Safe, Secure Baby & Toddler: Effectively Baby Proof your Home and Car for the Safety of You & your C

Safe, Secure Baby & Toddler: Effectively Baby Proof your Home and Car for the Safety of You & your ChildSafe, Secure Baby & Toddler is a very helpful book on safety for new babies and young infants. The book first goes through important things to look out for with your baby, such as their different actions which can allow you to easily recognise how they are developing. It then goes on to explain how to make sure your baby is at its safest and how to keep them constantly protected in all the different situations and areas of your life.

I found this very useful and there were things I would never have thought of 'child-proofing' as they call it. This is definitely worth a read for all new parents, especially new dads like me! Highly recommended!!

Are You Ready!: Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get in Shape, and Change Your Life Forever

Are You Ready!: Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get in Shape, and Change Your Life ForeverFirst off, if you've every seen the show, then you know how Bob talks. This book seemed to ring with his voice on every page. It really does feel like you get a bit of Bob with you when reading this book.

What makes this book different from many other fitness/diet books is Bob deals with the emotional-mental side of things. He tries to get at the root of why we do what we do to ourselves and how to overcome that. For most people where emotions and food share a common thread, this helps you identify that thread and break it!

WHAT'S INSIDE:

Chapter 1 Are you Really Ready? Step One = he deals with your baggage and fears that are keeping you fat

Chapter 2 Accept Where You Are and Forgive: Step Two = You learn to reconnect with your body and forgive yourself for what you've done to it

Chapter 3 Love Yourself: Step Three = Building confidence and setting goals then staying positive

Chapter 4 Change Your Internal Tape Recorder, Change Yourself: Step Four = This is where he deals with emotional eating, mental hunger vs. physical hunger and provides a proactive formula

Chapter 5 It's an Eating Plan, Not a Diet = he explains a bit about foods and their relationship to weight loss. He then provides a great food list and then seven(7) options for a quick breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks

Chapter 6 Your Food Journal = Yes you need to start counting calories. You can photocopy the pages in this chapter to get you going with your own journal.

Chapter 7 Stress Busters = How to deal with dinning/eating out while on your plan; shopping strategies and then staying on course with your eating while in the real world

Chapter 8 Getting Started: Phase One = Introduction to exercise, including why monitor your heart rate. Also levels of exertion defined, basic equipment needed then his words on Cardio workouts

Chapter 9 My Master List = With over 65 exercises described and with most pictures of Bob performing the steps to the exercise. Though black & white, the photos are clear and easy to see what he describes the exercise performing

Chapter 10 The Workout = Three options for a week's worth of working out or you could look at it as 3 weeks of workouts. The options get progressively tougher. As someone like myself who is already fairly fit, Option 1 was too easy but Option 3 was a very good challenge.

OVERALL:

I liked this book, though the workout Bob puts together in the Biggest Loser book that came out first was a lot tougher (5 minutes of walking lunges and 7 minutes of crunches. Ack!).

This is a nice comprehensive book that hits the holistic experience of eating and working out and the challenges we go through starting and continuing a healthy process.

This book is a good addition to anyone's library.

I read this book, cover to cover, in 2 days and really enjoyed it. I think it is the perfect book for anyone who has a lot of weight to lose or for someone who is relatively new to working out. The book has a huge section of strength training exercises, which is great-especially for someone who is new to the weight room or concept of training with weights. I also enjoyed the food lists and recipe ideas.

I'm not sure how helpful this book is to someone who is already accustomed to working out and knows a lot about nutrition, but it a GREAT book for anyone in the beginner, intermediate range. I love how Bob combines mind and soul to make the weight loss a true, life-changing event.

