The Safe Baby, Expanded and Revised: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Safety and Healthy Living

The Safe Baby, Expanded and Revised: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Safety and Healthy LivingHoltzman's book is a full soup-to-nuts resource for any parent who has questions about how to keep their children as safe as possible. Her approach is supportive without scare tactics and her style is very readable, full of bullet points, checklists and call out boxes.

Although it's called "The Safe Baby" it really is about safety for all children. The book takes you through each room in the house as well as additional scenarios that can cause concern such as poisons, hiring a baby sitter, gun safety, fire safety, etc.

The appendix is full of additional resources that are so helpful including common poisonous houseplants, recall information, safety products and additional checklists.

This book would make a great shower gift for a new mom or a gift for any mom who needs some reassurance about keeping her kids safe. Holtzman's expertise as well as being a mom makes her a very valuable resource herself.

Marijo Tinlin, Editor-in-Chief

This expanded and revised edition has all the helpful advice of the first, plus a financial aspect. The book includes money saving tips and discusses topics such as cloth diapers vs. disposable diapers. Holtzman does a great job staying objective presenting readers with facts and information, but letting them decide which option is best for their family.

As with the first edition, I love that Holtzman says she wants to share her advice, but she certainly does not want to overwhelm the readers. I am the type to get easily paranoid, but I always try to remember that I don't (and probably can't without becoming a nervous wreck) have to follow every rule or guideline.

This book would be a great resource for all parents, grandparents, and even baby-sitters or child-care providers. Holtzman covers topics you wouldn't even think twice about, such as possible contaminants in water and what type of furniture and flooring is best for a nursery. I particularly like the section on creating your own household cleaning products (less harmful and inexpensive!).

Debra Holtzman's revised edition of her award-winning "The Safe Baby" (2005) contains a myriad of essential advice and resources both up-to-date and relevant for all parents and grandparents. This "all-in-one" guidebook encompasses the basics of child safety and the obstacles that parents typically encounter in the hectic and often chaotic world of parenting. Holtzman elaborates on subjects ranging from crib safety to baby food, from buying the healthiest foods to picking the right babysitter, from traveling safely with babies to ensuring a hazard-free environment back at home. These are just a few of the topics that form the backbone to "The Safe Baby," as Holtzman pays close attention to detail in her "how-to" guide of maintaining a sanctuary for all babies.

I personally recommend this revised edition of "The Safe Baby" for its sheer amount of vital information for the uprearing of infants, as well as the countless tips for saving money and being environmentally-friendly in the process. As a highly-esteemed professional in the field of child health and safety, Mrs. Holtzman is the "go-to" expert and her latest book is especially and undeniably a "safe" buy.

The 36-Hour Day, fifth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzhei

The 36-Hour Day, fifth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementias, and Memory LossWhen my father developed dementia some years ago, I didn't know what to do at first. This book proved to be a big help for my family and me, and now I'd like to be of some small help to you.

Dementia doesn't strike out of the blue. It builds up over a period of years, and in the beginning there is an understandable tendency to consider a loved one's unusual behavior to be just another sign of aging. However, when Alzheimer's or other dementias are at play, sooner or later you may well find yourself in need of some help when trying to deal with your loved one's needs. Indeed, until you understand more about Alzheimer's you may not fully appreciate the struggles your loved one is dealing with. It is a very scary thing to gradually lose some of your important mental capabilities, and there is a resulting tendency among those with dementia to either act out or to withdraw from normal family communications.

Here's your chance. If you even suspect Alzheimer's or another dementia (they are not necessarily the same), I strongly recommend that you get this book and read it. It will help you to better:

1. understand what your loved one is going through.

2. deal with the behavioral issues associated with Alzheimer's.

3. find medical help.

4. find additional Alzheimer's and dementia information from a number of helpful organizations.

5. discover support groups.

6. save a lot of time (when you are a caregiver for someone with dementia, time is usually in very short supply--hence, the title of the book).

7. evaluate financial possibilities.

8. understand that you are most definitely not alone in your dealing with dementia's effects.

