S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-To-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and Coll

S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-To-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and CollegeThere are so many things to recommend this book aimed at youth 16 22 (but containing info valuable to a much wider age range) that it's difficult to know where to begin. S.E.X. contains a lot of the information you find in guides aimed at a young readership anatomy lessons, safer sex guidelines, a breakdown of birth control options, definitions of various sexual activities and infections. The difference here is Heather Corinna's (who as the founder of the world's most awesome sex ed site, Scarleteen, has seen and heard it all) dedication to tugging the rest of society closer to her dream of a world where everyone is "healthy, happy and whole in themselves and their sexuality: in body, heart, and mind."

To that end the book is truly inclusive. In a section on sexual identity Corinna points out that "this isn't the gay chapter" and indeed the book doesn't assume a heterosexual default the way many do or root itself in traditional gender roles. Nor does it assume that sex is better when connected with love or marriage. The emphasis is unfailingly on communication, being as safe as possible, respecting your own and others' boundaries and fitting sex into the rest of your life in a healthy and enjoyable way.

The slant seems so balanced and logical that it's a wonder society at large is in such a mess when it comes to sex and sexuality. But popular culture with its constant projection of a hyper-sexuality which is unvarying and prescriptive (dictating what sort of bodies we should have, the kinds of activities we should be engaging in and who should be performing them and how) would seem to be the enemy of this logic. To counter these negative messages and arrive at a healthy body image, Heather suggests reducing TV watching and binning your fashion magazines, noticing the diversity around you in your everyday life, focusing on things other than appearance and concentrating on physical activities you enjoy (whether that be team sports, canoeing, whatever).

Of course there's a lot of sex in this book and sexual activities are catalogued along with their pregnancy and STI risk. You'll learn that the idea that female virgins are supposed to be "tight" is pure myth. "A woman having first intercourse very well might be tight, but that is likely due more to nervousness, fear, and anxiety than it is to whether or not she has had partnered sex before." If a woman's relaxed, aroused and lubricated enough with a patient partner first-time sex doesn't need to be painful. The idea of premature ejaculation is "a bit bogus" too. There's no "minimum time that is acceptable for erection" and sexual activity can continue in other ways afterwards. There's no reason that all (or any) of the fun has to spring from penetration.

Unfortunately, not at all sex is consensual and S.E.X. also discusses healing from abuse and rape. "One-half of all rape victims are raped between the ages of fourteen and seventeen." Roughly a third of "high-school and college students has experienced sexual, physical, verbal, or emotional violence in dating relationships."

As adults, we don't do near enough honest talking about these issues. How can we expect young people to deal with the rampant sexual assumptions and expectations, misinformation and pressure created by living in a society that on the one hand tells them sex is something serious and special to save for later while simultaneously drowning them in images that promote the very opposite?

For starters we could buy them this book. If everyone read, digested and lived by the philosophies espoused in S.E.X. our sexual problems would be a thing of the past.

Fabulous book. I just gave copies to my sons, 14 and 18, and I'm convinced it's the only sex education book they will need from now well into their 20s.

I gave each of them a copy along with this note:

"Mom and I are giving you this book, and the notes here, so that you have a great source of factual information about sex and relationships all in one place.

"We know you have had quite a bit of "sex ed" already at school, but there is always more to learn, and after looking around, we think this is one of the best resources. It goes well beyond what school teaching offers, and does a better job than I could even in hours of conversation. It's not easy for parents to talk to kids about sex, so this book at least gets the right information out to you and then opens the door for questions and discussion, whenever you want. I have been married once before and was in various other relationships, so I know a lot about this stuff and I want you to know I am totally open to questions and discussion, any time.

"Mom and I like this book because it's really straightforward and very complete, and also free of any judgmental or moralistic viewpoints. Mom and I both think that's the best approach. You have both been raised to be good and moral persons, so you will use your own "gut" (and advice from us, whenever you want it), to choose what you think is right for yourself and the people close to you.

"Giving you this book is not a substitute for talking about these issues whenever we want or need to. In the meantime, here are some tips on sections that we think you should definitely read ..."

From there I went on to highlight the "must read" sections (safe sex, contraception, consent, etc) and told them we would talk about these.

It's a great book and offers comprehensive information in a matter-of-fact, adult manner and in a format that's easy to flip through to find what you're looking for.

Growing up with a mother who volunteered as a counselor for Planned Parenthood, you'd think I would have had a good education in the area of sexuality but far from it, really the only thing I heard about was birth control. Sexuality is such a huge part of every human being though, it's amazing that we leave the "education" to pop culture. Now the parent of 3 teenaged daughters, I was absolutely thrilled to get a copy of this book. I plan on getting a couple MORE copies, since I haven't been able to pry it from my middle daughter's hands since giving it to her.

