Chicken Soup for the Soul: Empty Nesters: 101 Stories about Surviving and Thriving When the Kids Lea

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Empty Nesters: 101 Stories about Surviving and Thriving When the Kids Leave HomeI have had the honor of reviewing many of the 'Chicken Soup,' books and I have never been disappointed; I don't say that lightly. They all have been great reads, funny, encouraging and well worth my time. However, this one definitely stuck a cord within me, and it was perhaps one of the best I have read thus far.

I am one that has been through the empty nest and it is not always a very comfortable place to be. Loneliness and the constant feeling that something (or someone) is missing fills the home, but take heart, this too will pass.

Inside the pages of this delightful book we are treated to story after story of parents that have come upon that page in this lives. The stories are often laugh-out-loud funny, heart-touching, and practical. Just about every emotion is shown in the different tales that are shared. They are short stories, easy to read, and will leave you with the feeling that you are not alone. I liked the shortness of the stories because you will be able to read one or more a day and have a daily dose of encouragement.

It truly is a great help to know that others, from all walks of life, have experienced exactly what you are, and have made it through fine. You will be encouraged by these words and go away with the attitude that life goes on, and perhaps it is your time to shine once again. Well done. Highly recommended.

I remember well the lonlieness of those first few years of being an empty nester. Any empty nester will relate to many of the sweet and touching stories that parents share in this wonderful book. It is such a great read for any parent anticipating or having gone through this season of life since it is always so helpful to know you are not alone in your feelings and reactions. I truly believe in mentoring from your own experience, and that is what this wonderful book accomplishes. It would make a great gift for anyone you know who is either struggling or enjoying the inevitable time in every parent's life.

And before we know it a new generation fills our home with grandchildren and the nest isn't empty anymore!

Kudos to the authors that took the time to compile this precious book.

Empty Nesters is a collection of poignant stories about parents dealing with a wide range of emotions when their children leave home--numbness, heartache, loneliness, and even exhilaration. The timing of its publication couldn't have been better for me because I'm coping with my own empty nest. I could relate to other parents who faced empty bedrooms, empty laundry baskets, empty cars. Wanda Quist wrote, "The house is so quiet I hear the ice maker drop cubes into its bin." Another mother sends so many care boxes to her son that they're stacked all the way to the ceiling in his dorm room. But the book is not just about mothers. Fathers, sons and daughters also tell their stories, which gives the reader a broader perspective.

Empty Nesters is organized into sections with titles such as "First Flights," "Under Our Wings and in Our Hearts," "Out on a Limb," and "Ruffled Feathers." The stories are each just two or three pages. Sprinkled throughout are light poems and so-true cartoons. I laughed aloud at parents staring at a phone waiting for their child to call, kids who come home on weekends with tons of laundry for Mom to wash, and a father imagining turning an empty bedroom into a pool room while his wife laments that the child has grown up.

For those parents who are anticipating their empty nest and those who are dreading it, Empty Nesters will help them realize they're not alone, that this time of life is just another inevitable stage that every parent survives. As Patricia Cena Evans wrote, "It was time for me to welcome this next season of life and move on." Yes, I thought. Me too!

Empty-nest syndrome is the name given to a psychological condition that can affect a man or a woman around the time that one or more of their children leave home. This phrase is used to encapsulate the feelings of sadness and loss that many parents experience when their children no longer live with them or need day-to-day care.

"Empty Nesters, 101 stories about surviving and thriving when the kids leave home"is a delightful book that discusses, as the title suggests, various stories by the different authors on facing and coping with the empty nest syndrome.

The stories are inspiring, touching, and amusing. It will help guide the parents who are going through this process to rediscover themselves, theirs needs, and each other.

The empty nest does not have to be an end of a story, but a new beginning for the parents as well as for the children, where everyone will face new challenges, achieve personal growth, and improve their personal and interpersonal lives.

Empty nest is about loss, but it is also about rebirth and about re-experiencing life and the children who left us in a different light.

Finally, the stories in this book will inspire the readers as well as educate them on managing and reclaiming their lives. It will provide them with psychological and emotional support by edifying the process of coping with separation, and by helping them realize that their current experience of loss is universal, because many others like them have already embarked on this same journey and survived it successfully.

In My Heart I Carry a Star: Stories for Advent

The Empty Nesters Soul certainly rings true. Why? because the empty nest experience is both wonderful and heart-wrenching at the same time. The real question is, "How do we respond?" Life is always full of opportunity, and for the empty nester, what we do next has the potential to be redemptive in so many ways.

