21 Things to Know Before Starting an Ashtanga Yoga Practice

21 Things to Know Before Starting an Ashtanga Yoga PracticeAnyone who's stuck with my blog over the years has probably figured out that I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Ashtanga ( for hate read, frustration and irritation), every now and again I tend to bang my head against it. It was during one of these ...more negative periods that Claudia brought out her book and I immediately switched over to feelin' the love again as a result of reading it, it reminded me why I love the practice.

Claudia's own passion for the practice is infectious, it's on almost every page. Yet despite that passion there's also an openness that I respect immensely. As a blogger herself Claudia's come up against questions and criticisms regarding the practice both on her own blog and those on which she contributes through comments. She's aware of what makes people uncomfortable or perhaps suspicious at times and is always respectful in her response, she is constantly exploring the practice and trying to understand it a little more herself.

In the book that translates as respect for her readers.

She doesn't just throw information about the practice at you, she invites you in, she doesn't avoid the difficult questions, she often struggles with them too. Her book is a guide to pretty much everything surrounding the practice ( and more besides ) but she's also a fellow traveller, she wants to share her view of the practice but her curiosity comes through, she wants to hear your view too.

The last section is called...

'Keep in touch'

Claudia shares.

The book is personal, she's telling you why she chose to practice Ashtanga, (that's pretty much the title of Chapter four).

' I will never preach or try to convince anyone of anything, but I can tell you some of the reasons why I came into ashtanga, why it has worked for me and how it continues to work.' p39

One of my favourite things about the book is an in-joke, I didn't get right a way. The book's title relates to a blog post Claudia wrote a while back and is the title of chapter three, on a hunch I took another look at the contents, page, yep, there are also twenty-one chapters.

Claudia loves lists.

For example

Chapter six : 3 specific cases in which yoga helped me personally

Chapter seven : 15 unusual benefits of yoga

Chapter fourteen : 9 lame excuses that keep people away from yoga

Chapter sixteen 19 suggestions to improve your yoga practice

Chapter twenty-one : 32 unusual ways to love ourselves.

Notice too that none of those chapters mention Ashtanga in the title. Claudia practices Ashtanga but I would argue her book is relevant to any style of yoga in fact it might be said it's a book about taking more control of your life

Chapter 18 : A few ways to practice yoga when we're off the mat.

Notice she says when WE'RE off the mat

This is not a practice manual, you wont find the ashtanga sequences laid out but If you are an Ashtangi then your going to want this book, it has, for example, one of the best guides around to making the leap and visiting Mysore, India where the Ashtanga style began, command Central if you will.

Chapter ten: An Ashtanga yoga guide to Mysore

Which talks about Accommodation, transportation, food, supermarkets, bookstores, sightseeing just everything.

But we also have...

Chapter eleven : Adventures of a beginner in Mysore

This is an hilarious account written by Claudia's husband relating his first experience of visiting ( being dragged along) to Mysore to practice ashtanga for the first time. This was a guest post on Claudia's blog, here James gets a guest chapter.

There's also a chapter on the Saturday, rest day practice, the oil bath.

This is a wonderful book and while Claudia has made a free pdf copy available on her blog, however your going to want it in book form, in fact your probably going to want several copies as your sure to be passing them on to all your friends who ask you about this strange bouncing up and down on mats we do and are tempted to give it a try.

That said, in a couple of years your probably going to find several battered and well thumbed copies laying around your local shala in as well as in Mysore itself.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and read it quickly. The format of lists is fun, concise and accessible. I especially found the quotes inspiring, thought provoking and enlightening. I have marked many by the author and by others to return too. The quote "If you don't have a fever and nothing is broken, then get on the mat and do what you can." particularly resonates for me. It has already helped to build my fledgeling home practice. If your passion is yoga, especially Ashtanga but not necessarily Ashtanga, this book is a great resource as well as a lot of fun.

I am very pleased with this little book. I thought that a lot of it wouldn't appeal or apply to an older woman with a neuromuscular disorder which makes simple yoga a challenge, and absolutely no intention of ever going to Mysore, but at the price and with all the great reviews I gave it a try.

I am glad that I did. It is well written, (could use some proofreading for grammatical slips, nothing big) interesting, educational, and very inspiring when it comes down to urging the reader to just commit to practicing. The author definitely lives on the fringe of yoga practice, she admits to being more involved than most of us will want or be able to be, but she manages to be inspiring rather than off-putting like so many accomplished yoginis.

A valuable and fascinating read. Highly recommended.

Claudia shares her personal experiences and years of study in the ancient mysteries of yoga. i loved this book because it answers so many questions around this ancient practice, the history and why it is still so valuable in to modern day man. yoga studios should have this book available to beginners as well as to those who just can't get enough of yoga!