This book is written by experienced authorities in the field, and it is easy enough to read for those without medical backgrounds. It is the likely all-time best-seller in its field for a reason.

I wish I had bought this book as soon as my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My father has received very little information from my mother's doctors on what to expect as her disease progresses and more importantly, how to deal with these issues. When I received the book, I looked up her latest problem in the index, dizziness, and turned right to an informative section that helped clarify what's going on with my mom. The bathing sections are helpful for understanding and thus coping with those issues. I appreciate the depth of topics and detail for symptoms that Alzheimer's patients can have; I am also grateful for the huge emphasis on respite care for the caregiver. This gives my siblings and me another avenue of discussion in getting help for my dad, who like many spouses has his own health issues.

My only problem with the current hardback edition is the text size it's a small font and closely spaced. I would hope that future revisions would enlarge the print a bit, especially since this book is generally going to be read by adults who appreciate a little larger print.

Overall I highly recommend it I've been flipping between this book and the Mayo Clinic book on Alzheimer's, and while they both have excellent information, I feel that this book is the better one for detailed information on the myriad little things that crop up with care of a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

As a caregiver of an elderly Alzheimers patient, this book was a life saver. I had so many questions that doctors and neurologists just didn't explain. If you suspect that you will be a caregiver, this book is an essential for your library.

I really have to strongly recommend this book it came highly recommened to me and this new edition is exactly what my family was looking for. Our Mom was diagnosed with alzheimer's and we have searched everywhere for information, and I own several books to help me understand this challenging disease. This is the go-to guide for caregiving, it is clear and gives a realistic perspective on what we can expect. Between the support groups at our memory clinic, and another book that also was just released on alzheimers treatment and prevention by Dr. Isaacson, I feel that I am now well-equipped with information and feel better about what lies ahead of us. Kudos to Dr. Mace and Dr. Rabens.

My dad had Alzheimer's Disease, and was getting much. He was in a different state, and my mom had taken care of him until she could not any longer. The stories I heard about my dad, and they were off the chart, I decided to get some information about this disease. Most people say this is about the best book out there to read on Alzheimer Disease. I had to leave sooner than expected, because he had a turn for the worse,so I looked through the book as much as possible to be a little prepared when I did see him. I did not make it in time...my father died the morning I was leaving. I had just received the book in time to read, but had to leave earlier than I thought, so really couldn't read it as close as I wanted to. I took care of him for a year in my home before he got very bad. I do think anyone with family or friends with this disease should be sure and read this book. It has a lot of things that you can really do wrong around a person with the disease, and things you can do that really help you understand "why" they are doing the things that they do. My father did things that if he knew he did....it would have made him sick. My father was one of the kindest persons I have every known. But, with this disease....behavior will change. Take time and order this book to help understand what they are going through, and what you yourself can do to take of of "You"! Great book.

Body by You: The You Are Your Own Gym Guide to Total Women's Fitness

Body by You: The You Are Your Own Gym Guide to Total Women's FitnessI loved the Mark Lauren's first book, You Are Your Own Gym. It was a great book in the severely lacking bodyweight training market. It is still, in my opinion, the best book on bodyweight training in the market.

However, as great as that book is, this one is equally as effective for the specific market for women. There are so many great things about this book. I especially like the information in the introduction where he explains that women are aspiring for looks that are only achievable by a very small minority and that are not, in reality, healthy. He wants you to appreciate the body that you have, but to try and make it as healthy as possible.

I have had a lot of training in the field of functional training and I will never do anything else. I completely agree with the statements that chronic cardio is just asking for overuse injuries. I was a marathon runner and now I am a broken marathon runner. I can speak to this first hand. This book emphasizes short, high quality functional exercise that is the key to a healthy body. I whole heartedly agree.

The exercise section is wonderful and reminds me of another book Convict conditioning. The strength is in the progression of exercises in order to achieve more and more challenging exercises. But, unlike Convict conditioning, this is for women and includes more steps of progression. This is exceptional since a woman's strength gains are different and not as great as a mans.

This is my new go to training book. I received an advance copy for review, but I liked it so much that I am ordering the final version when it is ready for release. If you are tired of the confusion of the fitness market and want simple and effective training, this book is IT. Thank you Mark!

