Ayurvedic Beauty Care: Ageless Techniques to Invoke Natural Beauty

Ayurvedic Beauty Care: Ageless Techniques to Invoke Natural BeautyAn amazing, wonderful book, one of the most informative I have ever read on beauty care or ayurveda, it's packed full of information from cover to cover. Very extensive, talks about all the different aspects of health and beauty care. Lots and lots of recipes to make at home and which do work. Never again will I need to throw away good money on useless, expensive face creams that don't do the job and put me at risk for cancer. Only drawback, perhaps, is that some of the recipes have too many ingredients for modest pocketbooks. Otherwise a great buy and a great book, if you don't like creepy, strange-sounding unreliable chemicals in the products you put on your skin or in your hair, this is the book for you. It's better than just a simple make-your-own-cosmetics type of book because the recipes are tailored precisely to YOUR particular skin type.

I found this book in one of the South India's bookstores. It got my attention because of the cover an ancient drawing depicted the woman's beauty from the times long gone.

When I read a few of the pages whilst deciding to buy the book or not, I was surprised by the straightforwardness and usefulness of the information about beauty, so I bought the book. And I wasn't disappointed for doing so.

The book is a bit thick my edition has 281 pages. However it's very easy to read, you may not even notice how you will get to the very end of it.

This book may be slightly more suitable for women, but it would also suit those men who want to look after their skin, hair and health in general, in a natural way.

Ayurvedic Beauty Care book focuses a lot on the skin and hair betterment, but it also mentions quite extensively how to fully cleanse your internal body and nourish it naturally.

What dosha type are you?

The first part of the book deals with three doshas. A dosha, as the author explains, is a life-giving force. There are three doshas in total, each one having different quality. For examle, Kapha can be described as wet; Vata as wind or breath; Pitta as heat or energy.

Each person has one particular dosha dominating, but sometimes it happens that all three doshas are of completely equal amount in one person.

In this section there is a comprehensive test to assess which is your dominant dosha, and then the author gives advice about the best natural ingredients to use for various beauty regimes for each of the three doshas.

Bringing these three doshas in balance within a person, as well as other elements such as agni (transformative power responsible for digestion and similar processes), is the fundamental principle of Ayurveda, as the author herself points out.

Daily routines for enhancing beauty

After listing some initial information necessary to understand in order to grasp what Ayurveda is about, the author goes on to teach some daily routines to enhance the beauty.

In Ayurveda the perfect functioning of the body consists of good digestion and assimilation of the food together with a regular and efficient waste evacuation. If these processes work well, then the beauty and radiance comes naturally. Therefore ayurvedic cleansing processes focus a great deal on perfecting these workings of the body.

Ayurvedic Beauty Care book mentions some good advice about how to help digestion as well as how to select your food wisely. It also has a section about how to eat according to your dosha and even suggests a sample menu for a day.

How to balance your agni

The concept of agni is unique to ayurveda. The author describes agni as simply being the digestive fire. And that not only applies to the process of food digestion, but also the digestion of your thoughts, emotions, feelings and information.

Agni cleans our toxins and keeps the digestive tract clean. This brings radiance to the outer body. When agni is not balanced, it may be too active or too slow. The signs that your agni is slow are these:

* Gas

* Burping

* Slow digestion

* Tired mind

* Difficulty walking

* Scanty or no perspiration

* Constipation

* Dull complexion

The author in this section provides many effective tips about how to balance both low and too active agni.

Vitamins and minerals

In this section of the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book Melanie Sachs lists vitamins and minerals, the signs of their deficiency and in which foods particular vitamins and minerals can be found. Straight after this chapter she also discusses fasting when it's good to fast and when it's not recommended.

Beauty and work

All aspects of your life contribute to your beauty or the lack of it. And because employment is a significant part of most people's lives, it's important to choose your job wisely. Here the author suggests how to select the work that suits your inner self. She notes that for each type of person there exists work that is natural and satisfying.

