The Caregiver's Essential Handbook : More than 1,200 Tips to Help You Care for and Comfort the Senio

The Caregiver's Essential Handbook : More than 1,200 Tips to Help You Care for and Comfort the Seniors in Your LifeThis book is a compact, well written guide to helping those who care for seniors and seniors who care for themselves. It is short, simple, and well written. It is packed full of good advice and essential resources for seniors and those who help care for them

The book is divided into logical sections that deal with caregiver and senior issues. These issues are presented in simple bite sized pieces. They are easy to understand and easy to use. Most of the information is good advice for not only caregivers but all of us.

Not only are the authors obviously experienced caregivers but they have inserted thoughtful anecdotes from people who are caregivers throughout the book. The authors are also quite obviously caring and concerned. One of their most salient points that they make over and over is that we will all be seniors at one point or another and we should look at the things we do from the point of view of the people who we are helping.

This book is a must read for all of us. As the world population grows older, the advice in this book will become more and more topical for everyone.

An excellent resource directory is presented at the back, packed with essential resources for seniors. These are great resources and highly useful to both seniors and caregivers.

This is a terrific book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a caregiver or a senior.

This is an extrememly insightful and eminently readable guide for the many of us who are struggling to care for our aging loved ones. As as clinical psychologist working with families and specializing in child therapy, I have been uncertain how to advise parents when they describe the challenges they face with raising their children while also caring for their own parents and aging relatives. Now, with The Caregiver's Essential Handbook, I have an excellent source of practical information and advice to offer overwhelmed families. The 1,200 tips are clearly organized and easy to locate. There are invaluable phone numbers and web sites listed in the Appendix. All in all, one can just pick up this book for a few moments and gain a lot of invaluable information.

I am extrememly grateful that my colleague Sasha Carr and Sandra Choron have provided this wonderful resource. It will make a great difference in many families' lives.

A tremendous lifesaver for caregivers...

As a clinical psychologist specializing in geriatrics, I am frequently asked to recommend resources for desparate and overwhelmed caregivers who don't know how to handle the tremendous burden of aging loved ones, particularly those who are dementing. Anyone who works in gerontology or is a caregiver herself, knows that caregivers have precious little time or energy for research and reading. They want PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS and ADVICE delivered in a way they can understand. Until this book, there hasn't been anything I could strongly recommend that is 1) accessible; 2) practical; 3)professional; 4) concise; and 5) pleasurable to read.

I am thrilled that my colleague Sasha Carr, a specialist in health and aging, and Sandra Choron have finally given caregivers around the world such an expert, yet practical, compilation of information and advice such as:

1) 20 specific "Good Outings"

2) If your senior always wants to wear the same outfit, buy duplicates

3) Buy "Thick It" to add to thin liquids if your senior finds swallowing thicker liquids easier (very common)

4) If your senior balks at having her hair washed because it's disturbing for her to get water in her eyes, put petroleum jelly around her hairline before washing her hair

All 1,200 tips are divided into common-sense categories, making it easy to locate the information you need. Needless to say, the book is also chock-full of relevant phone numbers and web sites in an Appendix, and also includes a helpful index.

The Caregiver's Essential Handbook is just that, and has become the "go-to" guide that I now recommend to patients and caregivers.

Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight! : 150+ Restaurant Favorites to Make at Home--All 8 POINTS or Less

Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight! : 150+ Restaurant Favorites to Make at Home--All 8 POINTS or LessThis may be the best book published under the Weight Watchers' umbrella. It is a wonderful collection of favorite recipes from eight culinary genres. Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Italian, Greek, Japanese and Deli cuisine is featured. I love food (that's my problem) and delights such as General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Saltimbocca, Spanakopita, Shrimp Pad Thai and Moo Goo Gai Pan are now healthy, tasty and guiltless. You will not believe that these recipes are all 8 points or less. What is even more remarkable is that the family or guests will not suspect that these recipes came from Weight Watchers. This is a great leap forward for Weight Watchers as it makes the most popular restaurant meals not only available in your home, but healthy and delicious.