As many previous reviewers have mentioned, the book covers everything not just STIs and birth control, but the psychological and emotional ramifications of becoming sexually active as well. It's thoughtful and not at all condescending, and I have to wonder how much better the world might be if kids had THIS as their sex education instead of music videos.

Corinna is fearless when it comes to discussing the gamut of topics, so as a parent I had to be fearless as well, knowing in my heart and head that accurate information is the best gift I could give my daughters.

Talking about sex is hard. Talking about sex with your teen is nearly impossible, if you ask me. After months of struggling through and trying to follow the advice of inserting "the talk" into normal conversation or using songs as springboards for discussion, I finally took a friend's advice and ordered this book.

It has been a great investment. Not only does Corinna have chapters on just about everything you can imagine--from homosexuality to sexual abuse to friends with benefits to Internet dating to fisting--she gives the information factually and in a way that isn't embarrassing. She also tells how to be safe every step of the way, both emotionally and physically.

I like that my daughter can look up answers on her own and that she and I can use the book to discuss various topics. I also like that the book has information for years to come. It's definitely got a more liberal take on things, but then this is a very different world we live in. As long as you have a loving relationship with your teen, then the book will provide a wealth of helpful information that can be balanced with discussions at home about what he or she is comfortable with and what your personal feelings are. Lack of knowledge is not better in these situations and neither is forbidding kids to do things.

I highly recommend this book and consider it an important sex ed tool.

Many years ago, when I started working as a moderator on a teen debate site, the person whose job I was taking over told me to direct all sex-ed related queries to a site called Scarleteen.com, because they would answer the questions better than we ever could. I myself did not check out that site until about a year and a half ago, and when I did, I regretted not having visited in my teens: The site offered everything I was was was desperately looking for but could not find honest, down-to-earth, realistic advice on all things concerning sex, sexuality, birth control, safety and relationships.

This miracle-site is the brainchild of one Heather Corinna, sex-educator extraordinaire. And now Heather has finally managed to publish the sex-ed guide to end all guides. Like her site, the book is open, honest and straight-forward. It answers all questions without skirting truths or hiding facts. It's body-positive and inclusive, and it is always respectful and never judgemental. In short, this book is the companion you want to have with you during your teen years, and well beyond.

It you want to do yourself or a teen in your life a favour, buy this book.

Halfway Home

Halfway HomeRonan's first academic music teacher suggested that he learn a certain song for a national competition even though he wasn't quite ready for that song yet. Ronan not only agreed but confidently declared that she would see him win the Tenor section of the competition! Veronica Dunn replied, "There's no holding you back."

I felt that her remark was just right to serve as a very incisive expression of Ronan's chief character trait as expressed in his autobiography. Seemingly he was born with extraordinary portions of confidence, determination, and drive--a fortunate circumstance since he was also born with a physical disability, focamelia, that kept him from fulfilling his exceeding drive for physical freedom and independence. Speaking of his first singing performance which occurred when he was a boy, at Christmastime, (his first publicly performed song being, just for the record, "Mary's Boy Child"), Ronan says "As I stepped from that small stage onto myriad and greater stages in my life, I would carry with me both the love from the crowd and my own insatiable hunger to move freely and in my own way out into the world."

Despite some setbacks, and often while enduring an amazing amount of physical pain, he went forth into the world to become a winner in the field of Paralympic sport where he broke 14 world records and won 18 gold medals; he worked for a time in the prosthetics industry where he helped improve the quality of prosthetics; he became a medical doctor with special interests in various fields; and, of course, he eventually decided that his real vocation was singing. From a young age his urge to sing gave him pleasure in a way that was akin to his general underlying urge to push through to physical freedom by whatever means; and so just as he pushed himself by means of walking, bicycling, running, and horseback riding, he also worked at exercising his voice--even before he knew his vocation was singing. (Later, during his university studies, he exercised his voice a lot in pubs where I wouldn't wonder that he achieved the world's record for greatest number of times singing "Danny Boy." And probably, ten years now since this edition of his autobiography first came out, judging from the frequent joy he took before, I'd guess that he still tends to enjoy exercising in pubs whenever he can...)

