Aging Backwards: Secrets to Staying Young

Aging Backwards: Secrets to Staying YoungI was disappointed in this book. The material really isn't anything new.

The book's lay-out is poorly designed...huge quotes from professionals in the center of pages. I assume this is to make-up for lack of content. The author's personal stories and experiences are funny, but I wasn't expecting a mini-auto biography. If you absolutely know nothing about making healthy choices (don't smoke, avoid over-exposure to sun) and need the very basic tricks to look and remain feeling a bit younger, then this is the book for you. If you need something more substantial I think Christopher Hopkin's book, Staging Your Come Back, is far more "to the point" and better written. As for anti-aging health tips, you can easily find the ones listed in Aging Backwards on-line for free. Seriously, there are more informative books available.

I purchased this book because the topic interests me a lot and the reviews for it were so great. I was expecting to learn something but instead found a most pathetic book. In it it had so much information on the most boring topics. Things like road crash statistics, crossword puzzles and how she used to be obese and was on a 8 month icecream diet. I hated this book and found the info in it useless.

Very disappointed in this book. Like the other reviewers said, it is so light on content that big pull-quotes from so-called experts are used on every page to take up space. Much of this content appears like cut-and-paste material from other sources. The arrangement of the content seems very disjointed. Hard to follow. Not logical. Not an easy read.

Save your money or buy "How Not To Look Old." I really pity the women who paid $20 for this slim paperback on her Aging Backwards website.

SAS Active Library Emergency Medic

SAS Active Library Emergency MedicThis book is a great quick reference. The book was written with a clear purpose ... to save life. I am tired of seeing first aid manuals that spend most of the time being unreasonably verbose to avoid lawsuits. Emergency Medic is a breath of fresh air. I am an engineer, I am not in medicine, but this book makes a lot of sense to me.

The Educated Child: A Parents Guide From Preschool Through Eighth Grade

The Educated Child: A Parents Guide From Preschool Through Eighth GradeAs a mother of three -one in public school, one in private and one home-schooled -I am deeply concerned about my children's education. I've lost count of the number of books I've read in the past 16 years on educating children. Some books were worth my time, many were not. Mr. Bennett's book is standing tall at the top of my list of "best reads". I'm sure we all have horror stories coming out of our kids' education (i.e., the huge amount of wasted time in the classroom, the lack of control in the class, the political correctness of revisionist history), but this book really can help. Mr. Bennett begins by explaining the importance of a solid education that engages a child's imagination by first making sure that child can read well. He builds on that by reminding parents that the main responsibility for educating our kids rests on our shoulders, not the school's. The book goes into detail about more than the Three R's, but covers those subjects extremely well, also. He reminds us that as parents it's up to us to speak up and go to bat for our kids throughout their education thus insuring they get the help they need. Throughout the book are checklists, questions to ask your child's teachers, book lists for you to insure that your child reads what is truly worthy of his time, and tips for incorporating the arts into your child's life. This book is like having a one-on-one conversation with a great educator who will give you the confidence you need to take control of your child's education. Help your child succeed by reading this book and then putting it into practice!

Bennett, Finn & Cribb provide for all parents what parents of special needs children have had for a long time an individualized education plan, a guide for what their children need to learn and a yardstick to measure the school's performance. Since my children are in 3rd and 5th grade, I immediately went to those sections to see how we were doing in our tiny four school district, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that we do well here, but could do better. I found their treatment of issues such as learning disabilty, ADHD and giftedness to be even handed and practical. By using this text as a guide parents (and hopefully school boards and principals) will be less inclined to jump on the latest educational bandwagon, and will instead stay focused on what needs to be done. The chapter on "Temptation and Troubles", dealing with the influences of TV, internet and sexual education is excellent, and the advice here will certainly be distributed in my practice as a child Psychologist. This is a must buy book for any parent who cares about what their children learn during these critical years.

This is such a fabulous book. I have four children (ages 3-9) and I have found more valuable information, guidance, and great ideas in this book than in all the other education related books I have read -combined. I particularly liked the grade specific study topics (core curriculum), reading lists, helpful tips to improve reading and other ways to help your child succeed in school, questions to ask the teacher, info. on gifted and special needs children, and kindergarten readiness list. Even though I consider myself somewhat experienced in the first three to four years of school (due to the volume of children I have), I found that this book provided me with new insight and reinforced my desire to help my children develop a love for learning. I know I will use this as a reference for many years to come. My only regret is that I did not have this book when my oldest child started preschool! Well worth the price!

