Warrior Cardio: The Revolutionary Metabolic Training System for Burning Fat, Building Muscle, and Ge

Warrior Cardio: The Revolutionary Metabolic Training System for Burning Fat, Building Muscle, and Getting FitOk, I will be the first to admit, that the title says it all: "Warrior Cardio." Maybe that should have been a clue that this is going to go way beyond what most people are looking for in a workout book. I am a middle-aged guy, getting back in shape, and from the title was hoping to find some new ways to do cardio that were not mind-numbing like a treadmill or elliptical trainer. I got the book the other day, and while I normally wait to review items until I have used them for a time, I wanted to get this up so others don't make the mistake I did. With return fees, it isn't worth me sending the book back and I will be able to use a couple exercises in here in my daily routine. I kknow that a lot of times, these workout book reviews get jammed with groupies or friends of the author trying to hype the book but I am neither. I am the average joe, sitting in my office, avoiding that painfully long project report by shopping on Amazon. So, here goes:

I gave the books 4 stars because there are a lot of positives in it:

I found some good nutritional information, but the overall diet is a bit more than I am looking for.

The book is beautifully photographed, the exercises pretty well staged out as well as you can get in a book and it seems to have a good flow to it.

all of the models are very buff and good looking, and will inspire you to push the workout a little harder.

My one complaint I am not complaining because I am average fitness guy would would need two simpler workout programs to build to this one is that some of the workouts are REALLY unrealistic in normal people's homes or regular gyms. My gym does not have truck tires for me to push all over. I don't have room at my house for a full sled to tie to myself and drag around the yard. And I have never seen barbells with special handles on them for me to carry around doing lunges. So for the average person, unless you are in MMA or something like that and have access to a professional gym that has this equipment, some of these are going to go way beyond what we can do. I did like some of the bodyweight exercises some of them I will build up to, but they seem to be a good challenge.

Also, the book isn't really about just Cardio. A lot of the exercises are muscle building or would not be a cardio exercise unless you had the strength to do them quickly enough to count as cardio.

So, overall it is visually one of the nicest workout books I have seen in a while. The logic behind the program seems sound. But it is not for beginners or maybe even intermediate level people. If you are an athlete and have 8% body fat and muscles lord love you if you do then this book would definately take you to the next level, if you have access to the equipment. I just wish they had been more clear about the level of the workouts the "getting fit" part is a little misleading.

No disrespect to the authors here, because they obviously know what they are talking about and their enthusiasm shows in the book. It was just not quite what I thought it would be and I don't have room for truck tires or weight sleds to try and follow the program at home. I would rupture something if I even tried.

I've been following Martin Rooney and Training For Warriors for a while now, but I am always a little nervous when it comes time to see a fitness book. This book did not disappoint.

As an MMA fighter, a personal trainer, and a fitness nut I was very interested in seeing what this book was all about, so, like any reasonable person I preordered it. Okay, I'll admit that this was the first book I have ever preordered... I was a little nervous. This book is page after page of different exercises, circuits, tips, methodologies, inspirations and pure knowledge. I am amazed at the simplicity of the breakdown of the book. He breaks it down into different sections based on the type of circuit, from there he breaks every circuit up into different body types. Each type of circuit has an instructional section followed by different interval and repetition suggestions.

On top of all the fitness instructions, Rooney includes a nutrition section. Now everyone might not agree but as a personal trainer I love that he did not just include a "Here's what to eat for 4 weeks" guide. Rooney goes through and breaks down nutrition in a very easy to understand way. Not only does it include tips for what to avoid, what to eat, and such for loosing weight, but also for gaining weight and mass (something usually overlooked in general fitness books).

I suppose if I was going to have a complaint it would be that some of the pages seem to be missing of few steps in the instructional photos. I have been doing this for a while, so I can fill in the spaces, but I could see how a beginner could get confused. Let me say though, that with almost 400 pages of FULL COLOR photos, this is hardly a negative.

In conclusion, I tore through this book in one day and threw two of the circuits together (which tore through me). I recommend this book to anyone looking to get in shape or improve their game. The great thing about circuits is that they can be tailored to any fitness level or athletic ability. Great job and congratulations to Martin Rooney!

In the foreword to Martin Rooney's new book, WARRIOR CARDIO, Top 10 ranked UFC Lightweight, Jim Miller tells us "In the 3 years I have been following the Training for Warriors system, I have changed from a tough local-level fighter into a professional athlete. I have fought ten times for the UFC, going 9-1 over that span and I am ranked Top 10 in the World. I have not only been able to pack on 10 pounds of muscle and add hundreds of pounds to my lifts, but I have also stayed healthy."

So let's consider that. Top ranked, 10 pounds of muscle (remember, combat sport has demanding weight categories), strong and healthy. Sounds like a triple win.

