How to Start a Home-Based Personal Trainer Business: *Turn your fitness passion to profit *Get train

How to Start a Home-Based Personal Trainer Business: *Turn your fitness passion to profit *Get trained and certified *Set your own schedule *Establish ... everybody wants!I started thumbing through this at a friends house. I was just using it as a time killer as I have no aspirations of becoming a personal trainer, but after a few pages I really got taken in by the writing. The author writes in a very easy to read, conversational style. The author's personal experiences, shown in sidebars, gave me the feeling like I was talking to a friend who just happened to know a ton about personal training.

Not to say that the book isn't in depth, as it does a great job of breaking down everything you could possibly have to think about when starting a business. After reading this starting any business seems possible, not just a personal training one. It's very concise without losing the reader in the details. In fact the authors writing style kept me engrossed with the in depth details provided.

If you're thinking of starting any home based business, this book will be helpful. Let alone a home based personal training one. Hell, it made me think I could start one, and trust me, I'm nobodies idea of a personal trainer.

Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic

Hypothyroidism Type 2: The EpidemicI have a family history of thyroid disease including both Hashimoto and Graves Disease. I took radioactive iodine for Graves disease 19 years ago, and have been on synthetic thyroid for many years. (Now supplemented with T3 dessicated thyroid hormone).

When my kids started experiencing severe medical problems we went to psychiatrists, endocrinologists and even a homeopath in search of answers. Their illnesses were described as non-specific depression, immune disorder, adrenal fatigue, etc.

I finally found a terrific internist who understood natural hormone balancing and who also shared Dr. Starr's belief that thyroid disorder has reached epidemic proportions, particularly among women. She immedietely started treating my daughter with thyroid hormone, but ignored thyroid disorder as a possible cause of my son's problems. It was this doctor who actually suggested that I read this book, and she gave a copy of this book to my son's psychiatrist as well. The psychiatrist had diagnosed my son with adrenal fatigue and was treating him with hydrocordisone and lexapro. He seemed to be improving, but he still was not ready to return to college this fall due to severe insomnia, inability to wake up, inability to deal with stress (adrenal fatigue) and fuzzy thinking.

Our last appointment was two days ago and the doctor had not only read the book, but had contacted Dr. Hertoghe in order to make sure that he knew exactly how to test patients. In a very short time was able to integrate all of Dr. Starr's ideas into his understanding of how our bodies work, and more importantly for us, saw my son's problems in a totally new way which I believe will be a breakthough in his long illness. Armed with this new knowledge, he was able to explain to us that my son's low basal temperature (it was 95.6 underarm mid afternoon and 3 degrees higher orally) was way too low for him to wake up in the morning. It had also been overlooked on earlier labs that his T3 was below range because his T4 was within range.

Clearly, we were very lucky to find an extraordinary doctor who isn't afraid to embrace new ideas. If everyone who reads this book gives this book to just one doctor, maybe we can make mainstream medicine take notice!

Dr. Starr returns to the essence of medicine: Listening to what the patient has to say and looking at the patient and finding evidence to make the diagnosis. He pays great homage to the early pioneers in thyroidology, referencing their publications and insights, and provides photographs clearly showing the physical consequences when thyroid hormones, despite "normal" laboratory tests, are not working. At last, someone has stepped up to the plate and decried the medical profession's reliance, no, blind faith, in third-party medicine (blood, spit, urine lab tests). Skepticism helped medicine leap forward centuries ago. Dr. Staar's excellent book brings it on. After reading this book, you will know, you, or someone dear to you, will have some expression of hypothyroidism type 2 (thyroid hormone resistance syndrome). His book will empower you to seek, no, insist, on getting the proper treatment. Dr. Staar's assessment that this is an epidemic is true. This is a must-read for all healthcare professionals.

I have traveled from Florida to see Dr. Starr and will continue to do so because he is right on target with my diagnosis and treatment. His book shows how this problem is an epidemic and is being totally ignored. When blood tests actually do show a problem it is being ineffectively treated, which I can attest to. Now that I understand the issues I can better deal with my health problems that grow less and less each day. I've sent my mother and my sister to see Dr. Starr. His claim that this disease runs in families is true in my case as well. I'm the fourth generation with thyroid problems. I finally feel as if I have found a health practitioner that truly understands my problems.

