Taste of Home: Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Quick & Easy Favorites: Slim Down with 427 Satisfying

Taste of Home: Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Quick & Easy Favorites: Slim Down with 427 Satisfying Recipes!I love this series but this cookbook has the exact same recipes as previous ones. I will not purchase any new ones until they start putting new recipes in it. Otherwise it's like buying the same book twice just different covers.

This is the third in the Comfort Food Diet cookbook series and Taste of Home definitely delivers once again. The first two cookbooks Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook and Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Family Classic s Collection: Lose Weight with 416 More Great Recipes! were winners in our home from the very first recipe tried. There hasn't been a recipe in any of the books that we have tried that has been anything less than great. Almost every single recipe has a color photo and all recipes have complete nutritional information. This isn't fancy five star restaurant fare that's going to send you to every grocery store in a 100 mile radius looking for ingredients. Instead, these are good old down home favorites made healthy, using real ingredients that we all are familiar with and that are easily found in almost any grocery store. These days, with so many recipes available online, it's rare that a cookbook earns its way into my collection, but these three books are at the head of the class. As an added bonus (as if you needed one), these books come with an attached card inside the book for a free year of Taste of Home Healthy Cooking magazine, which normally retails for $23.94 and delivers the same great recipes that Taste of Home is always known for but healthier.

I will say I've only tried 3 recipes from this book, but most of the recipes included sound awesome. I can be picky when it comes to food, but I am willing to try most of these at least once. So far I have made the chili con carne, beef stew, and Mexican manicotti. My husband and I have enjoyed each one. I can't wait to try more over the coming weeks and months. I really like the recipes for 2. I don't usually like making large meals because they either go to waste or I end up eating too much the night I make them.

I enjoy cooking, but am usually disappointed that the recipes in "diet" cookbooks are too bland or full of artificial sweeteners. (In fact, the addition of the word "diet" in the title of this cookbook almost prevented me from getting it.)

The first part of the book is a nice overview of the importance of proper nutrition for health and weight loss (or maintenance). There is also a 6-week menu plan.

The best part of the book are the recipes and full-color pictures. The ingredient lists are generally small (10-12 items tops) and are things you will probably have in your pantry or fridge. The nutrition facts are clear (calorie counts are included next to the recipe name, as well) and include the details you would need to calculate WW Points+ or diabetic exchanges.

So far, we have tried (and enjoyed):

Blueberry-stuffed French toast (pg 92)

Potato egg bake (pg 98)

Curried chicken rice soup (pg 107)

Little kick jalapeno burgers (pg 136)

Southwest vegetarian bake (pg 148)

Gruyere Mashed potatoes (pg 197) -and seriously yummy

Frozen fruit cups (pg 237)

Scrambled egg muffins (pg 268)

I recommend this cookbook, as it has tasty recipes with a healthy (or "diet", if you insist) twist. Nothing I made from the cookbook tasted fake or low-calorie. And I appreciate the attention to healthy eating, rather than a get-skinny-quick mentality. Overall, highly recommended.

This cookbook was fantastic! I'm always looking for ways to eat better yet still have the food be tasty, but those recipes are hard to find. However, Taste of Home hit the mark with this cookbook. I've already tried several recipes and have loved every single one of them. My kids already have the book marked up and flagged recipes for me to try. I was impressed.

Living Young: 32 Habits of Ageless People

Living Young: 32 Habits of Ageless PeopleThis inaugural publication from Andy Troy combines facts from years of research with extremely useful personal experience for leading a healthy, fulfilling life. Not only does Andy help with how you can stay and look younger, but there is a wealth of simple tips to get the most out of life, from meditating to optimzing your sex life. Some of these tips are so simple that we take them for granted, and this publication serves as a reminder for both professionals (psychologists/psychiatrists/trainers) and the lay person that we can lead a physically and mentally healthier, more productive lifestyle by choosing a positive attitude, including more humor and sleep, consuming less alcohol as well as providing an exercise and dietary plan. There are also some useful behavioral tips to help one worry less and get the most out of life. A nice read and also a good reference to keep on the shelf. Meng Law MD, MBBS, FRACR

Shakespeare's immortal line: "To Thine Own Self Be True", is exemplified by Andy Troy, in his recently published book: "Living Young 32 Habits of Ageless People".

