The Japanese Skincare Revolution: How to Have the Most Beautiful Skin of Your Life--At Any Age

The Japanese Skincare Revolution: How to Have the Most Beautiful Skin of Your Life--At Any AgeI cannot say enough how much I love this book... easy, nurturing and women-positive suggestions. Not caddy and shallow like many "skin help" books. Advice is easy to follow and straight-forward. I will say however, that what is referred to as "lotion" is really what American's think of as "toner." However, when selecting one to use for the all-important "lotion mask," which I do twice a day you only need a HYDRATING Toner. I use Avalon Organic's Lavender Hydrating Toner for my combo/normal skin. It is AMAZING! Takes out your blackheads while hydrating and refreshing your skin... my ruddiness at the bottom of my cheeks is gone! B/c of the twice daily massages and addition of an Aveeno syrum and sunblock to my regime my 30-something skin looks FLAWLESS! Just don't feel pressure to buy expensive products any relatively natural or organic drugstore brands will do! Finally, I didn't want to buy the big sheets of cotton so I order Cotton Clouds that I wet and add toner to and then separate into thin pieces and lay allover my face like a puzzle for the 3 min lotion mask.

When I learned Saeki san had finally written a book for English language audiences, I ordered it immediately, knowing it would contain valuable wisdom and well-tested skin care secrets most Japanese women already know well. Saeki san is a beauty goddess in Japan (perhaps internationally in beauty-fashion circles). I've known of her for years, being a former Tokyo resident. She is featured on Japanese television and in fashion magazines all the time, and is highly regarded as a beauty expert by women of all ages. I'm finding her book so impressive, honest, and intelligent. She is a true advocate of taking good care of one's skin and overall health, and treating it like you would a precious, fragile gift. This book provides basic techniques and good habits to practice daily for taking care of one's skin, using one's own hands and intent to achieve positive results, no matter what products are used. She does not have a line of beauty creams to sell -any will work well, along with her instructions. I really like this about Saeki san. For me it adds to her credibility. I am following her advice, with excellent results so far. She is so sincere about taking personal responsibility regarding skincare health and overall well being. At last, I am able to consider her my beauty coach and mentor, just as my friends and colleagues in Japan do.

I have been following Chizu Saeki's skincare for about 3-4 months now. I can honestly tell you that her skincare routine is not a bad one even though it takes up A LOT of your time in the morning and at night.

I can't say that all the time that you are going to spend massaging your face in front of the mirror is worth it, especially for young women. If you don't have wrinkles and stuff, you will not see much of a difference except that your skin is getting quite soft and a LITTLE BIT clearer. However, if you do have wrinkles, this skincare routine might benefit you in some extent. From my experience, most of the fine lines will fade away, just not the deep wrinkles but then again those may need more than just 3-4 months of massage and stuff.

As one of the reviews mentioned before, her skincare routine is not cheap. You need to invest in more stuff than what you saw on the first few pages. The total investment can add up to hundreds of dollars if you are not that into drugstore products.

Also, please take note of the lotion Chizu Saeki used to make her lotion mask. It is not the normal lotion we would think of. This lotion is something like a toner but not quite. If you want to see how her "lotion" looks like, just go to Nars counter and ask to see their hydrating lotion(which is what Chizu Saeki mentioned in her book) or go to Shiseido counter and ask to see their softner (which might be referred to as toner sometimes).

I just got back from a trip to Tokyo. I was so taken aback by the skin of Japanese women. It seemed unreal for these women to have such flawless complexion. Besides Japan being an awesome place in so many ways, I was truly curious as to why they have such great skin. I returned home and started doing my research. Well the diet makes a hella of a difference ofcourse. I realized that they are committed to beauty, not the obsessive kind really but just enhancing what they already have. I am a vegetarian who tries to practice rasatafarian eating habits so it was not that hard for me to ease myself into certain little remedies they employ, u know the vegetables and fruits we tend to not have enough of and the herbal remedies we ignore. I came upon this book and did not waste a beat to order it. Although the routine may seem too much for some people, I took from this book that I really have not been taking care of myself. I have noticed SUCH a huge difference, it is amazing. I def.. recommend this book.. def!! You will be happy you did once you starting getting compliments such as "you're glowing today".