This book looks like a college textbook, but is so filled with practical, down to earth common sense that I simply couldn't put it down. I am a teacher and a parent, and am highly recommending it to every person I come in contact with. It outlines what each grade level's expectations should be, and how to spot good education, spotty education and poor education. This man is a breath of fresh air to the education world. I wish I could take all of this information and place it in each parent's head.

One thing I particularly admire about Dr. Bennett's writing is that it is easy to read and reference. He speaks plainly and simply while making huge statements (ex. "There is right and wrong and it is our job to teach children to choose right"--what a concept lacking in our schools!)

Another thing I admire about this book is that it is not politically motivated. He does have some opinions in the last chapter of this book, but over all, he points out that we are to raise and teach moral, virtuous children that sometimes "make their brain sweat" while working out problems. (My daughter really likes to tell me her brain is sweating, so she must be doing a great job).

Another thing I admire about this book is that it is his feeling that if children were taught pride in themselves as Americans, we would see children turning away from drugs, because to support drug dealers is to support enemies of the United States.

If you have a child in your family or are a teacher or student teacher, I cannot rate this book high enough. If it were out in paperback I would personally purchase it for each of my parents in my class.

This is a wonderful book, a must read for parents with children of any school age. Better yet, buy it before they start school so you'll know what to look for. It's probably the most useful book you can buy as a parent. Your children will benefit from what you learn as well. Don't send your children to school until you read this book!

Home Bodybuilding: Three Easy Steps for Building Your Body and Changing Your Life

Home Bodybuilding: Three Easy Steps for Building Your Body and Changing Your LifeI've read the reviews on this site about Home Bodybuilding and have a few observations people may find helpful.

First of all...

1) If a book is rated five stars, look to see if it's rated with just one five star rating or many. Chances are, if there's more than one glowing review, many other people have found the book equally as helpful.

2) When there are negative reviews, check and see how many there are and if there are commonalites between each of them.

I bought this book many months ago along with the Men's Fitness Home Workout book and have found each to have their strengths and weaknesses.

While the Men's Fitness book has more photos and exercises, it lacks much of the periphery elements of the mental components of motivation and just how hard it is for many of us to get started and stay motivated working out--especially at home AND by yourself...HELLO!

I like both both books very much. There must be a reason why amazon.com pairs Home Bodybuilding with the Men's Fitness book. They compliment each other quite well.

Finally, I'd like to give a few observations on what the reviewer "Judge Knott" wrote regarding the Home Bodybuilding book and how this reviewer must not have read the same book I'm looking at right now as I write this review. Specifically:

"There are many exercises shown that can only be done if one has access to expensive, complicated gym machines. (Yo! Isn't this supposed to be for h-o-m-e workouts?)"

If this reviewer would've read the book and understood its purpose, the author Robert Wolff states in clear language that he wants to give readers exercises they can do with freeweights (barbells and dumbbells), without weights (bodyweight only), with machines (if they have those in their home), and even informercial equipment.

"There is a sloppiness and an imprecision in the way many of the exercises are described."

I've got a library full of nutrition, exercise and physiology books and the exercise descriptions and illustrations Wolff uses in Home Bodybuilding match how the others illustrate how the exercises Wolff Describes should be done.

"The whole book is written at a reading level equivalent to that found in "The National Enquirer" or "The New York Post."

I'm reminded of a quote that a 20-plus million copy bestselling author once said, "Don't worry; If you write for the seventh grader, the Ph.D. will understand it too."

"It's also filled with cheerful, peppy, Oprah-like self-help sayings and anecdotes that recall Dale Carnegie in an extremely good mood. They bored and annoyed me."

Look at the other reviews who seem to greatly enjoy this author's writing style. Then click on reviewer Judge Knott's other reviews. For such a scathing review of this book, it was surprising how many of this person's reviews fall into the scope of fine arts and NOT nutrition, fitness or health. Perhaps returning Home Bodybuilding and getting a book on the order of the "New York Metropolitan Ballet of Workouts" might be a better fit?

My purpose is not to deride of belittle the above reviewer. All of us are entitled to our own opinions. However, when coming to this review forum, my only request is that any of us have a fully formed and educated opinion that doesn't selectively omit the good or not so desirable points of any book. That way, we can all learn and be helped by what anyone says--good or bad.

For my money, Home Bodybuilding was money well spent. Thanks for letting me have my two cents worth. Best to all!

Martial Arts For Dummies

Martial Arts For DummiesMartial Arts for Dummies is a delightful and educational book that dispels many of the myths the uninitiated may have heard about the martial arts. The book includes examples of common situations you may run into when first entering the training hall. For example, how to choose a school or art that is right for you, what to look for in a good martial arts instructor, and the meaning of the belt, uniform, and rituals.