I'm a huge fan of The Biggest Loser. I cry when the contestants lose weight. Bob Harper is a great guy the perfect counterpoint to Jillian Michaels drill sargeant persona. He appears to be kind, gentle, understanding, yet able to influence huge weight losses from the shows participants. I couldn't wait to get this CD and actually get a dose of the whole "Change Your Life" package. The truth is, there's really nothing new here. Bob tells us that we must get our insides together in order to be successful at changing our outsides; that we need to eat healthy foods and exercise at least 5 days a week. He tells us that if we screw up, we don't beat ourselves up. All this is delivered in Bob's charming, encouraging style. There is an enhancement to the CD that allows you to read his food list, sample menus & all of his prescribed exercises (or download the PDF version & print it out). I think that if you ordered the CD you will still want to get the book. There's too much information on supplements, exercise plans and implementation stages. I suspect that the book may have more details. My 4 star rating has nothing to do with what I think of Bob Harper. However, if you've been dieting/exercising for any length of time, you've probably already got this.

I've been watching Bob Harper since he started on The Biggest Loser, and his book is just like he is on TV--positive and upbeat. It's all about fixing what is wrong with you emotionally before attempting to fix what's wrong with your diet. He is all about empowerment and shares personal stories to help solidify the need to balance your Inner Compass.

The nutrition advice is really helpful, and it never seems like he's telling you what to do. Instead, he shares with you and reinforces the fact that you shouldn't give up if you mess up once or twice. He stresses effort, and discipline that comes with personal growth.

This is definitely a book for beginners. This book, coupled with his Biggest Loser workout DVD, will have you well on the right track toward living a better, more healthful life.

Thanks Bob.

Want Are You Ready!: Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get in Shape, and Change Your Life Forever Discount?

I don't know about you, but I start off every year with a fresh batch of diet books and exercise DVDs. And every year by the end of the first week I still haven't tried a single recipe. And the exercise DVDs have been watched and deemed too tough for any human to get through.

This year I wanted to find something that would help me lose weight and keep it off for good. They say if you want to grow as a person get in a new relationship. Every piece of baggage from previous romances shows up.

Well the same thing happens when you decide to change your eating habits. Every piece of your dieting emotional, mental and physical past rears its ugly head and preys on you via your inner fat critic.

Where the majority of diet books ignore the "diet baggage" we all carry, Bob gets you to deal with it BEFORE you jump into a healthy eating and exercise plan. He has trained enough people in his life to know that even the most dedicated dieters at some point will back off when their inner fat critic starts to stalk them.

Bob's book is for those of us who continue to yo-yo diet and cannot figure out why we keep starting over again. He provides a concrete plan for resolving inner sabotage. And while this is not a substitute for serious psychological problems that require professional help, it is a great place to start for those who just need a four step plan to lose weight permanently.

Gentle Birth Choices

Gentle Birth ChoicesReading negative comments of writer who had positive hosp. birth experience in Austin, TX, i wish to point out that Texas has one of the most active midwifery associations in our country they have been instrumental in advancing natural birth practices in Texas. You were fortunate to have the options you shared they are still not the norm for hospital births in much of our country. I live in Virginia Beach, VA, am a nurse, mom and grandmom. Hosp. births here still leave a lot to be desired. Episotomies are standard, induction and c-section rate are very high. When I went to nursing school in the 1980's, I was not taught anything about natural childbirth, I was taught that women needed interventions and taught about the interventions. It wasn't until I became natural childbirth educator that I found out how our bodies really work during birthing and how to work with the body's natural birth capabilities. Many women live in localities where they need to be aware that they have other options than what is traditionally offered in their communitiesthey may have to fight for their right to have the birth of their choice. This book does an excellent job at empowering women to look for healthy birth choicesI look forward to the day when your experience of forward thinking and practices in a hospital setting is the norm, rather than the exception.

because it focuses on the mother-to-be naturally reclaiming the birth process. This book was one of my tried-and-true resources during my pregnancy while I was thoughtfully trying to decide what birth experience I wanted. I ended up making an informed decision to have a midwife-assisted natural homebirth, and it was the most exhilarating experience of my life. There is no other way I would want to bring a child into this world. I challenge any mother-to-be to think for herself, inform herself of all the options, and make the choice SHE (not just her OB/GYN) feels is right. Thank God a medically-controlled hospital birth is not the only option. Blessed are the babies who receive such a warm welcome into the world. And, my heart breaks for every innocent little soul who is yanked from his mother's womb by a pair of cold, latex-gloved hands in a cold, bright, sterilized hospital. Trust me, women...there IS a better way! You have all the resources and strength within you to have exactly the kind of birth you want.