Each dosha has a certain inclination towards a particular career. However it's also possible to choose work which is not your type, but then re-balance your energy by doing an additional activity which agrees with your dosha.

Massage

Everyone needs to receive massage regularly, especially the Vata-type people. Massage nourishes and relaxes the body. Different types of people (Pitta, Vata and Kapha types) need to get massages in different ways to get most benefits. Also different massage oils should be used for different dosha types. The author in this book lists the practices and the oils that should be used for each type of dosha.

Some advice on bath, meditation and sleep is also given in the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book. An especially good chapter is on herbal baths; for example, an author gives a good herbal bath recipe for sound sleep.

Colors, aromas, gems and sounds

Melanie Sachs acknowledges that everything in this world is energy, and that colors, aromas, gems and sounds have certain energetic qualities that could better or harm us. Thus we can use certain qualities of these mentioned objects to increase our health and enhance our beauty.

She goes on to explain how essential oils, colors and sounds can significantly improve our bodies and minds. Melanie especially focuses on essential oils, noting how many great benefits a person could get from using them.

She lists the oils for each dosha type and she even provides an essential oil chart. I found this chart extremely useful, because it has checkmarks on the qualities of each essential oil.

For example if I look at the essential lemon oil row, I see these qualities checked:

"Oily, mature, acne, inflamed, itchy, wrinkles, congested, tired/flabby, varicose/thread veins (skin conditions), antiseptic, astringent, antibiotic, relaxing, dandruff, nail care (oil uses and qualities)."

So such chart is of great use to me. When I find out about a particular essential oil, I find it in the chart and check if it would suit my skin.

Special care of the regions of the body

In this chapter the author lists specific beauty treatments for nails, feet, hair, hands and so on. I found the hair treatment section a very useful one. The author here suggests completely natural shampoo recipes (dry and wet shampoo recipes) as well as the causes for common hair problems and their effective treatments.

Ayurvedic skin care

Skin has different qualities and experiences different problems under the influence of each dosha. Therefore each dosha type should look after their skin in a different way. However no matter which dosha you represent, the full ayurvedic facial treatment consists of eight steps:

1. Cleansing

2. Oleation massage

3. Herbal steam or compress

4. Gentle scrub

5. Cleansing or nutrifying mask or facial pack

6. Toning/rejuvenating

7. Moisturizing

8. Hydrating

Each of these steps are thoroughly described in the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book, together with natural recipes for each treatment. For example, for initial cleansing, the author suggests a few herbal cleansing powder recipes for different types of skin (normal, dry, oily or blemished and mature).

Further on the author mentions a specific massage technique for the face, together with specific oils you should select according to your skin condition. She also mentions various natural scrubs, face packs, toners, moisturizers and mists to improve the quality of your skin.

As for make up, the author doesn't give much attention to it. She claims that if you follow the advice she gave in the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book, your natural beauty will increase to the extent that you will use little to no make up. The most important thing is to improve your natural beauty, so that you would need less "cover ups".

Rejuvenation therapy

Purva karma and pancha karma are very important ayurvedic cleansing treatments. The goal of these treatments is to remove all the impurities of the body, so that the body would be gotten rid of the illnesses it had or were about to manifest. Also, when the body is completely clean inside and outside, it can get the full benefit from nourishing.

The nourishing treatments are also described in detail. Different types of oils and herbal supplements are listed in this chapter.

Another massage section

The Ayurvedic Beauty Care book offers various massage techniques for different parts of the body, together with the relevant oils. There are pictures and clear drawings provided to make it easy for you to do your own massage, or massage someone else in an effective way.

Unusual treatments

In the final chapter of the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book some unusual treatments are described. They are unusual in the West, but these treatments are widely known in the East.

For example in Netra Basti treatment, a warmed butter is poured over an open eye. This is claimed to improve the eyesight and the general condition of the eyes (e.g. it makes the eyes brighter).