The easy, conversational tone of the text makes it difficult to put this book down. After fifteen years of everyday training in the martial arts, I read this book cover to cover and found myself thinking "yes, that's how it is." The chapters on "The Part of Tens" toward the end of the book provide an excellent quick reference whenever you need that energy boost for tonight's class. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to both beginners and advanced students of the martial arts.

Better than I expected. This book is a cogent and pithy overview of martial arts, what they, what they are not, how to get involved with them, and how to succeed if you choose to do so. It covers the basics of a good cross-section of styles including karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, judo, akido, escrima, hapkido, hapkido, muay thai, jeet kune do, and tai chi, all the major players. The author briefly discusses the martial culture, uniforms, and ranking systems so that you know what to expect. Further, she helps you understand how to pick a style and instructor, make the most of your training, know when/where you should use your martial knowledge, and how to avoid injuries during the process. It is comprehensive, well-written, and generally entertaining.

I bought this book to learn about as many martial arts as I could to decide which was best suited for me. This book is extremely informative and showed me to make sure I am choosing an art I enjoy. Being 33 and completely new to martial arts, there was a lot I didn't know and this book guided me through it (visiting classes, talking to instructors and other students, etc.) and helped me know what I was getting in to. I have since chosen my art (Wing Chun) and can honestly say I'm loving the class! Had it not been for this book, I think I would still be talking about taking a martial arts class instead of being enrolled in one. You get a broad overview of so many different arts, their origins, what to look for in an art/a school/classmates/the instructor. Ultimately you must decide which art is for you, but man did this book help! Buy it!

This book is great if you're looking to start training in martial arts. It gives very useful tips for determining the right school and right instructor. It gives summaries of several different martial arts styles and even explains what skills, such as flexibility and endurance, are needed for a few of the styles covered.

I have been involved in numerous (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kobudo, Kendo, Kenjutsu, Tantojitsu etc) martial arts in my more than 60 years of study, both as a student and instructor. I have bought and read just about every book I could on the martial arts in order to increase the sum total of my knowledge. I found this one to be a very good basic guide for anyone who has little or no experience in the martial arts, but who is thinking of taking up a particular system or style. Do not be turned off by the title (Martial Arts for Dummies), there is a lot of good solid material in this text that would benefit anyone interested in the martial arts. Even those who are experienced in the martial arts will find this book interesting and informative.

This volume is organized into five parts or sections. The first part provides an overview of martial art essentials. The second part explains what is required to "walk the walk and talk the talk" when it comes to the martial arts. The third part of this book is my personal favorite because it summarizes numerous martial art styles such as karate, kung-fu, judo, hapkido, and many of systems. The fourth section covers the ten rules in martial art classes and the ten qualities of a good martial arts teacher. The final section has the glossary and sources and resources.

In conclusion, this book is for anyone who desires to have a basic overview of the various martial art systems and styles.

The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back, and Everything

The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back, and Everything Else You Need to Know About a Cesarean BirthI had a planned c-section and found this book to be very helpful, especially the exercize plan for recovery. The book provides a nice description of the proceedure, but it is the chapters on emotional impacts of c-section and information for your partner really set it apart. It is nice that the book covers both planned and unplanned c-sections. It is nice that the authors provide warnings before content that may be upsetting so that you can decide whether or not to read that section. I have recommended the book to several friends and they all said that the book helped them with their recoveries as well.

I tend to be a person who is not satisfied with just one source of information and do extensive research on every subject that I am educating myself on. After looking at many different books and resources, I can honestly say that this is the only book that you need to prepare you for your c-section. This comprehensive reference provides thorough information while maintaining a humanistic approach to the subject matter. This book contains a whole chapter on the emotional aspects of having a cesarean which I found to be very helpful, since it is something that is not usually addressed. On top of the information included to aid you in your physical recovery there is another chapter with workout information when you are ready for that. I would have paid twice the price I did for this truly "essential" resource

Three years ago, I underwent an emergency c-section and have had emotional issues surrounding it since. Now that I've learned with this second pregnancy that I am not a candidate for an attempted vaginal birth, I decided it was high time to educate myself as much as possible.

After reading this book, not only am I feeling more prepared for the upcoming c-section but I'm also more understanding of the one I had years ago. I heartily recommend this for every woman, whether she's pregnant and planning on a vaginal birth or a mom that has had a c-section in the past.

I bought the book solely for the workout chapter. I had had one c-section already and never was able to find a workout routine that didn't end up causing me pain at the incision site. This workout is gentle enough to start with, but effective in getting back your abdominal muscles. I've been doing it for 5 weeks now and my stomach is significantly flatter. I've also lost 8 pounds. I can't say much about the rest of the book because, since it was my second c-section, I didn't need to read it.