I picked this book up at the urging of my midwife and I am so glad I did. It basically describes my entire birth plan.. it make so much sense to choose to have a birth that is calm and natural instead of the usual hospital nightmare (like my first delivery)

It goes into detail about WHY women are scared of birth and what we can do to combat that. It also gives you reasons why a "conventional" hospital birth is not all it's cracked up to be.

I recommend this book to any friends of mine that are pregnant, I think it's important to be able to make detailed choices regarding the birth of your baby.

Gentle Birth Choices is an excellent book for all expectant parents, regardless of their birthing intentions (i.e. birth center, home birth, hospital birth, natural birth or water birth). Moreover, childbirth educators of any affiliation will benefit from the information covered in the text and on video.

Gentle Birth Choices is riveting, yet powerful. Barbara Harper guides the reader through a history of birth and birthing procedures, dispels the myths perpetuated by the medical establishment and presents alternatives to hospital birth. However, for those who are unable to birth outside of a hospital, Ms. Harper provides guidance so that the reader may obtain the best, "gentle" birth possible. The book benefits expectant parents in that it presents them with options, some of which they may have not previously considered. Moreover, childbirth educators will not only find the book informative for teaching purposes, but also useful for influencing the medical establishment in a tactful manner.

Like the book, the video is an asset for both expectant parents and educators. Whether you have never seen a birth before or have witnessed thousands, the births contained in the video tape are absolutely beautiful and refreshing, relaxing yet empowering. After watching the video you will want to share it with everyone you know!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend both book and video! In fact, I've already gone one further -I purchased it for my cousin who is expecting in April.

This is an excellent book. The pictures are gorgeous, as usual Suzanne Arms has done terrific photography, and the descriptions of childbirth are pretty acurate. I must state though that every woman's experience of childbirth will be her own and be different so just because someone's childbirth was one way as described in this book it does not mean it will happen the same way for you. Technocratic birth is still the norm throughout the country and it is important to read books like this to prepare yourself should you be considering a hospital birth. The writer has obviously had a bad experience in the hospital, but many people have and I admire her wanting to share her experience as a warning to others. In my last hospital birth in 1999 I too was subjected to many of the interventions I did not want, for the third and final time I gave birth in the hospital. Never again. I wish I had read this back in 1995 before I had my first son and maybe things would have been different. Hospitals are for sick people, not pregnant women who are low risk. Also, someone else who reviewed here made some mention of a baby having an umbilical cord wrapped around its neck as a reason for c-sec, but that is not necessarily true. It is a small matter to unwrap a cord from around an infants neck as it is being born...I know as this happened with my son at his birth at home this past spring. If I had been in the hospital...would they have cut me open? Who knows?

My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household

My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative HouseholdThree capable, strong, independent, professiional working women have proven cooperative living is possible and enjoyable if you're willing to co-operate,negotiate,and respect

your house mates. Patience and a good sense of humor help too! What is left out about their personal lives is as significant as the details included. Confident, but not

cocky, and not given to self-promotion or bragging. The information, insights, and questions at the end of the book make it a thorough "how to" guide book.

Anyone in any type of relationship or living arrangement can learn from this story.

If you are planning on sharing a house with friends, this book is one that you will want to read. It certainly helps you in being aware of issues that should be addressed before living together.

