Medicine for the Outdoors: The Essential Guide to First Aid and Medical Emergency, 5th Edition

Medicine for the Outdoors: The Essential Guide to First Aid and Medical Emergency, 5th EditionI have recently read a few books on first responder type medical aid for wilderness scenarios ... and this is BY FAR the best. If you are looking for a book that goes well beyond even advanced first aid, and presents the material in a pratical way using common languge ... this book is it. There is a balance with books like this on either being too elementary (i.e. "dumbed-down") or being too academic (i.e. filled with technical jargon that goes over the head of most people), but this book is a great balance between the two. The author has a gift of explaining things in a very straight-forward fashion.

This book covers almost every conceivable medical situation you will likely encounter in the field. The only downside is that the book is too big and heavy to carry with you during many of the outdoor activities where you might need it. It is ideal for a survivalist homesteader or other remote but relatively stationary situation, or even as part of a vehicle kit. It includes medications and dosages used to treat various maladies, and would prove an invaluable reference for anyone in an emergency situation away from traditional medical services. It is also a useful tool in creating an emergency medical kit targetted at specific activitied and situations, giving detailed information on the items needed for each type of emergency. Training is key, and no book will ever replace professional emergency medical personnel, but this book uses layman's language to describe medical emergencies and their treatments and can assist you when the professionals are not available.

As a Wilderness EMT and wilderness medicine instructor, I often find myself asking myself questions or being asked questions that I wouldhave otherwise never conjured up. Needless to say, I wouldn't carry this "bible of the backcountry" with me everywhere I go while out enjoying mother nature's splendor, but it certainly has its own spot in my emergency medicine library collection! Well written, easy to follow and understand, and the graphics are clear and concise. A great resource for any Wilderness First Aider, WFR or even WEMT!

VERY dissapointing! The first think I looked up was how to deal with a posionous spider bite. The book recommends ice, pain killers and getting the person to a medical facility. How about a suction extractor and a poultice made of mud, charcoal, clay or grated potatoe to pull the venom out to keep it from surging through the system??? Emergency after emergency is dealt with by stablizing and getting the person to a medical facility. I got this book hoping to learn how to deal with things where medical facilities may not be available.

Is this the best there is? I can't believe it got 5 stars!!!! Can anyone tell me where to get a REAL book on how to deal with medical emergencies! What a waste of money!

I bought this because it had great reviews and was touted as the best to have in outdoor medicine. Personally, I was kind of hoping for more of a "this is what you do if you are out here with no help and best ways to treat different possible injuries" kind of book. I was not looking for a "give some of the huge quantity of antibiotics you brought with you, use some of the extensive medical equipment you brought, and medivac immediately" kind of book. If I wanted something like that, at least it could have a list in the back of all equipment and medications used in this book and how to carry that much into the woods/mountains etc. A good first aid guide contains the same info without the medications. Feel like I wasted my money on this.

Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital, and Hospice

Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital, and HospiceAfter reading Reiki Energy Medicine, this reader finds writing this review quite difficult. It is quite tempting to lose any measure of objective distance and launch into the most effusive praise of this delightful book. At 120 pages, including notes and index, this book manages to say in a straightforward, concise, and simple way what so many other books three times the length or more are unable to communicate.

Without wasting too much time, the authors define and delineate with ease the nature of that universal healing life force that we know as reiki and its efficacy as a complement to traditional allopathic medicine. They neatly outline protocols that they, themselves, have used to integrate reiki into various health care environments from the emergency room to the hospital to the hospice. They discuss the success of programs they have developed and taught to other health care professionals, who have then enthusiastically integrated reiki healing into their health care practices. Reiki, as seen by the authors, is a cost-effective means of providing additional care and support to patients encountering what has so often been the impersonal and technical face of modern medicine. It re-integrates compassion and care back into the caregiver-patient/recipient relationship. Much anecdotal evidence is supplied in this book to demonstrate the extent to which this return of the compassionate relationship alone can drastically reduce the cost and length of recovery.

In the hospice setting where recovery is not an option, Reiki can transform what, under modern conditions, has become a degrading or frightening decline to death into a healing transition. Besides its utility as a palliative measure to treat even the worst pain, Reiki is a gentle guide to ease the patient's concerns and to assist them in their journey out of this life. Remarkably, reiki has also proven quite healing in the relationships of the hospice client with their survivors. In a word, Reiki can assist in cleaning out so much of the emotional unfinished "business" of the client. The authors supply anecdotes supporting this concept and discuss protocols as to how to apply and integrate reiki in the hospice setting.

I am reminded of an article, "Reiki in Hospice Care: Miranda's Story," by John Mramor(Massage & BodyWork Magazine, Feb/Mar 2004 issue) that eloquently affirms the principles that Ms. Barnett and Ms. Chambers have discussed. The client, Miranda, was a single mother of two in her early forties dying from cancer. After a traumatic and highly dysfunctional life, it didn't appear that she would find any healing, peace, or resolution as she approached the end of her life. Nonetheless, through the persistent yet ever so gentle efforts of Mr. Mramor, Miranda was able to find not only some measure of relief from her severe pain, but also to find the healing and resolution of life issues to continue her journey from this life to the next. I feel blessed by the serendipity to have read this article at the same time I was reading Reiki Energy Medicine.

