Cappadocia

CappadociaFor anyone planning to visit the Cappadocia region of Turkey, this book is a must read. It is informative, enlightning, humorous, and so much more than any other travel book on the subject. The authors, Suzanne and Michael, have spent over twenty years touring the area and getting to know its history, food, culture, terrain, and wonderful people. Their book includes useful maps and photos, many handy travel tips, important basic vocabulary, and detailed descriptions/directions for great walks if you're a hiker. The couple spends a good portion of the year residing in the artisan town of Avanos. Email them that you are coming and perhaps you can meet over a cup of Turkish cay (pronounced like 'chai').

'Cappadocia' is much more than a travel guide. It is written with humor, intimate knowledge, and with obvious love for Cappadocia, Turkey.

My husband and I just got back from an amazing trip to Turkey, and had only 3 days to spend in Cappadocia. If we had it to do over again, we would have spent more time in this jaw-dropping place. We very quickly saw that the two guidebooks we had with us from the US didn't do justice to this region. So we bought Oberheu and Wadenpohl's book in Avanos, Cappadocia, to help us maximize our time there. The book really enhanced our too-brief visit.

We wanted to hike in the valleys, but didn't want to hire a guide for the challenging Rose Valley. Using the book as our guide, we had one of our most memorable and amazing hikes ever. 'Cappodocia' uses maps along with visual cues to guide you along the twisting, mesmerizing valley. The history of the area is presented in a dramatic narrative and really allows you to understand that you are walking among hidden caves, churches, and on sacred ground. Discovering a cave, and seeing the paintings on the ceilings, was absolutely thrilling.

The authors have a real feel for the local people, and urge you to meet the artisans of the area. We did not intend to buy a carpet (so intimidating!), but with the help of a very detailed and interesting chapter on the subject, we visited one of the shops they recommend. The experience in Ali's shop (and our beautiful carpet!) is one of the highlights of our trip.

The book has a European accent, which only makes it more endearing. In the US, before the trip, we shied away from the book because of the price. It was absolutely worth the money. Our only regret is not buying it before our trip, so we would have known to spend more time in this magical region of Turkey.

Nursing Homes: Getting Good Care There (Working Caregiver)

Nursing Homes: Getting Good Care ThereMy husband bought this book for a relative. The relative says the book really helped her understand her rights and how to interact more effectively with the nursing home staff.

Long-term care is most always a crisis when it happens and decisions have to be made in such a short period of time. With the advent of the internet and community resources to draw upon, most people mange the best they can. I was introduced to this book some 5 years ago when volunteering as a Certified Long-term care Ombudsman. It's now in it's Second Edition. A must read for anyone admitting and overseeing the care of a loved one.

I am a registered nurse with past long-term care experience (I was a nursing assistant before becoming an RN) and family member of a nursing home resident. I believe this book hits the mark as a helpful guide to consumers of nursing home care and their families. It helps readers to understand the rights of nursing home residents, and what steps to take to be sure those are honored. It is clearly written and provides lots of practical guidance. In short, I think anyone who anticipates the need for services of a long-term care facility, or whose family member is already a nursing home resident, should get this book. Nursing home residents need advocates, and family members who are well informed can better act on their loved ones' behalf. Some wonderful initiatives are underway to make nursing homes better places to live; this book also explains how to join in this effort.

The book does offer some useful information for anyone who has not had much experience with nursing homes. The role of the Ombudsman which I believe is voluntary, or was, is a very important task for the patients, family and of course the state watchdogs. I am curious about the actual length of time spent in a nursing home and is it a working relationship or one of pure observation. Ever have a bad day at work and the boss you never see comes in??? They write about staff and the nursing homes responsibility but I never read anything about family responsibility. We live in a society that has no time to care for our elderly family members, we are to busy working, going on vacations, where's the sacrifice, You know the kind our parents gave to us. Taking care of an elderly parent is a lot of work and sometimes they have to go to a nursing home because of extensive medical conditions and safety reasons. If you really want to be an advocate for your family members talk to the penny pinching lawmakers who spend very little money on wages improvements, training, just to name a few. The typical American has no idea the poor reimbursement given to homes for the care of the elderly, and unless family is flipping the bill or insurance helps the care of our family members comes from the taxpayers. Contrary to what many believe children are not responsible to pay for their care. The authors talk about tips and tricks to get better care from the staff. Ha, You'll get better care when staff are paid a descent wage for a job no one wants to do not even family members. Want to see what really goes on take a cna course and work in a home for a month. You can't pass judgment on others unless your willing to get your hands dirty. Stop blaming all the problems in homes on the staff. Put it where it belongs, with you, greedy owners, uncaring lawmakers, all forms of media which play the sympathy card to often. Rather than bite the hand that cares for the elderly, chop the arm that cuts their budgets every year, look in the mirror who is truly responsible to care for your parents? You or me?

