Living Alone and Loving It: A Guide to Relishing the Solo Life

Living Alone and Loving It: A Guide to Relishing the Solo LifeWhile the title of this book belittles its depth, I'm glad it was titled so simply. I am going through a divorce right now and living alone for the first time in my life. I'm trying to learn to live alone, so I have been drawn to self-help books on the topic. I went in wanting a self-help book, but this is much better. I didn't know what I needed. This book was it. Beautiful writing, practical suggestions, personal experiences and metaphors that really made me think It's all here.

This book is a celebration of living alone. It doesn't tell you how to bide your time while you wait for a new relationship to come along. It describes the very profound personal experiences of someone who has lived alone for a long time and is good at it. Reading it has made me feel lucky to have so much time to fill myself without the needs of another to consider. I probably will eventually meet someone else, and that is OK. But I know that for as long as I don't, I will be able to relish living alone as a perfectly wonderful (heck almost better) option.

Living alone doesn't have to mean being lonely. There's an attitude shift that can occur that can make it possible to feel interconnected with everyone who passes through our lives. After reading this book, I want to take that time to learn the banjo, write songs, and travel alone to Peru. I have also come to appreciate that although I am not in a relationship right now, nor am I ready to be in one, I can appreciate the male (and female) relationships I have in my life in a new way.

As an added bonus, Barbara Feldon write beautifully. "When we live alone time and freedom are at the service of our muse in a way that artists in a relationship might envy." Gems like this are woven throughout, along with well-chosen quotes from other authors. I like the ones by Rilke best.

I recommend this book unreservedly to anyone looking to find pleasure in solitude, meaning in life, a feeling of interconnectedness with the world, and themselves.

Loved the book because it was so helpful to me personally. I lost my wife to brain cancer 2 1/2 years ago and was having difficult time making it alone. The biggest help to me was the chapter on "Creativity is the quickest route to our truest selves."

For months now, I suppose like other grievors, maybe men more than women, I was always searching for another "partner" but of course no one could equal the woman I lost.

While in Vancouver over Christmas, I found this book, read it in one night, and my life has changed for the better.

Well, I wish Barbara could know how much help she has given to me,

and I wish she had put her e-mail address in the book so I could tell her simply that.

The author of this book, Barbara Feldon, was once on the series Get Smart, as the spy "99." She has been through a divorce and even though she started out nervous and felt lonely, she was able to live alone and finally appreciate it.

I was attracted to this book. I am always drawn to the books that emphasize how being "single" or "alone" is not a scary thing. In today's society, from friends or family, you are constantly pushed to be with another person, to get married or have kids. Even though this is everyone's right, it isn't the answer for everyone.

I was expecting a guided list of how to live alone and love it. This was not what was within the book. It was full of wisdom and life lessons. On some parts, I felt as though she were reading my mind what I was never able to verbalize.

She writes: "Living alone gives us the freedom to nourish the things we love wihtout the constraints of a partner's timetable or his or her conflicting desires." This is not to say that we can't fulfill our hobbies or our dreams with someone else there. I think the problem is that we become distracted with taking care of this other person, like having a constant guest in our home. When you live alone, there seems to be more time to get to know yourself and what you love.

This is not a "don't get involved with others in a romantic way." It's quite the contrary. Some people are deeply fulfilled by another person sharing their life, and others have too much they want to fulfill on their own. She writes. "...a love life is not a need like food and air, it's a desire. If we don't eat or breathe, we die; we don't die from unsatisfied passion. Having to set aside romance from time to time is only tormenting if we choose to view it that way."

I loved this passage. "I learned that there are ways to experience romance outside of sexual possession. I had savored for the first time what the sixteenth-century essayist Montaigne called 'passionate friendship': one that is deeply loving, unconditional, and heightened to the level of poetry. We delighted in each other's company, expressed ourselves freely, and brought out the best in each other. Not all conventional relationships call make those claims. There were so many delights that the lack of a sexual component wasn't felt as a deficit." I have experienced this very thing, but I couldn't describe it. There are more ways to connect than just with one person. We connect with people all of the time, but sometimes, we are too busy to notice, or don't put our finger on it why it felt so good to have a passing conversation with a stranger or acquaintance. You will never be lonely if you don't put yourself out there. (Spoken from a true introvert, who also tends to be shy as well.)