Troy, a nationally-certified fitness and health expert, writes candidly and honestly about the reality that we mortals must all face: the accumulation of birthdays, and the challenges that the body, mind and spirit must face as we move through the stages of the life cycle. However, his is not a tome advocating acceptance and complacency in aging. He outlines, clearly delineates and supportively encourages the reader to take up arms (and legs, and stomach, and torsos, etc...) in the fight against the decline that many persons erroneously accept as the natural process of getting older.

This superior book, which is the best I've read in the last decade on health and well-being, does not deny that aging occurs. Instead, what it does brilliantly is provide the reader with transcendent insights, techniques and tools to make a difference. Troy eloquently provides the information that every man and woman needs to get much more out of life as they grow older, and to stop the decline of health and fitness if it has begun.

Troy's book takes a "holistic" path in addressing the human body, mind and spirit. And while he outlines his expertly developed exercises and workout routines to strengthen, restore and rejuvenate the body, he does not stop at the corporeal. Sections include avenues for optimal meditation, posture and breathing to rejuvenate consciousness. His eclectic approach includes sections on hydration, aromatherapy, vitamins, the delights when you "learn something new", the therapeutics of music, and even the panache provided by a "revised" wardrobe.

This informative book even contains recipes for a healthier life, including "Sue's Grilled Chicken & Broccoli in red sauce", a savory dish which I have already made a staple of my culinary repertoire.

Troy, who epitomizes the concept of "do as I do, AND as I say", is a wonderful guide through the myriad challenges faced by an individual who wants to feel better and happier. His narrative is supportive but uncompromising. He understands that if you are reading this book, you want to do something; you don't just want a pat on the back, you want a firm hand up, a plan that can help you live a better, healthier life.

I've read the book several times, and continue to glean new and inspired ways to improve my condition. This book has helped me recommit to exercise, a better diet, and a more rewarding approach to my daily challenges.

But all work and no play makes for a dull existence, and Andy encourages us to enjoy the delicacies and decadences around us. And while he points out the health benefits of one or two glasses of wine, he also gives a nod to the Socrates principal of "moderation".

Troy's book is a revelation, with so many fine recommendations and lessons, and even more insights and delights. "Living Young 32 Habits of Ageless People" is a cornucopia of useful information and practical and practicable exercises. And that is just one part of this great book. As the Bard had Hamlet say, "There are more things in heaven and earth Horatio than are dreamt of in your philosophy".

Andy Troy's book, of which I am a proud owner, is guaranteed to change your philosophy about health, exercise, well-being, and aging.

It has been a while since I have felt compelled to express my joy at a worthwhile, and actually helpful commodity. On the mostly rare occasions, when I find a product that I feel can improve the quality of life, I do feel bound to promote or inform about my find. Two years ago, I offered a review of a health DVD by this author, and so, recently, when I saw that Andy Troy published a book, well, it had to be explored.

Living Young: 32 Habits of Ageless People, turns out to be an informative and practical book of advice about maintaining health into old age. Mr. Troy, CSCS, has written an organized, concise, and user friendly guide to taking care of yourself, once and for all! He takes you through a daily regiment that sometimes requires a little time and planning, yet each step is manageable, with some thought. Although I believe that I do, and have, taken basic care of myself, this book empowers and enables me to clearly prioritize my activities for greatest impact. The book allows me to re-think my habits in a clear fashion so I can make decisions on how to improve and maximize my day to day routines which do impact my health. His suggestions are very worthwhile, and those not in my present repertoire will be slowly and thoughtfully included, down to his recipes and suggestions for dining!

This is a good and quick read with long term benefits for everyone. I strongly and highly recommend this book for all!

