Breaking the Food Seduction: The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings---And 7 Steps to End Them Natur

Breaking the Food Seduction: The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings---And 7 Steps to End Them NaturallyThe goal of Dr. Barnard is to steer everyone toward a vegan diet. If that is not your intention, best not to pick up this book. The changes are far-reaching, and radically different than the SAD (Standard American Diet).

I tried being a lacto-ovo vegetarian off and on throughout my life. The thought of giving up cheese was just too much to imagine. Additionally, having a husband whose first words about a meal were "where's the meat" made vegetarian life difficult. But if you experience a health crisis (cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure) it is amazing how quickly you can moderate your behavior.

My husband and I have been vegan for approximately 5 weeks now. We have never felt better in our lives. If you are holding on to meat, cheese and milk but don't feel good, this book will improve your health. Dr. Barnard also explains why it is so difficult to give up sugar, chocolate, cheese and meat. Apparently these items contain various addicting compounds. If someone had tried to tell me this 6 months ago I would have thought they were crazy. Now that I have adopted a vegan lifestyle I can say that my health has improved so much is such a short period of time that it is almost miraculous. Also, it is important to note that after 2 weeks my cravings for sugar, chocolate, cheese and meat are all but gone.

In the last 5 weeks my husband and I have seen dramatic improvements in our health. We have both each lost 12 pounds without being hungry or exercising more. My husband has decreased his total cholesterol from 177 to 113 (this happened in 24 days). He has been taken off this high blood pressure medication. I have not had a sinus headache in 5 weeks. Prior to becoming a vegan I had chronic sinusitis. My skin has a youthful glow (amazing for 43 year old woman). I also sleep better at night, and wake up more well rested.

If you don't feel as good as you did in your 20's and are willing to make a radical lifestyle change, I believe that this book will improve your health. I have also reviewed other books that advocate a vegan lifestyle if you are interested. Check out "Eat to Live" and "Stop the Inflammation Now".

I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to improve their health. Try it for a month; what do you have to lose? It is a small investment in time and money that could result in a dramatic improvement in the quality of your life.

Update: 4 August 2006

My husband and I are still following a mostly vegan (95%) lifestyle. It is amazing how simple it is once you decide it is just the way that you are going to live. We both continue to feel fabulous. My husband, at 52, is back to the weight he was when he graduated high school. He is even considering beginning to exercise. We have both lost over 20 pounds in a little under 4 months. I continue to highly recommend this book if you are looking to make a lifestyle change for health reasons.

What is the food seduction and why do you want to break it?

In the first part of this book, the author says that some foods have addictive qualities because they contain very small amounts of opiate like substances. Some people seem to be more susceptible to these substances and, in effect, become addicted to them. The foods the author identifies as having these substances are: sugar, chocolate, cheese, and meat. Unfortunately, these foods are commonly associated with causing obesity and all of the health problems related to obesity. So it is important to break the seductive quality these foods may have for you.

How do you do that? The author is skeptical of relying upon simple will power. The addictive like quality these foods have will eventually overcome your will power. Straining to deprive yourself of them leads to feelings of deprivation, guilt, hopelessness, and other negative emotions as you eventually succumb to your addictions again.

In the second part of the book, the author proposes a seven-step program to help you develop a food-craving-free body.

Step one. Start with a healthy breakfast. Oatmeal or other cereals/grains and fruits are an excellent choice. This recommendation sounds trite, but ignoring it can easily lead to cravings later in the day. The author tells stories of dieters who failed, yet were proud that they had successfully skipped meals during the day. Successful dieters identify healthy foods to eat, and then they make sure to eat enough of them during the day. If you don't consume enough calories from healthy foods to satisfy yourself, your cravings for fattening foods will surely overcome you. Hunger triggers cravings. Don't provoke it. Unlike diet plans that set the maximum number of calories you should consume per day, the author warns not to fall below the minimum necessary to avoid hunger. He says multiply your weight by 10 to get a rough guide for the minimum number of calories you need per day to satisfy you.