The book, unlike some earlier Weight Watchers' cookbooks, is very well laid out. The chapters are color coded and the index is arranged by cooking cuisine, with the recipes listed alphabetically. There are many beautiful illustrations as well. Many of the recipes come with a box called Clever Cook's Tips that give the user some useful suggestions, techniques and recipe substitutions.

You don't have to be a Weight Watchers' client to appreciate this book. The recipes are just good, dieting or not! Buy this one...you won't be disappointed.

I was just starting WW and it was going well, but I was bored. I had found a bunch of safe foods with just the right point values, but BOY was I craving take-out food and all those yummy things you can only get when cheating on a diet! I wanted Thai food most, which is notoriously filled with coconut cream and salt. Argh!

When I found this book at Amazon, I immediately ordered it... and thank goodness I did! Not only does it have Thai, but Italian, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, Greek -and more. There are foods in here that I never thought I'd be able to have while on Weight Watchers! The recipes are straightforward and actually authentic -I was worried that they would be too far from the originals but have been pleasantly surprised. The Thai "fresh" spring rolls (also known as Vietnamese Goi Cuon) are SPOT ON! I've even served them to guests, who couldn't stop complimenting them.

One of the best things about this book is that not only do they provide the nutritional information about each serving, but they actually say the size of each serving. This seems like such a small thing but in another WW book I ordered, the recipe only tells you how many servings for the whole recipe. Maybe I'm just not good at dividing, maybe I'm lazy... but just knowing that I can have a 1-cup serving of something *before* I start making something is helpful.

I'm usually one of those "make it up as you go" people with cooking (this could be why I'm on WW!) but I find myself actually using this cookbook quite often! Hope this helps!

This is a great cookbook! I just bought it a few weeks ago and already I have made six recipes from it. This cookbook would appeal not only to those looking to lose weight but also aspiring cooks who are hooked on take-out. I would say that although these recipes are not exactly authentic versions of the take-out favorites, they are even better! I especially love the "clever cook's tips" that are featured on most of the recipes that tell you what substitutes to make in order to make the dish vegetarian or how to change a dish to make it better. The Spicy Orange Chicken so far is my favorite. Bon appetit!

This is a super cookbook! My boyfriend and I love spicy food: Thai, Mexican, Chinese, Indian. But we also want to eat healthy and lose weight. (I'm doing Weight Watchers Online.) This book satisfies our need for "take-out"-flavored food but with lower calories and saturated fat. We just had the Shrimp Pad Thai for dinner tonight, and it's terrific! So many lowfat recipes taste bland, but the pad Thai had a great kick from the chili sauce. All the recipes make at least 4 servings, so we have plenty of leftovers for healthy lunches! So we save money on dining out too! This is a great value. Finally, there are many recipes for appetizers that make a whole lot of servings, so I can make tasty hors d'oeuvres that I can eat without guilt! This book is great for anyone who wants to enjoy great-tasting lowfat food. Enjoy!

I've tried more than half of the recipes in this cookbook and enjoyed every one of them. Taste and variety are as important to me as calories and 'points' and this cookbook doesn't disappoint. For those of you with a spouse who isn't 'diet' conscious, you know how difficult it is to serve meals that please both palates. I can assure you that this cookbook will do the trick...for the first time in many dieting attempts, I feel satisfied by my meals and my husband doesn't feel like he's also on a diet!

The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary Acts

The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary ActsSo good for anyone who wants to get over whatever is keeping them from moving their body if you're fat, if you're scared of locker rooms, if you have a mobility impairment, if you think you're too old, if you're afraid of looking ridiculous, whatever. Blank has you covered.

I really, really wanted to be able to rate this book five stars. In the end, I couldn't quite do that.

The book is very well written; it's lively, witty, and fun to read. It's also well-structured and very accessible. Blank's bluntness about the plight of plus size people (and anyone else who doesn't fit the mold of young, slim, and athletic) and how it can affect their body practice psychologically is refreshing, to say the least. She put many of my emotions that I previously couldn't find expression for into words, clear cut and simple. I found this aspect of the book to be inspiring and encouraging...simply knowing that you're not alone in your fear and doubts is so important to getting through any complicated emotions. I particularly like her statement that you do NOT exist to decorate the world for others, which is something that holds many of us (women in particular) back from living freely, fully, and in the moment. I also liked the inclusion of a resource guide, although I didn't find it quite as helpful as I had hoped.

