Real Fitness for Real Women: A Unique Workout Program for the Plus-Size Woman

What I liked about the book, is that it focuses on six weeks -which is easy enough to make a commitment to. And she starts you off slowly, building new things into it each week.
The pictures -using REAL women -are easy to understand and the stretches feel great.
I also learned a lot about how fatter bodies need specific exercises and she really explains them. I have been doing the program for about 3 weeks now and so far so good!
I recommend this to other plus size gals like myself who are fed up with the fitness is only for skinny people.I was so excited to find this exercise book, especially after reading the back cover. The author has a master's degree in plus-size exercise! The book opens with an M.D.'s intro asking the reader what is so different about this program. But she then lists the medical and psychological benefits of any fitness or exercise plan. The doctor continues calling this program "groundbreaking," "innovative" and research-designed. Next comes the prologue, an over-the-top testamonial for "the amazing, revolutionary program." For me, here is where the book falters. Right from the start. It smacks of a late-night info-mercial--too eager to sell.
I looked for the research as promised and found it scant. In Chapter 5, the research citations were 15 years old. As a large-woman, I read words and terms I've seen used all too often--in dieting sales pitches. There is nothing groundbreaking or amazing here. The groundbreakers were Pat Lyons who began the first fitness program for large women and others before her, as mentioned in the author's acknowledgments. Today, though still growing and far too few, exercise for women of size is taking place in many cities throughout the USA and Canada.
Follow-up studies for the specific functional assessments that are mentioned would be helpful. As large-sized consumers, we've been told to disregard anecdotes and testamonials for diet pitches and to demand solid research, if any. We should expect no less when being "sold" fitness.
On more positive notes, the use of affirmations and supports are a plus in the chapters on Getting Motivated and Creating Support. The author provides some skillfull means of tapping into the personal power of daily affirmations. In the Getting Started chapter, the brief discussions of foot and skin care, along with large-size clothing options are also welcome additions.
As for the exercises, the p. 46 aerobic mix is plainly difficult to read through, and I suspect few will actually be able to execute the movements, let alone at an aerobic pace. Some of the featured exercises are more clear and simplistic than others. Though listed as (optional,) the mats may be an essential item for the comfort of many plus-sized women.
The final chapter is Food for Thought, containing plenty of information, but taking on a different tone. There are good suggestions here, but not any lofty promise-everything claims as earlier in the book (for example, see p.7, "I can. My program.... Be assured that my program is different from the rest.") The chapter definitely does not sell any diet. The author mentions having consulted with a plus-sized dietician, and the emphasis here is on satisfying the body's food cues.
The book ends with Stories of Inspiration including "Kathleen's" profile providing her story of weight loss contrary to the book's de-emphasis on weight loss throughout.
Despite its hard sales pitch, this book does not offer a "groundbreaking, revolutionary, amazing" program. Even if you couple your best intentions with that of the author and her featured anecdotal players, you may very well take this one home --and shelve it.

These exercises and stretches are so gentle, and yet they have such an amazing effect. I have more energy, greater range of motion, and more bounce than before. I'm much more eager for my regular walks than I used to be. I'd love it if Rochelle shared more information on how the body mechanics of large women are unique, but it's clear from the effects of the exercises that she's done her homework and that her plan works. I have a long history of problems with my neck and shoulders, and the upper-body stretches are especially helpful at getting my muscles to settle down and loosen up. I've been struggling with my exercise program on my own for a long time, and although the exercises in Rochelle's book seem very simple, they have had a profound effect on my sense of physical well-being. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this program to any large woman. The proof is in the execution. You won't know what a great program this is until you've worked at it for a couple of weeks and felt the result. And you won't have to hurt yourself to do it. The exercises are gentle, easy to do, and adjustable depending on your needs and limitations. When I first saw Ms. Rice on CBS This Morning I was struck by her enthusiasm for plus sized fitness. I was also a little skeptical about a thin woman being able to recognize the fitness needs of larger women. Boy, was I wrong.I could not put this book down. Not only did I find the direction of the book easy to absorb and follow. I also found the accompanying photographs, which showed plus size women in various exercises, very beneficial. In addition the the motivational stories of the women who have followed Ms. Rice's program were very inspirational.
I recommend this book to any woman of size, and even those not of size, who think they can't live an active lifestyle. You can! And Ms. Rice shows you how.