After working many years in a long-hours, sedentary job, I found myself in sorry physical shape. I started turning that around by making simple changes to food choices and becoming more active. That helped a lot, but eventually I found I hit a plateau and was no longer becoming stronger or fitter.

Just when I was thinking I would have to start going to the gym or acquire a lot of exercise and weight training equipment for my home, this book came along. Right off the bat, what Mark Lauren was saying resonated and made sense to me. Here are some of the key messages:

* You don't need equipment, trainers or a gym to get fit and stay fit

* To become lean and fit, you must build muscle

* Adding muscle is the key to losing weight because muscle burns more calories

* Weight training allows women to firm and tone their bodies; women do not have the hormonal makeup to develop bulging muscles

* Cardio exercise is time-consuming and can be counterproductive, because it doesn't use most of your muscle mass and may actually cause a loss of muscle

Mark Lauren prescribes a system of weight training that is designed to exercise the entire body, build lean muscle and give you more grace and balance. You don't need any equipment; you just use the walls and furniture around you. The system is described clearly and completely and you can get started right away.

(I don't want to get off track here, but I remember a few years ago seeing an interview with Martina Navratilova, and while out on a walk in the country, she talked about how she exercised without equipment, using her own body weight, and demonstrated several of the exercises she did regularly. This is one of the world's top athletes, not somebody trying to sell you something.)

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

In this book, Mark Lauren prescribes five types of bodyweight training exercises, called movement categories:

* Pulling

* Squatting

* In-line Pushing

* Perpendicular Pushing

* Bending

Lauren divides 125 specific exercises into each category (25 in each movement category), ranks them from easiest to hardest and includes good, detailed descriptions and illustrations of each exercise. Every one of the exercises can be done in your home, at an office or in a hotel room without any specialized equipment.

The training system is designed for you to consistently train three days a week for 30 minutes each time, with a day of rest between sessions. The book includes workout session charts that list each of the five movement categories, tell you how many sets and repetitions of each type of exercise to do in the session and a column in which you can write the number of the specific exercise you will do that session in each movement category.

You begin the program with a couple of evaluation sessions, so that you can determine where you should start your program. For example, you will look at the ranking of the exercises in the Pulling category and try them until you reach the most challenging exercise you can still complete within the prescribed time period, using the designated number of sets and reps, and in proper form. If that's #5, then you write #5 on your exercise chart for the session and that's where you will begin your program for the Pulling category. You'll repeat this for each movement category and wind up with a chart filled out with the numbers of the exercises in each category that you'll begin your program with. You might be much better at pulling than squatting exercises, in which case your starting exercise for pulling might be much higher than your starting exercise for squatting.

Once you've completed your two evaluation sessions and established your starting points for each movement category, you follow the program through 4-week cycles that Lauren describes. You upgrade from one exercise to the next-harder exercise once you can do all the sets and reps in good form. You do this at your own pace. If you need to take it down a notch, Lauren tells you how to do that. You can also go to Lauren's website to get (for free) other exercises to add to your program and to share experiences with others.

SPECIFIC EXERCISES

Just to give you an idea of the exercises in the book: In the Pulling movement category, they include wrapping a towel around a doorknob, placing your feet on each side of the door, grasping one end of the towel in each hand, leaning back with bent knees and pulling yourself up to the door. Other exercises (in different categories) include many varieties of presses, push-ups, pull-ups and hip raises; again, all ranked from easiest to hardest.

STYLE

When I read that Mark Lauren has, for many years, been a physical trainer for military elites, I had some trepidation. I thought he might have a boot-camp style, full of aggressiveness and macho posing. I was pleased to find his style to be just the opposite. His manner is no-nonsense, for sure, but he shows a lot of respect for women and is helpful and encouraging. What a refreshing approach in these days when so many trainers seem to think that yelling at people and humiliating them is motivational.

I'm just getting started on Lauren's program, but I can report that the book is clear and easy to follow. It's exciting to look at all the exercises and imagine getting stronger and working all the way to #25 in all five categories. If you're a woman who is ready to start bodyweight training, I can recommend giving this a try before spending time and money on a gym, trainer or expensive equipment.