If anyone has any doubt that hypothyroidism is not an epidemic, or you want to convince your doctor to listen to you, please run out and buy this book. It will make you understand the issues and the interactions with heart disease, diabetes, obesity and many others.

As anyone knows who has used endocrinologists, it is totally frustrating to be treated by a doctor who treats lab tests, rather than symptoms. Mark Starr is a doctor who treats symptoms, and who is willing to use thyroid-suppressive therapies to get rid of all symptoms, so this puts him ahead of the pack. His description of thyroid resistance and its genetic under-pinnings is really helpful.

However, I rate this book only 3 stars. I do this because Starr's account is incomplete. He completely fails to acknowledge the existence of rT3 (reverse T3, or DT3, the mirror image of LT3, which is the desirable left-hand form) and the use of the FT3/rT3 ratio as a diagnostic measure. As a survivor of celiac disease who understands how the deranged biochemistry of Celiac-Sprue can force the body into making excess rT3, I know why it is important for some patients to have combination T3+T4 therapy, or even T3-only therapy, which Starr does not do. I have closely followed the thought of John C. Lowe DC on the benefits of T3 therapy, as well as the thought of alternative practitioners like Kent Holtorf MD, who frequently uses time-release T3 on his patients. Starr appears to be unaware of the trends in treatment initiated by practitioners such as Lowe and Holtorf.

I have seen well over a dozen books on thyroid. Too many contain mostly regurgitated conventional beliefs, a few were written mainly to sell the author's own nutrition products. Most insist thyroid medical tests are reliable. (How do they know this, anyway?)

This one is different. The author is a hypothyroid specialist and provides much evidence that over 50% of us have low thyroid problems whether your own doctor's much-touted tests show it or not. This is the book that really helped me understand my low thyroid problems and I have also learned how to see the signs in others (from pix and explanations in the book of things like the arm pinch test and swollen necks).

Starr explains how all chronic pain is linked to low thyroid, including those involved with diabetes, heart problems, both bleeding (like gums, periods) & blood clots (including strokes) and some cancers. If you have any kind of chronic pain, you need to know 1. some are calling low thyroid the silent epidemic (silent because officially denied) and 2. that ALL the standard lab tests are WRONG.

The only negative for me is that it did not really agree with the warning in two other excellent thyroid book about adrenal fatigue preventing recovery (these books are listed below). The adrenal involvement is a major problem because, even if you are able to get thyroid supplements, they may not work (especially if you take synthetic thyroid) and you would then assume you don't have a low thyroid problem, that it must be something else. This happened to me at the start of my long illness and was one of the major reasons in addition to being assured by doctors that their lab tests "proved" there was nothing wrong with me that I did not consider low thyroid again for over a decade.

So, I very gradually got worse and worse in health while I gained over 100 pounds despite eating very carefully indeed it must be easier to realize a low thyroid involvement if you gain three stone in three months, as a friend of mine did. (Another one was that I have very thick head hair and every list of symptoms includes thinning hair so please don't let this sort of thing put you off too. The truly knowledgeable writers comment that hair is actually more likely to become rough/coarse/wiry and that only about half of those with a low thyroid lose weight.

Also, if you are diabetic or TATT (tired all the time, even ME/CFS) or overweight (and can't lose it by dieting) or have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, etc, etc, then you MUST read this book. If you have chronic health problems (and who doesn't, these days!) the information in this book may save your life in the long run and relieve pain in the shorter term.

P.S. Subsequent recommendations:

The MUST-READ book on low thyroid is "Stop the Thyroid Madness", passionate and comprehensive, it explains that the most-used thyroid test is inaccurate and why synthetic thyroid does not work. The stopthethyroidmadness website has huge amounts of practical information and advice too.

"Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy: The Great Thyroid Scandal and How to Survive it" by one of the most experienced thyroid doctors.

"Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It" by Brownstein can also be useful.

This is a great introduction to Ayurveda. Great information and very easy to understand... I enjoyed the book and my only two complaints were 1. As someone already mentioned there was not as much emphasis on constitutional types and the subject didn't get as in depth as I would have liked. 2. The style of writing was not as engaging as I would've liked.