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies

Weight Loss Surgery For DummiesI guess probably the best way I can be helpful in this review is to help you decide if this book is for you. First of all, the authors have written the book specifically for people for whom the following is true:

-You or someone you love has severe obesity.

-You want to learn more about weight loss surgery.

-You've already tried and failed at many different weight loss methods.

-You've already had the surgery and you want to keep your weight down.

-Being obese has become your identity.

-You're ready to step up and change your life.

-You're ready to lose weight permanently.

The organization of the book is sensible and orderly. The five sections include:

Is Weight Loss Surgery For You?

Preparing for Surgery

The Hospital and Beyond

Ensuring Success

Myths and Misconceptions

Typical for the Dummies series, the language is clear and simple. It never gets very technical, so information-hounds may need to dig deeper than this book goes. Clearly, these are the basics, and very well laid out. For an ideal introduction to the subject, I can't see how you could beat this book.

Spent weeks looking at info on the web, but this book really did have a lot more insight that I found. If you are considering WLS or if you have just had it, this is a great book to let you know what to expect...both the good and the bad.

I am going through the process for weight loss surgery right now and want to learn as much as I can before I go through it. It will take much commitment from me to make this successful. I found out that I am the only one that will make this work for me or not. I have also found out that a quarter of the people that go through this surgery regain all and sometimes more of the weight because they are not committed to following the program.

You will need a very strong support group if you are like me and start something and sometimes don't finish it. I than God for my family and friends who want to see this work but I will still join the support group at the hospital as well.

This is a wonderful book, it gives you all of the options and pitfalls of bariatric surgery. It taught me what to expect and what to do.

This is NOT a diet, it is a change in life and thinking. I know all diets say that but this will change your life or scar you for life. Start everything before the surgery.

Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls

Beauty Pearls for Chemo GirlsMany of our bodies just can't stand up to the environmental toxins, chemical additives, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and genetic modifications in the food and water supply these days. So lots and lots of us are getting cancer, which is good for Big Pharma profits but very bad for us! As the American Health Care landscape changes, alternative solutions, including Insulin Potentiation Therapy, which utilizes 1/10 the amount of chemo medicine much more effectively, will hopefully be encouraged and covered by insurance, but for now, we are stuck with the status quo solutions that mainstream Doctors endorse and our insurance will cover, which usually means chemotherapy in large doses. Hopefully we will look back, 10 years from now, and realize how barbaric chemotherapy really is, at least the way it is administered today, but it's what we've got to deal with, and our positive attitude toward our own healing protocol is key.

"Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls" is a precious gift of the heart to women everywhere. Authors Marybeth Maida and Debbie Kiederer have rallied together a powerful group consciousness for us to plug into, with a network of support from celebrities, beauty, fashion, health, psychological and spiritual experts as well as other women facing this extreme challenge, and those who have emerged triumphant and whole from the ordeal. Imparting pearls of wisdom is what this book is all about, and it addresses this journey of healing in such a comprehensive way, that pretty much every aspect of what we could possibly face is covered with excellent recommendations.

I recently gave a speech on alternative cancer cures at a University and when I asked these young people how many of them knew someone who had been affected by cancer, every hand went up. If we have not personally been affected, we know someone who has and we can be of great help to them by gifting them this book, imparting our own pearls of wisdom as gleaned from this book, or at least applying this knowledge to know how to be of the greatest assistance to them.

Betsey Johnson is my favorite Designer and her first hand experience with cancer allowed her to write the perfect forward to the book; "It's so obvious to me that the way a woman looks while she's going through chemo is going to affect the way she feels...commit to giving yourself all the comfort and kindness you can manage." I'm wearing a Betsey Johnson dress at this very moment and have dozens more in my closet, so her name alone would have drawn me to this book, but then what a wealth of treasure I discovered there!

From Betsey, we launch into a journey, with our first consideration being the "Mane Event", where we learn about hair loss, hair restoration, the choosing of wigs and other ways of covering our heads if we so choose to. Personally, the monk`s cleanly shaved head has always appealed to me with bright colored hats when it is cold, but everyone is different. We then visit the world of skin care and makeup, then on to fashion. We learn expert techniques of taking care of our bodies, covering every possible physical issue in light of chemo`s side effects. We learn how to effectively assemble our health care team and set up our daily routine for optimal health, which includes our diet, massage and other therapies and solutions for issues of hormonal balance, which is so important because so many women are plunged into menopause abruptly during this process.