Step two. Eat foods that keep your blood sugar steady. The author believes in the glycemic index and recommends high fiber foods at the lower end of the index. The author is vegan and so the foods he recommends are beans, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

Step 3. The author recommends eating foods that boost the hormone leptin in your body. Leptin is a little known hormone that is thought to help control your appetite. The author says that eating a low-fat plant based diet and exercising will promote the effect of this hormone. I found this part of the author's argument circular and unconvincing. If you are eating a low-fat plant based diet and exercising you have already substantially achieved appetite control. Forget leptin.

Step 4. Identify craving cycles in your life and develop habits to avoid their effect. For some people, there are times of the day when they find themselves giving in to food cravings. For some women cravings may come on monthly cycles with their period. Many people have annual cycles as well, especially around the holiday period or during the winter. If you can identify your problem times, you can design strategies to minimize cravings at these times. The author suggests various ways for dealing with cycle cravings.

Step 5. Exercise, rest, and learn to let stress go. The author offers nothing new here, but provides many reminders of strategies and techniques that work for others.

Step 6. Call in the reinforcements. A common problem for dieters is that they try to convert others to do what they are doing. Most people, including your spouse, will not change their lifestyle based upon your exhortations. Instead, tell family members, friends, and co-workers what you are doing; ask only that they help you in avoiding the temptations that interfere with your program. Don't preach. This approach is more likely to get their support. Life is much easier when the people around you support what you are doing, even if they don't do it too. Enlist support; don't alienate people.

Step 7. Use extra motivators. The author identifies a whole range of motives for losing weight. Identify the ones important to you and focus on them. Don't be ashamed or shy about what is important to you. When you clearly identify why you want better health you will more likely stick with your program and achieve your goals.

In part three of the book the author discusses nutritional issues with a vegan diet. It may surprise some to learn that when you eat a low-fat plant based diet you normally need not limit daily calorie intake, portion size, or the total quantity of food you eat. Very little supplementation is recommended. He suggests a three-week starter plan to see if his program works for you.

Part four of the book contains a large selection of interesting and easy to fix recipes. This part of the book is outstanding. The author also discusses the content and uses of some foods in vegan cooking that are not commonly found in American cookery. You will find all you need to know about tofu, seitan, tempeh, tvp, tahini, and tamari among others.

The strong message the author gives you is not to fight or confront your food cravings directly. They are too powerful. Instead, use his non-confrontational strategies to avoid the control which food cravings exercise over you. The author is consistent in advocating a vegan diet to achieve your weight goals, but I didn't find his advocacy to be preachy or offensive.

I am hypoglycemic and historically prone to lots of yeast infections and bladder infections. After a mere three weeks of following the advice in this book, my sugar cravings are GONE. I can now walk through the candy aisle at the supermarket and genuinely have no desire for the candy. I can see the pint of Cherry Garcia beckoning through the grocery freezer door, and feel nothing. I could take it or leave it, and even if I took it home, I couldn't eat the whole thing at gunpoint. Honestly.

Now I know the biological reasons behind my cravings--why does my body demand chocolate before my period, for example? Barnard explains precisely how these foods can "hook" us. Armed with these new insights, for three weeks solid I ate very little fat, salt, and sugar, and tons of whole grains, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts, legumes, and water. I won't lie to you--the candy would have been much cheaper; fresh whole food costs a fortune. To avoid going broke in the produce aisle, I cut back drastically on meat and tried soy cheese and more bean-based meals. Who says you have to put a hunk of animal flesh in the oven every single night anyway? And it isn't just the sweets that I suddenly find distasteful--potato chips taste too salty and greasy to me now. It's as if somebody rewired my taste buds.

Read this book, and also the amazing book "Fit From Within," to forever alter your relationship with food. Even if you're skinny--and I'm 5'10" and 134 pounds, hardly overweight--if you ever feel that food controls you, rather than the other way around, you need to read this book. Don't let Barnard's hardcore vegan stance scare you off--if you reduce meat and dairy and quadruple fruits and veggies, and keep your trusty water bottle by your side, the magic will still work.