Buy My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household Now

This is a complete and detailed look at an example of successful group living, which manages to be both informative and interesting. It is a good mix of personal, but not overly personal, narrative about what led each of the three single women authors to set up their communal household and very practical checklists and suggestions for persons who may consider such an arrangement. I enjoyed reading it out of curiosity about how this could work in practice. The authors are frank in discussing the potential downsides and real challenges they faced themselves, but make it clear that five years in, the arrangement is a winner for each of them.

Although a how-to guide to cooperative living, My House, Our House would be useful reading for ANYONE who shares living space.

The book is well organized, well written, and easy to read. It is more than a list of do's and don'ts. The authors tell the story of the house they bought and the home they made of it. There is even a menu from one of their Thanksgiving dinners.

There is much practical information about questions to ask, boundaries to set, and other nuts and bolts of making this type of living arrangement work. However, the authors also make it clear that serendipity was part of their decision. They were doing a drive by tour of houses for sale, when one of them impulsively made a left turn down an especially pretty street. There was a small "for sale by owner" sign. It stood in front of their dream house.

Chic & Slim Encore: More About How French Women Dress Chic Stay Slim-And How You Can Too

Chic & Slim Encore: More About How French Women Dress Chic Stay Slim-And How You Can TooA few years ago, while vacationing in the Bahama's I observed a table of two French women eating lunch. They were both very slim, tres chic, and obviously not counting calories. Each woman had a full glass of red wine, some rich looking cheeses, a few crackers and a small assortment of other goodies. I couldn't help but wonder HOW they managed to remain so slim eating THAT. I was righteously nibbling on 1/2 bagel with a tad of fat (cream cheese) and some turkey protein thrown in. Yet I had at least ten pounds (ok 20)to lose. As a child I had lived in France and can still remember the delicious croissants, mouth watering chocolates, hearty breads, and rich cheeses the French ate so frequently. How did the women stay so slim? I had also noticed that the majority of them managed to look like a million dollars though I knew many of them were on tiny budgets. How did they do it? Then I came across Anne Barone's book at Amazon! Mais Oui! What a pleasure! I savored every morsel of Anne's delicious book, "Chic & Slim Encore". In the book Anne truly reveals how so many French women come across as attractive, chic, slim, in control, and poised regardless of the physical features nature gave them. She explains how you can eat rich, fatty, (forbidden) foods and remain tiny and terrific! What to look for in clothing so you always dress rich regardless of your pocketbook. How our feminity can be enhanced and appreciated if we so desire. The book embraces many aspects of the French culture and teaches aspects of the French lifestyle that we can use to enhance our lives. You learn how to simplify your life by aiming for quality not quantity. Moderation not accumulation. Buying the best you can afford in small amounts and forgetting the rest. Simple steps you can integrate into an active lifestyle to increase delight in the everyday! The book is a wonderful resource for enjoying and living the good life! Merci Anne!

This book focuses on the French Paradox. The French eat all this amazing food that's high in fat, rich, indulgent, yet they remain a much thinner culture than those of us in the US, who eat low-fat everything. Barone attributes this to many factors, primarily feelings of love and passion for food, rather than feelings of guilt. Part of French culture is taking time and care to go to the market, select the best ingredients, and to prepare food lovingly, rather than grabbing a low-fat (and probably unsatisfying) micro-meal of bowl of cereal. They French savor their food and take time with it. As a result, they are satisfied with smaller portions. They make sure to include courses such as soup, fruit, and cheese as part of their meal. These are filling, nutritious foods which keep entree sizes down. Another point Barone makes (which I really appreciate) is the focus on REAL food, instead of the foods we have here in the US now, whose ingredient listings take up half the box. Since reading this book, I have used my bread machine to make some French bread, which is cheaper and much better than sliced bread from the store. I had already given up on presliced bread, but I was buying it at the grocery. Now, I've gotten one step closer to real food! Barone also suggests shopping more often for only a few days at a time. This means food is as fresh as possible. This seems time-consuming, but it isn't. It's really great! I bought some whole milk yogurt and have been having it after dinner the last few nights with fresh blackberries. I add no sugar, and I relish every bite. It's heaven! The only complaint I have about this book is the section on men and relationships. I can't help but find the French "pout" childish and manipulative. I wasn't interested in that sort of advice when I bought this book, and I think it detracts from the book's overall message. In some arenas, French women are good role models. In the arena of relationships, I prefer my own experience to be my guide. Changing this aspect of one's own culturally-ingrained habits is nearly impossible and, in my mind, not desirable. The points Barone makes about relationships seem like stereotypes more than truth. Other than that, this is a great resource conveying an attitude about food that I hope American women can begin to embrace.