Note: The book also includes a nutrition portion, but I am not using it. I have other resources I use for nutrition, including SparkPeople.

UPDATE: I've been working with the program for several weeks. I don't always do it every other day, but I'm pretty consistent. I started in the very low numbers of the exercises, especially those involving upper-body strength. I've moved up a few steps, but I'm taking it slowly so that I don't get discouraged. I do feel stronger in the upper body and I think I'm getting a little stronger in the core. I was already strong in the legs, so I don't see as much change there.

MY THOUGHTS

LOVED IT

Every January, I try to get back into shape and this year I think I found the perfect book to help me out. I can't get to a gym and with a bad back, some exercises are just impossible for me to try. I am now working through this program and I find that it is really easy to do. No special equipment, no special things, just a door and some floor space to make the whole thing work. You can make the exercise as easy as you need it to be and for anyone with injuries, it is easy to work up to doing more repetitions as the author recommends.

I have found that my strength is increasing and I can easily work in these movements. I really recommend that you find a very stable door I use the fire door between my house and garage. I was afraid that using one of the other interior doors would be too much of a strain on the hinges. I really don't mind doing these movements and the whole program reminds of a fitness class that I took in college that had me in the best shape ever. I really recommend this easy to use guide to getting you back into shape.

This book IS all you need if you can't afford a gym membership and want better faster results. Mark Lauren is a certified military physical training specialist, special operations combat controller, triathlete, and champion Thai boxer. He is NOT some ordinary guy who was obese, lost weight, and wrote a book to cash in on his journey. Instead, this book shares his knowledge of fitness for those who want to get in shape without gym memberships, funky expensive equipment, and pricey trainers you can't afford. He uses a simple yet extremely useful strategy, your own body weight.

Mark Lauren uses the same movements the military's advanced forces, SEALs to Green Berets use. He also addresses a woman's needs and concerns by adjusting every exercise to fit your own physical ability to accomplish each movement. Each movement category progresses from easiest to hardest so you're never doing the same exercise over and over. Train 3 days a week, with a rest day between workouts.

Movement Categories: Pulling, Squatting, In-line Pushing, Perpendicular Pushing, and Bending. Difficulty is adjusted by changing the intensity of movements through leverages, pauses, and single or double-limb engagement. Broken down into 3 Cycles each lasting 4 weeks, with 25 exercises listed for each category to choose from. This progression lets you avoid hitting a plateau and continue building lean muscle and a faster metabolism.

Excerpt from book "The reality is that strength training will make you smaller, not bigger, because increasing lean muscle mass will burn up fat over your entire body." -"Your muscles will not look toned unless there is little fat masking them."

Remember ladies...we don't have the same hormonal makeup as men therefore we don't turn into the hulk (unless you're using certain substances) we instead get leaner, harder, sexier bodies : )

I am a fan of Body by Science: A Research Based Program to Get the Results You Want in 12 Minutes a Week but I don't necessarily want to go to the gym to exercise. I was happy to get a review copy of this book. Somehow I thought that it would be full of exercises to do without any aids except your body and the floor and possibly a mat and a wall. Many and maybe most of these exercises involve pieces of furniture or doors. I live in an older house and I really don't think my door hinges and frames would hold up to the challenge. And I don't think I have the right kind of furniture. However there are also lots of exercises without props also.

I do like the progression he offers. He does not just give you easy, moderate and hard exercises for a particular function he gives you lots of exercises in a detailed progression so you see the path forward.

He offers exercises in 5 movement categories (Pulling, Squatting, In-Line Pushing, Perp Pushing and Bending) with 25 exercises or variants described and listed in order of difficulty. Also he details how to plan your work out cycles and individual work outs and chart your progress. I wish that they had put each movement category in a separate chapter and changed the page footers to match so it would be easier to find a movement category. I have a black and white review copy so perhaps there are colored visual cues that I can't see.