Does this mean that I won't couple up? No, I have a boyfriend. Does this mean that I would never get married? No, not exactly. What does this mean? The significance for me is that someone echoes my true feelings about being single. It's not evil, it's not lonely, it's just something that is easier to handle when you are comfortable and love yourself. It also gives you more time to travel around the world which I hope to do someday. If I find myself single again, I hope that I take advantage of all the things single life offered me.

I broke up with my fiance after deciding that the marriage didn't seem right. It was my first time in 7 years to be without a boyfriend.

At first, I was skeptical about how this book could help me since it seemed more like an autobiography than a manual.

Despite my doubts, this book turned out to be my mantra, especially the first chapter where Barbara Feldon discusses loneliness. One of the key observations was that some people think that they can get rid of loneliness just by enduring long boughts of it. However, she said that enduring loneliness won't help because contact with other humans is our lifeblood.

After being alone and then working on finding friends, I find this so true. Think about your happy memories. Isn't it based upon people or friends? Mine are, and I am much happier to find human support.

My other favorite chapter is the chapter on financial matters. The reason that I like it is because she explains that money means freedom. That just rang so true to my life.

Anyway, I took the advice in the book. I am not lonely anymore. I have a lot of friends now. I don't have any lovers now. I am happy, and my life is healing from the sores of insecurity and sadness that unhappy relationships can bring. Thanks Barbara for your wonderful insight. I wish you the same happiness that I have.

This book was very insightful. It is well written and a "must read" for anyone needing an uplift. Regardless of being married or single, it will bring a smile to your face. It is obvious that Barbara Feldon (the author) has a positive out look and she is willing to share that happiness with her readers. I hope she writes another book.

Among other causes, contemporary building materials and airtight construction have resulted in an explosion of mold contamination in both private homes and public buildings. Vicki Lankarge has clearly researched her subject thoroughly. Her very readable book provides timely and helpful information on assessing mold contamination and finding ways to deal with it--including useful sections on cleaning infestations and dealing with insurance companies, local authorities and state agencies.

Lively writing, vivid examples, and concrete suggestions for dealing with mold and the problems it causes characterize this

fine work.

Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: The Knee Owner's Manual

Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: The Knee Owner's ManualTotal Knee Replacement & Rehabilitation is written by a surgeon (Daniel Brugioni) and a physiotherapist (Jeff Falkel), both well-qualified and specialists in this topic. Dr Falkel's own bilateral knee replacement both knees at the same time was an eye-opener to him and changed his own approach to managing knee replacement patients.

The number of people having total knee replacement is due to massively increase as post-war baby boomers start to hit their sixties, but this is unfortunately occurring at a time when health insurance companies around the world are tightening up on cost containment. The authors recognise that rehabilitation after total knee replacement is long, and insurance companies already do not fund adequate physiotherapy time. This book was written to support the knee replacement patient with practical advice for a full year after surgery.

The first two chapters give an overview of arthritis and current approaches to slowing its progression and improving quality of life. Knee replacement is discussed in some detail basic design considerations, bilateral knee replacement and how to go about finding a competent surgeon. Question and answer sessions complete each chapter.

There is a useful pre-surgery chapter, advising on getting your home ready for your return from hospital and giving useful exercise regimes for building up strength to facilitate the use of crutches or a walker after surgery. What to expect once you arrive at the hospital and on the day of your operation are covered in some detail, but detail of the surgical process itself has been deliberately minimised. Potential complications are, however, covered in an appendix.

From this point on the book really fleshes out, and focuses on rehabilitation, taking the reader day by day through carefully chosen exercise regimes, all explained and fully illustrated. Through the early days on the ward, then home, and beyond are all covered in significant detail, using for the greater part readily available household items as rehabilitation aids.