My favorite chapter is entitled, The Integrative Approach, which addresses alternative and integrative medicine questions. I found this chapter to be conservatively aligned in conjunction with standard medicine, but this is the reality of the route most will choose. Having enough guts and money to follow a purely alternative path is a huge challenge in itself, that few are well equipped enough to follow through with and survive. In the final chapter, we are encouraged to embrace our own spirituality at this very spiritual time where many important resolutions and transformations occur. This may also necessitate the contemplation of our own final transition (at least this time around). Some spiritual seers have pointed out that we are all in the process of dieing, either now or later and that using death as an Advisor is a spiritually healthy practice for anyone. Those of us who are said goodbye to are also well served by these particular pearls of wisdom.

I especially appreciated being able to understand how to help a person facing this challenge. Since I read this book, a dear friend of mine, who lives close by, found herself in the position of needing this kind of support, and I was able to sincerely offer it in a very constructive way; "Assign me a job, and I really mean it!" All our mutual friends did the same thing and her burdens from everyday responsibilities have been lightened, she is well accompanied to her treatments and attended afterwards, her house is clean, groceries in the fridge and healthy food is prepared for her when she needs it most, allowing her to focus more on getting well. It has been fun and rewarding for us too and it was this book that helped us understand how best to do that. Thanks Debbie and my dearest Marybeth!

ohmygosh, this book is AMAZING! Having gone through cancer myself, I picked this book up and could not believe all the authors have covered: hair, skin, fashion, dealing with doctors, taking care of yourself, your family, your mind, your soul; even the embarrassing girl things like infections and not feeling desirable are all dealt with very sensitively and without any sort of cuteness. They lay out what might happen and then tell you how to deal with it and I for one am very grateful to have this to give to my friend now that she's facing the cancer battle. What a great resource! If you're sick, buy it and if you know someone who is, get it for her -BEAUTY PEARLS IS DA BOMB!!!

This book is a perfect example of one woman taking her own cancer experience and turning it into something incredibly positive for those who have or will soon walk in those same "cancer" shoes. I would imagine that everyone can close their eyes and think of at least one person going through cancer treatment or one person whose life has been touched by someone fighting the good fight. What a perfect gift to give them! This book is encouraging, inspirational and fool of great information for women who embark on this journey. It lets "Chemo Girls' know: "You are not alone!" I recommend this book for anyone and everyone who has been touched by cancer. Thank you to the authors for pouring their heart and soul into the pages!

When my sister first was diagnosed with cancer, I bought her a book beacuse I felt so helpless, but the book didn't address any of her real concerns. How I wish this book was in print at that time!

Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls is a very practical and helpful guide to almost anything a woman has a difficult time with during chemo: how to pick out the best wig, how to tastefully hide the fact that your eyebrows and eyelashes are gone, foods that might sit better in your stomach during chemo...THIS book has it all. There's even a section that deals with spirituality. I LOVE that the author discusses her own experiences, but the book's focus isn't on herself. The focus is on all of the FANTASTIC, famous contributors in every field and their expert advice: Oribe, Oscar Blandi, etc..., all providing very useful and practical information. I LOVED this book and believe it will truly assist many women out there going through one of the worst times in their lives! Kudos to the authors for doing such a splendid job!

Exercises for Multiple Sclerosis: A Safe and Effective Program to Fight Fatigue, Build Strength, and

Exercises for Multiple Sclerosis: A Safe and Effective Program to Fight Fatigue, Build Strength, and Improve BalanceI have been battling Multiple Sclerosis for years and I have read almost every book I have run into on the subject. This book is by far the best, for people who are unwilling to surrender to this disease. Brad Hamler clearly understands that it is possible to delay the immobility and other physical problems that MS can cause, by maintaining a focused exercise routine. I had come to the same conclusion myself and I was delighted to read the experiences of a medical service professional, with extensive experience with MS patients, confirming my strategy in battling this disease. I highly recommend this book to anyone with MS. A well focused excercise routine has been the most clearly effective therapy, of all the therapies I have tried. If you have MS, this book will show you how to fight back, and keep active and mobile. Eventually, medical science will develop therapies not requiring this much effort, but until then Brad has the best strategy to battle MS. Continue with whatever drug therapy you may be on, but add Brad's exercise routine to it.

This is a terrific, positive presentation, especially for younger patients with MS. As I have had MS for over forty years I found some of the exercises more difficult than they would have been when I was in my thirties or forties. However I liked the positive reinforcing attitude of the author and found many of the exercises helpful.

I've been struggling with MS for years and have tried pt that was kind of standard, aquatic pt -and just plain riding an exercise bike. This book is full of information I haven't received from any of my docs or pts -VERY helpful, encouraging and the excercise program is manageable and seems to be helping! Thanks, Brad Hamler.

Managing fatigue, balance, spasticity and other symptoms make exercising a true challenge for those of us with MS. The descriptions and the pictures ensure that you're doing the exercises correctly. Most can be done at home and/or at the gym. In Part 111, there is a discussion on the benefits of working out and pacing yourself on "bad days" that I found very useful. Definitely worth it.