Finally---an anti-aging book that really gets down to what we need to know and follow. The 32 habit solution explains the "what" and "why" things are happening to us as we age. How we look and feel is not just about genetics, but more importantly how we care for ourselves day to day. The book provides a clear chapter by chapter road map on simple ways to a better life through a better life style. My thanks to Andy Troy (the author)for writing such a great book. I look forward to your next book!

Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program for Maximum Health and Longevity

Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program for Maximum Health and LongevityBy most reasonable standards Senior Fitness is an exceptional book on health and fitness. Its basic message is simple and intellectually sound. The recommendations are based on both solid science (multiple studies with convergent findings) and the results of the author's own heroic battle against cancer. On a personal level I found the book quite inspiring, providing just the impetus I needed to adjust my personal diet and exercise regimen. Dr. Heidrich doesn't equivocate or offer us simplistic solutions that require no work on our part, but the reward of good health and a vigorous old age should more than justify our efforts. The message is clear, the science is sound and if you're looking for a good book to jump start your own personal fitness program this is a great place to start.

This book--this author--has changed the lives of several people I know including my own. The information contained within far exceeded my expectations for this book. It should be read by everyone. I would have given it 10 stars if I could have.

You should know that you will not get this information from your doctor. Most doctors know very little about the impact of nutrition and exercise on the most common diseases since it has not been until recent times that nutrition and fitness has been taught in medical schools. I especially recommend it especially to people of any age who are trying to prevent or overcome cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, alzheimers, obesity.

I promise you will be inspired by this book!

This is an incredible book. I purchased it in June of 2006 and as of July 2006 I have already lost weight without any pain and frustration. It is easy to follow the advice and the facts are backed up by the research that was done. I am happy to say I have lost almost 12 lbs and the pounds are continuing to come off.

This is an easy read book and it is working for me. I have even given my 20+ year old son a copy. You are never to young to start taking care of you body.

Dr. Ruth's personal battle resulted in extensive research done by her for the benefit of all of us (male or female). She wanted answers to why she was ill and discovered that her illness (and its causes) were not all that unique. The rarity is in applying the information to one's lifestyle. Don't sit back and wait for yourself to become ill, use preventative measures to promote good health long into your "prime years" so that you won't have to be at the mercy of drugs, doctors and nursing homes like many of our parents.

This book was very inspiring, and motivated me to start a daily exercise program of walking and running.

I was searching for a book for a friend and ran across other books on running for seniors. Those reviews weren't very good, then I remembered this book that I read a couple of years ago. I realized that it was still timely, informative and the best info I've read on how to run safely until you're 100. I've followed the information in this book and it has allowed me to resume my running passion, place in races for my age group and just be content with finishing.

For those who say it may be a little difficult to follow the eating suggestions, it is much more difficult to watch friends and family succumb to the diseases of affluence...routinely having their chest cracked open for heart disease, going blind from diabetes, and enduring chemo. Ruth's program really works, you feel so much better, and interestingly, is similar to how the Olympic Kenyans eat. Well-researched, she quotes the works of Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Neal Barnard. Devil's Tango: How I Learned the Fukushima Step by Step

Devil's Tango: How I Learned the Fukushima Step by StepIn Devil's Tango: How I Learned the Fukushima Step by Step Cecile Pineda has delivered a poetic, profound meditation on the slowly unfolding death of the natural world by man-made radiation. She's not the only one who sees it, but she's in a very small group of people currently alive on the planet who are able to face annihilation without blinking.

Pineda uses Fukushima as a jumping off point to make a convincing case that production of nuclear fuel for whatever purpose is effectively conducting war on the living inhabitants of the world. She acknowledges that a culture built on attending to the shiny surface of things is designed to overlook: The hundreds of thousands of nameless Russians who died burying Chernobyl. The fact that your government makes weapons out of depleted uranium, weapons that have been used in Iraq and Afghanistan and many other places, creating soil and dust that produces human fetuses so deformed they are not recognizably human. The fact the U.S. is full of G.E.-built Mark I Boiling Water Reactors, many sitting on top of seismic faults, others sitting right on the shoreline of the Pacific or Atlantic region of Earth's one ocean.