There are several sections on scar management. Bathroom aids are discussed. Range-of-motion exercises, strengthening exercises, balance exercises, endurance exercises all are discussed and illustrated, and carefully graduated as time progresses, right the way to a full return to normal activities. Question and answer sessions accompany each chapter, and an index of the exercises is available in its own appendix for ready reference.

This book will be extremely useful to anyone contemplating total knee replacement.

This is an excellent book for anyone thinking of having TKR. I would suggest that you read it prior having your surgery and keep it next to you during rehab. The information contained in this book answered many of the questions my husband has had. He refers to it on a daily basis for exercises and scar management. Now he is 9 weeks post surgical and he walks with no pain, no canes or braces and he is 83. The exercises in this book have been much more advanced than he received in Physical Therapy. It is great having a P. Therapist who has been through the surgery write about his experience.

My wife had total knee replacement surgery on one leg last June. When a friend and co-worker who had had both knees done (at the same time!) visited her in the hospital, she raved about this book and said it had helped her recovery greatly... even offered to give my wife her copy! Since the friend was doing so well only 6 weeks after her operation, I was very impressed and immediately ordered it. My wife, who is a registered nurse, has found it full of useful information and helpful exercises. Although she knew a lot about the process of knee replacement, she felt that this book clearly explains the process for the lay person. The authors stress the importance of strengthening your leg muscles before surgery. The post surgery exercises are intended to guide you through your first year of post-op healing. Lots of clear photos take the mystery out of this medical miracle and help you take charge of your own rehabilitation. If you are considering knee replacement, this book will improve your chances of returning to pain-free walking again!

I am in recovery of bilateral TKR. Have read 4 other titlesworthless.

But this book is tremendous. Every one should read it before their surgery and have right by their side during their recovery. I'm getting copies for my surgeon, parish nurse, and my therapists. The exercises are super with excellent pictures and descriptions.

I love this book! It got me through some really tough times. Because the authors have been through major surgery and one had bilateral TKR's, they know from where they speak. I bet I read the book 10 times while I was rehabing.

My only criticism, and it's minor, is the timelines for rehab seem a bit overambitious. I'm "only" 57 and some of the rehab was tough for me. I found myself questioning if I was really coming along as well as I thought at times. Just remember, regardless of age, everybody heals differently.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone undergoing TKR. Buy it BEFORE surgery.

Sculpting Her Body Perfect - 3rd Edition

Sculpting Her Body Perfect - 3rd EditionFitness is my passion and I'm always reading books and articles about fitness. After a while, a lot of the information starts to sound the same. What a refreshing relief to have found this book! This is the first book that I can say that I really learned something from in years. It is divided into three parts; body conditioning, toning and shaping and advanced bodysculpting. While there is good info throughout the book, I found the advanced bodysculpting chapters to be of particular benefit. These chapters show how certain exercises can be combined to achieve optimal definition. The sample routines are great and demonstrate exactly how to incorporate the concepts into a total fitness program.

Overall, the book is very well written and easy to understand. It's a great reference that I'll use time and again.

The first half of the book is pretty basic info that I did not find as useful as someone might who is new to resistance training. The latter half of the book outlines how to sculpt your body. For each major muscle group the author classifies exercises into three categories depending on what parts of the muscles are being worked. By doing some or all the exercise he suggests, you can sculpt your body. What I find really useful is to know each of the categories so that I can ensure that I am working all parts of my back, for example. Now I can see that there may be times that I was doing two exercises that were working the same areas. When developing my program, I will refer to each category and make sure I have selected exercises that will cover all the categories.

The book does have some flaws. The author stresses at the beginning of the book that it is important to know what muscles you are working so that you can focus on them while exercising. But when he illustrates each exercise, he does not tell you which specific muscles you are working. Most other books will list the latin names of the muscles you are working, and some even illustrate the specific muscles, which is quite useful. He suggests a limited number of exercises for each category. Some of the exercises he mentions you can't find in the book (such as "spider curls"). When you look at the illustrated exercises, he does not tell you what category it is working. You have to keep referring back to an earlier page to figure that out. There are so many more exercises you could do for each of the categories but he does not mention them. It would have been nice if he had a chart of exercises that you could do without having to illustrate all of them. The book does not have an index either.

