I downloaded this book to my kindle library in minutes. I received great information in a quick format. The basic bottom line about hair, hair care and maintenance all in a matter of 20 minutes. I didn't know what to expect when I began reading but soon learned that this is a how to guide that makes you fall in love with your hair all over again. This book is such a great gift to give to the young, who are just starting out doing their hair Independently.

This is an excellent reference guide for Lady Civil War Reenactors who want to create beautiful day dresses and ball gowns. The book has detailed descriptions of each dress. A true Godey's dress was for the lady of wealth, however many women of average means subscribed to Godey's to get ideas for the dresses they wore. Each page will give you an idea of colors, styles and types of fabrics used. This book is a must along with "Who Wore What" for a true insight into women's fashions of the 1860's

This book is beautiful. It is a very helpful reference and it is just fun to look at. It was also great to have the description of each of the outfits. This book is much more detailed than the "80 Godey's Full-Color Fashion Plates (1838-1880)" by JoAnne Olian, but then I liked all the full -colored as well.

Great book for finding out what they really wore for dressy occasions during the Civil War Era and just prior. Afterwards they did not have the money or the material to do this, but it is lovely to see what they did before the war. Reenacter's who do not wish to spend a lot of money on a gown from the wrong era need to see what is correct before some dressmaker puts them into whatever pattern that SHE likes to make! RESEARCH is the key.

I have this book in hard book version also. If you love history and womens costuming of the past you will enjoy this book.

For those who already own Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898 (Dover Fashion and Costumes), you shouldn't fail to get this book to see what the ladies in its pages (or their mothers) were wearing in the early days (1837-69) of the Victorian era. Godey's was probably *the* pre-eminent "fashion book" of its day--it lasted almost till the turn of the century--and in this period it was helmed by its iconic female editor, Sarah Josepha Hale, who more or less single-handedly defined its form, focus, and look. Most of these outfits are for women, though there are a few children's costumes shown, and except for the last few pages, where the bustle begins to appear, they all show the basic bell shape of the time, with skirts gradually spreading farther and farther out. The reproduction is bright and sharp, and there's even a full-color section in the middle. (Godey's was, of course, noted for its hand-painted color plates, which often found their way into the tents and winter cabins of Civil War soldiers longing for their loved ones at home.) Every picture includes the magazine's original description. If you have any occasion to search for large, clear pictures of Victorian fashion, this is a book you need to have on your shelf.

Nothing to Wear?

I have to agree with several of the previous reviewers who fault this book for being "light" on the information. I consider myself average in wardrobe knowledge and I really didn't learn anything new. It wasn't even presented in a particularly insightful manner. Some info was a good reminder, however, but plain stuff, like buying the right type of hangers for your closet.

I didn't appreciate their references to "this designer" or "that designer" when describing looks, because I'm not that familiar with them, and I would guess a large percentage of the American public is in the same boat. They also could use some pictures!! I know it puts the price of the book up, but BOY could they use some pictures (this bears repeating)!!

Save your money or look at this one in a bookstore because it's so short you could read it while standing in the aisles!

I got this book from my mother who thought my wardrobe could use a pick-me-up--I'm a stay at home mom who wears a lot of t-shirts and jeans, but this book changed that. I really thought if I was just schlepping the kids around, I didn't really need to do anything about clothes, until it was Easter and I didn't even have a dress to wear to church. To say the least, I needed help, and I found it here--I took their little test, was surprised by the result, actually, and decided, well, maybe it is time to embrace that bohemian inside me and start looking the part. And it didn't break the bank, either--I'm taking the advice a few pieces at a time. It was fun to read and fun to implement.

I liked voice and intent of this book, and got some very good pointers, but overall, the content is thin. The most important tips can be read in the NY Times Sunday styles review of the book. Would have preferred the authors dig a little deeper into some of the concepts. For instance, I should clear my closet of things that aren't flattering. How about some hints to a great fit??? If I bought it, I probably already think it fits! Since most of us can't afford the authors' hourly consultation rates, I don't think they would have siphoned off a lot of their business by letting out a few more tips.

I don't know how I cam across this book, but I'm really glad I did. Like a lot of women, I have a ton of clothes, but can never find the right things to wear (except for parties!). This book made me rethink my wardrobe by first helping me define the style I want to project, then weeding out (or editing) my current wardrobe, and finally carefully buying the missing pieces.

After reading this, I realized that I'd been buying a mish-mash of styles, so it was no wonder I had such difficulty in pulling looks together, even though I had some great clothes.

The description of how to build a core wardrobe you can reach for everyday was incredibly helpful to me. I also appreciated how the book's style references were up-to-date.

This book is not geared to any one type of dresser--its lessons are adaptable to professionals, students, home-makers, and everything in-between, and also for a variety of styles (they categorize them as classic, chic, bohemian, avant garde and whimsical). I highly recommend this incredibly helpful book.

I absolutely love this book! After borrowing a copy from my public library and thumbing through it at least 2 dozen times, I'm going to be purchasing my own copy. Of all the wardrobe-styling books I've read (and I own several), this book holds up incredibly well on repeat readings. It's a slim volume but packed with excellent stuff. Do not heed the reviewers who say this is light on information--not true! An uncluttered layout leavened with photos and whimisical pen-and-ink fashion illustrations make for easy yet memorable reading. The boys break dressing down into 5 Fashion Types: Classic, Chic, Whimsical, Bohemian and Avant Garde, providing a quiz and 'case studies' of each type. After helping you determine your Type, they provide valuable tips on organizing a workable and steamlined closet and stocking it with clothing items that meet the "Three Q's": Do I love it? Is it flattering? Does it project the image I want to portray? Their advice is valuable even for women who are heavier and lower on funds than the average fashionista, but in order to get maximum benefit from Joe and Jesse's expertise, it helps to be happy with your current size and have money to spend on quality new clothes. Even so, they almost make cleaning out your closet sound like fun . . .?! For those of us who cannot afford their personal services, purchasing this book is the next best thing. Highly recommended.

If you read this and gave it a good rating, then you probably are related to the author. The title of the book is "Start your own senior services business, your step-by-step guide to success". After reading the book, I found the title to be VERY misleading. It is NOT a step-by-step guide. It is very generalized that can be put to use in any business practice. It was very vague. It touched on subjects of how to run a business but it was not even close to be a step-bystep guide. Luckily I checked it out at my local library and didn't waste one red cent on buying this so called book.

This small book opened my eyes to the complexity of selling services to the senior market. Its contents prevented me from wasting time on researching services that I was considering offering. It helped me when I spoke with my insurance agent. Worth the money!!

I bought this book because I hoped it would offer some insight into important issues of offering caregiving services to seniors. One of the most important items, I think, is being able to bill the insurance companies for this work when it is covered. After all, what person would want to pay themselves for services that could be paid for by their insurance company? Unfortunately, nothing about this was discussed. I feel this book was written on a macro, not a micro, level. It is good for a broad discussion of what types of businesses cater to seniors and what those business basically do. But, it doesn't offer much beyond this. Just my opinion -your mileage may vary. :)