The Beauty Experiment: How I Skipped Lipstick, Ditched Fashion, Faced the World without Concealer, a

The Beauty Experiment: How I Skipped Lipstick, Ditched Fashion, Faced the World without Concealer, and Learned to Love the Real MeThis is a hilarious and courageous book about one individuals authentic battle to find her self worth in the midst of all the inner and outer messages, subtle to blatant, sacred to profane, that assure us of our failure to be good enough, worthy enough, attractive enough, etc. That fear of rejection lies so deep in our hearts and minds that we seem endlessly vulnerable to any variety of fear monger from playground bully to the political scold, to advertising promisers of making us better if we just buy that thing. This author has the toughness and determination to take a hard look at where all the manipulation is coming from as she also discovers her own goodness, strength and yes, beauty that always has been hers. I love that she took a stand, held her ground and through that stubbornness and fight learned so much about where those scary voices come from. The challenge to become authentic is universal and timeless for men and women, whether it's over the matter of make-up, or about carrying weapons, what to do with ones life, or how to serve the country, none of us escapes this gauntlet of life. Thank you Ms. Baker for giving us such a crisp, funny and honest look at how you managed. Bravo!

We've all struggled with image maintenance, but hardly anyone will admit it. This brave book is better than any dozen "How Not to Look (Old, Fat, Otherwise Bad) Books."

If you ever checked yourself out in a store window's reflection or tried on 15 coats only to leave the store empty-handed, you've finally found a sympathetic soul and a great read. Now in the AARP zone, I can tell you that the issues really don't go away ... because now you get to worry about being fat AND old AND invisible.

Unless, like Phoebe, you just pull the plug on the ridiculous beauty treadmill and start living instead. Reasonable maintenance and hygiene, of course, but then ... you look how you look? What a revolution!

She also shines in this book with her take on being an expat trailing spouse. Her experience is exactly how it really is to be the wife/appendage in an alien place. Again, no one is supposed to admit that what appears to be an "adventure" is actually often a bleak, lonely, depersonalizing domestic struggle, but it is, even if you don't have new-baby stress, as Phoebe also does.

I could hardly resist reading this book straight through, because I wanted it to last.

This book really isn't just about the no-makeup, no-fashion experiment; it's about the struggles of an exhausted young wife/mother living in Hong Kong with a husband who's frequently away. She writes really well and I enjoyed the book a lot, but it seemed to me that she got off-topic. I sort of got the impression that she originally wrote it as a general memoir, but maybe the publishers decided that the beauty/fashion boycott idea was a good marketing hook. SPOILER ALERT: In the end, she goes back to using makeup and shopping again, and I didn't get the sense that the big "experiment" had really changed anything for her.

Had the author not jumped back and forth between time zones, but detailed her beauty experiment more chronologically, this book may have sustained my interest a little better, because the basic premise--forcing oneself to eliminate make-up for a year--is interesting.

It's one thing to sit down after New Year's begrudgingly with a book that looks like it might be a list of to-do's or a "guide to a better you". But surprisingly, The Beauty Experiment is not that. It's a beautifully woven tale about a woman confronting her demons, and they just happen to be the same ones that many of the rest of us also have lurking in our closets. What makes this book so powerful is that while it is a thoughtful expose of ideas that are hard to buck, and perceptions in society that are powerful windmills (even if they are just windmills), it is also a fascinating story. Almost immediately I found myself thinking about how I see myself (beautiful? plain? old? flawed?) alongside a sense of wonder at the vivid descriptions of streets and life in Hong Kong. Perhaps what this book does best, through its exquisite writing, is allow the reader to confront big ideas while sinking into the kinds of characters and places that make reading so worthwhile.

Fashionable Folks Hairstyles 1840-1900

Fashionable Folks Hairstyles 1840-1900The book is broken down into decades and within each decade the author gives a brief overview of the hair styles worn by both men and women. The good thing about this book is that it includes men. Often times I read books about the Victorian Era and fashion and the men are not mentioned. So it was nice for the author to include the guys. After the brief summary the author would present a number of photos and explain the hair style and clothes. Within the book we have some fun facts about hair(I wish there were more of them) And also hair ads from the 1800s(interesting but not really what I cared to read about). Each page has a picture and then a paragraph or two explaining the hairstyle (and often clothes) of the people in the photo.

I think the author does a good job of presenting her information. Although, she does make a few mistakes. On page 25 she comments that a woman is holding a sleeping baby. I looked at it again, and thought oh no, that child is dead. I would have liked additional photos. Also, it would have been nice to see some ethnic photos of African Americans(although they are hard to come by).

