Home Massage: Transforming Family Life through the Healing Power of TouchI was hooked once I picked up this book. As today's world speeds up, the daily stresses in our lives increase and we all end up coping with a higher level of stress than we should. We all have different ways to manage stress and although some methods are more effective than others, most of us could use some help coping with stress. This book will not only help you effectively deal with stress, but it will help you create the type of bonds with family and friends that you never knew you could have. This book will change your life if you let it. If you read it, believe it, and most important of all, apply the principles of this book to your life; you will see life transforming changes. I felt a soothing calm in just reading the book. I hope that this book is read by people everywhere. But more importantly, I hope that people read this book and apply the principles towards their lives. The healing power of Home Massage can be enormous if you let it.

I can't tell you how wonderful this book is for just about anyone. If you have any stress in your life (which is just about anyone nowdays) you will benefit from this book.

I can attest to the fact that a hug, a handshake and massaging are ways to connect with another human being. The book, Home Massage: Transforming Family Life through the Healing Power of Touch will provide ways to use the human touch for healing stress and pain instead of taking medications. This book helped me regain my ability to touch others in my family with respect and compassion. Inside this book you'll find many attractive photos of folks sharing tender, loving massage and touch. They provide a positive model that adults and children can enjoy. With such photos and entertaining writing, "Home Massage" does something no other massage book does: it teaches that communicating and healing through touch is our natural gift.

This book teaches everything you will need to know to give a wonderful massage how to set up (whether using the floor, bed, chair or table), what to have on hand for your partner's comfort, and all the basic massage strokes. The photos and descriptions are excellent. The writers make it clear that your intuition will help guide you as you listen to your partner and your own heart.

Because this is massage for everyone, there are chapters that cover special considerations for giving massage to babies, children, expectant mothers, someone who is ill, and the older adult. The photos of children who are thrilled to give massage to siblings, Mommy or Daddy illustrate what a rich resource home massage can be in giving all family members more quality care and intimate, loving interaction.

In my home, this book made it possible for us to open up to new levels of trust. I recommend this book to people who want to enrich their relationships with family and friends.

Natural Beauty for All Seasons: More Than 250 Simple Recipes and Gift-Giving Ideas for Year-Round Be

Natural Beauty for All Seasons: More Than 250 Simple Recipes and Gift-Giving Ideas for Year-Round BeautyI decided to check this book out at a bookstore first, because I have gotten so many craft books that sound really great, but the materials and ingredients needed are very exotic or expensive. This book is no exception. Although the recipes and ideas are simple and easy, the essential oils needed (which are NOT cheap, mind you.) and the other array of items (that no one keeps in their house) would cost a fortune.

Her other book, "Natural Beauty at Home", is a MUCH better book, with the same easy and simple instructions, and realistic materials. Ideas like oatmeal masks, potpurri, and soap that are not hard to do, and not pricey. I highly recommend this one over "Natural Beauty for All Seasons".

I live in this book, I have owned it for almost a year and still find new recipes that are wonderful. For those people with sensitive skin, this is a must. My friends are always asking me to make them face scrubs and lotions.

This is the second book I have purchased by this author. She has inspired me to create more beauty products for myself and ideas on how to make creative gifts for my family and friends for the upcoming holidays. I'm always concerned when i give home-made gift that they may look cheap as presents, she has many ideas to make them look better than the store bought ones. I'm ready to go to some antique stores and look for bottles, baskets and etc. The recipes are simple and easy to make. I will be experimenting alot.

I have enjoyed all of Janet Cox's books although this is the only one I own (the rest I borrowed). The recipes are easy, the ingredients easy to find at grocery or natural food stores, or online. I would give this a five star rating except for the recipes which call for petroleum based products (and there are a few in everyone of her books) and the fact that some of the lip balms harden when they cool to the point of dragging at your lips. Easy enough to fix (simply remelt and add more oil to the mix until you are happy with the final product). Overal very enjoyable reading and gift giving.

I love this book! I just recently started making my own products, but some books I looked at had things that were too much of a pain to bother with. But this book is excellent. The recipes are easy and fun to make, and the ingredients are easily obtainable. The gift giving ideas are great, and it has just been a wonderful resource. I will definately be purchasing her other books!

The Biggest Loser: 6 Weeks to a Healthier You: Lose Weight and Get Healthy For Life!

The Biggest Loser: 6 Weeks to a Healthier You: Lose Weight and Get Healthy For Life! For the past couple of months, I have been cooking exclusively from the Biggest Loser cookbooks and loving it. We (my husband, sons, and myself) have been impressed with every recipe (with one exception--I found out too late that we are not fans of blue cheese). The newest addition to the BL family of books, 6 Weeks to a Healthier You, is no exception. The book is written in an incredibly user-friendly format and features season 9 contestants from The Biggest Loser television program. Each week specifically targets a health issue, including the prevention and reversal of diabetes, lowering high blood pressure, cancer prevention, and boosting your immune system. As with many of the previous Biggest Loser books, each menu is accompanied by easy to follow instructions for exercising, valuable information and tips, and inspirational tidbits from The Biggest Loser contestants.