I'm not sure who would need the third part of the book a simple overview of his views on nutrition. I follow a primal/paleo diet so it was not speaking to me but I did appreciate his emphasis on the need to eat some fat. He suggests multiple small meals of low Glycemic index foods although he does recommend things like fruit juice (!) and oatmeal ...

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That WorksThis is the first book I read on intuitive eating. It really made a lot of sense to me. I researched intuitive eating online, looking at the relevent studies. There's not much research, yet, but the research does support intuitive eating. Just knowing that diets fail 95% of the time, on average, tells the story right there.

I jumped right into this eating approach with both feet about a month ago. When I started this diet I was a restrictive eater/binge eater. I was about 10-15 pounds overweight. I weighed myself one to four times a day. I never kept any food in the house that might truly make me want to eat a lof of it. Then, when I was out and had access to food that I craved, I would binge heartily. I'm extremely knowledgeable about nutrition, and only allowed myself to keep whole grains, no trans-fats, etc. in the house.

I really thought that I had a very healthy approach toward food. Then, I started intuitive eating a month ago. At first, it was stadium franks, hot dogs, chocolate, cream horns, turnovers, and a lot of them. I weighed myself recently, and found that I had only gained 3 pounds after eating this way to my heart's content. I stopped when I felt satisfied, and only ate when I felt hungry.

Just recently, do I feel the need for sugar/fat tapering. I'm starting to crave strawberries and cooked cabbage. I'm down to 2 cream horns a day, instead of 5. I don't even care to eat most of the other sugary food I keep around. I have to throw it out. My pants are starting to feel like they're loosening back up slowly.

I can't believe it. I'm 33. I've obsessed about my eating, dieted and binged (sometimes on a daily basis) for the past 18 years, only to weigh more than ever.

Now, to be surrounded by the food I always craved and binged on, and to not even want it is amazing!!!!

I can't support this concept enough.

Trust you body!!!! It knows what it's doing!

I really have to disagree with Yvonne's comment "But obese people do not start being overweight due to dieting!" As a child I always enjoyed eating, but I was not overweight. In fact, I didn't think too much about food at all. I went on my first diet at age 15, with the goal of losing 5 lbs. After I lost 5 lbs by eating a lot of salad and little else, I could fit into all my jeans and a few people commented on how good I looked. I was hooked.....I lost another 5 lbs. and looked great (probably too thin, but I thought I looked great!), but the constant restricting and hunger made me start to obsess about food! I would end a 2 day fast by eating an entire bag of cookies....My first diet was the beginning of a 20 year cycle of fasting and compulsive eating that left me 75 lbs overweight. I've been in lots of Compulsive Eating support groups over the years and I've heard the same story. If you put a child in a room filled with candy and junk food and tell her to eat whatever she wants, the food will quickly lose much of it's appeal......or tell her not to eat one bite and see how important that food becomes....

This book addresses many of the issues behind compulsive eating, and with lots of work on my part, it made me sane again (and 60 lbs lighter).

Imagine never having to worry about what you eat. Imagine being one of "those" people who can eat whatever they want whenever they want and never gain a pound -even lose weight! Don't you hate those people? What if you could be just like them? What if you knew their secret (that even they probably don't know)?

This book is the only "plan" you'll ever need to get off the dieting roller coaster and become a healthy eater. Skeptical? So was I. However, after a year of practicing Intuitive Eating, I am a COMPLETELY different person.

Be warned: it is not a quick fix. In fact, quick fixes are PRECISELY the reason we end up yo-yo dieting. Intuitive eating is not a diet at all. I know you've heard this before -even from actual "diets" like Weight Watchers -but, in fact, there is NO PLAN to intuitive eating. That's the whole point! You learn to eat what you want, what you need, and what feels good to your body. Your body already knows what's healthy for it and when you get rid of your emotional baggage about food, your shame, hidden eating, and all the other food behaviors you wish you could stop but feel enslaved to, you actually begin to enjoy food again!

Since I live in Southern California, I've had the privilege of consulting with Ms. Tribole (one of the authors) as a dietitian and nutritionist in my quest to overcome compulsive overeating. This book completely changed my life. I will be forever grateful to the authors.