The book is a quick read. I finished it in an hour and I'm not a fast reader. I think this book is good for those who are looking to break down the hairstyles for both men and women in various decades. This book will go in my collection for future reference. However, the price tag is a bit steep in my opinion.

This is an interesting book and can see the value of the information. Although it did not help me uncover any revelations, it did narrow the timeline possibilities of the picture.

A nice book about hairstyles and how to do such hairsyles from 1840-1900. What styles were "in" which were not and why.

This is a great book if you're tired of your modern 21st century hairdo! Just kidding. Fashionable Folks is a book I'm using for research about hairstyles at that time. It is interesting to see that in the 19th century, popular trends in hairstyles are very much as they are today. Styles come and go, and extremely popular styles resurge. This book is also very helpful if you have some old photos of relatives and you're trying to place a date on when they were photographed. Amazon is a great way to find books for research.

I was excited for this book, but found it to be disappointing in almost every way. If you know nothing about 19th century fashion history and would like a light read that you can finish in one sitting, then perhaps this book might be entertaining and interesting to you. However, if you were hoping to find a well organized chronology of images with supporting research that documents the specifics of hair styles, what they were called contemporaneously, or tidbits of any other specific information such as people who wore certain hairstyles or helped to popularize them, you will barely find any of that in this book. After a "Fast Facts" and "Fun Facts" section (one page each-which appear to have been targeted towards a grade school audience), the book is organized into chapters, each focusing on one decade. Every chapter contains on average between 12-20 images, the majority of chapters closer to the low end of the spectrum. The print quality is poor, low-contrast grayscale--a few images are terribly pixelated!-and many of the images chosen feel almost arbitrary, and often do not even show the hair style of the sitter very clearly. Most maddening of all, however, are the image captions. With the exception of a few, the majority of them are redundant and completely subjective in a way that makes it seem as if the author is struggling to find something to say to fill up space. ie. pointing out that the sitter is smiling, standing, lovely, or has a serious expression, etc. Others use whatever autobiographical information the author might have, such as detailing an officers rank and service for 9/10 of the description and then ending by addressing his hair: "He wore longish hair and a full chin beard and mustache." That is seriously a direct quote from the book. Other than being 'the photo detective' (I'm guessing a self-prescribed title) it seems highly unlikely that this author has any real historical expertise, nor the inclination to attempt to achieve any.

Woman's Retreat Book: A Guide to Restoring, Rediscovering and Reawakening Your True Self --In a Mome

Woman's Retreat Book: A Guide to Restoring, Rediscovering and Reawakening Your True Self --In a Moment, An Hour, Or a WeekendI appreciate the thoroughness of this book, as well as its outline structure. Each chapter addresses various aspects of the retreat, breaking down the how, where, why, what, etc. in an understandable and useful way. Even more importantly, each chapter stands on its own, and you can skip around, looking for specific answers, or read the whole way through, while still gleaning the essence of the book. I am reading the book all the way thru, in order, yet have already been able to do a retreat that was useful even though I haven't gotten to the end. This aids the process of retreating, since it takes the pressure off the retreatant, and doesn't create added pressure that would dissuade one to retreat in the first place. An undaunting, very informative book.

Bravo! I applaud this author's message to women everywhere. It's time for us to learn to say "no" and take the time to fill ourselves back up again without feeling guilty. So many times I have asked a fellow mother or career woman, "How are you?" and the typical response is, "I'm so tired...I have 100 things to do..." And you know the rest of the laundry list they spout. For once I would love to hear one of them say, "You know what? I feel great! I just took a nap, or I read a novel I've been meaning to finish, or I'm going home to soak in the tub." Perhaps if more women would receive Jennifer Louden's books as gift they would begin to see how they can make this time for themselves no matter what kind of life they are living. Thank you Jennifer for spreading the word. I'm going out for a walk now for no other reason except to see how many more trees have changed their color this weekend.

This is absolutely one of the most well-read, underlined, highlighted and corners-turned-down books on my bookshelf! As a SoulCollage® facilitator and leader of many weekend retreats on the topics of wholeness, authenticity, spirituality and creative expression, there really aren't any other books out there on the topic of creating a retreat that aren't strictly Christian-oriented. Lucky for all of us that this is such an excellent resource!

I love this book because it helps me on two levelscreating my own oasis of solitude when I retreat by myself, and creating retreats for other women who are seeking Spirit and inner connection.