For those of you who loved CHIC & SLIM, take notice of the wonderful follow-up volume! Filled with advice concerning health, relationships, fashion, and self-esteem, ENCORE is a must-have for any woman's library.

Having lived in France and experienced the beauty of the French lifestyle, Ms. Barone is a proponent of moderation -something sadly lacking in our American society. We are a culture of "overconsumers," as is apparent not only in the way we eat, but also in the way we often misuse our finances and conduct our relationships. We also go overboard trying to be "perfect" -but generally use the media standard as our own, which has inherent problems. Ms. Barone recognizes this, and offers a refreshing solution: a sense of healthy self. It is not a matter of becoming a vegetarian or a protein powerhouse; it is not a matter of buying size four jeans in the hopes of starving your way into them; it is not a matter of applying a mask of cosmetics to make others think you were born with a certain "look"; nor is it a matter of building a draining career only to procure wealth. Instead, it is about appreciating the beauty with which one is born, as well as savoring the beauty of one's surroundings. It is about establishing one's femininity and being so confident as to not need to become involved in a relationship to avoid being alone. It is about using money wisely, and controlling finances rather than having debt control you. In essence, it is about finding and expressing true joy enjoying solitude, savoring art, making one's home a haven, taking pride in goals achieved, understanding the elegance of simplicity, and cherishing each age (one needn't be young to be a spectacular woman!).

Filled with sensible and savvy advice, delectable recipes, and an abundance of encouragement, CHIC & SLIM ENCORE is a wonderful gift to give to a mother, daughter, sister, friend -or yourself! Its lessons will be treasured by any woman. Sit back, sip your coffee drink of choice, and indulge yourself in one of the best ways possible -enjoy ENCORE and take it to heart!

It does not matter to me if Anne Barone is not a doctor, dietician or scientist--her diet and life mentality works for her and seems to be working for thousands of French women. There is no famous study backing up her opinions just the old common sense adage--if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc., than it must be a duck. In the same way, if eating cheese, butter, eggs, and bread does not put weight on the French, then it can certainly do the same for you. Anne Barone, in a fun breezy style, explains how to take the French lifestyle of shopping for just enough food, buying fresh and real products, eating slower over a longer period of time by taking smaller bites and using the continental manner of using a fork and knife, so that you too can be fitting into those wonderfull slim black skirts and form-revealing white blouses accented with a pretty scarf or antique pin. Sounds to good to be true? The key as with all things is moderation and good judgement. Anne explains how to think about your eating habits in ways that will help you to maintain good health while eating sumptious meals. In this, her second book, she actually gives portion sizes and sample recipes as well as additional information comparing American ways with those of the French regarding the six major lifestyle departments of culture, being a woman, personal style, cuisine, shopping and home decor, and love--ooh la la!

I find myself referring to this book just before I go to bed and have had time to mull over the events of the ending day--I try to tally up what I did to enjoy my life better, if I ate slower, took smaller bites, decided against that extra bite of pie-and I find that this time to myself helps me to encourage myself because I know I am on the correct road to health and well-being. How can I not be? Eating real food--not boxed convenience meals? Taking enough time to know when I am full and then stop just beforehand. Yes, it can be done and Anne encourages you along the way with her stories, examples and anecdotes. I recommend this book to all women who want to feel like women and look like those women who turn men's heads! Brava Anne---I look forward to your next book and hope you do a seminar in my neck of the woods soon.