The book was marginally of any value to me. I have been doing Ashtanga Yoga for almost a year. In the scope of Yoga practice I am considered a beginner. If I was just considering Ashtanga Yoga it would have scared me away. The stories in her life were not good examples and her focus on her being fired was never really bought full circle on how that really has anything to do with Ashtanga Yoga. The punch list and travel tips to Mysore India was a waste of my time.

The Florida Spiny Lobster: How to Catch It, Its Biology, A Crawfish Cookbook, and First Aid for Mino

The Florida Spiny Lobster: How to Catch It, Its Biology, A Crawfish Cookbook, and First Aid for Minor Diving InjuriesI love hunting for lobsters but am not very good at it. sucessfull hunters are loath to share their secrets. I was looking for information on how to find florida lobsters when I found this book mentioned. amazon had it in stock and I quickly had my copy. information on florida lobsters is very spotty, as far as I know this is the only book on the subject. If you hunt the spiny lobster (or the other 2 in florida) this book is a good guide. It also has several recipes for cooking lobsters and diveing tips to use while hunting them. I found it interesting reading for the knowlege of a creature that I knew nothing about untill my first trip to the keys.

I am a life-long diver and bug catcher (i.e. spiny lobster). Most of what I have learned has been from the "Crash and Burn Institute of Technology". Well the sad thing for me is, most of the stuff I have learned over a lifetime of recreational bug catching is right here in this 2-hour read. Everything the aspiring noob would need to know before they got in the water is here all the nuts and bolts, start to finish finding 'em, catching 'em, cooking 'em, cautions, and on and on. It's all in the book. Everything but GPS waypoints. I bought the book to help my teenage sons come up to speed with dad, and maybe learn a thing or two myself. No regrets. My boys learned a lot by reading it (things I tried to teach them but hey, I'm just their dad sound familiar?). I'm going to write a hate mail letter to the author for not writing it 35 years ago! Jerk! (just kidding). Get the book. Get a snare. Talk and LISTEN to locals, and pony up for more than your share of gasoline if you are sharing a boat. Good hunting, and stay safe there's never been a fish or a bug worth dying for. Will in Sarasota

I got the e-book version of the book. I paid $9.99. The information is good, but the book is way too short!

This book is informative but it has only three pages on catching lobsters. I would expect a book on how to catch a lobster to detail the depth, best locations etc, and provide more information on the hard part, finding.

Natural Beauty for All Seasons: More Than 250 Simple Recipes and Gift-Giving Ideas for Year-Round Be

Natural Beauty for All Seasons: More Than 250 Simple Recipes and Gift-Giving Ideas for Year-Round BeautyI decided to check this book out at a bookstore first, because I have gotten so many craft books that sound really great, but the materials and ingredients needed are very exotic or expensive. This book is no exception. Although the recipes and ideas are simple and easy, the essential oils needed (which are NOT cheap, mind you.) and the other array of items (that no one keeps in their house) would cost a fortune.

Her other book, "Natural Beauty at Home", is a MUCH better book, with the same easy and simple instructions, and realistic materials. Ideas like oatmeal masks, potpurri, and soap that are not hard to do, and not pricey. I highly recommend this one over "Natural Beauty for All Seasons".

I live in this book, I have owned it for almost a year and still find new recipes that are wonderful. For those people with sensitive skin, this is a must. My friends are always asking me to make them face scrubs and lotions.

This is the second book I have purchased by this author. She has inspired me to create more beauty products for myself and ideas on how to make creative gifts for my family and friends for the upcoming holidays. I'm always concerned when i give home-made gift that they may look cheap as presents, she has many ideas to make them look better than the store bought ones. I'm ready to go to some antique stores and look for bottles, baskets and etc. The recipes are simple and easy to make. I will be experimenting alot.

I have enjoyed all of Janet Cox's books although this is the only one I own (the rest I borrowed). The recipes are easy, the ingredients easy to find at grocery or natural food stores, or online. I would give this a five star rating except for the recipes which call for petroleum based products (and there are a few in everyone of her books) and the fact that some of the lip balms harden when they cool to the point of dragging at your lips. Easy enough to fix (simply remelt and add more oil to the mix until you are happy with the final product). Overal very enjoyable reading and gift giving.

I love this book! I just recently started making my own products, but some books I looked at had things that were too much of a pain to bother with. But this book is excellent. The recipes are easy and fun to make, and the ingredients are easily obtainable. The gift giving ideas are great, and it has just been a wonderful resource. I will definately be purchasing her other books!

Cure the Incurable

Cure the IncurableThe book is well written, and its orderly presentation is commendable.

I think the main value of this book is that it will help people to wake up and take charge of their health. Research the things the author mentions -eliminate sugar and fast food from your diet, the microwaved and/or fried dinners, hormone milk, etc, add breathing exercises and daily walking for a few miles... Simply take care of your health. And that's all BEFORE you start preparing your healing remedies, or reaching for prescription drugs. You have more control over your health than you realize. Also compare the cost of changing some of your habits to how expensive a trip to the hospital is, or a visit to the doctor or lost wages resulting from your being sick and not being able to work.