Read Best Reviews of Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Here

I've read several comments that said that no one who reviewed this book mentioned that they had actually lost weight, and that therefore, this book is just giving overweight people permission to eat badly. So let me just clear that up right now. I read this book (an earlier edition) in 2000, and lost 40 pounds in the next 2 years. In the 4 years after that, I lost an additional 25. And...I've kept it off.

This book does give readers permission to eat what they want, but not to eat AS MUCH as they want. It teaches you to pay attention to your body, to your hunger and fullness signals, and to how certain foods make you feel. And once you've got that down, then it goes into nutrition.

My biggest problem was eating food just because it was there--and adding to that, the habit of ordering the largest size at restaurants. Once I learned to pay attention to what I was eating, and experimenting with smaller servings, the weight just dropped off. It may not work for everyone, but here is one woman who it did work for.

Let's face it, in this day and age it IS virtually impossible to eat 100% intuitively--we all have times when we eat for reasons other than hunger--many of us have jobs where we have set meal times, we are guests at other people's houses, etc. But even if you are able to learn to eat intuitively 50% of the time, it is an improvement.

So it goes without saying that I highly recommend this book. It's not conventional diet wisdom, but if that was what worked, we wouldn't have a multi-billion dollar weight loss industry, would we?

Want Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Discount?

About 5 years ago a friend tried to explain to me how she lost weight and had kept it off for so long. She told me that the only reason I overeat is because I restricted that food. I sort of understood what she was saying, but not really. She told me to practice listening to my body: what do i want to eat? am i full yet? etc.

Well, it took a few years of pondering her words, then I found this book, and finally it clicked!! WOW!! What a relief! I lost about 17 pounds two years ago and I have been the same weight since then. I eat WHATEVER I want to eat. There's not one food that is off-limits.

Here's the essence of the book: pick whatever your most favorite food is and allow yourself to eat however much you want. For me, it was Oreos. I could eat an entire package in one sitting. So, imagine that you go to the grocery store, you buy one dozen packages of Oreos. Everyday after today you receive another dozen packages of Oreos on your front step. Basically, you have a neverending supply of Oreos. How many are you actually going to eat? Maybe the first day you eat three packages. Guaranteed, by the end of the first week or two, if you are still eating them, you'll be eating only a couple Oreos at a time because you literally don't want to eat anymore.

Another food that was hard for me was french fries. Why do I eat all of my fries even when I'm stuffed? I realized it was because I knew in the back of my mind that I was going to try to avoid eating fries in the future, so I knew I better eat them all right now while I can!

If you tell yourself (and you have to really mean it, too) that you will go back and get more fries in an hour, or ten minutes, if you really want to, then you will never overeat! Why would you make yourself uncomfortable? If you are making yourself uncomfortable, you are doing it because you think you won't get to buy more of it later (either because of a self-imposed restriction or because you think you need to get your money's worth). It took lots of practice, but now anytime I go out to eat, I hardly have to remind myself that I will come back and buy more later if I want to. It's a true habit to not get uncomfortably full.

For those of you who feel like you need to get your money's worth in food, just remember this: if it goes in the trash, it's wasted and if it goes in your body, it's wasted. No matter what you do, it's wasted food. Your body doesn't need it or want it.

My relationship with food is now peaceful and calm. I no longer have any kind of anxiety about going out to dinner or going to a party where there's going to be food. I used to think about what I was going to eat for lunch for hours before lunch and think about dinner as soon as lunch was over. Now, when it's dinner time, I start thinking about dinner. My mind is at peace. And I have Oreos in my pantry :)

Sculpting Her Body Perfect - 3rd Edition

Sculpting Her Body Perfect - 3rd EditionFitness is my passion and I'm always reading books and articles about fitness. After a while, a lot of the information starts to sound the same. What a refreshing relief to have found this book! This is the first book that I can say that I really learned something from in years. It is divided into three parts; body conditioning, toning and shaping and advanced bodysculpting. While there is good info throughout the book, I found the advanced bodysculpting chapters to be of particular benefit. These chapters show how certain exercises can be combined to achieve optimal definition. The sample routines are great and demonstrate exactly how to incorporate the concepts into a total fitness program.