This book clearly explains in laymans terms the physiological effect certain foods have on the body. I had dabbled a bit trying to be a vegetarian for a few years but wasn't successful until I read Dr. Barnard's book. I started a vegan lifestyle on Aug 1, 2003 and the weight has just peeled away. I went from being exhausted and miserable to having enough energy to start a running program. I feel so good. And it has been so easy. I don't feel deprived, I don't crave bad foods anymore. My skin looks better. I've lost 15 pounds in six weeks and am still losing. It is nothing short of amazing and something I am positive I can sustain for the rest of my life. It also feels good to know I am making a small contribution to a healthier planet by not consuming animals. I plan on giving this book to my friends and family for Christmas.

One of the other reviews trashes Dr. Barnard's research. In fact, Dr. Barnard has excellent credentials, from George Washington University, where he is an adjunct professor. He has also done studies with faculty at Georgetown. A partial list of his scientific publications can be found on his website:

The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse: An All-Natural, At-Home Flush to Purify and Rejuvenate Yo

The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse: An All-Natural, At-Home Flush to Purify and Rejuvenate Your BodyI was a skeptic, even after doing a cleanse 6 months ago. My first cleanse produced little of nothing. I did feel better for a few days before feeling worse again. I firmly believe I was one of those whose bile ducts were so congested, the first cleanse did the "digging". Over the last few months, I developed a huge amount of pressure in my gallbladder and knew I was going to wind up having gallbladder surgery if something didn't give. So ... I decided to try the cleanse one more time.

WOW! I passed close to 200 stones this go around (it was completely painless, although the cleansing process does make you have diarrhea fair warning. It is only for a few hours, and the results are more than worth it). The stones ranged from bright green to tan, most floated, and were slightly larger than a sesame seed, on up to the size of my thumbnail. I had *zero* pain in passing these. I did experience some nausea during the night, but a couple of ginger capsules took care of it.

Since performing this 2nd cleanse over the weekend, my reflux has COMPLETELY resolved, I can sleep on my right side without having acid back up into my throat, and I am sleeping soundly through the night with nothing more than Valerian (for the first time ever). The pressure in my gallbladder/liver is so much improved, I feel like a new person. My energy level has gone up tremendously. I will be doing more cleanses in the coming months to completely rid my liver of any remaining gallstones.

As to those who contend the stones are actually "soap", I can offer a unique perspective on this. I am a soapmaker by trade, and olive oil does NOT produce a bright green soap. Soap made from olive oil becomes a lovely creamy white shade. The stones that are passed during this cleanse are just that gallstones. The malic acid in the apple juice helps to soften the stones allowing them to pass more readily. If what others are saying was true, then I should have passed "soap stones" during my first cleanse, and I didn't. The stones are NOT soap that theory is complete bunk.

Having said all of this, I don't agree with everything the author recommends, but this is my personal opinion. For myself, I take Stone Free tablets daily to help further soften stones. I did the apple juice only on the day of the cleanse. If I wasn't taking the Stone Free, I would drink the apple juice for at least a week prior to cleansing.

I also had to reduce the epsom salts to 1 teaspoon per cup of water the 1 tablespoon that is recommended is just way too harsh for my system. I did the epsom salts at the beginning of the cleanse, but I used Oxy-Powder capsules the next day. I just couldn't stand to drink another round of epsom salts at that point. The Oxy-Powder does a super job of cleansing the colon, and has not caused any cramping for me. Just be prepared to stay close to a bathroom if you use very much of it. It's important to get all of the gallstones out of the colon, and I'm confident the Oxy-Powder worked very well for me in that regard.

I kept a bottle of organic raw honey close by when drinking the epsom salts and also the oil/lemon juice mixture I had to use something to get the taste out of my mouth. The biggest thing to remember is once you start drinking the concoctions, don't stop. I used a LARGE straw and just drank as fast as I could. I also put a bit of orange juice in with the olive oil and lemon juice just to help the taste. Next time I might try grape juice instead.

