Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios

Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case ScenariosThis is the absolute best preparedness book, ever, for average people in urban, suburban and rural areas. I've been following Lisa Bedford's "SurvivalMom" blog for a couple of years, pre-ordered this book and devoured it after it arrived. The comprehensive and well-organized guidance can take a person from zero preparedness to eclipsing 95% of the population with just one trip to the grocery store and a couple hours shopping on the Internet. Today I'm ordering copies for my sister and a couple friends who live near the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the Pacific Northwest and recommending on Facebook for everyone else. Really terrific contribution to promoting and facilitating preparedness. This book is obviously a project of an exceptionally detailed-oriented person who has devoted years to assembling the latest, most useful information in an accessible, efficient manner. The author also helpfully relates her personal experiences in going from a mom focused on getting her family through normal everyday life to one steeped in emergency preparedness scenarios and practical strategies for persevering (comfortably, if possible) through events ranging from routine power outages to being stranded on the road as well as longer-term situations. She also does not shy away from matters usually associated with survivalists -such as the need to not just be able to feed and shelter but also to be prepared to defend oneself and family. The Survival Mom book coupled with wilderness survival knowledge would put someone way ahead of the game (she briefly touches on some wilderness skills -like fire-starters -but does not, for instance, tell how to build a teepee, trap game or do other hard-core wilderness skills -there are plenty of other books on those subjects). In sum, this book is a great value and a keeper.

Living in California about 5 miles from the Hayward and San Andreas fault, you've got to think about the "what ifs". Think it can't happen to you? Think again.... I used to live in Michigan where an ice storm has taken out the power for 2 weeks in the dead of winter. No matter where you live, the unexpected can happen.

"Survival Mom" covers the basics including food storage, water purification, financial and medical preparedness and communication during a crisis. It goes way beyond the basics, however, with the addition of charts, checklists and worksheets to help you stay organized.

A great way to get ready for that 6.5 to 7.5 quake we know will happen someday in San Francisco.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and I've got to say, this book does an outstanding job of filling a long standing need a survival book for your typical homemaker. I have an entire floor-to-ceiling bookshelf full of survival books and my wife hates every one of them. This book however, is something she would sit down and read! Reading the book, it is immediate evident that it was written by a mom for moms. Not that men can't read it, it reads just fine for me, but it is very different in its tone and presentation.

If you've been wanting to get your wife more involved in preparedness then get her this book! She might finally understand what you've been going on about!

I was as excited to receive my copy of Survival Mom. I know you're supposed to be neutral before you start reading, but I will admit I had high expectations for this book. Having visited The Survival Mom blog for a couple of years, I know it is my "go-to" place to find out about emergency preparedness and survival information.

The book is well organized and describes every facet of preparedness including having the proper mindset and avoiding panic, water and food storage, organizing your home to optimize space, learning to live without electricity, finances, safety and security and much more. I recommend reading it from start to finish to get the most out of the book, but busy readers who have an agenda in mind can easily jump around and choose a chapter they are most concerned about. Throughout the book are interesting anecdotes, quizzes, quotes and lists that enhance learning and add variety to your reading experience. The tone is light, and never alarming or oppressive.

The book met and exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it. Whether you are new to preparedness, intermediate or a veteran, you will find this book a valuable resource to keep in your survival library.

Are you confused with all the "prepping" or "survival" info out there? Wonder who or what to believe? Do you wonder why, how and where to start, or how to assess and beef up your prepping efforts? Do you want the hype-free message with no sale pressure?

If so, you will love this book, Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios

by Lisa Bedford.

Chapter One sets the tone for the entire book, "Prepare More, Panic Less." This is the message that comes through loud and clear. It matters not what the motivation is for our family preparations (whether natural disaster, job layoff, illness or something bigger), Lisa Bedford takes us step by step from awareness to action, starting with her own story in the introduction entitled "From Suburban Mom to Survival Mom."