I realized I can no longer count all the people you've known who survived, or did not survive, cancer. Cause and effect break down when cause is an invisible, tasteless, odorless substance that takes longer to break down than does the human body.

Official pronouncements coached by top dollar public relations firms can steer public perception, but they cannot change facts on the ground. Pineda writes:

...it's conceivable that in the larger scheme, Mother Earth may be the "decider" notwithstanding her failure to be recognized by the government -or any other government for that matter -with the exception of the government of Bolivia.

If she has any hope left, it's riding on the rise of the global 99%. She quotes Takanobu Kobayashi, an activist who leads Japanese citizens in the relentless pursuit of life over death: "We do not trust the government anymore."

Devil's Tango: How I Learned the Fukushima Step by Step DEVIL'S TANGO by Cecile Pineda is a well researched, fearsome, enlightening and shocking book. Ms. Pineda connects the dots of the past while counting down the days since the horrifying Fukushima disaster that she refers to as our planetary catastrophe of March 11, 2011. It is with great skill that Ms. Pineda presents what we need to know in order to face the tragic truth of our nuclear polluted world. This book will be a great resource for the reader who decides to act on what is learned from it.

An absolutely fantastic book, which provides tons of information, not only of Fukushima, which is the "guide-line", but also about all the unbelievable things the nuclear industry is doing in this country and elsewhere. One would think that the responsible people in the industry have a different planet to go to once they are done with that one it's mind boggling!

The way she writes: it's not a documentary which lists all the facts in an accurate but rather boring way. She is a poet and poetic is her writing without compromising the accurate facts, and she lets you never forget the horrific danger we live in, invisible, drowned in silence, but deadly.

Beyond Kegels Third Edition

Beyond Kegels Third EditionThis book explained that "I'm not alone" in my problem of leaking urine or stool. With places to "check off" in the book, I could more easily talk to my physician about my problems. And the illustrations explained so much that I didn't understand about my body. Most importantly, the exercises are working! And they are easy to do. A simple read, with good, solid information and advice, written in an understandable way. Hooray! The author, a physical therapist, is someone who is not afraid to write about a topic often thought of as "taboo" in our culture! Good for her! Now I don't have to worry when I laugh! Now, good for me!

Desperate for a way to control/reverse my prolaspe I found this book. It has a bit more anatomy information than I cared about but the exercises are good. I actually also came across a DVD which has the similar exercises for improving your pelvic floor.

I also want to mention that it seems more focused on urinary issues vs. prolapse.

While this book has good information on how the urinary tract and bowel system work, the solutions are based on purchasing all of their equipment. I received the book and could do nothing because I didn't have any of their proprietary exercise equipment. It would have been FAR more helpful if you could use every day items found in your home. It's a waste if you don't have their special ball, band, wedge, etc! Very disappointing. If you want information, it's great. If you want solutions, you better have all of their products.

A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's End

A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's EndIn A Palliative Ethic of Care: Clinical Wisdom at Life's End, Joseph J. Fins, MD, has written a timely and sage book whose readership is likely to include the clinician, the legal practioner, as well as the lay person. Dr. Fins addresses the history of palliative care in careful, measured tones, and he writes well. The book's greatest asset may be its respect for its subject, the dying, and Dr. Fins gives all concerned parties equal voice in his sensitive, yet instructive text on life's final moments. This book should be on the required reading list for everyone who has to address a loved one's (as well as their own) death.

I'll admit it, I've become an oddity: a clinically informed lay person regarding end-of-life matters. I breezed through APEOC, nodding knowingly at most of the scientific disease-state terminology. The point is, you can too. For the specific symptom is not as important as the thought process Fins shares with readers. That this book is written for med students means it's also for lay people, because it's at heart a process guide.

The only way citizens can manage hospitalization and/or end-of-life matters is through information. Prognosis is but one type of information. Also crucial is understanding how the institutions we're bedded in function. According to what precepts and roadmaps. APEOC is a roadmap into provider thoughts when treating the obviously dying.