Yes, the cleanse will cause diarrhea. You might even be nauseous or vomit (I have never vomited doing this, but I rarely do anyway). The whole purpose of a cleanse is to remove toxic junk from your system. I think most of the negative reviews on this are because people don't understand the nature of a cleanse in general. For myself, I would prefer to keep the gallbladder I was born with. Our ancestors have used cleanses for thousands of years, but a lot of this knowledge has been lost in our modern "take a pill or take it out" society. The cleanse sounds unconventional by modern standards, but for me it worked. If there were no other alternative, I would have my gallbladder taken out I was almost to that point. But I am walking proof that the cleanse has improved my health for the better.

UPDATE December 2011

I had an ultrasound in March of this year on the recommendation of my family doctor, just to ensure I didn't have gallstones (I had a stomach ulcer caused by stress and H. pylori). The ultrasound showed NO GALLSTONES, which didn't surprise me at all after having done the cleanse several times. Just wanted to add this to my original review supporting that the cleanse does indeed work.

I completed my first flush last weekend and was pretty much amazed with the results. I am a 38 year old fit and healthy female, I eat mostly organic whole foods and have for the better part of the last 15 years. I do not have any major health concerns and don't ever plan on having any.

For the six days leading up to the flush I ate a completely vegan diet and drank the apple juice, which, gave me a bit of a headache since I'm not used to that much sugar. I felt a little bit sluggish all week because I usually eat lean animal protein with every meal about 5x per day, so eating vegan was quite a change for me but nothing I couldn't handle.

On the sixth day (Friday) I drank my apple juice in the morning as suggested and fasted for the rest of the day. At 4pm I went in for colon hydrotherapy and at 6pm I drank my first serving of epsom salts, which, by the way, does not taste very good at all but, again, it is worth it. At 7pm I started to feel like the flu truck had run me over and had a fever of sorts. By 8pm it was time to drink the second serving of epsom salts, it was a struggle but I got it down thanks to the straw. Within 5 minutes of drinking the second serving of epsom salts I was in the bathroom having a very watery bowel movement that almost instantly made my flu-like symptoms go away and after that I felt much better. At 10pm I drank the olive oil/grapefruit juice concoction and laid down immediately. Drinking the olive oil was actually not bad at all, I do suggest the straw for this as well as the epsom salts, it's a must. Within a few minutes of drinking the olive oil I felt something that I can only describe as "heat" surrounding my liver and then the gurgling started. I didn't feel incredibly ill but I did feel a bit of discomfort. At about 12am I had my first BM which produced about 15 bright green stones of various sizes. I was shocked, really. I continued to pass stones throughout the night and had a bout of "restless leg syndrom" not sure what that was about. I got up at 6am (Saturday) and drank my third serving of epsom salts. Passed many more stones. At 8am I drank the last serving of epsom salts. Passed many more stones. At 10am I drank 12oz of fresh squeezed orange juice (yum). Passed more stones...This went on for all of Saturday and Sunday morning. I will say this, my bum hurt like nothing I've ever experienced in my life and the thought of going in for the post-flush colon hydrotherapy made me want to cry, nonetheless, I did it. I had much discomfort during this colon hydrotherapy session but it was over in 45 minutes and after that I felt like a new human.

The three top things I noticed immediately:

1. My sleep was deep and restful, something I have never experienced.

2. My eyesight became crisp and clear.

3. My stomach felt calm and peaceful for the first time in my life.

All in all I would say I passed 200+ stones all shades of green to tan and the size of a piece of rice to the size of a hazelnut. I did not experience any pain passing any of the stones. My personal experience has been a good one, and, having done my first flush I am looking forward to the next one in 4 weeks. I would suggest this protocol to anyone wanting to optimize their health.

This is one of the most awakening books I have ever read. Andreas explains bodily functions is plain simple English. He explains medicines short comings such as their inability to detect gall stones and how they tell you there is a problem only after a blood test indicates liver damage due to the number of stones getting far out of control. He gives great insight for understanding your body lowering your dependency on your doctor who only has the "cut it out" solution.

I did the flush and passed at least 100 pea size gull stones. A day later, I felt 10 years younger and my mental clarity was significantly improved.

Buy this book before it is banned by the medical mafia. If you have had your gall bladder removed, it is an absolute must. He explains how to compensate for the loss and how your gall bladder is important.