If you want more information on skin treatments, using your hands to heal your face, "skin fasting," and treatments for specific types of acne, I very highly recommend this book. It's one of THE best books I've read on skincare -her take on the skin is refreshing and positive, and she provides a wide variety of specific solutions that are really easy and effective. I love her writing style and her outlook, and whether you have an issue with breakouts, sagging, oily skin, dry skin, you name it, she has a solution for it.

I have been using some of her techniques for 2 years without knowing it (such as skin fasting, using serums and hot towels), and once I recognized them in her book I have refined them according to her descriptions. I've also added her cotton lotion mask to my routine, and incorporated her philosophy of genuinely showing love and attention to your skin on a daily basis. You can see a picture of my skin on my profile page or on my website, EpicBeautyGuide {dot} com, which is definitely a result of healthy eating, and using natural, organic skin care products with Chizu Saeki's techniques.

(Note: I've seen a few people mention that the lotion mask uses up a lot of product, but I suggest reading the technique more carefully and even watching the sample video Amazon provides -you really don't use much product, and you can also re-use the cotton pads on your neck, so you get 2 masks in one.)

The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse: An All-Natural, At-Home Flush to Purify and Rejuvenate Yo

The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse: An All-Natural, At-Home Flush to Purify and Rejuvenate Your BodyI was a skeptic, even after doing a cleanse 6 months ago. My first cleanse produced little of nothing. I did feel better for a few days before feeling worse again. I firmly believe I was one of those whose bile ducts were so congested, the first cleanse did the "digging". Over the last few months, I developed a huge amount of pressure in my gallbladder and knew I was going to wind up having gallbladder surgery if something didn't give. So ... I decided to try the cleanse one more time.

WOW! I passed close to 200 stones this go around (it was completely painless, although the cleansing process does make you have diarrhea fair warning. It is only for a few hours, and the results are more than worth it). The stones ranged from bright green to tan, most floated, and were slightly larger than a sesame seed, on up to the size of my thumbnail. I had *zero* pain in passing these. I did experience some nausea during the night, but a couple of ginger capsules took care of it.

Since performing this 2nd cleanse over the weekend, my reflux has COMPLETELY resolved, I can sleep on my right side without having acid back up into my throat, and I am sleeping soundly through the night with nothing more than Valerian (for the first time ever). The pressure in my gallbladder/liver is so much improved, I feel like a new person. My energy level has gone up tremendously. I will be doing more cleanses in the coming months to completely rid my liver of any remaining gallstones.

As to those who contend the stones are actually "soap", I can offer a unique perspective on this. I am a soapmaker by trade, and olive oil does NOT produce a bright green soap. Soap made from olive oil becomes a lovely creamy white shade. The stones that are passed during this cleanse are just that gallstones. The malic acid in the apple juice helps to soften the stones allowing them to pass more readily. If what others are saying was true, then I should have passed "soap stones" during my first cleanse, and I didn't. The stones are NOT soap that theory is complete bunk.

Having said all of this, I don't agree with everything the author recommends, but this is my personal opinion. For myself, I take Stone Free tablets daily to help further soften stones. I did the apple juice only on the day of the cleanse. If I wasn't taking the Stone Free, I would drink the apple juice for at least a week prior to cleansing.

I also had to reduce the epsom salts to 1 teaspoon per cup of water the 1 tablespoon that is recommended is just way too harsh for my system. I did the epsom salts at the beginning of the cleanse, but I used Oxy-Powder capsules the next day. I just couldn't stand to drink another round of epsom salts at that point. The Oxy-Powder does a super job of cleansing the colon, and has not caused any cramping for me. Just be prepared to stay close to a bathroom if you use very much of it. It's important to get all of the gallstones out of the colon, and I'm confident the Oxy-Powder worked very well for me in that regard.

I kept a bottle of organic raw honey close by when drinking the epsom salts and also the oil/lemon juice mixture I had to use something to get the taste out of my mouth. The biggest thing to remember is once you start drinking the concoctions, don't stop. I used a LARGE straw and just drank as fast as I could. I also put a bit of orange juice in with the olive oil and lemon juice just to help the taste. Next time I might try grape juice instead.