Overall, the book is very well written and easy to understand. It's a great reference that I'll use time and again.

The first half of the book is pretty basic info that I did not find as useful as someone might who is new to resistance training. The latter half of the book outlines how to sculpt your body. For each major muscle group the author classifies exercises into three categories depending on what parts of the muscles are being worked. By doing some or all the exercise he suggests, you can sculpt your body. What I find really useful is to know each of the categories so that I can ensure that I am working all parts of my back, for example. Now I can see that there may be times that I was doing two exercises that were working the same areas. When developing my program, I will refer to each category and make sure I have selected exercises that will cover all the categories.

The book does have some flaws. The author stresses at the beginning of the book that it is important to know what muscles you are working so that you can focus on them while exercising. But when he illustrates each exercise, he does not tell you which specific muscles you are working. Most other books will list the latin names of the muscles you are working, and some even illustrate the specific muscles, which is quite useful. He suggests a limited number of exercises for each category. Some of the exercises he mentions you can't find in the book (such as "spider curls"). When you look at the illustrated exercises, he does not tell you what category it is working. You have to keep referring back to an earlier page to figure that out. There are so many more exercises you could do for each of the categories but he does not mention them. It would have been nice if he had a chart of exercises that you could do without having to illustrate all of them. The book does not have an index either.

Conclusion: I don't think the book warrants the rave reviews it's received on amazon.com and could have been organized better, but half of the book has useful info. When I first started to read it I was going to return it because the first half of the book wasn't telling me anything I didn't know already. The body sculpting section has good info that I will incorporate into my program, so I have decided to keep the book.

Brad Schoenfeld does a wonderful job with this book. It is well thought out -and moves you from the beginning exercises to the advanced. I have been doing the beginner exercises for about 8 weeks now and have seen a tremendous improvement in my body -and my energy as well.

It is imperitive that you have access to a gym to work out. Or else you will have to have an extensive gym in your home.

I really learned a lot from this book -and have every intention to continue my work outs. I know that I can get to the advanced levels -but I am moving slowly so that I don't injure myself.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about starting a weight lifting program. I have learned more from this book than from the "personal trainers" at my gym.

Kudos to Brad!!

Over the past year, I had went through a very difficult period in my life and wound up gaining more than 20 pounds. I had always been thin and this really had a traumatic impact on me. Combined with all the other hardships that had happened, I was very depressed about my life.

Although my personal problems resolved, I still carried the extra weight. I tried several exercise programs and diets but none really worked and I felt frustrated about everything. I started to believe that I would never be able to get back to where I was.

Then, I was reading Fitness magazine and learned about Brad's book. I was skeptical but decided to give it a try. Upon reading it, I immediately got a good feeling. His words were really motivational and I realized all the reasons that my workouts never really worked. The program was easy to follow and the sample routines were extremely helpful.

After a little less than 3 months, I have followed the program religiously and my results have been nothing short of fantastic! I feel I'm in the best shape of my life. I am back to being a size 4, but my clothes fit even better than they did before. I have more energy and I have muscle tone in places that I didn't even know muscles existed! I am indebted to Brad and his message for helping me regain my self-image and feel great again.

Ok, this is a book for women that really want change and are willing to work for it. I feel very sorry for you women out there that say, "Why should we look like models, it's men like the author that make us feel ugly!" Having a healthy body does not mean you have to look like a model. What makes "you" happy is what is important. It make me happy to not jiggle... Since I have started using this book, about 1.5 months ago, I have defintion in my arms, shoulders, my back is broadening, and my thighs are showing signs of muslces. It makes me happy, and I am not doing it for anyone but me. I really like it because it really doesn't take a lot of time. It's hard and short. That's much better than wasting your time on a lot of non sense exercises getting you no where. I am 36 and I have lost 1/2 inch from my things, and 1 inch from my waist. Oh! Let me tell you to judge by the tape measure. I hve noticed I put on 2 pounds, but my measurements have gotten smaller.... GREAT BOOK! Lee
