The author tells how she changed the game by taking personal responsibility for research, experimentation and continuous learning, using what she "knew" as a starting point, but then listening to her heart and her gut -rolling up her sleeves and improvising, and trying things when the situation didn't respond. She didn't turn away from medicine, but reached out to all kinds of medicine and its practitioners all the way through. And she learned something useful from everyone she met along the way. The approach described here is a model of learning, resilience, persistence and courage from which everyone can benefit.

The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and A

The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your LifeAs a registered dietitian, chef, and fellow author, I find few diet books worthy of recommending. But The Flexitarian Diet is one that I do highly recommend. It's based on sound science. It's written in a witty, easy-to-follow style in a way in which you know that Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, is passionate about what she is suggesting.

I love that everything is based on straightforward fives--five food groupings, five-week meal plan, and more. But it's not based on a gimmick like so many diet books. And it's not really a "diet" as it's not based on avoidance. It's a positive, no-guilt approach to eating, which is the most effective approach to healthy eating for a lifetime. In fact, this fresh flexitarian approach is how I eat and what I tell those who are not already vegetarians to strive for. That means if you really want a little bit of meat, it's okay on occasion.

Plus, there are many, many recipes (with short ingredient lists!) and shopping checklists included that make eating healthfully and following a meal plan simple--without sacrificing flavor.

You will enjoy this smart book while getting healthier at the same time!

Book Review: The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life (McGraw-Hill, 2008) by Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, LDN

A licensed and registered dietitian and a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Dawn Jackson Blatner is also the hostess of a "Healthy Eating' segment on Chicago's Fox News in the Morning. Once referring to herself as a "closet meat eater, she now openly calls herself a flexitarian. Dawn is mainly a vegetarian who eats a little red meat on occasion--a flexitarian.

Dawn Blatner writes that the word "flexitarian" was chosen by the American Dialect Society as the Most Useful Word of the Year (2003). Also, a 2003 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition sampled 13,000 people and found that 2 of 3 vegetarians eat this way.

Key Points to The Flexitarian Diet:

* Eating a plant-based vegetarian diet is the smartest thing we can do for our health.

* The author has taught flexitarian eating to thousands of clients and has seen them lose 20-80lbs.

* Phytochemicals in plants protect us from all types of disease.

* Vegetarians live 3.6 years longer on average than non-vegetarians. (They have less disease.) They also weigh approximately 15% less than non-vegetarians.

* The Flexitarian Diet is a gradual shifting to a healthier way of eating. It promises a 15-30lb weight loss within 6-12 months. Benefits also include improved: energy, self-esteem, arthritis, blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep, triglyceride and glucose levels. Also associated with this type of diet is a reduced risk of: cancer, diabetes, heart disease.

* Contains 100 recipes, but no photos of them. Divided into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, it includes "swaps" for how to add poultry, fish, or red meat to a meal. Nutritional information is listed and the recipes are calorie-controlled, meet the American Heart Association's certification for sodium and saturated fat levels, contain no artificial ingredients, trans fat, or sugar substitutes. Shopping lists and meal plans are supposed to benefit the reader's weight loss.

Examples to try:

* Burger with Broccoli Raab

* Black Bean and Zucchini Quesadillas (with cheddar cheese)

* Pad-Thai-Style Tempeh

* Pinto and Cheese Poblanos

The Flexitarian Diet includes a fitness chapter covering the various aspects of how to get moving and get into shape. Advice is given regarding types of exercise, gym memberships, how to maintain motivation, type of shoe to be worn, and how to beat exercise barriers. (Excuses for not exercising)

Dawn Blatner has 10 pages of references and blocks of facts throughout highlighting important points. The meat of the book discusses vegetarian issues related to food groups, beans, tofu products, flavoring, cost control, organic vs. conventional, etc..

The Flexitarian Diet certainly catches the eye with a beautifully photographed cover which illustrates the book's content well. The Flexitarian Diet is a healthy way for the beginning weight-loss conscious person to start. And it is also for those who wish to really make a change for long-lasting health, taking a new approach to how they shop, prepare, and enjoy their food.

As diet books change into wellness books, more emphasis is put into total body health. The reader should be able to ask such questions as, "How will bad cholesterol be reduced? Will I be able to walk farther? Am I sleeping better?" The Flexitarian Diet hits this mark.