WARRIOR CARDIO is the distillation of Martin Rooney's formidable experience. He has worked with athletes from the UFC, NBA, NFL, Olympians, armed forces and Division 1 colleges. Moreover, he himself has performed at the highest levels in a number of disciplines. So he's the embodiment of practicing what he preaches. And this, for me, is the clincher. What he says, is what he does and I can tell you, it's infectious.

If you are familiar with Training for Warriors and Ultimate Warrior Workouts you will know Rooney Rule #1 "We don't do something for nothing". WARRIOR CARDIO is designed, without compromise, to get you fight ready, whether that fight is getting in the best shape possible or preparing to go 5 rounds in the ring. No knowledge or experience of martial arts or combat sport is required. Training for Warriors is aimed at each and every one of us. If you have any doubts just read Martin's blog, you'll feel better for it, I promise.

WARRIOR CARDIO breaks down in to three sections.

Part One

Getting Started, gives an initial view of what we have come to consider "cardio". Martin's long time mentor Dr Tony Caterisano gives us the Science. It's a wonderfully concise overview of the various energy systems along with a solid breakdown on the nuts and bolts of WARRIOR CARDIO. If you want the why, this is it. It will have you question many of the practices that have become conventional wisdom. It will also introduce you to a way of training that banishes boring cardio in exchange for a comprehensive system that provides incredible bang for your buck.

Mental Cardio is essential reading. Martin knows about coaching. I am not talking about teaching an exercise or providing a workout. I am talking about the ability to engage at the deepest level. Mental Cardio looks at the components of building a resilient athlete from the inside out. Some folk will want to skim over this section. I strongly advise that you sit down, read it thoroughly and apply. Taking the time to do this might be the best investment you can make.

Warrior Performance Self Evaluation. If you want to know where you are going you have to know where you are at. There are separate Speed and Power Tests and an eye opening Endurance Test. Once again, everything is laid out and ready to apply. You'll be able to rate your performance for each test which gives you an invaluable benchmark to work from.

Warrior Prehab 15 lays out a top to toe routine with 15 carefully chosen drills. This stuff is standard issue within the Warrior Cardio 12 week program and it might just be the nicest thing you can do to your body. People are quick to jump in to the deep end. The key to staying injury free is taking your time to get the body moving through a natural range of motion. WP15 is the answer.

Warrior Cardio Warm Up. Here's another aspect that we are quick to skim over. This warm up with challenge you. There are a number of dynamic drills, mapped out in sequence. There's no doubt that you'll be familiar with many of these. But I can bet you don't do them! Once you are familiar with the drills it's easy to mix and match. Failing that, the drills are integrated into the 12 week program.

Part Two takes us right in to the Metabolic Training section where everything is explained in detail with accompanying photographs. You will find all manner of tools and enough variety to challenge and engage even pickiest prospect. Martin maps out the 10 Commandments of Metabolic Training then delivers -

Energy Circuits,

TFW's trademark Hurricanes

Barbell, Dumbbell & Kettlebell Circuits

Bodyweight training

Speciality Strength Circuits

Sprint Training

Finishers

Core workouts.

It is a complete toolbox incorporating everything you can lay your hands on. Challenging? Yes. Boring? No way.

Part Three focuses on -

Nutrition for Warriors. Martin has brought in the talents of Dr John Berardi and his team to give us a resoundingly sensible approach to how we fuel our bodies. Berardi's Precision Nutrition is one of the most respected nutrition programs available. Here we get a no gimmicks approach, focussing of the kind of foods athletes eat to maintain muscle, get lean and perform at the highest level. It's a relief to see real food front and centre. The supplements section is practical look at what actually delivers, listing the benefits of ten key supplements and how to ingrate them in to your diet. Information on gaining, losing and cutting weight rounds out this Nutrition for Warriors. Again, the approach is practical and informed by people who actually do this, week in, week out.

Warrior Cardio 12 Week Program. It makes a lot of sense to read this book cover to cover before jumping in to the 12 Week program. The 12 week program maps out three sessions per week. Each comes complete with Prehab and Warm Up drills followed by Metabolic Training and finishing with a brief Core Training session. If you really want to understand and benefit from Martin's years of experience, I suggest you "absorb what is useful" and get to applying it!

The book contained a lot of great information. I especially enjoyed the workouts that were presented by the author. I've had great workouts utilizing the information and workout plans that are found in the book. My biggest complaint is that in the schedule, many of the exercises that the author tells you to perform do not make sense because they are not "titled" to match the wording or verbiage used throughout the book. For example, a Monday workout will tell to perform "all mini plyo hops and movement drills" which is easy to understand because those exercises maintain the same title/verbiage in the book. The problem comes when executing, say a Tuesday workout, where the book tells you to perform "all muscle activation exercises" and you're left to try and figure out what exercises these are because they are not referred to as such anywhere in the book! If each workout maintained specific verbiage it would be a 5-Star rating. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to utilize the information completely because I'm left to try and figure out exactly what exercises the author is recommending on specific days.