I admit that the main reason I purchased this book was for the recipes. Some of my family's favorites so far are: Sizzling Ginger Pork, Sweet Pepper-Chicken Sandwich, Berry-Licious Oatmeal, Banana Fudge Smoothie, Mexican Turkey Burgers, and My German Lover. Every recipe calls for readily available ingredients, the directions are simple to follow, and the results are delicious and healthy.

I absolutely love ALL the Biggest Loser books! Yes, the info is the same as the previous ones before but basically, aren't they all?? There is nothing new or different about losing weight now, or in the past: get off your duff and exercise, choose healthier foods, eliminate sweets/sugar, drink lots of water...EVERY diet book says the same things; its just how it is packaged and said in a way that motivates YOU as the one reading it, to do it.That is why BL is so popular in the first place; the motivation they give the average person, is amazing.

The information is basic, honest and things we already know but need hearing again; the stories, pictures and lives of the former and current contestants are inspiring and motivating. The recipes are simple, easy and taste great! Banana fudge smoothie? Who wouldn't want to drink that? Yummm!! I just saw a review that said the recipes were too hard and that many of the ingredients most people don't have lying around the pantry or kitchen......Ummm, you mean salt? Pepper? Fruit? Oatmeal? Where do you live that you can't find that at a local supermarket or even Farmer's Market? And unless you are SUPER lazy, how can the recipes be too difficult? Really?

I can't wait til season 10 starts in a few months! The book is good, the recipes are good and for beginners, it is a great book to start out with to ease yourself into a new life of health and fitness.

My family and I have been following the food meals for a total of 3 weeks and the four of us (in-laws, husband and myself) have lost 32.5 lbs all together thus far. The meals can seem a bit pricey but once you do the math of how much you would pay by going out, it is actually better. It does take a bit of time to cook and pack but it has been worth it for our family!

I read the book and believe the information is very interesting and informative, I am a little frustrated in the fact that from day to day I have to purchase another grocery list of items to prepare a new soup or meal and I have a tone of ingredients left over that just seem to go to waist, I feel like it is a waist of groceries and is expensive, I was really excited to start this and get on a biggest loser plan but financially it is really not feesable for me, I guess I will follow the instructions and try to incorporate the meal plans in more than just one day. On the more positive side, since I have been on it I do not feel hungry and I do feel that the meals and snacks are filling and satisfying.

At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me

At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and MeAnne Clinard Barnhill, born in 1952 relates the story of her life as sister to Becky, who was born 1/31/58. Becky displayed autistic behavior almost from infancy. She became continent at 4; was marginally verbal for the first few years of her life; communicated by phrasing her statements as questions, e.g. "Does the Becky want to eat? Why can't the Becky learn at home?" Anne, 6 years her sister's senior took Becky under her wing and was lovingly protective of her. She even spent her summers working with Becky on cognitive skills.

Sadly, precious little was known about autism in those days. Becky was erroneously labled as "emotionally disturbed" and even retarded. Sadly, this was not uncommon back then. Becky's schooling was also a problem in 1965, she was expelled for disruptive behavior from one special needs class in West Virginia and saw a therapist. One group home refused to take her until she became fully self-sufficient in toileting. Although continent and reliable, Becky still needed help cleaning up. Once she mastered that skill, Pressley House, a group home/school was willing to accept her after placing her on a waiting list.

On October 1, 1966 the Clinards took Becky to Amos Cottage, which was an interim placement. Becky served 9 months in Amos Cottage which sounded like a genuine hellhole. Nurses ran the place and the lowest functioning children were kept in crib-cages with bars across the top. Becky talked of the "water babies in the basement," which sounded like she meant children with hydrocephalus. She was able to describe Amos Cottage, which sounded horrible. The Clinards were horrified by the place as anyone would be, but sadly there was no other place forthcoming for Becky.

In June of 1967 after a nearly 9-month sentence in Amos House, Becky enjoyed the annual family camping trip; had fun dodging her sister and sneaking off to the pool which was verboten and in general loving the outdoors. Despite many of her unexplainable behaviors, Anne remains loving and tolerant of Becky. I like that.

Becky's behavior remains severely autistic. She pulls dolls apart until they are limbless and headless; she flips any object in her path and she gives her sister the nickname "Jet," explaining that she thinks Anne's face is jet-plane shaped. (Kind of makes you think of Paul McCartney & Wings' song, "Jet.")

