaves out many of the important new facts regarding possible negative food issues.

The Medicine Wheel Garden: Creating Sacred Space for Healing, Celebration, and Tranquillity

The Medicine Wheel Garden: Creating Sacred Space for Healing, Celebration, and TranquillityCreating Sacred Space means more to us today than every before. I feel that this suthor has really offered us bold new perspectives along with numerous alternatives for coming to balance in these trying times. This book is a valuable, in-depth gardening guide with far more sensitivities than are usual!

1. I find the resource guide in the back most valuable.

2. The herbal lexicon that is the central third of the book is amazingly detailed; here is the info I need to propagate native herbs & wildflowers.

3. Research on the medicine wheels as ancient landscape features is the best I've yet encountered, & offered with great respect & reverence for sacred space.

4. Part III in this book is filled with imaginative new ideas, recipes, & suggestions for gifts & projects to make from one's gardening success.

What a fine book!

The most unique book on this subject, likely to make other gardening books out dated...

Based primarily on Amerindian healing and spiritual practices, The Medicine Wheel Garden details using a circular garden design as a personal, sacred, reflective space for pleasure, renewal, and as a home for wildlife. While much of the book is given over to explanations of symbolism and ceremonies including the use of spiritual and ceremonial items in the garden and details for performing seasonal healing rituals, chapters are included on choosing a garden site, style and plants. 50 herbs are profiled with short sections on history, modern and traditional uses, cautions to use, growing tips, and a sketch. Additional chapters provide culinary recipes and craft ideas as well as many recipes for beauty aids such as skin scrubs, shampoos, lotions, and soaking teas. While mainly a guide to creating a sacred space, gardening information is sound and conservative and includes the importance of compost and mulch as well as the importance of selecting the right plant for the right site. The Medicine Wheel Garden takes the rejuvenating and healing properties of gardening a step beyond.