Intuitive Eating, 3rd Edition

Intuitive Eating, 3rd EditionIntuitive Eating encompasses ten principles, but the main three (3) keys are these:

* Unconditional permission to eat when hungry and what food is desired

* Eating for physical rather than emotional reasons

* Reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues to determine when and how much to eat

I have been a big fan & promoter of this method since I first heard about it in 2005. Using its principles, I lost twenty-five pounds in six months while eating my favorite things (chocolate, ice cream, cheeseburgers, pizza, etc).

In this latest edition of the book, the authors have removed many of the numbers that were in the previous edition (stats, weights, heights) because they believe that it leads to self-sabotage when these are the focus. They have also added two new chapters -one that gives scientific backing to prove that IE works, and the other that focuses on how to help children and teens become Intuitive Eaters.

The chapter on kids was actually very interesting to me, as I have two of my own (ages 11 & 14), one of which is very rebellious in regards to food -he loves chips & ice cream, and it worries me that he's learning all of my own bad habits. The authors insist, though, that letting kids make their own decisions regarding food (how much, what kinds, etc) is the best method because they will intuitively get in the balanced nutrition they need, if they're left alone. It's when an issue is made of their eating habits or their weight that they start to rebel, and/or lose faith in their ability to trust their internal cues.

One thing that surprised me about this new edition was the constant reminder of how it's important to put weight loss on the back burner in the beginning of this process. The reason for this is that, if you're focused on losing weight -as opposed to just learning how to become an Intuitive Eater -you will sabotage yourself by either getting depressed over the slowness of your weight loss progress, or by seeking out other diets in hopes of quicker results.

Here are some quotes from the book that I found helpful (some of which I forgot to write the page number references for):

* bring peace to your eating life and body image (p.32)

* focus on weight loss MUST be put on the back burner while you learn to return to Intuitive Eating

* If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating (chp.1)

* undereating leads to overeating

* you can't fail at IE -it's a learning process at every point along the way (p.53)

* the more you practice, the more confidence you'll have (p.86)

* focus on continual change and learning, and start thinking in terms of what you can learn along the way (p.119)

* pause in the middle of eating to gauge your hunger level, and to ask yourself how the food tastes

* give yourself permission to eat again when you get hungry

* if you start eating when you're not hungry, it's hard to know when to stop from satiety (p.128)

* slow down while eating

* It's what you eat consistently, over time, that matters -progress, not perfection...

* Intuitive Eating means having no guilt in your eating (p.301)

Lastly, there is a chapter on eating disorders, too, and how those caught in the throes of one can seek help, and also learn to eat intuitively.

Overall, I most highly recommend this book, and this method. It is very much based on common sense, and we all know that dieting doesn't work in the long run, anyway. This method is great because you can still eat what you love, you can eat out at restaurants without worrying about blowing your `diet', and you can lose the craziness of obsessing over what food is "good/bad".

It must have been fate or divine intervention, but this book came at the perfect time for me. I had pre-ordered the 3rd edition of the book months before (waiting on the new chapter on teaching children intuitive eating), forgot I had ordered it, and in the mean time went on my usual roller coaster of dieting then overeating and gained and lost the same 5-10 lbs. I had just started a protein only diet to lose those 10 lbs again and was MISERABLE when this book arrived in the mail. I stopped my diet immediately and devoured the book in a couple days. After only a week with this book, I can already tell it will be a lifesaver for me.

It made me realize the reasons why I am overeating, which has helped me stop the cycle more than any diet rule ever has. I also am learning to enjoy my food and really savor it, leading me to eat less. I have also started exercising again, but more gentle and enjoyable exercise than when I was dieting. My biggest accomplishment so far was when I made a batch of real chocolate chip cookies, savored ONE, and felt truly satisfied. Before I would have either eaten the entire batch in a day or would not have made them at all and use substitutes that never really met the craving (leading me to over eat the cookies whenever I got my hands on them). I am still early in the process, but I can already see that this will be a healthy, balanced and enjoyable way to eat for the rest of my life.

I am starting to incorporate the chapter on intuitive eating for children (I have two preschoolers). It is scary letting my kids have what they want, I have been controlling their food intake and limiting sweets since they were born. I think this process will be harder than the work on myself. But I know it will be worth it in the end.

I pre-ordered this book after buying the 1st edition online. While the first was interesting it was seriously lacking for the times so I contacted the authors on their facebook page with questions. They let me kow that it was totally revised and had two new chapters including one about children (something I'd been wondering about since I have children). So I preordered it. Couldn't be happier. This isn't a book you sit and read quick, you have to read and work through each chapter and really think about stuff.

Don't expect this read like a gimmicky cheap diet book because It isn't a diet book! There are no before and after pictures! There is no diet lurking in the back half of the book! Refreshing, annoying at first but refreshing (no one to physically compare myself to---awesome!, Refreshing, while there is nutrition in the back they really tell you take what you want and leave the rest! REFRESHING!!