The book takes a while before getting started, with The Program beginning when the book is nearly one-third over. The set-up of weekly themes, goals, and exercises barely "works" on paper, but is definitely too difficult to "work out" in practice. As a result, this book will be a quick "skimmer" for most women. A lot of promises are made, saying that this routine is not sensationalized or a quick fix. Well, I was not looking for a quick fix, but the exercises could use some pizzazz! The photos don't stir me to move, and the author's saccharine style is a turn-off. Though insisting on the uniqueness of Real Fitness for Real Women, the movements seem ordinary. There is some, but not much that a certified trainer couldn't offer, and hasn't offered me in my first two sessions. The writing style often speaks to plus-size women as if we should exclude ourselves from our local gyms, and many plus-sizers, myself included, do not necessarily agree. The resources listed in the end might be more useful if they included samplings of similar "unique" workouts: SistersnShape, KellyBliss, MoretoLove, etc. There is movement happening, and there is a Movement happening. To better serve plus-size fitness, the author might include a chapter focusing on what her program's ideals have in common with other programs and practices (in neighboring states.) Overall, this title could use some re-working. Just as some plus-size women are new to exercise, perhaps the founder of this workout may be a novice writer and author.Men's Health Best: Weight-Free Workout

Since the end of January, I've lost 25 lbs and went from doing five of most exercises to doing twenty, with most push-up variations with my feet elevated to lift more of my own weight. I've also thrown in some pull-ups by tossing a towel over a sturdy door, and pistol squats. The few diet tips -eat protein right after working out, essentially -are also handy. My strength and stamina have increased, I look better, and had to buy new clothing for the summer as the old stuff was just falling off me.
This won't turn you into the fellow on the cover, of course, but if you're like me and just won't go to the gym (too far away, too expensive), all you need is a patch of floor and you're good to go, and least if you've not exercised much before, or have had an injury (as I did).
I also recommend buying a jump rope and getting in some cardio that way. This little book packs a lot of value into a few pages. What I like best about this book is it cuts out the fluff. It is brief and to the point on it's coverage of general nutrition and bodyweight training aspects. Most importantly, it contains a variety of workouts ranging from; full body circuits, back care, balance and abdominal routines. Selections are short, sweet and well organized.
Highlights:
Two, 22 minute full body, bodyweight circuits (great for those days when you want to focus on active recovery and give your body a rest from your regular heavy lifting)
One, 15 minute high intensity workout (Good for when you are crunched on time)
A Valuable 7 minute "save your back routine" (Doing this will relieve the pain in your back, after a day of sitting at your desk.)
Good verity of well illustrated stretches
Solid, basic selection of well illustrated bodyweight exercises
The total content of this book is under a 100 pages, but it manages to provide great photos and a good verity of workouts. This book is a great little handbook for those who are looking to venture down the path of bodyweight exercises. Another plus is this book is small enough to take with you as a reminder to squeeze in a workout.

This appeared to be a bunch of magazine articles cut and paste into a short book. There was no reasoning, progression, or consistency to their plan. It did contain a variety of exercises though but no plan. I think You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises for Men and Women is a much better alternative.Want Men's Health Best: Weight-Free Workout Discount?
I bought this for my brother. He has been using the book for almost 3 weeks now. He is so happy and excited with this book and the guidance it provides. I can hear his confidence coming back from the way he sounds when we talk on the phone. I bought this so he would not have any excuses to exercise during the week. Seems to be working!Okay, I hadn't seen my brother since he began using this book until a week ago. I am so proud of him. He lost 10 lbs and dropped from a 4x to a 2x. He gives this book all of the credit!
Natural Cures for Diabetes: Reverse Diabetes Quickly Through the Power of Natural Cures