Medical doctors are only humans and they are only one source of information. Our lives and the live of our loved ones deserve more than just one source and one option. Especially when we are facing the so called "incurable diseases". This book is a reasonable start, especially if you have no clue about the chemicals you're prescribed by your doctor. And especially if your illness fall in to the category of "incurables". This book opened my eyes to what's going on and some tips on what I can do about it.

Most people would rather only have a pill to tame their diabetes or high blood pressure or high cholesterol than have to do a colon cleanse or full body cleanse. I admit that many of the procedures offered in this book can be often inconvenient, but my body and my life are worth some extra effort. Again, compare the cost of prescribed medication and medical bills to taking simple actions to improve your health -it is a no-brainer.

Get informed! Get educated rather than medicated! In any case, read the book and then make your own decision. Don't let others decide about your health and how you are going to take care of it. But you cannot make an informed decision without getting to the source of information. So, read it first, then decide what to do in your case.

Merry Christmas!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I had high cholesterol and one of my fingers had a problem at the joint. I went to see my doctor and he prescribed statin drug for my cholesterol and glucosamine for my finger. The statin drug helped a little bit but the glucosamine did no help. I began searching the internet for a natural cure for my problems and I came to read the review of this book. The negative review has no foundation to show why they did not like it, but the positive reviews revealed the book in much more detail. I decided to buy the book from Amazon. I agree almost with everything the author writes in this book. I apply some remedies described in the book for my problem such as garlic extract for my cholesterol and a lemon a day for my finger. My finger healed after one week, and my cholesterol went down almost 60 points in 3 months. Now I am off statin and very happy that I have purchased this book.

Below please find the review I wrote a couple years ago

Last weekend my brother was admitted into the hospital with severe gastric pain. He had three doctors, a surgeon, gastro and another doctor

The last two doctors over rode the surgeon recommendations that there was tearing/hernia in the intestinal wall and just proceded to give him antibiotics and IV and hurry up and wait and they said it was this, then changed this to that, and then whos on first.

Five days had gone by and it was just getting worse, abdomen hard, but the doctors still said to wait to see if the antibiotic kicked in and "supposidly" the white blood count was getting down to normal

With these five days that have gone by, his liver, on an empty stomach for days, was sucreting bile, to help digest food that wasn't there thus he had a pump attached to remove this

Because I read this book I had somewhat of a basic understanding of how our intestinal system works, I contacted the adminstrator of the hospital and after they were defending their treatment I and gave them a biological review of what was in Mikail Tombaks books by saying they stopped the colon for five days, with that said the waste was fermenting and decaying in his system, backing into his bloodstream, and could be affecting the liver and the kidneys in given an amount of a short time

They again reviewed his chart, got him into the operating room WITHIN one hour of my phone call, the surgeon found the holes and a hernis ( he is a heavy coffee and pepsi drinker )repaired them and said that within 36 hours he would be past any hope of surviving

So on that being said, read up, you dont know who you can save

For many of us to read this book was sort of like taking a horse pill...hard to swallow

After I read it, I came with a very good understanding of how to help myself...It worked!!!

If we all could just have a simple understanding of how our bodies work, we would all be healthier and happier....and maybe even pill less

Our colon is our life line and is over 50% of our immune system. Over the decades, with our wonderful diets, especially white flour produts and meat, etc. it is caught in the colon, like glue. This then builds up to have a herniated/ballon bowel, then because there is no movement in the area, parasites, acid and such start to develop. Acid then is forced back into our system. Along with that the impacted bowel then need room to grow thus then your gut is then enlarging and it is also putting pressure on your other organs, causing issues with them.

The bowel should be moved at least 1-2 times a day....and if anyone thinks this is a laughing matter usually are the ones that need it most

My daughter had been complaining about headaches, IBS, diabetes, no energy etc, you know the drill....and the doctor told her she needed a brain scan, had to be on a diabetic medication. She couldn't eat much of any food, even the water bloated her up.

She was becoming very scared as nothing would help her...even my suggestion to follow what Mokhail Tombaks she thought was ridiculous, until she became scared enough of the symptoms to try it.

She started with the enemas, and not only was amazed of what was coming out but also noticed a nest of worms (we all have parasites). Her stomach became flat again and no pain and now she understands

Also, was the recommendation in the book to drink fresh juiced (not store bought) apple juice (3 days). This cleans the liver, kidneys and gallbladder and other organs. This is a fantastic cleanse

Mikhail Tomabks books are somthing that everyone should read.

This helps to understand how the body works and how to care for it without the neccesity of medications that build up in your liver.

Take it to heart, it will help you

...any who are complainging about the wording in the book it was translated from Russian and I am assuming whoever translated it needed a bit more education on the English language, but, dont fault the book for that