Being a writer and reader on these topics, my antennae are up, and I picked up a problem statement toward the end. Paraphrasing, in regards to unaccompanied patients with written directives and a study citing that those directives were (more) often ignored, Fins failed to say the next logical (and required) thing: "so, med students, don't you ignore ADs in these instances." I cite this oversight because it's important to realize that even docs who orient themselves toward more humane clinical practices miss pitches. This, of course, is why there's something called "patient advocacy".

The 36-Hour Day, fifth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzhei

The 36-Hour Day, fifth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementias, and Memory LossWhen my father developed dementia some years ago, I didn't know what to do at first. This book proved to be a big help for my family and me, and now I'd like to be of some small help to you.

Dementia doesn't strike out of the blue. It builds up over a period of years, and in the beginning there is an understandable tendency to consider a loved one's unusual behavior to be just another sign of aging. However, when Alzheimer's or other dementias are at play, sooner or later you may well find yourself in need of some help when trying to deal with your loved one's needs. Indeed, until you understand more about Alzheimer's you may not fully appreciate the struggles your loved one is dealing with. It is a very scary thing to gradually lose some of your important mental capabilities, and there is a resulting tendency among those with dementia to either act out or to withdraw from normal family communications.

Here's your chance. If you even suspect Alzheimer's or another dementia (they are not necessarily the same), I strongly recommend that you get this book and read it. It will help you to better:

1. understand what your loved one is going through.

2. deal with the behavioral issues associated with Alzheimer's.

3. find medical help.

4. find additional Alzheimer's and dementia information from a number of helpful organizations.

5. discover support groups.

6. save a lot of time (when you are a caregiver for someone with dementia, time is usually in very short supply--hence, the title of the book).

7. evaluate financial possibilities.

8. understand that you are most definitely not alone in your dealing with dementia's effects.

This book is written by experienced authorities in the field, and it is easy enough to read for those without medical backgrounds. It is the likely all-time best-seller in its field for a reason.

I wish I had bought this book as soon as my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My father has received very little information from my mother's doctors on what to expect as her disease progresses and more importantly, how to deal with these issues. When I received the book, I looked up her latest problem in the index, dizziness, and turned right to an informative section that helped clarify what's going on with my mom. The bathing sections are helpful for understanding and thus coping with those issues. I appreciate the depth of topics and detail for symptoms that Alzheimer's patients can have; I am also grateful for the huge emphasis on respite care for the caregiver. This gives my siblings and me another avenue of discussion in getting help for my dad, who like many spouses has his own health issues.

My only problem with the current hardback edition is the text size it's a small font and closely spaced. I would hope that future revisions would enlarge the print a bit, especially since this book is generally going to be read by adults who appreciate a little larger print.

Overall I highly recommend it I've been flipping between this book and the Mayo Clinic book on Alzheimer's, and while they both have excellent information, I feel that this book is the better one for detailed information on the myriad little things that crop up with care of a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

I really have to strongly recommend this book it came highly recommened to me and this new edition is exactly what my family was looking for. Our Mom was diagnosed with alzheimer's and we have searched everywhere for information, and I own several books to help me understand this challenging disease. This is the go-to guide for caregiving, it is clear and gives a realistic perspective on what we can expect. Between the support groups at our memory clinic, and another book that also was just released on alzheimers treatment and prevention by Dr. Isaacson, I feel that I am now well-equipped with information and feel better about what lies ahead of us. Kudos to Dr. Mace and Dr. Rabens.

My dad had Alzheimer's Disease, and was getting much. He was in a different state, and my mom had taken care of him until she could not any longer. The stories I heard about my dad, and they were off the chart, I decided to get some information about this disease. Most people say this is about the best book out there to read on Alzheimer Disease. I had to leave sooner than expected, because he had a turn for the worse,so I looked through the book as much as possible to be a little prepared when I did see him. I did not make it in time...my father died the morning I was leaving. I had just received the book in time to read, but had to leave earlier than I thought, so really couldn't read it as close as I wanted to. I took care of him for a year in my home before he got very bad. I do think anyone with family or friends with this disease should be sure and read this book. It has a lot of things that you can really do wrong around a person with the disease, and things you can do that really help you understand "why" they are doing the things that they do. My father did things that if he knew he did....it would have made him sick. My father was one of the kindest persons I have every known. But, with this disease....behavior will change. Take time and order this book to help understand what they are going through, and what you yourself can do to take of of "You"! Great book.

Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival

Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical SurvivalThis book covers all aspects of preparedness, from food storage to weapons caching. Extensive source material is provided, including web addresses, stores and books for further study. Spigarelli does not preach or lecture. Unlike many other books on the subject, there is no overt religious point of view or political agenda. Spigarelli merely suggests that it is sensible to prepare for whatever eventualities the reader expects and provides the tools to do so. This is a book to read thoroughly and keep as a reference. The details on food storage alone are well worth the price.

Now in an updated second edition, Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide To Home Storage And Physical Survival by Jack A. Spigarelli is a solid, practical, no-nonsense, but completely "user friendly" reference for the selection and acquisition of stockpiled food and water for emergencies; growing, raising, and finding food; preserving food at home by means such as home canning and dehydrating; emergency evacuation in a crisis; and other preparation safeguards for weathering a natural or man-made crisis. From clothing issues to transportation needs and communication alternatives, the Crisis Preparedness Handbook is a solid, fact-filled, potentially live saving guide, and especially recommended reading for anyone seeking to protect themselves and their loved ones in times of local, regional, national, or international calamity.

Buy Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival Now

This is quite an extraordinary book. I read a lot, mostly non-fiction, and I give this author credit for doing an absolutely tremendous job of research, of book construction, and of presentation.

THe bulk of the book is about food and water--stockpiling, production, and preservation are the three largest chapters--but the rest of it is completely useful as well.

The resources section is lengthy, explicit, diverse, and totally helpful.

I put the book down with a comment to my wife that survival is very hard work, and preparing for survival is almost as hard. This book does everything possible to help you get started. It is chock full of gems, for example, plan on 26 rolls of toilet paper per person per year. I had no idea!

I also admire the author for being blunt about not favoring "retreat homes." His common sense view is that you have two choices: move now, or prepare your existing home for survival. His thinking, that it may be impossible to GET to your retreat home (or, I would add, once you get there, take it back from the armed strangers that have broken in and will kill you on sight) makes perfect sense.

This is not the only book you want. I admire the two spotlighted reviews very much, and have kept my own review short because of the excellence of the other reviews. Let there be no doubt: this book is worth every penny, and every minute of your time.

I recommend a four-part approach to preparedness: a below-ground safe room and iodine pills, train the kids to go deep and sit for three days in case of a nuclear event; a 3-4 week supply of water, food, and essentials that assumes NO ELECTRICITY; a one-year rudimentary supply kit; and a neighbohood association to study and prepare for survival as a group.

Having just started 'stockpiling' and emergency preparedness, this book has been our bible. It is comprehensive, informative, and easy to follow, even (especially??) for newbies like us. The advice is practical and never preachy. It can be read cover-to-cover or as a guide by just going to specific chapters that you need info on. It is not, like so many other resources on the subject, doomsday oriented; and it works well for disasters and the like or just helping one to prepare for the leaner times that sometimes arise in life.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject matter as well as for people you'd like to 'gently' introduce to it. I'm buying several copies for friends and family.

Definitely 2 thumbs up!

Want Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival Discount?

This book will not help you survive an emergency that you have not prepared for, but it will help you prepare so that you avoid emergencies in the first place.

Just as the title says, this is a preparation handbook. It will help you prepare the place you live so that you can make it through tough times in relative safety and comfort.

No, it will not help you learn to forage for nutritious weeds, track NWO soldiers to their base in the forest, or how to most efficiently loot the bodies of the dead. On the other hand, it will help you decide what food to store and how much, how to keep your electricity running, how to keep a working water supply, and includes a very brief section on guns.

I've read a lot of self-sufficiency books and this is one of the most well rounded that I have encountered.