Yes, the cleanse will cause diarrhea. You might even be nauseous or vomit (I have never vomited doing this, but I rarely do anyway). The whole purpose of a cleanse is to remove toxic junk from your system. I think most of the negative reviews on this are because people don't understand the nature of a cleanse in general. For myself, I would prefer to keep the gallbladder I was born with. Our ancestors have used cleanses for thousands of years, but a lot of this knowledge has been lost in our modern "take a pill or take it out" society. The cleanse sounds unconventional by modern standards, but for me it worked. If there were no other alternative, I would have my gallbladder taken out I was almost to that point. But I am walking proof that the cleanse has improved my health for the better.

UPDATE December 2011

I had an ultrasound in March of this year on the recommendation of my family doctor, just to ensure I didn't have gallstones (I had a stomach ulcer caused by stress and H. pylori). The ultrasound showed NO GALLSTONES, which didn't surprise me at all after having done the cleanse several times. Just wanted to add this to my original review supporting that the cleanse does indeed work.

I completed my first flush last weekend and was pretty much amazed with the results. I am a 38 year old fit and healthy female, I eat mostly organic whole foods and have for the better part of the last 15 years. I do not have any major health concerns and don't ever plan on having any.

For the six days leading up to the flush I ate a completely vegan diet and drank the apple juice, which, gave me a bit of a headache since I'm not used to that much sugar. I felt a little bit sluggish all week because I usually eat lean animal protein with every meal about 5x per day, so eating vegan was quite a change for me but nothing I couldn't handle.

On the sixth day (Friday) I drank my apple juice in the morning as suggested and fasted for the rest of the day. At 4pm I went in for colon hydrotherapy and at 6pm I drank my first serving of epsom salts, which, by the way, does not taste very good at all but, again, it is worth it. At 7pm I started to feel like the flu truck had run me over and had a fever of sorts. By 8pm it was time to drink the second serving of epsom salts, it was a struggle but I got it down thanks to the straw. Within 5 minutes of drinking the second serving of epsom salts I was in the bathroom having a very watery bowel movement that almost instantly made my flu-like symptoms go away and after that I felt much better. At 10pm I drank the olive oil/grapefruit juice concoction and laid down immediately. Drinking the olive oil was actually not bad at all, I do suggest the straw for this as well as the epsom salts, it's a must. Within a few minutes of drinking the olive oil I felt something that I can only describe as "heat" surrounding my liver and then the gurgling started. I didn't feel incredibly ill but I did feel a bit of discomfort. At about 12am I had my first BM which produced about 15 bright green stones of various sizes. I was shocked, really. I continued to pass stones throughout the night and had a bout of "restless leg syndrom" not sure what that was about. I got up at 6am (Saturday) and drank my third serving of epsom salts. Passed many more stones. At 8am I drank the last serving of epsom salts. Passed many more stones. At 10am I drank 12oz of fresh squeezed orange juice (yum). Passed more stones...This went on for all of Saturday and Sunday morning. I will say this, my bum hurt like nothing I've ever experienced in my life and the thought of going in for the post-flush colon hydrotherapy made me want to cry, nonetheless, I did it. I had much discomfort during this colon hydrotherapy session but it was over in 45 minutes and after that I felt like a new human.

The three top things I noticed immediately:

1. My sleep was deep and restful, something I have never experienced.

2. My eyesight became crisp and clear.

3. My stomach felt calm and peaceful for the first time in my life.

All in all I would say I passed 200+ stones all shades of green to tan and the size of a piece of rice to the size of a hazelnut. I did not experience any pain passing any of the stones. My personal experience has been a good one, and, having done my first flush I am looking forward to the next one in 4 weeks. I would suggest this protocol to anyone wanting to optimize their health.

This is one of the most awakening books I have ever read. Andreas explains bodily functions is plain simple English. He explains medicines short comings such as their inability to detect gall stones and how they tell you there is a problem only after a blood test indicates liver damage due to the number of stones getting far out of control. He gives great insight for understanding your body lowering your dependency on your doctor who only has the "cut it out" solution.