With all that said, I was really hoping for more practical guidance. She does include some, but it seemed to me the bulk of the book centered around encouraging you to get out there and just do it, rather than telling you HOW to do it. Most of the practical advice she does give centers around the gym. Since I don't use gyms (partially for emotional/psychological reasons addressed in the book, but also in large part because of an array of more practical concerns), I didn't get much out of it on that end of things. I was really hoping for more outside-of-the-box suggestions and practical guidance.

In the end, this book is a great motivational tool for those just getting started, and/or those who simply need to see how very not alone they are. But I did not get out of it what I had hoped to, that being a practical guide to expanding an already existing body practice. If you're looking for more of a mental/emotional guide, this book may be for you!

I've been telling folks that the theses of this book are "there is no wrong way to have a body" and "I can move however the heck, wherever the heck, whenever the heck, and whyever the heck I want to, and haters can get out of the way" (I might not have used "heck" when talking to folks.

This book gave me a whole new language and perspective to think and act on incorporating movement and fitness into my life. It reminded me that I can and should have a "body practice" just because it makes me feel awesome, and that changing my size doesn't have to have anything to do with it!

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal Herbs

Planting the Future: Saving Our Medicinal HerbsPlanting the Future provides both motivation and instruction for saving medicinal plants. The public's growing realization of the healing potential of plants is positive, but over-harvesting has led to a decline in native stands of many plants. Rosemary Gladstar has gathered a stellar team of writers to address the issue. The index reads like a who's-who of the herbal world. More than 30 plants are addressed in individual articles written by herbalists who know and love them. A grower of any size can use the information, the backyard up to a large sanctuary. A gardener can find the plants best suited their area, as well as how to propagate and care for them. Once grown, there is information about the preparation and use of the plants. My own tiny urban medicinal garden is part of the effort to save valuable plants thanks to guidance from these leaders. Herbalists, native plant enthusiasts and conservationists will all find value in this book.

Planting The Future provides a different focus on the botanical market, featuring works by the herbalists of United plant Savers and discussing strategies to save and preserve medicinal herbs. Chapters provide an A-Z listing of herbs and their history, uses and propagation.

This book is a compilation of chapters by many different authors with plant conservation as the main theme. Each author gives excellent information, with many great suggestions and resources for further study. It thoroughly examines the subject of excessive wild-harvesting to the point of endangerment of many species that were once quite common. This book gives thoughtful and interesting advice on how to be good stewards of the Earth and to help these plants prosper.

7 Weeks to 100 Push-Ups: Strengthen and Sculpt Your Arms, Abs, Chest, Back and Glutes by Training to

7 Weeks to 100 Push-Ups: Strengthen and Sculpt Your Arms, Abs, Chest, Back and Glutes by Training to do 100 Consecutive Push-UpsI recommend this book to ANYONE who wants to get in the best shape of their lives. The book is so fundamentally sound that it puts any other bodyweight workout book to shame. The plan is brilliant: Take a "test" to see how many pushups you can do with proper form and then use that number to find the PERFECT workout to get you to 100! The workouts are very well balanced and don't feel like a chore to do.

I read the book and took the challenge seriously and was able to crank out 100 consecutive pushups just when the book said I should! On my 48th day of the program I was able to do 101 pushups and was so pleased to nail my goal.

I still follow the program even AFTER completing the "magic number" because pushups are such a great exercise for your core, arms & chest! There are so many variations that you can learn to keep your workouts interesting & fun.

Challenge yourself & get this book!