Not until about two-thirds of the way through his book does Ronan begin to describe his musical vocation. It did seem to me that the narrative at that point took on a greater energy and vitality. Nevertheless, I found the entire book to be lively and interesting, sometimes outright funny. There are chapters about his childhood and about his school experiences; chapters about his career in prosthetics and in medicine; there is the story about how her served in New York at the time of the 9/11 tragedy for America. He tells incidents about his love affairs; incidents about his delighted experiences with horses; incidents about good friends; and more. Throughout his story, he mentions numerous occasions when he sent up prayers for help in challenging circumstances, and he says God always responded and helped him at those time.

This is very much a book about Ronan's family life, the particular closeness of his relationships with his Mom and Dad and his brother and sister, Tom and Fiona. His Dad proved always an especially supportive person for him. Although he went through a time of finding his Mom's personality irritating, he appreciated her determination and drive, which he surely seems to have inherited. From his birth, she was determined that Ronan would someday walk. In retrospect, he came to appreciate better some of his mother's motives.

I think the book makes a good companion-piece for the album of songs entitled "Ronan," for you do see here how some of the songs in that album express aspects of his life history and his character. In the book, Ronan sometimes uses the expression "over the moon" to describe his feelings of joyful excitement about certain accomplishments and I was reminded of the album song entitled "Ready to Fly." Also on that album one finds the songs he wrote about his Mom and Dad.

Reading about Ronan's singing career and his encounters with outstanding singers was really the crowning enjoyment for me of the book. And anyone who is a singer could surely glean some useful tips and advice here.

In one of his early competitions, although he didn't demonstrate great technical advancement, Ronan was chosen the winner because the judge valued his singing as having "heart" and "showing greatest potential." Again, in that designation by a maestro, the word "heart" seems to me to be an incisive, exactly right recognition of one of Ronan Tynan's most outstanding traits as a singer.

Hopefully, appreciators of Tynan will have the pleasure of reading the other half of his journey "home" someday.

The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at Home (Stonesong Press Books

The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at HomeLiving in a newly incorporated city, this book has spurred my interest into finding out what programs my community offers and what, if any, master energy plan is set for my city's future. I love the benefit of the plentiful pages of resources that may help jump-start a green energy plan/program for individuals, organizations, cities, and so forth.

Being that my city has mostly new homes that are Energy Star construction compliant, it would seem that we were doing all we can do. However, I learned through this guide about multiple other ways my family can come close to a zero-waste family and ways I can teach my children how to better treat the earth on which we live.

I'm also excited to start a green-type fundraising effort for my kids' schools and I think the parents, faculty, and students will be able to get just as excited!

I love the informative charts that explain how to dispose of differing types of waste appropriately. I also love the easy-to-understand descriptions of those little recycle symbols and numbers. They are really great references for my family's recycling program.

What is most helpful is that the author, Terra Wellington, obviously has experiences with her own family with the things she has written about. That makes my family's "green goals" seem attainable and makes me excited to see the results of our efforts. -by Natasha Call, Utah

This book is so jam-packed with current, useful information! I don't subscribe to the notion that humans are causing all of the earth's climate and atmospheric changes, however I have nothing against changing some of my habits to help reduce the need for unnessary energy and wastefulness in general. Some of the information in this book was mind-boggling Terra has written a very informative guide on how to trade-in old habits that have a negative impact on the earth for techniques that will reduce wasted time, energy and resources. This book is seriously in my purse at all times now! I use it while shopping, as she has done all the research for me!

Terra's charts and explainations about rating systems (found on product labels) are priceless! I now feel confident that I can make informed choices while shopping for things I took for granted in the past, really, because I didn't know any better. Now I do! I am now armed with the knowledge of how to save money AND help preserve the earth's resources and I can feel confident that I am teaching my children to care about this beautiful earth we are all blessed to live on. Thank you Terra! I will be giving copies to my close friends for their birthdays this year. Really, I feel much better prepared and much less overwhelmed with the "how-to's" and I know my friends will feel the same way.

"The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at Home (Stonesong Press Books)" has a wealth of information in it. The book was written in a way that holds the reader's attention and makes one want to continue reading long into the night. I enjoyed the "humor" throughout the book. It kept the subject matter from becoming "too dry". Our Earth is delicate and by incorporating the ideas in the book into my everyday life, I feel that I am doing my part to help keep our planet green. There were a number of things in the book that I have not ever considered would make a difference. I also was elated to find many websites listed that have proven very useful to me and to my family. I plan to include this book in my children's Christmas stockings this year...may even add to some other's gifts.

Thank you, Terra Wellington, for providing The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green.

Want The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at Home (Stonesong Press Books Discount?