Conclusion: I don't think the book warrants the rave reviews it's received on amazon.com and could have been organized better, but half of the book has useful info. When I first started to read it I was going to return it because the first half of the book wasn't telling me anything I didn't know already. The body sculpting section has good info that I will incorporate into my program, so I have decided to keep the book.

Brad Schoenfeld does a wonderful job with this book. It is well thought out -and moves you from the beginning exercises to the advanced. I have been doing the beginner exercises for about 8 weeks now and have seen a tremendous improvement in my body -and my energy as well.

It is imperitive that you have access to a gym to work out. Or else you will have to have an extensive gym in your home.

I really learned a lot from this book -and have every intention to continue my work outs. I know that I can get to the advanced levels -but I am moving slowly so that I don't injure myself.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about starting a weight lifting program. I have learned more from this book than from the "personal trainers" at my gym.

Kudos to Brad!!

Over the past year, I had went through a very difficult period in my life and wound up gaining more than 20 pounds. I had always been thin and this really had a traumatic impact on me. Combined with all the other hardships that had happened, I was very depressed about my life.

Although my personal problems resolved, I still carried the extra weight. I tried several exercise programs and diets but none really worked and I felt frustrated about everything. I started to believe that I would never be able to get back to where I was.

Then, I was reading Fitness magazine and learned about Brad's book. I was skeptical but decided to give it a try. Upon reading it, I immediately got a good feeling. His words were really motivational and I realized all the reasons that my workouts never really worked. The program was easy to follow and the sample routines were extremely helpful.

After a little less than 3 months, I have followed the program religiously and my results have been nothing short of fantastic! I feel I'm in the best shape of my life. I am back to being a size 4, but my clothes fit even better than they did before. I have more energy and I have muscle tone in places that I didn't even know muscles existed! I am indebted to Brad and his message for helping me regain my self-image and feel great again.

Ok, this is a book for women that really want change and are willing to work for it. I feel very sorry for you women out there that say, "Why should we look like models, it's men like the author that make us feel ugly!" Having a healthy body does not mean you have to look like a model. What makes "you" happy is what is important. It make me happy to not jiggle... Since I have started using this book, about 1.5 months ago, I have defintion in my arms, shoulders, my back is broadening, and my thighs are showing signs of muslces. It makes me happy, and I am not doing it for anyone but me. I really like it because it really doesn't take a lot of time. It's hard and short. That's much better than wasting your time on a lot of non sense exercises getting you no where. I am 36 and I have lost 1/2 inch from my things, and 1 inch from my waist. Oh! Let me tell you to judge by the tape measure. I hve noticed I put on 2 pounds, but my measurements have gotten smaller.... GREAT BOOK! Lee

Rejuvenation: Using the Power of Light to Increase Vitality, Energy and Healing: Low Level Laser The

Rejuvenation: Using the Power of Light to Increase Vitality, Energy and Healing: Low Level Laser Therapy at HomeI was looking for more in depth treatment protocols using cold laser and was disappointed that this book was so short on those kind of details. Still, I have used the laser pointer the author suggests on various small problems with limited success. Thus, I purchased a Vityas cold laser unit with a much higher nanometer rating for in-home use, and have found greater success with it. The unit also included a fairly comprehensive book on Cold Laser Protocols. In my opinion, this book is for people who are afraid of cold laser due to the media's distorted attitude toward it. It will help "kick out the jams" so that people are more comfortable with using such a wonderful technology to heal oneself.

I have learned that low level/cold laser has been used in Russia and all over Europe and Asia for over 40 years. Like everything else related to natural healing and homeopathy, Europe is light years ahead of the American medical community in progressive treatment of diseases. Cold Laser saved me from having to endure surgery on both my back and knee sustained in a fall down a flight of stairs. It also cured a long standing problem from a botched surgery when the surgeon sutured a nerve tract that caused me such burning pain I could not function at times. I have had over 200 cold laser treatments and I swear by it.