Anyone who says that Dr. Ingrams products are not working for them then they must be doing something wrong.
I had a serious toe nail infection went to a drug store and the druggist said i would need a doctors note to get a product called lamisil a drug that she said would destroy my liver if i were to use it. She then whispered to me to go to a health food store and see what they have. I did and now no toenail fungus. Using the oil of oregano and oragamax.
It works and works well. This is the best book I've read on natural diabetes cures so far! What appeals to me the most is that the author doesn't hold back. He states that all diabetes patients regardless of whether they suffer from type 1 or 2 diabetes have a good possibility of being cured by following the precepts in this book.
The first chapters are devoted to impressing upon us the absolutely poisonous nature of sugar. And rightly so.
We are informed that the cause of diabetes is not just faulty insulin secretion by the pancreas nor "diabetic genes". Insulin cannot cure diabetes, on the contrary it damages liver cell function. The cause of diabetes is our atrocious high-sugar diet leading to dysfunction of the liver and all the digestive organs. Fungal infection is also involved.
The cure lies in the adoption of an optimal sugar-free diet rich in nutrients and free too of all processed foods. A programme containing specifically named nutritional products based on wild oregano, red sour grape, etc is suggested.
The intestines should be cleansed with wild herbs and spices and other natural products and supplements. Oregulin, cumin, cinnamon, chromium, essential fatty acids and B-vitamins are among the nutrients/supplements mentioned. Basically, no fruit is permitted in the diet, as fruit largely consists of sugar.
I especially appreciated the chapters mentioning common vegetables and herbs of essential importance for diabetics, and gained much information new to me.
Protocols are prescribed for those suffering from diabetes in varying degrees of severity. These protocols, when followed, "reverse diabetic pathology and normalize blood sugar".
This is an invaluable, life-saving book for all those suffering from both types of the disease, and as I stated previously it is the absolute best I have come across.

I probably have purchased over 20 books on diabetes looking for "a cure" while thinking I could continue my current way of eating. I met Dr Cass about 20 years ago and when I heard of his new diabetes book I couldn't get to the book store fast enough to buy it. You will read what you don't want to hear, if you have diabetes you will have to give up sugar to get well. This is not what you will hear from your western medicine doctor, they will tell you that yes you can have sugar in moderation, NOT TRUE! Diabetes is a sugar handling problem that has occured in the body and you can't keep slamming it with continued eating of pies, cakes, candy and soda pop! Dr Cass gives a very detailed account of how sugar effects the body and what a poison it really is. He also goes in to detail how the adrenal glands and liver have a huge role in managing blood sugar which is nothing something you normally read in books about this disease. He gives very detailed and clear and easy to follow instructions on what to eat and what natural food supplements will help you heal. Dr Cass is way ahead of his time and I hope you buy the book and get well!I liked everything that Dr Ingram said. If everyone would take his advicethere wouldnt be as much typeII diabetes.I had to force myself to finish reading this book. It is beyond a doubt the most poorly written and frustrating "reads" I've come across in a long time. Bad punctuation, and the repeated use of "the fact is", "in fact", "that is", and "thus" was as distracting as listening to Paris Hilton or some valley girl with the constant "like" and " uhm", etc. You're so busy noticing these idiosyncracies, the content is hard to follow. Plus, it seemed geared only toward his cure, not a variety of natural option, of which there are many.I felt that from page one the tone was almost angry. If you're presenting facts, (not that I'm doubting his) the facts should make their own argument. When presented in the tone I interpreted it seemed defensive, rather then informed. Ever had a friend vent at you over some problem? That's what reading this book felt like. By the time I finished it (in one sitting) I felt like someone had chewed my ear off. While content was interesting (when not distracted by everything else) I honestly wish I hadn't wasted my money on this particular book.

One additional observation: rather than testing your kid with the R.A.T., try encouraging him to read the daily newspaper, Newsweek or Time Magazine, and make sure he socializes in groups that include adults, all throughout the growing up process. Bring him along when you go to the hardware store, change the oil, or replace a fuse. Insist he call the boss to say he's sick and can't come to work; have him sew on the button that fell off his shirt; and have him cook a meal for the family once in awhile. Prepare for what lies ahead when she leaves your home, and do it over the span of many years. Don't wait till they are young adults to test their abilities as stated in this book. The book can serve a useful purpose, to be consulted for the occasional quandry that arises like how to get grease spots out of a shirt, or the correct way to kiss someone when meeting formally. I bet it would be a great conversation-starter afer the family meal or when entertaining, and "testing" each other would be a great party game. Making it fun might just be the answer to making the book palatable to the masses.

It's a great book for preparing teens for moving out of the house. Wish I would have had something like this!