Another interesting treatment is called "Shiro Dhara", which is running a stream of warm sesame oil onto the third eye area. This is supposed to affect certain brain centers to give you a feeling of pleasure and relaxation. It removes pain and stress particularly in the neck and head areas.

There are other interesting treatments described in this last section.

My opinion about the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book

I should admit that I loved the book. Rarely do I keep the books for reference, but this book is still with me because of the essential oils chart, great natural shampoo recipes as well as the tips for facial care.

I recommend the Ayurvedic Beauty Care book for anyone who wants to improve their inner and outer beauty. It's written in an easy to understand manner and many tips in the book are extremely effective.

The Day My Brain Exploded: A True Story

The Day My Brain Exploded: A True StoryEveryone has bad days, but back in 2000, Ashok Rajamani, a young man just coming into his own in the world, had a really bad day. Just before his brother's wedding, he suffered from a brain aneurysm caused by an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). The circulatory knot of arteries and veins, a congenital malformation, had ruptured; the literal ticking time bomb had gone off in spectacular fashion. The good news was that Ashok survived; the bad news was that the person that he had been had died. His account tells of his physical and mental struggles and how he came to an uneasy peace with the realization that he was now Ashok 2.0, a person who suffered from an odd form of blindness, epileptic seizures and visual hallucinations. Written in a conversational tone replete with healthy doses of gallows humor, especially when touching on doctors, and their advice or lack of it, his story is more than just an accounting of a recovery from a serious medical issue. He also examines what makes an individual unique through looking at his relationships and his experiences growing up as an South Indian American in the USA.

I received this book as part of Library Thing's Early Reviewer program.

From the second I started reading the first page, the author fully captivated my attention and I could not put the book down. Although the author's narration went from the present, past, and the future, the story was seamless and maintained total continuity throughout the book. The author had less than 1% chance of survival yet by God's grace he did survive to pen this remarkable memoir.

I was really touched by the story narrated by the author on page 243 where he encountered a boy who also had a brain surgery due to AVM . His mother told Ashok (Author) that, "The surgery made him paralyzed from the waist down. And he's been left completely retarded. But everyday I thank God that he survived...." Finally she said My baby is alive, alive, alive." His comforting words to the mother gave the readers a sense of Ashok's sensibility and the author's hope for every one affected by Brain Hemorrhage.

The best part of the book is the Author's mother's daily heart rendering letters to God and her son. It almost look like with the help of the almighty she singlehandedly brought life to her son.

This book is written extremely well and speaks to the heart of readers like me. I very strongly recommend this book and cannot wait to read his second book!!

I simply cannot put this book down. Ashok leaves himself out there.from the truth of how it happened, to feelings of life afterwards, all emotions. Funny snippets. The truth of life before and after. This is more than a book about a brain injury. LOVE IT!!!!!

You can't help but have an increased awareness of the inner workings of perhaps a tbi peron you pass by in your worldly path. Ashok's humor help to see the sensitivitiy of young man growing through a traumatic change in his life. He also shows how important the support from family and friends are in difficult times. Even in his impaired thinking he realized he must understand enough about his condition to make decision's regarding his treatment No profession, despite the arrogance of the professionals is worthy of blind faith.

The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health: Restore Your Health by Creating pH Balance in Your Diet

The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health: Restore Your Health by Creating pH Balance in Your DietI was diagnosed with chronic fatigue some years ago, and I have been suffering from bad digestive problems, insomnia and various other ailments for a long time.

This book has made a huge difference to my life. I came to it thinking I knew quite a lot about diet and nutrition, but it has opened my eyes. Most importantly, it has made me understand why some "healthy" foods that many nutritionists insist are "really good for you" make me feel unwell.

Of course asparagus, onions and garlic are "really good" for many people, but sadly they're not good for me. I feel unwell when I eat them, and Vasey is the first person who has given me an explanation that feels right: they are sulfurous vegetables, and sulfur being an acid, they can be hard to handle for a system that's become as weak and sensitized to acids as mine.