I'm just now getting to the chapter about children which is very interesting.

I've also started blogging about my experiences and become active on the official IE forum on the website.

If you are tired of diets, tired of nutrition companies whether it be food companies or pill companies telling you what you need, tired of emotional eating and what to find what causes you to overeat, and much more THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

It's so sad now to realize all the money and time I wasted in my life following or researching diets. Seeing the pain my friends and loved ones put themselves through to lose weight. They say in the book that America needs a diet attitude adjustment and they sure are right!

UPDATE: 1/3/2013

I got this book right in the middle of my pregnancy. I was told by my doctor 11-15 lbs was my weight gain limit...20 lbs max. So after frustratingly trying to count calories or eat "right" I still gained weight. I got the book in August when it was released and had my baby in December. I gained 30 lbs total and really only emotionally/boredom ate the last two weeks because really...who wouldn't being going nuts with an overdue baby inside her? Even though my doctors weren't too happy I couldn't "control myself" and not gain weight my body knew what it was doing!

I'm pleased to say this works. Yes you have to work through a lot of emotional stuff (which I'd been working on the first half of the year before IE). ANYWAY two weeks postpartum I was back within 1 lb, ONE POUND! of where I had been pre-pregnancy. I won't weigh myself again until the 6 week checkup and I doubt I will weigh myself ever again after that.

IE is easy, a pleasure, and the online community on the website is a phenomenal support system when you need to get yourself focused again. ESPECIALLY with January "diet month" being here. I can eat out or cook at home and not worry about calories, fat, points, whatever. I eat what I want, when I'm hungry, with pleasure, and stop when I'm satisfied to full.

Also I will add that I lost 3 lbs after reading the book (most likely water weight) then gained 1 lb a month for the next three months, only gaining the last 10 lbs of my weight (baby/water/etc) in the last month of my pregnancy. My body has recovered so much quicker than my first pregnancy and I feel so much better and attuned to my body. The only thing I had trouble with the first two weeks postpartum was watching my portions. I let myself eat like the hungry girl I was because for so many months I had the portioned-appetite of a squirrel....lol..now at three weeks things are balancing out.

I have been a fan of Intuitive Eating for several years now. I discovered the book during a time when I was struggling with disordered eating, having obsessive thoughts about food and my body that were making it hard to focus on anything else in my life. I have since read the book several times, and it has helped me to make peace with food and my body. I'm constantly talking about Intuitive Eating to my friends and family, because I truly believe that it can make so many people live happier, more balanced lives, free from diet worries or obsessive thoughts about food or being the ideal body size.

And this new edition is fantastic! As someone who has read the previous edition more than once, I can tell that it's been completely revised, and I appreciate the two new chapters as well-one about the science behind Intuitive Eating (which I think is great for those people who really need to see scientific evidence in order to buy into something) and another about how to raise children to be Intuitive Eaters (something I think is quite important in today's society, as more and more children are suffering from obesity and disordered eating).

If you've been on too many diets, and are tired of constantly worrying about what you "should" or "shouldn't" eat, it's time to read this book! I truly credit this philosophy with giving me my life back, and I feel that it can do the same for so many people if they just take the time to read it and live it. You won't regret it!

My nutritionist at my university lent me this book to read. I thought it would be like all of the "Weight Loss" books. It is not. You really have to read the first couple of chapters and understand when they say you can eat what you want it doesn't mean NOT to eat healthy. They are referring to when you have strong urges to not to deprive yourself of it. I saw a reviewer saying that she gained tons of weight, well she did a lot of things wrong. Obviously, you can't always expect to eat junk food and lose weight. You have to incorporate fruits, vegetables, and exercise into your diet; there's no going around that period. This book has taught me to learn to listen to my stomach and my body, so that I can stop eating when I'm full. Because of this I gained not one pound during Thanksgiving Break and in the last 2 weeks with excercising for an hr three times a week have lost 4 and a half pounds. True story.

How to Shit in the Woods, 3rd Edition: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost Art

How to Shit in the Woods, 3rd Edition: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost ArtThis book was more about being a book than being an informational guide. It's filled with all sorts of interesting facts that you may have never knew, and there's equally as many pleasing stories to help the book float along. However, if you took the practical information from this book you could put it all on a pamphlet of just a few pages.

To sum up the entire book:

Chapter 1. Why we poo, and the history of the toilet along with some amusing stories. Not practical.

Chapter 2. Dig your hole 6-8 inches deep because that's where bacteria that will help decompose your poo reside. Don't poo below the waterline or even the flood waterline, and do not do it close to any water source, and be mindful that It runs down hill.

Chapter 3. When you just can't dig a hole, figure it out. Lean back or spread wide then pack your poo out.

Chapter 4. Be sure to filter your water so you don't get the runs. If you do get the runs then be sure to clean up properly and leave no trace.