As with all the great books out there for converting your lifestyle to a greener one, Growing Your Family Green gives great steps for the beginners and those willing to take bigger steps. It provides clear instructions, helpful websites, and a great resource list in the back. Suggestions range from cleaning at home to greener shopping and traveling. Most of the information is not new, certainly. But I don't think the intended audience is one that is ready for composting toilets and going vegan.

This book is unique because it considers its audience very well. The audience is clearly middle-class moms-women with one or more kids and (probably) a man in the house. There are constant suggestions about how to involve the whole family into going green, which is great because, in my household, right now that means knowing the difference between the trash can and the recycling bin!

This book not only recommends switching from traditional bulbs to Compact Fluorescent (which anyone concerned with going green generally does as a first move anyways), it includes a chart explaining what kind of bulbs should go into which room and for which purpose and how to clean up one of these bulbs when they shatter-which most moms will have to do at some point or another.

This would be a great gift for Mother's Day or Earth Day and is a good guide for a busy mom who wants to quickly find the eco-info she is looking for.

Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for Acne

Clear Skin: Organic Action Plan for AcneYou won't regret getting this book!

Clear Skin: Organic Guide for Acne is very well-organized, easy to read, and wonderfully educational. It doesn't aim to convert you into organic junkie, this "sandals-and-granola" type which I personally respect but hardly relate to. Organic here, in my opinion, means gentle, natural approach to improving our oh-so-problem skin from inside out.

The information Gabriel presents includes the most recent research. She discusses the merits and myths of traditional acne treatments and offers organic and all natural skin care products that are suitable for many skin types.

I got this book when I read two other books (Acne Cure and Unblemished!) on the subject, before I went to a dermatologist who suggested she should put me on Accutane. By the time I was formally educated, I had already heard everything from other books, and was also able to identify some dated traditional information. There's nothing old "chocolate won't give you acne" in this book! Everything is up to date and very unpretentiously explained. She really helped me understand why there isn't a consensus of opinion on the "best" cure for acne, why benzoyl peroxide literally ruined my skin and why many chemical ingredients in skin care products I use are bad if you have acne. Most importantly this book contains comprehensive step-by-step routines for each and every skin type, and you can easily mix and match them because they are all gentle and safe. Best thing, Gabriel doesn't sell anything and she's not Proactive or any other beauty brand salesperson.

If you are in the "Your skin, your science experiment" camp, she tells you several easy things so you can learn more about your own skin processes and various regimens (i.e., Acne Facial) you can try to control and fine tune your own skin care routine.

I have tried everything, including years of prescription treatments that made my skin peel, crack, and burn. I used Accutane, twice, with little improvement to my acne at all. I have had moderate to severe acne for years, and finally, at the age of 18, its disappearing thanks to this book. I do not follow their suggested diet, but i do now eat mostly low GI foods. I used her suggestions incrementally to see how each one affected my skin, and the diet alone caused a huge improvement. the recipes as well as her recommendations for products all work great. It is extremely nice to not only be off all of my prescriptions, but to have even better skin than before. after a little less than a month, all i have left are a one or two small pimples and some acne spots and scars that are fading. i would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who do not want to use products with parabans or harsh chemicals

I bought this book along Julie Gabriel's recent book, The Green Beauty Guide, and I must admit: this one is truly amazing and deserves much more attention! As a former acne sufferer, Julie is very focused on natural treatment strategies for acne-prone skin.

What's really great, she offers detailed skincare plans for each group of people who may have acne: teenagers, adult women, men, people with dark and mature skin, even pregnant women!

I enjoyed the homemade recipes, too. I used the book to custom-make my own acne regimen, and I already see the improvement, only after a week of sticking to it.

Gabriel has lots of good information, much of it new to me (even though I'm a rabid consumer of beauty/nutrition news). However, she is not a native English speaker and whoever was supposed to edit/proof her book did a terrible, terrible job. I found the typos and strange sentence structures distracting. It's not a problem on every page, though.

Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, But

Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, Buttermilk, Cream, Coconut Milk, or Any Other Animal or Plant MilkOnce again, Anne Watson creates a wonderful, straight forward approach to what has long been considered a complicated method. This book is the MUST have for anyone wanting to make milk soaps and is light years beyond Casey Makela's book on the same subject. I recommend this book for two major reasons:

1) Watson discusses both liquid milk (what she calls the "cool technique") and powdered milk (the "warm technique") and offers excellent recipes and directions for both. Her method is very relaxed and while it is admittedly a hair more complex than regular CP soap, it's not nearly as complicated as some other books make it sound.

2) Watson dispels the myths of milk soapmaking. This is HUGE. She goes through all of the myths about using milk from what type of milk you need to who can do it.