I cannot explain fully how empowered I feel with regard to my health management after reading this book and The Timeless Way to Health and Rejuvenation.

Having seen several members of my family suffer at the hands of inadequate information offered by allopathic/orthodox doctors in the UK (maybe my father would still be here had he known about Andreas Mortiz) I chose to look for alternative ways to bring my system back into balance. At my first doctor's appointment I was offered stomach ulcer medication for my presenting symptoms which I refused, suggesting to the doctor that an ultrasound might be in order based on the family history I had given. It was then classed as a clear-cut case of gallstones by a consultant who wanted to book my theatre slot there and then. An ultrasound scan (which I insisted on before taking any surgical action)revealed no presence of gallstones but a spleen tumour instead!

I went looking for a way to handle my health issues as naturally as possible. With a seven year old that I teach at home I cannot afford to be in hospital. I found a colon therapist and discovered my colon was seriously congested. I cannot impress on you how important it is to get it clean first. (How come the doctor didn't start with a colon cleanse? A simple palpation would have revealed its state.)

So far I have completed two flushes, producing about 3 tablespoons of both gallstones (wonder where those were hiding??) and liver stones.

My sister has a gall bladder full of stones and is following the same method. She is the proud owner of a jar containing a selection of stones produced from her first flush. She is very excited about the next flush and looks fabulous. Her skin is improving, weight is dropping of nicely (as is mine)and her energy soaring.

Mortiz has a lot of support to offer on all levels; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Take out of his books that which you feel drawn to but, as emphasized by Moritz, you must follow the Liver flush procedure to the letter including making certain your colon is clear don't just assume it is.

I don't deny the accident and emergency services in the UK do a great job as do all the caring nurses and doctors. Their hearts are in the right place but the information being made available during their training is desperately lacking in areas. I want to see the medical establishment providing facilities to ensure a clean colon, liver and kidneys of every patient. They could be amazed at how little illness there might be left to treat. But then that won't benefit the drugs companies who I believe feed the doctors much of the information they use in the first place. Mmmm.... is it my cynical mind or do I smell something un

Absolutely fantastic information. I did the cleanse 4 times and it saved my life! Reset all my OTHER medical issues that supposedly had nothing to do with the liver. All my liver tests were normal and Western medicine had no clue what was wrong. Did this an passed HUNDREDS of stones each time. Thanks Andreas for this life-saving info.

Total Yoga: A Step-By-Step Guide to Yoga at Home for Everybody

Total Yoga: A Step-By-Step Guide to Yoga at Home for EverybodyThis is my one of my favorite yoga books... it explains about lines of energy, chakras, the different types of yoga and Hatha Yoga, and of course, is full of some basic poses. It also includes some sequences for different occasions, included the classic Sun Salute. The nice thing about this book is that it also has clearly explained breathing exersizes, and what the do. It also has a nice intro to meditation, and includes severla different meditatoin techniques to introduce you to this idea. Of course, if you don't take classes, you SHOULD start taking them, and even if you do, this book will help you with your own at home rutine. Overall, a good little book.

I am a Yoga teacher, and I recommend this book for home practice. The point of Yoga is to turn inward, and really feel what your body is doing, and what your body needs. In classes, we tend to get competitive, which really hinders our practice. This book is a great way to learn poses to do at home, and without having someone there yapping at you the entire time, you tend to really FEEL the poses. I think classes are important to learn postures and how the corrected posture feels, but I encourage people to have a home practice as well. This book is wonderful.... big pictures makes it easy to use while practicing, and a few different series of Asana's in the back help guide you through an at home class. The basic meditation helps people start to understand how to quiet the mind, and the Chakra info is wonderful! Namaste!

When I bought this yoga book, I didn't have much expectations other than to learn the various poses properly. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a delightful yoga book. It is reader friendly and, while aimed at those who have no background on yoga, it does not dumb down the principles of yoga at all. It explains in a nonsensical and in a neutral tone what yoga is and the instructions on the poses are clear. It has suggested sample practices to help guide the reader in eventually building their own practice. I love the huge photos to supplement the instructions. Best of all, while it is larger than most books (hence the larger photos), it is not too thick or heavy for me to carry around. I've even brought it to ski resorts so I can practice.