There were many other revelations. You come across so much conflicting advice, sometimes it's hard to know what to believe. Some people tell you to eat lots of fruit "because they're alkalizing". Others, like Young, tell you not to eat them "because of the sugar". Who do you believe ? Well, neither advice made sense to me because my own experience was different. How could fruit be alkalizing when I felt so unwell after eating most of them ? Yet how could it be because of the sugar since I was doing well on "sugary" bananas ?

Again, it is Vasey who has given me the answers: for some people fruit are alkalizing, for others they are acidifying. It depends on the person. Some people's systems aren't able to metabolize fruit acids, and therefore eating fruit can acidify them even more, but since the banana's acid content is too weak to cause acidification it is usually well tolerated by them. I believe Vasey is right because of personal experience. Tomatoes, too, make me feel unwell, and he confirms that they're very acidic. The list goes on.

In fact, this book has been one long confirmation of my "gut feeling". What a relief to finally find someone who's spelling out what my body has been telling me for years ! I just wish I'd listened to it sooner. Vasey is a godsend, and I believe he really knows what he's talking about.

So I'm puzzled by some of the other reviews here. One reader even claims that Vasey says soy is alkaline. Did we read the same book ? Vasey in fact says soy is a potent acidifier, it only becomes alkalizing if it is sprouted. It is Young who champions soy, not Vasey.

The supplement section in this book is indeed useless. The author is Swiss, and there is a tradition of taking alkalizing powders in continental Europe, where you can find them quite easily in the shops. It's not so easy here. I did try the mail order addresses mentioned, but the products didn't work for me. I even wonder how much Vasey actually had to do with the mail order addresses for the American edition of his book, as he would never have approved of some of the products on offer there. He would never have approved of a product that includes lots of phosphorus, for example, as it's simply too acidic for a sensitive system to cope with. So yes, this section is a weak point. It's not that big a deal, though. We have excellent calcium/magnesium citrate supplements in the shops here, and they do the trick for me.

It's also true that this book doesn't give you detailed eating plans and recipes the way some books do. What it does give you is a lot of invaluable information. Vasey understands that there will never be a "one size fits all" diet that works for everyone. Every'body' is different, and ultimately you have to find out for yourself what works for you. Nobody can do that for you.

Of course not everything in this book will be right for you, I don't eat dairy, for example. But Vasey has given me the information and confidence I needed to work out the right diet for ME.

The most important thing of all: listen to your body !

This book is a great resource when it comes to eliminating acids (and their related adverse health effects) from your body.

Mr. Vasey starts the book with a quick review of the chemistry of acids and alkalines, what the pH does, and how the body reacts to over-acidifcation. His review is not as scientific or as thorough as that of San Whang in his book "Reverse Aging"... but it's sufficient to help you understand the rest of the book.

He then goes through a list of symptoms associated with over-acification so that you can identify if you are suffering from this problem. He does this better than many other authors... I specially like the table he gives about the pH measurements of urine and what they mean. He gives instruction for 6 "acid tests" you can perform at home to help you figure out whether you are suffering from over-acidifcation.

The rest of the book is dedicated to eliminating acidification through diet, supplementation, and non-pharmaceutical remedies.

In the diet section, he doest a good job of suggesting alkaline foods and _meals_ you can take instead of acidic ones. Like most other books, he also gives a nice list of foods and whether they are alkalizing, slightly acidifying, or highly acidifying.

The section on alkaline supplements is not really useful. It's not detailed enough, and he doesn't seem to make any clear recommendations for what kinds or which ones to use.

Finally, the section on drainin acids gives some good tips and techniques for removing acids through the lungs and skin.

What's sorely missing from this book is some practical, step-by-step instructions on what to do tomorrow to become more alkaline. Although he gives some very limited menu suggestions, he doesn't give you any recipes or instructions for recording your progress.