Chapter 5. For women, so admittedly I skimmed, but not much there that isn't common sense.

Chapter 6. When you have no T.P., try not to use plants. If you do, try to use dead plants and brush. If you have to use a live plant then do not massacre an entire plant or branch to satisfy your needs. Be selective and gather from multiple sources and use your common sense when using plants because some are sticky or pointy etc. As far as non-living T.P. goes, well, anything that works will work.

The author gives several very good suggestions for dealing with biological necessities when you're away from civilization.

There are two main schools of thought about human waste in the wild. Bury it or pack it out. The author gives several good suggested methods for both. She clearly favors packing it out, and makes a compelling case for it.

Whichever mindset you favor, the author gives several good, specific examples of ways to implement it.

I've been going out in the woods a long time, but my wife is all city and was having the hardest time outdoors. Worse, she never wanted to talk about it. She would say it's too private. So I got this book and read it. Then I left it laying around until it wound up on her night stand. What a relief! Firstwith all of my camping experience I found out I didn't know as much as I thought I did. I learned alot, especially about how the laws and common practices have changed since I grew up. Plus, I read many good ideas I'd just never thought of before. As for my wifeshe no longer dreads camping and we have a much better time together outdoors. Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourette's: A Patient and Family Guide

Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourette's: A Patient and Family GuideThis book is perfect for families looking for "alternative" treatments for tics syndromes. Our elementary school child had frequent tics which were not resolving on their own. We did not want to put him on drugs because of all the possible side effects that people we knew had told us about.

This book explains possible causes of tics and gives terrific suggestions and things to try with your child. We started off with avoiding some of the triggers that the author Sheila Rogers mentions. Amazingly, after a week the tics went away!! This gave us confidence that this wasn't some permanent condition that we just had to live with. Once we understood more about how a faulty immune system could likely be an underlying cause, something the book describes well, we found a doctor to help us with testing and natural treatments--so far it has mostly been diet change and over the counter supplements. The book also helps guide you to the right kind of doctor for this, since most neurologists today still tend to teach acceptance or provide drugs. I see this book as a 'must read' before going the route of drugs.

Our son's tics are completely gone and we no longer have to avoid as many triggers now that his immune system is stronger. The side benefits are that our son is sleeping better and has more energy. It scares me to think we could have put him on drugs to mask the symptoms instead of addressing the underlying cause.

Families reading this should know that the book doesn't give a one-size-fits-all formula, which unfortunately doesn't seem to exist yet, but rather a list of things that you can try with your child. The parent must still be a detective and the process takes diligence. I have spent countless hours searching the internet for solutions, and I thought this book provided by far the most comprehensive explanation I have ever seen about what can cause tics and what can be done to minimize and even eliminate them.

The book has not only the theory, but also practical ideas that really make a difference. The success stories alone are touching and very encouraging. Our family is proof that the methods can work. It is such a joy and relief to see my son so happy and his face and body so relaxed.

My son was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome a few years ago. We went through the wringer with everything from anti-ADHD agents to anti-depressants, etcetera. What I have found is that he is 150% better...but only because of natural remedies. Vitamin supplementation, diet, exercise, and cognitive strategies have been far more helpful than the poisons the psychiatrist prescribed. However, I am not anti-medication...I am only anti-med when it comes to my son's treatment. Why? Because the psych meds just don't seem to work for him.

I think it's sad that so many parents out there blindly follow the "doctor's orders." If your child has been diagnosed with TS, please buy this book. It's worth a try. Also, check out Latitudes and BrainTalk. Both are online communities that have tons to offer in the way of alternative treatments and support/friendship.

If your child is worse on the meds...If you're sick of the doctors not listening...If you're scared of long-term med side-effects...If you've reached the end of your rope...Remember: nothing changes if nothing changes. It's worth a try.

There is hope to be had...

After a diagnosis of Tourettes Syndrome a few month ago, and hearing that my 12 year old would "grow out of it" from the medical community, I decided to investigate on my own. My son also has eczema, allergies (environmental and food) and asthma. Being on too much medicine already for a child (in my opinion), another prescription was out of the question. This book is a God-send! I see our situation throughout the book, and Sheila J. Rogers has written in a way that is easy to understand. She provides hope and practical information that I have already put into action (and I'm only half way through the book!). The book does not demean the medical community, but offers an alternative to us who refuse to believe that this is how our loved one has to be. The advice in this book is sound commonsense from reputable sources backed by experience from families of children with TS. I highly recommned this book as a vital key in helping your loved one. Whether your loved one is newly diagnosed, on medication, or you just suspect there is something "wrong"... you need this book!

I am an RN and am conditioned to favor very scientific researched evidence. Although I appreciated the books attempts to link things such as fluoride, aspartame, pesticides, mold, yeast overgrowth, and allergies to Tourette Syndrome, it seemed that most of all links were "hearsay" and letters from readers. It would say something like "many people report that eating sweet increases their tics."