Intro

The book's full title is 7 Weeks to 100 Push-Ups: Strengthen and Sculpt Your Arms, Abs, Chest, Back and Glutes by Training to do 100 Consecutive Push-Ups. That's quite a mouthful. It's also a very ambitious claim. Does the workout plan live up to the hype? Let's find out! Given the unevenness of reviews for this book, I decided to volunteer myself as a fitness test monkey and take the 7-week challenge. What follows is my review after having gone through the complete 7-week program and following it exactly as outlined.

Program

It doesn't get any simpler than this. Nothing but push-ups, lots and lots of push-ups, split out over 5 to 7 sets each day, 3 days a week for 7 weeks.

The number of push-ups varies for each set, following a pattern of low-medium-low-high in terms of repetitions. There are 3 workout levels, and the level you start at is determined by a "fitness test" you perform before starting the program. The fitness test consists of doing as many push-ups as you can with good form in a single sitting. Somewhat true to the book's title (see the Cons section below), the beginner level program will get you to 100 push-ups by week 7. The intermediate program that I followed will get you to 100 by week 5, and by the end of week 7 my last workout actually consisted of 200 push-ups. There is even a preliminary strength-building program geared towards someone who is unable to perform push-ups with good form. The advanced and preliminary programs are not reviewed.

Equipment

Given the minimalist nature of this workout, you really only need enough floor space to comfortably do the push-ups. However, I recommend using either a yoga mat or a towel as a base for your push-ups. This will help keep your floor from getting sweaty and nasty as you crank through all those push-ups. And believe me, you *will* get sweaty!

Time

The time needed to do the actual workout is minimal. On average, each push-up workout alone took about 25 minutes to complete, although towards the end it took me 45 minutes to get through all 200 push-ups for week 7 of the intermediate level workout. Why so long? Well, as the weeks went on and the reps increased, I found that I needed longer and longer rest periods between sets. Factor in another 15-20 minutes or so for stretching, warm up, and cool down and you're really looking at 1 hour per workout, for a total of about 3 hours per week. Note that your total time will vary based on age and fitness level. I'm in my late 30s and out of shape, so if you're younger or more in shape you should be able to crank out your push-ups in less time. Conversely, if you're older or in worse shape than me (and yes, pear is a shape!) then you should budget for at least as much time or more.

Pros

The main strength of this program is the simplicity of it. By narrowing the scope to one exercise, the author has crafted a workout that almost anyone can do regardless of initial fitness level. It doesn't require any fancy equipment, which means you can do the workout anywhere. Best of all, it can be done in about 3 hours a week or less. Nice!

The author does a great job of explaining what a push-up is, what muscles are used, and what good form should be like. The workouts are split out into different sections, where each section represents a fitness level (beginner, intermediate, advanced). This clear separation makes the workouts very easy to follow. There is also a simple yet effective stretch and warm up routine provided that will get your blood flowing and muscles warmed up in advance of the pushups. As a side note, I can't stress enough how important it is that you take the time to warm up and stretch prior to the workout. In addition to helping prevent injury, warming up your muscles will help you achieve the higher reps without hitting muscle fatigue as you advance through the program.

Once you've finished the program, what next? The author has you covered here as well. The maintenance section provides at least 15 push-up variations that you can use to take your workout to the next level. Some of these variations require extra equipment like a yoga ball or a medicine ball, but most can be done without having to purchase any extra equipment.

Cons

Interestingly enough, the simplicity of the workout is the program's greatest strength and also its greatest weakness. Maybe not surprisingly, doing nothing but push-ups over and over again gets a bit boring after a while. There were several days where I was really jonesing for some variety, just to spice things up a bit. I think the program would have been much improved if the sets were structured with different variations of push-ups rather than leaving all the variations for the maintenance section.

Another nit I need to pick is with the level of instruction provided. Very little guidance is given as to how to handle fatigue during a workout. Although I finished all the workouts, I found that I consistently hit a point where I could no longer push myself up during the last few sets of every workout. I typically got up in kneeling position and rested for a few breaths before continuing with the set. Was I cheating? Did I mess with the effectiveness of the set by taking a break in the middle? Is it more important to complete a set or to stop once I'm unable to complete a push up with good form? I have no idea, and the author is silent on these points. I figured it was better to push through and finish the set by taking breaks as needed to maintain good form, although I'm not sure I got everything out of the workout I could have. Since this program covers beginners, more advice needs to be given to accommodate someone who is approaching this program with little or no workout experience.