TY is a super book for anyone interested in the many facets of yoga. Tara Fraser does a good job of including information on history, texts, chakras, diet, asanas and more, without becoming long-winded. She efficiently draws out the foundational material and sculpts a great info-guide to yoga. The asana depictions are clear and easy to follow, and she gives modifications for beginners/experts. Tara also includes some good partner-poses as well. It's a large book but lays flat for easy reference while practicing. I've used this book more than any of the several others I own. While TY is not written for a guru, it's a great book for beginners and intermediates.

A History of Costume (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

A History of CostumeAmazing that the original author's name is listed without the names of the editor and translator.

Author Carl Kohler died in 1876 near Nurnberg, Germany. His paintings and writings, upon which this particular reprint of a compilation are based, were previously published, intact, in German under the names "Die Trachten der Volker in Bild und Schnitt" and "Die Entwicklung der Tracht in Deutschland wahrend des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit", both in the late 1870s.

Emma Von Sichart, the editor of this publication, took it upon herself in the early 1920s to gather up Kohler's sketches, drawings, paintings, and writings, and put them together in a new book. During the process, she deleted almost all of Kohler's introductory or period descriptive writings, and replaced those words with either her own, or Max von Boehn's, another historian.

In addition, Emma Von Sichart added new, contemporary photographs and sketches to bring Kohler's work "up to date", at least as far as the very late 1920s. In many places she eliminated or changed Kohler's measurements, or interpretations of the cut of clothing, simply to make the work more "accessible" to the seamstress, costumer, or interested reader of the early 20th century.

Further, in order to bring the publication to English speaking markets, Emma Von Sichart's writing was translated by Alexander K. Dallas, M.A., which might have further changed the original content.

So, before we blame Kohler, who, in his time, was very highly regarded as a serious historian and quite the expert in period clothing, styles, customs, etc., we must first look to the likelihood of errors created by the editor Emma Von Sichart, and the translation errors of Alexander K. Dallas.

If by any chance you have the original German publications of the late 1870s, you do indeed have a spectacular rare treat of period costume history.

Just keep in mind that this particular book is a facsimile reprint of a translation of a heavily edited and recompiled selection of at least two originals.

The text of this book is dry, but very informative. There are many sketched and black and white illustrations, but not enough to fully support the text. (I recommend Boucher's 20,000 Years of Fashion as a companion). The patterns give a better idea of the construction of the clothes, but they are approximations and no tips are given for making your own. Make sure you refer to other sources before using his patterns. This book is most useful for its detailed descriptions of specific periods, including not just the cut and style of the period, but also material, shoes, hairstyles, accessories, and who wore what and how and on what occasions.

This is a decent overview of costume history from the Ancients to the mid 19th century with authentic resources (statues, portraits, extant costumes, pictures) as well as some original illustrations (be cautious with those and cross-reference, especially with women's garments and periods where the shapes are linear and the sides and bust are flattened--Kohler tends to round things out and represent the bust in a more rounded, typically 1860's style). It also contains a few patterns that are minimally useful (lack or proportion or instruction, etc.) except to understand the anatomy of the garments and how the pieces might fit together. No color pictures, but enough illustrations and primary resources to contribute to an overall sense of a period in costume history.

The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care

The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's CareThis past semester, my seminary (Christian Theological Seminary) was honoured to host Virginia and Wayne Bell as they led a conference on Spirituality and Aging. As we approach a time in which the issues of aging will take increasing prominence, as the baby-boomers reach a collectively-older age than any generation in history has reached, the issues surrounding health care for the elderly are of primary importance, and part of that health is mental (which includes spiritual) health. The Bells have spent much time investigating and helping in the area of Alzheimer's, a disease that affects mind, body and spirit. Virginia Bell, together with a colleague, David Troxel, collaborated on two books (one of which is the the subject of this review) presenting an innovative way for care of those with Alzheimer's: `The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care'.