Anne talks about her own milestones; her love of the Beatles whom she discovered in late 1963; her boyfriends; her schools; her crushes; her peers and how they all related to Becky. I like the way she describes her response to the events of the day, e.g. Viet Nam War (she had classmates and friends who were drafted); hippies and the music and the family Ford Galaxie, a singularly cool car. One funny story involves how Anne and her friends got stuck in that Ford and rescued it, with great music from 1968 as the soundtrack.

Anne introduces readers to her family. Readers are treated to both sets of grandparents, aunts and cousins as well. One of my favorite parts was when the girls' mother would sing Beatle songs and emphasize the "yeah, yeah, yeah" chorus in the 1963 classic, "She Loves You." It just goes to show you that nobody could dodge that Beatle influence! Becky's classmates wanted her to choose Beatle songs for her ballet recital. The Beatles remain a comforting presence throughout the book.

Despite their vastly different needs and personalities, the sisters really do, as the Beatles said, "Come Together." Readers get to follow Anne down her growing up years and experience into adulthood; at the same time readers follow Becky's progress as well. Becky weathers some major storms, including abuse at a group home when she was 9-11.

Becky's sentence at Pressley House ended in 1971. Then 13, she went onto a special program at the local high school and secured a diploma in 1979 for merely attending. She worked at area sheltered workshops before she entered a group home in 1990 at age 32.

Readers get to cheer Anne's successes as well; a successful second marriage; a blessing of 3 sons; her degrees and her courage and candor in sharing her life and that of her immediate family. Readers are encouraged by Becky's progress as well. Their story has helped lift the Dark Curtain of the Dark Ages that acted as a barrier towards appropriate placement and diagnosis for people with autism. Sadly, few options existed in those days.

In addition to the Beatle parts which I readily identified with and understood, I like the way Anne Clinard Hill opens each chapter with a passage from "The Wizard of Oz." This classic is one she and Becky have loved over the decades and do to this day.

This book makes me think of the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz." Readers cannot help but think that in time the Path to Acceptance and recognition of autism is closer than over that rainbow and is tangible, not illusive. I am one of the people who thinks that. I like the way Becky accepts herself as well and I think this is one of the best books I have ever read about a sibling who has autism.

This book explores the often unnoticed side of being a so-called 'normal' (or 'neurotypical') person who loves someone with a mental disorder, namely autism. I found this memoir refreshing in the way that it unapologetically gives voice to those of us on the other side of the coin--those of us who have done our best to stretch our love outside of the box by often putting our own needs on hold to be good family. This book will especially appeal to baby boomers who have grown up with autistic siblings during a time when the disorder was still unnamed, as it addresses the historically inaccurate 'parental blame' theory of the disorder's etiology. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been touched by someone with a mental disorder, and anyone who considers themselves an advocate for the mentally ill.

Buy At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me Now

In this poignant memoir, Anne Barnhill explores the importance of home and family. Despite living with a sister who is considered to be "different" by society, the author reveals how she and her family grew closer through caring for and mentoring "different" Becky. As society dictated at the time (during the 1960's), at first the autistic little girl was put away in a home, as her sister watched and cried. Later, fortunately, Becky, came home again. She didn't need the aid of chicking her heels. The love of family gave her the rainbow she needed.

In the author's lyrical account, the Barnhill family learns to value Becky for herself, rejoicing in her accomplishments. The possibilities for Becky, as well as others with autism, are now limitless.

Everyone with a family member who is considered "different" should read this lyrical tale. The lesson here is that loving someone "different" touches the heart in new and extraordinary ways. Once you complete this fine book, filled with humor and pathos, you'll become a fan of author Barnhill and root for her sister Becky.

Anne Barnhill's memoir, At Home in the Land of Oz, deserves far more press than it has received. The book describes in unusual detail the trials, tribulations and warm, loving times that her family experienced as they helped to understand her unusual sister. Only in recent years was an accurate diagnosis of autism given. Saddled with the feeling that somehow they weren't doing enough for their "emotionally disturbed" daughter, Anne describes how the family adjusted, worked, and strived to help her sister be normal. At times embarrassed by inappropriate behavior and at other times protective and outraged at inappropriate reactions to her sister from others, Anne tells us how she always wanted a family that was "just normal." The underlying question evolves, just what is "normal" after all. I give this book five stars and recommend it highly, not only to families struggling with members who live outside the boundaries of acceptable behavior, but for those of us who want to understand how we can be better neighbors.

Want At Home in the Land of Oz: Autism, My Sister, and Me Discount?