Another thing I need to note is that the author seems to have taken liberty with the definition of the word "consecutive", as in "7 weeks to 100 consecutive pushups". When I initially got the book, I thought I would be working up to 100 pushups in a single set. However, the most push-ups that are done in one set is 60 reps, and even then you won't hit this number till the last week of the most advanced program, which I did not do. The beginner workout is structured such that you will work towards completing 100 push-ups in a single workout by week 7. This in itself is quite an accomplishment for any beginner, but it isn't the same as 100 consecutive pushups. This is a minor criticism since the workout is still solid despite the misleading title, but I do think it's important for anyone buying the book to know this. I hit 100 push-ups by week 5 of the intermediate program I was following, and hit 200 on the last day of the program.

Results

Well, I'll tell you right off I didn't get ripped from doing hundreds of push-ups over 7 weeks, but I did see improvements. I had my wife measure my arms and chest before I started the workout and at the end of every week, and although it's hard to tell from the pictures, I actually gained a full inch in both my chest and arm measurements after completing the program. However, I believe the chest measurement gain came mostly from my back rather than my chest. I also toned up a bit on my upper body overall, which is somewhat visible from the pictures in the video. Most importantly, I gained the satisfaction of having completed 200 non-consecutive push-ups in the span of 45 minutes, which I think is pretty darn good for an out-of-shape guy in his late 30s. However, I was disappointed that I did not see bigger gains, especially given the sheer number of pushups I did over the course of the seven weeks.

Bottom Line

Although it isn't perfect, "7 Weeks to 100 Push-ups" is a good program for anyone looking for a workout that is simple to do, can be done anywhere, and has a low barrier to entry in terms of intensity, time, and equipment. Granted, you'll need to reset your expectation about what "consecutive" means in terms of achieving 100 (or 200+) pushups, and you'll have to make some assumptions about how to proceed when you get tired, but it doesn't get any simpler than this. I definitely recommend this program for anyone at a beginner or intermediate fitness level. Most people who start a fitness program flame out quickly unless they have a goal to reach. Don't let this be you! This program sets out an ambitious goal that is realistic and achievable, provided you can overlook the fact that you are actually building up to 100 non-consecutive push-ups despite the title of the book. Use this program as a starting point to a healthier and fitter lifestyle.

On the flip side, this workout is much too basic for anyone who is already in shape or who considers themselves to be at an advanced level. I'd say if you can already crank out 50+ pushups in a single set, this workout probably isn't going to be challenging enough for you. If that's the case, I recommend looking elsewhere.

Next up, 7 weeks to 50 pull-ups!

Buy 7 Weeks to 100 Push-Ups: Strengthen and Sculpt Your Arms, Abs, Chest, Back and Glutes by Training to Now

In the end, I suppose this would be a valuable book for someone who has never worked out before, or who has very little upper body muscular endurance combined with little knowledge of push-ups. However, I am a military servicemember who is able to do lots of push-ups, but I've never been able to get to 100 consecutive push-ups in a single set. So I thought I'd give it a whirl, since I've always wanted to be able to do 100 in a row. Unfortunately, this program didn't help me get any closer. At the end of 7 weeks, I could do a couple of reps more than I started at (I believe I went from 67 to 70 in a two-minute timed test) but nowhere near 100. Clearly I started at and finished the toughest routine in the book. Furthermore, the instruction is rather skimpy and simplistic. Their are several routines, based on how many push-ups you start out being able to do, some pictures and description of what a good push-up looks like, and very general tips on rest and recovery. Not much detail or variation, little or no discussion of age or injury and how to work around these factors. There are picture and tips on different kinds of push-ups than the "normal," up-down, push-ups, but no hints on how many to do, when, or how to integrate them into a program. They are just there. This book could have been compressed into, say, an article of 4 or 5 pages. There isn't a whole lot there. For someone who is reasonably fit and can do already do, say, 50 push-ups, this book is unlikely to really push you beyond where you are at. So carefully evaluate where you are at before you purchase this.