Of course I believe that having a healthy body (exercising, eating well, sleeping enough) will make anyone's tics better, I couldn't buy into the stretched logic that drinking fluoride in water exacerbates tics.

After reading it I just felt completely frustrated like everything from the dust in the air to the sugar in my sons corn cereal was making his tics worse. I finally went online and watched this hour long Tourette seminar from the leading Yale expert Dr. John Walkup and I felt enormously better. You can get to it by going to the Tourette Syndrome association website and clicking on the newly diagnosed link. I was able to get the facts that I was craving.

I hope I haven't offended anyone, that wasn't my intention. This book simply wasn't what I was looking for.

This book is a must for anyone who has even the slightest suspicion children or friends may have tics, immune system dificulties, allergies and behaviour problems. If this book had been published 5 years ago it would have saved our family from a lot of frustration and heartache. Finally someone has put all the theories and backed up knowledge in one book. Thank-you for restoring our sanity. Our three children were diagnosed with Tourette's, and we thought it was the end of the world. This book helped us resolve the symptoms drug free.

People have to read this book before accepting the medical professions treatment of drugs for these issues. It will make life so much easier and help people understand the effects of modern day living on our children and coming generations.

Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain: The Practice of Informed Touch

Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain: The Practice of Informed TouchWhat a great book. Know first of all that it's written more for clinicians, such as massage therapists. If you have no medical background, you may get confused with some of the medical terms such as abduction.

Having said that, for practitioners who treat musculoskeletal pain, this book is the best trigger point therapy book I've come across. After spending a few chapters covering some of the basics on topics such as the nature of trigger points, Qi, informed touch, etc, the book gets right to the reason why you probably bought the bookthe trigger points.

The book does an excellent job of covering all the muscles of the body and their associated trigger points. But that's not where it ends. Besides having some of the best muscle pictures you could ask for, each section on a particular muscle ALSO covers pain patterns a specific trigger point could produce, as well as stretching and strengthening exercisesnice!! While the stretches are clearly depicted, the strengthening exercises are only describedbut they are certainly clear enough to follow.

A couple of appendices on meridian pathways, cutaneous zones, and acupoints are also included.

Lastly, the book ends with two indexes. The first is a pain pattern index, which is really a picture reference guide on trigger point referral patterns for the various muscles. The second is a symptoms index. Using this index is as easy as looking up a particular area of the body (such as the shoulder) where you'll then find various symptoms and their potential cause (trouble with reaching up....problem with latissimus dorsi).

All-in-all, it's a great resource for anyone who deals with clients that might have muscular pain and the book could also double as a patient education tool with its great pictures of all the muscles and their trigger points. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for practitioners who deal with a lot of shoulder patients.

This is by far the best manual I have ever used for my fibromyalgia/myofascial pain. It gives instructions for the physical therapist as well as helping the patient with identifying the location of the problem. Excellent diagrams help you to locate the areas to massage or use accupressure on for relief of pain. The book then gives stretching and strengthening moves for each specific area. For the last ten years I had an area of severe pain that neither I nor my therapist could figure out how to relieve. The first time through this manual, I was able to identify the exact spots to manipulate and I had immediate relief. It is worth 10 times what I paid for that one thing alone. I am VERY happy with this book!

This manual is concise and easy to use. I bought it to use as a ready-reference in my practice and am very happy with the presentation. It can be flicked through quickly to find the relevant muscle or group you are evaluating and the text is easy to follow giving the main points under headings. The drawings are excellent.

I particularly liked the sections at the end of each muscle which gives a stretching and strenghthening exercise for that particular muscle and a drawing. It will be very easy to demonstrate this to patients using the guide. Very simple and easy to follow.

The only downside to the book for me was the non-inclusion of the intrinsic muscles of the foot and their trigger points. I can't quite work out why these would not be included and as a podiatrist is quite an ommission. It does mention in the introduction that it doesn't include all muscles of the body, just the one's that they have found to be clinically significant and it then refers the reader to Travell and Simons.

Overall, a good clinical reference.

Trigger Point therapy is the miracle cure for many aches and pains!

Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain: The Practice of Informed Touch by Donna Finando is an easy to use book which incorporates illustrations of different stretching exercises that REALLY works out the trigger point knot. I use this book in conjunction with The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook: Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief, Second Edition by Clair Davies, which is a better source for diagnosing the trigger point (both cause and location).

I have found the book to be very helpful with trigger points, and where to investigate satellite trigger points. It explains referral zones and causative factors. It also gives you stretching and strengthening exercises specific to the area you are working.

Easy Hikes Close to Home: Phoenix

Easy Hikes Close to Home: PhoenixNote to readers: This is an excerpted review from a large print edition of the same book. I like the contents, but in large print edition, I commented more on the readability. This review is entirely about the content of this title.