I did the flush and passed at least 100 pea size gull stones. A day later, I felt 10 years younger and my mental clarity was significantly improved.

Buy this book before it is banned by the medical mafia. If you have had your gall bladder removed, it is an absolute must. He explains how to compensate for the loss and how your gall bladder is important.

I cannot explain fully how empowered I feel with regard to my health management after reading this book and The Timeless Way to Health and Rejuvenation.

Having seen several members of my family suffer at the hands of inadequate information offered by allopathic/orthodox doctors in the UK (maybe my father would still be here had he known about Andreas Mortiz) I chose to look for alternative ways to bring my system back into balance. At my first doctor's appointment I was offered stomach ulcer medication for my presenting symptoms which I refused, suggesting to the doctor that an ultrasound might be in order based on the family history I had given. It was then classed as a clear-cut case of gallstones by a consultant who wanted to book my theatre slot there and then. An ultrasound scan (which I insisted on before taking any surgical action)revealed no presence of gallstones but a spleen tumour instead!

I went looking for a way to handle my health issues as naturally as possible. With a seven year old that I teach at home I cannot afford to be in hospital. I found a colon therapist and discovered my colon was seriously congested. I cannot impress on you how important it is to get it clean first. (How come the doctor didn't start with a colon cleanse? A simple palpation would have revealed its state.)

So far I have completed two flushes, producing about 3 tablespoons of both gallstones (wonder where those were hiding??) and liver stones.

My sister has a gall bladder full of stones and is following the same method. She is the proud owner of a jar containing a selection of stones produced from her first flush. She is very excited about the next flush and looks fabulous. Her skin is improving, weight is dropping of nicely (as is mine)and her energy soaring.

Mortiz has a lot of support to offer on all levels; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Take out of his books that which you feel drawn to but, as emphasized by Moritz, you must follow the Liver flush procedure to the letter including making certain your colon is clear don't just assume it is.

I don't deny the accident and emergency services in the UK do a great job as do all the caring nurses and doctors. Their hearts are in the right place but the information being made available during their training is desperately lacking in areas. I want to see the medical establishment providing facilities to ensure a clean colon, liver and kidneys of every patient. They could be amazed at how little illness there might be left to treat. But then that won't benefit the drugs companies who I believe feed the doctors much of the information they use in the first place. Mmmm.... is it my cynical mind or do I smell something un

Absolutely fantastic information. I did the cleanse 4 times and it saved my life! Reset all my OTHER medical issues that supposedly had nothing to do with the liver. All my liver tests were normal and Western medicine had no clue what was wrong. Did this an passed HUNDREDS of stones each time. Thanks Andreas for this life-saving info.

Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair: Natural and Healthy Bodycare for Every Body

Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair: Natural and Healthy Bodycare for Every BodyThis book is AWESOME! It is one of the better books I've read on the subject of natural skin/hair/body care with homemade products.

It's very informative, very well organized according to sections (Face Care, Body Care, Mouth Care, Hair Care, Healing Salves and Balms)with special attention given to men, women and different life stages. It's very thorogh.

Dina Falconi provides countless recipes for creams, oils, balms and lotions as well as what those products can do for you and for whom they're most useful (i.e. mature/dry skin etc.)

Not only are recipes provided, but basic recipes for salves and creams are also provided so you can incorporate oils, butters and waxes that you particularly like. Say you don't want to make a beeswax and canola oil based lip balm (which is one of the recipes) you can flip to the back of the book and learn the proper oil/wax proportions for balms and you can try something else instead.

Falconi also explains the benefits of certain essential oils, herbs, butters and oils which is also very beneficial to those just beginning to make personal care products.

A great book!

Like one of the other reviewers, I have suffered for years from eczema. Reading that the other reviewer's eczema improved after consistent use of the recipes in the book, I decided to purchase it. What a huge improvement! My hands used to get literally raw looking...so ugly it was embarrassing. After only six weeks or so, I have only a small patch of eczema left on one of my fingers but it, too, seems to be improving. Furthermore, this is at the time of year when my hands would normally be worse because I'm an avid gardener and gardening irritates the eczema. I have tried many different kinds of beauty products over the years, but they must have had some common ingredients to which I am sensitive. I can't say how grateful I am for this book!

