The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies

The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home RemediesThis book is the first one I've read on Ayurveda which makes immediate sence. Written in a practical straight forward way, It is obvious the author genuinely cares about his readers.

I have tried several cures listed in the book, they have provided better and faster relief than any drugs. There is one for sinus headache (pg 250) that worked in less than 10 min. And the best story of all, is one he lists for food allergies which has allowed me to eat dairy and wheat again. This book has changed my life. I have been independantly studying holistic medicine for the past 9 years, and this book is a fast leap forward in my awareness of the field of alternative treatments.

I only hope to be able to meet Dr. Lad some day and offer my gratitude.

Sincerely

Eric Lloyd

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is actively involved in attaining a good health or someone with health issues who is looking for a natural way to fix it. I have read this and many other books by Dr. Lad and also been to a 3 day health convention where he personally discussed the Ayurvedic ways of achieving perfect health. I cannot say enough about Ayurveda in general and the way Dr. Lad puts forth the information and it all makes so much sense. I have personally used his remedies discussed in this book for severe respiratory allergies, sciatica and common colds etc and it works!!!!! However, any user has to understand that these remedies are not like weatern medicine but they work as a life style change in terms of following a daily routine of life, watching your food combinations and knowing and eating according to your body type. I have recommended this book to many of my friends. I fact, I own 3 copies and keep lending two to friends and still have one for myself to consult.

This is probably the best book on ayurveda available today. It is clear, doesn't go into excessive detail, and gives you a wonderful sense of self-understanding. Dr. Lad has written other books as well, but this one is the most approachable.

Who would have thought that mixing a mashed banana with two very common kitchen ingredients would help with a little girl's cough? Or, that a tea containing cinnamon combined with two other tasty kitchen spices would reduce a little boy's fever?

Dr. Ladd's book is full of simple, home remedies that are wonderful for children and perfect for parents who are interested in natural home medicines for their children. Our family has used the recipies in this book extensively for both children and adults over the years with great success. If you are looking for a replacement for the standard over the counter drugs for kids, this is the book for you.

Your Face Never Lies (Avery Health Guides)

Your Face Never LiesAfter you read this little book, you will likely never look at faces in quite the same way again. This 1983 book, originally published in London, is only 77 pages in length plus 5 pages of suggested readings, info about the writers, and an index. The cover states it is an introduction to oriental diagnosis and what your face reveals about you and your health. The preface explains that oriental diagnosis views the physical and mental aspects of the total person, in addition to the troubled organs or body parts. The analysis includes an interpretation of the person's lifestyle, including both environmental and social surroundings.

The booklet explains a bit about Yin and Yang, the diet, development of the embryo, sections of the face and the corresponding major body systems (nervous, digestion, and circulation). We look at the structure of the face, where certain lines develop on the face (and their meaning), eyes, eyebrows, eyelids, blinking, the shape and size of the mouth, the relationships of different parts of the lips to the digestive system, the teeth, the ears, the hair, balding in certain areas in relationship to weakness of certain organs, the skin coloration (red, yellow, green, blue, purple, blackness, grey, pallor, transparency, whitedness/white spots, texture, oily, wet) and what each means, lines in the hands, nails, energy meridians in the body, pulses, voice, hearing, handwriting slants, habits, food advice, and giving advice to people.

There is a heck of a lot of info in this book. The down-side is that you will probably find yourself studying obvious lines and characteristics that you see on people, especially if they have a strong influence in your life. The up-side is that you can possibly help yourself by spotting and correcting certain weaknesses before they do permanent damage. You might also be able to help others close to you, if they are willing to listen. If you are a practitioner of some kind, even in subtle energy therapies, you may be able to provide additional information to your clients.

Look to this book to provide you with additional insight/clues to better health, to help you discover or investigate issues before they do damage. Do not use it to replace your medical health care professional.

This rudimentary book explicates and interprets lines and configurations of the face, hands, and body areas, as well as voice and handwriting, according to macrobiotic principles of dietary consumption which have their roots in Oriental medicine.

Seems like it keeps repeating and not getting down to any details. Very few useful pictures. Not interesting to read.

I found this book created more confusion than understanding for me. This book has some interesting ideas, but neglects to really help you understand them. It seems to me to be way to generalized, each human body is so individual and what effects one may be completely different in another This book seems to make so many rigid rules and finite ideas on the way things are. In my experience that's just not life everything and everyone is so different. I am not so sure eastern medicine is not as rigid as western in it's own unique way. This book did put forth some very good and helpful ideas, but was mostly confusing.

Yoga and Fertility: A Journey to Health and Healing

Yoga and Fertility: A Journey to Health and HealingThere are a lot of books out there on yoga--some touch on the concept of "yoga and fertility"--but this is the only one that I've found that does such an excellent job linking yoga and fertility together!

This book describes a number of different topics under that heading, including why certain poses are appropriate for increasing good blood flow to pelvic region and follicle stimulation to produce good quality eggs. Where many yoga books will discuss form with some yoga history, this book is unique because discusses which poses are crucial to do at which phases of the cycle (menstrual and even IVF!) by backing up the information with biological knowledge and yoga tradition. Lastly, I really appreciate this book because it not only focuses on the concept of "yoga and fertility" with pregnancy in mind--but also expands that definition to broadened the idea of fertility to our bodies being a fertile ground at any point that you come to yoga. During this very trying period of trying to get pregnant, I feel nourished by this book that nourishes my whole self as one who is boosting fertility for my own well being.

Fantastic book that really broadens yoga as something that is daily, accessible and particular to our bodies needs--where ever we are. Thank you Jill and Lynn!!!!

The book does a great job of laying out easy to follow routines. I've gone to yoga classes for years, but I've never felt comfortable doing a routine at home, at least not until now. I simply follow the routine for the half of the cycle that relates to me, knowing that each position has a specific purpose for nourishing and supporting my body. I'd highly recommend this book!

I have been told that I should avoid strenuous exercise to conceive, (I am in my forties and trying to get pregnant for the first time!) so I was happy to find this book on yoga and fertility. Not only will I get some daily exercise but the authors have written clear explanations of how each pose will enhance fertility. The yoga routines are simple enough for a beginner, but there are also intermediate routines for those who might have more experience. The instructions and pictures are very clear and helpful. Supplemental information on lifestyle, diet, and other "alternative" approaches to fixing infertility are thorough and informative. An excellent book, that has given me hope in my quest to have a baby, in spite of what my doctors are telling me!

I've been taking Lynn's Yoga for Fertility class for a year now, but I always had trouble maintaining my own yoga practice on non-class days. This book changed all that and now I have an easy go to reference with amazing pictures and positive success stories to read and inspire me. I find it much easier to do yoga on my own now and I find it's definitely helping me loosen up and get in touch with my body. I think this is a wonderful resource for anyone struggling with infertility!

Indispensible Guide to Classic Mens Clothing

Indispensible Guide to Classic Mens ClothingThis book sticks pretty close to its avowed topic -classic men's clothing. You won't find discussions of jeans and tee shirts in here, for instance. But you will find tons of great information on picking out quality "classic" clothing. That doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to find business casual clothes if you read this book, but it definitely leans more towards the dressy side of things.

The only real problem with the book is the lack of photos. They do a better job than some other books (I finally figured out the difference between herringbone and houndstooth!) but they don't have quite enough to help explain all of the many things they talk about. Just a few more photos could have pushed this book into the five star territory.

Have to jump in here. I loved this book, precisely because it doesn't just tell men what to wear. Style isn't about being told exactly what to wear. Style is understanding what clothes say about a man and how to look good! Any book that tells you exactly what to wear is going to be stale in one year. This is the book that lays out the whys!

After reading other reviews of this book, I requested it for the 2006 holidays and received it. I have read it cover to cover and am highly pleased overall. I offer the following plusses and minuses:

+ This book's advice is direct and concise without losing completeness. In a short paperback, the authors give advice on suits, sport coats, shirts, socks, shoes, outerwear, accessories, business casual, and personal style.

+ Closely related, the authors offer salient historical details without lapsing into narration of major style arcs through the evolution of menswear. The rest of their writing offers advice and rules. Lest you be frightened by rules, know that the authors presents rules that you should follow first, understand second, and break creatively third.

+ The authors present opinions of many fine men's clothiers, including Burberry, J. Press, and more.

There are precious few photographs in this volume, and most photos are of poor reproduction quality. The next best are the drawings and sketches that, while competent to good, do not substitute for photography of men's style icons.

The other indispensable title for a menswear library is "Dressing the Man" by Flusser. It solves the minus above and is the perfect companion to this title.

For the small price of this paperback, you cannot go wrong in adding it to your cart.

Great book and a must have for any man that has even the slightest interest in what he is wearing (whether an expert or not). The book is written in question and answer form with the topics ranging from neckwear / collars to shoes. An excellent place to start if a man is interested on dressing better (or if one is already experienced with menswear)

The book goes into depth on all aspects of men's clothing and is a great resource. It leans towards traditional wear (one won't find a discussion on premium denim / hip hop styles / mixing denim jeans with sport coats) but this book still covers the basics. And, if one doesn't know the basics of style, one can't be advanced, no matter what style of clothing one wears.

There are no pics, just drawings (which worked fine for me). All of the drawings accurately described the topic being discussed.

However, if one wants a truely beautiful book with illustrations and a very deep, rich history of men's clothing, Flusser's "Dressing the Man" is the way to go.

Leboeuf's Home Health Care Handbook: All You Need to Become a Caregiver in Your Home

Leboeuf's Home Health Care Handbook: All You Need to Become a Caregiver in Your HomeThis book is a "must", for anyone in the home health care position.Professionals, family members, friends, and care-givers can all benefit. The information that it provides is priceless. I'd been a care-provider for my disabled daughter, for many years, before I found it;and it helped me tremendously. I am still refering to this book, now and probably always will be! What impressed me the most was the "800" #, that you can call, for any help that the book does not give you! How many authors give you a # to call them at? This is so important because every case is so different.Often what helps one person, does not necessarily help another. Also, when you have a loved one that is ill;you are very busy, and it is impossible to find out all the information you need. This book wraps it all into one source. I commend the author!