Like many Menasha Ridge authors, Charles Liu has written an extensive hiking guide to the Phoenix region, and then excerpted some of the shorter hikes for a contribution to Menasha Ridge's "Easy Hikes Close to Home" series. Happily, this book does include some original material and anyone who enjoys southwest hiking will find some benefit from this title.

The book describes 20 different routes in the greater Phoenix area, all of which are within an hour's drive and none of which are longer than 6 miles. Still, readers who think they are getting all strolls in the park should be aware that no hike in the Phoenix area, especially in the summer, is truly easy. Be sure to carry plenty of water. Besides that, Liu has a passion for peaks, and this book includes several routes up the Phoenix mountains that are steep and moderately challenging. A few of these paths are not heavily frequented, but route descriptions are accurate, and this book includes a decent set of sketch maps.

As a (fairly regular) visitor to Phoenix, I prefer the short trail format. I get to see a lot of the region quickly in a morning or evening hike without having to acclimatize to the heat that dominates the area from April through October. I also appreciate the diversity of terrain in the book, including a waterfall! (Really.) So if you find yourself in Phoenix for a few days, this is a nice book to pick up. It will give you a variety of options for exploring a part of the city visitors rarely see. Even residents will benefit from this title, though Liu's longer book, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles, Phoenix, may be a better choice for those who live in the Valley of the Sun.

Practically Posh: The Smart Girls' Guide to a Glam Life

Practically Posh: The Smart Girls' Guide to a Glam LifeThis is a "Guide to Life" that you and all of your girlfriends would love! The author's writing style makes you feel like you are one of her BFFs. There are tips on asking for a raise, for decorating your home, how to "impress a dude", great drugstore beauty products and even recipes for entertaining. The book has plenty of visuals and is so well put together that you can pick it up and read 5-10 pages without even realizing. This is the pefect book for busy women on the go who want to uncover the secrets of living a posh life, practically a feat not easily accomplished, but with Moreno's help a possibility for all of us glam girls. This will be on my "give list" for Christmas this year!

I absolutely love this book! It has so much great information delivered in such witty and charming ways. Being in my mid 20's it seems to be just about the right age group to learn from the information before it's too late. I would highly recommend it to any woman graduating college and hoping to make a graceful transition into a more adult world.

I purchased this book three times, however, it was not out of excitement to share it with others. My first copy, after taking it home and reading straight through the first half of it, had several pages come loose from the binding and fall straight out. I took it back and exchanged it for another one, which after flipping through a few more pages, ran into the same problem. I took my second copy back to the store and ordered a third copy, hoping that this time I'd have more luck. Sure enough, once it came in and I started to flip through it and check the pages, a few fell out of my THIRD copy. Unfortunately I simply returned it and didn't bother buying a new copy.

I LOVE this book and wish I had a copy of it still at home, but unless they reprint it with a stronger binding I doubt it will grace my bookshelf anytime in the near future. Very disappointed in the structure.

Did anyone else have this problem?

I am a single woman in my late-thirties. I wish I had this book in my late twenties and early thirties. It contains tons of information that I had to learn by trial and error as well as other tips that I did not know about then but sound like a great idea now. The book is fun & entertaining but also practical and should be kept as a reference book. It's a nice starting point to building your "grown-up" life.

Practically Posh by Robin Moreno is almost like reading a magazine with lots of little articles about how to find less expensive solutions to the things you would like to fill your life with.

It deals with everything from smart shopping trips to the grocery store to how to find your own style. It also includes subjects as how to get a promotion, being a trendy hostess on a budget and meeting the parents for the first time. The chapters are all divided into small 1-3 pages subchapters, and Moreno shares personal stories and tips related to the different subchapters.

Practically Posh seems to be an attempt to find cost effective ways to keep up a trendy lifestyle, and it is mostly geared towards single women. I think the most appropriate readership would be college to recent college graduate females, while it might also appeal to single women paying high rents.

I enjoyed reading Practically Posh, and the book is an easy read with lots of wonderful photos. However, I did feel that the book was a bit superficial, in the fact that it did not really go in depth on any of the subjects. It was almost as if I had to rush through the process of being practically posh.

It is not a book for frugal moms, avid coupon clippers or penny pinchers, but I can definitely see how it would come in handy for women who are used to being, or wish to be, big spenders.

Some of the highlights of the book were:

Perfumes, Splashes & Colognes: Discovering and Crafting Your Personal Fragrances

Perfumes, Splashes & Colognes: Discovering and Crafting Your Personal FragrancesNancy Booth has taken what can sometimes seem a confusing hobby, creating your own fragrances, and broken it down into easy to understand language. Her brief description of the history of fragrances was interesting and informative. I also appreciated the list she provides categorizing many popular scents on the market today. The quick and simple quiz included allows you to pinpoint what types of fragrances you or your friends are most drawn to. Her descriptions of the various scent profiles also helped me pinpoint which fragrances would appeal to friends and relatives. In addition to all of this she provides numerous, easy to follow recipes for perfumes and colognes that can be created quite easily at home. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in creating their own fragrances.