Out of all of the books I've read on this topic, I've only found one home study course that does that...

Overall, if you already have a book with alkaline menus and day-to-day instructions, I would pick up this book or "Reverse Aging". Otherwise, I would pick up the home study course at AcidAlkalineDiet.com and "Reverse Aging" by Sang Whang.

Buy The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health: Restore Your Health by Creating pH Balance in Your Diet Now

Finally, an author who simply does what he says he will do. Vasey does a great job presenting how to balance the pH of your blood gives very practical instructions and then how to analyze the results of all testing. He doesn't seem to have an ulterior motive, like Young, to create vegetarians or raw food groupies. Vasey sticks to one single diet rather than adding an additional 5 10 diet plans as Kliment does in her book.

If you want to learn how to manage your blood's pH, then use this book.

In spite of my best efforts to find any evidence that an acid urinary pH is associated with chronic disease, I cannot. I'm a physiologist and health educator, but I'm definitely not one of those establishment medicine "types" who believes that complimentary modalities are quackery. In fact, I'm a champion of alternative therapies and haven't been to an MD myself in many years. Unfortunately, all I am able to find in defense of the acid/base theory are homeopaths and naturopaths (each of whom I tend to respect in all other areas of their work) making claims of infections and diseases propagating in an acidic cellular environment. But none offer any evidence that there's any connection between urinary pH and cellular pH.

And I have to say, this diet just doesn't make logical sense. The stomach is quite acid, always. Doesn't matter what food you put into it, and that's because of the hydrochloric acid natural to that organ environment and used for digestion. Once in the intestines, pancreatic secretions make all food alkaline...that is, all food.

We couldn't function if the body's cells, plasma or blood were acid. Fall-down maximum exercise may drop the pH down to 7.2 or so (normal blood pH is about 7.4), but a drop even this small overwhelms the blood phosphate buffering system, denatures the enzymes that drive exercise metabolism, and we stop making fuel (we can't live if we're not making fuel). There aren't any cells in the body that can survive in an acidic environment for any time (nevermind over the course of time as chronic disease develops), and any significant shift in pH is immediately restored by the body's buffering systems, and within extremely tight parameters....because to fail to do this can be almost immediately fatal. Just consider diabetic ketoacidosis which can be life threatening within 24 hours and needs immediate hospitalization.

The range of urinary pH can change due to food ash, but to link urinary pH to cellular, blood or plasma pH is a reach.

The tons of anecdotal reporting of restoration of health from this high quality diet has, in my opinion, probably nothing to do with changes in urinary pH, but rather is due to ceasing a previously toxic diet. I request that any proponents or authors of +/diets offer true evidence of cellular acidity. I would be grateful for that evidence.

Want The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health: Restore Your Health by Creating pH Balance in Your Diet Discount?

After reading all the reviews for this book, I decided to contribute because there is one important aspect that has not been mentioned, which has helped me immensely: it is a fine point on the subject of physiological acidity / alkalinity that I have not found in other books on the subject.

The author frequently states that he actually wrote this book for people who have an innate or periodically acquired metabolic deficiency for oxidizing acids (here is the fine point), particularly weak acid foods that for many people, even most people, are alkalinizing in effect. He further explains that for people having this metabolic deficiency, urine PH testing commonly shows false results, i.e., alkaline results when in fact the body's internal state is acid. In this case, urine's alkalinity is not reflective of a healthy system but a loss of needed minerals in an attempt to balance against internal acids.

If you are someone who has tried many "health" foods, such as berries, yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and even many of the current "super foods," as well as popular health protocols such as fruit or lemon (citrus) juice fasts or using apple cider vinegar as a tonic and even as a regular salad dressing, and consequently, felt worse instead of better, you really might benefit from this book, as I did.