I've only tried a couple of things from this book but they're terrific. I had been looking for recipes for hand lotion and tis has all sorts. There's not much in here regarding aromatherapy concepts instead its a book full of recipes and concoctions. Looking forward to trying out the foot cream recipes. I also bought The Essential Oils Book to compliment this one.

I have struggled with eczema my whole life and just in the last year turned to herbal remedies to help. This book has been unbelievably helpful. Within weeks after using the recipies in this book to make my own natural lotions, shampoos, bath soaks, and cleansers, my eczema (which was at it's worst in many years) began clearing up. After a couple of months, it was almost completely under control. I never realized the extent to which the chemicals in commercial products aggravated my skin.

Not only has my skin cleared, but I love the relaxing bath soaks! I feel like a new person after soaking for a while with one of Dina Falconi's recipes. I'm also using the knowledge I've gained from this book to create my own customized versions of her recipes. I give this book my highest recommendation. Out of all the books I have purchased, this one is the absolute best!

I own a good number of homemade cosmetics books and many of them list some recipes that have some not-so-natural ingredients, like mineral oil and emulsifing wax. What I like in this book are the truly pure recipes and the amazing variety of them , respecting your age and your needs. And most of the ingredients are very easy to find in the health food store or over the internet. The design remember me of a antique herbal book.It is a very complete book, embracing the arts of herbalism, aromatherapy, natural healing, etc. A must have !!!

Home Birth: A Practical Guide

Home Birth: A Practical GuideExcellent details about all aspects of home birth, as well as encouragement for those choosing to birth in hospital settings. The history of home birth is included in a well-researched chapter, which is more comprehensive than other books. Many empowering stories and details are within. This book was written in the UK so there are minor details (such as the common home use of the Tens Machine, and gas/oxygen) that differ from homebirth in the United States. However, it is an excellent resource from which moms-to-be will gain more insight into natural birthing. It is GOOD to get ideas/stories from various sub-cultures around the world we are all unified as women in birth and learn a great deal from sharing with each other.

A lot of this book is about navigating the option of homebirth if you are U.K. based. Which could be really helpful if you are in the U.K. but not as much if you are U.S. based. However, even if you are not in the U.K. the stories are great there are a range of stories (and, honestly a lot of them maybe a tad too many) about home births, how they went, what people struggled with, what worked well, and so on. It gives you a good sense of the range of experiences that women have with labor and birthing. It is reassuring in the sense that it shows that home births can go beautifully, can have challenges, and, for most families profiled, seem to be a choice they really were glad they made. There is some more practical information what to have at the birth, what to expect, how to deal with challenges (or rather, stories about how people dealt with challenges), and so on. It is a nice supplemental book and one of the few out there primarily about home birth but I would suggest Mothering Magazine's Having a Baby, Naturally as a better key book on pregnancy and birth. They cover home birth to some extent. The Sears books on pregnancy and birth, while a little more doctor-focused/a little less natural than I tend to (with little or nothing on home births), are also very good basic books to start with.

I absolutely loved this book. it not only has up to date info but is easy to read. It has a lot of woman's stories and experiences. I loved how this book does not try to convince you to have a home birth. the author discusses the concerns of home birth. the reasons why women choose home birth and if you choose to have a home birth how to go about doing it. I give it 5 stars! definitely a book I will read many times.

I bought this book from the local bookstore two days ago and I just finished it. I was less than impressed. My bookshelf has several shelves dedicated to birth, labor and breastfeeding, and this is the worst one I have read in a long time. Just to be upfront, this book was originally published in London, and it is geared for a British readership. I got nothing useful out of this book except for a "home birth supply checklist." I would recommend any of Ina May's books, "birthing from within", or Deepak Chopra's newest book "Spiritual Lives, Magical Beginnings"

I would recommend this to a parent/teacher or therapist who is working with autistic children/teens.