This book could have been titled Healthier and Thinner in Five Easy Steps! The premise of this book is that you don't have to go to extremes to be healthy. As Dawn Jackson Blatner says on page 1, this diet isn't about rigid rules, it's about eating more plants and doing the best you can. She never judges you for what you eat, but makes suggestions about how to add healthy foods and habits to your busy life.

The Flexitarian Diet is filled with yummy recipes (most have no more than five ingredients!), shopping lists, and expert suggestions for curbing cravings and generally feeling good. The book focuses on five main areas of eating: meat alternatives (although meat is still "allowed"), fruits and veggies, grains, dairy, and sugar and spice. The author introduces one area per week, describing the nutritionist's favorite ways to incorporate new foods into your diet, or new ways to enjoy foods you already eat.

I tend to eat pretty healthily already, but I learned a lot from this book. I've tagged the pages with the recipes I've tried and loved, as well as at least a dozen I can't wait to try. But I think my favorite thing about it is that it supports the way I like to think about health and eating. I used to be a vegetarian, but I went back to eating meat a few years ago. I always felt a little guilty about it, as though I wasn't strong enough to resist the smell of a steak on the grill. Flexitarian eating is about trusting yourself and understanding that diet is flexible, and that flexibility is a strength, not a weakness. Thank you, Dawn Jackson Blatner!

That's the number of daily meal combinations that you can create Dawn Jackson Blatner's mix and match menus/recipes. Part 1 explains her purpose behind the five by five by five plan: five is the average number of ingredients people run into the grocery store to buy after work for that night's dinner. Five small meals a day to fuel your metabolism: 300 calorie breakfast, 400 calorie lunch, 500 calorie dinner, and 2 150calorie snacks which equals 1500 calories a day. Need only 1200 calories? No problem eliminate snacks. Need 1800 calories? No problem. Double up breakfast. That's the whole point of being FLEXIBLE. The calorie count design allows me to be lazy and have the occasional Amy's Mattar Paneer Tofu(vegan) with a broiled banana for dinner without feeling like I've blown anything. It even has a quiz where you can see where you are one the flexitarian scale.

Part 2: Introduces you to some vegetarian foods you may not be familiar with if you are a carnivore. She also talks to you about setting up your healthy pantry, getting in more fruits and veggies (even into the picky veggie-hating eaters in your family. Nuts, cheese, and barbeque or sweet and sour sauce anyone? There is a chart that tells you how long to cook different grains such as quinoa, teff, kasha etc. I love the fact that this info is all in handy chart form making it easy to use for those of us, like me, with short attention spans.

Part 3 has those mix-and-match meal plans that I love so much. She has 5 different week with 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 7 dinners, and 7 snacks complete with shopping lists should you want to follow the plan exactly. Note: the shopping lists assume you've stocked your pantry so, if you skipped that part, you might want to go back and reread it.

All the recipes are for one person which it ideal for those of us who are the only vegetarians in our family. But, you can easily double, triple, or quadruple the recipes to fit your family needs. I consider this a plus. I've bought quite a few vegetarian cookbooks that make 4, 6, even 8 portions. WAY too much for me.

This book is great for anyone who wants to be vegetarian some, most, or all of the time, and is just too TIRED to plan it all out.

Incidentally, I tried this for 3 weeks before posting a review. I found that I ate vegan 20 out of 21 of those days simply because those are the recipes I picked. I substituted soy and almond milk for regular milk, scrambled tofu for scrambled eggs, and soy yogurt and vegan cheese (note: some "vegetarian cheeses have casein so read labels). My point being that you CAN use this book if you or someone in your family is vegan. Oh. And, I lost 8 lbs. Not too shabby.

This book is for people who don't like to cook, newbies looking for information regarding a more vegetarian approach to eating, while weaning themselves from meat, and folks that aren't really worrying about cooking well balanced, healthy meals. The actual information in the book regarding healthy food choices, healthy fats and meat alternatives is informative to a beginner. What disappoints me is that I do cook strictly from fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I don't buy processed foods, ie;, comes out of a can, jar or box, with the exception of pasta. Based on reviews, I expected to find healthy recipes. Especially since the author promotes eating fruits and vegetables 3-4 servings each a day. What I found was a lot of recipes that included packaged, processed foods such as frozen waffles, whole grain bread (which if you know how to read a label is good), jarred salsa, etc. Most of the recipes were extremely simple, so if you don't know how to cook this could be a great book for you.