This memoir of a sister of an autistic is a good read for anyone touched in anyway by autism or by a family member with differences. Anne Barnhill's sister was born in the 50's when autism was a mysterious ailment and families were left to flounder helplessly. The author's perspective of growing up with a sister who was so "different" touched my heart. She is ruthlessly honest about her moments of wanting to belong with the cool kids at school and having to cope with them finding out or seeing her sister with her odd way of talking and hand-flipping. Her anguish when her sister had "melt-downs" in public can be felt by everyone. The parts of the memoir where the author believes she herself might start doing odd things is something seen in families of anyone with a so-called mental problem. And the quotes from letters her proud father wrote trying to get public financial support when her sister needed to be in an institution for training are heart-breaking. But the most touching parts are when the author realizes that her love for her sister triumphs over everything else. Her sister is currently in an adult program and doing well. I can recommend this book as a read for families with autism or mental illness.

Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program

Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training ProgramThis book is a must-read. I heard a lot of hype about this book before purchasing, and I'm glad I finally bought it. I did the entire 4 month routine and honestly, my body feels better than it ever has in the past.

I was used to the traditional bodybuilding bodypart split of chest on Monday, legs on Tuesday, Arms on Wednesday, etc etc. For years, I just accepted that this was the way to train your body. I just dealt with back pain and shoulder pain as part of the "price of working out." Doing 5 exercises for your back in one day, and 5 exercises for your shoulders in one day is the absolute wrong way to train your body, unless you are an actual bodybuilder, but for the average fitness enthusiast, that just doesn't apply.

Eric's book outlines splitting your routines into upper body days and lower body days. The routines are easy to follow. Full detailed pictures, and explanations. One of the most important things he advocates is varying the rep range each week within the 4 week routine. You probably never have done any exercise of 8 sets of 2 reps or 10 sets of 3 reps. You have to keep in mind Eric is a Strength & Conditioning Coach with the goal of getting you stronger. I was hesitant, but you have to open your mind and try it.

My body feels stronger, and more balanced. There are a few non-traditional exercises that you probably have never heard of, or are hesitant to try out. My advice would be to do everything in the book to a T. It works. You may be reluctant to do so much deadlifting and squatting. You may have never hear of scapular push ups, walls slides, face pulls, or behind the neck band pull aparts. Open your mind. Follow the routines exactly and you will be glad you did. I know I am. Your body will feel so much stronger, more balanced, and your posture improves. I hope this doesn't sound like a 3 a.m info-mercial testimonial for the latest fitness product, because it's not. I'm a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Gym Rat who has been lifting for 11 years. Open your mind, try the routines, follow to a T. Your body will thank you.

Eric Cressey knows how to get people bigger and stronger, period. I got to do the Maximum Strength Program last summer and during that time I had my 1RM deadlift go from 275 to 400lbs in four months. I am more mobile than ever and I am no longer in pain (used to be low back). I now have great posture and have built a great base of strength.

This book outlines the four phases with multistep pictures of the exercises (both strength training and mobility/warm-up). Also there is a nice section dedicated towards nutrition as well.

Eric is 110% correct when he says you need to get stronger to get bigger. If you have stalled with your progress and want to get bigger and stronger, there is no better way then with Maximum Strength, for under $15 you can not go wrong.

Buy Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Now

Eric Cressey delivers on his promise to get you stronger in 16 weeks. I know because as a former client I completed the Maximum Strength program and posted personal bests in all of my lifts. Which lifts? The ones that matter, that show true strength. Completing Maximum Strength, I would have been pleased if only my bench press numbers increased, and they did, but so did my deadlift, squat, and chin-up (my broad jump increased, too).

The 16-week program is not the only reason to buy "Maximum Strength." Eric does a phenomenal job of showing how to perform each exercise correctly, which a) eliminated bad habits I picked up in the past and b) keeps me injury free.

It's the old story of teaching the man how to fish: Eric provides a program that increases strength and sets a path to continue getting stronger after those 16 weeks. If you're serious about strength training, you need to read "Maximum Strength."

Read Best Reviews of Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Here

In Eric's introduction to this book, he describes his aspiration to be strong and fit, but not huge. The introduction alone is worth the price of the book. This is a man that deadlifted 650 lbs in competition at a body weight of 181. He knows how to get people strong, yet keep them healthy. His entire program is designed to progress in power, speed and absolute strength while addressing many commonly flawed movement patterns.

I'm a 47 year old male that has begun to find it difficult to move without pain and stiffness. I am now 9 weeks into the 16 week program and I have progressed to the point were my passive ROM in my joints has improved as well as my mobility. I haven't benched in 4 years due to shoulder pain and had all but conceded that I would never again be able to, but I'm now benching without pain. I just can't say enough positive things about this book and for the price is a steal.

Want Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Discount?

A fine treatise on the fundamentals of strength. It is precise, well researched and innovative. Also, I really liked the voice of the book....casual and humorous but informative.

This guy is close to genius on the subject. A free thinker that backs his theorys with science. He draws heavily on research and builds his program from the fundamentals. That combination together with the innovative style makes a unique approach plausible and possibly the bible on the subject.