Also, Watson is accessible through her website. I sent her a question not long ago and she responded to me within two days! How's that for asking the author? :)

Making unique, specialized, and personalized soaps is both a craft and an art. Written and compiled by Anne L. Watson, "Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, Buttermilk, Cream, Coconut Milk, or Any Other Animal or Plant Milk" is a collection of thoroughly 'user friendly' recipes and instructions for making 'milk soaps' and begins with an introduction to the subject, what it is, the equipment required to make it, and choosing between the two principle methods for making milk soaps, along with step-by-step instructions that cover everything from preparation to cleanup. The recipes for specialized milk soaps range from Yogurt Parfait Soap, to Cinnamon Oatmeal Soap, to Marge's Chocolate Silk Soap, to Ruth's Butter Soap, and more! "Milk Soapmaking" also covers such relevant issues as making soap with plant milks, shaping milk soaps, controlling color, and a roster of frequently asked questions about milk soaps. Enhanced with a list of internet resources and an index, "Milk Soapmaking" is enthusiastically recommended for anyone wanting to try their hand as making milk soaps for themselves either as a hobby or as a profession.

Anne Watson's first book made me brave enough to attempt regular cold process soapmaking. While I now feel fairly proficient with that, milk soapmaking was intimidating. Just like with her first book, she explains things in very understandable terms, troubleshoots possible problems before you encounter them and dispels all those mysterious myths about making soap with milk. I really like using the frozen milk with the lye as there are almost no fumes and not so much fuss with the temperatures like in regular soapmaking. My attempts have resulted in lovely bars of milk soap. If I can do this, you can do this.

I've always used gentle milk soaps and now I know how to make them. This book is simple to follow, it has some fantastic recipes and overall a delight to own. I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in making wonderful milk soaps.

Want Milk Soapmaking: The Smart and Simple Guide to Making Lovely Milk Soap From Cow Milk, Goat Milk, But Discount?

I started making soap with Anne's Smart Soapmaking. After becoming comfortable with the basic process of soapmaking, I decided I wanted to expand my horizons and learn about milk soaps. This book does not disappoint. It's written in the same easy to follow manner as her first book...non-intimidating, very clear, very simple.

Since I've started soapmaking, I've purchased books from other authors and I must say that if I would have started with those books, I probably would not have made a batch of soap at all, as a few that I have just don't seem to have the easy to follow instructions like this book has.

Just a note, you don't have to start with Smart Soapmaking. This book is geared toward the beginner just as the other book is. So if you've never made soap before and you're more interested in milk soaps, then this book will have you making beautiful milk soaps in no time at all.

How to Shit in the Woods, 3rd Edition: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost Art

How to Shit in the Woods, 3rd Edition: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost ArtThis book was more about being a book than being an informational guide. It's filled with all sorts of interesting facts that you may have never knew, and there's equally as many pleasing stories to help the book float along. However, if you took the practical information from this book you could put it all on a pamphlet of just a few pages.

To sum up the entire book:

Chapter 1. Why we poo, and the history of the toilet along with some amusing stories. Not practical.

Chapter 2. Dig your hole 6-8 inches deep because that's where bacteria that will help decompose your poo reside. Don't poo below the waterline or even the flood waterline, and do not do it close to any water source, and be mindful that It runs down hill.

Chapter 3. When you just can't dig a hole, figure it out. Lean back or spread wide then pack your poo out.

Chapter 4. Be sure to filter your water so you don't get the runs. If you do get the runs then be sure to clean up properly and leave no trace.

Chapter 5. For women, so admittedly I skimmed, but not much there that isn't common sense.

Chapter 6. When you have no T.P., try not to use plants. If you do, try to use dead plants and brush. If you have to use a live plant then do not massacre an entire plant or branch to satisfy your needs. Be selective and gather from multiple sources and use your common sense when using plants because some are sticky or pointy etc. As far as non-living T.P. goes, well, anything that works will work.

The author gives several very good suggestions for dealing with biological necessities when you're away from civilization.

There are two main schools of thought about human waste in the wild. Bury it or pack it out. The author gives several good suggested methods for both. She clearly favors packing it out, and makes a compelling case for it.

Whichever mindset you favor, the author gives several good, specific examples of ways to implement it.

So I got this book and read it. Then I left it laying around until it wound up on her night stand. What a relief! Firstwith all of my camping experience I found out I didn't know as much as I thought I did. I learned alot, especially about how the laws and common practices have changed since I grew up. Plus, I read many good ideas I'd just never thought of before. As for my wifeshe no longer dreads camping and we have a much better time together outdoors.