One recipe calls for 1 slice of tofu, olive oil, light canola mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, hot sauce, whole grain bread, canned or refrigerated sauerkraut and a slice of swiss cheese. Where's the fresh fruit and vege's here. Oh yeah, the catsup is a fruit and sodium loaded sauerkraut is the vege.

How does the author guarantee the calorie count or nutritional levels when anyone can purchase a variety of food products to create this recipe. According to the author this has 499 calories, 27 g of fat, (very high for 1 meal) 8 of which is saturated, 33 mg cholesterol, 865 mg of sodium, 45 g of carbs, 5g of fiber and 25 g of protein.

Note to seller: I bought this book used, for $9.38. The seller did not remove the $2. price sticker that they paid when they bought it at a garage sale. The book was in excellent condition because the previous owner never looked at it. I will be donating this book to a thrift shop.

Details Men's Style Manual: The Ultimate Guide for Making Your Clothes Work for You

Details Men's Style Manual: The Ultimate Guide for Making Your Clothes Work for YouThe main reason I purchased this item was for its numerous illustrations. Just about every page has a full color picture of clothes. From a glance I can tell just how long a blazer should be. Or perhaps how long a sweater's sleeves should fall when wearing it over top of a collared shirt.

I use this book as a reference manual on how clothes should fit. Need to buy a new tuxedo? Turn to the formal wear section and read up! It also gives you a few basic ideas on how to wear things. For instance, how to match a shirt and tie with jeans and a blazer. It won't tell you exactly how to wear things but just offer you guidelines with some great pictures.

For the $20 this book costs you get a free 1 year subscription to Details Magazine ($10 value) along w/ a ton of up to date information (Published October of 2007) so it's definitely worth it.

This book should become standard issue for every man after college, if not high school. While style and fashion is a very personal and very individual process, it pays to understand men's clothing.

Chapters are broken down by article of clothing, from shirts, pants, jeans and polos to coats, gloves, hats and leather, everything is covered. And it is all explained in a very direct, excuse me ladies, but man's kind of way, like reading a car manual almost. It is as good a read all the way through as it is a quick reference guide. In fact, it's as a reference guide that this book really shines. When dressing for any occasion, a quick flip through the book can help you choose the appropriate attire for any event, while feeling both confident in your look and comfortable in your attire.

All in all, men and the women who shop for men's clothing should check this out especially if you want to start filling your closet with a wardrobe that is ready for anything. Great job, Details.

Covers the basics very well, and gives quite a few ideas on how to change things up. Also includes a card for a free year (or year extention) to a Details subscription. Worth the money.

EDIT: Just went back through parts of the book again, and forgot to mention one key item. There are several points in the book where they suggest a new way/item to try, with 3 different levels of "difficulty", for example, wearing a sport coat with a tie, then a sport coat with jeans, etc. Something I hadn't seen mentioned before, even in their mag, and it's a great idea.

Like most other guys, I'm an imbecile when it comes to fashion. Luckily, I realized this recently and started trying to correct the problem. The Details Manual is a book I picked up, seeing that ratings-wise, it was the best selection. I'm really impressed with it. The book contains guides and models on what should be a mans closet; it touches on most subjects regarding a mans wardrobe options: Jeans, Shirts, Blazers, Suits, etc. The book gives you the basic parts of clothes, and how they should fit. I'll use the first chapter (shirts) as an example; first is shirt basics (parts of the shirt: cuffs, collars, etc.), it goes on to shirt options giving a few examples of decently nice shirts, after examples it tells you the characteristics of a perfect fit like how it should feel like when sitting down, from here it goes to collar types, dressing options, a kind of challenge for the chapter (challenges are on every chapter), and finally ends with the don'ts of shirts (EX. Don't unbutton your shirt too far, and it tells you why). I don't really agree with the person who said this book is for 20 to 30 year olds, I think this is a great, standard manual so to speak, for a man at any age, thats my opinion though.

I recently made a resolution to stop dressing like I'm in college and to start dressing my age, so I picked this book up on recommendation of a friend. The best thing about this book are the excellent photos showing different outfits. I passed up buying some of the "classic" style guides that didn't have good photos. Not all of their recommendations are "me", but it has been very helpful in establishing a good baseline for beginning to build a wardrobe.