Let's face it, the media is grabbing ahold of this "prepping" movement and is bringing it into the forefront and making it mainstream. People who never thought about storing food, water or extra blankets are now taking cues from tornado and hurricane survivors and packing 72 hour kits. With the reality shows such as "Doomsday Preppers" (no matter what your opinion of it, the show is topping the ratings and people are becoming aware of the need to prepare) and its copycats "Doomsday Bunkers" and those to follow, there are some Doom-and-Gloomers out there who are preaching panic and preying on those who are panicking.

Lisa Bedford's message says not so fast! On page 15 she recites "The #1 Rule of Preparedness... Do your best where you are with what you have."

From water to sanitation, food to organization and decluttering, from home security to survival finances, gardening, growing, preserving to living without electricity, from just starting out to seasoned "preppers" this book is one to have. Survival Mom was birthed and penned by a real-life wife and mom to other moms (but men can definitely identify) laid out in terms, reasoning and actions that we moms understand and relate to.

Great book to have on hand for the extensive checklists and information and it's the one that I will give to my family members who have not begun yet and don't know where to begin.

This book is for the whole family and has resources to get the whole family involved.

The Special Ops Workout: The Elite Exercise Program Inspired by the United States Special Operations

The Special Ops Workout: The Elite Exercise Program Inspired by the United States Special Operations CommandI have to say that this book is better than I expected. Stew Smith gives some good information about what special ops are and the qualities one needs to become a member of this elite cadre. I am not in the military, but I found this section to be edifying and it gave me more appreciation for those who serve.

The six-week programs are great. They are uncomplicated and use little equipment, but very effective a solid cardio base with butt kicking strength building. In short, this creates functional strength. You won't just look strong, you will be strong. This will make warriors of men. All exercises and stretches are clearly explaned with pictures. The only criticism of these programs is that I can't swim, so I needed to substitute other exercises, because I didn't feel like drowning. In addition to the workout programs, there is also an informative section regarding nutrition.

The one let down of this book was the 12 week introduction workout program, at least the first 4 weeks of it are unnecissary. If anyone needs this kind of introductary program, then this book is probably not suited for them. The bulk of this book is suited for serious athletes and those looking into special ops. I suppose this 12 week program makes it more appealing to the masses, but I don't believe this book to be one for the masses.

Other books Inside Delta Force by Eric Haney, Infinite Intensity by Ross Enamait

This workout book contains good information with challenging workouts. As someone who is preparing for the Army, I can say that this is most complete workout book for preparation on the market. None of the competitors come close to the full spectrum workouts this book has. You have access to programs with weight training, cals, nutrition, swimming, running, and rucking. You can mix and match certain workouts or just do what is prescribed. I do wish that there was a little more rucking insight other than just generic information. But other than that it is a high quality purchase.

Mike Mejia and Stew Smith put together a comprehensive book detailing what it takes to be apart of the Special Forces community. Together, their knowledge, know-how, and grit lay the foundation for what it takes, physically and mentally, to screen for the Navy Seals, Army Special Forces and Air Force Special Forces. The exercises and workouts contained there within give the reader a glimpse of what tools and abilities are needed to suceed and become a part of our Special Forces.

I for one have used this book and another of Stew Smiths book while serving in OIF. All the workouts allow me to stay in shape, keep the edge and ward off any boredom that creeps up inbetween missions and operations.

This book is a must have, read, and heed for any individual wishing to become a part of America's Special Forces. The information about the communities themselves along with the nutritional advice are worth their weight in gold. If being a warrior is what you want then take advice from the warrior ellite themselves. Their workouts are challenging and keep you on your toes. The book is well written, simple to understand, and a good bedrock to start from. Semper Fi.

This is a great book if you are young, in shape, and looking to join the military. If you are not in great shape then adhering to the workouts in this book will be difficult. The typical workout in this book could also take hours which is realistic if you are a SEAL since you will be allotted long periods of time for excercise. However if you are an average Joe and don't have 2-3 hours to do a force march followed by a one hour workout this probably isn't the book for you.

This book contains a wealth of information that any hopeful for SOCOM would be a fool to miss out on. The men that wrote this book know what they are talking about. Stew Smith has not only completed BUD/S himself, he has helped countless others do the same thing. If you really want to be an "operator" then buy the book, and DO WHAT IT SAYS. It can't do the work for you, but it will show you what you need to do.