Equally important to discussing the use of reiki in the modern healthcare facility was the emphasis placed by the authors upon the need for caregivers to take care of themselves. The importance of self-Reiki can not be repeated too often. Self-Reiki is vital to maintaining the energy and health of caregivers and to reducing their burdens of dis-ease and stress. As in their discussion regarding hospital and hospice protocols, the authors outline at length the importance of self-care for caregivers and conclude with their vision of a healthcare facility where reiki is fully integrated into the course of healing modalities for both the caregivers and the care-recipients.

In conclusion, Reiki Energy Medicine is quite simply a must-have text for reiki professionals, especially those who are integrating its caring principles and healing practices with other health modalities. I would also highly recommend it for reiki practitioners in general for its value in bringing home the profound, yet gentle realization that reiki can be integrated into every aspect of life to detoxify, heal, and raise the energy of any person and any situation.

It worked well with any level of Reiki or experience that one has with this system. I found the book to be clear and since it was not "airy fairly" I could tell my "main stream" students to buy it without fear that they would be scared away. This is more a beginners guide to Reiki in the Medical Profession than anything else. Many of the ideas of where Reiki is from are outdated. Though for the most part the information is based on the Reiki tradition.

I was disappointed by the lack of in-depth techniques and information on HOW to apply Reiki in these situations. This is a "What is Reiki" and "How Reiki can benefit your profession" book. A beginners information guide again. Good for it's purpose.

The one thing I was upset by was the complete lack of discussion on the Ethics in Reiki. Even going so far as to tell people to do Reiki on people before asking permission. To me, a Reiki/Seichim Teacher the Ethics are some of the most important information to pass on.

As an RN, and a CRNA, I found this text especially appealing. Good explanations of just what reiki is about are extremely helpful. As I have just recieved my reiki 1 attunements, I found many of the suggestions very helpful to my practice of anesthesia, and reiki! Thanks and well done!

Shot: Staying Alive with Diabetes

Shot: Staying Alive with DiabetesAs a general population we are becoming increasingly familiar with type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, however, remains something of a mystery, and it's often conceived as a "just" a chronic condition that means a patient might have to take insulin sometimes and watch what he or she eats -i.e., not that "big of a deal."

This book proves quite clearly what a misconception that is. Ms. Ryan's story illustrates just how serious Type 1 diabetes is, with potentially life-threatening, and often unpredictably-timed, consequences. But setting the medical info aside, to me, the greater benefit of the book is to show the extent to which the disease pervades a patient's daily life -how exhausting it would be, mentally and physically, to have to prick your finger and check your glucose level 10-15 times per day, and then to have to inject yourself with the right amount of insulin at each time; how day in and day out it never changes. Fifteen years after diagnosis, the patient is not only "shot" with medication, but mentally "shot" too. It was, for me at least, a real eye-opener about life with a chronic condition.

The book is not at all negative or depressing, though. By contrast, Ms. Ryan tells her story with good humor and even joy (at times!). She's not embarassed to share the good or the bad and puts a very human face on the disease. One of my favorite parts of the book is when she discusses her decision to convert to an insulin pump, and shares her very real (but something I wouldn't have thought of) concerns about how it could affect intimacy in her marriage! Her experiences with pregnancy were also eye-opening for someone whose only experience with a diabetic pregnancy is "Steel Magnolias" and a gestational diabetes glucose test.

I found the story compelling and a quick, but highly informative read. You should read the book just because it's funny and interesting -but it would be especially great for someone with T1D (even newly diagnosed), or family members of those with T1D or another chronic condition.

Amy Ryan's book is a must read for anyone who has diabetes, has a family member or friend with the disease or just wants to know about what it is like to live with it. She describes her experience in an engaging way and paints the daily picture of what millions of Americans are experiencing every day. If you read her story, you'll know that you are not alone. A terrific read that is well written and engaging.

Amy Ryan has written a book about the ongoing challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes. It is not a how-to book. It is not a list of resources. It is a story from the heart of a woman who has been given a life sentence with a chronic disease. Her fears, trials, missteps, setbacks and triumphs are laid out in a well told tale of truly frightening proportions. She was an adult when her diabetes was discovered, and it nearly destroyed her with its many turnings and complications. I can only imagine the horror such a diagnosis would hold for parents of a young child, the normal victims of this disease. She has bravely chronicled her years in a manner that is easily accessible even to those who have only a passing acquaintance with this killer.

Brava, Amy!

The book is titled "Shot" but it starts with a punch in the stomach.

The author finds out one day that she has to stick needles into

herself everyday for the rest of her life or she could die.

This is a fast paced account of being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes

and learning to live with the relentless demands of a chronic disease.