Virginia Bell, MSW, is currently Program Consultant with the Lexington/Bluegrass Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She is a graduate of Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky, and has lectured widely at national and international conference. Her co-author, David Troxel, works with the Santa Barbara chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

`"The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care" reflects a growing optimism in the field of Alzheimer's care that much can be done to improve the lives of people with the disease and to transform caregiving from a terrible burden to care that is manageable. This book represents the development of the first comprehensive model of care, which is easy to understand and learn.'

At the start of the book, Bell and Troxel describe the various experiences of those with Alzheimer's. By looking at the depression, confusion, and detachment that those with Alzheimer's experience, the caregiver gains a greater understanding and compassion for those suffering. Perhaps the most important key insight comes from a nurse and teacher, Rebecca, who began to experience symptoms of Alzheimer's at age 59.

`I dislike social workers, nurses and friends who do not treat me as a real person.'

Despite her slowly declining cognitive abilities, she is still able to sense that people are regarding her differently, as a patient, as an object, as a 'third person' rather than a real person.

Persons with Alzheimer's experience loss, sadness, confusion, isolation and loneliness, fear, frustration, anxiety, paranoia, anger, and embarrassment. The Best Friends model takes all of these into account as a normal part of everyone's life.

The second chapter gives a basic overview of Alzheimer's, giving symptoms, diagnosis, services, caregiving issues, and research news. The Best Friends model requires no specialised medical or scientific knowledge -an appendix is included in the book for those who wish to pursue those topics in more detail.

The following chapters develop the aspects of care along the Best Friends model. This requires first assessing the strengths and abilities of the person receiving care (and this may require a daily update). An understanding of what persons with Alzheimer's may require is included as an `Alzheimer's Disease Bill of Rights'. These are important, and often overlooked, so I shall reprint them here:

Every person diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder deserves the following rights:

To be informed of one's diagnosis

To have appropriate, ongoing medical care

To be productive in work and play for as long as possible

To be treated like an adult, not like a child

To have expressed feelings taken seriously

To be free from psychotropic medications, if possible

To live in a safe, structured, and predictable environment

To enjoy meaningful activities that fill each day

To be outdoors on a regular basis

To have physical contact, including hugging, caressing, and hand-holding

To be with individuals who know one's life story, including cultural and religious traditions

To be cared for by individuals who are well trained in dementia care

A key point to being a Best Friend is that the caregiver becomes a memory aid to the person -friends know each others' histories. Being reminded of past accomplishments, family connections, personal beliefs and traditions helps tremendously. It gets them involved in their own lives again.

Friends do many things: they share history, they do things together, they communicate, they build self-esteem, they laugh often, they work at the relationship, and they are equals. These carry over as key concepts in the Best Friends model. Bell and Troxel go into some detail about how to handle situations for the full-time caregiver, the volunteer, and for those who visit persons with Alzheimer's in care. Specific situations and general principles are presented in a clear, intelligible manner with great application potential.

An important part of the process of understanding and dealing with those with Alzheimer's is to understand oneself. Thus, there is a section on Being One's Own Best Friend. How do we react and respond? Do we give ourselves enough care? How can we care for others if we do not care for ourselves? How do we respect the needs and desires of those we care for while recognising and respecting our own needs? These are important questions, and Bell and Troxel address it by illustrating the relationship between Rebecca and Jo, her Best Friend.

`Because any of us can be touched by Alzheimer's disease, can have bad things happen to us, our friends, or our families, the ultimate message the authors wish to convey is this: We should treat everyone important to us as we would our own Best Friend.'

Seeing the Helping Hands Adult Day Care program, which is the fruit of the philosophy of this work, was a life changing event for me. The caring and love shown by the staff of Helping Hands are living testiment to the dedication of workers to improve the quality of life for clients affected by the devastation of Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias. If all facilities, both assisted living and nursing homes, truly invested in this approach, life would indeed be different for the persons affected by this disease and their caregivers. A definite must for those struggling with the problems of caregiving those with Alzheimer's disease.

This is a really great text outlining a different slant on how to care for the Alzheimers disorder. I love the concept utilized in this book, and have seen it at work in a local Adult Day-Services center. As a retired nursing professional I would like to see more use of this type of therapeutic care for the mentally impaired. I hope that the book will help to educate those who care for the aged, and AD persons. The families of those patients could be helped in their respite care.