The book is best because you are not overwhelmed with 465 ways

Buy this book if you are new at caregiving and don't know where to start. Because the American Medical Associarion wrote it, I imagine that it would be good for all caregivers to buy it. This book is a must-have for anyone responsible for realistic decision making about his/her ability to provide health care at home, as well as an excellent how-to guide for those who accept the inherent responsibilities of the caregiver. Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal Herbs

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal HerbsPlanting the Future provides both motivation and instruction for saving medicinal plants. The public's growing realization of the healing potential of plants is positive, but over-harvesting has led to a decline in native stands of many plants. Rosemary Gladstar has gathered a stellar team of writers to address the issue. The index reads like a who's-who of the herbal world. More than 30 plants are addressed in individual articles written by herbalists who know and love them. A grower of any size can use the information, the backyard up to a large sanctuary. A gardener can find the plants best suited their area, as well as how to propagate and care for them. Once grown, there is information about the preparation and use of the plants. My own tiny urban medicinal garden is part of the effort to save valuable plants thanks to guidance from these leaders. Herbalists, native plant enthusiasts and conservationists will all find value in this book.

Planting The Future provides a different focus on the botanical market, featuring works by the herbalists of United plant Savers and discussing strategies to save and preserve medicinal herbs. Chapters provide an A-Z listing of herbs and their history, uses and propagation.

This book is a compilation of chapters by many different authors with plant conservation as the main theme. Each author gives excellent information, with many great suggestions and resources for further study. It thoroughly examines the subject of excessive wild-harvesting to the point of endangerment of many species that were once quite common. This book gives thoughtful and interesting advice on how to be good stewards of the Earth and to help these plants prosper.

Handbook of Recreational Games

Handbook of Recreational GamesMy interest in the book is primarily in the fact that Boyd was the mentor to Viola Spolin, the inventor of theatre games. Boyd's approach to play had a strong effect on Spolin's approach to directing, and it is from her experiences as a director that Spolin evolved her own classic book, IMPROVISATION FOR THE THEATRE. A comparison between the books reveals the theoretical links between these to remarkable teachers.

I purchased this book when I first started teaching theatre to children. It was listed in the bibliography of Viola Spolin's book, Theatre Games for the Classroom.

It is great! I never run out of sources of games for my classes. I now have 3 teachers who work with my program and I give every one of them a copy of this book when they start.

The games are simple, imaginative and teach socialization and collaborative skills, while being so fun that the kids request the games over and over again.

I highly recommend it.

A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's End

A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's EndIn A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's End, Joseph J. Fins, MD, has written a timely and sage book whose readership is likely to include the clinician, the legal practioner, as well as the lay person. Dr. Fins addresses the history of palliative care in careful, measured tones, and he writes well. The book's greatest asset may be its respect for its subject, the dying, and Dr. Fins gives all concerned parties equal voice in his sensitive, yet instructive text on life's final moments. This book should be on the required reading list for everyone who has to address a loved one's (as well as their own) death.

I'll admit it, I've become an oddity: a clinically informed lay person regarding end-of-life matters. I breezed through APEOC, nodding knowingly at most of the scientific disease-state terminology. The point is, you can too. For the specific symptom is not as important as the thought process Fins shares with readers. That this book is written for med students means it's also for lay people, because it's at heart a process guide.

The only way citizens can manage hospitalization and/or end-of-life matters is through information. Prognosis is but one type of information. Also crucial is understanding how the institutions we're bedded in function. According to what precepts and roadmaps. APEOC is a roadmap into provider thoughts when treating the obviously dying.

Being a writer and reader on these topics, my antennae are up, and I picked up a problem statement toward the end. Paraphrasing, in regards to unaccompanied patients with written directives and a study citing that those directives were (more) often ignored, Fins failed to say the next logical (and required) thing: "so, med students, don't you ignore ADs in these instances." I cite this oversight because it's important to realize that even docs who orient themselves toward more humane clinical practices miss pitches. This, of course, is why there's something called "patient advocacy".