I first came to know of the author, Steve Speirs, independent of his book, and the first thing that should be said above all else, is that Steve has dedicated his life to helping others enjoy the fitness and health that he himself enjoys.

I myself and a swimmer/cyclist/runner/triathlete/singer/website creator/podcast host, and in keeping up with these activities on top of living as normal a life as possible, I am quite often hard pressed for the time I need to do smaller, stabilizing workouts. I should also say that, having somewhat of a background in lifting, and thus having quite a bit of muscle mass, in order to make myself a better endurance athlete, I needed to abandon weight training and become more lean while still maintaining the strength necessary for the myriad event in which I participate.

When I first began using "7 Weeks.." I forgot for a while that I was supposed to put down the book and put into practice the techniques within. The book is such an easy and informative read, I felt like I was gleaning just as much knowledge simply from reading about the advantages and different methods of "push-up-ology" (my word, I don't want to put such language on the author!) that I was getting a workout sitting and reading! Of course, that not being the case, I had to try the program for myself.

I began in one of the "advanced" programs set forth by the book, which was based on how many push-ups I could do prior to beginning the program (I believe I did 50 before crapping out). Without going into the minutiae of my personal journey (after all you need to read the book to see for yourself), let me say that the hardest part of obtaining the goal of reaching 100 push-ups in 7 weeks was stopping at the numbers given by the book! It was so incredibly simple to understand and follow that I truly believe that even some who claims to have no upper body strength would be able to complete the programs (from beginner to advanced) with no problem at all.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention one of my favorite parts of the book; the little snippets of push-up trivia, scattered throughout the pages. They give you a sense of not only how long push-ups have been around, but how they have had a positive impact for so long.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I think that any person, young or old, male or female would have a great time reading and using the programs in "7 Weeks to 100 Push-ups" and would have a healthier, happier and better toned life for it.

Well I hope I'm just mistaken somehow but I find the kindle version of this book essentially immpossible to read. The text is fine but the workouts in the book appear as tables and when trying to read them they are unbelievably small. I tried to increase the font size but that has no effect on the tables. So if I'm wrong I'll change my review, but if not I'm rethinking kindle for books with any form of tabular information.

Alternative Cures: The Most Effective Natural Home Remedies for 160 Health Problems

Alternative Cures: The Most Effective Natural Home Remedies for 160 Health ProblemsI have had irritable bowel syndrome for years. It seems to have no cure with conventional medicine, so I bought Alternative Cures. The book recommended peppermint tea, which I found in the health food section of my local grocery store. I bought some and tried it, and my problems are greatly relieved! Sure was worth the cost of the book!

This is one of two books I bought and used, the other being Balch and Stengler, "Prescription for Natural Cures." The main difference between them is that the latter book is much larger and perhaps more comprehensive, and the other book also includes Acupressure, Bodywork, Stress Reduction, and Bach Flower remedies across all its areas.

While the other books is more recent (2004 versus 2000), and larger, and more detailed, on balance I recommend that both books be purchased. Each has insights and differing layouts that taken together lead to a better feel for a problem (e.g. menopause, hair loss) and to a personalized approach to using natural cures.

Both are excellent books, I am quite happy to have this one.

I bought this book strictly based on the high feedback rating it received here at Amazon. I am so glad to say that I am absolutely not disappointed.

The book is full of practical "cures" for almost every ailment your family will have. The advice is so practical that many of the needed items are in my kitchen. I particularly love the advice in the Headache chapter. The peppermint oil has helped my headaches already!

Every ailment and the advice given for it, is backed by the opinions of medical doctors. Even if you don't usually care what a real MD has to say, it is nice to know that the advice given in the book has been reviewed thoroughly.