This was my first introduction to Ayurveda despite studying yoga for several years. I cannot judge how faithful the instructions in this book are to true Ayurvedic medicine; regardless of that, this book makes some strange and potentially hazardous medical recommendations. Pages 143-144 recommend taking the heavy metal mercury to "enkindle the enzyme system...and regenerate the tissues." Page 143 recommends lead as a cure for several disorders including skin diseases and venereal disease. Neither of these recommendations are accompanied by a warning that modern medicine has clearly identified these two metals as being toxic to humans. While these metals are promoted without warnings about their toxicity, the author warns readers about the dangers of vitamin intake. On page 87, the author claims that overpresciption of vitamins to patients by Western physicians may cause them to suffer from "hypervitaminosis." Page 140 makes great claims about the curative powers of onions. It claims that when used as a nasal inhalant or as eye drops they will relieve acute epileptic seizures, reduce cholesterol, and serve as a heart tonic. Ouch...that stings even just thinking about it. If the preceeding prescriptions haven't deterred you from subscribing to this book's recommendations, then the following might. Pages 42-44 suggest drinking a cup of your own urine each morning in order to cleanse and detoxify your large colon.

While this book covers enough amount of information for an introductory book... the writing style is terse and information is not detailed enough. This book was written in 1984.

I would highly recommond Lad's more recent book (Ayurvedic Remedies) that is written in 1998. It covers everything that is already in this book plus you get remedies for common ailments. That book is written in a more friendly manner and relatable. He addresses some western aspects (for example he touches on how westerners are averse to vaman/vomiting therapy). Its just $3 more, I would get that.

Security For Women, The Evolution of Empowerment

Security For Women, The Evolution of EmpowermentMs. Clark does an excellent job of focusing on one of the key factors of self-defense: Prevention.

The first half of the book focuses on methods of Prevention, such as:

Situational Awareness

Risk/Threat Assessments

Surveillance Detection (State of the art prevention method)

The second half focuses on Integration (Prevention, defending and surviving). Ms. Clark gives various self-defense situations and looks at them from different angles. This is done effectively by walking the reader through the steps of what is actually going on in the situation (Through a possible victims eyes, perpetrator, etc). By asking questions and understanding mindsets, Ms. Clark changes the way in which one views these situations. What's important is that this change in view will lead to a safer world for the reader.

The book is a little lengthy (450 pages), but is a must read. I hope Ms. Clark continues her efforts to make our world safer.

Well written, lots of diagrams, clear explanations. It would make an excellent textbook for a personal security course. I have hundreds of books and videos on individual protective measures and this book is easily one of the best, if not the best, of the lot.

While women are the primary audience, much of the book is equally applicable to men.

I am a single mother. My daughter is heading off to college. I started to become concerned because I am so used to being able to check on her, meet the boys she dates, know where she is and when she is coming home. I realized that part of what it means when she goes off to college is that I will have limited ability to protect her. This made me so uncomfortable so I started looking at a variety of books, trying to find good information that I could give her before she left.

This book is a goldmine of information about every possible threat a woman could face. In one chapter "Preventing the Worst" there are so many useful tips that I was able to discuss with my daughter. We took the time to have conversations along the lines of "What would you do in this situation?" or "How would you handle it if this happened?" The book became our platform for addressing serious issues that young women must become aware of.

Naturally I gave my daughter the book to take with her to college because it is the kind of book she can use as a reference guide as things come up. I also bought another copy for myself because I found so much useful information in it about how a woman living alone can keep herself safe.

I have never seen anything like this book. The information is so incredibly practical, yet easy to understand. It is presented in such a way that it makes you feel confident about taking more responsibility for your own security while at the same time living with less fear. I strongly recommend this book for any woman. Keep a copy on hand because you never know when you or someone you care about might need it.

I cannot believe this is not one of the top 100 selling Amazon books. This is one of the best personal security type books I have ever read. The information in it is applicable to a much larger community than just women, although the book is clearly written with women as the target audience.

Style on a Shoestring: Develop Your Cents of Style and Look Like a Million without Spending a Fortun

Style on a Shoestring: Develop Your Cents of Style and Look Like a Million without Spending a FortuneIn these tight economic times, many of us don't have the fashion budget that we may have once had. It can be disappointing to the fashionista because a lot of clothes from discount stores look cheap because of the poor quality. For cash-strapped fashionistas who aren't familiar with the thrift stores, they can be overwhelmed by trying to separate the stylish items from the outdated fashions and tacky theme sweaters. Many of us need to know how to stretch our fashion budgets without being overwhelmed and look like we shop in the toniest fashion stores. "Style on a Shoestring" is one of those books that will teach you how to do that.