About a year ago I purchased this book and started doing the protocols. My review appears above. Because I was still drinking coffee and not doing the ten-minute therapy twice a week, my problems probably persisted longer than they would has I had been more sensible. Nevertheless, I am now just about 100% cured of peripheral neuropathy. It has been about two months since I have felt any burning sensation in my feet, calves, or sometimes arms. And hardly ever in the last month or so do I feel even a twinge of numbness. Prior to giving up the coffee, about three months ago, I had thought the pain would become more and more insufferable. However, as I say, now it is as good as gone. I'm am truly very appreciative of Dr. DelRe.

I have been weightlifting for over 6 years now, and through the years of shoulder and lower back injuries, I was in need of some serious help. When I found this book on Amazon, I was skeptical at first. Treating muscle injuries with an ordinary 5mw red laser pointer (which is one of those laser pointers kids play with) didn't make much sense to me. However, I could not afford expensive medical treatments, so I decided to give laser therapy a try.

After reading the book, I followed the instructions and started treating my left rotator cuff. I must note here that I could hardly work out my shoulders due to my rotator cuff problems. Surprisingly, within a week of treatment, I found my left shoulder recovering faster than ever before. After three weeks of treatment, the pain in my rotator cuff completely disappeared.

Dr.DelRe's book is easy to read, and the illustrations in the book guides you every step of the treatment. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a therapy that is painless... for you and for your wallet. -Sang Yong

First thing is: I don't trust reviews on Amazon or many other places. People are not critical enough in this "feel good" culture we live in. So I'll cut to the chase: I have lots of inflammation and have been looking for help. I have been using cold laser therapy for 3 weeks and so far so good. The best way I can describe it is that it has a sedative effect on angry tissues. His book gives you a history and overview and a deep understanding that money and medicine most of the time do not mix. This therapy is inexpensive relatively speaking, but the reason you don't hear about it is doctors cant get rich healing people with it. But that doesnt mean it is not effective.

Most of the book is instructions on how to use it with various inflammatory maladies.....some you will be able to relate to. His writing is detailed but not complicated. Keep an open mind to this technology. Most of us have tried too many things that do not work.

(This review is for the "Rejuvenation: Using the Power of Light to Increase Vitality, Energy and Healing" book by Dr. Lawrence DelRe.)

As far as the physical book goes, this is a short, well written, clear book with some colour pictures too. It is a large format 8.5 by 11 inches soft cover book, with large font high quality print and paper, which is very easy to read and easy on the eyes. It is definitely not a highly technical book with confusing jargon. And as a bonus, it has good grammar and spelling throughout. For about $20-$25, it is a great value too.

It is an open and candid book with lots of interesting topics. Well, it is really all about one topic, but covers many health or bodily conditions for which a simple Laser Pointer may be beneficial. It is an interesting book and you will have a hard time not finishing it in one sitting. The recommendations for the treatments come across quite careful and cautious. Like, really, how much could a few minutes with a single 5mW (or even a 100mW) diffused laser diode held near the skin harm you? But it makes great promises and gives you hope that you can be instrumental in improving your own health without taking expensive drugs that could have unpleasant, and sometimes even detrimental, side-effects.

Do these treatments with a simple Laser Pointer really work? At this point I do not know that and would like to do an update later on when I have tried some of Dr. DelRe's suggestions. It is also very intriguing that most manufacturers of expensive medical quality laser devices, costing thousands of dollars, sometimes recommend lengthy multiple daily treatments (at least initially) for weeks, while Dr. DelRe advocates a `homeopathic' approach that no more than a few minutes a couple of times a week, tapering down to about once a month or even once a year, can yield such dramatic improvements in your health.

In summary, this is a surprisingly well written short book on treating various minor and major health conditions with a basic Laser Pointer. It is certainly an exciting read. Of course, this book is not a thesis on cold laser therapy, but to the best of my knowledge, no other book currently encourages and outlines the use of an inexpensive Laser Pointer for human therapeutic purposes.