The Beauty Experiment: How I Skipped Lipstick, Ditched Fashion, Faced the World without Concealer, a

The Beauty Experiment: How I Skipped Lipstick, Ditched Fashion, Faced the World without Concealer, and Learned to Love the Real MeThis is a hilarious and courageous book about one individuals authentic battle to find her self worth in the midst of all the inner and outer messages, subtle to blatant, sacred to profane, that assure us of our failure to be good enough, worthy enough, attractive enough, etc. That fear of rejection lies so deep in our hearts and minds that we seem endlessly vulnerable to any variety of fear monger from playground bully to the political scold, to advertising promisers of making us better if we just buy that thing. This author has the toughness and determination to take a hard look at where all the manipulation is coming from as she also discovers her own goodness, strength and yes, beauty that always has been hers. I love that she took a stand, held her ground and through that stubbornness and fight learned so much about where those scary voices come from. The challenge to become authentic is universal and timeless for men and women, whether it's over the matter of make-up, or about carrying weapons, what to do with ones life, or how to serve the country, none of us escapes this gauntlet of life. Thank you Ms. Baker for giving us such a crisp, funny and honest look at how you managed. Bravo!

We've all struggled with image maintenance, but hardly anyone will admit it. This brave book is better than any dozen "How Not to Look (Old, Fat, Otherwise Bad) Books."

If you ever checked yourself out in a store window's reflection or tried on 15 coats only to leave the store empty-handed, you've finally found a sympathetic soul and a great read. Now in the AARP zone, I can tell you that the issues really don't go away ... because now you get to worry about being fat AND old AND invisible.

Unless, like Phoebe, you just pull the plug on the ridiculous beauty treadmill and start living instead. Reasonable maintenance and hygiene, of course, but then ... you look how you look? What a revolution!

She also shines in this book with her take on being an expat trailing spouse. Her experience is exactly how it really is to be the wife/appendage in an alien place. Again, no one is supposed to admit that what appears to be an "adventure" is actually often a bleak, lonely, depersonalizing domestic struggle, but it is, even if you don't have new-baby stress, as Phoebe also does.

I could hardly resist reading this book straight through, because I wanted it to last.

This book really isn't just about the no-makeup, no-fashion experiment; it's about the struggles of an exhausted young wife/mother living in Hong Kong with a husband who's frequently away. She writes really well and I enjoyed the book a lot, but it seemed to me that she got off-topic. I sort of got the impression that she originally wrote it as a general memoir, but maybe the publishers decided that the beauty/fashion boycott idea was a good marketing hook. SPOILER ALERT: In the end, she goes back to using makeup and shopping again, and I didn't get the sense that the big "experiment" had really changed anything for her.

Had the author not jumped back and forth between time zones, but detailed her beauty experiment more chronologically, this book may have sustained my interest a little better, because the basic premise--forcing oneself to eliminate make-up for a year--is interesting.

It's one thing to sit down after New Year's begrudgingly with a book that looks like it might be a list of to-do's or a "guide to a better you". But surprisingly, The Beauty Experiment is not that. It's a beautifully woven tale about a woman confronting her demons, and they just happen to be the same ones that many of the rest of us also have lurking in our closets. What makes this book so powerful is that while it is a thoughtful expose of ideas that are hard to buck, and perceptions in society that are powerful windmills (even if they are just windmills), it is also a fascinating story. Almost immediately I found myself thinking about how I see myself (beautiful? plain? old? flawed?) alongside a sense of wonder at the vivid descriptions of streets and life in Hong Kong. Perhaps what this book does best, through its exquisite writing, is allow the reader to confront big ideas while sinking into the kinds of characters and places that make reading so worthwhile.