"Style on a Shoestring" is one of the most comprehensive books about how one can look stylish without spending a fortune or being a slave to the "names". Andy Paige covers nearly everything in a down-to-earth, friendly way.

Here are a few highlights of some of the topics that she covers:

* She goes into great detail about how a jacket/blazer should fit. Most stylists tell the audience to pick the jacket that you can button and take it to a tailor, but they don't explain what needs to be done. Ms. Paige explains step-by-step (including an illustration) of how a jacket is supposed to fit.

* She talks about vanity sizing and sizing of clothes in off-price retailers. While a few people know about vanity sizing, which is occuring mainly in American fashion, not everyone knows the secrets of sizing in off-price retailers. She teaches you a great technique to work around the inconsistent sizing. This technique also works for shopping at thrift stores that don't have fitting rooms.

* She teaches you some of the tricks that you can use to distinguishing "cheap" garments from "bargain" garments.

* She also goes into detail about how other clothing items should fit.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to look stylish without having to spend a small fortune.

Style on a Shoestring : Develop Your Cents of Style and Look Like a Million without Spending a Fortune

As a busy working mother, I felt tired of my usual black and brown clothes and wanted some style advice to choose more wisely the clothes that I wore and purchase in the future.

I did not realise I would read Ms Paige's book twice in 48 hours, try everything on in my wardrobe and after following the guidelines realise that only 5 items were doing me any favors!!

This book teaches you how to put outfits together, and think when you purchase. How to be thifty yet still retain classic wearable clothes that remain fashionable.

I never expected to feel so good about myself when I dress now each day and for the first time in ages really enjoyed going shopping for my clothes... sort of like a treasure hunt. For example: I used Andy's advice when buying pants, checking the leg cut, front and back for signs and surprised myself by the great fit in the changeroom.

I really enjoyed this book and feeling excited about my clothes, and good about myself was a bonus that I didn't expect. Andy's advice is like an honest best friend there to guide you yet allowing your own style to show. This is a gem of a book and I am so thankful that I purchased it.

It was just OK. Nothing extraudinary and nothing new. I'd recommend The Pocket Stylist instead. There is info some might useful but to most it should be common sense. For example on how to pick the right fit. Does one really needs a guide to be able to tell if an item fits well or whether you can see undergarments' lines on your clothing or not?

I also found that most recommendations on the styles did not take into account specific body types. I could be wrong, but I got an impression the author was using a particular body type as a model for this book.

The book starts out talking about undergarments and wearing correct undergarment for each outfit, how undergarments should fit etc. Then it talks about how other clothing items should fit and what to look for to get the right fit. Also there is a lot of info on thrift stores and when to shop for what to catch good sales, some on organizing your closet, picking the colors and what each color means. there is also a section on what not to wear.

What I found useful was some info on the pockets, pocket alignment and shape. Information on thrift store was also somewhat useful, as well as the section on what not to do. Overall the book isn't bad at all, just not as informative as one would expect from all the positive reviews.

Andy Paige's Cents of Style company has been such a great help in my life I am so excited about her amazing book!

Style of a Shoestring is super informative, and approachable in understanding how to create your own personal style without looking like a slave to trends or blowing all of your money. I never knew all the amazing things in this book. There is an approach to planning a wardrobe and making it all come together and instead of vague statements like, "everyone should own a white shirt" Andy tells you how that shirt should fit, and what it should be like to get a good quality white shirt.

For real, informative, and useful advice on style this book is the best!

After having read a good number of publications of this genre, I've FINALLY found one that I'd rate a 5 star. Incredble amounts of incredibly useful information: how clothing is cut and why it does/doesn't flatter a figure, what not to ever waste your money on, where buttons need to be placed to insure a "no gap" blouse, and on and on for the entire book, all written in a conversational tone with a good dose of humor. I'm stopping back to pick up a copy for my sister and my niece; you won't go wrong with this one. Thank you so much, Andy!