The book expertly balances nerve racking human drama with

information that should be invaluable to anybody suffering from

diabetes or any chronic disease for that matter. Written in

a narrative style, the book takes the reader along for a ride from

the first days of total fear and confusion to today's era of hope

found in emerging technologies and treatments. I enjoyed the book

very much.

I really enjoyed this book. Amy took each and every experience that an adult diagnosed with type I diabetes ha,s and got them down on paper in a way that tells a story that is good, true & interesting.

Reading the book encouraged me so much. I've struggled with t1d for 10 years now, and have been in the burnout phase at this point, for sure. While reading this, I remembered that there was a time when I had GREAT control over the illness, and that I know I can get there again. I endured 3 pregnancies with it, and she described the anxiety involved with that to a T!

There were some places she didn't go, that get pretty dark with this illness like the fact that many women diagnosed discover that not only is life a bit easier (in the present moment) when you run high, but you also can eat essentially whatever you want and get *thinner*. This is an aspect of t1d that I struggle with and occasionally feel hopeless to overcome. I hoped she might venture there, but perhaps she will write a sequel.

Almost Fat Free Down-Home Cooking

Almost Fat Free Down-Home CookingOne of the best cookbooks on the market. Each recipe give a breakdown of calories per serving along with the percentage of fats, carbs, fiber, etc. Outstanding!

I purchased this book because I LOVE to cook and am always looking for lowfat ways to prepare the foods I ate growing up that had WAY too much fat for me now. I have been VERY disappointed with it. In the past 3 weeks, I have tried 6 recipes so far. It was not ANYTHING like I had hoped for, and I even threw a few away because they tasted awful! I will keep trying a few more but so far am very dissatisfied with this book!

Surviving Natural Disasters and Man-Made Disasters

Surviving Natural Disasters and Man-Made DisastersOn receiving this book after it was posted on Amazon. I sat in my recliner and read this complete book in less that 20 hours. The book is very well written as the words just flow. The desire to know the information as quickly as possible was bubbling inside of this past victim . I was thrilled to see the documentation for additional information such as the info on ham radio classes and where and how to obtain info on buying your own hand held unit and how to apply for your license. Plus over 100 other sites to get us organized from the American Red Cross to Homeland Security. The many classes that these ladies not only wrote about but sat through themselves in order to pass this information along

to us.

They have done their homework and it shows. The many forms on how to organize your family or business and get your information ready to travel if the need should arise.

This is very important preliminary work... if one waits until the storm strikes or the earth shakes it is to late to think of getting organized... remembering the telephone numbers that you can not recall while you stand there shaking with fear.... Been there and done that....

Good luck.

Essential reading for being prepared for what might come. No one wants to have to think a disaster is headed their way but wouldn't it be better to be prepared. This book is exactly what is needed to have a plan for yourself and loved ones. Style Eyes

Style Eyesthis is a fun yet slightly predictable book. It starts off with the basics of eyes, the tools, eye shapes, false lashes etc. It is fairly repetitive of other makeup books in that respect but Chang keeps it quick and to the point, I like that. She then goes into the fun stuff, she does more than just your basic smokey eye look and your daytime work look. She uses bright and vibrant colors, i believe there is a look with some rhinestones on it, and some fun lip looks. As for step by step looks, she only has 2, and they are how to acheive the smokey look. The other eye looks in the book simply give you the color she uses and a tool to apply it. So for beginners looking on a how to, this might not be a really helpful books, but for those who have the basics of makeup technique down, replicating the looks is easy to do. Througout the book, she has a variety of eye shapes but not a variety of skin tones. Overall it isn't a bad book to have in the collection, I can see myself looking at it for a nice quick and easy look if i'm in a makeup rut.

I got this book as a gift and plan to buy 3 more for all my makeup junkie friends! I'm a busy mom of 2 beautiful and super active boys who never gave up her love of makeup. I don't have time to go to the Mac counter to learn how to do a smokey eye and now I don't have to. Chang-Babaian lays it all out for you. She also states that you don't have to throw out your shimmery eyeshadow just because you're 35 plus. As a Latina, I like the fact that women of all ethnicities are included. The women look real and beautiful instead of model-types. I know this is a book I will return to again and again.

I really liked this book when I got it, and then I realized why I liked it. I already own it. Actually -twice. This book is essentially parts of Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces" and "Face/Forward" but with no acknowledgment for inspiration. Everything from the fonts, to the photography, to the names of the looks is all Aucoin. I'm not saying the author did this on purpose, but I bet that she is familiar with these beauty tomes which unwittingly guided her when she started to design her own book.

It's too badbecause the book is filled with great tips and easy-to-follow instructions. However, Aucoin died a decade ago, so he doesn't have a voice in this. I feel that it's only fair to acknowledge his work.

This book is a pretty big disappointment. I was expecting lots and lots of ideas on different ways on how to wear eye make up with different colors and different types of eye shadows matt, shimmers, and glitters. But, sadly there are just a few and they are not special at all. The only real step-by-step that includes several photo's for each step is the part on smokey eyes. That's it. I'm really shocked why so many people rate this book so high.