Perfumes, Splashes & Colognes is an education in fragrance. This is a great book for the unschooled reader. The author takes you through many aspects of fragrances, their classifications, the crafting of fine perfume, and the history behind fragrances.

The recipes are informative with a description of the type of scent it will make along with the instructions. Resources for obtaining ingredients are included along with suggestions for storing, and gift giving. I have throughly enjoyed this book.

I rated this book a 3 because it wasn't really what I expected. While it was very helpful to have the various scent classifications, the history of perfume and the Q&A test for finding your personal scent categories, this simply took up too much of the book. I guess my problem is that I was looking specifically for a "recipe book," not a page-after-page listing of designer perfumes and what scent category they fall into. Not quite sure why the author devoted so much of the book to this when the book is supposed to be about crafting your own perfumes and scents. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of great information here and it is well presented, it just wasn't really what I had in mind when I bought the book. :)

Some Amazon reviewers seem to miss completely the point of the books they are rating. One example: among the reviews of a book on yoga for (very) fat people, some commentators criticize the author for changing some of the classical positions. If one can work out the correct positions, why is he(she) meddling into, and messing up, the references for less fortunate people?

This book is another case. It clearly states that it is for beginers (and, by the way, never claims to be solely about 'natural' perfumes). A couple of reviewers criticize it for containing a classification of popular commercial perfumes into the categories of scents that is used in the text.

Is it really that difficult to figure out why such a table is useful for someone that is seeing a perfumes classification scheme for the first time? For those that still don't get it: it's because you exemplify each category with a scent that the reader either very probably knows (since he's reading a book on perfumes, chances are he knows the most common commercial ones) or can easily go to a nearby drugstore and try it.

Not only that, but we can all presume that one of the pleasures of learning the basics of perfume-making is when, for the first time, you make a "perfect copy" of commercially successfull product.

This is the sort of explanation that naturaly comes to anyone that approaches a book with a clear, good-natured mind. People who are unable to put themselves into the targeted audience's shoes would do better avoiding the confusion they create with their self-centered opinions.

I was disappointed when I purchased this book about two years ago. I was expecting it to be more about natural perfumery. It does have some fully natural recipes, but many include synthetics. There's also a big focus on commercial perfumes and for me that was essentially useless. I was actually a bit surprised that Storey published this since most of their books have a more natural focus.

Your appreciation of this book will be greatly influenced by your feelings about synthetic fragrances. I don't think the author did a poor job, she simply wrote from her own perspective, one that I do not share. If you are into synthetic fragrances and commercial perfumes, you will probably be happy with this book if not, look further.

Mandy Aftel has come out with a book about natural perfumery called Scents & Sensibilities that I do not own yet, but may be worth checking out. I do own Mindy Green's book about perfumery, which is full of recipes. The only problem I have with it is that so many of the blends contain sandalwood, an oil that comes from a threatened species.

Herbs and Herb Lore of Colonial America

Herbs and Herb Lore of Colonial AmericaI was so excited when I got this book as I am highly interested in plants that were used during colonial times in America. I am especially interested in what the plant useage was (food, medicine, construction etc) and was hoping to discover some new information on both native and introduced plants during that time.

Oh how HIGHLY disappointed I was! The introduction was the only part of the entire book that was written in adult language. I discovered that this is an unedited reprint of a book written as a compilation of information by a group of women in the 1970s. I don't know who they are, but this book should be rewritten at minimum for the writing style.

The information presented is also unclear and often incorrect. In many places, the authors fail to distinguish between actual use and function of a plant and folk lore and mythology. The processing of plants to useful forms (poultices, tinctures etc) is misinterpreted by these authors, and the pictures associated with many of the plants are often useless unless one knows what the plant looks like in reality.

Over all, this books could be MUCH better than it in fact is.

This little book was a great find. It's a Dover reprint of a much earlier gem that might otherwise have been lost. It is pleasant to read and makes a great reference, as it is well researched and documented. Particularly useful if you are researching early plant uses, early gardening, and early folk medicine in the colonial U.S.

This is a very good reference book on herbs grown in Colonial times. Carefully researched by the Colonial Dames of America, it gives you some very interesting facts and plant lore about the herbs grown in those times and how they used them. It also contains a sketch of each plant. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it does not give you planting instructions or zones where each herb can be safely planted. If you are an herb lover you will enjoy this book.

This slim volume not only identifies herbs commonly found in colonial American gardens, it also tells why our ancestors grew them. Whether medical, mystical or culinary, everything in the garden had a purpose. I enjoyed that the authors provided historical lore for each plant as well as descriptions on how it was used or prepared. For instance, liquor distilled from lily of the valley "smeared on the forehead and back of the neck makes one to have good common sense."