Remarried with Children: Ten Secrets for Successfully Blending and Extending Your Family

Remarried with Children: Ten Secrets for Successfully Blending and Extending Your FamilyAs I read Remarried with Children--Ten Secrets for Successfully Blending and Extending Your Family by Barbara LeBey, all I kept thinking was: where was this book when I needed it.

Many years ago I married a man who had a nine-year-old son and an eleven-year-old daughter. Since I had never had children, I entered this marriage ill-equipped--I was virtually clueless--to deal with the children of the man I loved. LeBey's book could have saved me so much grief (the checklist alone on pages 113-115 would have been invaluable), prevented the myriad mistakes I made, and helped me work through the conflicts and problems that are inevitable when two people marry and one or both bring their children into the marriage. You aren't just marrying that man or woman, you are also an "instant family"--one that was there years before you came on the scene. Without the knowledge and tools to deal with this complex situation, the probability is that you will deal instead with ongoing tension and conflict, every conceivable form of resentment, disagreement and confrontation. And, in many instances, the stress of the stepchildren/stepparent relationship can erode the very foundation of the marriage itself. It did in my case.

Every chapter in Remarried with Children would have served to enlighten me, to calm my anxieties, and offer the kind of sage advice that I could have used on a day to day basis. The book is filled with reader-friendly stories that serve to illustrate--dramatize,really--every point LeBey makes. Her style is compassionate, often witty, entertaining, but above all, always delineating the problems with clarity and insight, and giving the reader the awareness, motivation and the means to make their newly blended family a shining success.

As I said, I definitely needed this book, and now after reading it, I know it would have been all that I needed.

I bought this book based on the positive reviews here on Amazon, and was extremely disappointed in it. The author gives way too much benefit of the doubt to the adults who are remarrying, assuming that they are rational, thoughtful people who can look out for other people's interests as well as their own. She also assumes that these people have eased into the relationship somewhat slowly, have had ample exposure to the kids involved, and do not live together before marriage. That's not the reality for a lot of people I know.

There also seems to be a fairly strong anti-child bias (example: "The Taming of a Step-Brat" page 19 why the hostile wording?), and the theme that as long as the adults are happy the kids will just have to suck it up and adjust permeates the book. On page 164, there is a section on what do IF your kids are going to be involved in your wedding to new spouse. How can you create a "new" family while not including the kids? (and what's with the hint: Let your photographer know in advance that you don't want a wedding album filled with pictures of only "cute kids". Seriously?) The chapter "Sensitive Issues and Bad Influences" is just weird and disturbing on page 210 there begins a section called "Lolita and Stepdad" where the author talks about "Jill" who decides that she's going to try to seduce her stepdad as a way to show her mom who's in control and then on the next page says that "most inappropriate sexual incidents take place between a stepfather and stepdaughter". While she does ultimately say that it's always the adult's fault for sexual abuse, it takes several paragraphs to get there, and in the meantime buys into the stereotype of the teenage girl who uses her body as a weapon.

While there are some good ideas in this book full disclosure about financial obligations, getting along for holidays/birthdays/etc this is a book that could be picked up by people who are totally self-involved narcissists and could easily find dozens of things that would justify treating their kids and other family members as interlopers into their super-special relationship (which will always trump the needs of everyone else). So you may end up with the love of your life, but your kids might not want anything to do with you.

This book shows how important it is to put the marriage first. The focus is on putting aside the time to create a good relationship and preventing another divorce and more trauma for the children. The author tries not to push every relationship into one mold and she offeres a variety of options for some problems. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it for those whose lives have fallen into any of these situations.

As a divorced single mom who eventually remarried, I found a lot to like in this book.

Sadly, I read it after the fact --but still found it helpful.

This is one of the better books for spelling out the issues you'll need to consider.

Read it alongside Ginger Kolbaba's excellent book "Surprised by Remarriage" which is

also here on Amazon.

Clear, concise, and insightful analysis of the issues you'll confront. If you are

already remarried --you'll find yourself in these pages.

Well-written and useful. Five stars for clear consistent writing.

My husband has been less interested --he prefers more of a "story-telling" approach, he tends to read a lot faster and skip over things. Both of us have found this book helpful in our remarried life.

Bobbi Brown Beauty

Bobbi Brown BeautyIf you're looking for some average everyday faces to feel like you fit in......don't look here.....