The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier YOU!

The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier YOU!i purchased this item for kindle and much of it is unreadable because it is in charts that you cannot read and cannot change the size of (i have 20/20 vision) Also i just tried to return it in order to buy the print copy and not be out the 14 dollars but it turns out that you cannot return digital content on amazon. Its only 14 dollars but i am really bummed i cant use the book because i cant see any of the recommended exercises---DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK especially if it is a kindle program on your phone

Very comprehensive overview of hundreds of exercises that can be done using gym equipment, home equipment (stability balls, dumbbells, etc.), and/or no equipment. The photos detailing each exercise are in full color and the accompanying explanations are detailed, specific, and easy to follow.

The book is broken down into chapters dedicated to body parts: Chest, Back, Shoulders, Arms, Quadriceps & Calves, Glutes & Hamstrings, Core, as well as chapters for Total Body and Warmup Exercises. There is also a chapter on how to put various exercises together for specific-goal workouts (e.g. "The Get Your Body Back Workout", "The Skinny Jeans Workout", "The Bikini-Ready Workout", "The Best Sports Workout", "The Best Three-Exercise Workouts"). In addition, there are chapters dedicated to Nutrition, Cardio Workouts, the importance of Weights, etc.

All in all, this is an extremely comprehensive book that is not at all about gimmicks or shortcuts but is simply well researched and well presented. It will literally replace several books I've bought on this subject in past years. I'm not easily impressed by books on this subject and yet I'm extremely impressed by this compilation. Well done Adam Campbell and contributors!

I bought this book as I work for group exercise at my campus rec center; I was hoping it would give me some ideas for new moves/exercises for my class routines. It does have lots of exercises... but it'll spend several pages with the same exercise just adding different equipment/positions: i.e., squats with weights, squats w/o weights, squats in wide stance, squats in mid stance, etc... each that cover the span of two pages and it counts each as a new exercise. It's great for beginners to sculpting and includes a ton of overview, but not many safety details or progressions (which is essential for any exercises!!!). Likewise, it assumes you have all kinds of equipment: weights, barbell, step/bench, etc., so half the book is useless if you're trying to do this stuff at home. The workout plans in the back of the book are great, again for beginners, but no one should ever really do some of these things without first having gone to a professional to make sure they're doing it properly... overall, it wasn't a waste of a purchase and it's a well organized book, just underwhelming for the very boastful title!

Purchased to do exercise and keep in shape on Kindle. Would Not recommend for the Kindle. Very difficult to follow with chapters and directions. Diagrams very small. Constantly changing font. Certain items even enlarged needed a magnifier to read.

The book is excellent for having colorful detailed pictures of 619 varying forms of exercise movements using weight or strength training. My only issue with the book is that the Women's version is nearly identical to the Men's version. I bought both, one for me and the other for my husband, thinking it would offer something different, because a woman's body is different than a man's and does not lose weight or build muscle at the same degree. I was sadly disappointed. Buying both is a waste of money. The information is exactly the same as well as the exercises, it also has the EXACT amount of pages in each book.

The diet plan section was too brief and did not go into enough detail. The cardio section was dismal at best. Some of the nutritional information was iffy, like High Fructose Corn Syrup being nutritional similiar to sugar, that's a crock. Look up HFCS and find out how they manufacture it. Any synthetic food should be limited, but natural is better thank synthetic, and as the book states both should be limited. But it didn't say any of the harmful effects that HCFS has on your liver and how it's works harder trying to process HFCS. My theory, if God didn't grow it, don't eat it.

What I did like was the exercises, I like how the sections were divided and how it went into detail describing the muscles being worked for that section and why it is important to work that particular muscle group. It's very easy to navigate through and it has exercises to perform for home or for the gym.

I think the price is too high for what they deliver, but if you can find it cheaper than the listed retail price which is 24.99 plus shipping which is nearly $4, I say go for it. But it's definitely not worth 28.00.

I will be sending this book back and keeping the Men's Big Book for my husband.