Also addressed is the obvious, though not often perceived, fact that an "acid" condition is not merely a physical state but an holistic creation, which can be replaced by application of opposites, not only in diet, but in behavior and lifestyle. Stress, restlessness, hurry, and worry are all "acid" in effect, and though one may strive for a perfectly alkaline food intake, greatest results are attainable through a relaxed (though active) approach to living which may include a discipline of not becoming stressed or obsessive over the relationship of acid to alkaline !

The author is European, hence, some of the foods that he recommends are not common to standard American markets, and his list of supplements for encouraging alkalinity seems excessive (I used just food-grade potassium bicarbonate add cream of tartar and lemon juice if you can tolerate them but the potassium bicarbonate alone worked well for me). Also, many of his assertions as to which foods are acid and which are alkaline bear discrepancies with other sources; however, the author addresses this:

"Based on your own experience ... you may feel that one food or another is better placed in a category different than the one assigned to it here. ... It can in fact be the case that a food has a very acidifying effect on one person, whereas for most people its acidifying effect is weak. You are well advised to trust your own experience rather than to base all your food choices on theory."

Good advice for anything, not just diet !

Living Well in a Nursing Home: Everything You and Your Folks Need to Know

Living Well in a Nursing Home: Everything You and Your Folks Need to Knowi picked up this book because i'm a fan of the author, and boy am i glad i did. while i am not, currently, in the position to be thinking about either of my parents transitioning to an assisted living facility--or to transition myself--this is the type of book that it pays to read *before* you need it. vosen's experience coupled with dickinson's ability to address complex emotional situations is a one-two punch that makes this book a knock-out. not only is everything you could possibly need to know about assisted living covered, but it's done so in a way that is engaging and will make you feel like you've just read a self-help book (and i mean that in a good way!). moreover, while this is intended as a informational book, the real-life "case studies" are so compelling that i found myself reading to the very end to see what happened to this delightful cast of characters. even if you never find yourself in need of the practical information related to long-term care facilities, you'll benefit from the information related to aging, the elderly, family and interpersonal relationships. buy extra copies of this book to send to your siblings and friends.

This is the kind of book everyone with aging parents or other loved ones should read. You never knows when you might find yourself having to make the decision to place a loved one in a long term care facility. Better to know ahead of time what you are getting into so you can plan accordingly. If there is no time to plan, this book can still give you some nuts and bolts advice. Benefit from the writers knowledge, and learn from the characters situation.

Who would have thought a book on Nursing Homes could be so compelling!! Not me. But it is. I love the straight-forward, no nonsense approach to the subject and found the information to be in line with the things I've learned from my own experience in dealing with aging parents and dying loved ones. And, it prepares us for our own aging. It should be read by everyone; there's no need to wait!

I purchased Dickinson and Vosen's "Living Well in a Nursing Home" with an open mind. As a clinical psychologist with geriatric training, I found that this was an excellent book that covered most all of the relevant topics in a professional manner. As a person with an aging parent, and as one who suffers from multiple sclerosis, my mother and I never know which one of us may first be in a nursing home. Having this resource, both of us having read it, along with caregivers, such as my wife, it is an outstanding and fairly comprehensive, yet very readable book. I strongly recommend reading this, probably a bit more geared for users than professionals, but, I think that it's an outstanding resource for both!!!

A very good, elderly friend of mine has suddenly required more care after an injury. A small group of friends are caring for him, and have been dealing with our own emotions towards his care, along with his needs. This book came along at just the right moment. We're still in the decision process of how best to care for our dear friend, and the book is proving to be very helpful. The whole first section is about the decision making process regarding how to care for your loved one. What surprised me is how helpful the book is in dealing with my own emotions in what it means to be put in a nursing home vs being able to stay at home with full time care. The book brings up many important points to consider, is well structured and easy to browse through to find just the right section. I'll continue to use it as a resource, and pass copies along to friends in similar situations with their parents and elderly friends. I highly recommend this book!