Living with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Guide to Maximizing Brain Health and Reducing Risk of Demen

Living with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Guide to Maximizing Brain Health and Reducing Risk of DementiaPROS pulls together much MCI information, including strategies for improvement, and differences from dementia: *****

CONS too academic and detailed to be a self-help book for MCI patient; seriously lacking list of resources, print too small: ** or ***

This is a great book for those dealing with people who have MCI. A tremendous amount of information is collected here. Many other books (and support groups like the Alzheimer's Association) give MCI only minor attention and primarily deal with dementia. Instead, this book squarely addresses MCI itself, its characteristics (and differences from dementia), how it is diagnosed, questions to ask the doctor, strategies for coping and improving the life of the MCI patient, and so forth. It nicely clarified many aspects of this diagnosis, and I really appreciate having all of this information pulled together in one spot. High points and summaries are extracted and boxed (along with little vignettes), which is really helpful to the reader.

The biggest problem with this book is that the people who need it the most, MCI patients themselves, won't be able to deal with the textbook academic style of most of this book. Someone who is diagnosed with MCI has very little out there addressed to them specifically. They are caught in the territory between between normal aging, and dementia, which most information sources address. So this book supplies a tremendous resource, but because of the academic style, more for the family members of the MCI patient and for professionals who treat them.

I was really excited about this book when I read about it in the NY Times a few days ago, and immediately ordered it and read it cover-to-cover the day it arrived. The online preview of the book made it seem like it would be a great book to hand directly to my MCI family member (who is a DIY type who is refusing to avail herself of other help that is out there). I especially noticed Section Three of the book which has a number of chapters with proven improvement strategies, steps the patient can take to make a real difference. By chance the "Surprise Me!" pages missed all the dry academic discussions, so I hadn't realized that much of this book is written in medical journal style.

Unfortunately, this book can't decide what audience it is addressing. Some parts of the book are directly addressed to MCI patients themselves, e.g. "The previous section showed that exercise can improve cognitive functioning, increase the size and activity of *your* brain, and reduce dementia risk" (p. 254, emphasis added). However, the style and content of most of the book seems written for clinicians and academic journals. For example, they discuss various proposals for how MCI should be classified in the DSM-V. Frankly, patients and family members won't care about where MCI appears in the DSM. And in talking about whether specific individual nutrients help (in the section addressed to the MCI patient), they spend 20 lines of academic blather about randomized controlled trials, outcome measures, etc. (too much copying and pasting?). This level of discussion is way too detailed for the cognitively struggling MCI patient, when the authors just should have simply stated the conclusion: Eat a variety of foods, because so far, in spite of numerous well-controlled studies, there is no scientific evidence showing that there are any wonder nutrients to help with MCI. (p. 221).

Additionally, they did a less than half-hearted attempt to compile a list of "Memory Intervention Programs" (p. 152-153). It is misleadingly brief: only three in Canada, one in the US, and one in Germany; with a branch in Hong Kong. They should either make a serious attempt at assembling an accurate and more complete list, or they should not have included such an incomplete list at all. The effect is to make the reader feel rather hopeless about program availability, when this is not the case: In reality, there are many more Memory Training and Memory Care programs in medical centers in N. America. For example, they omitted the Memory Training program at UCLA (which has been licensed in several additional locations across the US). Other possible places to look for useful programs: the Alz Assn Community Resource Finder site for "Early Stage Programs", or perhaps NIH's Alzheimer's Disease Centers (listed in Jean Carper's book 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's and Age-Related Memory Loss. (p.299) [ETA Oct 3, 2012]

Finally, on my laptop screen, the font of the book preview is larger and more comfortable to read than in the actual printed book. So while I feel my MCI family member could easily read what I saw on the screen, the printed book is a less approachable smaller-print experience, that will be harder for many to read comfortably (ymmv). Since this book is ostensibly written for older people who have more problems with smaller print, this is an puzzling choice.

I really hope they (or someone else) writes a good non-babyish self-help book addressed to intelligent MCI patients themselves, that they take all the content of Section Three along with clarifying portions of the earlier parts, throw away all the academic prose, and produce something that will be genuinely helpful to MCI patients. For myself, I'm going to go through this book again and underline the most cogent portions, before passing it on, to make it more readable for my intended recipient.

p.s. There is evidence of hasty editing:
