The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook: A Home Manual

The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook: A Home ManualThe Herbal Medicine-Makers Handbook blends the herbalist author's natural home remedies with his perspectives on the art of herbal medicine's applications, with recipes for folk extractions including plenty of recommendations for usage. The result is far more in-depth than your usual herbal recipe book, packed with insights on how to extract herbs, make tinctures, and apply them properly.

I have lots of great herb books, but this one is the first that gives me detailed and practical information about how to MAKE preparations myself. Green's gentle sense of humor make it approachable, but he also is responsibly thorough. The book is fun to read and I've made my first tincture. I very highly recommend the book to someone who actually wants to USE herbs for healing.

I have collected and given away many medical herb books, mostly because they were inferior to my needs. This Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook has made it easy to find the herb I need. I am also able to read the ways to use the herb; tinture, lotion, extract, decoction, infussion, tea, salve. I use this book as a refresher and a source of new herbs in treatment. It has become my primary source book for new and innovative ways to help people.

Have you ever come in from the garden on one of those balmy days when the sun is "just right" neither too hot nor too cold, but warm enough to draw the aroma from your flowers, and thought to yourself, "I would love to preserve that smell for a rainy day." Well, you can by bottling tonics, elixirs, hydrosols, syrups and other concoctions that upon opening in the middle of winter, have the power to transport back to summer days, and perhaps even cure the nasty cold or flu affecting you, or even better, help prevent your becoming sick in the first place.

James Green is the most transparent of human beings, an admiral characteristic in someone who is a healer. Green lives what he writes about, and has for a number of years. He is witty, wise, and compassionate. His methods are clearly described and discussed. You too can make many of his products using standard kitchen equipment in your own home. What you make will have your own imprimatur as you will have control over the process and can modify the steps as need be.

Green makes medicine. Some herbalists disagree with the idea of focusing on herbal products as part of a medical model, preferring instead to practice only the holistic healing which concentrates on prevention by focusing on the context within which the individual lives. Sometimes, however, no matter what you do, you get sick. Green not only shows you how to create products to deal with these lapses, he suggests ways to address them. Recipes as well as clear instructions for making tinctures, syrups, and other concoctions are included. You will probably get well just because they generally smell so good.

Finally a book that takes the magic of herbalism and adds a healthy dose of structure, science and common sense. As a beginning herbalist, I find the information contained in the book extremely useful and not found in many other places. This book has earned its place on my favorite list.

Handbook of Home Health Standards and Documentation Guidelines for Reimbursement, 2nd Edition

Handbook of Home Health Standards and Documentation Guidelines for Reimbursement, 2nd EditionI have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients. Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms. Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing. The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care. Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines. There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well. All home care codes are listed.

With the often-confusing regulations and data gathering tools out there, at least we on the front lines have this portable manual to help us sort out our assessments and evaluations into the accurate coding and leveling criteria that supports what we do, what we observe, and allows for the appropriate revenue to support the levels of care our patients require. As OASIS data-gathering evolves, newer editions will be needed to keep up with the miriad of changes that will ensue, but at least here is a standard we can all make good use of, and I am willing to bet every nurse, from novice to manager, will find something in this manual that was not known or delineated as well to them in the past.

This manual would also make a wonderful teaching tool for nursing students. They may as well learn early on how intricate the data-gathering tools are in the real working world. Accurate notations on the OASIS forms can either make or break a case, not only regarding reimbursement, but as to whether the levels of care, and variety of disciplines, that you feel are needed, are allowed to provide services to your patient. Hasty and inaccurate translation of evaluations and assessments onto the OASIS forms results in inability to justify to Medicare that the levels of intervention you are requesting are appropriate.

I have always used this handbook to train new home care nurses. It's compact enough to fit into their nursing bag and tote along on admissions. Be sure to order one for each nurse and therapist or they will get into a tug of war over them

I love this book because, being in the home health industry you have to know what you're charting. If charting is lacking then you will not get the full reimbursement that you are entitled to. Thanks alot.

Second Wind: The Rise of the Ageless Athlete

Second Wind: The Rise of the Ageless AthleteI thought your readers might be interested in a few words from someone profiled in this book. I'm the 70-year-old bodybuilder.

Lee Bergquist first contacted me late in 2004, and has been in regular contact since then--by telephone, email and in person. He actually came here and talked, ate, and trained with me.

I knew he was working on the book long and hard. Still, I didn't fully appreciate the size and scope of his undertaking. He criss-crossed the country talking to and observing an amazing array of elite older athletes. They're all passionate about what they do.

Lee tells the stories of 18 masters athletes in an informed, curious, and honest way. Unlike most books of this type, Second Wind looks behind every tree and under every rock. No rose-colored glasses treatment here. Think magnifying glass.

Bergquist tells about these athletes, warts and all. He digs beneath the surface to see what makes each one tick, what drives them. Sometimes it's not so pretty, but it is always interesting and instructive.

Lee explores weaknesses as well as strengths, including personal, financial, and psychological quandaries. Among other things, he probes the use of performance enhancing drugs, feelings of inadequacy, memory problems, childhood troubles, and eccentric behavior traits. As you might expect, he uncovers orthopedic problems experienced by just about everyone. He ferrets out the full and complete stories of these high performance athletes. Most of them have problems of one sort or another, and all of them have inspiring stories to tell.

Lee has poured his heart and soul into this book. While his decades as a journalist covered "just about everything but sports," researching, investigating, and writing this book has earned him the equivalent of a master's degree in masters athletes.

Here's his concluding paragraph and the bottom line of his master's thesis: The experiences of these men and women aren't so different from our own. The human body is a wonderful engine. And it wants to be pushed.

Amen.

Clarence Bass, author of Great Expectations: Health, Fitness, Leanness, Without Suffering (Ripped Enterprises, 2007)

A compilation of 18 stories about older men and women who are true athletes in the finest sense of the word. It is a great read for those who are interested in improving their athletic ability, their mental outlook, their overall physical conditioning, and their desire to learn more about other forms of athletic endeavor. I found it a highly satisfying and pleasurable read.

This book in unique in that within the first 10 minutes of reading it I felt like getting up and working out. The author tells interesting stories about outstanding older athletes in a way that motivates even us average athletes. He has stories about bodybuilders, marathoners, bicyclists, skiers, and many others and tells their personal stories and also shares their training tips. While some of these athletes' drive is extraordinary, the message is clear even when you get older (50+) you can still workout, get into shape and feel good about yourself.

What a great book! Reading about the incredible performances of these athletes would inspire anyone at any age to pursue a goal, a dream. Especially recommend for athletes or would-be athletes approaching age 50 or beyond. The book is a series of stories about individuals who bike, run, swim, ski, pump iron in their 50s through 70s and are able to perform at or near levels they achieved in their youth. The message...as we age, we do not have to stop exercising. We do not have to give up competing. My personal story at age 60, I was swimming faster and farther and bicycling faster and farther than ever before in my life. This book has inspired me to keep going.

I felt inspired to continue my running career after reading a few of the 18 athlete profiles that Bergquist, a journalist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, offered in this book. This book is well written and engaging; a great gift idea for an older athlete just starting to get in shape and train for running, swimming or another sport.

The book is divided into chapters. Each athlete gets their own chapter, so it is a good book for by the bedside table. Readers can read one athlete profile per night, or read the book cover to cover.

I have often told people that running is a good sport to encourage young people to take up in high school because it is a form of exercise that will stay with them their whole lives. Nearly every weekend during the summer there is a 5K race in my community. Most adults used to being motivated by deadlines and the positive feeling of accomplishing a project will welcome the 'training for a race' nature of long distance running. This book helped me to discover that swimming, tennis and cycling can also encourage lifelong activity.

I love this book, I just wish it came on a dvd so that I could use it for my students as a reference. It has everything in it and more. wow!!!!!!

Thank you Eleanora Habnit

The book is one of many I purchased after I learned permanent makeup about 5 years ago. I really was not thrilled with the lack of real technical information. It seemed too general. I have since met Theresa Garcia and found her site about 6 months ago. She has a wealth of knowledge and research in this subject. I email her all of the time with questions. She has written a book and another is in the making. see her at

I found the book very vague on technical "how to" information. Beautiful pictures though...lots of artsy reference but lacking for the technician. A good book for a potential client of permanent makeup although who would read a whole book to decide yay or nay? Get it for the pictures!! But you won't learn much from it.

The Skin Type Solution

The Skin Type SolutionI purchased this book after reading a review about it in a magazine, and I'm extremely pleased with it!

Before buying the book, I was worried that the questionnaire that Dr. Baumann provides wouldn't be as easy as it was to follow since, in the past, I've often found that questionnaires sometimes don't reveal your categories as clearly as they could. In this case, however, her questionnaire was simple and accurate, and I learned a great deal about my skin.

What I also like is that Dr. Baumann provides you with information in case you fall into a borderline area in one of the four categories. For instance, I fall between the Wrinkled and Tight skintypes in one category, but the book suggested that if this is the case, that I follow the Wrinked guidelines to prevent the formation of future wrinkles. She offers similar suggestions throughout, so that you know when and how to use the products she recommends.

I also like how Dr. Baumann provides products in a variety of price ranges, many of which can be found at a local drugstore. The only downside is that some of the prices were a bit more expensive than her price rating system seems to suggest. For example, each of the products is rated from $-$$$ in terms of its cost. Two of my recommended eye creams were in the $$ price range, when one, in fact, costs $55 and the other $68. It seems like these should have been placed in the $$$ range, and these aren't the only examples of this nature.

Overall, though, it's been an excellent purchase! Considering how much many of us spend on beauty and facial products, the book is a very good investment. Personally, I know that it will help me avoid making costly mistakes in the future. Instead of continuing to spend money on products that don't work for my skin type, I now feel like I will be a more confident shopper.

In my teens and twenties I never paid much attention to my skin, partly because I didn't have any major problems and partly because I wasn't very interested in beauty, fashion magazines and the like. I'd wash my face in the shower and draw a couple lines under my eyes in the morning and that was the extent of my skin care and make-up routine. But, at 34 I noticed a lesion on my face that turned out to be skin cancer. It was nothing serious and was taken care very easily, but it made me start looking at my skin more closely, and, much to my dismay, I realized that I was beginning to show the signs of ageing; for the first time I noticed that I had crowsfeet, smile lines and age spots. I decided I probably should start taking a little better care of my skin, but I didn't really know "what" I should be doing. Since it's nearly impossible to get a dermatologist to spend any serious time with you, I decided to buy a book instead. I bought this one and I think it was a good choice.

The book helps you assess the type of skin you have and determine what products and procedures are best for you. It also impresses upon you the importance of sunscreen. For many skin types, like mine, Dr. Baumann suggests a Retinoid product that you have to get through a dermatologist. This seems to have been good advice as I have read several articles in other sources (NYTimes and Consumer Reports) that say that Retinoids are the ony products which have been scientifically proven to reduce the signs of ageing. So, for the recommendation of suncreen and retinoids, I'm very thankful to the author.

As far as some of the other product recommendations are concerned, I have taken them with a grain of salt. If I choose to use them, I buy the cheapest ones or look for another product that has the same active ingredient. Is she endorsing certain products for financial gain? Possibly. But, she does give you enough information so that you can seek out cheaper alternatives. One thing is for sure, this book did not save me any money. A tube of Avene (the Retinoid) alone is costing me $50/month and if you buy all the other "stuff" (special cleansers, eye cream, antioxidant moisterizers, etc.) you could "easily" find yourself spending over a $100/month on your face.

The author is also a big proponent of Botox. She herself has been using Botox since she was 29. I personally perfer to stay away from needles and injections. Not only is it extremely costly and something that you need to do on a regular basis, but for me it seems like it's taking the anti-ageing program a bit too far. We all are going to age, so a certain amount of acceptance (resignation?) seems in order. I want to keep my skin in the best condition possible, but I also want to be able to accept my ageing body and face (with it's smile lines and crows feet). While I can "totally" sympathize with women (and men) who have these procedures, it is my hope that I can acquire a healthy attitude about ageing and spend all the money I would have invested in Botox on something more fulfulling, like wonderful vacations. But, perhaps this is easy to say while I'm still in my thirties. Maybe I'll feel differently in my sixties.

At any rate, I think this is a very informative book and it has helped me make some well-informed, positive changes that hopefully are paying off.

I have had problem skin my entire life acne, sensitivity. I have been sold every product under the sun wuth a promise it would help and never did. I finally took Accutane which cleared up my skin but made it even more confusing to buy products. I finally have the answer.

I read the book and took the quiz only to find out not only do I have sensitive skin but I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin. I threw out more than half my skin care products and bought several on Dr. Baumann's recommended list for my skin (dry, sensitive, wrinkled, non-pigmented). My skin has never been this clear no spots, no itchiness, no flaking, nothing but clear soft skin. I even feel comfortable going without makeup now. Even after the Accutane my nose still had a lot of clogged pores and even they seem to be clearing up now.

Despite what others have said Dr. Baumann is very upfront that she tests for several companies in fact she tests for so many that she is truly impartial many of the products she would test would be from competing companies. Common sense tells you this. I also liked the dietary recommendations for my skin type I have incorporated a few and have seen a difference.

This book is a must have for anyone it demystifies the skin care industry and helps you figure out what to use and what not to use. It gives options and information you cna use for a lifetime.

Buying beauty products no longer has to be a guessing game-where you try to sort through the hype and figure out what will work for you. In this book, Dr. Baumann takes all the guess work out of it. First she helps you evaluate and understand your skin's uniqueness. Then she shows exactly what products you need (and don't need to use) in day and night regimens customized to each skin type. Plus her advice is clear, credible and covers all the bases because she is not peddling her own skin care line, but has taken the time to evaluate and rate all the skin care products available.

Baumann is a true scientist, and I've never seen as comprehensive a skin care book as this one. And it's so valuable to finally know how to pick the right products and avoid the ones that will sit unused cluttering up my shelves.

I am only 23 years old, but I have had problem skin since pubertyredness, acne, large pores, hyperpigmentation from acnes, etc . I have tried all the new products gone to aestheticians, and nothing ever helped. I received this book as a birthday present and have been following Dr. Baumann's plan for OSPWs. Wow, what a difference. I am finally able to leave the house without makeup. The book was easy to navigate and despite what some have said does address falling in between categories. That's why you use number values to determine what category you are in. Anyways, I found this book invaluable and would highly reccommend it to anyone that feels hopeless about their skin.

The Naturally Clean Home: 150 Super-Easy Herbal Formulas for Green Cleaning

The Naturally Clean Home: 150 Super-Easy Herbal Formulas for Green CleaningThis book contains recipes for any cleaning product a person could ever want to use around their home, including carpet shampoo, laundry soap, garden and pest control (even deer), potpourri and sachets, tarnish remover, wood cleaners and polishes, computers and office equipment, oven cleaner, BBQ grills, wicker, cars, exterior siding (including stone and brick), and garden tools! And all of the ingredients are completely nontoxic. Not only that, it teaches you HOW to do the jobs and properly care for your home and items you own. It is an excellent all-around instruction book for green housekeeping in every sense.

I purchased this book in order to make my own natural cleaners rather than buying the commercial ones at the healthfood stores in order to save money. Initially you'll have to spend some money on buying essential oils(these cost the most) and so forth.

I have tried several of the recipes. The Tough Dirt & Grease floor cleaner works great. I've also tried a couple of the different copper cleaners on my Revereware pots and both worked great.

The castille based dish soap, I'm not too crazy about for several reasons, 1. the water turns white 2. it doesn't suds up much and 3. if you don't towel dry your glasses they look cloudy. I used Desert Essence castile soap with tea tree oil the first time and the second time I use Dr Bronners and both had the same results. My hands don't dry out but that didn't really balance out having to towel dry every dish. So I guess I'll be using BioKleens' dish soap again.

The overnight toilet bowl cleaner was just the same as adding plain borax, letting it sit for an hour or overnight and scrubing with a brush it just smelled nicer due to the essential oils.

Basically it came down to this: borax, washing soda, baking soda, white vinegar and castile soap, which all of us green cleaners keep on hand this book just tells you what essential oils to add to the mixture.

The author also has a section about drying your own herbs to make scouring powders and such. Baking soda is a fairly good scouring powder on it's own.

It does have very handy tips on how to clean everything in your house except for leather furniture.

You can find almost all of these recipes online on different green sites, but it is nice to have handy in a little book that tucks nicely away in the cleaning cabinet.

The index is rather confusing, if you are looking for say scouring powder it won't be listed under scouring powders, you would have to look under bathroom cleaners for them.

Overall the book is okay, but I guess I was hoping for more than just adding essential oils to everything.

Having read that the indoor pollution is far worse than the outdoor pollution because of toxic chemicals present in many of household cleaners, I wanted to switch to using more eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaners. I thought this book might teach me how to make effective cleaning formulas other than mixing baking soda and vinegar. The book does have many formulas for cleaning everything in the house, but so far it hasn't worked well.

Here is an example from the book (word for word);

No-Scrub toilet bowl cleaner

Use this one in toilet bowls that have an everlasting ring around them. (Like the kind you find in the bathroom of your vacation cabin after six months of nonuse.) You can employ this recipe just before going to bed; by morning, even the toughest of stains will have disappeared.

1 cup borax

1 cup vinegar

10 drops pine or lavender essential oil

5 drops lemon or lime essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a plastic bowl or bottle and pour all at once into the toilet bowl. Allow to sit overnight. In the morning, just flush!

If this formula works for you, then this book is probably right for you. As for me, I flushed the toilet in the morning and the stains were still there, clear as ever. I ended up cleaning with baking soda and vinegar and it did much better job getting rid of the ring.

I got this book for Christmas and have been putting the recipes in it to use ever since. You really can't beat the cleaning power of items like vinegar, baking soda, borax and castile soap. My house gets really clean with these recipes, and I feel good about using natural cleaning products that are safe for my children and pets. I now feel comfortable letting my 4 year old help me with cleaning I'm not exposing him to toxic fumes or harmful abrasives. It's also brilliant to only have a few things in the pantry for cleaning everything in the house (laundry included). I bought most of my supplies online (there is a list in the back of the book for online retailers who sell supplies). I began making the recipes in the book exactly as each recipe indicates. After a couple of months, I was able to eye-ball amounts and can mix things quickly on the fly now. I have also had a lot of fun playing with my own essential oil blends. When I finish cleaning, my house smells like the woods or like a citrus orchard instead of smelling of synthetic chemicals. This book is definitely a well-thumbed resource in my house!