I had high hopes I'd learn alot from Bobbi.....unfortunately she really did not succeed at passing on her proficient make up application skills. I hadn't seen the book at all before ordering so I had no idea what to expect. I had hoped she was going to take the typical modern woman like myself (average 35 yr old)and step us through some make up application. Instead ...the book is filled with pictures of Magazine cover models ..mostly under 25 who've never known fine lines and the struggles of applying foundation on wrinkled skin. Not to mention that Bobbi has lots of photos of women bearing the kinds of make up application techniques.....she says she doesn't advocate..such as eyeliner on the inner rims..

Overall....I didn't come away feeling like I got my money's worth....I did however learn some perspective on Bobbi personally..and although I found that interesting...it won't help me look any better tomorrow... sorry Bobbi!

I bought this book based on the recommendation of my sister-in-law, who has worked at several department-store makeup counters. She said that Brown's book had a lot of really great information, especially for a novice makeup wearer like me. However, I found the book to be lacking in specific techniques for applying makeup.

Some sections were fairly thorough, but most (especially the section on doing eye makeup) remained at a really general level. The only main piece of advice I got from the book is to wear yellow-based foundation, concealer, and powder. A lot of the other information Brown gives is just too general; using some diagrams and showing color variations would have made it much more practical.

Last year, I purchased Sonia Kashuk's _Real Beauty_, and I definitely recommend that book over this one. Kashuk's book shows detailed photos of her makeup techniques so you can really see how a professional makeup artist applies makeup.

I wanted to like Brown's book, but found it not as helpful as I hoped it would have been!

I'm not a makeup maven, not by a long shot. Up until last week, I was a stay-at-home mom who knew very little past a little lipstick and the absolute basic brushes. I picked "Beauty" up because I was interested in sprucing up my look a bit for when I do leave the house, for church, various special occasions and errand running. Just because I spend a good portion of my time indoors doesn't mean I have to look like I just rolled out of bed when I go out. I'm still a stay-at-home mom, but my look more closely reveals how wonderful I feel on the inside. "Beauty" addresses the basics of make-up, from tools, to easy application, to how-and where-to shop for make-up. Bobbi also talks at length about loving the looks that God gave you. There are separate chapters on Black, Asian, and Latina beauty, as well as wedding day beauty (oh that I had this book on MY wedding day four-and-a-half months ago!) and make-up for photography and television. When they say ULTIMATE, they weren't kiddin'. This is a good reference for beginners and the experienced alike. My husband is a theatrical make-up artist, and even he found a little useful information. This is a comprehensive, not to mention concise, addition to any beauty library. I made a very smart buy!

Bobbi Brown Beauty is a basic book for learning to love and take care of yourself. The main focus is making yourself look presentable and "naturally beautiful" without using lots of makeup. It tells you what you'll need for glowing skin, and includes application instructions for day and night makeup, which all take under 20 minutes-practical and easy. Basically, the focus of this book is functional "no-nonsense" makeupthe basics on skin care, brushes, tons of tips and instruction on makeup (all natural), what to spend most of your money on, and general care of yourself (healthy diet, etc..).

I was looking for a fun book that I could play around with. Bobbi Brown Beauty lacks variety , and is basic and boring if what you're looking for is fun, glamorous, made up looks --which is why I only rated it three stars. Look to this book if you love the no-makeup look, are pressed for time, or have never worn makeup before and need a place to start. (This is a great starting place). ...

This book is organized beautifully and is full of all the makeup advice you will ever need. It is easy to understand and the photos are pleasing to look at. It has chapters on each type of makeup (foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick), as well as skin care, makeup tools, makeup organization and storage, etc. It tells you how to make a "flaw" a signature feature you can be proud of, how to do your makeup for an interview, and more. It contains practical advice about how to find your own makeup style, how to choose colors for your skin type, and how to be natural beauty by using secrets of the trade.

This book is not about becoming something you are not by painting and contouring your face, it's about working with what you have and making the most of the features you were blessed with. It is an education in basic beauty techniques that will help you look fabulous, no matter who you are.

I am 29 years old and I knew a lot about makeup and felt pretty good about how I looked before I read this book, but I learned a few simple things that have helped me look in the mirror and see how beautiful I can really be. (Her tip on yellow-toned powder is my favorite!) I highly recommend it for women of all ages and skin-types.