Stress Can Really Get on Your Nerves! (Laugh & Learn)

Stress Can Really Get on Your Nerves! This book is not only a great resource for kids who are feeling stressed, but also a humorous gentle reminder for adults in the same boat! The author identifies sources of stress and reaction to stress, tells how your body reacts to stress (i.e., heart speeds up, sweating, etc.), discusses the fight or flight reaction, discusses good ways (i.e., deep breathing, listening to relaxing music, gradual muscle relaxation, making a gratitude list, visualization, making a worry jar, doing chores, exercising, prioritizing, talking to a confident, etc.) and not-so-good ways to deal with stress (taking it out on others, running away from home, avoiding school doing drugs or drinking, etc.), and gives some examples of anonymous children who have been stressed and the inappropriate methods they used to deal with the situation. It gives a list of things to do to help avoid becoming stressed in the first place (eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, etc.). The illustrations are large and appealing and the text is easy-going and even humorous while still giving serious, sound advice on how to relax. For instance, the part of the book that lists effective ways to deal with stress (giving examples of "stress messes" and aids) is called "How to Be a Panic Mechanic." I read this book to my somewhat shy, anxious 9-yr.-old daughter tonight and right away she opened up about the things that were stressing her out lately. I recommend it highly.

This book uses humor, lively graphics and straightforward language to teach kids about stress and how to deal with it. It offers concrete ways to identify and then lessen stress in their lives. I highly recommend it for any young adult.

This book has seemed to work for my son, a perfectionist. I also read Freeing Your Child from Anxiety and when combined with the child reading this book, it puts both the parent and child on the same wavelength. This book allowed my son to understand some of the things I was trying with him and also made him feel more in control of his feelings and how to deal with them.

7 Minute Rotator Cuff Solution

7 Minute Rotator Cuff SolutionThis book was written by a chiropractor over 22 years ago. ALL copies of this book being re-sold are 1st editions, and thus contain info from the late 80's. If any new info is added, then its called a 2nd edition, which there aren't any (there are no 2005 editions). Thus, this is not a good choice if one is looking for the latest rotator cuff program because medical information is constantly changing all the time as new studies are done. Case in point, this book does not include the sidelying abduction exercise which has been recently found to be one of the safest and most effective exercises for the supraspinatus muscle, the most frequently torn cuff muscle. The sidelying abd. exercise does not grind your cuff tendons down further and cause more damage like some of the older exercises once taught like the "empty-can" exercise. Also. we now know that you really only need a few targeted exercises to rehabilitate the rotator cuff, and in fact doing too many can actually hurt you in the long run and cause you more trouble down the road.

Now the book does cover some basic anatomy and function of the rotator cuff, so that's good. Also, be aware that as you progress through the many levels in the various routines, the number of exercises greatly increases (level 9 has a whopping 8 exercises for your cuff), so you're certainly going to be spending a lot more than a mere "7 minutes" doing exercises (obviously a marketing gimmick).

Additionally, these exercises involve either dumbells or a pulley system, so you've got to have access to that equipment and some of the exercises even require you to have someone help you. Readers might also want to check out Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff too the exercises are much more in line with the current research, take much less time to do, and help many other types of shoulder problems you might have as well.

I had a nagging shoulder problem that got so bad I could barely lift my arms past horizontal. I've been working out for years, but one very, very rough weekend sports outing trashed both shoulders to where I couldn't work out at all. This book with it's simple exercises totally cured my problem. Now I just incorporate them into the end of my shoulder workout and VOILA !!! Pain and injury free for 4 years now and my workouts are better than ever. The technical explanation is superb. The best money I ever spent. Better than any help I ever got from physical trainers and doctors for the same problem.

This book has literally saved me thousands from un-necessary shoulder arthroscopic surgery. I read the book, did the rehab exercises, and more importantly QUIT doing the exercises that were CAUSING MY SHOULDER problems! This book was a lifesaver and a great deal for the price...Easy to read, well written and fully illustrated. Has plenty of tables and descriptions of the routines for Rehab, Strengthening and Building up the shoulder girdle. I used the exercises to build up my rear delts and have been pain free for years this is after I couldn't even SLEEP, due to the pain in my R/C!! I even shared it with (2) other friends who had the same types of shoulder impingement pain, and they reported the same 'miracle' results (although I had to force my last friend to give me the book back, as he liked it so much...). Highly recommend this to anyone who suffers from shoulder pain, before they do any invasive techniques-it may save you like it did me!

Some of this is a bit bogged down in details, but generally offered some good exercise routines for rehab of rotator cuff. The trick is to keep up with the exercises and pay attention to the correct technique if you want to see improvement.
